Studies were carried out to test the possibility of identifying European Armillaria species by using isozyme patterns. Twenty-two different enzymes were used to analyse the haploid and diploid mycelium extract of Armillaria borealis, Armillaria cepistipes, Armillaria gallica, Armillaria mellea, Armillaria ostoyae and Armillaria tahescens. Tests for fumarase (E.C. 4.2.1.1.), aconitase (E.C. 4.2.1.3.), leucine-amino peptidase (E.C. 3.4.11.1.), isocitrate dehydrogenase (E.C. 1.1.1.42.), shikimic dehydrogenase (E.C. 1.1.1.25), glucose-6-P-dehydrogenase (E.C. 1.1.1.49.), malic enzyme (E.C. 1.1.1.40.), 6-P-gluconic dehydrogenase (E.C. 1.1.4.4.), pectin esterase (E.C. 3.1.1.11.), and pectic lyase (E.C. 4.2.99.3.) did not reveal enzyme activity. Isozyme profiles of acid phosphatase (E.C. 3.1.3.2.), phospho-gluco-isomerase (E.C. 5.3.1.9.), peroxidase (E.C. 1.11.1.7.), polyphenoloxidase (E.C. 1.14.18.), malic dehydrogenase (E.C. 1.1.1.37.), glutamic dehydrogenase (E.C. 1.4.1.3.) and superoxide dismutase (E.C. 1.15.1.1.) were ineffective for species identification. In contrast, esterase (E.C. 3.1.1.1.), glutamic-oxalacetic transaminase (2.6.1.1.), phospho-gluco-mutase (E.C. 2.7.5.1.), alcohol dehydrogenase (E.C. 1.1.1.1.), and polygalacturonase (E.C. 3.2.1.15.) isoenzyme patterns showed enough polymorphism to allow the identification of the different Armillaria species. However, it is necessary to compare several enzyme profiles for a conclusive identification. Intraspecific crosses of A tabescens were confirmed by the presence of a heteromeric isozyme pattern of alcohol dehydrogenase and phospho-gluco-mutase.  相似文献

Biological activity in tree rhizosphere and association of VAM fungi with tree-roots could be used as selection criteria for agroforestry trees in arid ecosystems. Dehydrogenase activity and VAM fungi association in rhizosphere of six agroforestry trees (Azadirachta indica, Acacia tortilis, Eucalyptus camaldulensis, Prosopis cineraria and Tecomella undulata) were studied under irrigated and rainfed conditions in the arid zone of India. Higher dehydrogenase activity (9.5 to 16.8∼p kat g soil−1), root colonization (58.3 to 68.5%) and spore density (132.5 to 234.7 spores 100 g soil−1) were observed in tree rhizosphere as compared to that in non-rhizosphere (7.4, 37.7 and 44.4). Irrigation had increased dehydrogenase activity by 22.1% while it reduced root colonization and spore density by 14.2% and 16.2%, respectively. Trees of A. indica had registered maximum growth while E. camaldulensis the least. Findings suggest that selection of A. nilotica, A. indica, and T. undulata for plantations of agroforestry in arid region would reduce the risk and ensure sustainability of the agroforestry system.  相似文献

Several hundred mine tailings dams occur in the Witwatersrand Basin Goldfields in central South Africa. Seepage of acid mine drainage (AMD) from these unlined structures is widespread, and a variety of contaminants is released into soil and groundwater. The ‘Mine Woodlands Project’ is aimed at evaluating the use of high-density tree stands over surrounding contaminant plumes to limit the spread of contaminants through hydraulic control of groundwater and enhanced uptake or immobilisation of contaminants. The annual pattern of hourly sap flow in four contiguous Eucalyptus dunnii trees (aged three years) was followed over a full year in a species trial situated near Carltonville. The annual pattern of hourly sap flow was also recorded in four contiguous sample trees (aged four years) of the clonal hybrid E. grandis × E. camaldulensis (E. G×C) at another trial near Orkney. Both species showed high sap flow rates close to reference evaporation rates in response to summer rains. Both showed greatly reduced sap flow rates during the latter half of the dry winter season. Sap flow rates only recovered after the arrival of the first spring rains. Annual sap flow (E. dunnii, 673 mm; E. G×C, 767 mm) was similar to the recorded annual rainfall at each site (E. dunnii, 629 mm; E. G×C, 795 mm), and was substantially lower than total annual reference evaporation (E. dunnii, 1 273 mm; E. G×C, 1 330 mm). We conclude that the roots of both species are not yet deep enough to access the AMD-influenced groundwater, which lies at depths of 14 and 10 m below the ground at the Carltonville and Orkney sites, respectively. Despite prolonged water deficits, both species survived well and maintained sufficient vigour to permit the quick recovery of high transpiration rates in the following summer. This resilience is essential to hasten root growth and improve the chance of contact with groundwater plumes.  相似文献

