Following epidemiological studies of gastrointestinal helminthiasis in dairy cattle in Florestal County, Minas Gerais, 80 Swiss and crossbred Zebu×Holstein calves, 8–10-months old, were selected to test the efficacy of three treatment protocols using ivermectin for helminth control. The calves were treated in Brachiaria grass paddocks, naturally infected with Haemonchus, Cooperia, Oesophagostomum and Trichostrongylus species, and then divided into four groups of 20 animals each: group 1 was treated with 200 g/kg body weight ivermectin in April (at the end of the rainy season) and October (beginning of the rainy season); group 2 was treated in April, August (middle of the dry season) and October; group 3 was treated in April, August, October and December (middle of the rainy season); and group 4 was left untreated as a control. The treatments effectively eliminated the worm burden only in groups 2 and 3 (p<0.05), although the calves continued to excrete Cooperia eggs after each treatment with ivermectin.  相似文献

A survey of gastrointestinal parasite infections of young (<6 months old), immature (6–12 months old) and adult (>12 months old) dairy cattle on 16 farms in Kiambu District, Kenya was conducted during a dry season (September 1991 to January 1992) and during a wet season (March to July 1992). The survey was based on monthly coproparasitological examination of cohorts and worm counts in tracer calves. The effects of age, sex, farm and season on the prevalence and intensity of helminth and coccidial infections were determined. Faecal egg and oocyst counts revealed that the overall prevalences were: strongyles (including trichostrongyles) (85.5%), liver flukes (Fasciola gigantica) (34.0%), coccidia (30.9%) and tapeworms (9.6%). Eight species of the protozoan Eimeria were identified, the most prevalent species being E. bovis and E. zuernii. The most prevalent nematode genera were Haemonchus, Cooperia, Oesophagostomum and Trichostrongylus. Season, farm and age of the animals had a significant (p<0.05) influence on the intensity of infection with strongyles, liver flukes and coccidia, whereas the sex of the animals had no significant (p>0.05) effect on the prevalence or intensity of infections. A higher intensity of infection with strongyles and coccidia was found in the wet season than in the dry season (p<0.05). The age-specific intensity was in the following order: for strongyles, immature animals of 6–12 months of age had the highest egg counts, followed by young calves and adults. Calves had significantly (p<0.05) higher oocyst counts than immatures or adults. Liver fluke egg counts did not differ significant (p>0.05) between immatures and adult cattle.  相似文献

The epidemiology of H. placei and of other gastrointestinal nematodes in yearling dairy cattle was examined on two farms in Kiambu District, central Kenya during each of 13 one-month periods from April 1993 to April 1994. On each farm, 32 newly weaned dairy calves were given a single dose of albendazole and then placed on experimental pastures. Twelve of the animals were designated for bi-monthly slaughter (n = 2) and analysis of worm population characteristics and 20 were designated for blood and faecal collection and for weighing. Two parasite-free tracer calves were grazed alongside the weaner calves each month throughout the study period and were also slaughtered for analysis of worm populations. Faecal egg counts, haematological and serum pepsinogen determinations, herbage larval counts, and animal live weight changes were recorded monthly. The study revealed that Haemonchus placei, Trichostrongylus axei, Cooperia spp. and Oesophagostomum radiatum were responsible for parasitic gastroenteritis and that H. placei was the predominant nematode present in the young cattle on both farms. Faecal egg counts from resident cattle and necropsy worm counts revealed that pasture larval levels were directly related to the amount of rainfall. The total worm burdens in the animals were highest during the rainy season (March–June and October–December) and lowest during the dry seasons (July–September and January–February). The very low recovery of immature larvae of H. placei from the tracer calves indicated that arrested development is not a feature of the life cycle of this parasite in central Kenya. The maintenance of the parasite population depended on continuous cycling of infection between the host and the pasture. The agroclimatic conditions of the study area were such that, in general, favourable weather conditions for the development and survival of the free-living stages of gastrointestinal nematodes existed all year round.  相似文献

