Thirty first year grazing calves were allocated to two groups of 15 calves each on the basis of bodyweight and were administered albendazole boli or placebo boli, respectively, 30 days after turnout. The albendazole bolus prevented the nematode egg output almost completely for about 4 months, whereas the controls had mean egg counts of up to 206. Pepsinogen concentrations were significantly higher in the control group and reached mean values of 3055 mU tyrosine compared to less than 1000 mU tyrosine in the albendazole treated group after bolus administration. Pasture contamination with trichostrongylid larvae was markedly lower on pastures of the albendazole group than on the controls. Mean weight gains were significantly higher in the albendazole group than in the controls with a difference of 10.7 kg per animal at the end of the season.

The efficacy of the morantel sustained release bolus (MSRB) in reducing gastrointestinal parasitism in first season grazing calves was evaluated during the summer--autumn grazing seasons of 1982 and 1983 in western Oregon. Each of 38 calves (1982) and 40 calves (1983) were randomly assigned to either control or treatment groups which were given MSRB on the day of turnout onto pasture. Mean worm burdens from tracer calves grazed with treated animals in 1982 and 1983 showed overall reductions of 86.4% (P greater than 0.05) and 84.3% (P less than 0.01), respectively, compared to tracers grazed with controls. Ostertagia ostertagi, Cooperia oncophora and Nematodirus helvetianus were the primary nematodes collected at necropsy. Twelve full-season 1982 tracer animals (6 treated and 6 control) indicated an 88.1% (P less than 0.05) overall reduction in mean worm burdens. Mean fecal worm egg per gram (EPG) counts of treated animals reflected a reduction of 69% (P less than 0.05) in 1982 and 90% (P less than 0.05) in 1983. Autumn inhibition of O. ostertagi was observed. In the 1982 trial the control animals showed a slight mean weight gain advantage over the treated group from Day 84 until Day 160 (trial termination) when the mean difference was 7.9 kg. The final mean weight gain advantage of treated animals in 1983 was 13.5 kg (P less than 0.05). These trials demonstrated that the MSRB was an effective anthelmintic for reducing gastrointestinal parasitism in grazing calves and for decreasing pasture larval contamination.

A study was undertaken to ascertain the prophylactic effect on gastrointestinal helminthiasis of (1) a single ivermectin treatment of calves 3 weeks after a late turnout on mown pasture and (2) two ivermectin treatments of calves 3 and 8 weeks after an early turnout. The single ivermectin treatment after a late turnout on mown pasture appeared to be an effective control measure for infections of Cooperia and, in particular, Ostertagia. The two treatments after an early turnout were also effective, although less so than the single treatment combined with the late turnout on mown pasture. Ivermectin treatment had no effect on the faecal egg output or the pasture larval counts of Nematodirus helvetianus. The proportion of inhibited early fourth stage larvae of Ostertagia was much higher in the control group than in either of the experimental groups.

The main purpose of this experiment was to study the importance of time of turnout on the epidemiology and impact of ostertagiasis in calves pastured for the first time. When time of turnout onto permanent pasture was postponed from mid-May to mid-June, fewer overwintered larvae were picked up and re-contamination of pastures was markedly diminished. Consequently, the acquisition of loss-producing parasite burdens in the late part of the season was significantly reduced. Late turnout as a control strategy is discussed in relation to other preventive measures.

In an experiment carried out in 1981 and 1982, the effect of the use of a morantel sustained release bolus (Paratect bolus) on the weight gain and a number of parasitological parameters of cattle was studied. In the first year 42 calves were divided into 3 equal groups, one group was kept outside and treated with a bolus (B), the second group was kept outside and was not treated (C), while the third group remained indoors (I). Groups B and C were grazed separately on contaminated pasture. During the first months Group B had a negligible egg output. The egg output in the controls was much higher and in mid-August they had to be treated for parasitic gastroenteritis. At the end of the grazing season the advantage in weight gain of Group B was 20 kg compared with the controls. During the housing period the growth in the 3 groups was not significantly different. At the start of the second grazing season half the animals of Groups B, C and I received a bolus (Groups BB, CB and IB). The other half remained untreated (BC, CC and IC). The animals treated with a bolus in 1982 gained significantly more weight (64 g/day) than untreated animals. Heifers turned out for the first time (IB and IC) showed much less weight gain than heifers in their second grazing season. The heifers which had previously grazed in 1981 had a very low egg output compared with Groups IB and IC, although the level of egg output of the latter was also not very high (max, almost 40 (eggs per gram (EPG)). In faecal cultures of heifers of Group BC, CB and CC, no Cooperia oncophora-larvae were seen from May onwards, indicating a strong immunity against this species. In Group BB very low numbers of C. oncophora-larvae were observed. In Groups IB and IC, C. oncophora was present during the whole season. At the end of the first season the level of herbage infestation on the control pastures was much higher. In 1982 only slight differences in level of infestation between the pastures were observed. At the start of the season in 1982 serum pepsinogen levels were much higher in the groups which grazed in 1981, compared with the indoor-fed groups. Groups BC and CC had significantly higher levels than Groups BB and CB and all 4 groups always had higher levels than Groups IB and IC.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 400 WORDS)

