Camels are the most valuable livestock species in the Horn of Africa and play a pivotal role in the nutritional sustainability for millions of people. Their health status is therefore of utmost importance for the people living in this region. Streptococcus agalactiae, a Group B Streptococcus (GBS), is an important camel pathogen. Here we present the first epidemiological study based on genetic and phenotypic data from African camel derived GBS. Ninety-two GBS were characterized using multilocus sequence typing (MLST), capsular polysaccharide typing and in vitro antimicrobial susceptibility testing. We analysed the GBS using Bayesian linkage, phylogenetic and minimum spanning tree analyses and compared them with human GBS from East Africa in order to investigate the level of genetic exchange between GBS populations in the region. Camel GBS sequence types (STs) were distinct from other STs reported so far. We mapped specific STs and capsular types to major disease complexes caused by GBS. Widespread resistance (34%) to tetracycline was associated with acquisition of the tetM gene that is carried on a Tn916-like element, and observed primarily among GBS isolated from mastitis. The presence of tetM within different MLST clades suggests acquisition on multiple occasions. Wound infections and mastitis in camels associated with GBS are widespread and should ideally be treated with antimicrobials other than tetracycline in East Africa. 相似文献

Denileukin Diftitox (ONTAK®, DAB389 IL-2) is a recombinant DNA-derived fusion protein depleting cells that express high-affinity IL-2 receptor. Important cell targets are CD4+CD25+Foxp3+ regulatory T cells (Treg). Elimination of immunosuppressive Treg by Denileukin Diftitox may provide a way to modulate immune tolerance following stem cell transplantation. Here, we combined Treg depletion with a vaccination approach to induce donor-specific immune reactions. To investigate this approach we chose the mixed chimerism canine stem cell transplantation model which represents a high state of tolerance between two hematopoietic systems. The aim was therefore to induce a graft versus hematopoiesis effect thereby converting mixed to full donor chimerism. Dog leukocyte antigen identical siblings that had developed a stable mixed chimerism after non-myeloablative stem cell transplantation received a single dose of Denileukin Diftitox (18 μg/kg, i.v.) followed by several cell-lysate vaccinations. Host peripheral blood mononuclear cell lysates combined with CpG-ODN, and Montanide® ISA 51 were locally applied. In vitro studies demonstrated that canine Treg are a target of Denileukin Diftitox. The suppression of T-cell proliferation by Treg was abolished by addition of Denileukin Diftitox (10 nM). An increase of proliferation of median 300% (range: 200%–425%) was observed. No change in donor chimerism was observed after administration of Denileukin Diftitox and vaccination. This study highlights that application of Denileukin Diftitox resulted in a depletion of Treg followed by an increase of immune response in vitro. The influence of transplanting on height, root neck diameter, and grading was investigated for Carpinus betulus, Quercus robur, and Euonymus europaeus on three sites with different climate and soil properties. Additionally, plant growth was characterized by the shoot-to-root ratio, height-to-root neck diameter, and proportions of coarse and fine roots. The significance of the growth parameters as criteria for survival is discussed. Transplanting influenced shoot growth more than root growth. The growth of the plants was highly site-dependent. Transplanting increased growth most on the site with the best conditions for water and N supply. Transplanting had no effect on grading for the site with the worst water supply. 相似文献

The Friedrich-Loeffler-Institut, founded in 1910 by Friedrich Loeffler, the discoverer of the first animal virus, foot-and-mouth disease virus, is the oldest virological research facility in the world. Beyond viruses, its area of competence has significantly expanded since its foundation and now also covers bacterial, parasitic and prion diseases of livestock, poultry and aquatic animals. Presently located at four sites within Germany (Insel Riems, Jena,Tübingen,Wusterhausen) the tasks of the institute as delineated in the Animal Disease Act encompass research on infectious animal diseases including zoonoses, import/export examinations, epidemiological studies in case of outbreaks of notifiable animal diseases, acting as reference laboratory for notifiable animal diseases and nationwide quality management of diagnosis of notifiable animal diseases. It is obliged to publish and maintain up-to-date diagnostic regimes for notifiable animal diseases, and it publishes a yearly report on animal health in Germany. With the increasing importance of infectious diseases of animals, in particular those potentially harmful to man (zoonoses), the Friedrich-Loeffler-Institut will be moving into new facilities including laboratories and animal facilities up to the highest biosafety level at its main site Insel Riems on the occasion of its 100th anniversary. 相似文献