[目的]为了解雷州半岛尾巨桉速生人工林生态系统的C、N、P分配格局及化学计量特征。[方法]采用空间换时间的方法,选取雷州半岛4种不同林龄(1、3、5、7 a)的尾巨桉人工林为研究对象,对尾巨桉叶片、凋落物及土壤的C、N、P含量及化学计量特征进行测定分析。[结果]表明:C、N含量表现为叶片凋落物土壤,P含量表现为叶片土壤凋落物,且3个库间差异显著;土壤的C含量随林龄增加而增加,N、P含量差异不显著,土壤C∶N随林龄的增加而增加,说明土壤有机质分解速率逐渐下降;凋落物的C∶N为54. 07 92. 18 ( 25),表明尾巨桉林下凋落物分解速率较慢,N元素成为主要限制凋落物分解的元素,凋落物的C∶N随林龄的增加先增加后下降,凋落物分解速度先降低后升高;叶片的N∶P为10. 80 12. 98,说明中幼林龄尾巨桉受N限制较明显。相关性分析表明:凋落物养分元素含量受叶片限制,土壤养分含量受凋落物限制,表明生态系统内部C、N、P元素在植物、凋落物与土壤之间实现了运输和转换。[结论]雷州半岛尾巨桉中、幼林龄时期土壤有机质及凋落物分解速率较慢;随林龄的增加,土壤有机质、凋落物分解速率下降,N元素成为其主要分解限制性元素,林分生长受N限制明显。  相似文献

Calonectria leaf blight (CLB), caused by Calonectria pteridis, is a major foliar disease of eucalypt plantations in warm and high rainfall regions in Brazil. The use of resistant genotypes is the best method for disease control in the field, so identification of sources of resistance is strategic for the long‐term genetic breeding programmes of eucalypt. In this study, resistance of 13 species of Eucalyptus and 3 species of Corymbia to CLB was evaluated by spray inoculation of a spore suspension (1 × 104 conidia ml?1) of the pathogen, under controlled conditions. Eucalyptus brassiana, E. saligna, E. scias and E. agglomerata were the most resistant, while E. robusta, E. urophylla, E. camaldulensis, E. longirostrata and C. toreliana were moderately resistant and E. cloeziana, E. pellita, E. tereticornis, E. pilularis, C. maculata, E. grandis, E. dunnii and C. citriodora were the most susceptible. The broad inter and intraspecific variability of the species tested demonstrates the potential for introgression of resistance genes into valuable genotypes as a strategy for the breeding programmes and commercial plantation of eucalypt.  相似文献

Effect of the lectin PHA on the feeding behavior of the grain aphid   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
The electrical penetration graph (EPG) method was used to quantify the effect of the lectin PHA (phytohemagglutinin) on the feeding behavior of the grain aphid Sitobion avenae F (Hemiptera: Aphididae). Addition of PHA to an artificial diet affected aphid probing behavior. In general, increasing concentrations of PHA in sucrose-agarose gels significantly reduced the number of aphid probes and extended their duration. Aphids feeding on the gels with lectin (without concentration 50 μg · cm−3) had a prolonged activity (EPG pattern C) that was corresponded to prolonged penetration of the epidermis and mesophyll for aphids feeding on plants. Such insects also showed a significant reduction in salivation and passive ingestion from gels and a reduction in the total number of gel penetrations. At concentrations ≤250 μg · cm−3, PHA reduced feeding behavior on gels, and the EPG data were interpreted to correspond with reduced salivation into phloem sieve elements (EPG pattern E1) and reduced ingestion of phloem sap (EPG pattern E2). PHA also delayed the onset of the first E1 and E2 patterns. At higher concentrations (≥500 μg · cm−3), PHA completely stopped salivation and passive ingestion from gels. Similarly, higher concentration of PHA strongly reduced activity on gels that corresponded to activity in xylem (EPG pattern G); high PHA delayed the onset of the first G pattern and reduced total time of pattern G activity.  相似文献

