Swards of Phalaris aquatica-Trifolium subterraneum were subjected to four defoliation treatments—zero, low (11 sheep ha−1) and high (22 sheep ha−1) stocking rates, and weekly cutting. At high stocking rate the annual grass Hordeum leporinum dominated while clover was dominant at low and zero stocking rates. Weekly cutting suppressed species other than clover and so failed to simulate grazing.
There were similarities in net herbage production between zero and lightly grazed swards and between heavily grazed and repeatedly cut swards. Net herbage production decreased in the order undisturbed sward < lightly grazed sward < heavily grazed sward < repeatedly cut sward.
When sheep grazed swards where herbage mass was low their daily consumption of herbage, and therefore liveweight change, depended on their recent grazing experience. Sheep accustomed to swards where herbage mass was low ate more because they grazed for much longer each day than unaccustomed sheep, although they selected a diet of similar digestibility.  相似文献

Comparative herbage characteristics and sheep production (ewes and lambs until weaning and lambs thereafter) from swards of Aurora (very early flowering), Frances (early flowering), Talbot (intermediate flowering) and Melle (late flowering) varieties of perennial ryegrass ( Lolium perenne ) were studied under a continuous variable stocking management based on sward surface height guidelines. The varieties were assessed as grass-only (215 kg N ha−1 fertilizer) and grass/clover (83 kg N ha−1 fertilizer) pastures.
Over 2 years (1985-86) total annual lamb production per hectare from grass-only swards of Aurora was 19% more than that from Frances despite similar herbage productivity. Differences between the varieties in lamb output were more pronounced as grass/clover swards, with Aurora producing 29 and 18% more lamb than Melle and Talbot respectively and with Frances also giving 16% more than Melle. Overall lamb production from grass/clover swards was 10% more than that from the grass-only pastures, mainly due to 69% advantage in individual lamb growth rates after weaning. Herbage organic matter digestibility, during the post-weaning period, was higher on grass/clover than on grass-only swards, and similarly with Aurora versus the other varieties. Under a frequent cut simulated grazing regime the relative herbage productivity of the four varieties differed, with Aurora 13% less productive than Frances.
The results are discussed in relation to the limitations of assessing performance under cutting, and the significance of the interaction in animal productivity between the two sward types.  相似文献

The use of sward height as a criterion for determining the time and extent of stocking-rate changes on continuously grazed swards was investigated over a 2-year period (1985–86) in a sheep production experiment. Swards of three contrasting perennial ryegrass ( Lolium perenne L.) varieties were established with and without Aberystwyth S184 small-leaved white clover ( Trifolium repens L.) at an upland site (310–363 m) in mid-Wales. From spring (late April) until weaning (mid-July) the pastures were continuously stocked with Beulah Speckled Face ewes and Suffolk cross lambs. During this period sward heights of 4 ± 0.5 cm were obtained and maintained by regular adjustment of animal number on individual paddocks. Grass-only swards received 160 and 200 kg N ha−1 and the grass clover swards were given 80 and 75 kg N ha−1 in 1985 and 1986 respectively.
Differences were observed between the treatments in sward height profiles over the season necessitating contrasting adjustments to stocking rates. Mean stocking rate necessary on early flowering Aurora (22 6 ewes ha−1) was respectively 27% and 17% higher than on late-flowering Aberystwyth S23 and Meltra (tetraploid) ryegrasses; mean stocking rate on grass-only swards was 19% higher than on the grass-clover pastures.
It is concluded that sward height is a useful criterion on which to make adjustments to stocking rates to compare the potential performance of contrasting swards, under continuous grazing. The infrequent adjustments required to maintain a constant sward height, especially on the late flowering diploid perennial ryegrass variety on which many upland pastures are based, suggest that the criterion of sward height could be successfully employed on farms as an aid to efficient grazing management.  相似文献

