To investigate whether drought tolerance of individual trees can be increased through the provision of more growing space,
trees from a thinning experiment were analysed for reductions in radial growth during drought years and their subsequent recovery.
Tree-ring widths were quantified on increment cores as well as stem discs of 32 trees from stands of a thinning trial established
in 1974 in 27-year-old spruce stands in the Alpine Foreland of Southwest Germany. Three different thinning regimes of the
trial were selected for this study: unthinned control (8 trees), moderate (13 trees) and heavy thinning (11 trees) intensities.
All trees sampled were of a co-dominant to dominant canopy status. The standardisation of growth data was carried out using
the software program ARSTAN (University of Arizona). For the year 1976—a widespread and severe drought year in Germany—we
found year ring widths were not reduced compared to those of the pre-drought years for all treatments. However, we observed
the formation of false year rings and resin ducts for this year in all trees investigated. The drought events in 1992 and
2003 led to severe growth depressions in the year of the drought event in all trees, regardless of previous thinning regimes.
However, the resilience—the recovery of basal area growth in subsequent years—was significantly more rapid in trees from heavily
thinned stands, even if the drought event occurred more than 10 years after the last thinning intervention. This indicates
a shorter stress period for trees with more growing space, which may reduce the susceptibility to secondary pathogens or pest
species such as bark beetles. 相似文献

Understanding the relationship between tree height (H) and diameter at breast height (D) is vital to forest design, monitoring and biomass estimation. We developed an allometric equation model and tested its applicability for unevenly aged stands of moso bamboo forest at a regional scale. Field data were collected for 21 plots. Based on these data, we identified two strong power relationships: a correlation between the mean bamboo height (H m) and the upper mean H (H u), and a correlation between the mean D (D m) and the upper mean D (D u). Simulation results derived from the allometric equation model were in good agreement with observed culms derived from the field data for the 21 stands, with a root-mean-square error and relative root-mean-square error of 1.40 m and 13.41 %, respectively. These results demonstrate that the allometric equation model had a strong predictive power in the unevenly aged stands at a regional scale. In addition, the estimated average height–diameter (H–D) model for South Anhui Province was used to predict H for the same type of bamboo in Hunan Province based on the measured D, and the results were highly similar. The allometric equation model has multiple uses at the regional scale, including the evaluation of the variation in the H–D relationship among regions. The model describes the average H–D relationship without considering the effects caused by variation in site conditions, tree density and other factors. 相似文献

The spatial dynamics of soil water-recharge in a forest stand is the product of a number of interacting processes. This study focuses on the role of tree species and antecedent soil water content upon horizontal and vertical patterns of soil water recharge in heavy clay soils of a mixed European beech–Norway spruce stand and of a pure Norway spruce stand after rewetting periods with different rain quantities and intensities. Volumetric water content (VWC) was measured at 194 locations across 0.5-ha plots in each stand using time-domain reflectometry (TDR) with fixed 30- and 60-cm vertical waveguides. This was repeated 28 times (as close as possible) before and after rewetting periods during the vegetation seasons in 2000 and 2001. In addition, the locations of all trees within the plots were recorded. Geostatistics was used to describe the spatial correlation between VWC measurements and to interpolate soil water recharge in space. Spatial patterns of soil water recharge were then evaluated according to antecedent soil water-content and tree species distribution. Open-field precipitation of 30 mm (maximum intensity 10 mm h–1) on extremely dry initial soil conditions resulted in higher subsoil (30–60 cm soil depth) recharge and erratic recharge patterns. This was presumably due to preferential flow in opening shrinkage cracks of the heavy clay soil. A comparable quantity and intensity of rainfall under moderately dry antecedent soil water conditions resulted in almost exclusively topsoil (0–30 cm soil depth) water recharge and patterns of recharge that were clearly related to tree species distribution. The higher recharge around beech trees can be attributed to the lower interception rates there. Spatial patterns of soil water recharge reflect patterns of antecedent soil water conditions. 相似文献

Abstract The biology of two important lepidopterous pests, Prays oleae Bernard and Palpita unionalis Hübner, was studied. The target pests were reared on olive plants, Oleae europaea L. (Oleaceae) under laboratory conditions for two successive generations, from March to June 2002. For P. oleae, the duration of larval stage development in the first generation was 21.4 ± 0.18 days at 19.3–20.9 °C, 65–68 % R.H, while in the second generation it was 14.8 ± 0.10 days at 20.8–24.2 °C, 65–69 % R.H. The number of eggs laid per female ranged from 58 to 109 eggs in the first generation, and from 47 to 113 in the second. The larval stage duration of P. unionalis was 16.3 ± 0.12 days at 16.8–22.9 °C, 65–69 % R.H. and 15.5 ± 0.12 days at 21.6–25.5 °C, 66–69 % R.H. for the first and second generations, respectively. Also, the number of eggs laid per female ranged from 630 to 653 eggs, and from 425 to 493 eggs in the second generation under the same previous laboratory conditions. P. oleae laid eggs at night mostly singly on flower-buds, more on the calyx. than on the petals. The larvae mined on leaves and damaged groups of flowers. P. unionalis adults were active at night, laid eggs singly at twilight usually on the lower surface of foliage. Larvae fed on leaves spinning several leaves together to form shelter for the pupa. 相似文献

