Three hundred and twenty broilers were stunned for 2 minutes in batches of 10 per crate in four treatments: 45 per cent carbon dioxide; 55 per cent carbon dioxide; 2 per cent oxygen, or 5 per cent oxygen presented as air diluted by argon. The number of survivors and the time to resumption of consciousness were recorded using the time to eye opening and response to comb pinching as indicators of consciousness. In 45 per cent and 55 per cent carbon dioxide and 2 per cent oxygen, 28, none and eight birds, respectively, survived out of 100 in each group. In 5 per cent oxygen the birds were still fully conscious after a 2 minute exposure period, and the test was discontinued. The time to recovery could be rapid after stunning in both the gases. It is suggested that a concentration of 55 per cent carbon dioxide or less than 1 per cent oxygen are required to kill broilers within a 2 minute exposure period, and that care should be taken to ensure that there is sufficient turbulence within the stunning chamber to avoid air pockets being trapped between the birds.  相似文献

The efficiency of bleeding of broilers (g blood/kg liveweight) was measured after stunning them with either 45 per cent carbon dioxide in air for two minutes or with 2 per cent oxygen (achieved by displacing air with argon) for two minutes or with an electric current (77 or 104 mA at 50 Hz for four seconds). The results indicated that the initial rate of bleeding was higher in the electrically stunned broilers with non-fibrillated hearts than in the gas stunned broilers and electrically stunned broilers with fibrillated hearts. This difference was significant up to 60 seconds after neck cutting (P less than 0.05) but after 140 seconds all the broilers had bled out to a similar extent (30 to 33 g/kg liveweight). It is concluded that after gas stunning the time interval between neck cutting and scalding should be 60 to 140 seconds.  相似文献

Pigs were exposed individually to either 90 per cent argon in air (anoxia), a mixture of 30 per cent carbon dioxide and 60 per cent argon in air (hypercapnic anoxia) or 80 to 90 per cent carbon dioxide in air (hypercapnic hypoxia) and the times to loss of posture, the onset and duration of convulsions, vocalisation and cessation of gagging (respiratory arrest) were determined. The duration of convulsions and the time to onset of respiratory arrest were longer when the pigs were exposed to argon than when they were exposed to the mixture of carbon dioxide and argon or to the high concentration of carbon dioxide in air. A second experiment was carried out under commercial conditions to determine the duration of unconsciousness and insensibility based on the response to a nose prick, and the incidence of death induced by exposing pigs to either 90 per cent argon in air or a mixture of 30 per cent carbon dioxide and 60 per cent argon in air for different periods. The results showed that when pigs were exposed for three minutes to either argon or the mixture of carbon dioxide and argon they should be bled within 25 seconds from the end of exposure to the gas to prevent them regaining consciousness during bleeding. When the pigs were exposed to either argon or the mixture of carbon dioxide and argon for five minutes and bleeding out began within 45 seconds they did not regain consciousness or suffer convulsions while being bled. The majority of the pigs died when they were exposed to argon for seven minutes, and all of them died when they were exposed to the mixture of carbon dioxide and argon for seven minutes.  相似文献

As chickens may rapidly regain consciousness after gas stunning, the effects of a two minute exposure to a carbon dioxide-argon mixture on survival rate were investigated. Broilers were stunned in batches of 10 per transport crate with a mixture of 10, 20 or 30 per cent carbon dioxide in argon with 5 per cent residual oxygen. The birds were exposed to the gaseous atmosphere for two minutes. A control group of birds was electrically stunned (120 mA for four seconds; 50Hz sinusoidal waveform). In addition, the incidence of carcase downgrading conditions after stunning with 20 per cent or 30 per cent carbon dioxide in argon with 5 per cent residual oxygen was compared with the incidence after electrical stunning. The results showed that stunning with 10 and 20 per cent carbon dioxide in argon with 5 per cent residual oxygen resulted in survival rates of 24 and 1 per cent, respectively. Stunning with 30 per cent carbon dioxide in argon with 5 per cent residual oxygen resulted in the death of all the broilers. Electrical stunning resulted in a significantly (P less than 0.001) larger number of broilers with breast muscle haemorrhaging and broken furculum and coracoid bones, whereas stunning with gas mixtures resulted in a significantly (P less than 0.001) higher incidence of broilers with damaged wing bones. Electrical stunning of broilers resulted in a significantly higher pH in the breast muscles 20 minutes post mortem than stunning with carbon dioxide-argon mixtures.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献