A study was conducted to determine the influence of a change in herbage mass on rates of herbage growth (G), senescence (S) and net production of green herbage (NP) in swards of Lolium perenne L., Poa annua L. and Trifolium repens L. under continuous stocking with sheep. Swards were maintained at either high (1700–1900 kg OM ha−1; H) or low (700–900 kg OM ha−1; L) herbage mass from April to 20 August. From 20 August to 13 September half of the L sward was permitted to grow until a herbage mass similar to that of the H sward was achieved (LH), and at the same time half of the H sward was grazed down until a herbage mass similar to that of the L sward was achieved (HL). The other half of each sward was held at constant mass (LL and HH). Estimates of G, S and NP were obtained for each plant species over a 2-week period from 17 September to 1 October and estimates of species population densities were also made.
The combined species rates of G and S per unit area were highest in treatment LH and lowest in treatment HL, whilst the rates for the LL and HH swards were intermediate. The rate of NP was similar in the LL, HH and LH treatments (34.5, 29.3, 33.6 ± 6.2 kg DM ha−1d−1) but was lower in the HL sward (100 ± 6.2). The effects of alteration of herbage mass on individual tiller or stolon G and S rates were rapid but population density changes were slower.
Within the limited conditions of this trial it was not possible to increase NP by manipulation of herbage mass under continuous stocking management but the results indicate that NP can be reduced in the short term if a sward of high herbage mass and low population density is grazed hard.  相似文献

A study was conducted to determine the influence of herbage mass under continuous stocking management with sheep on rates of herbage growth (G), senescence (S) and net production of green herbage (NP) in a mixed-species sward of Lolium perenne. Poa annua and Trifolium repens. Plots were maintained in as nearly constant herbage mass as possible at 500, 700, 1000 and 1700 kg organic matter (OM) ha−1 by continuous but variable stocking with sheep for the period May to July inclusive. Estimates of G, S and NP were obtained for each species from repeated measurements over two 2-week periods on individually identified grass tillers or clover stolons. Estimates of species population densities enabled estimates of G. S and NP per unit area to be made.
Rates of G were higher and of S were lower for Lolium tillers and Trifolium stolons than for Poa tillers. The laminae of Poa tillers occupied inferior positions in the canopy of the swards maintained at higher herbage masses and were less accessible to the grazing animals, so that Poa tissue was less well utilized.
The total population densities of tillers and stolons declined at herbage masses both above and below 700 kg OM ha−1. The rate of G for the three species combined increased with herbage  相似文献

The effects of stocking rate and N fertilizer on a mixed sward of perennial ryegrass ( Lolium perenne) and white clover ( Trifolium repens ) set-stocked with sheep were examined. Sward production and composition, and sheep production were studied.
Increasing the stocking rate over the range 25–55 yearling sheep ha−1 reduced herbage accumulation by about 40%, whether or not N fertilizer was applied. Increasing the stocking rate increased the density of ryegrass tillers, but reduced the density of clover stolons and the clover content of the swards. Applications of N fertilizer (200 kg N ha−1 a−1) increased herbage accumulation by about 20% but substantially reduced the clover content.
Liveweight gain per animal and per unit area were greater at the lower stocking rates where the clover content and nutritive value of the diet were greatest. Wool growth per unit area was greater at the higher stocking rates. Applications of 1M fertilizer increased liveweight gain at stocking rates above 25 sheep ha−1, but had no effect on wool production at any stocking rate.
The results demonstrate that a stable and productive grass-clover association was maintained under conditions of set-stocking at around 23 yearling sheep ha−1and that at this stocking rate, which appears to be about the biological optimum, there was no advantage in using N fertilizer.  相似文献

The potential productivity of perennial ryegrass/ white clover swards (GC) under continuous stocking management was assessed by comparing their performance, when grazed by sheep at sward surface heights of 3, 6 and 9 cm, with that of an all–grass sward (G) maintained at 6 cm and fertilized with 420 kg N ha–1 The grass/clover swards received no nitrogen fertilizer. The different grazing treatments had a marked effect on animal performance. In the first year for example, for treatments GC3, GC6, GC9 and G6–420 respectively, mean stocking rates to weaning were 19–7, 14–3, 8–9 and 18–4 ewes ha–1 (plus twin lambs); lamb growth rates were 223, 268, 295 and 260 g d–1and so total lamb live weight gain was 1054, 920, 630 and 1148 kg h a–1. The relative performance of the treatments was similar in all three years. All three grazing treatments had a similar effect on the composition of the grass/clover swards. Clover content increased in 1985, and was sustained in 1986 and 1987 during the main grazing season, although a marked decline in clover content during the winter led to a progressive long–term decline in both the proportion and the amount of clover.
It is suggested that a management based on maintaining a sward surface height close to 6 cm (as in all–grass swards) leads to optimum performance in grass/white clover swards grazed using continuous stocking with sheep. Despite the presence of a small and declining clover content, the output of the mixed grass/clover sward managed in this way was 80%, 80% and 82% of that of a grass sward supplied with 420 kg N ha–1 in 1985, 1986, and 1987 respectively and, similarly, 83% of the output in 1987 of a grass sward receiving 210 kg N ha–1.  相似文献

