Evaluation of nitrogen (N) dynamic in soil using regression equations is important for proper determination of N fertilization. A 3-year field experiment was conducted to (1) develop the best-fitted regression model relating corn grain and stover yield to soil residual ammonium (NH4)-N and nitrate (NO3)-N for corn yield prediction and (2) evaluate how such a model can be beneficial to the health of ecosystem by predicting the appropriate rates of N fertilization for corn production. Soil NH4-N and NO3-N were determined at corn harvest at the depths of 0–30 and 30–60 cm. Nitrogen fertilizer rates and soil mineral N accounted for a maximum of 93% variation in corn grain yield. Soil mineral N enhanced corn yield more than N fertilizer. Totals of 63.1 and 14.1 kg/ha of soil residual NO3-N and NH4-N were found in the 0- to 60-cm depth, indicating the importance of performing soil N tests.

Abstract

No‐tillage corn (Zea mays L.) culture normally entails the placement of N fertilizer on the soil surface without mechanical incorporation. This field investigation was conducted to compare the N fertilizers that are most widely used in Virginia, when applied in this manner, for their effectiveness in producing notillage corn. Comparisons of the time of applying NH4NO3 were also made. Grain and stover yields, in addition to N removed in the crop, were used to draw conclusions. The experiments were conducted on both fertile and infertile soils in 1972 and 1973, both of which were relatively wet years. The fertilizers tested, urea, NH4NO3, and N solutions, were equally effective, per unit of N applied. Split applications of NH4NO3 showed no statistically significant advantage over all applied at planting but slightly trended to do so. N deficiency reduced grain yields relatively more than stover yields.

Leaf concentrations of nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P), potassium (K), iron (Fe), and manganese (Mn) in ‘Sterling’ muscadine grapes (Vitis rotundifolia Michaux) grown for two years in sand culture were not influenced by different N‐fertilizer sources. Leaf zinc (Zn) and copper (Cu) were higher with ammonium nitrate (NH4NO3)than ammonium sulfate [(NH4)2SO4]. Shoot growth was greatest with NH4NO3. Leaf Ca, Mg, Mn, and Cu content decreased and leaf N increased as N‐fertilizer rates were raised. Plant growth was positively correlated with leaf N, but was negatively correlated with leaf Ca, Mg, Fe, Cu, and Mn content. Percent Mg in the leaves was reduced when N levels, regardless of N source, were raised from the low (1.8 mM) to the middle (5.4 mM) rate. High leaf‐N levels were correlated with lower Ca and Mg in the leaves, indicating a relationship between N fertilization and the late‐season Mg deficiency often observed in muscadine grapes.

The effect of source and sink manipulation on accumulation of micronutrients (Fe, Zn, Mn, Cu) and protein in wheat grains was studied in a field experiment and ear culture. The source and sink manipulation was obtained by reducing assimilate source (through defoliation and spike shading) or sink (through 50% spikelets removal) after anthesis in the field and by changing sucrose or NH4NO3 levels of the culture media in ear culture. In the field experiment, reducing source and sink generally increased Fe, Zn, Mn, Cu, and protein concentrations except defoliation which decreased Mn concentration. Grain yield as well as micronutrient and protein contents in grains were all reduced by reducing source and sink sizes, suggesting that the accumulation of micronutrients and protein in grains was restricted by source supply and sink capacity. In ear culture, the supply of 20 to 80 g L–1 sucrose increased grain weight and yield, but decreased grain Fe, Zn, Mn, Cu, and protein concentrations. The supply of 0.57 to 2.28 g L–1 NH4NO3 increased grain yield and the concentrations and contents of micronutrients and protein. All these results show that micronutrient and protein accumulation in grains can be affected by the source–sink relationship of carbohydrate and nitrogen. Adequate N supply can simultaneously increase grain yield and the accumulation of Fe, Zn, Mn, Cu, and protein.

