This study aimed at assessing the dissolution rates of hydrated lime, Ca(OH)2 in fresh, oligohaline, mesohaline and euhaline waters and discussing its significance for liming of shrimp culture ponds. Appropriate volumes of seawater and distilled water were mixed to prepare oligohaline (1–4 g/L) and mesohaline waters (4–15 g/L). One gram of analytical grade calcium carbonate, CaCO3, or one gram of analytical grade calcium hydroxide, Ca(OH)2, were applied in 10‐L gallons filled with seawater (39.9 g/L), 10.7 g/L, 4.2 g/L and distilled water (0.0 g/L). The final TA of water was significantly higher for Ca(OH)2 than for CaCO3 only at salinities 4.2 and 10.7 g/L. It was concluded that hydrated lime, Ca(OH)2 is a better liming option than agricultural limestone, CaCO3 for moderately saline, hard and/or buffered waters (?4.5 ≤ Langelier saturation index, LSI ≤ ?0.7). In poorly saline, hard and/or buffered waters (LSI < ?4.5), limestone and lime would increase water TA similarly. Neither limestone nor lime should be applied on highly saline, hard and/or buffered waters (LSI > ?0.7) because a TA decrease is expected.  相似文献

Agricultural limestone and burnt lime are applied either to the water during shrimp production or to pond bottoms between shrimp crops. However, unless the total alkalinity and total hardness of pond water is below 50 mg/L as equivalent CaC03 or the pond soils are acidic (pH < 7), liming is of little or no value. The use of burnt lime should be avoided because this material can cause high pH in water and soil. Chemical fertilizers or manures are used to fertilize brackishwater ponds. Fertilization programs for brackishwater ponds usually require more nitrogen (N) than those for freshwater ponds. Phosphorus (P) fertilization is important both in brackishwater and freshwater ponds. Because water is exchanged often in brackishwater ponds, fertilizer should be applied in small doses and at frequent intervals. Most managers of brackishwater ponds prefer a large proportion of diatoms in the phytoplankton community. An N:P application ratio of 20:l in ponds favors diatoms; in fiberglass tanks with water of low silica concentration, fertilization with silica encouraged an abundance of diatoms.  相似文献

Common water quality variables in nine, inland low‐salinity shrimp ponds in Alabama exhibited wide variation in concentrations among ponds and over time. Shrimp performance also varied considerably among ponds in 2008 as follows: survival, 16–128%; production, 928–5950 kg/ha; feed conversion ratio (FCR), 1.18–2.89. Measured water quality variables were not at concentrations high enough to be lethal to shrimp; but water temperature, dissolved oxygen, carbon dioxide, total ammonia nitrogen, calcium, and magnesium were occasionally outside optimum ranges for shrimp production and may have stressed shrimp. Survival and production both were positively correlated (P < 0.05) with increasing concentrations of methyl orange alkalinity, total alkalinity, and calcium hardness. Negative correlations (P < 0.05) between production and higher pH and water temperature may have resulted from lower water temperature and pH during final days of the crop in ponds harvested in October rather than from an actual effect of temperature and pH on growth. Nevertheless, those variables that were outside optimal ranges or correlated with shrimp survival or growth should be further investigated to ascertain whether or not excursions outside optimum ranges are harmful and to determine if observed correlations are causal.  相似文献

Splitting the recommended weekly dosage of bioaugmentation agent and applied at varying frequencies were tested to determine its effects on water quality and phytoplankton stability in tiger shrimp (Penaeus monodon) grow-out ponds. The supplier's recommended weekly dosage was followed but at varying application frequencies namely: once per week, twice per week, and four times per week for the duration of 120 culture days. A treatment with no bioaugmentation was added as control. Results showed that ammonia and particulate organic matter levels were significantly lower and plankton die-off was greatly minimized if the product was applied four times a week application compared with twice a week and weekly applications. Significant reduction in the number of luminous Vibrio species was observed in ponds with more frequent applications than those with less. For shrimp, survival and production were significantly higher in ponds with twice and four times per week applications compared to the weekly application and the control (P < 0.05). Results of this study indicate that splitting the weekly dosage of bioaugmentation agent and applying it four times per week is highly beneficial and ideal for shrimp culture.  相似文献