The contribution of four classes of sward height to daily herbage growth rates of a heterogeneous sward in eight periods throughout a grazing season was investigated in two continuous cattle-grazing systems differing in intensity (moderate stocking rate: MC; lenient stocking rate: LC). At the beginning and end of periods of 12 to 28 d, the compressed sward height (CSH) was measured in exclusion cages at eighteen fixed points per cage to derive daily growth rates for the four classes of sward height. Stratified calibrations were made to relate sward height to herbage mass for each treatment in each period. Quadratic regressions described the relationship between herbage growth rate and initial CSH for each treatment in each period. For scaling up to the scale of the plot, CSH was measured monthly at 100 points per plot. Daily herbage growth rates declined from more than 100 kg dry matter (DM) ha−1 d−1 on both treatments at the beginning of the grazing season to 20 kg DM ha−1 d−1 or less, especially on treatment LC. This was due to the larger area covered by tall herbage on treatment LC than on treatment MC. On treatment MC, daily herbage growth rate was predominantly derived from short sward areas of up to 12 cm in height while sward areas taller than 12 cm contributed most to daily growth rates on treatment LC in early summer. The method used is considered suitable for estimating daily herbage growth rates of different classes of sward height in extensively managed pastures and can easily be adapted to deal with more heterogeneous swards than used in this study.  相似文献

Over three grazing seasons (1984-1986) a sward of perennial ryegrass, cv. Talbot, which received a total of 336 kg N ha-1 each season, was cut or grazed with ewes at 3- or 4-week intervals on a rotational basis.
Sward productivity was higher under cutting than under grazing irrespective of the interval between defoliations. Under cutting, mean herbage organic matter (OM) yields over both intervals were 8·66, 9·62 and 8·17 t ha-1 in 1984, 1985 and 1986 respectively while under grazing the corresponding yields were 7·65, 8·63 and 7·50 t ha-1. The mean annual yield of herbage defoliated at 3-week intervals was 7·50, 8·64 and 7 ·20 t OM ha-1 compared with 8·80, 9·60 and 8·46 t OM ha-1 for swards defoliated at 4-week intervals in the three years respectively.
The nitrogen (N) content of both the available and the residual herbage was consistently higher under grazing than under cutting. Available herbage contained 31·3 and 27·7 g N kg OM-1 and residual herbage 26·1 and 22·7 g N kg OM-1 under grazing and cutting respectively.
The mean yield of N under cutting was 284 kg ha-1 compared with 304 kg ha-1 under grazing. Defoliation interval had no effect on N yield, the overall mean yield being 294 kg ha-1 under both 3- and 4-week defoliation intervals. The effect of the treatments on tiller population was slight and inconclusive.
The process of grazing reduced yield probably as a result of damage to the sward through trampling; the positive effect of excretal N on yield was minimal on account of the short grazing periods.  相似文献

