Objective: To describe the clinical course and successful outcome of severe generalized tetanus in 2 dogs. Case series summary: Two dogs presenting with severe muscle rigidity, opisthotonus, and trismus were diagnosed with tetanus. In both cases, generalized convulsions, respiratory compromise, and autonomic dysfunction necessitated emergent interventions followed by intensive treatment and monitoring. In the second case, transient mechanical ventilation was required. Both dogs survived and were discharged after 19 days (first case) and 18 days (second case) of hospitalization. Although costly and time‐consuming, treatment for severe generalized tetanus was successful in these 2 dogs. New information provided: Severe generalized tetanus with convulsions, respiratory compromise, and autonomic dysfunction can have a successful outcome with intensive care and appropriate treatment.  相似文献

Two dogs developed a disabling gait abnormality characterised by stiffness. The abnormality was consistent with a diagnosis of myotonia secondary to hyper-adrenocorticism. The first dog had iatrogenic hyperadrenocorticism, and its signs improved substantially after corticosteroid administration was gradually withdrawn. The second had pituitary-dependent hyperadrenocorticism, but myotonic signs progressed despite effective mitotane therapy. Procainamide administration reduced the myotonic stiffness in the second case.  相似文献

Ten dogs were experimentally infected with 150 3rd-stage larvae of the lungworm Angiostrongylus vasorum (Baillet, 1866). Blood samples obtained once a week for 5 weeks after infection was induced were examined for coagulation alterations. Thrombocytopenia developed in infected dogs before and after parasitic patency, which occurred 6 weeks after infection was induced. Prolongation of activated partial thromboplastin time and thrombocytopenia initially were associated with periods of larval migration and, later, at patency, with pulmonary egg embolism and hatching of 1st-stage larvae in the lung. Decreased factor-V activity, significantly shortened values for the prothrombin time, and increased factor-VIII activity were evident during postpatent periods of parasitic infection. Significant changes were not found in factors-XII and -IX activities throughout the course of infection. Coagulation abnormalities were attributed to excessive intravascular coagulation. Immature adults and first stages of the parasite seemed to have initiated the coagulopathy in the prepatent phase of infection, with subsequent coagulation abnormalities occurring at the time of patency.  相似文献

Two dogs with tetanus developed transient megaesophagus and hiatal hernia associated with gastroesophageal reflux and regurgitation. The megaesophagus and hiatal hernia were diagnosed radiographically and resolved with resolution of the tetanus. These 2 cases, plus previously reported cases, indicate that tetanus can cause megaesophagus and esophageal dysfunction. Therefore, thoracic radiography should be included as part of the diagnostic evaluation of dogs suspected of having tetanus.  相似文献

Various degrees of persistent or paroxysmal paresis involving only the hindlimbs or all four limbs were observed in 3 dogs with hypothyroidism and lymphocytic thyroiditis. Clinical features included lethargy, obesity, alopecia, insidious and progressive paresis, hypotonia, and slow segmental reflexes in 2 dogs. Obesity, alopecia, paroxysmal paresis, and behavior change were observed in the third dog. Laboratory tests indicated that thyroid function was less than normal in all 3 dogs. Abnormal electromyographic potentials and slow motor nerve conduction velocities were found in each dog. Muscle biopsy specimen abnormalities included selective type-II myofiber atrophy in all dogs, whereas one dog had angular atrophy of type-I and type-II myofibers indicative of denervation. A substance that stained with para-aminosalicylic acid was observed within vacuoles of type-I myofibers in one dog. Lymphocytic thyroiditis characterized by lymphocytic infiltration of excised thyroid glands was observed in all dogs.  相似文献

