Experimental ethylene glycol toxicosis in dogs produced a marked increase in serum osmolality. By comparing measured and calculated serum osmolality and relating this difference to plasma ethylene glycol, it was determined that ethylene glycol was primarily responsible for the hyperosmolemia. Osmometry may provide a useful adjunct to other diagnostic tests in identifying ethylene glycol intoxicated dogs during the early, most treatable, stage of toxicosis.  相似文献

Objective – To review the use of IV lipid emulsion (ILE) for the treatment of toxicities related to fat‐soluble agents; evaluate current human and veterinary literature; and to provide proposed guidelines for the use of this emerging therapy in veterinary medicine and toxicology. Data Sources – Human and veterinary medical literature. Human Data Synthesis – Human data are composed mostly of case reports describing the response to treatment with ILE as variant from mild improvement to complete resolution of clinical signs, which is suspected to be due to the variability of lipid solubility of the drugs. The use of ILE therapy has been advocated as an antidote in cases of local anesthetic and other lipophilic drug toxicoses, particularly in the face of cardiopulmonary arrest and unsuccessful cardiopulmonary cerebral resuscitation. Veterinary Data Synthesis – The use of ILE therapy in veterinary medicine has recently been advocated by animal poison control centers for toxicoses associated with fat‐soluble agents, but there are only few clinical reports documenting successful use of this therapy. Evidence for the use of ILE in both human and veterinary medicine is composed primarily from experimental animal data. Conclusions – The use of ILE appears to be a safe therapy for the poisoned animal patient, but is warranted only with certain toxicoses. Adverse events associated with ILE in veterinary medicine are rare and anecdotal. Standard resuscitation protocols should be exhausted before considering this therapy and the potential side effects should be evaluated before administration of ILE as a potential antidote in cases of lipophilic drug toxicoses. Further research is waranted.  相似文献

Objective: To describe the clinical consequences following ingestion by a dog of a moxidectin‐containing equine deworming product. Few reports exist concerning the treatment and outcome of severe moxidectin toxicity. Treatment, known factors influencing intoxication, and prognosis are reviewed. Case summary: A 10‐month‐old female Border Collie ingested an unknown quantity of a moxidectin‐containing equine deworming product several hours before presentation. Severe neurological signs subsequently developed and included: ataxia, seizures, coma, and respiratory failure. The dog was treated with supportive care including intravenous fluids, activated charcoal, and positive pressure ventilation. Normal spontaneous respiration returned in 34 hours and the patient was discharged 58 hours after ingestion. Full recovery occurred within 1 week of intoxication. New information provided: This report describes moxidectin intoxication and associated respiratory failure in a dog that required mechanical ventilation. The dog's recovery was rapid. Despite severity of signs, the prognosis for patients with moxidectin intoxication is good with appropriate supportive care.  相似文献

Objective – To describe a case of barbiturate toxicosis in a dog secondary to ingestion of a previously buried euthanized goat carcass and to discuss the utility of urine drug testing in diagnosing barbiturate toxicosis.
Case Summary – A 6-year-old neutered male Border Collie was presented to a university veterinary teaching hospital for evaluation of ataxia and acute collapse. Past pertinent history included Addison's disease that had been managed for 1 year. A companion dog was seen 12 hours earlier chewing on the partially decomposed head of a goat that had been euthanized 47 days previously and buried on the owner's property. The dog was laterally recumbent, unresponsive to stimuli, and hypothermic on physical examination. Initial blood work revealed hyponatremia and hyperkalemia, with a Na/K ratio of 18.5. The dog was volume resuscitated and received an injection of dexamethasone sodium phosphate due to a suspected Addisonian crisis. Despite this treatment, the dog remained laterally recumbent and unresponsive to stimuli. A urine drug screen was performed and was positive for barbiturates. A diagnosis of barbiturate toxicosis secondary to ingestion of a euthanized goat carcass was made. The dog was treated supportively over 12 hours with IV fluids and activated charcoal. The dog was able to walk 11 hours after presentation and was subsequently discharged from the hospital.
New or Unique Information Provided – Urine drug testing is a fast, easy, and point-of-care test that may be useful in dogs to assist in the diagnosis of barbiturate intoxication. Proper disposal of euthanized animals is necessary to prevent toxicosis and possible death of companion animals and wildlife.  相似文献

Objective – To describe the clinical experience and therapeutic use of fomepizole (4‐methylpyrazole [4‐MP]) in 3 cats with naturally occurring ethylene glycol (EG) toxicity. Case or Series Summary – All cats were documented to be EG positive by an ethylene glycol test kit. This report describes the dose of 4‐MP used, available clinicopathological data, and clinical progression during hospitalization. All patients survived to discharge. New or Unique Information Provided – IV use of 4‐MP at 125 mg/kg as an initial dose and 31.25 mg/kg at 12, 24, and 36 hours is safe and effective for treatment of naturally occurring EG toxicity in cats. Increased HCO3 concentrations were noted after IV use of 4‐MP. This is the first report documenting the successful treatment of naturally occurring EG intoxication in cats with 4‐MP.  相似文献

