Fear is a whole body response that may result in behavioral, physiologic, and emotional adaptations that function to protect the animal. Adaptive fear responses occur in the context of threat and are appropriate for the particular response requirements of the fear-provoking situation. Maladaptive fear responses occur out of context or in excess of the demands of the situation. Recent evidence implicates dysregulation of the brain noradrenergic system in the pathophysiology of fear disorders. Noise phobias in dogs meet the criteria of a phobia. Clinical and early laboratory findings suggest there may be inherent individual predispositions in dogs for the development of these disorders. It has been suggested that noise phobic dogs have a auditory sensitivity to particular sounds. Treatment of noise phobias should focus on reducing the response to the phobic sound rather than on the behaviors exhibited during the fear response.  相似文献

When treating diabetic cats, the primary aim is to control clinical signs without causing clinical hypoglycaemia. Secondary goals are to maximise the chances of attaining diabetic remission and to minimise the risk of complications due to chronic hyperglycaemia. A treatment plan that is convenient for the owner is important for compliance. Underweight or overweight diabetic cats should be fed with the aim of normalising bodyweight. Current evidence suggests that non-obese diabetic cats can be fed ad libitum. The oral hypoglycaemic drug glipizide is well established as a treatment for about a third of diabetic cats, which have residual beta cell function. Preliminary studies on other oral agents such as vanadium salts, metformin, and troglitazone indicate a potential use in some diabetic cats. Insulin treatment remains the treatment of choice for the majority of diabetic cats. Choice of insulin, dose rates and monitoring of treatment are discussed.  相似文献

Feline elimination problems are the leading behavioral complaint of cat owners. When presented with a feline elimination problem there are three main diagnostic categories: medical problems, marking or toileting problems. It is important to first perform diagnostic tests to rule out and/or address underlying medical issues and all feline house soiling patients should receive a comprehensive physical examination. When the elimination problem persists after a medical problem has either been ruled out or remedied, a behavioral diagnosis should be obtained. The primary distinction that must be made in a behavioral diagnosis is whether the cat is engaging in marking behavior or selecting a spot other than the litterbox for elimination (a toileting problem). The motivation for urine marking may be territorial behavior or anxiety/stress whereas toileting problems are often triggered by medical causes, aversions, preferences or anxiety. Marking animals should be neutered and additional treatment measures may include reducing conflict and stress in the environment. Drug therapy has been long used to help control urine marking and recent studies have furthered our knowledge about the most appropriate treatments. Treatment for toileting problems should focus on providing an attractive litterbox while reducing the attractiveness or accessibility of inappropriate target spots.  相似文献

Type-1 diabetes, resulting from immune-mediated destruction of beta cells, appears to be rare in cats. Type-2 diabetes, characterised by inadequate insulin secretion and impaired insulin action, is the most common form of diabetes in cats. Other specific forms of diabetes constitute a substantial minority of cases. The most common is pancreatic destruction from pancreatic adenocarcinoma. Less frequent causes are insulin resistance from other endocrinopathies including acromegaly. Diabetes in cats is characterised by variable loss of insulin secretory capacity and insulin resistance. Glucose toxicity, islet amyloid-deposition, and pancreatitis contribute to further loss of beta cells and failure of insulin secretion. A significant number of cats undergo remission of their diabetes, usually 1-3 months after good glycaemic control is instituted. Obesity, old age, and Burmese breed are recognised risk factors for the development of diabetes in cats.  相似文献

A total of 12 clinically ill cats previously diagnosed as feline infectious peritonitis (FIP) were treated with a combination of recombinant feline interferon and glucocorticoid. A complete remission (over 2 years) and a partial remission (2 to 5 months) were observed in four (33.3%) and four (33.3%) cases, respectively. Those that survived for more than 2 years were all older cats (6 to 16 years old) with the effusive form of FIP.  相似文献

Canine atopic dermatitis (cAD) is a genetically inherited clinical syndrome that encompasses a diversity of mechanisms and can have a variety of triggers. Development of clinical disease is the result of genetic factors and environmental conditions, which shape the resulting immunological response. Clinical disease becomes evident once a threshold of inflammatory response is achieved. Skin barrier impairment plays a role in promoting cutaneous dysbiosis and increased allergen penetration. Keratinocytes shape the response of dendritic cells and subsequent lymphocytic response. Thymic stromal lymphopoietin is one of the links between the damaged skin barrier and the modulation of a T-helper (Th)2 response. It is still unclear whether mutations in skin barrier genes exist in atopic dogs, as they do in humans, or whether the observed alterations are purely secondary to inflammation. A dysregulated immune response with increased Th2, Th17 and CD4+ CD25+ regulatory T cells has been reported. A variety of cytokines [interleukin(IL)-31, IL-34, Macrophage migration inhibitory factor] are proposed as potential biomarkers and treatment targets because they are increased in the serum of atopic dogs when compared to controls, although a correlation between serum levels of these factors and severity of disease is not always present. The main issue with many published studies is that atopic dogs are always only compared to normal controls. Thus, it is unclear whether the changes that we find are truly a signature of cAD or merely a manifestation of nonspecific broad inflammatory responses. Studies considering comparison with other inflammatory diseases different from cAD are urgently needed to correctly identify what is specific to this complicated syndrome.

Retinal dystrophies are a common cause of blindness in purebred dogs. Progressive retinal atrophy, the canine equivalent of retinitis pigmentosa in humans, is the most common dystrophy. Molecular studies have led to the identification of the genetic defect underlying some forms of progressive retinal atrophy and the mapping of the chromosomal location of others. Additionally, the gene mutation that causes a severe retinal dystrophy in the briard, which is the equivalent of Leber congenital amaurosis in humans, has been identified. These advances have led to the development of DNA-based diagnostic tests for some retinal dystrophies, thus facilitating their eradication. The study of these dystrophies in dogs has also provided useful information about the equivalent diseases in humans. Recently, gene therapy has been used to restore vision to dogs with a retinal dystrophy due to a mutation in the RPE65 gene. Such studies are important in the quest to develop therapies for similar conditions in humans.  相似文献