The seasonal variation of the tick Boophilus microplus in the `Regiaõ Metalúrgica' region of Minas Gerais state was studied using 26 Bos taurus (Holstein)×Bos indicus (Gir) calves, of which 16 animals were 3/4 Holstein×1/4 Gir and 10 were 3/4 Gir×1/4 Holstein. Monthly tick counts were made between March 1996 and March 1998 and, although B. microplus infestations occurred throughout the year, they were greater during the rainy season. Rainfall was the climatic factor that most affected the seasonal variation. The animals with a preponderance of Holstein blood presented infestations that were significantly (p<0.05) greater than those of the other cross. Five of the animals (19.2%) maintained 45.5% of the parasite load of the entire group.  相似文献

Measurements of the red cell values of Nigerian white fulani calves 0–12 months old naturally exposed to helminthiasis were carried out during three periods of the year— early rainy season (May), late rainy season (October) and late dry season (March). The lowest values (overall mean PCV, 28.9 ± 5.7%) were recorded in the late rainy season when helminth egg counts were highest, and the highest values (35.8 ± 7.1) were recorded in the early rainy season when egg counts were moderate but nutritional values of pasture were very high. Although dry season egg counts were the lowest, the red cell values were just within normal limits at this time (31.9 ± 3.6) probably as a result of the low plane of nutrition at this time. The PCV values of calves 0–3 months old were always higher than those between 3–12 months.Treatment with pyrantel tartarate always reduced helminth egg counts (except for Strongyloides sp. in calves 0–3 months old); while this was more effective in the dry season than in the early rainy season, the improvement of blood values was more pronounced in the latter period. These results indicate that the low haematological values previously reported for African cattle could not be an inherited characteristic, but is rather due to the seasonal effects of parasitism and nutrition inherent in the indigenous husbandry practices. Establishment of ‘normal’ haematological values of these animals demands that these deleterious factors be removed.  相似文献

A longitudinal study was carried out to determine the prevalence, distribution and intensity of gastrointestinal (GI) nematodes in traditional, small-scale dairy and large-scale dairy cattle farms in Iringa district, Southern highlands of Tanzania. Coprological examination of cohorts for GI nematode eggs in faeces, tracer worm counts and pasture larval counts were performed monthly for 1 year. Results indicated that the type of management, especially the grazing habit has a significant influence on the prevalence and intensity of GI nematodes. The predominant nematodes were Cooperia spp. (51.6%), Oesophagostomum radiatum (35.7%) and Haemonchus placei (10.2%). The worm burden in tracers was mainly composed of Cooperia spp. (83%) in large-scale dairy farms, while O. radiatum was dominant (60.8%) in traditional farms. Faecal egg counts (FEC) and tracer worm counts were generally low and FEC peaked only in calves and weaners/yearlings. Adults and all age groups in small-scale dairy farms had very low FEC throughout the year. Pasture larval counts, FEC and tracer worm counts peaked towards the end of the rainy season. Based on conditions of the study area, farmers could save substantial amount of money through strategic treatments as opposed to the previous routine of treating the whole herd at least four times a year. Strategic treatments are recommended in calves and weaners only in traditional and large-scale dairy farms. Strategic treatment of adults and small-scale dairy cattle might be not necessary. Strategic treatments at the end of the rainy/early dry season (May/June) and at the end of the dry/early rainy season (November/December) are recommended in the district. An additional treatment against GI nematodes in calves during the mid rainy season (February/March) might be important.  相似文献

