ObjectivesThe objectives of this study were (1) to assess the potential effect of body weight (BW), age, and gender on the most commonly used echocardiographic and conventional Doppler variables in a large population of healthy Cavalier King Charles Spaniels (CKCS), and (2) to establish the corresponding reference intervals (RI).Animals134 healthy adult CKCS.MethodsUltrasound examinations were performed by trained observers in awake dogs. M-mode variables included left ventricular (LV) end-diastolic and end-systolic diameters, LV free wall and interventricular septal thicknesses at end-diastole and end-systole, and LV fractional shortening (FS%). The left atrium (LA) and aortic (Ao) diameters were measured using a 2D method, and the LA/Ao was calculated. Pulsed-wave Doppler variables included peak systolic aortic and pulmonary flow velocities, mitral E and A waves, and E/A ratio. Effects of BW, age, and gender on these 15 variables were tested using a general linear model, and RIs were determined by applying the statistical procedures recommended by the Clinical and Laboratory Standards Institute.ResultsA significant BW effect was observed for all variables, except LA/Ao, FS%, and mitral E/A ratio. A significant but negligible effect of gender and age was also observed for 5/15 and 4/15 of the tested variables, respectively. Only the BW effect on M-mode variables was considered as clinically relevant and the corresponding regression-based RIs were calculated.ConclusionsBody weight should be taken into account when interpreting echocardiographic values in CKCS, except for LA/Ao, FS%, and mitral E/A ratio.  相似文献

IntroductionDilated cardiomyopathy (DCM) in dogs has been associated with feeding of grain-free (GF), legume-rich diets. Some dogs with presumed diet-associated DCM have shown improved myocardial function and clinical outcomes following a change in diet and standard medical therapy.HypothesisPrior GF (pGF) diet influences reverse cardiac remodeling and clinical outcomes in dogs with DCM and congestive heart failure (CHF).Animals and methodsA retrospective study was performed with 67 dogs with DCM and CHF for which diet history was known. Dogs were grouped by diet into pGF and grain-inclusive (GI) groups. Dogs in the pGF group were included if diet change was a component of therapy. Survival was analyzed using Kaplan–Meier curves and the Cox proportional-hazards model.ResultsThe median survival time was 344 days for pGF dogs vs. 253 days for GI dogs (P = 0.074). Statistically significant differences in median survival were identified when the analysis was limited to dogs surviving longer than one week (P = 0.033). Prior GF dogs had a significantly worse outcome the longer a GF diet was fed prior to diagnosis (P = 0.004) or if they were diagnosed at a younger age (P = 0.017). Prior GF dogs showed significantly greater improvement in normalized left ventricular internal diastolic diameter (P = 0.038) and E-point septal separation (P = 0.031) measurements and significant decreases in their furosemide (P = 0.009) and pimobendan (P < 0.005) dosages over time compared to GI dogs.ConclusionsPrior GF dogs that survived at least one week after diagnosis of DCM, treatment of CHF, and diet change had better clinical outcomes and showed reverse ventricular remodeling compared to GI dogs.  相似文献

IntroductionThere is little published regarding the association between canine cardiovascular disease and the hepatic system. The objective of the study was to evaluate the relationship between hepatic parameters, survival, and disease stages of dogs with either dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM) or degenerative valvular disease (DVD).Animals, materials, and methodsRetrospective study analyzing hepatic parameters in dogs with DVD or DCM in American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine stage B or C and healthy control dogs. Associations between liver parameters, type and stage of disease, and survival were investigated.ResultsNinety-nine dogs were included in the study: 61 DVD, 22 DCM, and 16 controls. Differences in liver parameter concentrations between DCM, DVD, and disease stages were found. Univariate analysis identified alanine aminotransferase (P < 0.001), aspartate aminotransferase (P = 0.02), and total bilirubin (P = 0.005) as predictors of mortality. In the multivariate analysis, total bilirubin remained an independent predictor of mortality.ConclusionsThe observed differences between DCM, DVD, and disease stages are likely consistent with disease-specific hemodynamics and progression of disease. This and the role of total bilirubin as an independent predictor for mortality indicate that in dogs with DVD and DCM the cardiovascular–hepatic interaction might be of relevance for disease progression and outcome, as reported for humans with cardiac disease. Further studies into the role of hepatic function in canine cardiac disease are required.  相似文献

