Normal motility of the cecum and right ventral colon in ponies   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
To study the normal motility of the cecum and right ventral colon (RVC) in 3 mature Shetland ponies, a 6-part, indwelling, intraluminal catheter system was used to measure intraluminal pressure changes. Three catheters were placed in the cecum at 10, 25, and 40 cm from the cecocolic orifice, and 3 catheters were placed in the RVC at 10, 20, and 30 cm from the cecocolic orifice. Recordings were made during the interdigestive period beginning 2 weeks after surgical operation was done. Frequent, low-amplitude peaks (0.35 +/- 0.13 coordinated peaks/min) were seen involving the cecal body and caudal cecal base, which represented a haustra-to-haustra mixing pattern. Coordinated pressure peaks originated in the cecal body and progressed to the cranial cecal base (0.07 +/- 0.01/min) or originated in the cranial cecal base and progressed to the cecal body (0.07 +/- 0.04/min). Associated with a loud rush of ingesta heard on transabdominal auscultation and progression of liquid ingesta confirmed with barium contrast radiography, there was a series of coordinated, progressive pressure peaks which originated in the cecal body, sequentially involved the cecal base, traversed the cecocolic orifice, and extended into the RVC (0.36 +/- 0.05/min). It seemed that a pacemaker region existed in the cecal body and initiated the important aborally propagated progressive pattern responsible for the transit of ingesta from the cecum to the RVC. A separate mechanism for the transit of gas was not identified. In the RVC, infrequent, nondirectional, low-amplitude segmental pressure peaks (0.12 +/- 0.06/min), and aborally progressive coordinated pressure peaks originating at the beginning of the RVC (0.09 +/- 0.02/min), occurred.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献

Myoelectric activity of the ileum, cecum, and right ventral colon (RVC) was studied in 4 mature ponies. Eight Ag-AgCl bipolar recording electrodes were sutured to the seromuscular layer of the ileum (2 electrodes), cecum (4 electrodes), and RVC (2 electrodes). Myoelectric activity was studied beginning 10 days after surgery. Eight, 60-minute recording sessions were performed in each pony during the interdigestive period, which was the period 3 to 7 hours after the morning feeding. On separate days, food was withheld for 24 hours, and 90-minute recordings were obtained during the nonfeeding period. Ponies were then fed a normal ration, and recordings were continued to obtain data for the digestive (feeding) period. All phases of the migrating myoelectric complex were seen at both ileal electrodes during the interdigestive period, including the periods of no spiking activity (phase 1), irregular spiking activity (phase 2), and regular spiking activity (phase 3). Phase 2 occupied 77% of the total recording time, and the mean duration of phases 1, 2, and 3 was 3.4 +/- 0.2, 12.8 +/- 1.2, and 6.7 +/- 0.7 min, respectively. Frequency of ileal slow waves was 11.8 +/- 0.1/min, and spike burst conduction velocity was 4.7 +/- 0.3 cm/s. A complete migrating myoelectric complex was seen in 11 of 32 tracings (34%) and had a mean duration of 24.2 +/- 2.6 min. The ileal migrating action potential complex, most often seen in phase 2, had a frequency of 4.8 +/- 0.5 spike bursts/h and a conduction velocity of 13.6 +/- 0.4 cm/s.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献

