Acepromazine, a phenothiazine tranquilizer, causes hypotension in standing horses ( Parry et al. 1982 ). However, a retrospective study ( Taylor & Young 1993 ) showed that acepromazine pre‐anesthetic medication did not affect arterial blood pressure (MAP) in anaesthetized horses. This study examined the effects of acepromazine on MAP during romifidine–ketamine–halothane anaesthesia in horses anaesthetized for various surgical procedures. Forty‐four horses were allocated by block randomization to groups A and B. Group A received acepromazine 0.05 mg kg?1 IM 30 minutes before induction of anaesthesia, group B did not. All horses received romifidine 0.1 mg kg?1 IV 5 minutes before anaesthesia was induced with diazepam 0.05 mg kg?1 and 2.2 mg kg?1 ketamine IV. The horses' trachea were intubated and horses breathed 50% oxygen and 50% nitrous oxide plus halothane (concentration adjusted as required clinically) from a circle breathing system. Nitrous oxide was discontinued after 10 minutes and analgesics, flunixin 1.1 mg kg?1 and either morphine 0.1 mg kg?1 or butorphanol 0.05 mg kg?1 (matched for horses undergoing the same procedure) administered IV. The facial or dorsal metatarsal artery was catheterized for direct measurement of MAP (every 10 min) and withdrawal of blood for gas analysis (every 30 min). The electrocardiogram (ECG) was monitored continuously with a 10 seconds printout obtained every 10 minutes. Intermittent positive pressure ventilation (IPPV) was instigated if PaCO2 exceeded 9.3 kPa (70 mm Hg). Dobutamine was infused (1.0–5.0 kg?1minute?1) if MAP < 58 mm Hg and was continued until MAP > 70 mm Hg. Mean age, weight and duration of anaesthesia were compared between the groups using a t‐test for independent samples. Gender distribution and numbers of horses requiring IPPV or dobutamine were compared between groups using a chi‐squared test (with Yates correction). To compare MAP over time, the area under the curve (MAPAUC) was calculated and compared between groups using a t‐test. Horses receiving dobutamine were excluded from MAPAUC and MAP comparisons. The ECG printouts were examined for arrhythmias. There were no significant differences between groups (p > 0.05). Group A contained three stallions, 10 geldings and nine mares, aged 6.3 years (range 0.75–18). Group B comprised eight stallions, 11 geldings and three mares aged 7.3(1–16) years. Duration of anaesthesia was group A 97 (50–140) minutes, group B 99 (50–160) minutes. Eight horses in group A and three in group B required IPPV. Nine horses in group A and four in group B received dobutamine. Mean arterial pressure ranged from 60 to 128 mm Hg in group A and 58–96 mm Hg in group B. Mean MAPAUC was 5941 mm Hg minute?1 in group A, in B 6000 mm Hg minute?1. Atrial pre‐mature complexes were recorded from one horse in group B. No other arrhythmias were detected. Although MAP was lower in the acepromazine group, this appeared unlikely to cause a clinical problem. The incidence of arrhythmias was too low to determine the influence of acepromazine in this study.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To determine the effect of age on immunocytochemical staining characteristics of adenohypophyseal cells of Mongolian pony mares and stallions. ANIMALS: 35 Mongolian ponies. PROCEDURE: Pituitary glands from 1- to 22-year-old horses of both sexes were collected at a commercial slaughterhouse in China and allocated into 7 groups according to age and sex: prepubertal stallions (n = 5; 1 to 2 years old), young stallions (6; 3 to 7 years old), middle-aged stallions (4; 10 to 12 years old), old stallions (5; 15 to 22 years old), young mares (3; 3 to 7 years old), middle-aged mares (5; 10 to 12 years old), and old mares (7; 15 to 22 years old). Pituitary glands were processed for microscopy, and sections were immunocytochemically stained for various pituitary hormones. The percentages and cell areas of 6 types of adenohypophyseal cells were determined by use of morphometry. RESULTS: Age-related alterations in adenohypophyseal cells were detected in horses > 15 years old. Percentage of somatotrophs decreased with age regardless of sex, and percentage of lactotrophs increased with age in stallions. In old mares, percentage of follicle-stimulating hormone cells increased, whereas cell area of follicle-stimulating hormone and luteinizing hormone cells decreased. Differences between sexes for percentage of somatotrophs and lactotrophs, and cell area of follicle-stimulating hormone and luteinizing hormone cells were not evident in old horses. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Differences among percentages and cell areas of pituitary cell types in old horses may be associated with degeneration of the sex organs.  相似文献

