Summary The effect of temperature on the expression of the naked grain character in oats was studied in a growth room experiment which compared eight naked oat genotypes grown at temperatures of 15, 20 and 25°C. Summary The grain yield of F5 lines from a barley cross, grown in field plots, showed no correlation with F3 single plant grain yield. F5 grain yield did however show a significant inverse relationship with plant height and leaf length in the F3, especially at high levels of nitrogen. Shorter plants with shorter leaves in the F3 tended to produce lines of similar habit in the F5, and these characters were associated with lower F3 grain yield and higher F5 grain yield.These relationships are believed to depend on the different circumstances of competition in the F3 and the F5 respectively. It is concluded that plant form in segregating generations of cereals may provide a valuable selection criterion for high grain yield in monocultures.  相似文献

Seed shattering is an undesirable characteristic of rice cultivars affecting the loss of grain yield before and during harvesting. These grain losses are influenced by varietal characteristics. The histological peculiarities of the abscission region obtained were different among rice varieties, and had a close relationship with grain shedding. In order to obtain information for the breeding of new persistent shedding varieties, this study was designed to clarify the inheritance of grain shedding habits in relation to the abscission layer. In the cross combination of two easily shedding varieties, Milyang 23, a japonica-indica hybrid rice with cracked abscission layers and Ashahi, a japonica-type rice with uncracked abscission layers, the cracking of parenchymatous cells in the abscission layer was controlled by a single dominant gene. The breaking tensile strength coincided well with cracked and uncracked abscission layers. In four crosses between a persistent shedding variety without abscission layers and two easily shedding varieties with cracked abscission layers, and two medium shedding varieties with uncracked abscission layers, respectively, the formation of the abscission layer was controlled by a single dominant gene. The easily shedding and persistent shedding habits coincided well when the abscission layers were both present and absent. The easily shedding characteristics were dominant in cross combination. The close negative correlations were recognized between degrees of grain shedding and breaking tensile strengths.  相似文献

Summary Phenotypic and genotypic correlation coefficients as well as path analysis were computed to evaluate the genetic association between six agronomic traits and rice grain yield and also among the traits in a representative sample of F7 lines in the tall Peta × semi-dwarf I-geo-tze cross maintained as an unselected bulk from F3 through F5. Data were taken on grain yield, duration from seeding to heading, panicle number, ratio of panicles to tillers, angle of the flag leaf, angle of the leaf below the flag leaf, and plant height on the two parents and 139 F7 lines. The F7 lines were divided into three groups based on plant height: tall, intermediate, and short (semi-dwarf).Differences in grain yield were highly significant among lines in the tall and short groups, and significant among the intermediate lines. Significant to highly significant differences among lines were obtained in each of the height groups for all of the agronomic traits except for the ratio of panicles to tillers in the intermediate and tall groups.Path analysis showed that among the semi-dwarf progenies, erect flag leaf angle made the largest positive contribution to grain yield, followed by high panicle number and early maturity. Among the intermediates, the erectness of the leaf below the flag contributed most to high yield and was closely followed by earliness in maturity. For the tall lines, erect leaves below the flag leaf and high panicle number contributed positively to yield, whereas tallness and late maturity had a negative effect.Phenotypic and genotypic correlation coefficients indicated that low grain yield was closely associated with tall stature, drooping leaves, and low panicle number in the tall lines. In the intermediate lines, low grain yield was associated with late maturity and drooping leaves. Among the semi-dwarf lines, high grain yield was correlated with erect flag leaves and a high ratio of panicles to tillers. When the lines in different height groups were combined, highly significant phenotypic correlations were obtained between high yield levels and erect leaves, a short plant stature, early maturity, or a high panicle number. Erect flag leaves and high yield levels were associated at a significant level. The genotypic correlation coefficients of the above paired traits were identical in sign and generally greater in value than the corresponding phenotypic correlation coefficients.Mail address: P. O. Summary The positions of quantitative trait loci (QTL) for yield and yield components were estimated using a 85-point linkage map and phenotype data from a F1-derived doubled haploid (DH) population of barley. Yield and its components were recorded in two growing seasons. Highly significant QTL effects were found for all traits at several sites in the genome. A major portion of the QTL was found on chromosome 2. The effect of the alleles in locus v on thousand grain weight and kernels per ear explained 70–80% of the genetic variation in the traits. QTL × year interaction was found for grain yield. Several different QTL were found within the two-rowed DH lines compared to those found in the six-rowed DH lines. Epistasis between locus v and several loci for yield and yield components indicates that genes are expressed differently in the two ear types. Although grain texture has been extensively studied, there is still some controversy about its mode of inheritance. The aim of this study was to use a microtome method to determine the inheritance of grain texture. The backcross method was used with a hard, well adapted cultivar, M29519 as recurrent parent, and Edwall, a soft cultivar with good biscuit-making quality, as donor. Segregation ratio's for grain texture were calculated after each backcross. The backcross derivates M29519 (soft) and M29519 (hard) and the donor and recurrent parents were also compared for biscuit-making quality. The microtome method was found to be very effective to determine grain texture. In this study grain softness was determined by a single dominant gene. M29519 (hard) and the recurrent parent did not differ significantly for any quality characteristics. M29519 (hard) and M29519 (soft) differed significantly for seven characteristics associated with biscuit-making quality, and M29519 (soft) produced a significantly larger biscuit diameter than M29519 (hard). M29519 (soft) differed significantly from the donor parent for six of the measured characteristics. Despite this, M29519 (soft) produced a biscuit similar in diameter to that of the donor parent. Therefore, although the transfer of the softness genes into a different genetic background did not transfer all the factors generally associated with good biscuit-making quality, it did produce a biscuit that did not differ significantly from that of the donor. Malus xiaojinensis, one of the most important wild genotypes in the genus Malus, is resistant to a variety of stresses such as Fe deficiency chlorosis, drought and cold. However, lack of knowledge of its genetic background prevents using genetic analysis to study those agronomic traits and corresponding gene functions. Here, as the first step towards construction of the linkage map of M. xiaojinensis, genetic analysis of the F1 triploid hybrids (M. xiaojinensis × M. baccata) was performed with amplified fragment length polymorphism (AFLP) markers. Using 15 EcoRI‐ MseI primer combinations, 1110 AFLPs were identified, with 31.3% of M. xiaojinensis‐, 12.7% of M. baccata‐specific markers, 54.9% of common markers, and 1.2% of non‐parental markers; 93.3% of the AFLP markers exhibit the expected segregation ratio. Thirty‐two M. xiaojinensis‐specific markers and 47 common markers display a 5 : 1 and 11:1 segregation ratios, respectively, suggesting that M. xiaojinensis is an autotetraploid, or at least an isosyndetic allotetraploid.  相似文献