The spontaneous electroencephalogram (EEG) and somatosensory evoked potentials (SEPs) were examined in 17 hens before and during stunning in 45 per cent carbon dioxide. The results indicated that EEG suppression and loss of SEPs occurred in 21 +/- 4 s and 30 +/- 2 s, respectively, after exposure to carbon dioxide, eventually leading to EEG silence in 101 +/- 18 s. Convulsions occurred 15 seconds after the loss of SEPs, suggesting that the hens convulsed while they were unconscious. It is concluded that the induction of anaesthesia can be rapid in carbon dioxide stunning and in this respect carbon dioxide is potentially suitable for stunning poultry under commercial conditions.  相似文献

Changes in the somatosensory evoked potentials (SEPs) and spontaneous electroencephalogram (EEG) in hens were investigated during stunning with a mixture of 30 per cent carbon dioxide in argon with 5 per cent residual oxygen. The results showed that the SEPs were lost on average in 17 seconds (maximum 28 seconds), which is similar to the 19 seconds (maximum 32 seconds) reported while stunning hens with a mixture of 30 per cent carbon dioxide in argon with 2 per cent residual oxygen. The spontaneous EEG showed suppression and a quiescent phase at 14 and 58 seconds, respectively. It is concluded that a mixture of 30 per cent carbon dioxide in argon with 2 per cent residual oxygen would be ideally suited for batch stunning chickens and any inadvertent increase in the residual oxygen level up to 5 per cent in the stunning atmosphere would not lead to inadequate stunning or recovery of consciousness before neck cutting.  相似文献

Free-range laying hens are able to move between the indoor house and range through exits termed pop holes. The aim of this study was to examine the proportion of the flock that used the pop holes and to identify patterns of movement throughout the flock cycle. Four flocks of free-range hens each of 1500 birds were studied. Ten per cent of each flock were tagged with RFID (radio-frequency identification) transponders and their pop hole activity studied throughout the production cycle. Within two weeks of tagging at 25, 35, 45, 55 and 65 weeks of age, approximately 80 per cent of the tagged birds were seen in the pop holes and 50 per cent of the tagged birds were seen on 80 per cent of the days available to them after tagging. Within the flock, subpopulations of birds could be identified: those that never ventured to the pop holes (approximately 8 per cent), those that used the pop holes very infrequently (approximately 8 per cent), those that sat in the pop holes (approximately 4 per cent), and those that used the pop holes frequently (approximately 80 per cent). There was an effect of age of the birds, time of day and daily mean temperature on pop hole usage. Additional factors affecting activity on particular days were wind speed, rainfall and hours of sunshine. The findings show that a significant proportion of the flock accesses the pop holes on a regular basis with only a very small proportion preferring to stay in the house.  相似文献

1. Six week-old broiler chickens implanted with electroencephalogram (EEG) recording and somatosensory stimulating electrodes were exposed to either 90% argon in air, a mixture of 30% carbon dioxide and 60% argon in air or a mixture of 30% oxygen and 40% carbon dioxide (balance nitrogen) for 2 min, to determine the times to onset of changes in spontaneous EEG and the loss of somatosensory evoked potentials (SEPs) and thus unequivocal loss of consciousness. 2. In addition, after a 2 min exposure to the carbon dioxide-oxygen mixture, some broilers were allowed to recover in air and their EEGs and SEPs were continuously recorded until the return of normal EEG and SEPs. During this period, the time to return of response to comb pinching was also determined in 10 broilers. 3. All broilers exposed to either argon or the carbon dioxide-argon mixture died within 2 min, whereas, only 3 out of 17 broilers died during the 2 min exposure to the carbon dioxide-oxygen mixture. 4. During exposure to argon, unlike the other 2 gas mixtures, the majority of broilers showed high amplitude, low frequency electrical activity in the EEG on average at 10 s. The mean times to onset of EEG suppression were 17, 19 and 40 s after exposure to argon, the carbon dioxide-argon mixture and the carbon dioxide-oxygen mixture, respectively. An isoelectric EEG occurred on average at 58 and 41 s after exposure to argon and the carbon dioxide-argon mixture, respectively. An isoelectric EEG did not occur in broilers which were exposed to the carbon dioxide-oxygen mixture. 5. The SEPs were abolished in broilers on average 32 and 24 s after exposure to argon and the carbon dioxide-argon mixture, respectively. During exposure of broilers to the carbon dioxide-oxygen mixture the SEPs were abolished in the majority of birds on average at 47 s, however, 2 out of 14 birds retained their SEPs for the entire period of 2 min exposure to this gas mixture. 6. During the recovery after exposure to the carbon dioxide-oxygen mixture, response to comb pinching and SEPs returned either at the time of, or soon after, the onset of high frequency electrical activity in the suppressed EEG of broilers. The mean times to return of response to comb pinching and SEPs were 52 and 43 s, respectively. 7. Based on the time to onset of EEG suppression or loss of SEPs, exposure of broilers to either 90% argon in air, or a mixture of 30% carbon dioxide and 60% argon in air, resulted in quicker loss of consciousness than during exposure to a mixture of 40% carbon dioxide, 30% oxygen and 30% nitrogen. The time to return of consciousness after a 2 min exposure to the carbon dioxide-oxygen mixture was also found to be rapid.  相似文献