Effects of xylazine HCl (0.5 mg/kg of body weight, IV) and/or butorphanol tartrate (0.04 mg/kg, IV) or neostigmine methylsulfate (0.022 mg/kg, IV) on myoelectric activity of the cecum and right ventral colon were studied in 4 conscious female ponies. Eight bipolar Ag/AgCl electrodes were sequentially placed on the seromuscular layer of the cecum (6 electrodes) and right ventral colon (2 electrodes). Recordings began 30 minutes before and continued for 90 minutes after drug administration. Each drug or drug combination was studied on 2 occasions in each pony. Two major patterns of coordinated spike bursts were identified. A series of coordinated spike bursts began at the cecal base and was conducted to the cecal apex (pattern I). A series of coordinated spike bursts began at the cecal apex, traversed the cecum, cecocolic orifice, and right ventral colon and was termed a progressive pattern (pattern II). Xylazine administration caused a significant decrease in patterns I and II for 20 minutes (P less than 0.05). Butorphanol tartrate administration caused a significant decrease in the progressive pattern for 10 minutes (P less than 0.05) without affecting the orally directed pattern. Administration of the combination of xylazine/butorphanol significantly decreased the frequency of pattern I for 40 minutes (P less than 0.05) and pattern II for 30 minutes (P less than 0.05). Neostigmine administration caused a significant increase in the frequency of pattern II for 30 minutes (P less than 0.05) without affecting pattern I (P greater than 0.05). Changes in conduction velocity of pattern I or II or the duration of spiking activity were not significantly different because of any treatment.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To describe myoelectric activity of the spiral colon in healthy cows. ANIMALS: 7 lactating Simmental X Red-Holstein crossbred cows. PROCEDURE: Cows were implanted with 7 pairs of bipolar silver electrodes (4 in the spiral colon and 1 each in the cecum, distal part of the ileum, and proximal loop of the ascending colon [PLAC]). Myo-electric activity was recorded during 4 days for each cow. Patterns were analyzed, using computer-based methods. RESULTS: Myoelectric activity of the spiral colon was closely associated with motility of the ileum and PLAC and showed the typical organization of migrating myoelectric complexes (MMC). The MMC in the bovine spiral colon (bcMMC) had a mean +/- SD duration of 188.6 +/- 30.8 minutes and was divided into 4 phases. Phases I and II lasted 11.3 +/- 1.4 and 159.4 +/- 33.3 minutes, respectively. Phase III (duration, 5.4 +/- 1.2 minutes) was characterized by 5.2 +/- 0.9 regular spindles (35.4 +/- 5.4 seconds) and 1 final elongated spindle (137.2 +/- 56.4 seconds). Phase III most commonly (73.8 +/- 16.1%) was followed by phase IV (duration, 173 +/- 3.6 minutes). Propagation velocity of phase III was 4.4 +/- 0.5 cm/min, and 13.6% of bcMMC were incompletely propagated through the spiral colon. CONCLUSIONS: Myoelectric activity of the bovine spiral colon is composed of a recurring cyclic pattern similar to MMC of the small intestine. Data of colonic myoelectric activity in healthy cows will serve as a basis for studies on cecal dilatation and dislocation in cattle.  相似文献

The changes induced in the electrical activity of the small intestine by atropine sulphate, diphemanil methylsulphate, hyoscine butylbromide and prifinium bromide were studied in conscious sheep fitted with chronically implanted electrodes. Increased spike potential activity was induced by carbachol. The mean slow-wave frequency of the antrum was 7.35 ± 0.18/min with burst of spike potentials randomly superimposed on about 63% of the slow waves. The occurrence of the spike bursts was inhibited for 18—30 min after an intravenous injection of atropine (0.75 mg/kg) and during its infusion at the rate of 0.05 mg/kg/min. The activity of the proximal part of the small intestine, which is characterized by migrating myoelectric complexes moving down slowly at hourly intervals, was replaced by irregular series consisting of spike bursts of about 3 min duration, at intervals of about 12 min for a total of 110 min. Such an effect, in which the level of spike activity was reduced, was also observed with hyoscine, diphemanil and prifinium during 80, 120 and 180 min periods respectively. The injection of carbachol was followed by continuous spike activity in which the mean spike level was nearly doubled, as occurs at the onset of diarrhoea. An inhibitory effect was observed at both antral and duodeno-jejunal levels with the four drugs used, that of hyoscine being least marked. The effect of prifinium was more pronounced than that of atropine or diphemanil, especially on the jejunum. The results suggest that the ability of these drugs to reduce the level of spike activity accompanying disruption of migrating myoelectric complexes and to inhibit the carbachol-induced increased level of spiking may account for the antispasmodic effects observed after the use of anticholinergic drugs in gastrointestinal disorders. Prifinium had the longest lasting effect at both antral and duodeno-jejunal levels and seemed to be a good atropine substitute to alleviate gastro-intestinal hypermotility.  相似文献

