BackgroundSighthounds have high echocardiographic (ECHO) left ventricular volumes. Establishing robust breed-specific ECHO reference intervals (RI) for screening is important. End-diastolic volume index (EDVI), end-systolic volume index (ESVI) and ejection fraction (EF) reference ranges derived by Simpson's method of discs are not available for deerhounds. The influence of sex or body weight (BW) on left ventricular diameter during diastole (LVDd) and systole (LVDs) has never been reported.ObjectivesProspectively determine ECHO RI and assess prevalence of dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM) in healthy UK deerhounds.AnimalsNinety-nine deerhounds.MethodsDeerhounds scored on ECHO and ECG variables then classified as normal (NORM), equivocal (EQUIV) or affected (AFF) with DCM. Fifty-nine NORM deerhounds used to determine ECHO RI.ResultsPrevalence of DCM was 21.6%. There were significant differences in BW (P<0.001), LVDd (P<0.001) and LVDs (P<0.05) between female and male deerhounds. Cut-off values for EDVI (≥140.2 mL/m2: 79% sensitivity/97% specificity), ESVI (≥71.9 mL/m2: 94.7% sensitivity/94.2% specificity) and EF (≤42.1%: 84.2% sensitivity/92.8% specificity) were proposed to help diagnose DCM. The most reliable ECHO variables to identify AFF dogs were LVDs indexed to BW by allometric scaling and ESVI; one of the least reliable was sphericity index. Ventricular arrhythmias (VA) were identified in 13.6% of the population, with the highest prevalence in AFF deerhounds (42%).ConclusionsPreclinical DCM in deerhounds is common and VA may be associated with DCM. Healthy deerhounds have higher LVDd, LVDs and EDVI compared with other breeds. This study provides ECHO RIs for deerhounds; sex or BW RIs should be used when screening.  相似文献

Background: M‐mode is the echocardiographic gold standard to diagnose dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM) in dogs, whereas Simpson's method of discs (SMOD) is the preferred method to detect echocardiographic evidence of disease in humans. Objectives: To establish reference values for SMOD and to compare those with M‐mode measurements. Animals: Nine hundred and sixty‐nine examinations of 471 Doberman Pinschers. Methods: Using a prospective longitudinal study design. Reference values for SMOD were established using 75 healthy Doberman Pinschers >8 years old with <50 ventricular premature contractions (VPCs) in 24 hours. The ability of the new SMOD cut‐off values, normalized to body surface area (BSA), for left ventricular end‐diastolic volume (LVEDV/BSA >95 mL/m2) and end‐systolic volume (LVESV/BSA > 55 mL/m2) to detect echocardiographic changes in Doberman Pinschers with DCM was compared with currently recommended M‐mode values. Dogs with elevated SMOD values but normal M‐mode measurements were followed‐up using a prospective longitudinal study design. Results: At the final examination 175 dogs were diagnosed with DCM according to both methods (M‐mode and SMOD). At previous examinations, M‐mode values were abnormal in 142 examinations only, whereas all 175 SMOD already had detected changes. Additionally, 19 of 154 dogs with >100 VPCs/24 hours and normal M‐mode values had abnormal SMOD measurement. Six dogs with increased SMOD measurements remained healthy at several follow‐up examinations (classified as false positive); in 24 dogs with increased SMOD measurements, no follow‐up examinations were available (classified as unclear). Conclusions and Clinical Importance: SMOD measurements are superior to M‐mode to detect early echocardiographic changes in Dobermans with occult DCM.  相似文献

