Summary Potato crops in subtropical climates are often subjected to water stress, resulting in low yields and poor tuber quality. The yield response of potato genotypes to water supply was investigated in six trials, three each in spring and autumn plantings. Trials were conducted under automated rain shelters, using an irrigation boom to impose five soil water regimes. The negative effect of water stress on tuber yield was more detrimental in spring than in autumn, because of higher atmospheric evaporative demand and higher temperatures in spring. An average yield reduction of 68% was recorded for the most severely stressed regime in spring plantings, while the mean reduction for the same treatment in autumn was only 42%. Genotypic differences in yield response to drought were clearly illustrated in spring, but not in autumn. This suggests that the choice of genotypes is only influenced by the availability of water in spring, when more drought tolerant genotypes should be used.  相似文献

Summary Three experiments on intercopping potatoes with cabbage are reported in which the cabbage crop was transplanted between rows of potatoes prior to planting. The cabbages were removed before the canopies of the component crops overlapped, but comparison with sole crops showed that the ground cover of both crops had been retarded. This early competition affected both the amount of radiation intercepted by the potato crop and its efficiency of conversion into dry matter. As a result the sum of the radiation intercepted by the intercrops in no instance exceeded that of the sole potato crops. The evidence suggests that largely before any significant competition for light due to mutual shading, competition for water, nitrogen and possibly other essential elements, took place, with repercussions for canopy growth for the remainder of the growing season.  相似文献

Summary The duration of dormancy of seed potatoes varies between years and between origins. Therefore, the effects of conditions during crop growth on dormancy of progeny tubers were studied. The effect of nitrogen during tuber bulking on the duration of dormancy was investigated in three field experiments with two cultivars. In addition to an application of 125 kg N/ha at planting, top dressings of 0–150 kg N/ha were given about 2 weeks after tuber initiation. Haulm was pulled about 4 weeks later. The effect of nitrogen rate at planting was also examined in one experiment. Nitrogen top dressings shortened dormancy in all experiments by 5–8 days. An increased nitrogen rate at planting resulted in a shorter dormancy when the duration of dormancy was expressed in days after tuber initiation, but not when it was expressed in days after haulm pulling, probably because extra nitrogen also delayed tuber initiation.  相似文献

Summary In the chain of handling operations from harvesting to packaging inclusive, potatoes are exposed to many brief mechanical forces (impacts) and to long-term pressure. Impact and pressure can lead to subcutaneous tissue discoloration causing qualitative and quantitative losses. We investigated the characteristics of construction and utilization of representative Dutch ware potato handling chains and found that the number and height of drops appeared to be too high, the use of cushioning materials insufficient and the speed of the transporting parts too high and not in balance with each other. The contribution to the total amount of subcutaneous tissue discoloration was 16% for the harvesting to bin filling phases inclusive, 22% for the storage phase, 27% for the shovelling to truck loading phases inclusive and 35% for the truck unloading to packaging phases inclusive. These contributions varied considerably within phases and within links. The results can be used to develop equipment, upgrade present chains and design new, produce-frendly handling chains.  相似文献

Summary The tolerance of and resistance toGlobodera pallida of two potato progenies which segregated for these characteristics were assessed in pots in the glasshouse. The level of tolerance varied widely between genotypes within the progenies, with several genotypes being significantly more tolerant than the intolerant parent. The levels of resistance and tolerance in the progenies were not significantly correlated. No indications were obtained that the ranking of genotypes for tolerance is influenced by the density ofG. pallida in the soil. The results confirm that selection for tolerance in aG. pallida resistance breeding programme is useful and feasible.  相似文献

Summary The first large scale outdoor measurements of potato (Solanum tuberosum L.) stem water potential (SWP) usingin situ temperature-corrected stem psychrometers were performed on three cultivars common to Ontario, Canada (Atlantic, Monona and Norchip). Potato plants were examined under three soil water treatments which included rainfed, irrigated and stressed through the use of rain shelters. Cultivar variations in SWP under both irrigated and rainfed conditions were slight (P>0.05), although some significant (P<0.05) differences in mid-day SWP were evident, especially under conditions conducive to high atmospheric water demand. Under these conditions. cv. Atlantic maintained the lowest SWP with cv. Monona highest and cv. Norchip was intermediate. Few differences in pre-dawn SWP were detected between the three cultivars under well watered and rainfed conditions. Under low soil water, significant differences (P<0.05) were observed. The similar trend of Atlantic maintaining the lowest SWP with Monona the highest was consistent.  相似文献