Summary The inheritance of the dwarf character was studied in F1-seedling populations arisen from crosses between diploid Polyantha cultivars and the diploid dwarf species R. chinensis minima (Sims) Voss. Dwarfness is controlled by a single dominant gene D. R. chinensis minima and its dwarf descendants are heterozygous for D, while polyanthas are homozygous for d. A mulberry variety, Morus alba 'Shidareguwa', has a weeping habit and is used as an ornamental and landscape plant. This variety is known for being difficult to propagate by hardwood cuttings. To clarify the mode of inheritance of the weeping character and its relationship to the difficulty in cutting propagation, we crossed 'Shidareguwa' with a non-weeping variety 'Noi' that has a very high rooting ability. The phenotypic segregations exhibited by the F1 and F2 plants suggested that the weeping habit is controlled by a single recessive gene. In tests of the F2 plants for cutting propagation, no obvious correlation was recognized between the weeping trait and the rooting ability of cuttings. As a result, we were able to develop new weeping mulberry strains with improved high rooting ability.  相似文献

Comparisons involving 28 random F2-derived F6 wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) lines from the cross, ‘Nacozari’/‘Seri 82’, suggested that advanced derivatives with the 1BL/1RS chromosome translocation possess superior agronomic performance in both full and reduced irrigation conditions when compared with 1B derivatives. This performance advantage was attributed to high grain yield, above-ground biomass at maturity, grains/spike, 1000-grain weight and test weight. The 1BL/1RS lines were shorter with delayed flowering and maturity. The superiority of the 1BL/1RS translocation group on grains/m2 was expressed only under the full irrigation environment. Higher harvest index, longer spike-length and grain-filling period were detected only under reduced irrigation conditions. A significant grain yield relationship with test weight was detected only among the 1BL/1RS genotypes, indicating that they possess heavier and plumper grains than the 1B genotypes.  相似文献