’Shogoin’ turnip plants (Brassica rapa L.) were grown in sand culture under five nitrate:ammonium (NO3:NH4) ratios (N:N of 1:0, 3:1, 1:1, 1:3, 0:1). The leaves expressed symptoms of NH4 toxicity (reduced growth and curly leaves with dark‐green areas surrounding yellow spots) when NH4 was the dominant nitrogen (N) form. Increasing NO3 in the nutrient solution significantly (p<0.01) increased leaf and root fresh weight and dry weight. Leaf nutrient concentration and composition of all elements analyzed, except N and calcium (Ca), responded quadratically (p<0.01) to NO3:NH4 ratios, and the highest values were observed with the 1:0 [for molybdenum (Mo)], 3:1 ([or magnesium (Mg)], 1:1 [for boron (B), coper (Cu), iron (Fe), manganese (Mn ), and zinc (Zn)] or 1:3 [for phosphorus (P) and potassium (K)] treatments. Nitrogen and Ca leaf concentration responses were linear and highest at 0:1 and at 1:0, respectively. Cultural practices and fertilizer applications should maintain NO3 as the dominant N form in the root zone, and the continuous use of NH4‐ based or NH4‐releasing fertilizers is not recommended for the production of high yields of turnip greens.

Behaviour of heavy metals in soils. 2. Extraction of mobile heavy metals with CaCl2 and NH4NO3 156 soil samples from arable fields, grassland and forest stands were analysed for the CaCl2? and NH4NO3? extractable contents of Cd, Zn, Mn, Cu and Pb. The average amounts of Cd, Zn, Cu and Pb extracted with CaCl2 are higher compared with NH4NO3 whereas the relation for Mn is vice versa. The proportion of the NH4NO3? extractable contents in percent of the CaCl2? extractable contents of Cd, Zn and Pb decrease with increasing pH, whereas the contents of Mn and Cu increase. Inspite of a differing extraction behaviour of the two salt solutions the CaCl2? and NH4NO3? extractable amounts of Cd, Mn, Zn und Pb are highly correlated and can be converted one into another. The mobile (CaCl2, NH4NO3) proportion of the corresponding total, EDTA and DTPA heavy metal contents is in close relation to the pH of the soils. Using CaCl2 solution the threshold pH values for an increasing mobility decrease in the order Cd > Mn > Zn > Cu > Pb, using NH4NO3 as extractant the order is Mn > Cd > Zn > Cu > Pb. In the case of CaCl2 as extractant soluble chloro-Cd-complexes will be formed so that the Cd mobility in soils will be overestimated in most cases.

Abstract

Fifty soil samples (0–20 cm) with corresponding numbers of grain, potatoes, cabbage, and cauliflower crops were collected from soils developed on alum shale materials in Southeastern Norway to investigate the availability of [cadmium (Cd), copper (Cu), zinc (Zn), lead (Pb), nickel (Ni), and manganese (Mn)] in the soil and the uptake of the metals by these crops. Both total (aqua regia soluble) and extractable [ammonium nitrate (NH4NO3) and DTPA] concentrations of metals in the soils were studied. The total concentration of all the heavy metals in the soils were higher compared to other soils found in this region. Forty‐four percent of the soil samples had higher Cd concentration than the limit for application of sewage sludge, whereas the corresponding values for Ni, Cu, and Zn were 60%, 38%, and 16%, respectively. About 70% the soil samples had a too high concentration of one or more of the heavy metals in relation to the limit for application of sewage sludge. Cadmium was the most soluble of the heavy metals, implying that it is more bioavailable than the other non‐essential metals, Pb and Ni. The total (aqua regia soluble) concentrations of Cd, Cu, Zn, and Ni and the concentrations of DTPA‐extractable Cd and Ni were significantly higher in the loam soils than in the sandy loam soils. The amount of NH4NCyextractable metals did not differ between the texture classes. The concentrations of DTPA‐extractable metals were positively and significantly correlated with the total concentrations of the same metals. Ammonium nitrate‐extractable metals, on the other hand, were not related to their total concentrations, but they were negatively and significantly correlated to soil pH. The average concentration of Cd (0.1 mg kg‐1 d.w.) in the plants was relatively high compared to the concentration previously found in plants grown on the other soils. The concentrations of the other heavy metals Cu, Zn, Mn, Ni, and Pb in the plants were considered to be within the normal range, except for some samples with relatively high concentrations of Ni and Mn (0–11.1 and 3.5 to 167 mg kg‘1 d.w., respectively). The concentrations of Cd, Cu, Zn, Ni, and Mn in grain were positively correlated to the concentrations of these respective metals in the soil extracted by NH4NO3. The plant concentrations were negatively correlated to pH. The DTPA‐extractable levels were not correlated with plant concentration and hence DTPA would not be a good extractant for determining plant availability in these soils.