Introduction/objectivesThe objectives were to conduct a survey of cardiologists on their recent experiences with cats that have dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM) and to retrospectively review individual cases of feline DCM.Animals, materials and methodsPart one: A survey was distributed to cardiologists with questions regarding caseload and clinical management of cats with DCM diagnosed over the past two years. Part two: Cardiologists completing the survey were invited to submit data from cats recently diagnosed with DCM. Data on signalment, clinical signs, diet, echocardiographic measurements and outcome were recorded.ResultsPart one: From 52 completed surveys, many cardiologists responded that measuring and supplementing taurine and recommending a diet change in cats with DCM are common practices. Few (15%) cardiologists reported an increase in the number of feline DCM cases over the past two years, although some had cases that improved even if taurine deficiency was not present. Part two: Twenty of 37 (54%) cats ate low pea/lentil (low PL) diets, and 14/37 (38%) ate high PL diets at the time of diagnosis; three had incomplete diet information. Two of 13 cats (15%) in which taurine was measured had levels below the reference range. After adjusting for other variables, cats eating high PL diets that changed diets after diagnosis had a significantly longer survival time than that of cats eating high PL diets that did not change diets after diagnosis (P = 0.025).ConclusionsAdditional research is warranted to determine whether there could be a possible association between diet and DCM in cats.  相似文献

We studied the effect of a small volume of 7.2% hypertonic saline solution (HSS) or HSS with 6% dextran 70 (HSD) on hemodynamic status, especially on cardiac contractility, in anesthetized dogs using the left ventricular end-systolic volume index (ESVI) and ejection fraction (EF), which can be obtained in noninvasive echocardiography. In the present study, the mean values of ESVI were unaffected by HSS and HSD infusion, whereas the left ventricular end-diastolic volume index (EDVI) was markedly and significant increased. As a result of the changes in EDVI but not in ESVI, EF increased transiently and significantly in the HSS and HSD group, whereas no such significant change was observed in the dogs that received isotonic saline solution. In addition, as a result of the increases in cardiac index but not arterial pressure, system vascular resistances (SVR) decreased transiently and significantly in the HSS and HSD groups, whereas no such significant change was observed in the ISS group. Therefore, the positive inotropic effects of HSS and HSD may be attributable to the increase in left ventricular preload and decreases in SVR rather than direct changes in myocardial contractility.  相似文献

IntroductionDiastolic dysfunction is an early clinical feature of feline hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM). The left ventricular filling in early diastole is facilitated by the diastolic intraventricular pressure gradient (IVPG). The study objectives were to evaluate color Doppler M-mode-derived IVPG calculation in cats as a non-invasive assessment of the left ventricular relaxation property to determine the normal ranges of peak IVPG in cats and investigate the influence of left ventricular function and heart rate (HR).AnimalsOne hundred and six client-owned apparently healthy cats.MethodsProspective cross-sectional study. Quantitative analysis of color Doppler M-mode images was used to estimate total and segmental IVPGs non-invasively.ResultsThe total IVPG was 0.76 mmHg (95% reference interval (RI): 0.28–1.29 mmHg), the basal IVPG 0.34 mmHg (95% RI: 0.07–0.63 mmHg), and the mid-apical IVPG 0.42 mmHg (95% RI: 0.15–0.71 mmHg). Total and segmental IVPG increased with HR (P < 0.003), while segmental percent IVPG was HR independent. A short isovolumic relaxation time (IVRT) and a high mitral annular velocity in early diastole were associated with an increase in total IVPG (P = 0.008 and P = 0.009, respectively) adjusted for HR. An increase in IVPG was associated with an increase in mitral inflow velocity (P < 0.001).ConclusionsFeline IVPGs increase with HR and a short IVRT, which was believed to be a normal physiologic adrenergic response associated with an increased sympathetic tone. Future studies of segmental IVPG changes in feline HCM are needed to evaluate the clinical applicability of color Doppler M-mode estimated IVPGs in feline cardiology.  相似文献