The purpose of this prospective study was to determine comparability of left ventricular (LV) M-mode echocardiographic indices derived from right parasternal long-axis and short-axis imaging planes. In 104 dogs (37 healthy dogs and 67 dogs with heart disease), LV M-mode echocardiograms were recorded from both long-axis and short-axis views and interventricular septum thickness (IVS), left ventricular internal dimensions (LVD), left ventricular posterior wall thickness (LVPW), and LV shortening fraction (FS) were measured. Statistical analysis included paired t-test and graphical analysis to assess agreement between the two methods of data acquisition. Mean LVD in systole and diastole and mean IVS in systole were significantly (P<0.001) larger when measured from short-axis recordings compared to long-axis measurements. An increased magnitude of measurement resulted in increased differences between the methods for LV dimensions and fractional shortening. Differences between the two methods were small and within clinically acceptable limits in normal dogs. However, in 23 (34%) of the dogs with cardiac abnormality, one or more LV M-mode derived dimension obtained from one imaging plane did not agree sufficiently closely with the same measure from the other plane. Only for measurement of FS was there good agreement between methods in dogs with cardiac disease. Therefore, with the exception of FS, data gained from LV short-axis and long-axis M-mode recordings should not be used interchangeably in dogs with cardiac disease.  相似文献

IntroductionAlthough challenging, predicting outcomes in dogs with myxomatous mitral valve disease (MMVD) is of importance to owners and veterinarians. Our aim was to compare the prognostic value of selected one-, two-, and three-dimensional and Doppler echocardiographic methods to predict cardiac-related and all-cause mortality in MMVD dogs. We hypothesize that three-dimensional methods would better predict prognosis than one- and two-dimensional methods.AnimalsOne-hundred thirty-eight privately-owned dogs with MMVD.Materials and methodsCox proportional Hazard analyses and Kaplan–Meier curves were used to investigate the predictive value of 14 variables; left atrial (LA) volume indexed to body weight (BW) measured by real-time three-dimensional echocardiography (RT3DE) and calculated using Simpson's modified method of discs (SMOD) and the area-length method; LA diameter in short-axis and long-axis to aortic in short-axis ratio, effective regurgitant orifice area indexed to body surface area measured in RT3DE en face view and calculated using four-chamber (4Ch) and two-chamber views alone or in combination; percentage increase in left ventricular end-diastolic and systolic internal diameters; fractional shortening; E wave velocity; regurgitant jet area/LA area.ResultsAll 14 variables were significantly predictive of cardiac-related mortality, and 11 were predictive of all-cause mortality. The prognosis was best predicted by LA volume/BW estimated by SMOD or RT3DE, consistently showing the highest predictive value in all analyses.ConclusionsLeft atrial volume calculated by SMOD showed a similar predictive value compared to RT3DE. Performing SMOD from apical 4Ch images should be considered an alternative to RT3DE for echocardiographic examinations where prognostication of disease outcome is sought.  相似文献

The objective of this study was to determine the intra- and inter-observer variability of echocardiographic measurements in dogs. Four observers with different levels of experience in echocardiography performed 192 echocardiographic examinations of six dogs on four different days. The lowest within- and between-day coefficients of variation (CV) (%) were 13.8 and 5.2 for the right ventricle in diastole, 8.9 and 4.5 for the interventricular septal thickness in diastole (6.3 and 7.0 in systole), 7.7 and 9.4 for the left ventricular free-wall thickness in diastole (8.1 and 5.2 in systole), 3.1 and 5.0 for the left ventricular end-diastolic diameter (6.2 and 7.0 for end-systolic diameter), 10.2 and 10.8 for the left ventricular shortening fraction, and 8.2 and 9.8 for the left atrium/aorta ratio, respectively. Most of these lowest CVs were observed by the two most experienced observers. Conversely, all maximum values were obtained with the two less experienced observers. These differences in observer-dependent variability may considerably influence the minimum number of animals required to detect a treatment-associated change in echocardiographic variables.  相似文献

ObjectivesTo compare dimensions and shortening fraction (SF) of the left ventricle (LV) obtained from two-dimensional (2D) and M-mode imaging of short and long-axis views.Animals40 healthy, adult German Shepherd dogs.MethodsLeft ventricular measurements were obtained using 4 echocardiographic methods: M-mode in short and long-axis and 2D imaging in short and long-axis. The methods were compared by studying the effects of imaging mode and axis on LV parameters, taking into account the influence of weight and gender.ResultsMean LV end-diastolic diameter was greater in short-axis views. However, this difference was not considered clinically relevant. Mean SF was higher when derived from 2D measurements with poor agreement among methods. A combined influence of axis, gender, and weight was observed on interventricular septal thickness in end diastole with poor agreement among methods.ConclusionsSome LV parameters were significantly affected by mode and axis, either in isolation or in combination with weight and gender, although the differences observed were not always clinically relevant. These findings show that using the different echocardiographic methods interchangeably to assess LV dimensions should be done with caution.  相似文献