Abstract. Temporal trends were determined for primary production and respiration in marine shrimp ponds. Dissolved oxygen concentration (DO) and water temperature were monitored in four marine shrimp, Penaeus vannamei Boone and P. monodon Fabricius , ponds during the grow-out. Wind speed was also measured. Pond production and respiration were estimated based on DO curves. Trend analysis revealed a significant decline in pond net production during grow-out. Ponds were autotrophic at the start of grow-out but heterotrophic at the end. Pond respiration, adjusted for water temperature, increased during grow-out. Temporal trends in pond gross production appeared to be influenced by seasonal patterns in solar radiation intensity. Pond sediments and water column were the chief consumers of oxygen in the pond, accounting for 51% and 45%, respectively, of the total pond oxygen consumed. Despite showing a marked increase during grow-out, shrimp respiration rate was of relatively minor importance in the pond oxygen budget. Pond management strategies to maintain positive pond net production and to mitigate the impact of sediment respiration on pond DO were recommended.  相似文献

The rising atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO2) concentration is increasing the solubility of limestone, calcium silicate, and feldspars, resulting in greater total alkalinity concentration in inland waters. This phenomenon will result in inland waters having slightly greater alkalinity concentration (and buffering capacity), higher pH when at equilibrium with atmospheric CO2, and more available carbon for photosynthesis. However, the changes in water quality will be small. Fluctuations in CO2 concentration resulting from CO2 use in photosynthesis by aquatic plants and release of CO2 by respiration, acidity resulting from nitrification of ammonia nitrogen from feeding waste and fertilizer, and application of liming materials to ponds will continue to be the dominant factors affecting pH and alkalinity in waters of inland aquaculture systems.  相似文献

The health of the pond environment in shrimp farming is important for sustainable and profitable aquaculture, in which sediment–water interface is the most important influencing area. With this objective, the key parameters of water and sediment at the interface was studied in shrimp ponds with varying salinities and compared with the surface water and soil to understand the variations and the underlying causes. Total ammonia nitrogen and total alkalinity were higher in water at the interface as compared to surface water, whereas pH, nitrite, oxide forms of nitrogen (NO3), phosphorus (PO4) and oxidizing bacteria were observed to be lower. There was no significant difference with respect to macrominerals such as sodium, potassium, calcium and magnesium between water at the interface and surface. These changes are profoundly influenced by the uppermost 1.0‐cm thick sediment layer, where the maximum transition of nutrients takes place with the water column. The outcome of the study highlights the effectiveness of water sampling for metabolites at the interface, which reflects at an early stage any potential deterioration of pond environment, which will help the farmer to initiate timely mitigation measures.  相似文献

Abstract

Copper sulfate is an algicide that is commonly used for phytoplankton and filamentous algae control and has been used as a therapeutant in aquaculture. The objectives of this study were to determine the acute toxicity of copper sulfate and the safe level for use in freshwater prawn, Macrobrachium rosenbergii, production ponds in a high calcium and alkalinity environment. Six concentrations of copper sulfate (0, 0.2, 0.4, 0.6, 0.8, 1.0 mg/L) were tested in 8-L glass aquaria for 48 hours with three replicate aquaria per treatment. Concentrations of calcium hardness and alkalinity were set at 100 mg/L using calcium chloride and sodium bicarbonate, respectively. After 48 hours, survival of the control treatment (0% CuSO4) averaged 97%, which was significantly higher (P< 0.05) than that of all other treatments. The survival in the 0.2 mg/L and 0.4 mg/L (70% and 73%, respectively) concentrations of CuSO4 were significantly greater (P< 0.05) than higher dose treatments; but were not significantly different from each other (P> 0.05). Treatments containing 0.6, 0.8, and 1.0-mg/L copper sulfate demonstrated a dramatic decrease in prawn survival, which averaged 30, 7, and 0%, respectively. Regression analysis of the data predicted 48-hour LC50 for copper sulfate tobe0.46 mg/L. Since recommended application rates for use of copper sulfate as an algicide are 1.0 mg/L or more for water with alkalinities of 100 mg/L, copper sulfate treatments are not recommended for prawn production ponds.  相似文献

