Horses commonly suffer from respiratory diseases associated with excess secretions in the airway lumen, some of which are presumably derived from airway mucous glands. However, these structures have been little investigated in the horse. Accordingly, we describe here the number, distribution and size of equine tracheal mucous glands, and compare the data with similar information for other mammalian species. Two types of gland acini were present. In the thick connective tissue, up to 400 microm beneath the epithelium, gland acini were grouped in thin sheets that, in cross-section, averaged 20 microm thick and were up to 4.0 mm in length. However, it is probable that most sheets had maximal diameters much less than 4.0 mm. Between 400 to 900 microm below the epithelium, the connective tissue was much more diffuse, and glands were larger and more globular. Gland volume in the ventral portion was approximately 1.7 microl/cm2 of mucosal surface, and approximately 1.1 microl/cm2 in the dorsal portion. Glands were somewhat more abundant between, rather than over, the cartilaginous rings, but the difference between the 2 locations was not marked. Mucous gland openings were small (20 microm diameter) and very unevenly distributed, generally occurring about 100 microm apart in longitudinal rows of about 5. Average frequency of openings in the ventral portions of 3 tracheas was approximately 1.0/mm2 of mucosal surface. The volume of individual glands was therefore approximately 17 nl. Although the frequency of gland openings in the horse trachea is similar to that for the tracheas of other large mammalian species, horse tracheal gland volume was only about 15% that of the other species. Therefore, the excess 'mucous' secretions seen in equine recurrent airway obstruction and other respiratory diseases are unlikely to be caused by comparatively high levels of airway mucous gland secretion. Instead, they may be caused mainly by hyperplasia of the mucus-producing cells of the surface epithelium or by vascular transudation.  相似文献

The aim of the present study was to determine changes in the density of sympathetic nerves in porcine ovaries with dexamethasone (DXM)-induced cysts and the alterations in steroidogenic activity and amounts of catecholamines in the affected gonads. Cystic ovaries were supplied by numerous sympathetic nerve fibers. The amount of noradrenaline in the cysts (fluid, wall) was significantly higher than in the large follicles of the control group. After DXM injections, the amounts of noradrenaline and adrenaline significantly increased in the walls of small and medium-sized follicles. In the cysts (fluid, wall) the levels of androgens and estrogens were significantly lower, whereas progesterone was higher in the cystic wall. DXM administration led to a significant increase in the estrone content in the fluid of small follicles. Moreover, a decrease in the amounts of progesterone and androgens was found in the follicular fluid and walls of medium-sized follicles. DXM injections resulted in a significant increase in the immunoexpression of P450(scc) and 3beta-HSD in the cysts, a significant increase of P450(scc) in the follicles, and a decrease of 3beta-HSD and P450(arom). The present study shows that the DXM treatment leads to an increase in the density of intraovarian sympathetic nerves, paralleled by the amount of catecholamines, and that it is capable of changing the steroidogenic activity of porcine ovary bearing cysts. Thus, it appears possible that these events may be, at least partly, involved in the pathogenesis of this disorder.  相似文献