Summary Potato plants (Solanum tuberosum L.) of the cultivars Alpha, Cara, Blanka, Désirée and Idit, were exposed to a transient water deficit during tuber growth. Drought stress increased the concentration of solutes as assessed by refractometry and lowered the osmotic potentials as assessed by cryoscopy in both leaf and tuber tissues of the five cultivars. Differences among cultivars, as well as between leaf and tuber tissue of the same cultivar, could indicate variability of the soluble components contributing to the osmotic potential. Differences were noted in the response of the cultivars to the environment in terms of osmotic potentials. Essentially, two types of responses were identified: transient maintenance of lower osmotic potential for 24–48 h after stress relief; and inherently high concentration of solutes and low osmotic potential. The possible advantage of sensitivity to environmental changes is also considered. Contribution from the Agricultural Research Organization, The Volcani Center, Bet Dagan, Israel. The aim of this work was to investigate whether the application of soluble chitosan in potato micropropagation can improve microplant quality in vitro, help acclimatisation ex vitro, and increase yield and seed quality of minitubers. Potato cv. Désirée microplants were treated in vitro with soluble chitosan added to the semisolid tissue culture medium in different concentrations. Microplants were subsequently transferred to the greenhouse and sprayed with chitosan solutions or remained unsprayed. Untreated microplants were also established ex vitro and sprayed with chitosan, or left unsprayed as a control. Morphological and physiological parameters of plant growth were assessed in vitro and ex vitro. Plantlet quality was evaluated using a ranking system. Minitubers derived from greenhouse plantlets were planted in the field in subtropical conditions, and growth and yield parameters evaluated. The chitosan concentration most beneficial to the in vitro growth of microplants varied between years. In treatments with the best in vitro growth, minituber number and yield in the greenhouse was also increased. Foliar chitosan application at the acclimatisation phase stabilised the effect of in vitro treatment on yield parameters. The seed quality of minitubers derived from chitosan treatments in vitro alone and in combination with foliar treatment at acclimatisation was improved, giving rise to field plants with increased tuber numbers and yields. The combination of chitosan in vitro and foliar application during the acclimatisation phase ex vitro had a greater effect on minituber seed quality than the concentration applied in vitro.  相似文献

Summary Soil in a potato field naturally infested with black dot (Colletotrichum coccodes) was fumigated with methyl bromide at 126 g m−2 or left unfumigated. Potato seed tubers (cv. BP1) uninfected, lightly infected (1–25% surface affected), severely infected (26–100% surface affected) and severely infected withC. coccodes but dusted with prochloraz manganese chloride as Octave 2.5% DP at 750 g per 100 kg seed were planted in fumigated and unfumigated soil. When harvested, the incidence of black dot on the progeny of infected seed planted in unfumigated soil was twice that of progeny in fumigated soil, with progeny of uninfected seed having a 68.5 times higher disease incidence in unfumigated soil. Black dot on progeny tubers was reduced by pre-treatment of seed with prochloraz in fumigated soil only. With black dot infested fields, planting disease-free seed or treating seed with fungicides would not decrease disease on progeny tubers.  相似文献

Shortening dormancy of seed potatoes by storage temperature regimes   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Summary Four experiments (three with four cultivars, one with twenty cultivars) investigated the effect of different storage temperature regimes on the duration of dormancy of seed potatoes harvested immature. Regimes included constant temperatures (18 and 28°C), hot pre-treatments (20 days at 28°C and subsequently 18°C) and cold pre-treatments (20 days at 2°C and subsequently 18°C). Compared with 18°C, storage at 28°C slightly prolonged dormancy of some cultivars with a genetically short dormancy and shortened dormancy by up to 45 days in cultivars with a long dormancy. Some tubers of one cultivar lost their ability to sprout after storage at 28°C for 90 days. A hot pre-treatment shortened dormancy by 2–3 weeks on average, for all cultivars examined. A cold pre-treatment shortened dormancy by 2 weeks on average in some cultivars with a short dormancy and in all cultivars with a long dormancy.  相似文献