This study was conducted to evaluate the redistribution of the heavy metals Cd, Cu, Pb, Ni, and Zn among different soil fractions by N fertilizers. In a lab experiment, soil columns were leached with distilled water, KNO3, NaNO3, NH4NO3, or Ca(NO3)2 · 4H2O. After leaching, soil samples were sequentially extracted for exchangeable (EXCH), carbonate (CARB), organic‐matter (OM), Mn oxide (MNO), Fe oxide (FEO), and residual (RES) fractions. Distilled water significantly increased the concentrations of Cd and Ni in EXCH fraction, while concentration of Cu and Zn did not change significantly. Application of KNO3, NaNO3, NH4NO3, or Ca(NO3)2 · 4H2O significantly increased the concentrations of Cd and Zn in EXCH fraction, while concentration of Pb and Ni was decreased. Application of all fertilizers caused an increase of Cu in the OM fraction. Moreover, leaching with these solutions significantly increased Cd [except in Ca(NO3)2 · 4H2O], Cu, and Zn concentrations in the CARB fraction, while Pb and Ni concentrations were decreased. With application of all leaching solutions, Zn in the EXCH, CARB, FEO, and MNO fractions was significantly increased, while Zn in the OM fraction did not change. The mobility index indicated that Ca(NO3)2 · 4H2O increased the mobility of Cd, Cu, and Zn in the soil, whereas NaNO3 decreased the mobility of Pb and Ni in the soil. The mobility index of Pb decreased by all leaching solutions. Thus, these results suggest that applying N fertilizers may change heavy‐metal fractions in contaminated calcareous soil and possibly enhance metal mobility and that N‐fertilization management therefore may need modification.

Subsoil acidity restricts root growth and reduces crop yields in many parts of the world. More than half of the fertilizer nitrogen(N) applied in crop production is currently lost to the environment. This study aimed to investigate the effect of gypsum application on the efficiency of N fertilizer in no-till corn(Zea mays L.) production in southern Brazil. A field experiment examined the effects of surface-applied gypsum(0, 5, 10, and 15 Mg ha~(-1)) and top-dressed ammonium nitrate(NH_4NO_3)(60, 120, and 180 kg N ha~(-1)) on corn root length, N uptake, and grain yield. A greenhouse experiment was conducted using undisturbed soil columns collected from the field experiment site to evaluate NO_3-N leaching, N uptake, and root length with surface-applied gypsum(0 and 10 Mg ha~(-1)) and top-dressed NH_4NO_3(0 and 180 kg N ha~(-1)). Amelioration of subsoil acidity due to gypsum application increased corn root growth,N uptake, grain yield, and N use efficiency. Applying gypsum to the soil surface increased corn grain yield by 19%–38% and partial factor productivity of N(PFPN) by 27%–38%, depending on the N application rate. Results of the undisturbed soil column greenhouse experiment showed that improvement of N use efficiency by gypsum application was due to the higher N uptake from NO_3-N in the subsoil as a result of increased corn root length. Our results suggest that ameliorating subsoil acidity with gypsum in a no-till corn system could increase N use efficiency, improve grain yield, and reduce environmental risks due to NO_3-N leaching.

