The purpose of this study is to compare feeding and other behavior and nutrient digestibility of tropical grade Brahman (body weight (BW) = 231 kg ± 12.4; n = 3) and crossbred water buffalo (BW = 300 kg ± 13.9; n = 3). This experiment on digestibility and measures of muscles of mastication utilized one‐way, and animal behavior two‐way, analysis of variance, respectively. Two video camcorders were installed in each pair of buffalo and Brahman for 24 h period programmed on the 107th, 109th and 111th days of the digestion trials. Frequency and duration of feeding, meal intake, rumination, bolus, chews, drinking, defecating, standing and lying were recorded daily. Muscle diameter of Digastricus, Masseter and Pterygoid and different regions of the tongue were sampled and measured under light microscope using a standard micrometer. Buffalo obtained significantly higher intake of dry matter, roughage, crude protein, total digestible nutrient and metabolized energy than Brahman. This was supported by longer meal duration (P ≤ 0.05), and shorter meal breaks (P ≤ 0.05) of buffalo than Brahman. The diameter of the muscles for mastication was bigger (P ≤ 0.05) in buffalo than in Brahman, which is indicative of stronger chewing ability. Briefly, lesser and slower chewing action; higher intake of roughage and crude protein; and longer resting behavior of crossbred water buffalo than Brahman are all indicative of better digestive and metabolic performance of the buffalo under high roughage feeding conditions.  相似文献

The effects of heat exposure and type of diet on the insulin secretory response to glucose and glucose disposal in response to insulin action in female sheep were investigated employing hyperglycemic and euglycemic clamp techniques. Animals were divided into concentrate and roughage diet groups, and were maintained at the same intake levels of metabolizable energy and crude protein in both diets. Each diet group was subjected to either thermoneutral (20°C, 70% RH) or hot (30°C, 70% RH) environment, followed by glucose clamp experiments.

Heat-exposed sheep showed significant increases in respiration rates (P<.001) and rectal temperature (P<.05). Plasma glucose concentrations in the basal conditions were lower (P<.01) in the hot environment than in the thermoneutral environment, but there was no significant difference in basal levels of plasma insulin between the environmental treatments. In the hyperglycemic clamp experiment, mean plasma insulin increments increased (P<.05) during the heat exposure period across diet treatments. The ratio of mean plasma insulin increment to glucose infusion rate tended to be higher (P<.07) in the hot environment than in the thermoneutral environment, but diet treatment did not affect the ratio of mean plasma insulin increment to glucose infusion rate. The euglycemic clamp technique showed that glucose infusion rates remained unchanged among treatments. Insulin secretion response to glucose could be stimulated in the hot environment.  相似文献

Twenty-four intact male Bonga lambs were studied in a 100-day experiment to evaluate the effect of feeding tannin rich leaves of Albizia gummifera (AG) on nutrient utilization, growth performance, and carcass composition. The dietary treatments consisted of hay alone (T1, control), AG at 30 % of control diet + T1 (T2), and T2 + polyethylene glycol 6000 (PEG) (T3, 40 mg PEG, 1 kg AG/head on a dry mass (DM) basis. The lambs were individually fed at 50 g DM/kg live weight. In the last 10 days of the experiment, all animals from each treatment were harnessed with feces collection bags. At the end of the experiment, lambs were slaughtered after overnight fasting for measurements of carcass characteristics. Crude protein, neutral detergent fiber, and condensed tannin contents of AG were 300, 586, and 108 g/kg DM, respectively. Ten 394-kg, ruminally fistulated Hereford steers were used in a replicated 5 x 5 Latin square design to evaluate the effects of source and level of dietary NDF on chewing activities during eating and rumination. Diets contained 62 to 64% TDN and included 1) 80% pelleted concentrate (control; contained ground grains, fibrous byproducts, molasses, and protein, vitamin, and mineral supplements; 36% NDF, 16% CP) and 20% long timothy hay (67% NDF, 8% CP), 2) 80% control concentrate and 20% alfalfa cubes (56% NDF, 15% CP), 3) 90% control concentrate and 10% alfalfa cubes, 4) a completely pelleted diet using corn cobs as the primary NDF source (40% NDF, 17% CP), and 5) 80% textured (coarse instead of ground grains; 42% NDF, 15% CP) concentrate and 20% hay. Diets were formulated to be similar in NDF content, and dietary protein satisfied NRC recommendations. Chewing during eating did not differ (P greater than .10) between diets containing supplemental roughage but decreased (P less than .001) with the corn cob diet. Rumination chewing decreased (P less than .001) with the corn cob and cube diets. The number of chews per day during eating corrected for NDF intake/BW.75 decreased (P less than .05) in the corn cob diet. Rumination periods and duration increased and latency before rumination decreased in hay diets. Steers fed the corn cob diet tended to be more (P less than .10) consistent in time spent eating across 4-h intervals than steers fed the traditional diet. One hundred and forty crossbred pigs (Pig Improvement Canada Ltd, Acme Alberta), weighing an average of 21.5 + 3.6 kg, were assigned on the basis of sex, weight and litter to one of five dietary treatments. The control diet was barley-based, while in the remaining four treatments, the grain component consisted of either normal or low viscosity rye fed with or without pentosanase. Digestibility coefficients for dry matter, crude protein and gross energy were significantly (P = 0.0001) higher for the rye-based diets than the barley based diet. There were no differences in digestibility coefficients between normal and low viscosity diets or between diets supplemented or unsupplemented with pentosanase. Over the entire experimental period (21.5 to 100.7 kg), pigs fed the normal viscosity rye gained better (P = 0.001) and had a higher daily intake (P = 0.001) than pigs fed the low viscosity rye. Pigs fed the low viscosity rye tended to gain slower than pigs fed barley and with lower intake while pigs fed the normal viscosity rye had similar gains and intake to the pigs fed barley. Enzyme supplementation failed to improve pig performance. Males had higher gains and intake than females (P < 0.05). Enzyme supplementation, rye viscosity or choice of cereal grain had no effect on any of the carcass traits measured. In conclusion, the results of the present experiment indicate that rye is a good alternative to barley for use in growing-finishing rations and becomes increasing attractive as the age of the pig increases. Breeding efforts directed towards reducing the viscosity of rye are unlikely to be successful in improving the nutritive value of rye for swine.  相似文献