As feeding is not a factor disrupting the migrating motor (myoelectric) complex (MMC) in sheep, it is presumed that the fed pattern is absent in this animal species. In turn, feeding may stimulate ovine gastrointestinal motility. To verify this discrepancy the myoelectric activities of the antrum and duodeno-jejunum were recorded in seven adult sheep. Additionally, the relationship between electrical and mechanical activity was tested in four of these animals by means of strain gauge force transducers mounted near the duodenal electrodes. Chronic experiments were conducted in fasted and non-fasted sheep before, during, and after standard feeding. Fodder was offered during the duodenal phases 1, 2a, or 2b of the MMC. Two types of responses to feeding (an unspecific and a specific fed pattern) were denoted. A simple increase in spike burst intensity, i.e. without their special deployment and assessed as the myoelectric activity index (unspecific fed pattern), was observed in the abomasal antrum and small bowel during and after feeding in the course of phase 2b of the MMC in non-fasted and fasted sheep. In the abomasal antrum its duration was longer than in the small intestine. In non-fasted animals the unspecific fed pattern was more pronounced in the abomasal antrum than in the small bowel, while its duration was longer in fasted animals. The specific fed pattern was evoked in the duodeno-jejunum during feeding initiated in the course of phase 2b of the MMC exclusively in non-fasted animals. During this pattern, the spike burst series were significantly reduced compared with those which appeared during phase 2b of the MMC and dispersed single spike bursts predominated. The average duration of the specific fed pattern was 3-4 min and it arrived 2-7 min after feeding onset. In the remaining periods during feeding, the spike burst pattern resembled that often observed during phase 2b of the MMC. Thus the confined fed pattern is present in sheep and its character depends upon the gastrointestinal region and feeding habits.  相似文献

Myoelectric activity in 2 cows instrumented with permanent electrodes in the ileum, cecum, proximal loop of the ascending colon (PLAC), and spiral colon was analyzed after an obstruction developed in the distal small intestine. Results were compared with patterns from a group of 7 normal cows. Myoelectric activity in the ileum immediately orad to the occlusion was characterized by abolition of the migrating myoelectric complex (MMC) and a constant pattern of strong spike bursts of long duration. Cyclic activity was present in all parts of the large intestine, and propagation of phase III activity was evident from proximal to distal. A slight degree of disorganization in phase III propagation was restricted to the spiral colon. Activity cycles tended to be shorter in the cecum and PLAC of both cows with colic than in normal cows, and the intensity of spiking activity was generally lower. Changes in duration of the MMC in the spiral colon (bovine colonic MMC, bcMMC) were inconsistent, but the intensity of spiking activity tended to be lower in phases I and II of both cows compared to controls. The organization of phase III in several spindles typical of the bovine spiral colon was not disrupted, but phase IV of the bcMMC occurred only infrequently. Organized cyclic activity occurred in the large intestine of both cows despite complete disruption of the small intestinal MMC, indicating the presence of mechanisms able to initiate and regulate coordinated myoelectric patterns in the large intestine independent of the small intestine.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the effect of erythromycin on motility of the ileum, cecum, and pelvic flexure of horses during the postoperative and post-recovery periods. ANIMALS: 8 healthy adult horses. PROCEDURE: Horses were anesthetized and bipolar electrodes were implanted in smooth muscle of the ileum, cecum, and pelvic flexure. Approximately 4, 16, and 24 hours (postoperative recording sessions) and at least 8 days (post-recovery recording session) after surgery, myoelectric activity was recorded before and after administration of erythromycin (0.5 mg/kg). RESULTS: Following erythromycin administration, myoelectric activity was increased in the ileum during all postoperative recording sessions but not during the post-recovery recording session. Myoelectric activity was increased in the cecum following erythromycin administration only during the post-recovery recording session. Myoelectric activity was increased in the pelvic flexure following erythromycin administration during all recording sessions. During several recording sessions, there were short periods during which myoelectric activity was significantly decreased following erythromycin administration. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Results suggest that erythromycin has an effect on myoelectric activity of the ileum, cecum, and pelvic flexure in horses; however, prokinetic effects of erythromycin administered during the postoperative period were not always the same as effects obtained when the drug was administered after horses had recovered from the effects of surgical implantation of recording devices. Therefore, caution must be exercised when extrapolating results of prokinetic studies in healthy animals to animals with abnormal gastrointestinal tract motility.  相似文献