Abstract

Rooted cuttings of Rhododendron canescens “Brook” and Rhododendron austrinum were grown in sand culture with a modified Hoagland's solution under greenhouse conditions. The effect of varying ammonium:nitrate (NO3 ?:NH4 +) ratios (100:0, 75:25, 50:50, 25:75, 0:100) on growth, chlorophyll content, plant quality, and elemental tissue concentration were determined. With NO3 ? as the nitrogen (N) form, both azalea cultivars exhibited less vegetative growth, lower overall plant quality, with leaves showing visual chlorotic symptoms in comparison to plants receiving NH4 + as the N‐form. Leachate pH was highest with NO3 ? as the predominate N‐form and decreased significantly with each increment of NH4 +. With both azalea cultivars, N‐form significantly influenced uptake and utilization of essential plant nutrients. Leaf concentrations of N, potassium (K), calcium (Ca), sulfur (S), boron (B), and molybdenum (Mo) were highest with NO3 ?‐N. Leaf elemental concentrations of phosphorous (P), magnesium (Mg), copper (Cu), iron (Fe), manganese (Mn), and zinc (Zn) increased as NH4 + supplied more of the N‐ratio. Significant differences in Mg, Mn, and Zn were observed between species. Results from this study show that foliar N concentration is not an accurate indicator of plant growth response. Further investigations are needed to determine if foliarchlorosis and low growth rates observed with NO3 ? fed plants due to an Fe deficiency, to low nitrate reductase (NR) activity in the leaves, or to a combination of these factors.

Abstract

Experiments were conducted using different NO3 /NH4 + ratios to determine the effects of these sources of N on mineral element uptake by sorghum [Sorghum bicolor (L.) Moench] plants grown in nutrient solution. The NO3 /NH4 + ratios in nutrient solution were 200/0, 195/5, 190/10, and 160/40 mg N L–1. Nutrient solutions were sampled daily and plants harvested every other day during the 12‐day treatment period.

Moderately severe Fe deficiencies were observed on leaves of plants grown with 200/0 NO3 /NH4 + solutions, but not on the leaves of plants grown with the other NO3 /NH4 + ratios. As plants aged, less Fe, Mn, and Cu were translocated from the roots to leaves and leaf/root ratios of these elements decreased dramatically in plants grown with 200/0 NO3 /NH4 + solutions. Extensive amounts of Fe, Mn, and Cu accumulated in or on the roots of plants grown with 200/0 NO3 /NH4 + solutions. Manganese and Cu may have interacted strongly with Fe to inhibit Fe translocation to leaves and to induce Fe deficiency. As the proportion of NH4 + in solution increased, K, Ca, Mg, Mn, and Zn concentrations decreased in the leaves, and Ca, Mg, Mn, and Cu concentrations decreased in roots. Potassium and Zn tended to increase in roots as NH4 + in solution increased.

Abstract

The relative effectiveness of Mehlich I (.025N H2SO4 + .05N HCl) and Mehlich III (0.2N CH3COOH + 0.25N NH4NO3 +.015N NH4F + .013N HNO3 + .001M EDTA) extractants as predictors of Mn, Cu and Zn uptake was assessed in a greenhouse experiment with four Delaware soils. The soils were adjusted to eight pH levels by addition of Ca(OH)2 or elemental S, and received comparable amounts of Mn, Cu and Zn as either (1) MnSO4 + CuSO4 + ZnSO4 or (2) Poultry Manure. Mehlich 1 and III extractable Mn and Zn, but not Cu, were well correlated in most instances. Excellent correlations were obtained between Mn uptake and Mehlich I and Mehlich III extractable Mn, for all soils and sources. In general, however, neither Zn nor Cu was found to correlate well with plant uptake. Based on this study, conversion to Mehlich III, as a routine soil test extractant for micronutrients, would not result in a significant improvement over the currently used Mehlich I extractant.

