The rates of acetylation of Deal, Larch, Southern Yellow Pine and Sitka Spruce using acetic anhydride in xylene have been measured and compared with the composition of the woods. Although these woods have similar macroscopic characteristics, the correlation between rate of acetylation and composition remains unclear, although the holocellulose may play a role in converting the hydrophilic hydroxyl groups to hydrophobic acetyl groups. The rate of acetylation of Larch at 373 K was insignificant but the other wood samples showed significant acetylation at this temperature. The activation energies for the acetylation process suggest that several routes may be involved.  相似文献

Summary Elemental and functional group analyses were carried out on tissue fractions from the secondary wall and middle lamella of black spruce tracheids. The secondary wall lignin was found to contain 1.7 times as much methoxyl per C9 as the middle lamella lignin, indicating a substantial proportion of unmethylated para-hydroxyphenylpropane residues in the middle lamella. The content of carbonyl groups was at least three times larger in middle lamella lignin than in secondary wall lignin. The carboxyl content of the middle lamella was found to be about three times as large as that of the secondary wall. Elemental analyses show a higher carbon and lower oxygen content in the middle lamella than in the secondary wall.  相似文献

Summary Using a mechanical properties microprobe, measurements of hardness and elastic modulus of tracheid walls in the longitudinal direction of spruce wood were obtained by continuously measuring force and displacement as a diamond indenter impressed a cell wall. Maximum mechanical properties were found at the edges of the walls of angular shaped tracheids. Both the hardness and elastic modulus of latewood cell walls were higher than cell walls in the earlywood. The high spatial resolution of this new concept of mechanical testing allows a direct comparison with ultrastructural and microchemical parameters of lignified cells which opens a wider area of applications for the understanding of intrinsic wood properties.This work was conducted while the senior author was a Visiting Scientist at the Oak Ridge National Lab, Oak Ridge, TN 37831, USA partly with joint fundings from the Austrian Science Foundation (Schrödinger scholarship J799-BIO)  相似文献

The influences of cambial age and ring width on density of Sitkaspruce (Picea sitchensis (Bong.) Carr) were analysed in relationto within-tree trends in tracheid diameter and cell wall thickness.Discs were sampled at breast height from a total of 24 trees,from seven stands at three contrasting sites in Wales, and atbreast height, 30 per cent and 60 per cent total tree heightfrom one of the stands. Across the juvenile wood, ring density decreased with ring numberfrom the pith while radial tracheid diameter increased. Theseoverall trends were considered to be inherent to tree growth,presumably associated with cambial ageing, since they occurredin all trees on all sites. In juvenile wood, density also variedwith site growth rate (as indicated by ring width) at similarcambial age, wider rings being associated with more rapidrateof change in tracheid diameter with ring number and with decreasein tracheid wall thickness. Consequently, on a site having treeswith high growth rate density decreased more rapidly acrossthe juvenile wood, down to a lower minimum value, than on siteswith a slower growth rate. In mature wood, the decrease in densitywith increase in ring width was associated with differencesin both tracheid diameter and wall thickness. Density was slightly(though not significantly) higher at breast height than in comparablerings at 30 per cent total height, associated with significantlythicker tracheid walls at breast height. Changes in radial tracheid diameter (with ring number, or withring width) were associated with greater differences in theearlywood than towards the latewood end of each growth ring,while variations in wall thickness with ring width were associatedwith rate of increase in wall thickness towards the latewoodend. This may account for some previously conflicting reportson influence of silvicultural management on density, for densityis likely to vary with influence of environment on the seasonalcycle of cambial activity. The extent of the juvenile wood as delimited by the inner coreof wide growth rings does not necessarily correspond to theregion of varying tracheid dimensions in Sitka spruce.  相似文献

Summary Fine structure of cellulose microfibrils in poplar (Populus euramericana) gelatious layer and Valonia cell walls was observed in the electron microscope by using disintegration and ultrathin section techniques with various electron stains. Staining of the gelatinous layer in poplar showed that the microfibrils had a paracrystalline region surrounding a crystalline core, but such a region was negligible in Valonia. From the facts that kinks and shortened microfibrils were observed after mechanical and hydrolysis treatments, respectively, and that the microfibrils were unaffected by negative staining, it was concluded that the microfibril core is uniformly crystalline in the longitudinal direction although there may be some crystalline dislocations.The authors are indebted to Dr. Y. Lignin has been hypothesized to be the primary mechanism of resistance to fungal pathogens in plant tissue. Degradation of lignin and cellulose by Armillaria ostoyae cultured for six weeks in Melin-Norkrans medium containing various nitrogen and carbon sources was measured radiometrically. No consistent pattern of lignin or cellulose degradation was found, regardless of A. ostoyae isolate, nitrogen source and concentration, or carbon concentration. More lignin was degraded as the concentration of glucose and fructose increased but not when the concentration of sucrose increased.  相似文献

Summary Raman microprobe spectroscopy was used to study the concentration of lignocellulosics in the cell corner middle lamella. Spectra obtained from 1.6 m regions, from 30 cell corner middle lamellae of both birch and spruce, showed the presence of lignin. However, the relative concentration of lignin to cellulose varied considerably. These results corroborate the view expressed in previous reports of the need for caution in using the lignin concentration values of cell corner middle lamella as a internal reference for studying the variation of lignin concentration in other morphological regions of the cell wall, such as secondary cell wall layers.The use of trade or firm names in this publication is for reader information and does not imply endorsement by the U.S. Department of Agriculture of any product or service  相似文献