Key messageTrees with otherwise equal dimensions have different leaf areas if they are located in different stand types. While leaf area of European larch is affected by mixture proportion, leaf area of Norway spruce is affected by stand density.ContextLeaf area is a key parameter for evaluating growth efficiency of trees, and therefore needs to be measured as consistently and accurately as possible. This is even more important when comparing monospecific and mixed stands.AimsThe aim of the study is to find combinations of parameters and allometric relationships that can be used to estimate accurately the leaf area of individual trees.MethodsAllometries of the measured leaf area of 194 trees in 12 stands were analysed in order to find variables affecting leaf area. Existing functions from the literature were validated. Finally, models were fitted to find the most appropriate method for estimating leaf area of mixed and monospecific stands of Norway spruce and European larch.ResultsAllometric relationships of leaf area to other measurable characteristics of trees vary in different stand types. Besides individual tree dimensions such as diameter and crown surface area, leaf area of Norway spruce is related to stand density, whereas the leaf area of European larch is dependent on the admixture of Norway spruce in the stand.ConclusionIn contrast to models for estimating individual tree leaf area of Norway spruce, models for leaf area of European larch have to consider mixture proportions in order to correctly interpret the growth efficiency of mixed stands.9.

Due to the expected increases of number and intensity of summer droughts in Central Europe the identification of drought tolerant
ecotypes becomes more important in future forestry. A common garden experiment with seedlings of Fagus sylvatica provenances from the center (Germany) and eastern margin (Poland) of the species’ distribution range was conducted. Responses
of morphological, physiological, chemical and growth parameters to three drought treatments were analyzed. Relative growth
rates of the marginal provenance were lower as compared to the central provenance. The marginal seedlings showed a tendency
to higher total biomasses because of higher seed masses. In both provenances drought decreased biomass production and root/shoot
ratio which was lower in the central provenance. A lower specific root area of the marginal provenance indicated a better
adaptation to low xylem water potentials. Under moderate drought, lower leaf δ13C signatures may indicate lower stomatal limitation (or a reduced rate of CO2 assimilation) in the marginal provenance. We conclude that marginal beech provenances may exhibit a better drought adaptation. 相似文献

To elucidate mechanisms regulating ascorbic acid (AsA) biosynthesis and accumulation in the fruit and leaves of black currants, AsA and the activities of key enzymes in the ascorbate–glutathione (AsA–GSH) cycle were measured from fruit set to fruit ripening during fruit thinning treatments of three common commercial black currant cultivars that differed in their AsA levels: ‘Risager’ (low), ‘Brodtrop’ (medium) and ‘Adelinia’ (high). Treatments were 50% fruit reduction (50% of total fruit set) by hand, control was no thinning. Fruit thinning treatment significantly increased AsA content in fruit of all three cultivars from weeks 2 to 8, significantly decreased AsA content in leaves from weeks 3 to 8. Dehydroascorbate reductase and monodehydroascorbate reductase activities in fruit and leaves had a similar pattern, increasing during week 2, rose until they peaked in week 4. Ascorbate peroxidase activity in fruit in the thinning treatment was slightly lower than in the control. Fruit thinning was shown to be a good model to test AsA biosynthesis regulation and accumulation in black currants. The results from our study provided strong evidence that AsA–GSH cycle involved in AsA synthesis and accumulation in fruit. 相似文献

This report describes in vitro shoot induction and plant regeneration from nodal segments of Balanites aegyptiaca on Murashige and Skoog (MS) medium fortified with 6-benzyladenine (BA), thidiazuron (TDZ) and kinetin (Kin) (0.5–20.0 μM).
MS medium supplemented with BA (12.5 μM) was the most effective in inducing bud break and growth and also in initiating multiple
shoot proliferation. However, the optimal level of TDZ supplementation to the culture medium was 5.0 μM. Shoot cultures were
established by repeatedly subculturing the original nodal explants on the same medium. Highest number of shoots (11.5 ± 0.7)
and shoot length (5.0 ± 0.2 cm) were achieved when cultures were subcultured on MS medium supplemented with 12.5 μM BA and
1.0 μM α-naphthalene acetic acid (NAA). The shoots regenerated from TDZ supplemented medium when subcultured to hormone free
MS basal medium considerably increased the rate of shoot multiplication and shoot length by the end of fifth subculture. Rooting
of the shoots was achieved on MS medium augmented with 1.0 μM indole-3-butyric acid (IBA) plus 0.5% activated charcoal followed
by their transfer to half strength MS basal medium. The in vitro raised plantlets with well developed shoots and roots were
successfully established in earthen pots containing garden soil and were grown in greenhouse with 70% survival rate. The results
of this study provide the first successful report on in vitro direct plant regeneration of B. aegyptiaca. 相似文献