Summary Potato plants of cvs Eersteling and Bintje were grown from stem cuttings and induced to form aerial tubers for use as seed. Spraying the plants with gibberellic acid in concentrations of 10, 25 and 50 mg/l to induce stolon formation in the leaf axils led to a decrease in the number of tubers formed per plant. Multiple harvesting of the largest tubers from plants treated with gibberellic acid or not, approximately doubled the number of tubers formed but halved their individual weight compared with only one harvest at plant senescence. After a storage period of about 1 year, with their vigour declining, the aerial tubers were planted in the field. Aerial seed tubers taken from multiple harvests during the previous year produced the same number of tubers as plants grown from above-ground tubers harvested at plant senescence only, but the tuber yields declined with earlier harvesting when small (5–13 mm) aerial tubers were used, compared to larger (14–19 mm) tubers.  相似文献

Summary Increased potassium (K) fertilization of saline soils has been implicated in alleviating salt stress in plants. We examined whether varying K concentrations in Murashige & Skoog (MS: 1962) basal medium could affect salt (NaCl) stress in micropropagated potatoes. Plantlets of cvs Sierra and Russet Burbank were evaluated after 1 month of growth in a medium containing 0. 40, or 80 mM NaCl and 6,20, or 30 mMK. The medium K was adjusted using KNO3 while total nitrogen was kept constant using NH4NO3. Growth parameters were less affected in Sierra than Russet Burbank, and roots were less affected than shoots, as the medium salinity increased. Tissue Na levels were greater when the medium K was 6 mM compared with 20 mM MS control. The medium K concentration 50% greater than MS control did not promote growth and did not limit tissue Na levels. While this should be confirmed by field assessment, our results suggest that while K deficiency promotes salt damage, its addition beyond the usual fertilizer recommendations is not beneficial in alleviating salinity stress.  相似文献

Summary Potatoes are exposed to mechanical forces which can lead to subcutaneous tissue discoloration resulting in losses. We investigated the number and intensity of impacts in different phases of representative Dutch ware potato handling chains using an instrumented sphere (IS). Other questions we asked were, to which drop height onto a defined surface do measured impacts correspond, and what is the relation between the number of impacts and damage? Close relationships between peak acceleration and velocity change for different drop heights were found for various cushioning materials, thus allowing interpretation of impact measurements in terms of drops. The IS recorded c. 340 impacts exceeding 30g. The contribution to the total number of impacts was 11% for Harvest, 0% for Storage, 10% for Transport and 79% for Packaging. The number and intensity of impacts correlated well with the amount of subcutaneous tissue discoloration. It is concluded that the produce-friendliness of the handling chains can be improved.  相似文献

Summary Potato tuber dormancy is usually defined as lasting from tuber initiation until a sprout of 2 mm long has been formed under storage conditions optimal for sprouting. We tried to find out whether there is a period during which buds of seed tubers do not grow and whether different batches of seed take the same time to grow sprouts 2 mm long. We measured changes in number of leaf primordia and length of tuber buds of cvs Diamant and Désirée over two years. After early haulm pulling, buds did not grow for at least 60 days (‘Diamant’) or 95 days (‘Désirée’). Buds in both cultivars and two tuber weights of ‘Diamant’ took about 20 days from the estimated onset of sprouting to grow 2 mm long. We question whether this period is always similar and thus whether the moment sprouts 2 mm long have formed is a good criterion for the end of dormancy.  相似文献