1. The aversiveness of motion and noise to broiler chickens was examined using a passive avoidance technique. Birds were initially trained to peck a key a fixed number of times to obtain food. After training, food could still be obtained by key pecking, but feeding was immediately followed by 1 min exposure to noise or motion. Birds could delay or avoid exposure by delaying or avoiding key pecking, hence foregoing food. Reduced pecking rate was therefore taken as a measure of aversion. 2. In experiment 1, simultaneous motion and noise, but not noise alone, resulted in a significant decrease in pecking rate in comparison with baseline rates obtained after training. 3. In experiment 2 there was no significant difference in the pecking rates of 4 groups of broilers during training. However, after exposure to 1 of 4 types of motion, strongly significant differences in pecking rates were found between the groups. The mean latency to peak 3 times was significantly greater for birds exposed to gentle vibration, with a single jolt after 55 s, than for birds exposed to simple harmonic motion in either the horizontal or vertical plane. Birds exposed to circular motion in the horizontal plane had a significantly greater mean pecking latency than birds exposed to simple harmonic motion in the vertical plane. 4. Baseline latencies to keypeck in experiments 1 and 2 were longer than expected. In experiment 3 a direct comparison of baseline pecking was made between broilers and laying hens. The utilization of dietary lysine for protein synthesis is affected by the digestibility of protein-bound lysine, by its intestinal resorption and by its oxidative catabolism. The approach chosen in this paper enables a comparison of the cumulative effect of these processes on the utilization of free and protein-bound lysine, respectively. The principle of the approach is based on a quantification of the expiration of 14C-labelled carbon dioxide after an oral administration of a diet, which contains L-(U-14C)-lysine either as a free amino acid or bound to yeast proteins. During an adaptation phase cockerels of the Japanese quail received a diet based mainly on ground wheat and wheat gluten. This diet was supplemented either with yeast proteins or with a mixture of L-amino acids which simulates the composition of the yeast proteins. In the main experiment the expiration of labelled carbon dioxide was measured during 240 minutes after the administration of the corresponding labelled diets. Just before treatment the animals were either in the postprandial phase or in a state of slight hunger. The maximum of expiration of labelled carbon dioxide occurred around the 60th minute after administration of the corresponding labelled diets. The cumulative expiration of labelled carbon dioxide, expressed in per cent of the radioactive dose used, amounts to 15.5% and 14.3% for free and protein-bound lysine, respectively. The utilization of both forms of lysine in the Japanese quail is lower than in broilers.  相似文献

The results achieved in 18 dogs following the use of frozen bone cortical allografts for limb-sparing resection of non-metastatic canine appendicular osteosarcoma are presented. Three to five cisplatin doses (70 mg/m2) were administered, starting the day after surgery. The mean and median survival times were 478 and 266 days (range 80 to 2,611 days), respectively. The survival rate was 94 per cent at three months, 78 per cent at six months, 35 per cent at 12 months, 23 per cent at 18 months and 19 per cent at 24 months; the disease-free interval was 80 to 1,246 days (mean 365 days, median 266 days). Lung metastasis developed in 55 per cent of the dogs within one year. Complications were observed in 14/18 dogs (78 per cent), comprising local recurrence (28 per cent), allograft infection (39 per cent) and implant failure (11 per cent). Despite complications, limb sparing is a useful alternative to amputation in selected cases of appendicular osteosarcoma.  相似文献