This work verifies the development threshold of the pupal stage of L. serricorne whose larva fed exclusively on dried tobacco leaves. In previous work, using the thermal constant equation, this threshold was found to be 13.8 °C and the thermal constant to range from 89.05 to 94.05 day-degrees (°C). Lower temperatures, 10.5±0.5, 11.5±0.5 and 12.5±0.5 °C, close to this threshold, were tested in the absence of light and at a relative humidity of 65±3% . It was found that no development of either larva or pupa exists below this threshold 相似文献

• Background and purposeA complex interplay between biotic and abiotic factors is believed to be responsible for several oak declines in pedunculate oak (Quercus robur L.). This study aims to clarify the temporal process of oak declines, as well as identifying individual tree and environmental variables that affects growth rate and that may increase the risk of mortality. The study was performed in southern Sweden at three sites. 相似文献17.

Growth and physiological performance of multipurpose tree species can be severely constrained by low phosphorus (P) availability
in highly weathered soils. Limitations to plant growth are accentuated by seasonal dry periods. The overall objective of this
study was to examine P fertilization and irrigation effects on survival, growth, biomass partitioning, foliar nutrients, intrinsic
water-use efficiency (WUE) indexed by δ13C, Rhizobium nodulation, and carbohydrate content as an indicator of resprouting potential, of mimosa (Albizia julibrissin Durz.), a N2-fixing tree species being tested for browse in agroforestry practices in south-central USA. In a field experiment carried
out during two growing seasons near Booneville, Arkansas, USA, mimosa had a strong growth response to irrigation. The trial
was arranged in a split plot design with three replications with irrigation as main plot treatment and P as sub-plot treatment.
Mean total plant aboveground biomass at the end of the second growing season was 9.8 and 44.1 g plant−1 for the rainfed treatment without and with 300 mm of irrigation water, respectively. Placed P fertilization increased mean
total aboveground biomass from 19 g plant−1 for the 0-P treatment to 69 g plant−1 for the treatment with 90 kg P ha−1 year−1. Similarly, irrigation consistently increased stem basal diameter, total height, survival, root, stem, foliar and total aboveground
biomass, and number of nodules per plant. Phosphorus fertilization increased basal diameter, and root and stem biomass in
both irrigation treatments, survival and nodulation in the rainfed treatment, and foliar and total aboveground biomass in
the rainfed +300 mm irrigation treatment. There was a decrease of foliar δ13C suggesting that WUE decreased with P fertilization. In a pot experiment, seedlings were subjected to a factorial combination
of two irrigation treatments and six P levels in a randomized complete block design. Irrigation increased basal diameter,
root, stem, foliar and total biomass, leaf area and nodulation, whereas P fertilization (i.e., levels from 0 to 3.68 g P kg−1 soil) had similar effect in all the above variables except foliar biomass. Foliar P concentration to obtain 90% of the maximum
total plant biomass (critical level) was estimated at 0.157%. Total nonstructural and water soluble carbohydrate, and starch
concentrations increased non-linearly with irrigation and P addition suggesting impaired re-growth potential after defoliation
of seedlings with reduced water supply and at low soil P availability. Results of this study indicated strong limitations
for growth and regrowth potential of mimosa on a highly weathered soil with very low P availability and seasonal water content
shortages. Placed (i.e., near the plant base) application of P appeared to be a good strategy to fertilize perennial woody
plants. 相似文献

Long-term (40 years) effects of two soil amelioration techniques [NPKMgCa fertilization + liming; combination of PKMgCa fertilization,
liming, tillage, and introduction of lupine (Lupinus polyphyllus L.)] on chemical topsoil properties, stand nutrition, and stand growth at two sites in Germany (Pfaffenwinkel, Pustert) with
mature Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.) forest were investigated. Both sites are characterized by base-poor parent material, historic N and P depletion by intense
litter-raking, and recent high atmospheric N input. Such sites contribute significantly to the forested area in Central Europe.
Amelioration resulted in a long-term increase of pH, base saturation, and exchangeable Ca and Mg stocks in the topsoil. Moreover,
significant losses of the forest floor in organic carbon (OC) and nitrogen stocks, and a decrease of the C/N ratio in the
topsoil were noticed. The concentrations and stocks of OC and N in the mineral topsoil increased; however, the increases compensated
only the N, but not the OC losses of the forest floor. During the recent 40 years, the N nutrition of the stands at the control
plots improved considerably, whereas the foliar P, K, and Ca concentrations decreased. The 100-fascicle weights and foliar
concentrations of N, P, Mg, and Ca were increased after both amelioration procedures throughout the entire 40-year period
of investigation. For both stands, considerable growth acceleration during the recent 40 years was noticed on the control
plots; the amelioration resulted in an additional significant long-term growth enhancement, with the NPKMgCa fertilization
liming + being more effective than the combination of PKMgCa fertilization, liming, tillage, and introduction of lupine. The
comprehensive evaluation of soil, foliage, and growth data revealed a key relevance of the N and P nutrition of the stands
for their growth, and a change from initial N limitation to a limitation of other growth factors (P, Mg, Ca, and water). 相似文献
