In species with seeds losing viability shortly after dispersal and exhibiting inherently low germination, quick decisions are required with respect to seeds that should be selected to maximize germination success and vigorous growth of seedlings. In ‘hollong’ (Dipterocarpus macrocarpus Vesque), I address the following questions: (a) are seeds that germinate randomly distributed within a seed population, (b) are subpopulations of viable and non-viable seeds separable, (c) does seed size predict which seeds germinate and (d) does seed size predict time required for germination and seedling vigour? Two estimators of seed size, diameter and weight, demonstrated a significant positive linear relationship endorsing assumption that accumulation of mass increases with increase in diameter of seeds. A threshold for selection of potential seeds for germination could not be derived from diameter measurements since seeds in an entire range of diameter did or did not germinate. All seeds <11 g did not germinate, but this threshold lies at the far lower end of the weight range and allows rejection of only a few seeds and acceptance of many seeds that will not germinate. A risk of potential seeds being rejected or non-viable seeds being picked exists if selection was derived from either diameter or weight. However, viable seeds could be better predicted from a scatter-plot of diameter on x-axis and weight on y-axis. Seeds showed a fan-shaped scatter and those developing the lower blade of the fan did not germinate while those following the handle were successful. Hence, two subpopulations segregated, but with a fuzzy edge. Mean diameter and mean weight of germinated seeds were significantly greater than those of ungerminated seeds. Most ungerminated seeds were those that had relatively smaller weight compared to their diameter. Although some large diameter seeds with small weight did germinate, but failed to develop into seedlings. Germination time and seedling vigour parameters (height, leaf number and collar diameter) were correlated both with diameter and weight. [14C]metalaxyl applied to seeds, roots and leaves of cowpea was readily taken up by all plant parts and a major fraction of it was retained within the treated leaves and seeds but not in the roots. The fungicide exhibited ambimobility inside the plant. When applied to the middle of leaflets, metalaxyl mobilised towards proximal and distal parts of the leaflet. Intraleaflet movement seemed to result from translocation through veins and diffusion through cell walls and intercellular spaces. Accumulation of metalaxyl at tips and margins of primary leaves followed application to roots. Metalaxyl was readily extracted from most plant parts except cotyledons and only 0.8% of the fungicide applied as a seed treatment was recovered from 50-day-old plants. 相似文献

The effect of Cu on survival time, O2 consumption and accumulation of Cu in barnacles, Balanus amphitrite amphitrite and Balanus tintinnabulum tintinnabulum was studied. B. amphitrite amphitrite were found to survive longer than B. tintinnabulum tintinnabulum at all concentrations of Cu. Copper reduced the O2 consumption of both barnacles, but the reduction was greater with B. tintinnabulum tintinnabulum. Copper accumulation in soft parts of the barnacles increased with increasing Cu concentration and time. The barnacles accumulated Cu up to a particular limit (166.7 ± 8.98 μg g?1 in B. amphitrite amphitrite and 173.6 ± 12.17 μg g?1 in B. tintinnabulum tintinnabulum) at all Cu concentrations beyond which they died. 相似文献

Measurement of total leaf area per plant in crop improvement programmes for a variety of purposes is often very tedious and time consuming. In this paper, we offer a rapid and non-destructive method of estimating the total leaf area in sunflower at the time of anthesis. We show that multiplying the leaf area of a specific leaf position from the apex by the total number of leaves per plant yields total leaf area with more than 95 % accuracy. The specific leaf position for any given genotype in sunflower can be arrived at by multiplying the total number of leaves per plant by the factor 0.355 and rounding off to the nearest highest integer. This technique can be used for the rapid estimation of leaf area per plant at anthesis for any given genotype of sunflower. 相似文献