Uniformly abnormal meiotic behaviour was observed in 12 F1-plants from a cross between Solanum etuberosum (non-tuberous) and S. pinnatisectum (tuberous). Per pollen mother cell at MI an average was found of 3.64 bivalents (all rodshaped, 1–2 per cell, heteromorphic), 16.64 univalents (scattered haphazardly on a continuous bipolar spindle) and 0.03 trivalents (all Y-shaped). Lagging chromosomes and precocious division of univalents very frequently occurs, leading to unequal distribution of chromosomes, aneuploid gametes and male sterility. Heteromorphic bivalents at MI, loops in bivalents at pachytene and non-disjunction in one hybrid plant, point to a highly abnormal meiotic behaviour. The occurrence of few trivalents is discussed.Considering that according to the literature nearly normal pairing was observed in the intergeneric F1-hybrids Lycopersicon esculentum × Solanum lycopersicoides and L. esculentum x S. pennellii, the lack of chromosome pairing in an interspecific F1-hybrid, of which both Solanum parents belong to the same section, is paradoxical to a plant breeder and might even be conspicuous to a taxonomist.  相似文献

Summary Near-isoline pairs of 1B-1R translocation lines and their parents were compared for protein, hardness, SDS sedimentation, Falling number, pentosan content and flour yield. Comparisons in mixograph characteristics and dough stickiness were made on the flour. The 1B/1R lines were higher in protein than their 1B near isolines. There were no significant differences in hardness, Falling number and pentosan content. 1B/1R wheats produced statistically significant lower SDS sedimentation values. There were no significant differences in milling performance, mixograph characteristics and dough stickiness.  相似文献

Deployment of resistant varieties is one major approach to controlling cassava bacterial blight (CBB), caused by Xanthomonas axonopodis pv. manihotis (Xam). To understand the genetic determinism of resistance to CBB, the use of reliable parameters measuring resistance is necessary. In order to test a relevant method for evaluation of quantitative resistance for mapping QTL (quantitative trait loci), the response of 150 F1 individuals, inoculated with four different Xam strains (CIO-84, CIO-1, CIO-136 and CIO-295), was assessed under controlled conditions. We used two types of evaluations at different intervals after inoculation, one based on a scale of 0 to 5 and the second based on the determination of the bacterial population in the vascular system. Both evaluation types revealed interaction between strains and F1 genotypes. Population values at 3 and 6 cm from the point of inoculation showed a high level of correlation. By performing an association analysis, at 7 and 15 days after inoculation, a significant positive correlation between both evaluation types was obtained. However, the disease rating at 30 days did not correlate with bacterial populations at either 7 or 15 days after inoculation, except for one strain, CIO-84. Evaluation of the bacterial population in stem tissues is time and labour consuming, consequently, for a rapid and reliable assessment of CBB resistance for QTL analysis, we strongly recommend evaluation based on the use of a symptom scale.  相似文献

A restriction fragment length polymorphism (RFLP) map constructed from 99 doubled haploid lines of a cross between two spring barley varieties (‘;Blenheim’בKym’) was used to map QTL controlling hot water extract and grain nitrogen content (predicted by analysis with near-infrared reflectance spectroscopy). Eight QTL affecting predicted hot water extract were identified by a marker-regression approach. The largest effects were found on chromosomes 3HL, associated with the denso dwarfing gene which is present in‘Blenheim’and conferred poorer predicted hot water extract quality, and 4HL. Other QTL were detected on chromosomes IHS. IHL. 2HS, 2HL. 5HL and 6HS. Analysis of single markers by analysis of variance detected an additional effect on chromosome 1H. Eight QTL affecting predicted grain nitrogen content were identified by marker-regression, on chromosomes 1HS, 1HL. 2HL. 5HS, 6H, 7HS and 7HL. There was also evidence for an additional QTL on chromosome 5HL. The positions of the grain nitrogen content QTL on 5HS and 5HL are comparable to QTL on wheat chromosomes 5A and 5D that affect grain protein content. The denso gene had no detectable effect on grain nitrogen content.  相似文献

Summary A survey was made of the sweetness and sourness of the fruits of apple cultivars. Measurements of the concentration of sugars and malic acid in ripe fruits were made and the variation between samples of a cultivar, between cultivars, between years and between cultivars and their tetraploid and colour sports was studied and showed a wide range of variation between cultivars but fairly constant values within cultivars.The study of a number of progenies shows that sweetness and sourness are inherited independently. Sweetness shows a quantitative pattern of inheritance and the progeny mean approximates the mid-parent value. Sourness is controlled by a single gene, with medium and high acidity being dominant to very low, superimposed on a quantitative pattern.The mean sugar and acid concentrations of a progeny and the approximate range of variation can be predicted from the sugar and acid concentrations found in the parents.  相似文献