Atypical porcine pestivirus (APPV) is a cause of congenital tremors (CTs) in piglets and has been found in swine populations around the globe. Although systemic distribution of the virus has been reported, there is limited information regarding viral localization at the cellular level and distribution at the tissue level. We collected multiple tissues from 2-d-old piglets (n = 36) born to sows inoculated at 45 or 62 d of gestation with APPV via 3 simultaneous routes: intravenous, intranasal, and directly in amniotic vesicles. In addition, 2 boars from APPV-inoculated sows with CT were raised and euthanized when 11 mo old. In situ hybridization performed on tissue samples from piglets demonstrated a broad and systemic distribution of viral RNA including endothelial cells, fibroblasts, and smooth muscle. Labeling in tissues was more pronounced in piglet tissues compared to boars, with the notable exception of diffuse labeling of the cerebellum in boars. Presence of APPV in boar tissues well after resolution of clinical signs suggests persistence of APPV similar to other pestiviruses.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to evaluate the impact of the slaughter process on the Campylobacter (C.) coli prevalence on pig carcasses and finally pork. To detect C. spp., faecal samples, organ samples and surfaces of slaughter pigs were sampled. Additionally, various abattoir surfaces (n=208) and 227 pork and minced meat samples were included in our study.Whereas a high C. spp. prevalence (64.0%) was detectable in the faeces of slaughter pigs (all isolates were identified as C. coli), low detection rates were observed on pig carcasses after the slaughter process before the chilling period (21.1%).The impact of chilling reduced the detection rate of C spp. on pig carcasses even further to 0.8%. Only C. jejuni strains were isolated after the chilling process. Chilling and the associated drying of the skin are responsible for that massive reduction of C. spp prevalence. Significantly more C. spp. were isolated from livers compared to the corresponding carcasses. Only 5 out of 208 swab samples from different surfaces of the abattoir were C. coli positive. Bacteriological investigation could not detect any C. spp. strains from pork and minced pork meat.The low detection rates at the end of the slaughter and processing line indicate that pork may only play a minor role in the transmission of C. coli infections to humans. By genotyping C. coli-isolates from selected animals we were able to demonstrate three possible ways of contamination of the slaughter carcass surface. Genetically highly related strains were detectable on carcass surfaces of consecutively slaughtered animals. Faecal isolates and isolates from the carcass surface showed occasional high similarities. C. coli-genotypes from tonsils and genotypes from the corresponding slaughter carcasses formed a close cluster.  相似文献

利用凝集素组织化学染色的方法,对岭南黄鸡、番鸭和BALB/C小鼠的气管和肺脏进行了流感病毒受体分布的检测。结果表明:在岭南黄鸡、番鸭和小鼠的气管粘膜层、粘膜下层、肺脏的细支气管和肺泡上皮细胞均有禽流感病毒受体的分布。番鸭和小鼠气管和肺脏的人流感病毒受体的分布范围和细胞类型与禽流感病毒受体的分布稍有差异,岭南黄鸡气管和肺脏未检测到人流感病毒受体的分布。研究结果为探讨流感病毒的感染机制和宿主特异性的差异提供了基础数据。  相似文献

The distribution of neurons projecting to the mammary gland was investigated by using the retrograde tracing method in juvenile pigs (n = 12). Fluorescent retrograde tracer Fast Blue (FB) was injected into the nipple (n = 3) or parenchyma (n = 3) of the second, right thoracic mamma or into the nipple (n = 3) and parenchyma (n = 3) of the last, right abdominal mamma. FB-positive (FB+) mammary gland-projecting neurons were found in some right dorsal root ganglia (DRG) and sympathetic chain ganglia (SChG) only. After injection of the tracer into the second, right thoracic mamma, FB+ neurons were observed in Th9-Th12 DRG but most of them were located in Th11 and Th12 ganglia. As concerns SChG, FB+ neurons were found in Th1-Th4, Th7-Th14 and L1-L4 ganglia. The vast majority of them were located in Th10 and Th11 SChG, which appeared to be the main sources of efferent innervation of this mamma. Neurons projecting to the last right abdominal mamma were found in L1-L3 DRG and L1-L4 SChG but most of them were located in L1-L2 ganglia and L1-L2 ganglia, respectively. This study for the first time has disclosed the localization of neurons supplying the mammary gland in larger domestic animal species, the pig, by using the retrograde tracing method.  相似文献

The uterus is a well-known target of endocrine, paracrine and autocrine acting molecules among which steroid hormones (oestrogens, androgens and progesterone) are of special importance. The uterine tissues (endometrium and myometrium) undergo morphological and physiological changes which are associated with changes in expression of steroid hormone receptors. Androgen receptors (AR) that mediate the action of androgens have already been detected in porcine uteri during the oestrous cycle and early pregnancy. To evaluate the role of AR in uterine physiology, the presence of ARmRNA and AR protein localization in the porcine uterus from day 10 to day 90 of pregnancy and in the uterus from the foetus of day 90 postcoitum (p.c.) and from the neonatal 1-day-old piglet was studied. ARmRNA was detected in the porcine endometrium up to day 18 p.c., while AR protein was detectable in glandular epithelium and stromal cells as through day 90 of pregnancy. AR was also detected in the myometrium on all investigated days of pregnancy; however, on day 90, the immunostaining was present only in a limited number of cells. AR immunostaining was clearly demonstrated in the uterus of the female foetuses on day 90 as well as in the uterus of 1-day-old piglets. The physiological relevance of this finding needs further elucidation.  相似文献