Lignin content in the cell wall was investigated to examine its relation with growth stress, using an ultraviolet microscopic spectrum analyzer. Although a weak correlation existed between the growth stress and lignin concentration in the compound middle lamella, it was believed that the compound middle lamella did not contribute to compressive growth stress generation as there was no correlation between growth stress and lignin concentration in the cell corner part of the intercellular layer. In the secondary wall, larger compressive growth stress was associated with higher lignin concentration especially in the outer part. This finding confirms that lignin contributes positively to the generation of compressive longitudinal growth stresses in the compression wood and more substantially in the outer part of the secondary wall. This experimental result strongly supports our hypothesis of growth stress generation given by the model.This paper was presented at the International Academy of Wood Science Meeting at Vancouver, Canada, July 1997  相似文献

We compared the chemical composition of wood fibres and fibre surfaces of several eucalypt species and hybrids originating from various growth sites in South Africa. The objective was to test for differences in chemical surface composition due to genetics or site with the ultimate aim to facilitate a tailor-made supply of wood for pulping that results in an optimal blend of fibres that can be pulped together with similar yields. This, however, requires a sound knowledge of the fibre properties. The surface functionality on the single fibre level is a key property, because it determines how good inter-fibre bonding will be when paper is formed, which depends amongst other fibre properties on the amount of free hydroxyl groups that are available and therefore on the cellulose content on the fibre surface. The cellulose and lignin content on the fibre surface were determined with chemical force microscopy, a variation of atomic force microscopy. Since the general bulk composition of the fibre and the surface composition might differ, both parameters were determined. We found significant differences in the cellulose and lignin content on fibre surfaces, with regard to genotype and site, respectively. In some, but not all, cases, the surface composition of wood fibres followed the bulk composition, and differences were generally more pronounced. Differences due to genotype were significant, especially with regard to the surface lignin content—but variation due to site was also distinctly recognisable. This variation in surface functionality could be the reason why some pulpwood blends result in a lower pulp yield and different quality.  相似文献

The effects of clear-cutting on the decomposition rate of leaf litter and on nitrogen (N) and lignin dynamics were investigated in a temperate secondary forest. Decomposition processes were examined over an 18-month period by the litterbag method and compared between a clear-cut site and an adjacent uncut control site using leaf litter from five dominant tree species (Clethra barvinervis, Quercus serrata, Camellia japonica, Ilex pedunculosa and Pinus densiflora). The decomposition rate for litter from C. barvinervis, Q. serrata and I. pedunculosa was significantly greater in the clear-cut plot than in the control plot, and there was no significant difference between plots for C. japonica and P. densiflora. Water content of litter was consistently lower in the clear-cut plot than in the control plot. Nitrogen mass increased after 6 months in the control plot, whereas no net increase of N was observed in the clear-cut plot. Nitrogen concentration increased with respect to accumulated mass loss of litter and was consistently lower in the clear-cut plot for all five species. The mass of lignin remaining in decomposing litter was generally lower in the clear-cut plot, but lignin concentration in decomposing litter was not significantly different between the clear-cut and control plots.  相似文献

Summary Radiata pine veneers and blocks were exposed to natural weathering under Australian summer conditions over a period of 30 days. Infrared spectroscopy revealed that there was perceptible surface delignification after 4 hours exposure, substantial surface delignification after 3 days exposure and almost complete surface delignification after 6 days. Rapid lignin degradation was also suggested by measurements of the acid insoluble lignin content of weathered veneers. Viscometry determinations on holocellulose samples from weathered veneers and unweathered controls indicated significant depolymerisation of cellulose after 4 days exposure. A tape test was used to assess the adhesion of acrylic latex primers to weathered blocks. The adhesion of exterior acrylic primers decreased on weathered wood surfaces and was significantly lower on specimens that were weathered for 5 to 10 days. An oil-modified acrylic primer showed greater adhesion to weathered wood surfaces. Primer adhesion was lower on weathered radial surfaces than on similarly exposed tangential surfaces. The practical implications of these findings for the coating of exterior wood with acrylic latex primers are discussed briefly.The authors wish to thank Dr. A. J. Abstract

Commercial thinning has recently been applied in the boreal forest of Quebec (Canada) to increase the volume growth of the residual trees. We aimed to discover if the growth response influences the transversal tracheid dimension of thinned black spruce (Picea mariana (Mill.) B.S.P.) and Jack pine (Pinus banksiana Lamb.) stands at 0.2 m stem height. All 20 studied stands have shown a significant growth response after the treatment (p<0.0001), especially trees with the lowest radial growth before thinning in comparison with the stand mean. Growing conditions met by suppressed trees before thinning might favour them in the competition for light, water and biomass production after the treatment. Trees with a positive growth response did not significantly modify their measured transversal tracheid dimension except for trees which increased twofold their ring-width after thinning. In this case, lumen area and radial cell diameter extended significantly. However individuals with a growth decrease after thinning registered significantly lower values in their ring width, earlywood and latewood cell numbers (p<0.0001) in both species.  相似文献