IntroductionThe objective of the study was to evaluate the accuracy of two- and three-dimensional (2D, 3D) transthoracic echocardiography (TTE), 2D transesophageal echocardiography, and computed tomography angiography (CTA) compared with cardiac magnetic resonance imaging (CMR) in normal dogs and to assess repeatability of 2D and 3D TTE for the assessment of left ventricular (LV) and left atrial (LA) dimensions.AnimalsThe study was performed on six healthy dogs.Materials and MethodsTransthoracic echocardiography, transesophageal echocardiography, CTA, and CMR were performed on each dog. Right ventricular (RV) and LV volumes (in systole and diastole), ejection fraction (EF), and LA and right atrial (RA) volumes were assessed. Repeatability and intrarater and interrater measurements of variability were quantified by average coefficient of variation (CV) for 2D and 3D TTE.ResultsNo clinically relevant differences in LV volume were detected between CMR and all modalities. Importantly, 3D TTE had the lowest CV (6.45%), correlated with (rs = 0.62, p = 0.01), and had the highest overlap in distribution with CMR (OVL >80%). Left ventricular EF and LA size via CTA compared best with CMR and RV and RA volumes were best estimated by 3D TTE. Assessment of LV and LA volumes via 3D TTE had moderate repeatability (15–21%) compared with LV M-mode measurements and 2D LA-to-aortic ratio (<10%), respectively. For LV size, interrater CV for 3D TTE (19.4%) was lower than 2D TTE (23.1%).ConclusionsMeasurements of LV, RV, and RA volumes via 3D TTE and LA volume and LV EF assessed by CTA compared best with CMR. Three-dimensional echocardiography had lower interrater and intrarater CV compared with 2D TTE.  相似文献

Donkey (Equus asinus), the cheapest form of agricultural power in Egypt, is used principally as draught or pack animals and may also be ridden, or used for threshing, raising water, milling, and other work. The aim of the present study was to provide B-mode and M-mode echocardiographic reference ranges from a sample of population of donkeys (E. asinus) based on the probability theory and statistics. In the present study, B-mode and 2-dimensional guided M-mode echocardiography were performed on 44 clinically healthy donkeys (E. asinus) (22 males and 22 females), without any neither clinical nor echocardiographic evidence of cardiovascular diseases, aged 2–25 year old, and weighed 150–350 kg. The echocardiographic dimensions, including interventricular septum thickness at end diastole, interventricular septum thickness at end systole, left ventricular internal diameter at end diastole, left ventricular internal diameter at end systole, left ventricular posterior wall thickness at end diastole, and left ventricular posterior wall thickness at end systole were assessed. The cardiac function indices, including end diastolic volume, end systolic volume, stroke volume, ejection fraction, and fractional shortening were also measured. B-mode and guided M-mode echocardiographic examination of healthy donkeys revealed that both the interventricular septum thickness and the left ventricular posterior free wall were greater during systole than diastole. However, the left ventricular dimension during diastole was greater than systole. Furthermore, the recorded data of cardiac function indices, including end diastolic volume, end systolic volume, stroke volume, ejection fraction, and fractional shortening using B-mode echocardiography were closer to those recorded by guided M-mode echocardiography. To our knowledge, this is the first Egyptian study to report the echocardiographic reference ranges of donkeys (E. asinus) based on the probability theory and statistics, the coefficient of variation. The results of the present study can be used as standard and reference values for further echocardiographic studies in donkeys and represent a step in the identification, interpretation, and evaluation of cardiovascular disorders in such animals.  相似文献