This study examined the influence of sex steroid hormones on lipid metabolism in horses. The group of 34 clinically healthy Standardbred trotters aged 2 to 4 years was studied during an exercise test. The horses were divided into groups according to their sex. These groups were: 11 stallions, 16 mares, and seven geldings. Concentrations of testosterone, 17-β-estradiol, leptin, ghrelin, glycerol, free fatty acids (FFA), and triacylglycerols (TG) were measured in plasma obtained from blood samples taken at rest and after the end of the exercise. At rest, plasma ghrelin concentration was significantly higher in geldings than in stallions and mares (1,541 ± 206 vs 1,280 ± 288 and 1,310 ± 267 pg/mL, respectively; P = .012). Leptin was lower in geldings than in mares (2.65 ± 0.93 vs 4.70 ± 2.31 ng/mL; P = .036). The post-exercise rise in plasma ghrelin and TG concentrations was significantly higher in mares than in geldings (+220 ± 330 vs -25 ± 206 pg/mL; P = .049 and 0.31 ± 0.14 vs 0.13 ± 0.15 mmol/L; P = .016, respectively). The increase in plasma FFA level was higher in geldings than in stallions (535 ± 178 vs 334 ± 191 μmol/L, P = .046). In conclusion, lipolysis rate in geldings is higher than in noncastrated trotters.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate behavioral compliance of horses and ponies with simulated intranasal vaccination and assess development of generalized aversion to veterinary manipulations. DESIGN: Clinical trial. ANIMALS: 28 light horse mares, 3 pony geldings, 2 light horse stallions, and 3 pony stallions that had a history of compliance with veterinary procedures. PROCEDURE: Behavioral compliance with 2 intranasal vaccine applicators was assessed. Compliance with standard physical examination procedures was assessed before and after a single experience with either of the applicators or a control manipulation to evaluate development of generalized aversion to veterinary manipulation. RESULTS: In all 30 horses, simulated intranasal vaccination or the control manipulation could be performed without problematic avoidance behavior, and simulated intranasal vaccination did not have any significant effect on duration of or compliance with a standardized physical examination that included manipulation of the ears, nose, and mouth. Results were similar for the 2 intranasal vaccine applicators, and no difference in compliance was seen between horses in which warm versus cold applicators were used. For 3 of the 6 ponies, substantial avoidance behavior was observed in association with simulated intranasal vaccination, and compliance with physical examination procedures decreased after simulated intranasal vaccination. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Although some compliance problems were seen with ponies, neither problems with compliance with simulated intranasal vaccination nor adverse effects on subsequent physical examination were identified in any of the horses. Further study is needed to understand factors involved in practitioner reports of aversion developing in association with intranasal vaccination.  相似文献

Limited research has been undertaken to determine the impact of horse age, sex, and number of riders on horse performance in British Eventing (BE) horse trials. Improved understanding of this can aid professionals in planning a competition horse’s career. To investigate the impact of age, sex, and number of riders on the peak performance of horses at each of the main levels of BE competitions. The best score from each horse competing in BE horse trials in the years 2008–2018 was recorded, and principal component and hierarchical cluster analysis was performed. Basic data analysis was used to identify variables associated with particular better-performing clusters of horses. The interplay of the combinatory variables was then used to map out the trends in career trajectory for horses competing at each level of competition in the best-performing and worst-performing clusters. The peak performance of mares was worse than geldings and stallions at all levels. At Novice to Advanced, stallions did not perform as consistently with multiple riders as geldings. The age at which the best-performing groups peaked was similar for mares and geldings in all classes, although stallions peaked at an older age than mares and geldings at Novice and Intermediate level. All horses were a minimum of 4-years-old at the time of competition, as per BE rules.  相似文献