Gastric myoelectric activity was measured in 10 dogs with spontaneous gastric dilatation-volvulus (GDV). Myoelectric activity was recorded with temporary, retrievable wire electrodes placed on the serosal surface of the stomach after derotation and tube gastrostomy. Gastric myoelectric activity was recorded for 1 hour daily, beginning with the day of surgery (less than 24 hours), 24, 48, 72, 96, 120, 144, and 168 hours after surgery. Recordings were also obtained for 1 hour daily after feeding, beginning 24 hours after surgery. Bradygastria was the predominate dysrhythmia immediately after surgery and at hour 24. The mean slow wave frequency was more than normal at hours 48 to 168 due to an increase in tachygastria and arrhythmias. The slow wave frequency significantly decreased after feeding at hours 120 and 144. The overall mean percentage of dysrhythmias was significantly decreased after feeding at hour 72 only. The mean percentage of spike activity ranged from 37.7 +/- 12.5 to 75.7 +/- 6.2 throughout the 8-day study period. Thus, gastric myoelectric activity was disrupted in these dogs with spontaneous GDV and subsequent tube gastrostomy. Feeding did not greatly diminish these dysrhythmias.  相似文献

The effects of erythromycin on myoelectric activity of the spiral colon of dairy cows were investigated in a prospective study. Four Simmental x Red-Holstein crossbred cows of similar body weight and condition with seven pairs of bipolar electrodes implanted in the intestine (one each in the distal ileum, caecum and proximal colon, and four in the spiral colon) were included. Erythromycin lactobionate (1 mg kg(-1)) and 0.9% sodium chloride solution (NaCl) were administered to each cow in a random order. Erythromycin was diluted with NaCl and both treatments were administered slowly intravenously over a period of 5 min 1 h after onset of a phase III of the bovine colonic migrating myoelectric complex (bcMMC). A 3-6-day washout period was scheduled between trials. Significant differences between the results of the treatments were observed for spike duration in phase I as well as for spike duration and duration of spiking activity during phase II of the second bcMMC, which were significantly higher after erythromycin treatment than after NaCl. These findings suggest an indirect effect of erythromycin on colonic motility in cattle.  相似文献

The relationship between ileal and colonic electromyographic motility patterns were investigated in six awake cats chronically fitted with subserosal electrodes implanted in the smooth muscles of the ileum and colon. Smooth muscle electrical activity (electromyogram) was recorded in both fed and fasted conditions under a 12-12 hours dark-light schedule. It consisted of electrical long spike bursts having two different patterns for each condition. Short sequences of three to five long spike bursts were propagated either aborally or orally from any part of the colon; they were most frequent during the interdigestive or fasting period and no relationship was observed between these long spike bursts and the electrical activity of the ileum. During the digestive or feeding period, the colonic activity was organized in long sequences of 10-15 long spike bursts, termed migrating spike bursts, which started near the caecal junction and propagated aborally to the distal colon. These migrating spike bursts were correlated with the ileal motility. This relationship demonstrated between ileum and colon after feeding is dependent upon the amount of food intake.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate effects of IV administration of penicillin G potassium (KPEN) or potassium chloride (KCl) on defecation and myoelectric activity of the cecum and pelvic flexure of horses. ANIMALS: 5 healthy horses. PROCEDURE: Horses with 12 bipolar electrodes on the cecum and pelvic flexure received KPEN or KCl solution by IV bolus 4 hours apart. Each horse received the following: 2 X 10(7) U of KPEN (high-dose KPEN) followed by 34 mEq of KCl (high-dose KCl), 1 X 10(7) U of KPEN (low-dose KPEN) followed by 17 mEq of KCl (low-dose KCl), high-dose KCl followed by high-dose KPEN, and low-dose KCl followed by low-dose KPEN. Number of defecations and myoelectric activity were recorded for 60 minutes. The first three 5-minute segments and first four 15-minute segments of myoelectric activity were analyzed. RESULTS: Number of defecations during the first 15-minute segment was greater after high-dose KPEN treatment than after high-dose or low-dose KCl treatment. Compared with reference indexes, myoelectric activity was greater in the pelvic flexure for the first 5-minute segment after high-dose KCl treatment, in the cecum and pelvic flexure for the first 5-minute segment and in the pelvic flexure for the first 15-minute segment after low-dose KPEN treatment, and in the pelvic flexure for the first and second 5-minute segments and the first three 15-minute segments after high-dose KPEN treatment. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE: IV administration of KPEN stimulates defecation and myoelectric activity of the cecum and pelvic flexure in horses. Effects of KPEN may be beneficial during episodes of ileus.  相似文献