Within the framework of a cooperative research project, turkey health as well as numerous aspects of animal welfare were examined in various intensive commercial farms with varying rearing forms. The present study demonstrates the prevalence of skin injuries concerning living animals as well as carcasses of slaughtered turkeys of both sexes. Although all turkeys were debeaked, prevalences of skin injuries at a value of 12.8% with male turkeys and 13.8% with female turkeys could be found at the age of 16 weeks. Within the scope of medically inspections skin injuries were mainly established in the head region, especially the snood as well as in the region of the back. By means of their clinical picture pecking wounds and scratch injuries could be distinguished. Skin lesion produced primary as a result of scratching the skin surface, could be enlarged by the animal itself or by conspecifics by beak pecking, especially after bleeding, in spite of debeaked upper beak. Injuries in the head region, especially of the snood, could be explained mainly as a result of pecking by conspecifics by reason of their clinical picture and were found mainly in male turkeys. Skin injuries in the region of the back, especially at the coxal tuberosity, were identified primarily as scratch marks. They were found mainly in female turkeys. A statistically significant correlation of the injury prevalence to particular husbandry parameters discussed in the literature as "predisposing" or "limiting" factors (e.g., population density, light regime or offer of employment material) could not be established in this study. At the meat inspection fresh scratching injuries at the chest and the hind legs were diagnosed most often. Especially fresh injuries of the carcass point to a misguided behaviour of the staff concerning animal handling during loading and transport which is not conform to animal welfare. 相似文献

Habitat fragmentation is a major cause for species loss, but its effect on invertebrates with low active dispersal power,
like terrestrial gastropods, has rarely been studied. Such species can not cross a hostile habitat matrix, for which the predictions
of island theory, such as positive relations between species richness and patch size, should apply. In order to test this
prediction, we studied gastropod species diversity by assessing gastropod assemblage characteristics from 35 sites in 19 fragments
of deciduous old-growth forests in the Lower Rhine Embayment, Germany. Assemblages differed between larger (≥700 ha) and smaller
forests (<400 ha), those of large forests held a higher percentage of forest species. Although α-diversity was similar between
the two forest size classes, small forests often comprised matrix species, resulting in a higher β-diversity. Edge effects
on the species richness of matrix species were noticeable up to 250 m into the forest. Hierarchical partitioning revealed
that distance to disturbances (external edge, internal edges like roads) explained most assemblage variables, whereas forest
size and woodland cover within a 1 km radius from the sites explained only a few assemblage variables. Densities of two forest-associated
species, Discus rotundatus and Arion fuscus, decreased with forest size. Yet, forest size was positively correlated with richness of typical forest species and densities
of Limax cinereoniger. The latter species seems to need forests of >1,000 ha, i.e., well above the size of most fragments. In conclusion, the prediction
is valid only for forest species. The response to fragmentation is species specific and seems to depend on habitat specialization
and macroclimatic conditions.

We studied the leaf litter-dwelling fauna of managed deciduous forests and primeval reference sites in Western and Central Europe and addressed the questions if the higher overall species richness close to downed coarse woody debris (CWD) is related to intra-specific or inter-specific aggregation, if the aggregation pattern changes with the amount of CWD on the forest floor, and how much CWD is needed for different taxa. The analysis is based on shelled Gastropoda, Diplopoda/Isopoda, Chilopoda and Coleoptera. Among-sample heterogeneity was lower close to CWD than distant from CWD. This was most pronounced in Diplopoda/Isopoda and Gastropoda. Diplopoda/Isopoda are comparatively mobile and assemblages were already quite homogenous close to CWD at levels above 5 m3 downed deadwood ha−1. Gastropoda have a low mobility, and more than 20 m3 downed deadwood ha−1 is needed for assemblage homogeneity. We further focused on the Gastropoda as sensitive indicators. Enhanced densities and species richness close to CWD were not a simple function of leaf litter weight, thus effects of densities on heterogeneity are not solely driven by leaf litter accumulation close to CWD. In contrast to euryecious litter-dwellers such as the Punctidae, stenecious slow active dispersers such as the Clausiliidae clearly require more than 20 m3 CWD ha−1 for an even distribution. Specialists depending on CWD even seem to have gone extinct in some managed forests. For conserving the litter-dwelling fauna, we propose a target of at least 20 m3 downed CWD ha−1 in already managed forests and rigorous restrictions for deadwood removal from still (almost) pristine systems. 相似文献