Pituitary and serum from 86 male or female horses of various reproductive states were collected in the normal breeding season (summer) and in the nonbreeding season (winter) at a commercial slaughterhouse. Concentrations of prolactin (PRL), luteinizing hormone (LH) and follicle stimulating hormone (FSH) were measured by radioimmunoassay. Concentrations of pregnant mare serum gonadotropin and reproductive steroids in serum and gross appearance of the reproductive tract and gonads were used to catagorize reproductive state. Concentrations of PRL were higher (P less than .01) in summer than in winter in pituitary and serum of mares, stallions and geldings. In summer, mares had higher (P less than .01) concentrations of PRL in serum than stallions. In mares, concentrations of LH in pituitary were higher (P less than .05) in summer than in winter. Concentrations of LH in serum were higher (P less than .01) in summer than in winter in mares and geldings, higher (P less than .01) in mares than in stallions in summer, higher (P less than .01) in geldings than in stallions in summer and higher (P less than .01) in mares with low serum progesterone (P) concentrations than in mares with high P concentrations in summer. Concentrations of FSH in pituitary and serum did not differ between summer and winter for any type of horse.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献

Post race endoscopy was carried out on 255 two-year-old quarter horses and exercise-induced pulmonary haemorrhage (EIPH) was diagnosed in 166 (65 per cent) of them. Visible epistaxis was seen in a higher proportion of geldings than in either mares or stallions. The prevalence of EIPH was similar in mares (73 per cent) and in geldings (74 per cent). A significantly lower prevalence (49 per cent) was noted in stallions (P less than 0.01). It was concluded that a sex variation in the prevalence of EIPH exists in two-year-old quarter horses.  相似文献

Five experiments were performed to evaluate the effects of dexamethasone (DEX), gender, and testosterone on plasma leptin concentrations in horses. In experiment 1, plasma leptin, insulin, glucose, and IGF-1 concentrations were increased (P < 0.01) in stallions following five daily injections of DEX (125 microg/kg BW). In experiment 2, leptin concentrations increased (P < 0.01) in mares, geldings, and stallions following a single injection of DEX, and the response was greater (P < 0.01) in mares and geldings than in stallions. The gender effect was confounded by differences in body condition scores and diet; however, based on stepwise regression analysis, both BCS and gender were significant sources of variation in the best fit model for pre-DEX leptin concentrations (R(2) = 0.65) and for maximum leptin response to DEX (R(2) = 0.75). In experiment 3, in which mares and stallions were pair-matched based on age and body condition and fed similar diets, mares again had higher (P < 0.01) leptin concentrations than stallions after DEX treatment as used in experiment 2. In experiment 4, there was no difference (P > 0.1) in plasma leptin response in mares following four single-injection doses of DEX from 15.6 to 125 microg/kg BW. In experiment 5, treatment of mares with testosterone propionate every other day for 5 days did not alter (P > 0.1) plasma leptin concentrations or the leptin response to DEX. In conclusion, multiple injections of DEX increase leptin concentrations in stallions, as does a single injection in mares (as low as 15.6 microg/kg BW), geldings and stallions. The greater leptin levels observed in mares and geldings relative to stallions were due partially to their greater body condition and partially to the presence of hyperleptinemic individuals; however, even after accounting for body condition and diet, mares still had greater leptin concentrations than stallions after DEX administration. Elevation of testosterone levels in mares for approximately 10 days did not alter leptin concentrations in mares.  相似文献

A combination of detomidine, guaiphenesin and ketamine was used to maintain anaesthesia for surgery in 38 horses and ponies. Cardiovascular and respiratory depression were minimal and surgical conditions were excellent. Recovery was smooth in most cases but prolonged and ataxic in some pregnant pony mares. Plasma cortisol concentration decreased during anaesthesia, even when major surgery was performed. This suggests that the anaesthetic technique does not itself induce a stress response and may suppress it. Anaesthesia was straightforward in all cases and the technique appears to have potential as an alternative to anaesthetic maintenance with volatile agents. The pharmacokinetics of the infusion are unknown and require investigation, particularly in pregnant animals.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To determine size and weight of the pituitary gland and associations between pituitary gland size and weight and sex and age in horses without clinical signs associated with pituitary pars intermedia adenoma (PPIA) and horses and ponies with PPIA. ANIMALS: Pituitary glands from 100 horses without clinical signs of PPIA and 19 horses and 17 ponies with PPIA. PROCEDURES: Pituitary glands were weighed, measured, and examined histologically by use of H&E stain. Masson trichrome and periodic acid-Schiff staining were used, when appropriate. Histologic lesions in the pars intermedia, pars distalis, or both were classified as no significant lesions, single or multiple cysts, focal or multifocal hyperplasia, single or multiple microadenomas, and adenoma. Relative pituitary weight (RPW) was calculated as pituitary weight (grams) divided by body weight (grams). RESULTS: There was an age-related increase in the presence of pituitary lesions in the pars distalis and pars intermedia in geldings, mares overall, and non-pregnant mares. Mean (+/-SD) RPW in horses with PPIA was not significantly different from ponies with PPIA (15+/-5.9 x 10(-6) and 16+/-72 x 10(-6), respectively). Maximum pituitary weight in a horse with PPIA was 13.9 g (RPW, 2.9 X 10(-5)). Plasma glucose concentration was positively correlated with RPW in ponies with PPIA. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Pituitary lesions may be a factor in horses with insulin resistance and laminitis before development of clinical signs of PPIA. Ovarian steroids may be involved in the pathogenesis of lesions in the pars intermedia.  相似文献