CASE DESCRIPTION: 2 dogs (dogs 1 and 2) were examined for sudden onset of blindness. Both dogs had mild obtundation and mydriasis in both eyes. It was thought that dog 1 may have ingested ivermectin; dog 2 had been treated with ivermectin for demodectic mange. CLINICAL FINDINGS: On initial examination, both dogs had mydriasis and decreased pupillary light reflexes in both eyes. Dog 1 had an absent menace response bilaterally. Fundic examination of both eyes in both dogs revealed regions of multifocal retinal edema and folds with low-lying retinal separation. The electroretinogram was extinguished in dog 1 and attenuated in dog 2. Ivermectin was detected in serum samples from both dogs. TREATMENT AND OUTCOME: Both dogs made a complete clinical recovery following cessation of exposure to ivermectin; electroretinographic findings improved, and retinal edema resolved with some residual chorioretinal scarring. CLINICAL RELEVANCE: To our knowledge, this is the first report of resolution of retinal edema and electroretinographic changes associated with ivermectin toxicosis in dogs. In dogs that develop blindness suddenly, fundic examination, electroretinography, and assessment of serum ivermectin concentration are diagnostically useful, even if exposure to ivermectin is unknown.  相似文献

Two dogs developed a generalised bleeding disorder after ingestion of brodifacoum, a compound belonging to a new generation of more potent and longer-acting anticoagulant rodenti-cides. Clinical, haematological, biochemical, electrophysiological and pathological features of two dogs infected with Ehrlichia canis and with concurrent signs of polymyositis are presented. Both dogs had a history of relatively acute onset, progressive tetraparesis, hyporeflexia and generalised muscle wasting. Skeletal muscles were atrophic and characterised histologically by plasmocytic, lymphocytic and immature lymph-oreticular cellular infiltrates with accompanying areas of necrosis. Histopathological similarities between ehrlichiosis and polymyositis are noted and a probable aetiological relationship is inferred.  相似文献

Motor vehicle-related injury is the most common form of trauma incurred by dogs, and cardiac arrhythmias are a well-recognized complication. Although posttraumatic arrhythmias are often observed, little is known regarding their frequency. This study utilized continuous ambulatory electrocardiography (i.e., Holter monitoring) to describe the cardiac rhythm disturbances in 30 dogs sustaining trauma in motor vehicle accidents. Ventricular ectopy was identified by Holter monitoring in 29 of 30 dogs, although the initial electrocardiogram (EKG) only documented ventricular ectopic complexes (VECs) in four dogs. Ventricular ectopy was infrequent in most dogs (i.e., 62% of the dogs had less than 100 VECs per day for the entire study), but 16% developed frequent arrhythmias (greater than 4,000 VECs per day). In all cases, the VECs were observed within 24 hours of injury. Forty-three percent of dogs had at least one episode of ventricular tachycardia, including several dogs that had an overall infrequent rate of VECs (i.e., less than 100 or 100 to 1,000 VECs per day). Although baseline EKGs are useful in identifying arrhythmias in most dogs, the length of the recording should be increased to improve the likelihood of observing an abnormal EKG event. Most importantly, additional EKGs should be obtained or continuous EKG monitoring should be performed in dogs that display clinical signs that could be attributed to ventricular arrhythmias.  相似文献

This article describes two dogs in which an active suction drain was placed to manage dead space at the surgical site and acute haemorrhage and hypovolaemia occurred postoperatively. In both instances, fluid resuscitation and temporary discontinuation of drainage resulted in resolution of clinical signs. Although the underlying cause of haemorrhage was not definitively identified, the use of low-pressure drainage systems and avoidance of interference with local blood vessels should be considered. This is a previously undocumented complication of active suction drain use in veterinary patients.  相似文献

Two dogs were presented with hemifacial spasm. Computed tomography images of both the dogs revealed an intracranial mass. In the first dog, a lesion at the level of the medulla oblongata was thought to cause primary irritation of the facial nucleus, with consequently permanent contraction of the ipsilateral facial muscles. In the second dog, a mass seemingly arising from the middle cranial fossa presumably isolated the facial motor neurons from upper motor neuron control, which resulted in hemifacial spasm as a result of loss of inhibitory interneuronal activity.  相似文献

Progressive scoliosis resulting from hydromyelia and syringomyelia was found in 2 dogs. In one dog, hydromyelia was associated with pachymeningeal fibrosis, with adhesions in the cervical portion of the spinal cord. In the other case, a cause was not established. Neither dog had congenital CNS malformations. The clinicopathologic findings in the 2 dogs are described, and the etiology and pathogenesis of hydromyelia and syringomyelia are discussed.  相似文献