Growth performance data on Penaeus semisulcatus under semi-intensive pond culture conditions were collected in Israel between 1985 and 1987. In 1985, shrimp growth, from PL to 21.5 g, was accomplished in separate nursery and grow-out phases. Pond production during the grow-out phase was 3,000 and 3,943 kg/ha, and mean weight was 21.5 g. Shipments to Europe revealed a need to produce larger shrimp to maximize revenues. Any increase in individual shrimp weight at harvest would require new management practices. Juvenile shrimp (3.4 to 6.3 g) were held during the winter of 1986 in open ponds and restocked in grow-out ponds in the spring of 1987. Shrimp survival during overwintering was 12 and 15%. A maximum mean shrimp weight of 25.6 g and a maximum pond production of 7,451 kg/ha were obtained in 1987 using this strategy. It is possible that comparable pond production results and shrimp weight, but with higher overall shrimp survival, could be obtained by headstarting shrimp in greenhouses. Two major problems that need to be solved before commercial shrimp culture can succeed in Israel are the formulation of a locally produced feed and the out-of-season induced maturation and spawning of P. scmisulcarus .  相似文献

Water quality and phytoplankton communities were studied in 20 intensive shrimp culture ponds and in the inlet and drainage canals at Kung Krabaen Bay, Eastern Thailand during the first shrimp crop of 1992. The grow-out ponds were categorized into two groups: low stocking density (<60 PL/m2) and high stocking density (>60 PL/m2). The results showed that there were no significant differences in water quality between the two stocking density groups. Phytoplankton collected using a 60-μm mesh net consisted of 79 genera with concentrations ranging from 1,822 to 72,527 cells/L from the first month up to the time of shrimp harvesting. Water quality deteriorated in high and low stocking density shrimp ponds, which had an influence on abundance and diversity of net phytoplankton communities. Biochemical oxygen demand and ammonia-nitrogen were most closely related to abundance of net phytoplankton communities during the shrimp grow-out period. Salinity, temperature, and dissolved oxygen appeared to play an important role in phytoplankton community variation in inlet and drainage canals. Phytoplankton community structure in drainage canals showed more variation than in ponds. The management implications of the results and recommendations for further studies are also considered.  相似文献

We examined the potential for producing the large numbers of sandfish (Holothuria scabra) needed for restocking programmes by co-culturing juveniles with the shrimp Litopenaeus stylirostris in earthen ponds. Our experiments in hapas within shrimp ponds were designed to detect any deleterious effects of sandfish on shrimp, and vice versa. These experiments showed that a high stocking density of juvenile sandfish had no significant effects on growth and survival of shrimp. However, survival and growth of sandfish reared with shrimp for 3 weeks were significantly lower than for sandfish reared alone. Increased stocking density of shrimp also had a significant negative effect on survival and/or growth of sandfish. A grow-out trial of juvenile sandfish in 0.2-ha earthen ponds stocked with 20 shrimp post-larvae m− 2, and densities of sandfish between 0.8 and 1.6 individuals m− 2, confirmed that co-culture is not viable. All sandfish reared in co-culture were dead or moribund after a month. However, sandfish stocked alone into 0.2-ha earthen ponds survived well and grew to mean weights of ∼ 400 g within 12 months without addition of food. The grow-out trial demonstrated that there is potential for profitable pond farming of sandfish in monoculture. Further research is now needed to identify the optimal size of juveniles, stocking densities and pond management regimes.  相似文献

The productivity, community composition and dynamics of phytoplankton were examined in commercial shrimp [= penaeid prawn] ponds in eastern Australia. Nutrient and light regimes were examined concurrently. Analysis of chlorophyll a, algal accessory pigments and bacterial numbers over a 6-month period showed considerable daily variation. Bacterial numbers and nutrient concentrations were not significantly different between the top and bottom of the water column nor between sites within a pond, but there were significant depth differences in chlorophyll a, and the diatom and cyanobacteria indicator pigments, fucoxanthin and zeaxanthin, and site differences in alkalinity and fucoxanthin. Statistical analysis of spatial and temporal variation was used to develop sampling strategies. Our results showed that to accurately reflect changes in phytoplankton throughout the grow-out season, chlorophyll a and the accessory pigments must be sampled for longer than five consecutive days. A suggested alternative to manual sampling is the use of automated loggers. Factors that might be limiting phytoplankton growth and affecting community composition were determined. Light appears to be limiting phytoplankton growth and it is suggested that a shallower pond depth and/or higher turbidity would increase algal productivity. Changes in nitrogen-to-phosphorus ratios and ammonia concentrations coincided with changes in phytoplankton community structure.  相似文献