Echocardiographic examinations were performed on 25 normal healthy cats placed in left lateral recumbency. The cats were representative of serveral breeds, consisted of 12 males and 13 females, and weighed between 2 and 6.5 kg. Twelve measurements from the echocardiograms of each cat were made for the purpose of compiling a small data base (reference values). These measurements included wall thicknesses, luminal dimensions, and contractile indices. Left ventricular wall thickness averaged 0.37 +/- 0.08 cm, and the septal wall thickness averaged 0.45 +/- 0.09 cm. The average left ventricular lumen in diastole was 1.48 +/- 0.26 cm, and in systole, it was 0.88 +/- 0.24 cm, which resulted in an average shortening fraction of 41 +/- 7.3%. Velocity of circumferential shortening, an index of contractility, averaged 2.86 +/- 0.78 cm. In eight additional cats, both ventricles were catheterized for echographic chamber identification and then cineangiographic procedures. Then these cats were euthanatized, and postmortem measurements were compared with echocardiographic and cineangiographic measurements. According to the three methods of determining wall thickness, differences were less than 15%, where the range of deviations was between 0 and 0.5 mm and the average deviation was -0.01 +/- 0.26 mm.  相似文献

The goal of this study was to determine via echocardiography the size of the left and right cardiac ventricles and the width of the interventricular septum and the left free ventricular wall in 51 healthy cows. The heart regions were examined in standing cows using a 3.0 Mhz sector transducer in 2-D-Mode. The dimensions of the heart were measured in the caudal long and short axes on the right side and in the caudal and cranial long axes on the left. The diameter of the ventricles was determined in a plane immediately beneath the mitral or tricuspid valves and that of the aorta and pulmonary artery in a plane immediately above the aortic and pulmonary valves, respectively. At the end of the study, all of the cows were slaughtered, the hearts were removed and the same parameters were determined using a tape measure. Results of in vivo and in vitro measurements were compared. In the right caudal long axis, the diameters of the left ventricle during both diastole (x +/- s = 7.0 +/- 0.73 cm) and systole (4.5 +/- 0.69 cm) were larger than those of the right ventricle during diastole (4.1 +/- 1.02 cm) and systole (3.6 +/- 0.98 cm). The diameter of the ventricles during diastole was larger than that during systole. Analogous results were obtained in both other axes. The diameter of the right ventricle during systole was larger when measured in the right caudal long axis (3.6 +/- 0.98 cm) than in the right caudal short axis (3.2 +/- 1.15 cm). This was also true for measurements obtained during diastole. The interventricular septum and the left ventricular wall were thicker during systole than during diastole. The diameter of the pulmonary artery was larger during diastole (5.6 +/- 0.82 cm) than systole (5.2 +/- 0.84 cm). The diameter of the aorta was smaller than that of the pulmonary artery and did not change significantly during diastole (4.9 +/- 0.92 cm) and systole (4.8 +/- 0.80 cm). The diameters of both ventricles measured at post mortem were smaller than those measured in vivo during diastole and larger than those measured during systole. There were no significant differences between the measurements performed twice, three days apart, in 11 of the cows.  相似文献

M-mode echocardiograms were recorded from 40 healthy dogs, awake and unsedated, in left lateral recumbent position. Fifteen echocardiographic measurements were taken and correlated with body weights using linear regression equations. The left ventricular internal dimension in systole and diastole, the left ventricular wall thickness, the aortic root dimension, and the left atrial dimension had high correlation coefficients (r2), ranging from 0.756 to 0.619. The fractional shortening of the left ventricle in systole (39% +/- 6%) and the left atrial to aortic root ratio (0.99 +/- 0.10) were not linearly related to body weights and had constant values.  相似文献