A soil incubation study was conducted to evaluate the effect of winter cereal rye (Secale cereale L.) cover crop (CC) biomass and fertilizer nitrogen (N) addition on soil inorganic-N. Rye aboveground biomass was collected following corn (Zea mays L.) and soybean [Glycine max (L.) Merr.], and incubated at equivalent field temperatures for 105 d at rates of 1120, 2240, and 3360 kg dry matter (DM) ha?1. Despite N addition from the rye biomass at any rate, there was no real effect on ammonium (NH4)-N, and only from 63 d to 105 d a limited net increase in nitrate (NO3)-N and inorganic-N was observed compared to no-rye. Nitrate-N and inorganic-N concentrations change per heat unit (HU) accumulation was negative with rye addition through 7 d, but was positive consistently across the remaining incubation period with or without rye. Overall, the rye CC biomass had only a neutral to small positive effect on soil inorganic-N.

Abstract

The presidedress soil nitrate test (PSNT) and the presidedress tissue nitrogen test (PTNT) have been developed to assess residual soil nitrogen (N) sufficiency for corn (Zea mays L.) in the humid eastern U.S. We conducted field studies at 47 sites during 1990 and 1991 to evaluate the use of the PSNT and PTNT for corn in Coastal Plain, Piedmont, and Appalachian Ridge and Valley regions of Virginia. Seven rates of fertilizer N (0, 45, 90, 135, 180, 225, and 270 kg/ha) were applied at corn height of 0.40 to 0.50 m and replicated four times in a randomized complete block design. Whole corn plants and soil to a depth of 0.30 m were sampled when corn height was 0.15 to 0.30 m to estimate available soil N prior to the application of fertilizer N treatments. Corn grain yield response to fertilizer N was used to assess residual soil N availability. Nitrogen concentration of whole corn plants at 0.15 to 0.30 m height was not an accurate indicator of plant‐available soil N. Corn yields were maximized without sidedress N at the 19 sites where soil NO3‐N was at least 18 mg‐kg‐1 and at the 17 sites where soil (NO3+NH4)‐N was at least 22 mg‐kg‐1. The PSNT predicted corn N sufficiency regardless of soil physiographic region or surface texture; however, the critical values for NO3‐N and (NO3+NH4)‐N were 3 to 5 mg‐kg‐1 lower than those established in Pennsylvania and Maryland, where cooler soil temperatures may permit greater residence time of inorganic N.

Abstract

Plant growth in saline soils is regulated by the availability of nitrogen (N). High soil nitrate (NO3)‐N can lead to poor water quality. Many workers think that NO3‐N as a source for N can contribute to better plant growth in saline soils. The purpose of this work was to determine the necessity of NO3‐N and the ratio of NO3/ammonium (NH4) in the N fertilizer which gives higher productivity of the biomass yield of corn. Corn (Zea mays L.) plants (Var. LG11) were grown under saline soil conditions (8.5 dS m‐1), soils taken from the Euphrates valley (ACSAO Research Station) at Deir‐Ez‐Zor, east of Syria, from the surface layer of soil (0–25 cm). Five levels of N were applied in two forms, ammonium sulfate [15(NH4)2SO4] with enrichment (1.5% a) as the NH4‐N form and calcium nitrate [Ca(NO3)2] as the NO3‐N form, besides fixed amounts of phosphorus (P) and potassium (K) for all N treatments. The corn plants were harvested at the flowering stage (56 days old), oven dried, weighed, and analyzed for total N and 15N recovery. The results indicated that the dry matter weight for treatments which received a combination of NH4‐N and NO3‐N gave higher dry matter yield than a single treatment of one source of N. But, NO3‐N was more effective in improving yield than NH4‐N. Nitrogen recoveries on the basis of added and absorbed N derived from fertilizer were significantly more affected by NO3‐N than NH4‐N.