The present study was conducted to evaluate the function of Bacillus subtilis-based direct-fed microbials (DFMs) on macrophage functions, i.e., nitric oxide (NO) production and phagocytosis in broiler chickens. DFMs used in this study were eight single strains designated as Bs2084, LSSAO1, 3AP4, Bs18, 15AP4, 22CP1, Bs27, and Bs278, and one multiple strain DFM product (Avicorr™) containing equal amount of Bs2084, LSSAO1 and 15AP4. NO concentrations were monitored in plasma and in the supernatants from the peripheral blood-derived monocytic cells (PBMC)-derived macrophages stimulated by either chicken recombinant interferon gamma (IFNγ) or lipopolysaccharide (LPS) from Escherichia coli or Salmonella typhi. In addition, phagocytosis of fluorescent beads and green fluorescent protein (GFP)-labeled Salmonella by PBMC-derived macrophage was assayed. Plasma NO levels were significantly higher in groups given 3AP4 or Bs27 diets compared with the control group at days 7 and 14. NO production by PBMC-derived macrophages stimulated with IFNγ or LPS was apparent, although the effect was strain-dependent. Phagocytosis of fluorescent beads or GFP-labeled Salmonella by macrophages was augmented in groups on DFM-supplemented diets compared with those fed the control diet. Huanglongbing (HLB) is one of the most devastating diseases of citrus worldwide, and is caused by a phloem-limited fastidious prokaryotic alpha-proteobacterium that is yet to be cultured. In this study, a combination of traditional polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and real-time PCR targeting the putative DNA polymerase and 16S rDNA sequence of 'Candidatus Liberibacter asiaticus,' respectively, were used to examine the distribution and movement of the HLB pathogen in the infected citrus tree. We found that 'Ca. Liberibacter asiaticus' was distributed in bark tissue, leaf midrib, roots, and different floral and fruit parts, but not in endosperm and embryo, of infected citrus trees. Quantification analysis of the HLB bacterium indicated that it was distributed unevenly in planta and ranged from 14 to 137,031 cells/mug of total DNA in different tissues. A relatively high concentration of 'Ca. Liberibacter asiaticus' was observed in fruit peduncles. Our data from greenhouse-infected plants also indicated that 'Ca. Liberibacter asiaticus' was transmitted systemically from infection site to different parts of the plant. Understanding the distribution and movement of the HLB bacterium inside an individual citrus tree is critical for discerning its virulence mechanism and to develop management strategies for HLB. 相似文献

Effect of combinations of millet and legume and processing on digestibility, biological value and net protein utilization was evaluated using albino rats. The millets and legumes selected for the study include sorghum, pearl millet, finger millet, chickpea and green gram (P radiatus). The processes tested include dehulling, boiling, roasting, malting and baking. Among the combinations tested, the sorghum-chickpea combination had significantly (p<0.05) higher digestibility. Between the processes tested, roasting resulted in significantly higher net protein utilization. Results of biological study on biscuits prepared by using millet and legume combination flours, indicated the biscuits to be of good protein quality. 相似文献

Seven varieties of groundnuts of varying kernel size were selected to study the relation between kernel size and nutritional quality. Results indicated that no significant (r=0.22) difference was found in oil contents among the various varieties which ranged from 46–52 percent. Protein contents ranged from 17–25.2 percent. Protein content of small seed varieties was high compared to bold seeded varieties, whereas sugar content of bold seeded varieties was higher. No significant differences in amino acid and fatty acid compositions were observed among the varieties tested. In vitro digestibility of protein tended to be slightly less but not significantly so in bold seeded varieties compared to small and medium size varieties. Niacin content of bold seeded varieties was slightly higher compared to other varieties. 相似文献

This research was implemented to study the effects of androgenic gland ablation in the white shrimp Litopenaeus vannamei to explore sex reversal potential as an alternative technology for monosex female mariculture based on the sex dimorphic growth of this species. The surgical procedure was applied to male postlarvae (PL) at different ages, after external sex differentiation, as well as in sex undifferentiated PL. Andrectomized males regenerated normal appendices including pereiopods and pleopods; however, body growth and relative size of regenerated petasmas and appendices masculinae were statistically inferior (P ? 0.05) to control males. Spermatogenesis in andrectomized males was active, but a phenomenon of degradation of spermatids and reproductive tissues was detected. No sex reversal was accomplished regardless of PL age from sex undifferentiated stages (PL38) to sex differentiated stages (?PL55). The complete regeneration of sexual characters in andrectomized L. vannamei (Dendrobranchiata) is different from previous reports from Decapoda. 相似文献

Shade present in silvopasture systems could reduce heat stress associated with microclimatic conditions that characterize
warm-weather portions of the year on the Coastal Plain of the Southeast USA. Objectives of this research were to: (1) quantify
diurnal distribution patterns of landscape use and behavior of cattle in loblolly-pine (Pinus taeda) silvopasture versus open-pasture landscapes, and (2) relate observed differences in landscape use and cattle behavior patterns
between the two pastures to differences in microclimatic conditions, and forage quantity and quality. The research was conducted
in Chipley, Florida USA within a 5-ha cell of a loblolly-pine-bahiagrass (Paspalum notatum) silvopasture (tree age 20 year), and a 5-ha open bahiagrass pasture with unlimited access to an adjacent 1-ha wooded area.
One-day observations of diurnal distribution and behavior of cattle were conducted in March, June, and September 2007; microclimatic
conditions were measured, and forage quantity and quality were estimated within each landscape. Cattle utilized the landscape
more evenly in the silvopasture versus the open-pasture and this difference was mainly attributed to reduced solar radiation
recorded in the silvopasture. Grazing was the dominant behavior in the silvopasture while loafing was dominant in the open-pasture.
Shade present in silvopasture appeared to reduce heat stress for cattle grazing during warm-weather portions of the year on
the Coastal Plain of the Southeast USA. Further study is needed to determine how this reduction in heat stress influences
cattle performance in southern-pine silvopasture, and the nature and extent of the interactions among animal distribution
and behavior, microclimatic conditions, and forage characteristics in these systems. 相似文献