Summary Film-wrapped potatoes were compared with non-wrapped potatoes for blackspot susceptibility. Individual ‘Russet Burbank’ potatoes wrapped in Cryovac D-955 shrink film were less susceptible than non-wrapped potatoes to internal blackspot injuries when stored at 24°C. The film wrap reduced potato weight loss (water loss) but it did not alter the rate of respiration or the endogenous oxygen or carbon dioxide levels. Thus the reduced susceptibility to blackspot could not be related to reduced oxygen levels much as would inhibit the activity of polyphenol oxidase, the enzyme responsible for the development of internal blackspot. In addition to high suscetibility to internal blackspot, the non-wrapped potatoes shrivelled at 24°C and lost their marketable appearance.  相似文献

In order to determine proper selection criteria for tuber yield in potato clones obtained from true potato seed (TPS) and to evaluate relationships between tuber yield and its components, an investigation was conducted using the five check cultivars Agria, Marfona, Draga, Agata, and Arinda, and 120 potato clones obtained from TPS. The study was conducted in an augmented randomized complete block design with three replications. Yield and its components were recorded. Correlation coefficient analysis showed that tuber yield had significant positive associations with number of tubers per plant, average weight per tuber (tuber size), plant height, diameter of main stem, and number of main and secondary stems per plant, whereas its correlation with tuber dry-matter concentration was significantly negative. Number of tubers per plant, tuber size, and plant height had significant standardized partial regression coefficients with very small tolerance and large variance inflation factor (VIF) values. These were considered as the first-order variables in sequential path analysis.  相似文献

Summary Potato tubers (cvs Fina, Marfona and Spunta) were stored in a clamp in the region of Mount Vermion in Northern Greece (altitude about 1400 m) from October 1985 to April 1986. No sprout inhibitor was applied. Tubers were analysed for dry matter and sugar content at 2–4 month intervals. Cultivar and date of sampling had a no significant effect on dry matter but had a significant effect on the total and reducing sugar contents. A significant interaction between cultivar and date of sampling was observed for dry matter and sugars. A continuous increase of total and reducing sugars from October to April was found in tubers of cv. Marfona. In tubers of cvs Fina and Spunta the total and reducing sugars increased, significantly only until March, and thereafter decreased.  相似文献

Summary In four pot experiments, potato plants of cv. Element were artificially infected withV. dahliae. At an early and a late harvest haulms were killed chemically, by burning or by various other treatments, including cutting them into pieces of different lengths and keeping the debris on the soil surface or covering with soil. After 4 weeks the plant material was air-dried and the number of microsclerotia per mg was determined. At the early harvest, in two experiments, the chemical treatment yielded more microsclerotia than the cutting treatments. Covering colonised haulm tissue with non-sterilised soil was effective in inhibiting microsclerotia formation. Shorter haulm pieces led to fewer microsclerotia at the later harvest if the material was kept on the soil surface. The variation in microsclerotial yield and in treatment effects among the different experiments was large.  相似文献

Summary In potato (Solanum tuberosum L., cv. Sebago), benzyladenine (BA) promoted tuberization at high day/night temperatures (32°/18°C), while gibberrellic acid (GA) and chlorethylphosphonic acid (CEPA) reduced tuberization at low day/night temperatures (22°/18°C). These results are consistent with the hypothesis that temperature exerts its influence on tuber formation by altering the balance between endogenous gibberellins, cytokinins and inhibitors, but not ethylene.  相似文献

Summary After three weeks curing at 10°C, potato tubers cv. Record were stored at 4°C under different controlled atmospheres (CA) for six months to study the effect on crisp fry colour, sprout growth and rotting. Combinations of low levels of CO2 (0.7–1.8%) and low levels of O2 (2.1–3.9%) gave a significantly lighter crisp colour, low sprout growth and fewer rotted tubers compared with 0.9% CO2 and 21.0% O2. Tubers stored in these conditions. showed a significantly higher weight loss and shrinkage after reconditioning. High CO2: low O2 combinations during storage completely inhibited sprout growth and caused the darkest crisp colour, but after reconditioning tubers gave the same level of sprouting and crisps as light as the other CA combinations. Furthermore these combinations, especially CO2 at 10 or 15%, increased the onset of rotting. Also our results showed that at low concentrations of CO2 (0.7–1.6%), and low O2 (2–2.4%) there was an increase in tuber rotting.  相似文献