The effect of an ivermectin sustained-release bolus (I-SRB) on the epidemiology of nematode parasites and on calf productivity was evaluated in a field trial under Northwestern European conditions. Twenty parasite-naive female Friesian calves (principals) aged 5–9 months were used together with six male Friesian tracer calves. Principal calves were allocated by restricted randomization on day 0 body weight to either an untreated control group or a group given one I-SRB, designed to deliver 12 mg ivermectin per day for 135 days, orally on day 0. Each group was grazed on adjacent paddocks, naturally contaminated with parasitic nematode larvae, from 13 May 1991 (day 0) until housing on 30 September (day 140). Body weights of principal calves were recorded and individual blood and faecal samples taken at regular intervals throughout the trial. Pasture nematode contamination was monitored by larval counts on herbage and by worm counts of tracer calves grazed on each paddock from day 126 to day 140. Nematode contamination levels on the control paddock did not rise until the end of the grazing season, as a result of a mid-summer drought period. The period of exposure to a high larval challenge was too short to provoke body weight losses and clinical parasitic gastroenteritis in control calves. Use of the I-SRB resulted in zero faecal egg counts of trichostrongyles during the whole pasture season, thereby preventing a build-up of parasitic gastrointestinal nematodes on pasture. During the second grazing season no signs of parasitic gastroenteritis were detected in any animal, but an outbreak of parasitic bronchitis (PB) was observed in both experimental groups, indicating that PB can occur in older cattle regardless of the control measures taken to prevent clinical parasitism during the first grazing season.

A study was carried out to evaluate the effects of strategic early-season treatments with eprinomectin on first-season grazing calves exposed to strongyle infections on a naturally contaminated pasture. Two groups of first grazing season (FGS) calves were turned out in mid-May on two plots that were similar with respect to size and herbage infectivity. They grazed separately until housing at the end of October. One of these groups was given eprinomectin pour-on at turnout and 8 weeks later, while the other group served as untreated controls. The results showed that the treatments reduced gastrointestinal strongyle infections throughout the season as evidenced by lower faecal egg counts and serum pepsinogen levels compared with the controls. Furthermore, the results of herbage larval counts and postmortem worm counts in tracer animals demonstrated that the treatment had reduced herbage infectivity on the 'treated' plot. Finally, the chemoprophylactically treated calves had a better weight gain over the duration of the study than the untreated controls.

Two groups of second grazing season cattle, which had been treated with an ivermectin-sustained-release bolus (ISRB) in their first grazing season, were monitored during consecutive years (1995 and 1996) on the same second grazing season pasture. In the preceding year (1994), this pasture had been grazed by yearlings that had not received chemoprophylaxis in their first grazing season. The objectives of the study were, firstly, to investigate whether the chemoprophylactic-treated yearlings were less resistant to gastrointestinal nematodes upon subsequent exposure, and hence excreted more strongyle eggs compared to the control yearlings; secondly, whether an increased susceptibility of the previously treated animals resulted in a yearly increase of the pasture infestation on the second grazing season pasture; and finally, whether this affected the second year weight gain of the animals. In 1996, the yearlings that had been chemoprophylactic-treated in 1995 excreted higher numbers of nematode eggs, compared to the previously ‘untreated' yearlings. In addition, the proportion of Cooperia larvae was markedly higher in the faecal cultures from the chemoprophylactic treated-animals, suggesting a negative effect of preventive treatment with an ISRB on the acquired resistance of the animals. However, there was no evidence that the slightly higher egg output in the previously treated yearlings had an effect on the larval contamination of the second grazing season pasture. A significant yearly decrease in the second season average daily weight gains was observed, but it could not be inferred from the results of the parasitological parameters that the differences in second year growth were caused by different levels of resilience between chemoprophylactic-treated and -untreated animals. As the study covered three consecutive second grazing seasons, an effect of differences between years (e.g. in weather conditions or grass growth) on the results cannot be excluded.

