Crop yields are often increased through crop rotation. This study examined selected soil chemical and physical properties that may constitute the N and non-N related effects of crop rotation in potato cropping systems. Potato (Solanum tuberosum L. Norwis) was grown continuously and in two-year rotations with annual alfalfa (Medicago sativa L. Nitro), hairy vetch (Vicia villosa Roth), white lupin (Lupinus albus L. Ultra), and oat (Avena sativa Astro). Hairy vetch contributed more residue N than any other crop rotation, ranging from 110 to 119 kg N ha?1. Inorganic N concentrations in potato soils were related to the previous crop’s residue N contents, and were highest following vetch and alfalfa and lowest following oat and potato. The highest mineralizable N concentration was found following vetch (46.6 mg N kg?1). Saturated soil hydraulic conductivity in potato following all rotations ranged from 9.88 to 11.28 cm h?1 compared to 5.71 cm h?1 for continuous potato. Higher soil water contents were maintained in the 30 to 45 cm depth for all rotations compared to continuous potato. Thus several parameters indicate substantial N effects associated with particular crop rotations. Soil hydraulic conductivity and soil water status may also represent significant components of the rotation effect not directly related to N for these cropping systems.

Potato microtuber production and performance: A review

Almost half a century has passed sincein vitro tubers (microtubers) were first described in potato, but their adoption as a seed propagule has been uneven globally. Consensus is lacking regarding optimal production practices for microtubers and their relative productivity in relation to other propagules for minituber production. There is significant uncertainty regarding the utility of microtubers for evaluation of agronomic characters. However, the application of microtubers in germplasm conservation is widely accepted. Microtubers are producedin vitro in a plethora of different growing systems with varying environment, media constituents, and storage intervals. Many of the interactions between growth parametersin vitro and subsequent productivity appear to be genotype-specific. Accordingly, microtubers come in different sizes, have different dormancy requirements, and differ widely in relative growth potential and productivity. Despite these differences, there is evidence for strong analogies in growth responses between fieldgrown tubers and microtubers. The use of microtuber technology in seed tuber production, breeding programs, germplasm conservation, and research appears to have enormous potential. This review discusses microtuber production, yield and performance,in vitro screening, and germplasm storage and exchange.

In order to identify effects of nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) on soil nitrogen morphological characteristics and grain yield of oil flax, a two-factor experiment was conducted in a randomized complete block design in typical semi-arid and hilly-gully area of Loess Plateau with 3 replicates in 2013 and 2014. Two levels of N application included 150 kg/hm2 (N2) and 75 kg/hm2 (N1). P application included 150 kg P2O5/hm2 (P2) and 75 kg P2O5/hm2 (P1). Temporal and spatial variation of soil nitrate nitrogen (NO3−-N) and ammonium nitrogen (NH4+-N) contents in 0–60 cm soil layer, and relationship between soil NO3−-N accumulation (SNA) and grain yield of oil flax were analyzed. Results showed that SNA increased with evaluated N application rate in different soil layers (0–20 cm, 20–40 cm and 40–60 cm). With the increased P application, SNA increased at N1 level but decreased at N2 level. SNA under N2P1 treatment increased by 73.33% in 2013 and 74.97% in 2014 respectively, compared with control treatment (CK) at maturity stage. Grain yield of oil flax also increased by 44.27% in 2013 and 56.55% in 2014, compared with CK under the same treatment. Correlation analysis showed that SNA in different soil layers were respectively positively correlated with grain yield. In conclusion, this research suggested that the optimal fertilizer application rate was 150 kg N/hm2 and 75 kg P2O5/hm2 in the Northwest of China.

Summary The sandy and sandy peat soils of the northeast of The Netherlands are mineralogically very poor and acid. Independently of
potato cyst nematode infestations, there is a considerable negative effect of increasing soil pH on potato tuber yield. Potato
cyst nematode infections aggravate the effect of soil pH in depressing yield. It was shown that both potato cyst nematode
infection and increasing soil pH values reduce the buffering capacity of the root system. Testing for yield as well as for
tolerance to potato cyst nematode infection should be made at a range of soil pH values, similar to those found in the target
area. This refers to active breeding programmes as well as to the selection of cultivars for yield trials.

Potato stolbur is a phytoplasmal disease that seriously affects yield and tuber quality in South Eastern Europe, Russia and
the Mediterranean areas. In 2007 and 2008, field experiments were carried out to determine stolbur resistance of processing
potato cultivars at Sannicolau Mare (Romania) by determining consistency and concentration of reducing sugars (fructose and
glucose), sucrose and phytoplasmas in potato tubers. In both years, non-symptomatic potato tubers showed sucrose levels in
the range of 3,000 mg kg−1 fresh weight (FW). In contrast, sucrose concentrations were up to 11,820 mg kg−1 FW in 2007 and 19,560 mg kg−1 FW in 2008 in tubers showing severe symptoms. These high values severely affect suitability of tubers for processing as sucrose
serves as substrate for the formation of reducing sugars that are the limiting factor in fried potato production for Maillard-related
discolouration. The cultivars examined differed considerably in susceptibility to stolbur disease. Whereas cvs. ‘Courage’
and ‘Lady Rosetta’ showed high numbers of diseased tubers and high sucrose concentrations, ‘Lady Claire’ had a lower incidence
of symptomatic tubers and lower sucrose concentrations. However, fully resistant cultivars were not observed. Across all cultivars
examined, phytoplasmal concentration was significantly higher in symptomatic tubers than in non-symptomatic ones.

Summary Data from five long-term field experiments on sandy and sandy peat soils were analyzed for the effect of soil type on damage
caused by potato cyst nematodes to potato crops. It was shown that the water retention of the topsoil and the subsoil largely
determined the potential yield level in the different fields. According to Oostenbrink's equation the slopes of the curves
are steeper with increasing yield level, indicating that the higher the potential yield level, the higher the absolute yield
loss. However, when yield was expressed as percentage of maximum yield, yield reduction related to potato cyst nematode density
did not differ significantly, except when tolerant cultivars were grown. Increasing tolerance of cultivars to nematode damage
was reflected in less steep slopes of the yield/nematode density curves.

Summary Ware potatoes were produced from true potato seed by transplanting seedlings to the field in different growing periods to
evaluate environmental constraints of this production method in the Nile delta. In the autumn season, with high temperatures
and long-day conditions during seedling culture in the nursery and transplant establishment in the field, seedling development
was fast, and transplants resumed growth within 5 days of transplanting in the field. Tuber yields ranged between 120 and
160 dt ha−1. In the spring season, with low temperatures and short-day conditions during the initial growing phase, seedling development
in the nursery was slow and biomass partitioning between above ground organs (stems, leaves) and tubers was shifted towards
the tubers. This partitioning was further enhanced by transplanting the seedlings in the field. Seedlings recovered only slowly
from transplanting or died.
It is concluded that potato production via transplants is poor in the spring season when premature tuberization of seedlings
in the nursery leads to slow field establishment and low tuber yield.