M-mode echocardiograms were recorded from 21 adult sheep (20 ewes, 1 whether). Fifteen echocardiographic measurements were taken and compared with body weights or heart rates, using linear regression equations. Significant correlations (P less than 0.05) were found when body weight was compared with left ventricular internal dimensions in systole (Yo = 0.187 Xo + 18.60, P less than 0.05) and diastole (Yo = 0.346 Xo + 26.69, P less than 0.02), septal thickness in systole (Yo = 0.0876 Xo + 7.64, P less than 0.05) and diastole (Yo = 0.0673 Xo + 4.45, P less than 0.05), aortic root dimension (Yo = 0.129 Xo + 23.40, P less than 0.05), and left atrial dimension (Yo = 0.194 Xo + 15.95, P less than 0.005). Heart rate was significantly correlated (P less than 0.05) with body weight (Yo = -0.245 X 96.71, P less than 0.05), ejection time (Yo = -0.0013 Xo + 0.376, P less than 0.001), velocity of circumferential fiber shortening (Yo = 0.0061 Xo + 0.928, P less than 0.05), mean velocity of mitral valve middiastolic closure (Yo = -0.184 Xo + 1.65, P less than 0.02), and left atrial dimension (Yo = -0.109 + 40.55, P less than 0.005). Fractional shortening of the left ventricle was (mean) 37.2 +/- 5.7% and the left atrial to aortic root ratio was (mean) 0.92 +/- 0.10.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to characterise the development of cardiac dilatation induced by chronic volume overload in 12 dogs. Bilateral arteriovenous fistulas were created between the common femoral arteries and the femoral veins, and the animals were serially studied with transthoracic echocardiography for a period of 12 weeks after the operation. Compared to the measurements obtained before the operation (week 0), the data obtained at the end of the experimental period showed significantly increased left ventricular volume measured by 2D-echocardiography (from 25.1 cm3 to 43.8 cm3, p < 0.0001 in diastole and from 8.6 cm3 to 16.8 cm3, p < 0.001 in systole), and left ventricular diameter measured by M-mode echocardiography (from 26.2 mm to 32.6 mm, p < 0.0001 in diastole and from 17.1 mm to 20.6 mm, p < 0.001 in systole). The size of the left atrium also increased in transversal (from 29.2 mm to 33.6 mm, p < 0.01) but not in longitudinal diameter. In spite of a significant cardiac chamber dilatation over the 12-week period, left ventricular systolic functional variables (fractional shortening, FS % and ejection fraction, EF %), and also the left ventricular systolic and diastolic free wall thickness remained unchanged. In this study we demonstrated that chronic progressive volume overload resulted in gradual dilatation of the canine heart, and that the pathological process can be monitored successfully by serial echocardiography. We found that left atrial dilatation occurred without the development of mitral regurgitation and/or detectable left ventricular dysfunction.  相似文献

Left ventricular hypertrophy signals a poor prognosis in hypertensive humans. Cardiac disease is common in cats with systemic hypertension. The aims of this study were to characterize the echocardiographic findings of cats with systemic hypertension and to determine if reducing the degree of hypertension is associated with resolution of cardiac hypertrophy. Echocardiographic examinations were performed on 19 cats with naturally occurring systemic hypertension. Fourteen of these cats were subsequently studied after a minimum of 3 months of treatment with the antihypertensive agent amlodipine. Hypertensive cats had a significantly thicker interventricular septum in both systole and diastole, thicker left ventricular free wall in both systole and diastole, and larger left atrium compared to the published normal values and 74% (14/19) of the cats met criteria for left ventricular hypertrophy (diastolic septal or free-wall thickness > 0.60 cm). Systolic blood pressure was lower after treatment (217 +/- 25 mm Hg, range: 180-275 mm Hg; and 142 +/- 27 mm Hg, range: 90-200 mm Hg). No difference was found in any of the echocardiographic measurements between the untreated and treated cats, although more cats had ventricular hypertrophy before treatment (11/14) than after initiating amlodipine (6/14; P = .006). Ventricular hypertrophy is common in hypertensive cats and may resolve after the initiation of amlodipine.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the effects of positioning and number of repeated measurements on intra- and interobserver variability of echocardiographic measurements in dogs. DESIGN: Prospective study. ANIMALS: 4 healthy dogs. PROCEDURE: Each observer performed 24 examinations, separately assessing each dog 6 nonconsecutive times (3 times with the dog in lateral recumbency and 3 with the dog in a standing position). Variables evaluated included M-mode measurements of left ventricular end-diastolic and left ventricular end-systolic diameters, left ventricular free-wall thickness in diastole and systole, interventricular septal thickness in diastole and systole, left ventricular shortening fraction, and 2-dimensional measurements of the left atrial diameter-to-aortic diameter ratio. RESULTS: All coefficients of variation (range, 3.4% to 26.6%) were similar between operators and positions and were < 15% for 27 of 32 values. For both operators, repeatability of the measurements was better for left ventricular end-systolic diameter, left ventricular free-wall thickness in diastole, left ventricular free-wall thickness in systole, and the left atrial diameter-to-aortic diameter in the standing position, and similar for both positions for shortening fraction and left ventricular end-diastolic diameter. No effect of cardiac cycle was observed. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Within-day variability of conventional echocardiography performed with the dog in the standing position was at least as good as that obtained with the dog in lateral recumbency for most measured variables. Single measurements of each variable may be sufficient for trained observers examining dogs that do not have an arrhythmia. The standing position should be used, particularly for stressed or dyspneic dogs.  相似文献