Wastes contained in the microscreen backwash discharged from intensive recirculating aquaculture systems were removed and dewatered in simple geotextile bag filters. Three chemical coagulation aids (aluminum sulfate (alum), ferric chloride, and calcium hydroxide (hydrated lime)), were tested in combination with a long-chain polymer flocculation aid (HyChem CE 1950 at 25 mg/L) to determine the most cost effective and efficient treatment combination. Three different coagulants were tested to determine if coagulant choice impacts nutrient and carbonaceous biochemical oxygen demand (cBOD5) leaching into the filtrate and the final composition of the bag-captured biosolids at the end of each period. If nutrient leaching into the bag filtrate could be minimized through coagulant selection, then geotextile bags could provide a convenient and effective method to dewater waste biosolids and provide them in a form that fish farmers could readily transport, store, or send for disposal.Results from replicate geotextile bag filter tests indicate that when alum, ferric chloride, and hydrated lime (plus a polymer) were amended to a backwash flow, both suspended solids capture and solids thickening were improved; i.e., total suspended solids removal rates of 95.8, 95.1, and 96.0%, respectively, were achieved along with final dewatered filter cake percent solids concentrations of 22.1, 19.3, and 20.9%, respectively. Alum, ferric chloride, and hydrated lime (plus a polymer) amended geotextile bags were not as effective in chemical oxygen demand (COD) and cBOD5 removal, resulting in removal rates of 69.6, 67.2, and 35.3%, respectively, and 56.6, 9.3, and ?47.4%, respectively. Further, the use of lime as a coagulant resulted in filtrate COD and cBOD5 concentrations that exceeded inlet concentrations. Total nitrogen removal applying alum, ferric chloride, and lime were also less than effective, resulting in removal rates of 39.1, 46.7, and ?8.9%, respectively. Filtrate total nitrogen concentrations were primarily in the inorganic form (total ammonia nitrogen) suggesting mineralization of ammonia as solids were stored within geotextile bags under anaerobic conditions. Alum, ferric chloride, and lime amended bags were moderately efficient at total phosphorus removal, resulting in removal rates of 67.6, 47.0, and 77.3%, respectively. Alum was identified as the most cost effective chemical for coagulation, but hydrated lime was the most effective at dissolved phosphorus precipitation and removal.  相似文献

To investigate the feasibility of using micro‐organisms for ammonia‐N removal, six strains were isolated from Chinese white shrimp, Fenneropenaeus chinensis, seawater culture ponds in Dongying (Shandong, China). Of these, strain DY‐01, which exhibited the highest capacity to degrade ammonia‐N, removed 61.7% of the total ammonia‐N (50 mg/L) in 8 hr. An investigation of the factors affecting the removal efficiency indicated the optimum conditions to be 30°C, pH 8.0, and a salinity level of 30 g/L; 16S rDNA gene sequencing and biochemical analysis identified strain DY‐01 as Cobetia amphilecti, which has not previously been reported to degrade ammonia‐N. This strain also boosted the growth of Pacific white shrimp, Litopenaeus vannamei (p < .05), at a concentration of 107 CFU/mL, with no harmful effects on the shrimp's immune system. This study has thus identified a novel aerobic nitrifying bacterium that is potentially an excellent candidate for improving the water quality in mariculture ponds.  相似文献

The initial stages of rearing marine shrimp using biofloc technology (BFT) involve the biofloc formation process. At the same time, there is an increase in the levels of total suspended solids and a decrease in alkalinity and pH. This reduction of alkalinity and pH occurs due to the consumption of inorganic carbon by the autotrophic bacteria present in the bioflocs and biofilms. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of different alkalinities on water quality and the zootechnical performance of the marine shrimp Litopenaeus vannamei in a BFT system. The experiment consisted of four treatments, with three replicates each: 75, 150, 225 and 300 mg CaCO3/L. To maintain the alkalinity at the established level, sodium bicarbonate was applied. For the experiments, twelve experimental units (area = 0.20 m2) with an effective volume of 50 L were stocked with 30 juvenile L. vannamei (0.20 ± 0.07 g), to achieve a stocking density of 150 shrimps/m2 and were maintained for an experimental period of 49 days. The 75 treatment presented the highest levels of ammonia and nitrite throughout the study, compared to the 150 and 300 treatments. The results showed that higher alkalinity favors biofloc formation and the establishment of nitrifying bacteria.  相似文献