The efficacy of the morantel sustained-release bolus (MSRB) in controlling gastrointestinal parasites in first-season grazing calves was evaluated on a dairy cattle farm in Belgium. The calves grazed a pasture which had been used by bolus-treated animals in the three previous years. The effect of bolus administration was determined with respect to live weight gain, faecal egg shedding, herbage larval counts, serum pepsinogen levels and ELISA antibody titres. In spite of an incomplete reduction of faecal egg shedding during the first months of the grazing season, bolus administration resulted in the prevention of parasitic gastro-enteritis in the calves. A weight gain advantage of 35,2 kg of the bolus-treated animals over the controls was noted already at two months after turnout. This weight gain advantage was maintained until housing. The usefulness of serum pepsinogen values and ELISA antibody titres as parameters in prevention experiments is stressed. Both serological parameters gave more information concerning infection level than did the faecal egg output and the herbage larval counts.

Summary The efficacy of morantel sustained release trilaminate (MSRT) bolus against gastrointestinal nematodes was evaluated under field conditions over a 10-month period. Twenty weaner calves were randomly divided into 2 groups of 10 calves each and grazed from March to December on adjacent, similarly contaminated paddocks. Group 1 calves (T-1) served as untreated controls while group 2 calves (T-2) were dosed at turnout with MSRT bolus designed to release morantel tartrate continuously for 90 days. The efficacy of MSRT was assessed by comparison of parasitological data (faecal worm egg counts, herbage larval counts, worm counts from tracer calves and set-stocked trial calves, determination of haematological parameters and pepsinogen levels), weight gains and clinical status of the animals. Faecal egg counts from the treated group (T-2) were reduced by 100% (P < 0·001) following treatment and remained significantly (P < 0·05) lower than counts from T-1 calves up to trial termination. The use of MSRT bolus resulted in a reduction of 92% (P < 0·001) in the number of gastrointestinal nematodes in set-stocked calves at the end of the study and a 55 to 85·7% reduction in herbage larval infectivity as reflected in lowered parasite burdens in tracer calves. At the trial termination, the control calves had gained on average (± s.d.) 59·4 ± 4·8 kg (200·0 ± 7·4 g day−1) and the treated ones on an average 128·6 ± 10·5 kg (530·0 ± 13·1 g day−1).
Eficacia De La Utilizacion De Bolos Trilaminados De Morantel Frente A Nematodos Gastrointestinales En Vacuno De Leche En Pastoreo En Kenya

Efficacite Du Morantel Por Voie Orale Contre Des Nematodes Gastro-Intestinaux Chez Des Veaux Laitiers Au Kenya

During the first grazing season a group of calves treated with an oxfendazole pulse release bolus achieved a mean (+/- sem) weight gain of 140.7 (+/- 6.7) kg compared with 106.5 (+/- 5.7) kg by a group treated once with ivermectin mid-season, and 116.9 (+/- 6.9) kg by a group which received no treatment. This economic advantage was maintained during the period of winter housing. By the end of the second grazing season, during which the animals received no anthelmintic medication, they weighed on average 20 kg more than the wholly untreated group, a difference which was not statistically significant. No signs of clinical disease were observed in either the animals dosed with a pulse release bolus or the undosed control animals during the two year trial period. The treatment with the oxfendazole pulse release bolus greatly reduced the degree of pasture contamination in the first year but in the second year those animals that had been treated in the first year developed higher worm egg counts (P less than 0.001) and thus augmented the levels of pasture contamination compared with the untreated control animals. Nematodirus battus and N filicollis both produced low grade but fertile infestations in the calves.