Naturally fauna-free crossbred rams approximately 5 mo old, 49.3 +/- 1.88 kg live weight, were allotted to four groups. Two groups remained fauna-free, whereas the other two groups were faunated. A diet based on corn silage-soybean meal containing either a low or a high Cu concentration (7 or 15 micrograms/g dry matter) was fed ad libitum to the two groups for 197 d. The rams were killed at the end of the experiment and livers and ruminal contents were analyzed for Cu. Faunated sheep grew faster (P less than .01) and as a group consumed 1.53 kg diet dry matter daily compared with 1.34 for the fauna-free sheep. Faunated sheep had lower final liver Cu concentrations (P less than .01), total liver Cu per unit of Cu intake and ruminal Cu solubilities (P less than .01) when fed both low and high Cu diets. The relative hepatic Cu uptake was higher by rams fed the low Cu than by those fed the high Cu diet. The results are interpreted to show that faunation decreased the availability of Cu in sheep fed a corn silage-soybean meal diet. The magnitude of the effect was independent of the Cu concentration in the diet.  相似文献

Twenty-five yearling wethers, weighing 40 to 45 kg were used in a trial designed to compare the effect of the route of administration of vitamin E upon plasma and tissue vitamin E status. Five control sheep without vitamin E administration were killed at the beginning of the trial. Of the remaining 20 sheep, 10 were given DL-alpha-tocopheryl acetate intraruminally and 10 by intraperitoneal injection. Of these, 10 wethers were killed three days after dosing (five from each treatment, IR3 and IP3) and the remaining wethers were killed eight days after dosing (IR8 and IP8). Blood samples were taken throughout the trial from sheep on the IR8 and IP8 treatments. Samples of whole adrenal gland, heart, liver, kidney, brachiocephalicus muscle, lung, pancreas and spleen were taken from all sheep at slaughter and were analysed for their vitamin E content. The blood plasma results showed that the most important index of vitamin E bioavailability, the area under the plasma concentration versus time curve, was greater in the intraperitoneally than intraruminally dosed sheep. There was a higher concentration of vitamin E in the tissues from the intraperitoneal group than the intraruminal group three days after the intraperitoneal injections. The results suggest that the greatest responses in vitamin E concentration in plasma and the tissues were recorded in sheep following intraperitoneal rather than intraruminal dosing with DL-alpha-tocopheryl acetate.  相似文献