A comparative slaughter experiment was conducted with 28 Spanish kids (BW = 20.6 kg) fed a hay-based diet to determine the effects of supplemental energy and protein on growth rate, body composition, and ruminal and blood metabolites. After 84 d, kids were harvested, digesta contents removed and empty body weighed and ground. Samples were freeze-dried and analyzed for DM, CP, ether extract, ash, and gross energy. All kids had increased BW gains. However, unsupplemented kids lost empty BW and weight of all body components except ash. Kids supplemented with energy or protein increased (P<0.05) empty BW, body water, protein, fat, ash, and gross energy when compared with unsupplemented kids. The percentages of body water and ash decreased (P<0.05) when supplemental energy or protein was fed. The percentage of body protein was reduced (P<0.05) by supplemental energy and unaffected (P=0.81) by supplemental protein. Supplemental energy reduced (P<0.05) ruminal acetate and increased (P<0.05) propionate and butyrate. Supplemental protein increased (P<0.05) concentrations of ruminal ammonia N, plasma urea N, and all ruminal volatile fatty acids. Regression equations suggest that intake of 144 kcal of ME and 6.0 g of CP per kilogram of empty BW0.75 are necessary to maintain empty BW.  相似文献

Within a given free-range flock, some hens prefer to spend the majority of their time in the shed (stayers), while others frequently access the range (rangers). Laying performance has been associated not only with the development of these sub-populations but also with different body weights (BW). The purpose of this study was to determine if range usage, BW or a combination of both is associated with energy metabolism and as such contribute to improved hen performance. Forty-eight Lohmann Brown hens at 74 wk of age were selected from a commercial free-range farm based on their BW and range usage over a 56-week period. Using a 2 × 2 factorial arrangement, hens were either classified as heavy (mean ± SEM; 2.01 ± 0.02 kg, n = 24) or light (1.68 ± 0.01 kg, n = 24), and also classified as rangers (accessed the range for 84.1% of available days, 242 ± 3.75 d; n = 24) or stayers (accessed the range for 7.17% of available days; 23.4 ± 6.08 d, n = 24). Stayers had significantly higher metabolizable energy (ME) intake per metabolic BW per d (0.852 vs. 0.798 MJ/kg BW0.75 per d; P = 0.025), higher heat production (0.637 vs. 0.607 MJ/kg BW0.75 per d; P = 0.005), higher heat increment (0.267 vs. 0.237 MJ/kg BW0.75 per d; P = 0.005) and retained more nitrogen (1.59 vs. 1.46 g/hen per d; P = 0.023) compared to the rangers. Light hens had significantly higher metabolic energy intake per metabolic BW (0.854 vs. 0.796 MJ/kg BW0.75 per d; P = 0.018), net energy (NE) intake (0.595 vs. 0.551 MJ/kg BW0.75 per d; P = 0.032), and retained energy (0.225 vs. 0.181 MJ/kg BW0.75 per d; P = 0.032), as well as lower heat production (0.936 vs. 1.003 MJ/hen per d; P = 0.002) compared to heavier hens. An interaction was observed across levels of analysis i.e. between light stayers and light rangers. The light rangers had significantly higher NE intake compared to the light stayers (9.77 vs. 9.27 MJ/kg BW0.75 per d; P = 0.024). In conclusion, light hens were more energy efficient compared to heavy hens. Moreover, light rangers had a more efficient feed utilisation compared to the light stayers.  相似文献

Background: Cardiac troponin I (cTnI) is useful for detection of cardiac myocyte damage, but its efficacy in detecting various stages of dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM) in Doberman Pinschers is unclear. Objectives: To evaluate the diagnostic value of cTnI in various stages of DCM in Dobermans. Animals: Six hundred and fifty‐three cTnI measurements of 336 Doberman Pinschers. Methods: Using a longitudinal study design, staging of the disease was based upon 24‐hour‐ambulatory‐ECG (Holter) and echocardiography. A total of 447 cTnI measurements were performed in 264 healthy Dobermans, and 206 cTnI measurements in 75 Dobermans with cardiomyopathy. Eighty‐eight cTnI samples were from dogs with >100 ventricular premature contractions (VPCs)/24 hour, but without echocardiographic changes (“VPC group”). Additional 19 samples originated from dogs with only echocardiographic changes (“ECHO group”), and 56 samples from dogs with both VPCs and echocardiographic changes (“VPC plus ECHO group”). Twenty samples were from dogs with clinical signs (“clinical group”). The group “incipient” included 23 dogs, that were considered to be normal according to Holter and echocardiography at the time of the exam, but that developed DCM within 1.5 years. Results: cTnI values of dogs in all disease groups, including the “incipient” (0.30 ± 0.20) and “VPC group” (0.36 ± 0.34), were significantly (P= .04, P < .001) higher than the control group (0.07 ± 0.16). A cut‐off value of >0.22 ng/mL had a sensitivity of 79.5% and a specificity of 84.4% to detect all forms of cardiomyopathy. Conclusions and Clinical Importance: cTnI measurement is a valuable diagnostic test that can detect cardiomyopathy in dogs that are otherwise clinically normal.  相似文献