Over a 24-week period, three groups of dairy cows were continuously stocked at 8, 10 or 12 cows ha-1 between morning and afternoon milkings, and overnight were housed and offered grass silage ad libitum. Due to a prolonged drought, sward heights only averaged 4·1 cm.
The increase in daytime stocking rate led to a decline in herbage intake, and increases in silage intake. At the highest stocking rate (12 cows ha-1), the silage intake failed to compensate for the reduced herbage intake. Consequently the total dry matter and estimated metabolizable energy intakes were lower than for the 8 and 10 cows ha-1 treatments. Milk yields and milk composition were not significantly affected by treatment but the 12 cows ha-1 stocking rate gave the lowest milk and milk solids yields.
The utilized metabolizable energy (UME) on the grazed swards was greatest for the 10 cows ha-1 treatment. The sward cut to provide the silage had a UME level (GJ ha-1) 32% greater on average than the grazed swards during the same growth period. The total areas utilized for grazing and silage production for 8, 10 and 12 cows ha-1 were 0·240, 0·224 and 0·215 ha respectively. A comparison was made under continuous grazing between applying a high stocking rate in spring (H) to maintain the sward surface height (SSH) of a perennial ryegrass pasture at 5–6 cm and a low stocking rate (L) to maintain SSH at 10–12cm with mechanical topping in mid-June. The experiment was carried out in the dry season of 1989 and a lack of rainfall markedly affected the treatments and consequently animals were offered supplementary concentrate and forage in July to compensate for reduced grass intake and low SSHs.
Treatment H maintained the density of live grass tillers and live: dead tiller ratio in mid-and late season, compared with the L treatment. The measured interval between defoliation of individual grass tillers was significantly less in the L pasture in samplings taken between 2 May and 29 August. January/February calving cows on the L pasture produced significantly more milk cow−1 with higher concentrations of protein and lactose, but less milk ha−1 compared with cows on the H sward. The results indicate that topping of a laxly grazed sward in drought conditions has no positive effects on sward characteristics or milk production.  相似文献

Two experiments were conducted to examine the effect of inter-tussock grass height and stocking rate on the utilization of the rush ( Juncus effusus ) by grazing goats. In the first experiment, on rush-infested Festuca rubralTrifolium repens pasture, the utilization of rushes by goats grazing at a sward height of 3–4cm or 5–6cm was compared with that occurring on plots grazed by sheep at a sward height of 3–4 cm. Sheep grazed minimal amounts of rush. In contrast, it was estimated that 90% and 75% of current seasons growth of rush was grazed by goats at sward heights of 3–4 and 5–6 cm respectively during the first year. With continued goat grazing at 5–6cm there was a dramatic reduction in the cover and vigour of the rushes, and at a sward height of 3–4cm established tussocks were eliminated from the pasture.
The second experiment compared the utilization of rushes invading predominantly Agrostis swards stocked with goals at 10, 20 or 30 ha-1 and in which inter-tussock sward height was maintained at 4–5cm on all treatments, by adding or subtracting sheep. On one site rush utilization increased with the increase in stocking rate of goats and rush tussocks were eliminated within 3 years at 30 goats ha-1. On another, there was no difference between plots stocked at 20 or 30 goats ha-1 and viable tussocks remained. The influence of the composition and productivity of the inter-tussock herbage and the proportion of rush in the biomass are discussed.
Goats can be used lo control rushes in grassland but high stocking levels and low inter-tussock pasture heights are required to promote adequate levels of utilization.  相似文献

Three contrasting defoliation regimes for dairy cows—four cuts annually, severe rotational grazing and lax rotational grazing integrated with cutting—were compared in terms of herbage production, selection and intake per cow. Lax and severe grazing were compared simultaneously and grazing intensity was characterized by means of changes in herbage mass and sward height during grazing.
Herbage growth and yield were similar under cutting, severe grazing and lax grazing/cutting (120 t organic matter (OM) ha−1). Herbage quality and leaf production were highest with severe grazing, which also had a less marked seasonal pattern of growth. The herbage intake per cow was 111 kg OM d−1 with severe grazing and proportionately (0-20) higher at lax grazing/ cutting. 050 of the herbage yield was harvested by cutting at lax grazing/cutting. Selectivity was described with high certainly by the nutrient content prior to defoliation and by the degree of defoliation. Models to quantify this are presented.
Grazing intensity could be described by the size and degree of utilization of the fouled area, and herbage intake was quantified by means of herbage height before and after grazing. Within the range of 80-240 mm sward height prior to grazing, height measurements led to realistic and more accurate estimates than those obtained by measuring organic matter disappearance.
Herbage utilization was depressed significantly by increasing maturity of herbage due to lower nutritive value, but in particular due to reduced green leaf content and increased reproductive development. If sward height did not exceed 250 mm at any time, good utilization by grazing could be obtained.  相似文献