Lateral cecal arterial blood flow, carotid arterial pressure, heart rate, and mechanical activity in the duodenum, right ventral colon, cecal body, and cecal apex were measured in 6 conscious healthy horses for 60 minutes during and for 120 minutes after IV infusion of 0.9% NaCl solution (control) or fenoldopam. There were no significant changes in these measurements during or after infusion of 0.9% NaCl (saline) solution. Fenoldopam, a selective dopamine-1 receptor agonist, was administered in saline solution at dosages of 0.01, 0.05, and 0.1 micrograms/kg/min. Intravenous infusion of fenoldopam at 0.01 microgram/kg/min significantly increased heart rate, but did not change average carotid arterial pressure or lateral cecal arterial blood flow. Intravenous infusion of fenoldopam at both 0.05 and 0.1 microgram/kg/min significantly increased heart rate, significantly decreased average carotid arterial pressure, and significantly increased lateral cecal arterial blood flow. Intravenous infusion of fenoldopam at 0.01, 0.05, and 0.1 microgram/kg/min did not significantly change the mechanical activity measured by the area under the strain gauge deflection curve for the duodenum, right ventral colon, cecal body, or cecal apex. These results suggest that dopaminergic-1 receptors are present on the colonic vasculature of horses. There was no evidence, however, that dopaminergic-1 receptors exist on the visceral smooth muscle of the duodenum, right ventral colon, cecal body, or cecal apex of horses.  相似文献

Myoelectrical and myomechanical activities of the distal portion of the jejunum and pelvic flexure were studied in 7 ponies, using permanently implanted monopolar and bipolar stainless steel electrodes. Dental acrylic embedded recording electrodes were surgically sutured to the serosal surface of the distal portion of the jejunum and pelvic flexure. Myoelectrically, regular spike bursts and irregular spike bursts were observed in the jejunum. Short spike bursts and long spike bursts were recorded and associated with spike potentials, using impedance recording techniques. Electrical and mechanical data could be monitored simultaneously from the same recording electrode, using separate channels on a physiograph. This method proved effective to monitor periodically myomechanical activity at the same time that myoelectrical activity was being evaluated. The recording system required fewer recording devices to be attached to the intestinal tract, was an inexpensive method of obtaining myomechanical recordings, and did not alter markedly the myoelectrical activity when mechanical activity was being monitored.  相似文献

Microbial and fermentation changes in the ingesta of the large intestine and their influence on the pathogenesis of acute lactic acidosis were studied in 4 cows fitted with permanent cannulas in the ileum and cecum. Feed mixture containing 65% of maize was infused into the cecum for several days in amounts of 2 and 4 kg per day. The daily amount was divided in 8 equal portions and given with 3 l of warm physiologic saline solution. During the period of ad libitum feeding of hay, the pH values in cecal digesta were 7.4 to 7.6 and the amount of total volatile fatty acids 40-60 mmol/kg with high molar percentage (87-90 mol%) of acetic acid. As to lactic acid only the L(+) lactic isomer was found in a concentration of about 0.4 mmol/kg. Infusion of low amounts of starch induced mild lactic acid fermentation in the cecum associated with a pronounced increase in the concentration of L(+) and D (-) lactic acid to peak levels of 80 +/- 10 mmol/kg and 7 +/- 1 mmol/kg, respectively. Lactic acid fermentation ceased within 2 to 3 days indicating that the gut microflora had adapted to the starch infusion. Slight decreases of blood pH and bicarbonates in blood as well as a moderate increase of netto acid-base excretion in urine indicated mild changes of acid-base balance, but clinically no pathological symptoms were observed. Higher amounts of infused starch caused pronounced lactic acid production in the large intestine which persisted throughout the experiment. Peak L(+) and D(-) lactic acid concentration in cecal digesta reached on the average 137 +/- 16 mmol/kg and 45 +/- 7 mmol/kg respectively. Significant decreases of blood pH values from 7.41 +/- 0.02 to 7.18 +/- 0.08 (P < 0.001), actual bicarbonate from 28.2 +/- 3.2 to 11.0 +/- 2.6 mmol/l (P < 0.001) and base excess from 3.9 +/- 3.6 to -15.2 +/- 3.8 mmol/l (P < 0.001) were observed. D (-) lactic acid concentration in blood increased to 3.2 +/- 0.4 mmol/l, but L(+) lactic acid values remained unchanged under 1 mmol/l. Clear clinical symptoms of indigestion and intoxication characterized by severe inappetence, ruminal stasis and general weakness were also observed. Typical clinical symptoms of disease as well as blood and urine changes in acid-base balance indicated that lactic acid fermentation in the large intestine contributes considerably to the pathogenesis of acute ruminant lactic acidosis.  相似文献