This retrospective study reports the survival time [onset of congestive heart failure (CHF) to death from any cause] of 21 dogs with mitral regurgitation (MR) and CHF treated with a combination of furosemide, angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitor (ACEI, benazepril, or enalapril), pimobendan, spironolactone, and amlodipine. Baseline echocardiographic data: end-systolic and end-diastolic volume indices (ESVI and EDVI), left atrium to aorta ratio (LA/Ao), and regurgitant fraction (RF) are reported. Median survival time (MST) was 430 d. Initial dosage of furosemide (P = 0.0081) and LA/Ao (P = 0.042) were negatively associated with survival. Baseline echocardiographic indices (mean ± standard deviation) were 40.24 ± 16.76 for ESVI, 161.48 ± 44.49 mL/m(2) for EDVI, 2.11 ± 0.75 for LA/Ao, and 64.71 ± 16.85% for RF. Combining furosemide, ACEI, pimobendan, spironolactone, and amlodipine may result in long survival times in dogs with MR and CHF. Severity of MR at onset of CHF is at least moderate.  相似文献

IntroductionCompare three methods of obtaining linear left ventricular dimensions within the same Doberman Pinscher (DP).AnimalsOne hundred and thirty-nine client-owned DP.Materials and MethodsLinear left ventricular dimensions were measured using two-dimensional short-axis (Sx-2D), motion-mode short-axis (Sx-MM), and motion-mode long-axis (Lx-MM) methods, then left ventricular volumes were obtained using monoplane Simpson's method of discs (SMOD). A Friedman test with Dunn's multiple comparisons was used to compare differences between methods. Bias and correlation were evaluated via Bland-Altman and Spearman's correlation. Sensitivity and specificity for diagnosing occult dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM) compared to SMOD were determined. Coefficients of variation (CVs) were calculated for intra- and inter-observer measurement variability.ResultsThere were significant differences between all linear dimensions in diastole and systole. Short-axis 2D measurements had significant bias compared with Sx-MM (diastole +1.19 mm, systole +1.65 mm) and Lx-MM (diastole +4.36 mm, systole +3.87 mm) as did Sx-MM compared with Lx-MM (diastole +3.17 mm, systole +2.22 mm). All linear dimensions had a moderate positive correlation with SMOD. The sensitivity and specificity of linear measurements to detect DCM were: Sx-2D (sensitivity 72.0%, specificity 88.5%), Sx-MM (sensitivity 52.0%, specificity 92.0%), and Lx-MM (sensitivity 37.5%, specificity 99.1%). All methods had acceptably low CV for intra- and inter-observer measurement variability.ConclusionsResults of this study suggest that linear measurements are repeatable and correlate with reference standard; however, there is a significant bias between measurements, and they should not be used interchangeably.  相似文献

ObjectiveTo compare between blind and smartphone-based endoscope-assisted techniques for endotracheal intubation in rabbits.Study designProspective clinical study.AnimalsA total of 34 rabbits.MethodsRabbits were assigned to four groups: intubation by a veterinary anesthesiologist (VA) or an exotic pet medicine specialist (EPS) using blind or endoscope-assisted techniques. Propofol dose, number of attempts until successful intubation, total time for intubation, duration of the successful attempt and occurrence of lingual cyanosis/laryngeal lesions were recorded. Data were analyzed by t test, Wilcoxon–Mann–Whitney U test or chi-square test. Pearson correlation for body weight was performed.ResultsThe success rate of blind intubation was 88.9% and 77.8% for VA and EPS, respectively. Propofol dose, total and median number of attempts, total time for intubation and duration of the successful attempt were 3.1 (0–6.2) mg kg–1, 19, 2 (1–5), 79 ± 65 and 30 ± 20 seconds for VA and 1.5 (0–4.5) mg kg–1, 24, 3 (1–5), 136 ± 92 and 38 ± 16 seconds for EPS. The success rate of endoscope-assisted intubation was 87.5% for both operators. Propofol dose, total and median number of attempts, total time for intubation and duration of the successful attempt were 2.5 (1.3–7.4) mg kg–1, 22, 3 (1–5), 170 (65–368) and 46 (22–150) seconds for VA and 3.2 (0–6) mg kg–1, 11, 1 (1–4), 56 (27–432) and 55 (26–79) seconds for EPS. VA performed blind intubation more quickly, propofol dose was lower and cyanosis was less frequent than in the endoscope-assisted group. Conclusions and clinical relevanceBoth techniques were reliable for rabbit endotracheal intubation. Best results were achieved when the operator was experienced in the technique. The smartphone-based endoscope is a useful aid for rabbit intubation.  相似文献