Glycosaminoglycans and the nonreducible collagen crosslink, pyridinoline were determined in stifle joint menisci from adolescent pigs. Medial and lateral menisci were dissected into two portions, the inner third (zone 1) and the remaining two thirds (zone 2) at three different regions; anterior, central and posterior regions. Both glycosaminoglycan and pyridinoline concentrations were greater (P less than 0.05) in zone 1 than in zone 2 in both the medial and lateral menisci. In zone 1, the anterior region had a greater (P less than 0.05) glycosaminoglycan concentration than did the central and posterior regions. Light microscopic observations indicated zonal variations in collagen fiber arrangement.  相似文献

This study compared the short-term clinical and pathologic effects of spiral and total ring prostheses, applied to the cervical and thoracic portions of the trachea of dogs via a combined intercostal thoracotomy and ventral cervical midline approach. The effect of intraluminal placement of synthetic monofilament nonabsorbable suture also was evaluated. Eleven small-breed dogs were randomly allotted to 3 groups. Group 1 (n = 3) were controls that had been treated by sham operation, group 2 (n = 4) had polypropylene spiral prostheses applied to the cervical and thoracic portions of the trachea, and group 3 (n = 3) had total ring prostheses applied to the cervical and thoracic portions of the trachea. All dogs were euthanatized and necropsied 8 weeks after surgery. Clinical complications were minimal and limited to mild, short-term lameness and coughing. Three and 6 weeks after surgery, radiographs were within normal limits in all dogs. Tracheoscopy confirmed maintenance of tracheal lumen diameter and integrity of the mucosal epithelium in all dogs. Gross and microscopic postmortem findings were similar in groups 2 and 3. Mild adhesions were present between prostheses and adjacent structures. Similar adhesions were present where prostheses had been applied and subsequently removed in group-1 dogs. Histopathologic abnormalities included mild to moderate adventitial and periprosthetic fibrosis and mild advential inflammation associated with polypropylene spiral prostheses and total ring prostheses. The majority (70%) of intratracheal sutures evaluated were covered by microscopically normal ciliated mucosal epithelium by 8 weeks after surgery.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献

Wounds of the esophagus and trachea are uncommon, but closed wounds can be difficult to diagnose and treat. Esophageal wounds are the more serious and can be life-threatening; however, appropriate surgical and medical treatment applied without delay can be successful in some cases, especially in full-thickness longitudinal wounds. Tracheal wounds are usually less severe, but the high risk of iatrogenic injuries to the trachea should be recognized. Also, tracheal injuries can limit the athletic potential of a horse.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To determine distribution of catecholaminergic and peptidergic nerve fibers in canine tracheas by use of immunohistochemistry. SAMPLE POPULATION: 10 tracheas collected from healthy adult dogs after euthanasia. PROCEDURE: Structure of the nerve network and distribution of tyrosine hydroxylase (TH)- and 6 types of neuropeptide-containing nerves in canine tracheas were immunohistochemically studied, using neurochemical markers. RESULTS: Intraepithelial free nerve endings with immunoreactivity for calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP) and substance P (SP) were observed.Tyrosine hydroxylase-, SP-, vasoactive intestinal peptide (VIP)-, and galanin (GAL)-immunoreactive nerve fibers were observed within and around the submucosal seromucous gland. In the smooth muscle layer, numerous TH- and GAL-immunoreactive nerve fibers, a moderate number of VIP- and neuropeptide Y (NPY)-immunoreactive nerve fibers, and a few SP- and methionine enkephalin (ENK)-immunoreactive nerve fibers were observed. Numerous nerve cell bodies with VIP and GAL immunoreactivity and a few with SP ENK, and NPY immunoreactivity were observed. Many TH-immunoreactive fibers were arranged in a meshwork around blood vessels. Nerves with CGRP-, SP-, VIP-, GAL-, ENK-, and NPY-immunoreactivity were also observed around blood vessels. CONCLUSIONS: Complex innervation, including catecholamine- and neuropeptide-containing nerves, which may be related to regulation of muscle contraction and glandular secretion, are found in canine tracheas.  相似文献