‘Helleri’ holly (Ilex crenata Thunb. ‘Helleri') plants were grown in solution culture at aluminum (Al) concentrations of 0, 6, 12, 24, and 48 mg.L‐1 for 116 days. Aluminum did not affect root or crown index, stem length growth, plant dry weight, or leaf area. Aluminum treatments significantly increased Al uptake and reduced nutrient uptake of magnesium (Mg), calcium (Ca), zinc (Zn), and copper (Cu) on some sampling dates. Iron (Fe) and manganese (Mn) uptake decreased on most sampling dates but increased on some with Al treatments. Potassium (K), phosphorus (P), and boron (B) uptake were significantly affected by Al, decreasing and increasing at different sampling dates. Although plants preferentially took up ammonium‐nitrogen (NH4 +‐N) in all treatments (including 0 Al controls), neither NH4 +‐N nor nitrate‐nitrogen (NO3 ‐N) uptake were affected by Al. Tissue concentrations of P, K, B, Zn, and Al increased with Al treatment; whereas tissue Ca, Mg, and Cu concentrations decreased with increasing Al. Iron and Mn tissue concentrations exhibited increases and decreases in different tissues. Results indicated that ‘Helleri’ holly was tolerant of high concentrations of Al.

Abstract

Individual soil tests are used to assess plant nutrient element needs. Separate soil tests, however, are time consuming and costly. Our objective was to develop a 0.5M sodium bicarbonate (NaHCO3) soil phosphorus (P) test in combination with 0.005M diethylenetriaminepentaacetic acid (DTPA) so macronutrient dements: ammonium‐nitrogen (NH4‐N), nitrate‐nitrogen (NO3‐N), P, potassium (K), calcium (Ca), and magnesium (Mg); and micronutrients: iron (Fe), manganese (Mn), zinc (Zn), and copper (Cu) could be quantified in one extraction. The NaHCO3‐DTPA extracting solution is a combination of 0.5M NaHCO3 and 0.005M DTPA and has a pH of 7.60±0.05. Sodium in the solution enhances the NH4, K, Ca, and Mg extraction; bicarbonate (HCO3) is for P extraction; DTPA chelates Ca, Mg, and micronutrients; and the water is for NO3 extraction. Soil samples (0–15 cm depth) came from two sources. The first set was from 12 N x P dryland proso millet (Panicum miliaceum L.) experiments, conducted from 1985 through 1987 in eastern Colorado. These soils were extracted with potassium chloride (KCl), NaHCO3, ammonium acetate (CH3‐COONH4), DTPA, ammonium bicarbonate DTPA (AB‐DTPA), and with the NaHCO3‐DTPA solutions. The second set included 25 soils from Alabama, Georgia, North Carolina, and South Carolina and were analyzed only for available P with the NaHCO3 and NaHCO3‐DTPA methods. Simple linear correlations for macronutrient elements and micronutrients were highly significant. Critical levels for the macronutrient elements: NO3‐N, P, and K were 27, 11, and 144 mg kg‐1, respectively; and the critical levels for the micronutrients: Fe, Mn, Zn, and Cu were 3.9, 0.35, 0.97, and 0.24 mg kg‐1, respectively.

This experiment was conducted to investigate the influence of ammonium salts on the uptake of cadmium (Cd) and nutritional heavy metals (copper (Cu), zinc (Zn), manganese (Mn), and iron (Fe)) by rice, barley, and spinach. These plants were grown in Cd, Cu, and Zn contaminated entisol (ES) or andisol (AS). The following ammonium salts were used: ammonium nitrate (NH4NO3), ammonium sulfate ((NH4)2SO4), ammonium chloride (NH4Cl), and ammonium dihydrogen phosphate (NH4H2PO4). In ES, the Cd concentrations in three plant shoots were higher with NH4Cl than with the other salts. The concentrations of Cd in soil solutions collected from ES were higher with NH4Cl. Thus, the increase of Cd uptake by three plants with NH4Cl treatment would be caused by the increased concentration of Cd in the soil solution. In contrast, in AS, the concentrations of the heavy metals in the shoots of all plants were not different among NH4 applications, with one exception, the Mn concentration in rice increased with NH4Cl in both ES and AS.