1. The effects of relative humidity (rh=40% to 70%) at high ambient temperature (Ta) on the performance of laying hens at different ages (8 to 10 months, Trial 1; and 16 to 18 months, Trial 2) was evaluated. Laying hens were exposed to 25 degrees C (control) for 3 weeks and thereafter acclimated for 1 week to 35 degrees C and 4 different rh. 2. Body weight declined significantly in young and older hens exposed to 60% or 70% and 70% rh, respectively: Food intake declined with increasing Ta, except in the case of older hens exposed to 60% rh, for which it remained relatively constant. Water consumption, however, increased with increasing Ta but the increase was significant in young hens exposed to 70% rh only. 3. Egg production was not affected by the changes in Ta. However, a decrease in egg production was observed in older hens exposed to 60% rh. 4. Egg weight (EW), shell weight (SW) and shell thickness (ST) were significantly reduced by exposure to elevated Ta, whereas % breakage significantly increased. In young hens, a response to rh was exhibited in ST which was significantly higher in hens exposed to the low rh (40% to 45%) than in those exposed to the highest rh (70% to 75%). 5. It can be concluded that Ta is the main environmental factor affecting young and older laying hens while the effect of rh is minor.  相似文献

A previous investigation indicated that when hens were exposed to 2% oxygen in argon (anoxia) EEG suppression and loss of SEPs occurred at 17 and 29 s after exposure. In this study, hens were exposed to 49% carbon dioxide in air (hypercapnic hypoxia) or 31% carbon dioxide with 2% oxygen in argon (hypercapnic anoxia) and their spontaneous electroencephalogram (EEG) and somatosensory evoked potentials (SEPs) were investigated. The results indicated that EEG suppression and loss of SEPs occurred in 11 and 26 s, respectively, in hypercapnic hypoxia. These events occurred at 11 and 19 s, respectively, after exposure to hypercapnic anoxia. These results indicated that, with regard to preslaughter stunning/killing of chickens, a mixture of 31% carbon dioxide with 2% oxygen in argon resulted in a more rapid loss of evoked responses in the brain when compared with 49% carbon dioxide in air or with 2% oxygen in argon. It is concluded that stunning chickens with low concentrations of carbon dioxide in argon would result in a more rapid loss of consciousness.  相似文献

1. Broiler chickens were killed using 90% argon in air, or 30% carbon dioxide and 60% argon in air or 120 mA per bird in a waterbath with a 50 Hz alternating electric current. Ventral or unilateral neck cutting was performed at 1, 3 or 5 min after killing. In addition, a group of broilers was stunned with 120 mA per bird in a waterbath using 1500 Hz alternating current and were bled out with a ventral neck cut within 20 s from stunning.

2. Blood leaving the neck wound was collected in a bin placed on an electronic balance and a computer program calculated the cumulative blood loss up to 100 s after neck cutting.

3. Bleed‐out was significantly affected by killing method and time of neck cutting. Broilers killed with the carbon dioxide‐argon mixture bled‐out less than those killed with argon or 50 Hz electric current. When compared with the 1 min neck cutting interval, a delay of 3 or 5 min resulted in a lower bleed‐out. High frequency electrical stunning and ventral neck cutting within 20 s resulted in a slightly higher bleed‐out than those recorded for the killing methods. However, within argon killing, a delay of 3 or 5 min in ventral or unilateral neck cutting had no significant effect on the bleed‐out. In broilers killed with the carbon dioxide‐argon mixture a 3 min delay in ventral neck cutting or a 5 min delay in unilateral neck cutting resulted in lower bleed‐out.

4. Neck cutting of broilers within 5 min after argon killing or 3 min after killing with the carbon dioxide‐argon mixture would result in a satisfactory bleed‐out.  相似文献

The vocalisation patterns of pigs subjected to stunning in 86 per cent carbon dioxide in a commercial abattoir suggested that narcosis began 30 to 39 seconds after the start of the immersion procedure. The spontaneous and reflex physical behaviour of the pigs after immersion indicated that they were effectively stunned, but the majority of the animals were not considered to be brain-stem dead. None of the carcases showed pale soft exudative meat.  相似文献