The aim of this work was to study the epidemiology and the harmful effect of gastrointestinal nematodes (GINs) on beef cattle in the piedmont forest and grassland region of northwestern Argentina, between March 2015 and March 2016. Sixty weaned female calves were divided into three groups: STG—calves treated systematically with 200 mcg/kg moxidectin every 40–50 days; LTG—calves treated as usually locally implemented, with 200 mcg/kg ivermectin on May 4 and August 5; and UTG—calves not receiving treatment. Moreover, a group of 20 untreated first-calving cows was monitored. Eggs per gram of faeces (epg) and faeces cultures were performed. Live weight gain (LWG) was recorded. Differences among groups were compared using analysis of variance and Tukey test. At the start of the experiment, mean epg was from moderate to high (595?±?480); therefore, this group was treated in May. Mean UTG epg peaked (907?±?754) in mid-winter, decreasing toward spring. LTG epg only decreased partially after treatment, showing 54.2% of ivermectin efficacy. Epg values of STG were always negligible values (95.8% of moxidectin efficacy). The dominant nematode genus was Cooperia (81.9%), followed by Haemonchus (15.5%). The effect of treatments was evident from middle autumn, with STG showing a significantly (p?<?0.002) higher LWG than the other groups. Toward the end of the trial, LWG of STG and LTG increased by 27.2 and 8.2%, respectively, to those of UTG. This preliminary study showed a winter epg peak and a negative effect of GINs on LWG, even in moderately infected calves.  相似文献

Mastitis caused by Prototheca spp or Nocardia spp is considered to be difficult to treat. Both microorganisms are contaminants commonly found in soil. The occurrence of mastitis caused by these agents was studied in a particular dairy farm. In this herd, the animals were kept at pasture overnight and during daytime were brought to a pen where they were fed. This pen accumulated mud and faeces, particularly in the rainy season. During milking, pre-dipping of the teats was performed with an iodide solution, but they were not washed, so a layer of soil and faeces remained which may have contaminated the milking equipment. The herd comprised 91 lactating animals and 47 dry cows. For microbiological examination, 107 milk samples were collected from lactating cows and 186 samples of mammary secretions from the dry cows. Prototheca spp were isolated from 14.55% of the milk samples and Nocardia spp from 4.55%. Prototheca spp were isolated from 8.06% of the secretion samples from dry cows and Nocardia spp were isolated from 2.15% samples. The high occurrence of mastitis due to these environmental agents reflects the problem of keeping animals in muddy pastures and pens, and the defective pre-milking hygiene for the teats.  相似文献

A total of 607 calving intervals on 99 Ayrshire cows with parities from 1 to 10 and belonging to one dairy herd at Iringa in the southern highlands of Tanzania were analysed to study the effect of parity and season or month of calving on the subsequent calving interval. In addition, 22 calving intervals incorporating a superovulatory cycle were compared with those of 52 controls that had calved around the same period. The average (mean±SEM) age at first calving was 985±16 days. The effect of parity on calving interval was highly significant (p<0.001). Cows that calved in December, at the beginning of the rainy season, exhibited the shortest calving interval (404±13), while those that calved in September/October, in the dry season, exhibited the longest average calving interval (466±20 days), although this difference was not significant. Prior treatment with follicle-stimulating hormone to induce superovulation, significantly lengthened the average calving interval (579±28 vs 457±15 days; p<0.001).It was concluded that both parity and FSH treatment affected the calving interval. However, season (rainy vs dry) or month of calving did not influence this interval.  相似文献

A field experiment is described which evaluates the use of an experimental albendazole pulse release bolus (E-bolus) on gastrointestinal parasitism. The bolus was administered at turnout to 9 first-season grazing calves and 9 animals were kept as controls on a separate pasture. Dry summer observed. The E-bolus introduced at the start of the grazing season provided moderate control of gastrointestinal parasitism. The beneficial effect of the treatment was demonstrated by lower strongyle egg counts and significant differences in ELISA extinctions for Ostertagia, Cooperia and Dictyocaulus. However pepsinogen values were elevated in the bolus-treated group, probably because of the long interval (31 days) between the pulsed treatments. Although not significant there was a trend for the bolus-treated group to gain more weight than the controls.  相似文献