The inheritance of the red colour character in European pear (Pyrus communis L.) was studied over 3 years in seven progeny obtained by using the cultivars ‘Max Red Bartlett’, ‘Cascade’ and ‘California’ as red‐skinned fruit parental lines. One of these progeny (derived from the cross ‘Abbé Fétel’ × ‘Max Red Bartlett’, a red mutation of ‘Bartlett’) was already used to construct two linkage maps and, being ‘red colour’ a monogenic dominant trait, it was possible to locate it as morphological marker in the linkage group 4 of ‘Max Red Bartlett’. For the first time, this trait has been mapped out of linkage group 9 in a species belonging to the Maloideae subfamily moreover in a mutated sport. An improved knowledge of the genetic basis of production and accumulation of red pigments in the fruit skin will better support the pear breeding programmes aimed to select new cultivars carrying this appealing trait.  相似文献

The normal and selfed families of the triple test cross were employed to detect gene action in t'ef for grain yield and other useful agronomic characters in the breeding programme. Cultivars Kay Murri and Fesho were used as L1 and L2 testers, respectively. Eight randomly selected cultivars and two released varieties (DZ-01-354 and DZ-01-196) were crossed with the testers L1, L2 and L3 (the F1 of L1 × L2). In the case of the selfed families, 14 cultivars and two released varieties were used for crossing with the testers. The normal families were grown on an Inceptisol developed from volcanic ash whilst the selfed families were grown on a pellic Vertisol at the Debre Zeit Agricultural Research Centre, Ethiopia. The rainfall during the experimental season was 463 mm. Epistasis was detected for grain yield, yield per panicle, panicle weight, plant weight, harvest index, tiller number, panicle length, culm diameter, days to heading and days to maturity in the normal families of the triple test cross (TTC) of t'ef. Similarly the characters grain yield, yield per panicle, panicle weight, plant height, panicle length, days to heading and days to maturity showed epistasis in the selfed families of the TTC. Epistatic interaction was not important for shoot biomass and for harvest index (for the transformed data) in this family. Therefore, both the normal and selfed families of the TTC were in agreement with regard to detecting epistasis for grain yield, yield per panicle, panicle weight, panicle length, days to heading and days to maturity. Significant additive (D) and dominance (H) components were estimated for the characters in both families, although the magnitudes might have been inflated due to epistasis. The dominance component for panicle length was unimportant in both families of the TTC and as a result the additive components were not biased. In general, the additive, dominance and epistatic components were important in t'ef. Since the crop is self-fertilized only the additive and additive × additive terms are important to develop pure breeding varieties. Therefore, selection for superior segregants should start in advanced generations as homozygosity increases. Italian and Tunisian durum wheats from different eras of breeding were assessed for the presence of a gene for brittle rachis. Nine of 15 Italian durum landraces had brittle rachides. Strampellis achievement was the release of the well-known variety, Senatore Cappelli, which was derived from a Tunisian landrace, Jenah Rhettifah, which has a brittle rachis. Rachides of two Tunisian landraces were also brittle. Since the 1950s, 16 accessions were released as selections from crosses or mutagenesis involving Senatore Cappelli. Seven of these accessions have brittle rachides. F2 segregation in intercrosses of Senatore Cappelli with other durum accessions with brittle rachides indicated a common allele for brittle rachis. Segregation of the F2 from Senatore Cappelli/ANW 10A and the F2 of Senatore Cappelli/ANW 10B showed that the gene for brittle rachis of Senatore Cappelli was allelic to the brittle allele of the Br-B1 locus on chromosome 3B. Senatore Cappelli was presumably the only source of brittle rachis used in Italian breeding programmes. The genes for brittle rachis have been retained in the gene pool of durum wheat, suggesting that the brittle rachis character is not associated with an appreciable yield loss in modern farming systems in Mediterranean environments.  相似文献

Summary Several near-isogenic lines of durum wheat cv. LD222 have been developed. These include a near-isogenic line carrying gene P and designated P-LD222. The P gene from Triticum polonicum determines a long empty outer glume. The objective of this study was to determine the inheritance and chromosomal location of the P gene. To determine the inheritance, P-LD222 was crossed to two chlorina mutants and to a near-isogenic line for the purple culm trait, Pc-LD222. Linkage of the P gene with the mutated gene in chlorina mutant CDd6 indicated that the P gene was located on chromosome 7A. P-LD222 was also crossed with durum cultivar Langdon (LDN) and the LDN D genome substitution lines, LDN 7D(7A) and LDN 7D(7B). Segregation for the long glume trait in the F2 of LDN/P-LD222 and LDN 7D(7B)/P-LD222 was normal (3:1) and indicated P gene was not on chromosome 7B. Significant deviation from a 3:1 in the F2 of LDN 7D(7A)/P-LD222 confirmed the location of P on chromosome 7A, as indicated by the linkage analysis.  相似文献