The effect of duration of feeding (continuous or discontinued after d 14) and form (granular vs. powder) of spray-dried plasma (SDP) on performance and mortality of broilers using used litter was evaluated with 240 Ross × Ross 308 male broilers (6 broilers per pen, 8 pens per treatment). Dietary treatments were control (no SDP) or SDP as powder or granular included in the pellet and fed continuously (d 0 to 35) or discontinued after d 14. During the experiment, broilers developed necrotic enteritis, and tissue cultures were positive for Escherichia coli and Salmonella, resulting in 50% mortality on control broilers. Addition of SDP to the feed improved (P < 0.05) average daily gain, feed intake, and feed efficiency for each period of the study (d 0 to 14, 15 to 28, 29 to 35, and 0 to 35). Continuous feeding of SDP improved (P < 0.05) average daily gain, feed intake, and feed efficiency from d 15 to 35 compared with broilers fed SDP to d 14. Liveability was improved (P < 0.05) in broilers consuming SDP either for 14 d or continuously throughout the experiment compared with control broilers. Spray-dried granular plasma was more effective than spray-dried powder plasma from d 0 to 14. The results of this experiment confirmed that SDP improved broiler growth rate, feed intake, feed efficiency, and minimized enteric challenge associated with necrotic enteritis with maximal protection afforded by continuous feeding. The response to SDP was independent of age of the broiler.  相似文献

Respiratory function in the restrained, conscious domestic fowl was measured using a non-invasive technique and computer aided analysis to examine respiratory flow, and in-dwelling arterial catheters to monitor blood carbon dioxide levels. The effects of two low ranges of inspiratory carbon dioxide (0.2 to 1.0 per cent and 0.25 to 2.25 per cent) were studied, simulating levels of carbon dioxide that may occur in commercial poultry units and representing a mild environmental stress for the birds. A linear increase in minute volume with inspiratory carbon dioxide was observed, due primarily to increases in tidal volume. Arterial carbon dioxide (PaCO2) tension also rose as the inspiratory carbon dioxide concentration was raised, but higher inspiratory carbon dioxide levels were required to affect significantly blood carbon dioxide concentration than to modify respiratory parameters. Variation was observed in the individual bird's response to carbon dioxide (bird X carbon dioxide interaction), suggesting that resting values of the respiratory parameters measured were important in determining the bird's ventilatory response to carbon dioxide.  相似文献

Ninety-five horses with sarcoids were subjected to three types of treatment: surgical excision (conventional or carbon dioxide laser), cryotherapy or local BCG vaccination. The type of treatment was selected on the basis of the size, location and clinical appearance of the tumours. The choice between conventional and laser excision was empirical. A successful outcome was obtained in 11 of 14 (79 per cent) of the horses treated by cryosurgery, 18 of 27 (67 per cent) treated by BCG vaccination, 18 of 22 (82 per cent) treated by conventional excision, and 20 of 28 (71 per cent) treated with a carbon dioxide laser. For both excision methods, rigorous measures were taken to avoid autoinoculation and to ensure a wide margin of normal skin. The probability of local recurrence after excision was significantly higher for large sarcoids and sarcoids which had previously failed to respond to treatment. In 10 of the 31 horses with remaining sarcoids, some or all of the untreated sarcoids were observed to regress spontaneously.  相似文献

Clinical results, complications and the outcome of using either a carbon dioxide (CO?) laser, diode laser or electrocautery (ELEC) for resection of the soft palate with an extended palatoplasty technique in brachycephalic dogs with upper airway obstructive syndrome were compared. Dogs were randomly allocated into three groups (n=20 in each group): ELEC, diode and CO? groups. The palatoplasty was made at the rostral aspect of the tonsils. A respiratory clinical score, ranging from 0 (normal) to 4 (cyanosis), was attributed to each dog before surgery and at 0 hours, 24 hours, two weeks and six months after surgery. A favourable outcome was defined as a one point or greater decrease in score 24 hours after surgery. The proportion of dogs with a favourable outcome was significantly higher in the CO? (n=15) and ELEC groups (n=15) in comparison with the diode group (n=7) (OR=5.6, 95 per cent confidence interval 1.4 to 21.9). Surgical time was significantly shorter (P<0.001; mean [sd] 510 [178] seconds), and bleeding was less common (P<0.001; 30 per cent of cases) in the CO? group. Complications were most frequent with the diode group (two cases of death and two cases of tracheostomy). The final outcome for all groups (n=57) was considered excellent in 79 per cent of cases and was considered good in 21 per cent.  相似文献