A 168-day study was conducted to evaluate the efficacy of morantel tartrate sustained-release bolus (MSRB) in controlling gastrointestinal parasitism in weaned calves during autumn-winter grazing in the temperature climate of southern United States. Sixty-two weanling Angus heifers were used to assess treatment differences. Six sentinel heifers were necropsied to assess pretrial gastrointestinal worm counts. The remaining 56 heifers were assigned to 4 groups of 14 heifers each and were placed on four 4.86-hectare dormant Bermuda grass pastures (1 group/pasture) that had been no-till interseeded with cereal rye in early October. Heifers in 2 groups were given 1 MSRB in early November; the other 2 groups served as nonmedicated controls. Three heifers (principals) from each of the 4 groups were necropsied on posttreatment days 57, 112, and 168 (end of study) for total worm recovery. Eight 5-month-old tracer steers, raised worm-free from birth, grazed the 4 pastures (2/pastures) for the first 21 days of the study and then were kept in drylot for 21 days before being necropsied. Level of larval contamination of pastures grazed by control and MSRB-treated heifers were comparable, because the mean number of nematodes recovered from tracer steers grazing the control and MSRB pastures were 47,449 and 53,835, respectively. At 28 days after treatment, MSRB-treated heifers had lower (P less than 0.05) mean egg counts/g of feces than did control heifers (280 vs 13).(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)

An experiment was conducted in calves to investigate the efficacy of a morantel sustained release trilaminate bolus (MSRT) to control gastrointestinal parasitism and to assess the development of immunity during the use of MSRT. Two groups (M and U) of four calves each were infected three times a week with a mixed Ostertagia ostertagi and Cooperia oncophora infection for 12 weeks. Calves of Group M received an MSRT at the start of the experiment. Twenty weeks after the start of the experiment, all animals, including a previously uninfected control group (C), received a challenge with 100,000 Ostertagia and 100,000 Cooperia. After a further 4 weeks all calves were necropsied for worm counts. During the trial calves were weighed and faecal egg counts, larval differentiation and pepsinogen concentrations were determined. The results demonstrated the high level of efficacy of the MSRT in reducing the faecal egg output and preventing parasitic gastroenteritis under conditions of a continuous high rate of infection. Efficacy of treatment was higher for Cooperia than for Ostertagia. Post-mortem worm counts suggested a partially impaired immunity build-up in Group M, at least for Cooperia.

Twelve Holstein calves were used to determine the prophylactic efficacy of ivermectin against challenge exposure with gastrointestinal and pulmonary nematodes. Two groups of 6 calves (mean body weight, 205 kg) each were formed by restricted randomization according to body weight. Group-1 calves served as nonmedicated controls. Each calf of group 2 was orally given one prototype sustained-release bolus designed to deliver ivermectin at a continuous daily dose of 8 mg. Third-stage nematode infective larvae were given to the calves on posttreatment days 28 and 42. The calves were euthanatized 77 or 78 days after treatment. Ivermectin was 100% effective (P less than 0.05) in preventing the establishment of infection by Haemonchus placei, Ostertagia ostertagi, Cooperia spp (C punctata, C oncophora, C surnabada), Nematodirus helvetianus, Oesophagostomum radiatum, and Dictyocaulus viviparus and was greater than 99% effective against Trichostrongylus axei. Incidental infection by Trichuris spp was reduced by 94% (P = 0.08).

The prevalence of bovine respiratory disease (BRD) was assessed in a population of 10,142 beef calves representing nine pure breeds and three composite populations born in 1983 through 1988. Twenty-four percent of the calves experienced at least one episode of respiratory disease during the 1st yr of life; frequencies over the six birth years ranged from 14 to 38%. The timing of respiratory disease outbreaks differed among birth years; in 4 of the 6 yr, more illness occurred in the pasture before weaning than in the feedlot after weaning. Frequencies of BRD during preweaning and postweaning periods were analyzed separately. Pure breeds and composite populations within a single preweaning location differed in frequency of illness during the preweaning period. However, not all possible breed comparisons could be made because preweaning location differed for the breed groups, and preweaning location had a significant effect on the frequency of respiratory disease in the preweaning period. The preweaning location effect did not carry through to the postweaning period. Pinzgauers had the highest BRD frequency within the feedlot (24.6%). The heritability estimates of BRD during the preweaning and postweaning periods did not differ significantly from 0 (.10 +/- .02 and .06 +/- .07, respectively). Although it is likely that response to selection for resistance to BRD would be slight using the animal's history of BRD as the selection criterion, including information on relatives or additional immune traits may improve the accuracy of an estimated breeding value for BRD resistance.