Introduction/objectivesWhether the aldosterone antagonist spironolactone has beneficial survival effects in dogs with dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM) is not known. The primary objective of the study was to evaluate the effect of spironolactone, when added to conventional therapy, on survival time in Doberman pinschers with congestive heart failure (CHF) due to DCM.AnimalsSixty-seven client-owned Doberman pinschers with CHF due to DCM.Materials and methodsThe trial design was prospective, randomized, blinded, and placebo controlled. Dogs were randomized to receive 50–75 mg of spironolactone twice daily (n = 34) or a placebo (n = 33), in addition to standard CHF therapy. Follow-up visits were targeted every one–six weeks until endpoint. Quality-of-life questionnaire and physical examination were performed at every visit, while renal biochemistry, ECG, echocardiography, and thoracic radiography were reassessed as needed. The primary endpoint was time to cardiac death, defined as death or euthanasia from CHF or sudden death.ResultsMedian time to primary endpoint in the spironolactone group (183 days) was not statistically significantly different than that for the placebo group (124 days) (P = 0.254). The development of atrial fibrillation (AF) was significantly less frequent in the spironolactone group (n = 7) than the placebo group (n = 15, P = 0.037).ConclusionsWhile median time to cardiac death in the spironolactone group was not statistically significantly different than that in the placebo group, adding spironolactone to conventional therapy resulted in reduced occurrence of AF.  相似文献

Introduction/objectivesWhether a brachymorphic conformation may lead to electrocardiographic peculiarities diverging from generic reference intervals (RIs) cited in textbooks remains to be established. Therefore, this study aimed at evaluating electrocardiographic variables in one of the most common brachymorphic breed, namely the French Bulldog (FB).Animals, materials and methodsMedical records were retrospectively reviewed to identify healthy FBs ≥1-year-old that underwent an electrocardiogram. The Mann–Whitney U test or the Student's t-test was used to compare continuous variables among male and female dogs, while the χ2 test was used for categorical variables. Spearman's correlation coefficients between electrocardiographic measurements and age and body weight were also calculated. Moreover, electrocardiographic RIs were determined.ResultsEighty healthy FBs were enrolled; their electrocardiographic variables fitted with generic RIs, with the exception of the QRS-complex mean electrical axis (QRS-MEA). The median QRS-MEA value was 43.5° (from −18° to +90°). A QRS-MEA shift was found in 24/80 (30%) dogs; in all cases, it was a left shift (median 26°, from −18° to +39°). Specifically, 20 dogs showed a slight left shift (from +39° to +14°), while four dogs showed a marked one (from +9° to −18°). No meaningful differences were found when comparing electrocardiographic variables between males and females. No significant correlations between electrocardiographic variables and age or body weight were found, with the exceptions of the P-wave amplitude, PQ-interval duration and QT-interval duration.ConclusionsHealthy FBs can present a left shift of QRS-MEA. These data should be considered when interpreting FBs’ electrocardiograms.  相似文献