The question addressed was whether apparent crude fibre digestibility in ponies would change after lowering protein intake from adequate to borderline deficient. Four adult ponies were fed a low- and high-protein diet according to a cross-over design. The diets consisted of grass hay and concentrates and provided either 1.5 or 3.6 g digestible crude protein/kg0.75 per day. The two whole rations provided 2.4 g crude fibre/kg body weight per day. Apparent crude fibre digestibility was not affected by protein intake (low-protein diet: 42.9 ± 4.03%; high-protein diet: 38.1 ± 1.14%, means ± SE, n =4). The low-protein diet caused a significant increase in the ratio of faecal: urinary nitrogen. It is suggested that, when the low-protein diet was fed, sufficient urea flew from the blood into the intestine and ammonia released in the hindgut was conserved so that microbial growth, and thus fibre fermentation, was maintained.  相似文献

The aim of the study was to investigate the effects of supplementation of a microencapsulated blend of tributyrin and lactitol (TL) to a standard European (EU) diet without antibiotic growth promoters on intestinal metabolism and mucosa development of weaned piglets and to compare it with a standard US diet containing animal proteins, zinc oxide, copper sulfate, and carbadox. Ninety piglets weaned at 21 d were divided into 3 dietary groups consisting of 5 replicates each: 1) US diet supplemented with 55 mg/kg of carbadox, and 2.5% each of plasma proteins and spray-dried blood cells in the first phase, 3,055 mg/kg of Zn in the first and second phases, and 180 mg/kg of Cu in the third phase; 2) EU diet based on vegetable proteins and no antibiotics; and 3) the same EU diet supplemented with 3,000 mg/kg of microencapsulated TL. The study was divided into 3 phases: 0 to 7, 8 to 21, and 22 to 35 d. On d 7, 21, and 35, animals were weighed, and feed consumption and efficiency were determined. On d 14 and 35, one pig per pen was killed, and the intestinal contents and mucosa from the proximal, middle, distal jejunum and the ileum were sampled. Intestinal wall sections were fixed for histological analysis, and intestinal content was used for VFA, ammonia, and polyamine analysis. Throughout the study (d 0 to 35), the US diet had greater ADG and ADFI than the EU diet (P < 0.05). The EU diet supplemented with TL tended to have 11% greater ADG (P = 0.17). Feeding the EU diet caused a reduction in proximal and middle jejunum villi length by 10% (P < 0.05) and an increase in crypt size in proximal jejunum (P < 0.05) compared with the US diet, probably due to an increased rate of cell loss and crypt cell production. The TL supplementation resulted in longer villi along the jejunum and less deep crypts in the proximal jejunum (+15.9 and -8.9%, respectively; P < 0.05) than the unsupplemented EU diet. The TL diet increased the concentrations of cadaverine and putrescine in the small intestine (P < 0.05) and seemed to increase cadaverine, histamine, putrescine, and spermine in the large intestine by 1.5- to 10-fold compared with the US or EU diet. In conclusion, although the US diet had a greater effect on growth performance and mucosal trophic status than the EU diets, the supplementation with slowly released TL seemed to be an effective tool to partially overcome the adverse effects of vegetable protein diets.  相似文献

The experiment was conducted to investigate the influence of maize (Zea mays), sorghum (Sorghum bicolor) and millet (Pennisetum americannum) silages with or without concentrate on nutrients intake, digestibility, nitrogen balance and weight gain in Sipli sheep. Six experimental diets were formulated having 100% maize silage (MS), maize silage and concentrate as 50:50 (MSC), 100% sorghum silage (SS), sorghum silage and concentrate as 50:50 (SSC), 100% millet silage (MiS) and millet silage and concentrate as 50:50 (MiSC), respectively. For this purpose, 24 Sipli lambs were randomly allotted to six experimental diets in a completely randomized design for 90 days, four lambs per diet. The results indicated that among various silage diets, lambs fed MS diet consumed higher dry matter (DM) than those fed SS and MiS diets. Likewise, lambs offered MSC had higher dry matter intake than those fed SSC and MiSC diets. Crude protein (CP) and neutral detergent fibre (NDF) consumed by the lambs also followed the similar trend. Higher DM, CP and NDF digestibilities were also observed in lambs fed MS and MSC diets than those fed SS, SSC, MiS and MiSC diets. Overall digestibilities of DM, CP and NDF were higher in experimental diets containing silage with concentrate. Lambs fed MS diet had 2.79 g/day and 4.45 g/day higher N retention than those fed SS and MiS, respectively. Similarly, lambs fed MSC diet had 2.24 g/day and 5.12 g/day higher N retention than those fed SSC and MiSC diets, respectively. The results showed that lambs fed MSC gained more daily weight gain had better feed conversion ratio than those fed MS, SS, SSC, MiS and MiSC diets. The findings of the present study indicated that lambs fed MSC diet had higher nutrients intake, digestibility, nitrogen balance and weight gain.  相似文献