Myoelectric activity was monitored from the terminal ileum, cecum, and colonic pelvic flexure by use of AgpAgCl bipolar electrodes in 4 adult horses before, during, and after general anesthesia. Horses were anesthetized by way of 3 commonly used regimens, including xylazine (1.1 mg/kg of body weight) and ketamine hydrochloride (2.2 mg/kg); thiopental sodium (7.7 mg/kg), followed by halothane vaporized in oxygen; and thiopental sodium (2.5 g) in guaifenesin (100 mg/ml) solution given to effect, followed by halothane in oxygen. All 3 anesthetic regimens decreased intestinal spike-burst activity in the areas monitored. The slowest return to preanesthetic myoelectric activity was observed after xylazine and ketamine administration. After both of the barbiturate/halothane anesthetic regimens, there was a rebound increase in spike-burst frequency, without alteration in the proportion of propagative myoelectric events. All 3 anesthetic regimens appeared to reset the timing of the small and large intestinal migrating myoelectric complexes. By 9 hours after recovery from anesthesia, the effects of anesthesia, irrespective of regimen, had disappeared. Although anesthesia significantly (P less than 0.05) altered intestinal myoelectric activity, no particular anesthetic regimen had a prolonged effect. Results of our study indicate that the particular chosen regimen of general anesthesia is unimportant in development of motility disturbances in horses after anesthesia.  相似文献

OBJECTIVES: To report a surgical technique for treatment of nonreducible cecocolic intussusception and outcome in 8 horses. STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective study. ANIMALS: Eight horses with nonreducible cecocolic intussusception treated by cecal amputation through a right ventral colotomy. METHODS: Data were obtained from medical records and telephone conversations by using a standardized questionnaire. The large colon was exteriorized and, if necessary, evacuated of its contents through a pelvic flexure enterotomy. A second colotomy was made on the ventral surface of the right ventral colon (RVC) centered over or immediately distal to the intussusceptum. In most horses, attempts to manually reduce the intussusception by pushing the cecum from within the RVC through the cecocolic orifice were unsuccessful. Invaginated cecum was then pulled into the RVC and amputated; the cecum was either ligated with umbilical tape or sutured proximal to the site of amputation. After amputation, the remainder of the invaginated cecum was reduced. After further resection to healthy tissue, the typhlectomy was closed with a double-inverting suture pattern. RESULTS: The median horse age was 2 years (range, 1 to 8 years). Duration of colic ranged from 6 hours to 6 months. Median surgical time was 180 minutes (range, 135 to 300 minutes). Median duration of antibiotic therapy was 7 days (range, 5 to 14 days). Median duration of hospitalization was 12 days (range, 6 to 21 days). All horses survived to hospital discharge. One horse died 3 months postoperatively; however, the remainder survived (median survival, 30 months; range, 6 to 96 months) and returned to or exceeded previous function. CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Despite some contamination during surgery, horses with nonreducible cecocolic intussusception that underwent this method of surgical treatment had a good prognosis.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To describe myoelectric patterns in the intestines of cows after electrode implantation. ANIMALS: 7 lactating Simmental-Red Holstein cows. PROCEDURE: Cows were implanted with 7 pairs of bipolar silver electrodes (1 each in the ileum, cecum, and proximal loop of the ascending colon (PLAC) and 4 in the spiral colon). Myoelectric activity was monitored during 10 periods within the first 3 weeks after surgery. Recordings from the first 2 weeks were compared with recordings from the third week, which was considered a steady-state condition. RESULTS: Significant changes over time were detected for 18 of 57 variables, including 3 variables describing myoelectric activity of the ileum, 6 variables of the cecum, 6 variables of the PLAC, and 3 variables of the spiral colon. Compared with values for the steady-state condition, 16 variables differed significantly for the 14-day period after surgery (7 variables until day 11, 2 variables until day 8, 4 variables until day 5, 1 variable until day 3, and 2 variables until day 2 after electrode implantation). None of the variables had significant changes that lasted only 1 day after surgery. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Significant changes were observed for several variables of myoelectric activity in all intestinal segments until as late as 11 days after electrode implantation, whereas a steady-state condition was reached 14 days after surgery. Effects of drugs, manipulations, or nutrition regimens on myoelectric activity of the bovine digestive tract should be evaluated no sooner than 2 weeks after electrode implantation.  相似文献