OBJECTIVES: To compare pulmonary function and gas exchange in anaesthetized horses during and after breathing either O2-rich gas mixtures or air. ANIMALS: Six healthy standard bred trotters (age range 3-12 years; mass range 423-520 kg), four geldings and two mares. Study design Randomized, cross-over experimental study. METHODS: Horses were anaesthetized on two occasions with tiletamine-zolazepam after pre-anaesthetic medication with acepromazine, romifidine and butorphanol. After endotracheal intubation and positioning in left lateral recumbency, animals were allowed to breathe spontaneously. One of two, randomly allocated inspired gas treatments was provided: either i) room air (fractional concentration of inspired O2 [FIO2] = 0.21) provided throughout anaesthesia; or ii) an O2-rich gas mixture (FIO2 = >0.95) for 15 minutes, followed by room air. The alternative treatment was delivered at the second anaesthetic. Respiratory and haemodynamic variables and the distribution of ventilation-perfusion (VA/Q) ratios (using the multiple inert gas elimination technique) were determined in the standing conscious horse (baseline) after sedation and during anaesthesia. RESULTS: Breathing O2-rich gas was associated with a decreased respiratory rate (p = 0.015) increased PaCO2 (p < 0.001) and increased PaO2 (p = 0.004) compared with breathing air. All horses developed intrapulmonary shunt during anaesthesia, but shunt was significantly greater (13 +/- 5%) when O2-rich gas was delivered compared with air breathing (5 +/- 2%; p = 0.013). Ten minutes after O2-rich gas was replaced by air, shunt remained larger in horses that had initially received oxygen compared with those breathing air (p = 0.042). Mixed venous oxygen tensions were significantly lower during sedation than at baseline (p < 0.001) and during anaesthesia (p < 0.001). CONCLUSIONS: During dissociative anaesthesia, arterial oxygenation was greater when horses breathed gas containing more than 95% oxygen, compared with when they breathed air. However, breathing O2-rich gas increased intrapulmonary shunt and caused hypoventilation. The intrapulmonary shunt created during anaesthesia by high inspired O2 concentrations remained larger when FIO2 was reduced to 0.21, indicating that absorption atelectasis produced during O2-rich gas breathing persisted throughout anaesthesia. CLINICAL RELEVANCE: In healthy horses undergoing short-term dissociative anaesthesia, air breathing ensures a level of oxygen delivery that meets tissue demand. There is no benefit to horses in breathing O2-rich gas after the gas supply is discontinued. On the contrary, the degree of shunt induced by breathing O2-rich gas persists. The clinical relevance of this during recovery requires investigation.  相似文献

The most widely used method of assessing the physical status of humans presented for anaesthesia is the American Society of Anaesthesiologists Physical Status Classification System (ASA-PS). The ASA-PS has been applied to animals including horses, but its use is problematic. The authors virtually convened a group of internationally recognised equine veterinary anaesthesiologists with the goal of developing a risk assessment tool for the evaluation of healthy and diseased horses presented for anaesthesia. With this survey and analysis, the authors aim to develop a simple rubric system to assess equine anaesthetic risk that augments the ASA-PS system. The goal is to identify both diseased and healthy horses at increased anaesthetic risk prior to induction of anaesthesia so that measures might be implemented to potentially reduce morbidity and mortality.  相似文献