ObjectivesTaurine plays an important role in maintaining myocardial function. Irish wolfhound dogs (IW) are at risk for dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM), but a relationship between whole blood taurine (WBT) deficiency and DCM has not been established. Our aim was to determine prevalence of WBT deficiency in IW with and without DCM and assess its association with diet.Animals115 privately owned IW.MethodsWhole blood taurine was measured in IW that received cardiovascular examination. Dietary history was recorded; crude protein and energy intake were estimated.ResultsForty-nine (42.6%) had DCM; 66 (57.4%) had no DCM. Dogs with DCM were older ([median; inter-quartile range or IQR] 5.3; 4.3, 6.2 years) than dogs without heart disease (3; 2, 4 years; P < 0.001). There was no significant relationship between WBT concentration and age (P = 0.64). Whole blood taurine was severely reduced (<130 nmol/mL) in 8 dogs (4 with and 4 without DCM) and moderately reduced (130–179.9 nmol/mL) in 32 dogs (12 with DCM and 20 without DCM). Follow up of dogs without DCM revealed that a higher proportion of dogs with any degree of WBT deficiency developed DCM later compared to dogs with normal WBT (P < 0.001).ConclusionsWhole blood taurine deficiency occurred in IW with and without DCM. Based on taurine measurement on a single occasion, there was no clear relationship between low WBT and presence of DCM in this population. Regardless of WBT, DCM affected predominantly older dogs, suggesting a relatively late onset disease in the IW.  相似文献

The study was conducted to determine the effect of supplementation with rice bran (RB) and /or noug seed (Guizotia abyssinica) meal (NSM) on feed intake, digestibility, and body weight (BW) change in hay based feeding of Farta sheep. Twenty five yearling Farta rams with a mean initial BW of 19.23 ± 0.28 kg were used in randomized complete block design arranged into five blocks of five animals. The five dietary treatments that consisted of hay alone (T1), hay + RB (T2), hay + mixture of RB and NSM at a ratio of 1:2 (T3), hay + mixture of RB and NSM at a ratio of 2:1 (T4) and hay + NSM (T5) were randomly assigned to each sheep within a block. The supplements were daily offered at 300 g dry matter (DM) head−1 in two equal parts at 800 and 1600 h. Supplementation improved the total DM and acid detergent fiber (ADF) intake (P < 0.05), organic matter (OM) intake (P < 0.01), crude protein (CP) intake (P < 0.001). The apparent digestibility of DM in T5 was higher (P < 0.05) than in T1 and T2 and that of T4 was also higher (P < 0.05) than in T1. The apparent digestibility of CP in T5 and T4 were higher (P < 0.001) than in T1 and T2 and that of T3 and T2 were also higher (P < 0.001) than for T1. The BW gain of experimental sheep was improved (P < 0.01) by supplementation with NSC (T5) and/or its mixtures with RB (T3 and T4). The results of the study showed that supplementation with either of both mixtures of NSM and RB at 43% of total DM intake promoted better feed intake, digestibility and BW gain in Farta sheep.  相似文献

IntroductionLarge breed (LB) dogs develop dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM) and myxomatous mitral valve disease (MMVD). Echocardiography is required for a definitive diagnosis but is not always available. Our objective was to assess the clinical utility of thoracic radiographs alone and in combination with physical examination and electrocardiography findings for the prediction of clinically important DCM or MMVD in LB dogs.AnimalsFour hundred fifty-five client-owned dogs ≥20 kg with concurrent thoracic radiographs and echocardiogram.Materials and methodsMedical records were reviewed and stored thoracic radiographs and echocardiographic images were measured to classify dogs as normal heart size (NHS), preclinical DCM, clinical DCM, preclinical MMVD (with cardiomegaly), clinical MMVD, or equivocal. Dogs with preclinical MMVD, without cardiomegaly, were classified as NHS. Vertebral heart size (VHS) and vertebral left atrial size (VLAS) were measured. Receiver operating characteristic curves and prediction models were derived.ResultsPrevalence of MMVD (39.3%) was higher than the prevalence of DCM (24.8%), though most MMVD dogs (67.0%) lacked cardiomegaly and were classified as NHS for analysis. The area under the curve for VHS to discriminate between NHS and clinical DCM/MMVD or preclinical DCM/MMVD was 0.861 and 0.712, respectively, while for VLAS, it was 0.891 and 0.722, respectively. Predictive models incorporating physical examination and electrocardiography findings in addition to VHS/VLAS increased area under the curve to 0.978 (NHS vs. clinical DCM/MMVD) and 0.829 (NHS vs. preclinical DCM/MMVD).ConclusionsThoracic radiographs were useful for predicting clinically important DCM or MMVD in LB dogs, with improved discriminatory ability when physical examination abnormalities and arrhythmias were accounted for.  相似文献