Two experiments (1a and 1b) were carried out to examine the effects of differences in pre-grazing herbage mass and composition on milk production by cows grazing in early spring. Swards with high (5 · 1t DM ha−1) or low (2 · 9 t DM ha-1) pre-grazing masses in early spring were created by either long or short periods of regrowth during the preceding winter.
The low-mass swards contained lower concentrations of grass stem and senescent material, but higher concentrations of clover, than the high-mass swards. Herbage from the low-mass swards was also more digestible.
Cows were offered common daily herbage allowances from both swards (26 and 22 kg DM cow−1 in Experiments la and lb respectively). The cows grazing on the low-mass swards produced significantly greater yields of milk, milk fat and milk protein.
The results show that herbage from the lowmass swards was of higher feeding value for lactating cows in early lactation. The practical implications for milk production per cow and per hectare are discussed.  相似文献

A comparison was made of stocking rates of 4·7, 5·6 and 6·4 cows ha-1 during the first 7 weeks (period 1) of the grazing season. Each group of British Friesian cows was continuously stocked on a day and a night field. In the subsequent periods 2 and 3 (each lasting 7 weeks) the three groups were maintained at the same stocking rate within periods (4·2 and 31 cows ha-1, respectively). The differential stocking rates were achieved by the addition and removal of cows.
The stocking rates applied in period I had no significant effects on milk yield, milk composition, liveweight change or condition score, in any period. Milk production ha-1 over the three periods totalled 12390,13 978 and 14986 kg, and the estimated utilized metabolizable energy totalled 773, 81·5 and 86·6 GJ ha-1 for low, medium and high stocking rates, respectively.
Increased stocking rate in period I was associated with a decrease in sward height in periods 1 and 2. This led to an increase in herbage metabolizable energy, and crude protein contents, and to an increase in tiller population density. The lowest stocking rate gave greater live individual tiller weights throughout the experiment and a longer interval between defoliation of individual tillers in period 1.
The results indicate that high stocking rates in the spring are not necessarily detrimental to overall summer performance of spring calving dairy cows. However, high stocking rates in the early season ensure a high level of herbage utilization and milk output ha-1 in that period. Although this practice leads to a reduced sward height in mid season, the sward has less rejected area, a higher tiller population density and a higher digestibility than swards stocked at a lower level.  相似文献

An experiment was carried out to compare the effects of two compressed sward height treatments, each at two fertilizer nitrogen (N) treatments (0 and 50 kg ha−1 in spring), on the date of turnout and liveweight gain of steers grazing a perennial ryegrass/white clover ( Lolium perenne/Trifolium repens ) sward sited on clay loam in south-west England. The sward height treatments were 6 cm all season, and 4 cm in the spring rising to 6 cm in June; these were maintained using continuously variable stocking with Hereford × Friesian steers. Cattle were turned out on average 11·5 days earlier on the 4-cm sward height compared with the 6-cm sward height treatment. Liveweight gain early in the season was lower on the 4-cm swards than on the 6-cm swards. Liveweight gain ha−1 over the whole season was similar for the two sward height treatments. Fertilizer N did not affect turnout date or liveweight gain.  相似文献

Masham ewes, stocked at 20 ewes ha−1, reared twins at pasture in 1979 and 1980 and were rotationally grazed around six paddocks. There were three lengths of grazing cycle (18, 30 or 42 d) and the ewes at pasture were either offered silage ad libitum (S) for 8 weeks of lactation or they were not supplemented with silage (N). By feeding silage, S ewes and lambs moved into greater herbage masses (3735 u. 3390 kg organic matter (OM) ha−1), but there was little effect on net herbage accumulation (10.5 v. 10.0 t OM ha−1) and herbage intakes per ewe were similar (2.31 v . 2.27 kg OM d−1) over the 7-month grazing season. During the period of silage supplementation, total intake was 19% higher for S than N ewes, lamb growth rates were slightly higher (280 v . 273 g d−1) and the ewes lost less weight (−78 v −96 g d−1).
For 18-, 30- and 42-d grazing cycles respectively the herbage masses before grazing were 2825, 3620 and 4240 kg OM ha−1; net herbage accumulations were 9.8, 10.4 and 10.6 t OM ha−1; mean daily herbage intakes by each unit (ewe+lambs) were 2.22, 2.35 and 2.30 kg OM and lamb growth rates from birth to weaning at 20 weeks were 205, 204 and 204 g d−1.
Frequent grazing of relatively light herbage masses or infrequent defoliation of heavier herbage masses made little difference to sward or animal performance. It is concluded that, at this stocking rate, different grazing cycles of 18, 30 or 42 d do not affect the performance of lactating ewes.  相似文献