IntroductionCanine dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM) can result from numerous etiologies including genetic mutations, infections, toxins, and nutritional imbalances. This study sought to characterize differences in echocardiographic findings between dogs with DCM fed grain-free (GF) diets and grain-based (GB) diets.AnimalsForty-eight dogs with DCM and known diet history.MethodsThis was a retrospective analysis of dogs with DCM from January 1, 2015 to May 1, 2018 with a known diet history. Dogs were grouped by diet (GF and GB), and the GF group was further divided into dogs eating the most common grain-free diet (GF-1) and other grain-free diets (GF-o). Demographics, diet history, echocardiographic parameters, taurine concentrations, and vertebral heart scale were compared between GB, all GF, GF-1, and GF-o groups at diagnosis and recheck.ResultsDogs eating GF-1 weighed less than GB and GF-o dogs, but age and sex were not different between groups. Left ventricular size in diastole and systole was greater, and sphericity index was less for GF-1 compared with GB dogs. Diastolic left ventricular size was greater for all GF compared with that of GB dogs. Fractional shortening, left atrial size, and vertebral heart scale were not different between groups. Taurine deficiency was not identified in GF dogs, and presence of congestive heart failure was not different between groups. Seven dogs that were reevaluated after diet change (6 received taurine supplementation) had clinical and echocardiographic improvement.ConclusionsDietary-associated DCM occurs with some GF diets and can improve with nutritional management, including diet change. The role of taurine supplementation, even without deficiency, is uncertain.  相似文献

ObjectivesTo study the effect of pregnancy and lactation on echocardiographic parameters in Holstein dairy cows.AnimalsNine multiparous high milk producing (HMP) dairy cows (producing more than 40 kg of milk per day in peak production) and 9 low milk producing (LMP) cows (producing less than 30 kg or milk per day in peak production).MethodsEchocardiography was performed twice; one month before calving and two months after calving.ResultsThe heart rate of HMP cows in the early lactation period was significantly higher than in the dry period. In LMP cows, there was a significant increase in left ventricular dimension in the early lactation period as compared to the dry period, and the interventricular septum in systole (IVSs) in the dry period was significantly thicker than early lactation period. In HMP cows, there was an increase in the right ventricular diameter in systole in the early lactation period as compared to the dry period. Left ventricular and aortic dimensions in the dry period of HMP were significantly higher than those of LMP cows. When the data were corrected for body weight, comparison of values of the dry period of HMP and LMP cows showed that left ventricular volume in systole in HMP was significantly higher and that IVSs, left ventricular fractional shortening and ejection fraction were significantly lower than in LMP cows.ConclusionsThis study demonstrated that lactation influences the intracardiac dimensions. The amount of milk production can influence echocardiographic parameters in dairy cows.  相似文献