IntroductionTo determine whether dogs with atrial fibrillation (AF) are more likely to develop right-sided manifestations of congestive heart failure (R-CHF) than dogs without AF.AnimalsTwo hundred twenty dogs diagnosed with congestive heart failure (CHF) secondary to degenerative mitral valve disease (DMVD, n = 155) or dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM, n = 65) at a referral institution.MethodsMedical records were reviewed to extract relevant clinical and echocardiographic data.ResultsFifty dogs had AF at the time of CHF diagnosis, including 17/155 (11.0%) dogs with DMVD and 33/65 (50.8%) dogs with DCM. Sixty dogs had R-CHF evidenced by cavitary effusions. Among DMVD dogs, R-CHF occurred in 13/17 (76.5%) dogs with AF compared with 10/138 (7.2%) dogs without AF; among DCM dogs, R-CHF occurred in 24/33 (72.7%) dogs with AF compared with 13/32 (40.6%) dogs without AF. Dogs with AF were more likely to manifest R-CHF signs than dogs without AF (p < 0.0001 for DMVD; p = 0.0125 for DCM). The presence of AF, diagnosis of DCM, and moderate to severe tricuspid regurgitation were associated with R-CHF in multivariate analysis. AF was the strongest predictor of R-CHF (odds ratio, 14.44; 95% confidence interval, 5.75–36.26).ConclusionsDogs with AF are more likely to manifest R-CHF than dogs without AF. Cavitary effusions are an expected finding in approximately three-quarters of dogs with AF and CHF secondary to either DCM or DMVD.  相似文献

BackgroundUnderstanding biological variation is important when establishing or using currently published reference intervals (RIs) to evaluate hematological and blood chemical analysis results. Population based RIs may not be sensitive enough to identify clinically significant changes in individuals when the intraindividual variation is lower than the interindividual variation. This is the first study with the aim to investigate the biological variation of hematological and biochemical analytes and then to calculate the reference change values (RCVs) in ferrets.MethodsThis retrospective study analyzed blood test results of 13 ferrets that have been tested every year for 7 years. Intraindividual and interindividual coefficients of variation for each analyte were calculated using restricted maximum likelihood that is suitable for unbalanced design since five ferrets died earlier, before determining the index of individuality (IoI) and RCV.ResultsNo analytes had IoI lower than 0.6. The IoI of mean corpuscular hemoglobin (MCH), calcium, blood urea nitrogen (BUN), alanine aminotransferase (ALT), alkaline phosphatase (ALP), total protein, albumin, and globulin were between 0.6 and 1.4. The IoI of red blood cell count, hemoglobin, hematocrit, mean corpuscular volume, MCH concentration (MCHC), white blood cell count, lymphocytes, monocytes, neutrophils, eosinophils, basophils, sodium, potassium, phosphate, glucose, creatinine and amylase were higher than 1.4. In this study, the RCVs varied from 6.87% (sodium) to 391.46% (basophils). Conclusions and clinical relevanceThe results of this study indicate that population based RIs are appropriate to evaluate most analytes in this study. Population based RIs should be used with caution to evaluate MCH, calcium, BUN, ALT, ALP, total protein, albumin, and globulin. The hematological and blood chemical RCVs calculated in this study can assist in diagnosing diseases, and monitoring and evaluating the performance of long-term treatments.  相似文献

SUMMARY: Effectiveness of restricted and desired gains index selection to change growth and body composition was tested in mice. Replicate lines were selected within full-sib families as follows: RI, restricted index to increase 12-week body weight (BW) and hind carcass weight (HC) with no change in right epididymal fat pad weight (EF); DG, desired gains index to increase BW and HC and decrease EF and right subcutaneous fat pad weight (SF) in designated proportions; RS, random selection. Realized heritabilities of index units, converted to an individual basis, were 0.65 ± 0.17 in RI and 0.50 ± 0.23 in DG, which exceeded the respective base population estimates of 0.32 ± 0.11 and 0.37 ±0.11, calculated as twice the regression of son on sire. Realized genetic correlation between the two selection index units of 0.87 ± 0.12 was not significantly different from the base population estimate of 0.91 ± 0.21. Realized correlated responses in component traits of the indices did not agree closely with expectation. Possible explanations for these discrepancies include genetic drift, weak selection intensity, discrepancies between estimated and true genetic parameters and changes in genetic parameters due to selection. Antagonistic selection for multiple traits may magnify the importance of these factors.