Males horses castrated prepubertally occasionally display stallion-like sexual and aggressive behavior as adults. A retrospective survey of 140 horse owners was undertaken to compare the effectiveness of prepubertal versus postpubertal castration on objectionable sexual and aggressive behavior. Of 94 geldings that had been castrated prepubertally (before 2 years of age), 20% to 30% displayed stallion-like sexual behavior and aggression toward horses, and 5% were aggressive toward people in a stallion-like manner. This occurrence of problem behavior was not significantly different from the occurrence of these behavioral patterns in 46 geldings that had been castrated as stallions (over 3 years of age). When castration was examined as a therapeutic measure to eliminate sexual and aggressive behavior in stallions in which the behavior had become objectionable, it was found that the operation was effective on sexual behavior and aggression toward people in 60% to 70% of horses and on aggression toward horses in 40% of horses.  相似文献

Plasma antithrombin-III (AT-III) values were determined in 74 healthy horses by an automated spectrophotometric assay. The mean plasma AT-III value was 218% +/- 18% of normal human plasma. Plasma AT-III values did not differ significantly (P less than 0.05) among Thoroughbred, Standardbred, Quarter Horse, and other breeds or among mares, geldings, or stallions.  相似文献

This study used discriminant analysis to evaluate body measures and sexual dimorphism in Mangalarga Marchador horses. Discriminant analysis is a multivariate method that generates functions to classify animals using a prior criterion. In this study a prior criterion is male or female. The study analyzed 25 linear and 11 angular measures obtained from 25 stallions and 56 mares registered with the Mangalarga Marchador Brazilian Breeders Association. Knee girth, cannon girth, chest width, chest girth, back-loin length, hip width, distance from elbow to knee, hind limb hoof length, head width, shoulder length, and body length were found to be linear measures that provided evidence of sexual dimorphism. Angular measures with evidence of sexual dimorphism were shoulder–humerus, metacarpal–phalanx, coxae–femur, and femur–tibial angles. Stallions were larger than mares for almost all linear measures, except for back-loin length, hip width, and distance from elbow to knee. Shoulder–humerus and coxal–femur angles were larger in mares, while metacarpal–phalanx and femur–tibial angles were larger in stallions. Using linear measures, two mares were classified as stallions and three stallions were classified as mares. For angular measures, two other mares were classified as stallions and three other stallions were classified as mares. The discriminant functions can be useful for the selection of horses and to avoid registration of animals not meeting the phenotypic standards of the breed association.  相似文献

A new inhalant anaesthetic, sevoflurane, was used to maintain anaesthesia in 40 animals (2 mules and 38 horses of 9 breeds) presented for various surgical procedures. Eighteen mares, 11 stallions and 11 geldings underwent 6 orthopaedic and 34 soft tissue operations. Induction of anaesthesia was achieved with combinations of xylazine (0.5–1.1 mg/kg), diazepam (0.03–0.1 mg/kg), butorphanol (0.02 mg/kg), guaifenesin (50–84 mg/kg) and ketamine (1.1 mg/kg). Following tracheal intubation, a surgical plane of anaesthesia was maintained with sevoflurane in oxygen delivered from a precision vaporiser. Temperature, ECG, arterial blood pressure and expired gas composition were monitored. Mechanical ventilation was used in most animals (n=37) because of hypoventilation (PaCO2 > 7.31 kPa [55 mmHg]). Following surgery, horses were moved to a recovery room and allowed to recover alone (n=36) or with assistance (n=4). Time to sternal recumbency, standing, the time when satisfactory coordination was present (after standing) and the number of attempts to stand were recorded. The quality of recovery was scored on a 1 (best) to 6 (worst) scale. Mean blood pressures at 30, 60, 90, 120 and 150 min of anaesthesia were 72, 73, 74, 75 and 72 mmHg, respectively. Systolic and diastolic pressures at 30, 60, 90, 120 and 150 min of anaesthesia were 97, 97, 94, 96, 93 and 59, 63, 64, 68, 67 mmHg, respectively. Dobutamine was used in 23 horses to maintain mean arterial blood pressure > 60 mmHg. Mean heart and respiratory rates at 30, 60, 90, 120 and 150 min of anaesthesia were 36, 38, 39, 38 and 38 beats/min, and 9, 8, 8, 8 and 8 breaths/min. Mean duration of anaesthesia was 121 rnin (sd: 56 min), mean time to sternal recumbency was 27 min (sd: 13 min), average time to standing (all horses) was 33 min (sd: 12 min) and time to satisfactory coordination was 44 min (sd: 13 min). Most horses (n=37) received xylazine during recovery (mean dose 0.18 mg/kg iv). The median number of attempts to sternal recumbency and standing were 1.0 (range; 1–7) and 2.0 (range; 1–20), respectively, while the median recovery score was 1.5 (range; 14). The ‘depth’ of anaesthesia was easy to control and recoveries were generally very satisfactory.  相似文献