Three drought-tolerant eucalypt genotypes have been investigated for a broad spectrum of properties to provide a basis for comparison on their suitability for various end-uses. The genotypes included were a Eucalyptus grandis × E. camaldulensis hybrid, E. gomphocephala and E. cladocalyx, selected based on previous studies that indicated good potential to tolerate arid conditions, reasonably good volume growth and straightness of stems. In this study, information was added on differences between species and parts of stems in growth (volume and biomass) and properties of wood (density and stiffness), fibres (dimensions and microfibril angle) and vessels (size and numbers). We found high wood densities and stiffness values for E. cladocalyx and E. gomphcephala, making them suitable for construction wood. Logs from the mid-part of the stem had the best timber properties, as the butt logs showed the highest microfibril angle and lowest wood stiffness due to longitudinal juvenility. Such juvenility was also to some degree observed for wood density and fibre length. The information gained will be especially helpful for selecting species and processing options for small farm and community plantations for producing higher-value products that may be sold to generate much-needed income as well as for local uses, such as fuelwood and charcoal.  相似文献

Frost resistance and subzero temperature effects on photosynthesis, survival and distribution were studied in Euterpe edulis, a tree palm species of the Atlantic Forest, near the southern limit of the species distribution. E. edulis grows under the forest canopy and is absent from forest stands located near bottom valleys. This palm species has been commercially exploited for palm hearts, making it the most important non-timber forest species in North-Eastern Argentina. Its distribution was studied in relation to the frequency and intensity of subzero temperatures along a topographic gradient. E. edulis abundance was higher at the highest site and decreased or became absent towards the lowest site. Subzero temperatures during each of three winter seasons were observed in the lowest site. The medium and high elevation sites never experienced absolute minimum temperatures below 0 °C. Forest structure, fraction of solar radiation transmitted through the canopy and soil water potentials did not change substantially along the gradient. After a low temperature period in winter, the maximum quantum yield in E. edulis leaflets was relatively low in individuals at the low elevation site while having normal values at the medium and high elevation sites. Thermal analysis indicated that E. edulis saplings can supercool down to about −10 °C and do not tolerate extracellular ice formation. Ice formation was observed at about −4 °C, relatively close to the equilibrium freezing temperature, only after an increase in ambient humidity resulted in dew formation on the plant surface. Dew formation is commonly observed in valleys during the winter season. This observation gives further support to the hypothesis that strong infrequent frost events could be an important environmental factor determining the spatial distribution pattern of E. edulis in the Atlantic Forest of Argentina.  相似文献

Chrysoporthe canker disease is one of the serious threats facing planted Eucalyptus in southern Africa. In order to manage this disease, planting of less susceptible species of Eucalyptus has been promoted in many countries but it is not clear which species are less susceptible for Zambian environments. The purpose of this study was to test the response of different Eucalyptus species to Chrysoporthe fungal pathogens under field conditions to identify the least susceptible species to the disease. Two-year-old Eucalyptus trees (E. grandis, E. camaldulensis, E. cloeziana and E. tereticornis) growing in low- and high-rainfall locations were inoculated separately with three Chrysoporthe fungal species (C. austroafricana, C. syzygiicola and C. zambiensis) and the induced lesion size was measured six months after inoculation. Analysis of variance revealed that lesion size differed significantly between Eucalyptus species (F3,948 = 1 978.8, p < 0.001). Lesion size on Eucalyptus species increased in the order E. camaldulensis < E. teriticornis < E. cloeziana < E. grandis. On average, trees growing in the higher-rainfall site produced significantly larger lesions than trees growing in the low-rainfall site (F1,948 = 565, p < 0.001), suggesting that location influences disease severity. Smaller lesions on E. camaldulensis indicate lower susceptibility to Chrysoporthe canker disease, providing an opportunity to use this species in the selection and breeding for resistant Eucalyptus genotypes for plantation development in high disease-risk sites in Zambia.  相似文献