An experiment was carried out in 1992 and 1993 to examine the effect of white clover content of perennial ryegrass/white clover swards on the performance of Limousin × Friesian heifers. Swards with low (L), medium (M) and high (H) white clover contents were established and managed by continuous variable stocking. A compressed sward height of 5·5 cm was maintained using a buffer fence to vary plot areas, with herbage surplus to grazing requirements cut, removed and yields measured. The mean white clover proportions for treatments L, M and H were 0·02, 0·19 and 0·18 in 1992 and 0·13, 0·16 and 0·31 in 1993 respectively. White clover contents of the swards reached a maximum in August and September, and differences between treatments diminished. There was no significant difference between treatments in the content of white clover in the swards in autumn 1993.
Liveweight gains of heifers increased asymptotically with increasing white clover content of the sward. Below a white clover herbage mass of 300 kg DM ha–1, there was little effect on liveweight gain, which was 0·70 kg day–1 over the grazing season. Between 400 and 450 kg DM ha–1 white clover, liveweight gains were 0·85–0·90 kg day–1. While clover content of the sward did not significantly affect utilized metabolizable energy output; the mean output over the grazing season in the two years from liveweight gain and herbage yield was 78 GJ ha–1. It is suggested that, using this grazing system, white clover reached an equilibrium with a mean herbage mass of about 400 kg DM ha–1 over the grazing season.  相似文献

The productivity of permanent swards of mixed species composition was compared with that of sown Lolium perenne , cv. Melle at five fertilizer-N rates (0, 150, 300, 450 and 900 kg N ha−1) and with L. perenne/Trifolium repens , cv. Grasslands Huia at 0 kg N ha−1. The investigation was conducted under two cutting frequencies at sixteen sites in England and Wales, representing a range of grassland environments.
Annual total herbage dry matter (DM) production from both permanent and reseeded swards increased with successive increments of fertilizer-N up to 450 kg N ha−1. Herbage DM production from reseeded swards in the first year after sowing was signficantly higher than from the permanent swards, at all fertilizer-N treatments. In subsequent years the production advantage of the L. perenne reseeds was maintained only at the higher N rates, though sown L. perenne/T. repens was the most productive sward type at 0 N. Average differences in modified acid-detergent fibre suggested small advantages in herbage quality to the reseeded swards.
It is concluded that, while reseeded swards are more productive in the year after sowing, many permanent swards are capable of high levels of production and that reseeding to a L. perenne sward cannot always be justified, particularly for grassland receiving low or moderate inputs of fertilizer-N.  相似文献

This experiment was carried out to study the responses of sward components (particularly white clover, Trifolium repens ) to grazing management in a natural sward dominated by smooth-stalked meadowgrass ( Poa pratensis ) syn. Kentucky bluegrass. Treatments during two grazing seasons (1989–90) were: cattle grazing alone (C); cattle grazing followed by topping (CT); cattle grazing followed by sheep grazing (CS); and sheep grazing alone (S). Mean target pre- and post-grazing herbage masses were 2200 and 1100 kg DM ha−1, estimated by single-probe electronic capacitance meter. Sward component dynamics were monitored using turf dissections, marked white clover stolons, and ring-toss white clover leaf counts. Component and sward data for the C, CT, CS and S treatments respectively, were: number of white clover leaves m−2, 1295, 1384, 1408, 900 (s.e. ± 108); number of leaves per growing point, 3·2, 3·4, 3·0, 2·8 (s.e. ± 0·2); herbage accumulation (t DM ha−1), 5·16, 5·02, 5·87, 8·28 (s.e. ±0 08); rejected herbage (% pasture area) 39·7, 7·7, 16·0, 0 (s.e. ± 75); and annual net herbage production (t DM ha−1) 3·39, 4·35, 4·99, 8·28 (s.e. ± 0.07). Swards grazed by sheep alone contained less white clover, but regrew quicker and produced more herbage than other treatments. Close topping or grazing by sheep following dairy cattle grazing decreased sward rejection by cattle. These treatments maintained more of the pasture in better condition for subsequent cattle grazing, resulting in greater net herbage production than where no post-cattle grazing treatment was used.  相似文献