Caffeine (1,3,7-trimethylxanthine) is a popular mild central nervous system stimulant found in the leaves, seeds and fruits of various plants and in foodstuffs such as coffee, tea, and chocolate, among others. Caffeine is widely used and is not associated with severe side effects when consumed at relatively low doses. Although rarely observed, overdoses can occur. However, only a few fatal caffeine intoxication cases have been reported in the literature. Herein, we report the pathological examination results and information on caffeine concentrations in the blood, urine and main organs in a fatal caffeine intoxication case. Even though high caffeine concentrations were found in the systemic organs, no caffeine-related pathological changes were detected.  相似文献

Two ponies presented with mild abdominal pain and mild diarrhoea one hour after ingestion of roots of a black locust tree. On admission, symptoms had progressed to depression, weakness and the passing of dark, firm faeces. Treatment was symptomatic and supportive, aiming at the evacuation of the toxin from the gastrointestinal tract. One pony developed severe, reversible neurological signs associated with transient hyperammonaemia in the absence of liver disease. After 24 h the ammonia level returned to normal and central nervous signs disappeared. Both ponies recovered completely. This report describes the ingestion of black locust closely followed by the development of central nervous signs and hyperammonaemia. Increased ammonia absorption due to the intestinal wall inflammation caused by the toxins of the black locust tree, as well as increased ammonia production by enteric bacteria is therefore considered a plausible pathophysiological mechanism of the neurological signs displayed in black locust intoxication.  相似文献

Congenital sliding, oesophageal or type I hiatal hernia was diagnosed in a five-month-old pug puppy presented for evaluation of dyspnoea post feeding. The diagnosis was confirmed using plain film radiography. Surgical reduction of the hernia followed by plication of the oesophageal hiatus, oesophagopexy and left flank gastropexy permitted restoration of normal function. At 12 months of age, the dog was asymptomatic. This article describes the diagnosis and treatment of a congenital type 1 oesophageal hiatal herniation with unusual clinical presentation.  相似文献

Lipid alterations due to experimental intoxication by methyl mercury were studied in rat brain. The methyl mercury was administered perorally as a hydroxide bound to bovine liver protein. The lipids were separated by thin layer chromatography and the fatty acids identified by gasliquid chromatography. The lipids studied included free fatty acids, cholesterol and the main phosphatidylesters, phosphatidylcholine and phosphatidylethanolamine. The methyl mercury treatment resulted in an increase in total brain lipids and palmitic acid (16:0) in the free fatty acid fraction. This increase is interpreted as the cellular response to compensate for the loss of membrane proteins known to take place in the brain due to methyl mercury intoxication.  相似文献

A herd of cattle was accidentally exposed to monomeric acrylamide and N-methylolacrylamide. Seven cattle underwent repeated examinations during 6–8 months after exposure. Abnormal pupillary light reflexes (PLR) were observed in one cow. Ophthalmoscopic examination showed progressive retinal degeneration and degenerative changes in the optic nerve heads in this cow. Light and electron microscopic examination revealed pathological changes in the retinae and optic nerves consistent with chronic stages of acrylamide toxicity. Ophthalmic examination and light microscopy did not reveal abnormalities in the retinae or optic nerves in either the rest of the cattle from the herd or in offspring of exposed cattle.  相似文献

Lung lobe torsion (LLT) results from a displacement and twisting of a lung lobe around its bronchovascular pedicle. This relatively rare disorder affects dogs, cats, and humans. Etiologies include primary (i.e., spontaneous) and secondary torsion due to thoracic trauma, pleural space disease, thoracic surgery, pulmonary parenchyma disease, and diaphragmatic hernia repair. Although both spontaneous and secondary torsion have been described in small-breed dogs, a spontaneous LLT followed by recurrence of a spontaneous LLT > 2 years later has not been documented. This article describes the presentation, diagnosis, management, and outcome of a pug with recurrent spontaneous LLT.  相似文献

A 24-month-old female pug, which had previously been treated for visual hemifield loss, was referred with generalised seizures and other neurological disorders. A diagnosis of necrotising meningoencephalitis was suggested from the clinical signs together with the results of computed tomography and cerebrospinal fluid examination. This was confirmed seven months later by histological examination of the brain following euthanasia. Typical histopathological lesions of the disease were found in various areas of both cerebral hemispheres, including the visual striated cortex of the right cerebrum.  相似文献