利用结构参数角尺度、大小比数、混交度对浙江龙泉萌生杉木林的空间结构进行分析,结果表明:林分的平均角尺度为0.512,林分空间格局为随机分布;杉木树种分布格局为团状分布,木荷树种整体分布格局为随机分布,其它树种的整体分布格局为均匀分布;林分的平均混交度为0.438 4,在弱度混交和中度混交之间;林分中树种以胸径作为比较指标的林木个体的优势排列顺序为:苦槠、马尾松> 杉木> 樟树> 木荷> 枫香、红豆树> 拟赤杨> 榆树。根据萌生杉木林的结构特征提出经营对策, 通过合理择伐和补植乡土树种进行林分结构调整,提高林分质量,优化林分空间结构,以便更好地发挥其功能。  相似文献

During 2001, a series of four site–taxa interaction trials was established in the warm temperate (mean annual temperature range 16–19 °C) forestry climatic zone of KwaZulu-Natal (KZN), South Africa. The main objective was to investigate the commercial forestry potential of a range of alternative Eucalyptus and Corymbia taxa for moderately dry (mean annual precipitation < 850 mm) sites within the zone. At rotation end, all trials received final standing tree measurements. At one of the sites (Rockvale), trees of eight promising alternative taxa were felled, stem measurements and wood samples taken, and wood and fibre productivities determined. On the basis of tree growth and wood and fibre production, C. citriodora subsp. variegata, C. henryi, E. badjensis, E. benthamii and E. dorrigoensis (listed alphabetically) demonstrated the greatest potential as commercial alternatives for moderately dry sites in the KZN warm temperate zone. The majority of these taxa showed strong site specificity. Eucalyptus benthamii was the only taxon showing high growth adaptability to the entire range of site conditions applied in the series. The non-susceptibility of C. citriodora subsp. variegata and C. henryi to the current topical insect pests Thaumastocoris peregrinus, Leptocybe invasa and Glycaspis brimblecombei elevates the appeal of these taxa as potential alternative planting choices for moderately dry sites within lower altitude (<1 100 m asl) areas of the climate zone. The matching of the most promising alternative taxa in the series to the range of sites encountered in moderately dry areas of the KZN warm temperate forestry zone is discussed in this paper.  相似文献

Fast growing trees, in particular nitrogen fixing trees, are essential for the establishment of sustainable agroforestry practices by resource-poor and/or environmentally conscious aarmers. An important selection factor for trees is therefore high N2 fixing capability. This study was conducted to examine biological nitrogen fixation (BNF) in Leucaena leucocephala L., as affected by growth in pots containing 4, 10, 15 and 30 kg soil and when grown together with Eucalyptus camaldulensis. BNF was measured by the 15N isotope dilution technique. Leucaena and Eucalyptus were grown either sole (SL, SE) or in two mixtures (1:1 - L1:E1 and 1:2 - L1:E2) for a period of 6 months. Planting pattern influenced (P < 0.05) dry matter and N content of shoot and roots of Eucalyptus, as the sole planted trees gave the highest yield. Dry matter, N content and total amount of N fixed by Leucaena significantly decreased with decreasing rooting volume. Also, the smaller the rooting volume (or soil weight), the higher was the proportion (%) of N derived from the atmosphere (%Ndfa) by leucaena. For each rooting volume, the sole or mixed planting pattern did not significantly influence either the proportion (%) or amount of N fixed by leucaena. For these trees, therefore, rooting volume rather than cropping pattern influenced the proportion and amount of nitrogen fixed.  相似文献