2002年4~7月,对湛江港沙湾对虾养殖场虾池的水质及对虾的生长情况进行连续监测,应用单项指标评价、富营养化评价等方法,对该养殖场的水质状况进行了评价和营养分级。结果表明,该养殖场的水质呈高N低P状态,水温、DO和大部分池的pH、DRP符合第二类海水水质标准,DIN超标,超标率达70%,该养殖场目前处于P中等限制潜在性富营养水平阶段。  相似文献

Many reports have shown that the composition of the bacterioplankton community can serve as a biological indicator to evaluate the occurrence of shrimp diseases. However, the distribution, diversity, and function of planktonic actinobacteria in shrimp ponds are still poorly understood. In this study, a prototype of a 16S rRNA gene-based taxonomic microarray was developed and evaluated for monitoring of planktonic actinobacteria in shrimp ponds. The prototype microarray is composed of 30 probes that target ten dominant families of planktonic actinobacteria found in shrimp ponds. The specificity of the actinobacterial microarray was validated by a set of control hybridizations with 16S rRNA genes clones. The prototype microarray was subsequently tested with two seawater samples from ponds with diseased shrimp populations (PDS) and ponds with healthy shrimp populations (PHS). The actinobacteria hybridization profiles revealed a lower abundance of Microbacteriaceae and a higher abundance of Mycobacteriaceae in PDS than in PHS. The changes in planktonic actinobacterial communities were validated by pyrosequencing data. These results support the utility of the microarray for monitoring planktonic actinobacteria in shrimp ponds and aquaculture environments.

This work aimed at assessing the role of salinity in the dissolution rates of CaCO3, discussing its implications for aquaculture liming. A simplified formula of artificial seawater without HCO3? was initially prepared. Four batches of 10 L of diluted artificial seawater (salinity = 3.3 g/L) without HCO3? were prepared. Sixteen Erlenmeyer flasks were filled up with 2 L each of the diluted artificial seawater without HCO3?. Besides, 16 other 2,000‐ml Erlenmeyer flasks were filled up with 2 L of distilled water (freshwater). The experimental treatments were formed by applying increasing amounts of analytical‐grade sodium bicarbonate (NaHCO3) upon brackish water and freshwater. Accordingly, four initial levels of total alkalinity (TA) have been set up as follows: 4–6, 33–35, 62–63 and 120–122 mg/L. Next, approximately one gram of analytical‐grade calcium carbonate (CaCO3) was applied onto each flask. Water's pH, TA and calcium concentration were determined weekly over a 7‐week period, by appropriate methods. For a same initial TA, TA increase over time after CaCO3 application was lower in the brackish water flasks than in the freshwater ones. This was especially clear for moderate (63 mg/L) and high (120 mg/L) alkalinities. It was concluded that brackish and saline waters used for aquaculture would only benefit from CaCO3 liming if their alkalinities were lower than 60–80 mg/L.  相似文献

The bioflocs technology proved to be a sustainable technique used in zero‐water exchange shrimp culture systems. However, the pH and alkalinity may decrease due to the biofloc formation process and Nitrification. A 48‐day experiment was performed to investigate the effects of different pH (7.1–7.6; 7.6–8.1) conditions on water quality, the growth and the health status of shrimp in biofloc technology (BFT) through using sodium bicarbonate to adjust pH respectively. Two pH treatments and one control were compared: T0 — control, T1 — pH 7.6 — NaHCO3, T2 — pH 8.1 — NaHCO3, each treatment consisted of three replicate tanks (90 L water volume) and each replicate stocked with 30 shrimp (equivalent to 333 shrimp m?3). Significant physical, chemical and biological differences (P < 0.05) were detected among treatments. At the end of the experiment, water quality, the growth and the immune response of shrimp in control were significantly lower (P < 0.05) than the other treatments. Moreover, the T2 treatment had a better performance in these three aspects. The results indicated that it was necessary to adjust the pH and alkalinity in the BFT, and a higher pH as well as alkalinity for shrimp growth and the stability of the BFT were more favourable.  相似文献