The objective of this study was to determine the characteristics based on ultrasonographic examination of the stomach, duodenum, jejunum, cecum, and peritoneal fluid in normal adult ponies. Abdominal ultrasonographic examination was performed in nine unsedated standing ponies. The duodenum was examined at three sites and the jejunum in 12 regions. Wall thickness, contractility, distention, and luminal contents were recorded. Stomach wall thickness and location, cecal wall thickness, and peritoneal fluid location and character were recorded. Statistical analysis was performed. Wall thicknesses (in cm) were 0.431 +/- 0.069 for the stomach, 0.188 +/- 0.033 for the duodenum (at all sites), 0.195 +/- 0.031 for the jejunum (at all regions), and 0.179 +/- 0.031 for the cecum. Duodenal contractions per minute were 3.78 +/- 1.10. The stomach spanned 5.14 +/- 0.9 intercostal spaces, with the 8th intercostal space being the most cranial and the 15th intercostal space being the most caudal space through which the stomach was identified. It was possible to identify the jejunum in all ponies dorsal to the left dorsal colon and from the ventral abdominal wall. Peritoneal fluid was identified in six ponies. Peritoneal fluid was usually seen transiently and most commonly in the ventral aspect of the abdominal cavity or around the duodenum. Overall, the ponie's abdominal ultrasonographic examinations revealed wall thicknesses that were less than the published normal ranges for horses. It appears that ponies may have increased duodenal contractility than horses and that the conformation of ponies may change the locations for imaging the stomach.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate whether changes in myoelectrical activity in the cecum and large colon of horses can be detected via multichannel electrointestinography (EIG). ANIMALS: 6 healthy mature horses. PROCEDURES: Each horse underwent 3 EIG procedures. Intestinal myoelectrical activity (cecum and large colon) was recorded during a 20-minute period following i.v. administration of physiologic saline (0.9% NaCl) solution (20 mL; baseline), erythromycin lactobionate (0.5 mg/kg), or detomidine (0.015 mg/kg); intestinal contractions were concurrently viewed via B-mode ultrasonography. By use of computer software, 8-channel EIG recordings were analyzed and the mean of the dominant frequency (a measure of the rhythmicity of gastric electrical activity) expressed in cycles per minute (cpm) was obtained. Total power (muV(2)) was calculated, and treatment effect was expressed as the power ratio (ie, treatment-associated power divided by the baseline power). RESULTS: The dominant frequency cpm values were not stable, and no significant differences between treatments were detected. Compared with the effects of saline solution treatment, detomidine significantly reduced the mean cecal and colonic power ratios. Erythromycin significantly reduced the cecal power ratio and increased the colonic power ratio, although the increase was significant in only 1 channel. Ultrasonographic findings and total power (predominantly from the long-distance electrode pairs) were significantly correlated. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE: In horses, EIG was useful for assessment of changes in myoelectrical activity in the cecum and large colon. Multiple electrodes should be used to cover a larger area of the intestine, and agreement between multiple channels is needed to make the analysis meaningful.  相似文献