A correlation between heterozygosity of genotypes and survival (fitness) was studied in eight natural populations of Pinus roxburghii through isozyme analysis using horizontal starch gel electrophoresis. Under each population, 20 mother trees of different ages (30 to more than 100 years) were selected which were at least 50 m apart. From each tree, eight seeds were assayed for eleven enzyme systems viz., Aconitase, Aspertate aminotransferase, Glutamate dehydrogenase, Isocitrate dehydrogenase, Leucine-amino peptidase, Malate dehydrogenase, Menadione reductase, Phosphoglucose isomerase, Phosphoglucomutase, 6-Phosphogluconate dehydrogenase and Shikimic acid dehdrogenase which were found to be encoded by 18 polymorphic loci. Genetic constitution of the mother trees was determined by analysing endosperms and embryos separately. The number of alleles in the progeny (embryos) and the mother trees varied from 38 to 42 and 34 to 37, respectively, in all the populations. Distribution of degree of heterozygosity and fixation index for the progeny and the mother trees were calculated. The mother trees showed a substantial shift towards higher degree of heterozygosity as compared to the progeny. Fixation index values were significantly higher and negative for the mother trees as compared to the progeny, which revealed that heterozygosity was positively correlated with survival in P. roxburghii. Application: Heterozygous geneotypes in tree species are shown to have better survival over homozygotes under diverse environmental conditions. Every year, millions of Pinus roxburghii saplings are planted in India. However, the fact that survival is very low might possibly be due to inbred/homozygous plants that suffer from fitness disadvantage. Our study indicates that heterozygotes have a better chance of survival under environmental conditions. The use of heterozygotes should lead to effective establishments of Pinus roxburghii plantations.  相似文献

Genetic variability for juvenile traits, which included basal diameter, height, biomass accumulation, and growth increment, was studied in eight provenances involving four species, Eucalyptus grandis, E. saligna, E. camaldulensis and E. urophylla, under uniform greenhouse conditions. The species differed significantly for all juvenile traits including individual mean allozyme heterozygosity, and high levels of variability were observed within and among species, which indicated that scope for selection exists for these traits. There was considerable reduction in genetic variability for all traits at 6 months of age when compared to that observed at 4 months. Eucalyptus saligna recorded the highest mean for basal diameter and biomass accumulation, while E. camaldulensis exhibited the highest mean for height. The two E. camaldulensis provenances exhibited the highest individual mean heterozygosities (0.425 and 0.417), followed by E. saligna (0.296 and 0.258), E. urophylla (0.254 and 0.233), and E. grandis (0.300 and 0.163). The juvenile traits were correlated with individual mean allozyme heterozygosity to examine the possibility of developing a genotypic basis for early selection of potentially superior individuals in a tree improvement program.  相似文献

In eucalypt plantations in subtropical Australia, Eucalyptus dunnii exhibits greater diameter increment after thinning than more shade-tolerant Corymbia citriodora. To elucidate the mechanism underlying this difference, we investigated relationships between tree leaf area and sapwood area following thinning in 11-year-old E. dunnii and C. citriodora plantations. There was no significant difference in specific leaf area (SLA) between thinned and unthinned stands in E. dunnii and C. citriodora, whereas crown zone significantly affected SLA in the two eucalypts. At the whole-tree level non-linear leaf area (Al)–sapwood area (As) relationships were measured in both eucalypts by thinning treatment. A significant increase in Al/As ratio was only observed at the upper crown in thinned E. dunnii. The present results suggested the plastic nature of response of leaf characteristics in both eucalypts grown in different light environments and the species-specific pattern of crown-zone leaf responses to thinning in the two species, i.e. the top of the canopy appears to be driving greater growth response to thinning in the less shade tolerant E. dunnii compared with the more shade-tolerant C. citriodora. It is concluded that different thinning regimes should be applied in shade-tolerant and shade-intolerant eucalypt forests.  相似文献

Growth behaviour of the relatively shade-intolerant species Eucalyptus dunnii and the rather more shade-tolerant Corymbia citriodora was considered during several growth periods over 8–14 years of age in experimental plantation monoculture in subtropical New South Wales. Larger trees dominated growth in any stand; this was consistent with the principle that inter-tree competition in such forests is for light and is asymmetric in that larger trees shade smaller trees but the reverse does not occur. Once competition was established, competition-induced mortality of C. citriodora was less than that of E. dunnii. A model relating tree diameter growth rate to tree diameter, competitive position in the stand and stand basal area was developed. The model showed that smaller, hence partially shaded, trees in stands of C. citriodora were better able to maintain their growth rates than equivalent trees in stands of E. dunnii. It is hypothesised that this reflects the greater shade tolerance of C. citriodora. This pattern of growth led to a more even distribution of tree size classes across the stand in the more shade-tolerant species.  相似文献