The objectives of this study were to investigate the relationship between the concentrations of progesterone (P4) in the peripheral circulation and progestins in the faeces of cows in a smallholder farming area and to monitor the ovarian activity of such cows. The study was carried out in Sanyati smallholder farming area, located 250 km southwest of Harare. Blood and faecal samples for P4 and progestin determination, respectively, were obtained once a week from 35 Mashona type cows that belonged to farmers from three different villages. The cows were weighed once every month and all births were recorded. The concentrations of progestins in faeces and P4 in plasma were positively correlated (r = 0.72, p<0.01). Most of the non-pregnant cows (65%) cycled during the rainy season. Most of those that were acyclic at this time were undergoing post-partum anoestrus. During the dry season, most cows (58%) became acyclic as forage became scarce and of poor quality. Thirty-two calves were born during the study period, mostly during the first or last two months of the year, when there was enough forage. The mean calving to first oestrus in 14 cows that recalved was 71±49 days. Eight of these 14 cows conceived again, the calving to conception interval being 173±94 days. The cows' liveweights were highest in April, at the end of the rainy season. By the end of the dry season, the cows had lost, on average, 15% of their peak weight.  相似文献

Buffalo aged 3–15 months on institutional farms and in the villages of an irrigation project were monitored for gastrointestinal nematodes by faecal egg counts over two years. Apart from treatment for Toxocara vitulorum at 10–16 days of age, no anthelmintics were used. Half of the strongylid egg counts were zero and 90% were less than 500 epg of faeces on the institutional farms, and 67% were zero and 97% less than 500 epg in the villages. No problems arose during four years without anthelmintics on the institutional farms and during two years in the villages. Autopsies demonstrated that the eggs which were present were produced by mixed infections of small numbers of Haemonchus spp., Mecistocirrus digitatus, Trichostrongylus spp., Bunostomum phlebotomum and Cooperia spp. High egg counts of Strongyloides papillosus occurred in calves up to six months old, but were not pathogenic.  相似文献

Signs of severe otitis media in 20% of dairy calves on one farm were associated with Mycoplasma bovis infection, based on isolation from the external ear canal and nares. Affected calves seroconverted to M. bovis and no other significant bacteria were isolated. Infection was considered likely to have originated from cows in the milking herd based on evidence of seroconversion and detection of infection in a milk sample. M. bovis infection should be considered when investigating otitis problems in calves.  相似文献

The incidence of first contact with the protozoan Theileria parva was determined in two traditional cattle herds in the Southern Province of Zambia during a period of average rainfall in 1997 and 1998, following a drought in the previous two years. Compared to that period, there was a marked increase in the number of rainy season first contacts attributable to transmission by Rhipicephalus appendiculatus adults. However, there were still more dry season contacts that resulted from nymphal transmission. These results highlight the important role that climate plays in the transmission of theileriosis in the Southern Province of Zambia.  相似文献

Infective larvae of Ostertagia spp. and Cooperia spp. derived from naturally infected dairy calves were subjected to periods of storage of up to 16 weeks at 4°C or 15°C to determine if this treatment would influence their propensity for arrested development in previously worm-free calves. Results showed no significant increase in the propensity of Ostertagia spp. for arrested development in response to the treatments, but a small increase in the case of Cooperia spp.  相似文献

Cryptosporidium parvum is a protozoan parasite causing diarrhoea in young calves. This cross-sectional study was performed to estimate the prevalence of Cryptosporidium infected herds in a sample of Swedish dairy herds and to identify potential risk factors associated with shedding of oocysts. Fifty dairy herds, selected by stratified random sampling, were included. The herds were visited once during the indoor seasons of 2005–2006 and 2006–2007. Faecal samples were collected from 10 calves, 10 young stock and 5 cows in each herd. Clinical observations of sampled animals and environmental status were recorded, and farmers were interviewed about management procedures. Faecal samples were cleaned by sodium chloride flotation and detection of oocysts was made by epifluorescence microscopy. Cryptosporidium parvum-like oocysts were found in 96% of the herds. Prevalence was 52% in calves, 29% in young stock and 5.6% in cows. Three two-day-old calves shed oocysts. Cryptosporidium andersoni was found in seven animals from four different herds. Factors associated with prevalence of shedders among sampled animals in a herd were age at weaning, cleaning of single calf pens, placing of young stock, system for moving young stock, and year of sampling. Factors associated with shedding in calves were age, placing of young stock, routines for moving young stock and time calf stays with the cow. The only significant factor in young stock was age. In cows, number of calves in the herd and type of farming (organic vs. conventional) affected shedding.  相似文献