A retrospective survey was carried out at a Florida racetrack in 1984, to determine the prevalence of exercise-induced pulmonary hemorrhage (EIPH) in Appaloosa horses. Of 94 horses examined endoscopically between 30 and 90 minutes after racing, forty-nine (52%) were found to exhibit some degree of EIPH. There was a significantly increased prevalence of EIPH with increasing age in this population. An increased prevalence of EIPH was noted with mares and geldings as compared with stallions, but this was not statistically significant. More horses bled from the right lung than from the left, but the difference was statistically insignificant. An increased prevalence of EIPH with distance run was evident, but this was not significant when animals of the same age were examined.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to investigate the electroencephalographic (EEG) response of equidae to a castration stimulus. Study 1 included 11 mules (2½–8 years; 230–315 kg) and 11 horses (1½–3½ years; 315–480 kg); study 2 included four ponies (15–17 months; 176–229 kg). They were castrated under halothane anesthesia after acepromazine premedication (IV [study 1] and intramuscular [study 2]) and thiopental anesthetic induction. Animals were castrated using a semiclosed technique (study 1) and a closed technique (study 2). Raw EEG data were analyzed and the EEG variables, median frequency (F50), total power (Ptot), and spectral edge frequency (F95), were derived using standard techniques at skin incision (skin) and emasculation (emasc) time points. Baseline values of F50, Ptot, and F95 for each animal were used to calculate percentage change from baseline at skin incision and emasculation. Differences were observed in Ptot and F50 data between hemispheres in horses but not mules (study 1) and in one pony (study 2). A response to castration (>10% change relative to baseline) was observed in eight horses (73% of animals) and four mules (36% of animals) for F50 and nine horses (82%) and four mules (36%) for Ptot. No changes in F95 data were observed in any animal in study 1. Responses to castration were observed in three ponies (75% of animals) for F50, one pony (25%) for F95, and all ponies for Ptot. Alteration of acepromazine administration and castration technique produced a protocol that identified changes in EEG frequency and power in response to castration.  相似文献

Seizures or convulsions that occur during anaesthesia in veterinary patients are infrequently reported in the literature. Consequently, the incidence of such events is unknown. Several drugs commonly used in clinical veterinary anaesthesia have been shown to induce epileptiform activity in both human clinical patients and experimental candidates. The present case report describes convulsions in a four-year old male Bernese mountain dog during maintenance of anaesthesia with isoflurane after premedication with acepromazine and methadone followed by co-induction with propofol and ketamine. The dog had no history of previous convulsions. The use of several sedative and anaesthetic drugs makes it difficult to find one single causative pharmaceutical.  相似文献

Insulin-like growth factor-1 could be a useful marker in the horse for diagnostic, selection, or forensic purposes, provided its physiological regulation is well understood. The objective of this study was to investigate factors, such as acute exercise, fitness training, time of day, sex, and age, that may influence serum IGF-1 in normal, healthy horses. Throughout a 9-wk training program, 6 geldings maintained a mean (+/- SEM) IGF-1 concentration of 302 +/- 29 ng/mL. Moderate or high intensity exercise had no effect on IGF-1 concentrations, when pre- and postexercise values were compared. Over a 24-h period, there was some variation in IGF-1 concentrations but no clear diurnal rhythm. Concentrations of IGF-1 were measured in a large population of thoroughbred horses (1,880) on 3 continents. The population deviated slightly from a normal distribution (P < 0.001) because of large IGF-1 concentrations in 10 horses. The global mean IGF-1 concentration was 310 +/- 2.2 ng/mL, with a greater mean value (P < 0.001) in gonad-intact males (336 +/- 5.6 ng/mL) than in females (303 +/- 3.2 ng/mL) or geldings (302 +/- 3.2 ng/mL). However, the greatest IGF-1 concentrations observed for all stallions, mares, and geldings were 627, 676, and 709 ng/mL, respectively. In mares and geldings, IGF-1 concentrations showed a gradual decrease with advancing age (P < 0.001), but the effect was much less marked in stallions. This study confirms that IGF-1 concentrations are stable, compared with GH concentrations, in the horse and that a meaningful measure of IGF-1 status can be obtained from a daily serum sample.  相似文献