ObjectiveTo compare two echocardiographic methods of measuring aortic diameter in short-axis projections.MethodsRight-parasternal short-axis 2-dimensional projections of the left atrium and aorta were obtained from dogs and cats undergoing routine cardiac evaluation. Two investigators measured the aortic valve linear dimension using 2 methods: along the commissure between the non-coronary and right-coronary cusps and along the commissure between the non-coronary and left-coronary cusps. Inter-observer and intra-observer variability and agreement were assessed by comparing blinded measurements with each method by 4 trained observers on a standardized set of images. Measurements were compared for agreement using the limits of agreement analysis. Variability between observers was compared by examining residuals and intraclass correlation.Results274 canine and 100 feline aortic valve images were measured in the first part of the study. One observer demonstrated slight proportional bias, while the other observer showed more variability (less agreement). When results were pooled for both investigators, no bias was identified, and 95% limits of agreement were ±10% of the mean measurement for both species. In the second part of the study, 106 images were measured. Intraobserver variability was <4% for all observers. Inter-observer agreement was very high. Individual bias was identified in some observers, but was considered clinically inconsequential. Normalized differences between the 2 methods of measurement were below ±15% of the measured value for all observers.ConclusionsOur results show sufficient agreement between two common methods used to measure aortic linear dimensions to suggest that these methods are interchangeable.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the use of measuring plasma concentrations of atrial natriuretic peptide (ANP), B-type natriuretic peptide (BNP), and cardiac troponin-I (cTnI) to detect dogs with occult dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM). ANIMALS: 118 client-owned dogs. PROCEDURES: Dogs were prospectively examined by use of ECG; echocardiography; and evaluation of concentrations of ANP, BNP, and cTnI. Occult DCM was diagnosed by evaluation of echocardiographic left ventricular dimensions and detection of ventricular arrhythmias on ECG. Sensitivity and specificity of assays for measurement of plasma concentrations of ANP, BNP, and cTnI to detect dogs with occult DCM were determined. RESULTS: Occult DCM was diagnosed in 21 dogs. A concentration of > 6.21 pg/mL for BNP had a sensitivity of 95.2% and specificity of 61.9% for identifying dogs with occult DCM. In contrast, concentrations of ANP and cTnI had relatively low predictive values. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Blood-based screening for occult DCM in dogs can be accomplished by use of a BNP assay. Additional studies should be performed to optimize this method of screening dogs to detect occult DCM.  相似文献

IntroductionDilated cardiomyopathy (DCM) in dogs has been associated with feeding of grain-free (GF), legume-rich diets. Some dogs with presumed diet-associated DCM have shown improved myocardial function and clinical outcomes following a change in diet and standard medical therapy.HypothesisPrior GF (pGF) diet influences reverse cardiac remodeling and clinical outcomes in dogs with DCM and congestive heart failure (CHF).Animals and methodsA retrospective study was performed with 67 dogs with DCM and CHF for which diet history was known. Dogs were grouped by diet into pGF and grain-inclusive (GI) groups. Dogs in the pGF group were included if diet change was a component of therapy. Survival was analyzed using Kaplan–Meier curves and the Cox proportional-hazards model.ResultsThe median survival time was 344 days for pGF dogs vs. 253 days for GI dogs (P = 0.074). Statistically significant differences in median survival were identified when the analysis was limited to dogs surviving longer than one week (P = 0.033). Prior GF dogs had a significantly worse outcome the longer a GF diet was fed prior to diagnosis (P = 0.004) or if they were diagnosed at a younger age (P = 0.017). Prior GF dogs showed significantly greater improvement in normalized left ventricular internal diastolic diameter (P = 0.038) and E-point septal separation (P = 0.031) measurements and significant decreases in their furosemide (P = 0.009) and pimobendan (P < 0.005) dosages over time compared to GI dogs.ConclusionsPrior GF dogs that survived at least one week after diagnosis of DCM, treatment of CHF, and diet change had better clinical outcomes and showed reverse ventricular remodeling compared to GI dogs.  相似文献