The productivity and the prevalence rates of the major parasites of camels (Camelus dromedarius) kept under traditional management conditions at Errer valley, Ethiopia were assessed for a year (October 1997–September 1998). The daily milk offtake was significantly higher (p<0.05) during the wet season (3.12±0.03 L) than during the dry season (1.49±0.04 L). Likewise, significantly higher (p<0.05) daily weight gains (50.68±0.54 g) were observed during the wet season than during dry season in immature camels aged 1–4 years. Trypanosoma evansi, Sarcoptes scabiei and strongyle parasites were present throughout the year, but their prevalence rates were higher during the rainy months than during the dry months. The minimum and maximum point prevalence rates for T. evansi were 5.4% and 20.6%, respectively. Similarly, the point prevalence rates for S. scabiei also varied from 4.7% during the dry season to 21.7% during the rainy months. The highest strongyle egg counts per gram of faeces and highest point prevalence rate (85.7%) were observed in October, a rainy month, whereas the lowest number of eggs per gram of faeces and the lowest point prevalence rate (61.5%) were recorded in April, a dry month.  相似文献

Faecal samples were obtained from sheep and goats before, during and after the rainy season at three locations in south-west Mauritania. Several animals were also necropsied at the same time.Haemonchus contortus was the most prevalent worm. Infection by digestive-tract strongyles andStrongyloides papillosus was always very light (prevalence less than 20%). Sheep were more heavily infected than goats but animals under 1 year of age were not infected by digestive-tract strongyles. It is likely that young small ruminants became infected during the rainy season and that the parasites so acquired are inhibited in their development and/or survive nearly one year as adults.  相似文献

An epidemiological survey for Theileria annulata infection was conducted in 12 selected villages around Ankara in Central Anatolia, Turkey, during the period April 1990 to January 1993. During the survey, 198 cattle of 30 local breeds, 84 Holstein-Friesian×local breeds and 84 Holstein-Friesian breed were examined for antibodies to T. annulata and the presence of the vector ticks. Four species of Hyalomma ticks were identified: Hyalomma anatolicum anatolicum, Hyalomma anatolicum excavtum, Hyalomma detritum and Hyalomma marginatum marginatum. Salivary gland staining indicated that infected adult ticks of all four species were present and, therefore, were implicated in the transmission of tropical theileriosis in the field. Generally, the Hyalomma infestation rate was low, with the heaviest infestations occurring on the older animals. Young adults and calves had very low infestation rates. Most ticks seen on cattle were adults, very few nymphs were found. The blood smear and serological examination of the 198 cattle conducted in March, before the start of the first disease season, showed that the prevalence of piroplasmosis was 11.1% (22 out of 198) and the seroprevalence of T. annulata was 10.6% (21 out of 198). Forty-three animals were then excluded from the study because they were seropositive and/or harboured piroplasms. Ninety-two seronegative animals showed piroplasmosis (92 out of 155) and 34 seronegative animals became seropositive for T. annulata (34 out of 155) during the three disease seasons. One animal became clinically ill with tropical theileriosis and required treatment. The incidence of cattle showing piroplasmosis and disease in the total study sample was 50.7% and 0.5% per disease season, respectively. The seroconversion rate of new infection with T. annulata in the total study was 14.3% per animal season. The number of cattle showing piroplasmosis was much greater than the number of seropositive cattle, which may indicate the presence of another species of Theileria. The two different management systems encountered in the study were considered to have influenced the tick infestation levels.  相似文献

The trichostrongylid egg output in the faeces of seven lambing and seven barren Udah ewes was compared during the beginning of the rainy season in 1974. Both groups showed an increase in egg counts which reached a considerably higher level in the lambing ewes. The highest level, a mean count of 2 650 eggs/g, was reached 2 weeks after lambing. It is suggested that the increase was due to helminths, mainly Haemonchus sp., which had been inhibited during the dry season and resumed their development at the beginning of the rainy season. The rapid decline in egg counts recorded 5–6 weeks after lambing was considered to be due to self cure associated with high rainfall.  相似文献