This report details two cases of adverse drug reactions to amlodipine. The first case presented with diffuse peripheral oedema and a history of amlodipine therapy. Haematology, clinical chemistry, endocrine testing, thoracic, abdominal and cardiac imaging revealed no cause for oedema. Amlodipine therapy was discontinued and oedema diminished markedly within 72 hours. The second case presented for bilateral retinal detachments secondary to systemic hypertension. Haematology, clinical chemistry, thoracic and abdominal imaging were unremarkable and amlodipine therapy was begun. Within 72 hours, diffuse peripheral oedema developed that was unresponsive to therapy and the dog was euthanised. Veterinarians should be aware of the potential serious adverse events associated with commonly used drugs; severe, diffuse oedema is a possible adverse drug event in dogs treated with amlodipine .  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To report synovial cysts associated with cauda equina syndrome in 2 dogs. STUDY DESIGN: Clinical cases. ANIMALS: Two German Shepherd dogs. METHODS: After magnetic resonance imaging detection, cysts were surgically removed via dorsal laminectomy. RESULTS: Six and 8 months after surgery, both dogs were free of clinical signs and no pain was elicited on lumbosacral joint manipulation. CONCLUSION: Although described in dogs, cysts at the lumbosacral joint might cause compression of the cauda equina nerve roots. Radical excision of the cyst capsule can result in resolution of clinical signs. CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Synovial cysts should be considered in the differential diagnosis of dogs with cauda equina compression syndrome when lumbosacral degenerative joint disease is present.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To assess the clinical course of disease and risk factors associated with outcome in dogs with tetanus. DESIGN: Retrospective case series. ANIMALS: 38 dogs with tetanus. PROCEDURES: Data were collected from medical records of dogs with tetanus, including signalment; wound characteristics; initial clinical signs; severity of worst clinical signs; time to wound management, antimicrobial treatment, and antitoxin administration; and 28-day survival rate. Statistical analyses were performed to evaluate relationships between the potentially predictive variables and disease progression and outcome. RESULTS: The 28-day survival rate was 77% (among 35 uncensored dogs). The most common initial clinical signs in affected dogs were ocular (n = 18) and facial (11) abnormalities. Nineteen dogs progressed to recumbency with severe muscle spasms, and 14 dogs had high or low heart rate or blood pressure values. Eight dogs died or were euthanized because of complications of tetanus. There was a significant association between younger age and development of more severe clinical signs. Furthermore, a significant inverse relationship between development of severe clinical signs and survival was identified. There was no association between earlier initiation of wound management, antimicrobial administration, or antitoxin administration and either progression of signs or 28-day survival rate. Wound type was not associated with 28-day survival rate. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Results suggest that younger dogs with tetanus may be more likely to develop severe clinical signs. The prognosis for survival in dogs with tetanus is good if abnormalities in heart rate or blood pressure values do not develop.  相似文献

Two cases of myasthenia gravis associated with thymoma are reported. Both were female German shepherd dogs and the thymoma was surgically resected. Aspiration pneumonia secondary to persistent megaoesophagus was a complication in both cases. The myasthenia gravis did not resolve, but there was a more satisfactory control of clinical signs with anticholinesterase treatment. Corticosteroid therapy was used in one case, but the resulting polydipsia increased the incidence of regurgitation, resulting in recurrent episodes of aspiration pneumonia.  相似文献

Two dogs with acute onset atrial fibrillation (AF) were cardioverted to sinus rhythm by the administration of 2 mg/kg lidocaine given intravenously. Each dog was believed to have AF initiated because of elevated vagal tone. This report has potential clinical impact for a subset of dogs because it offers a treatment to circumvent persistent AF. Furthermore, this encouraging result of a pharmacologic cardioversion suggests that further investigation would be of interest to ascertain the effectiveness and mechanism of the antiarrhythmic action of lidocaine in vagally induced AF.  相似文献