The palm Euterpe edulis has high ecological and economic importance in Brazil. Currently, this species is being cultivated and managed for spontaneous regeneration in banana plantations. However, there are no data comparing its plantation growth performance to its native forest growth. We evaluated growth and mortality (M) of individuals of E. edulis planted in secondary dense ombrophilous forest and in banana plantations, as well as their relationships with site variables (canopy opening, soil nutrient availability, density of existing E. edulis, and herbivory). Twelve banana plantation sites and 12 sites in secondary dense ombrophilous forests were selected. At each site, 25 young individuals of E. edulis were planted in 2003. Annually until 2008, morphometric, herbivory, and M of the individuals were evaluated. In 2008, canopy and soil variables were measured at each plot. E. edulis growth was five times higher in banana plots compared to forest plots; current annual increment on height reached 38.9 cm in banana plots, compared to 7.3 cm in forest plots. M was relatively low and similar at both sites, presenting an intraspecific density-dependence pattern. Significant correlations were found between morphometric variables, M, and herbivory of E. edulis and canopy and soil variables. Euterpe edulis presented plasticity that allows for its establishment in banana plantations, indicating high potential for management in agroforestry consortia. Such management may be a useful conservation strategy for this and other shade-tolerant species.  相似文献

The most common canopy trees in the savannas of northern Australia, Eucalyptus tetrodonta and E. miniata are also two of the most common species harvested to make didgeridoos, the traditional musical instrument of northern Australian Aboriginal peoples now experiencing high demand from international markets. Most of the trees of the area naturally have hollow cores, or pipes, due to termite activity, but little is known of the relationships of the cores to size of tree, tree growth or survival. In a wooded savanna of northern Australia, 267 individual trees with known growth and survival rates were cored to determine degree of termite-piping. Generalized linear modelling and multi-model inference showed that frequency of piping increased with diameter (dbh) tree for E. tetrodonta, but >85% of E. miniata trees were piped regardless of dbh. Growth (dbh increment) and survival (4-year) were size-dependent. Survival of both species decreased strongly with degree of piping (pipe ratio). For any given diameter, the growth rate of E. miniata trees was independent of pipe ratio, but for E. tetrodonta trees decreased strongly with pipe ratio. From modelled data, a 10-cm tree with pipe ratio of 0.60 was very vulnerable, growing at 0.0 cm year−1 with 46% survival rate, whereas a 40-cm tree, even with large pipe ratios (0.80), grew 0.05 cm year−1 with 98% survival rate. Traditional methods of tree harvesting remove only those smaller hollow trees that are already suffering low growth rates and are likely to die before reaching maturity, whereas current large-scale commercial methods also remove trees with higher growth and survival rates—those trees most likely to contribute to sustainable tree populations. Incorporating traditional selection and harvest methods into current commercial operations would help ensure longevity of this source of livelihood for indigenous peoples of the region.  相似文献

Foliar nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P), potassium (K), calcium (Ca) and magnesium (Mg) concentrations of 5 Symphyomyrtus (E. botryoides, E. cladocalyx, E. microcorys, E. nitens, E. saligna) and 7 Monocalyptus (E. agglomerata, E. baxteri, E. globoidea, E. muelleriana, E. obliqua, E. pilularis, E. regnans) species were determined for each of four hill country microsites; upper shady, lower shady, upper sunny and lower sunny slopes. ANOVA and correlation analysis were used to identify species and microsite effects, and nutrient associations. Significant (P ≤ 0.0014) species differences were identified for all nutrients, E. botryoides and E. saligna generally had high nutrient concentrations while stringybark species were low, particularly for N and K. Subgeneric contrasts revealed that Symphyomyrtus species had significantly higher concentrations of P (P = 0.05) N, K and Ca (P < 0.0001) but lower Mg (P < 0.0001) than Monocalyptus. Microsite had less influence on nutrient concentrations than species. N was strongly positively correlated with P and K in most Symphyomyrtus species but was not correlated with P in Monocalyptus. Mg was positively correlated with Ca but negatively correlated with K in most species. The results indicate that Monocalyptus and Symphyomyrtus species differ in ability to accumulate key macronutrients.  相似文献
