The effect of NH4 + ‐N on root reduction capacity developed during Fe stress was investigated in plants grown in a CaCO3 buffered nutrient solution. After a 3‐day period of Fe stress, reduction capacity was not increased by the presence of NH4 + ‐N in the growth medium or in the extracting solution. Since reductant degradation over time was pH dependent, experiments measuring root reductant release into nutrient solution would be confounded by treatments with different solution pH values. In an unbuffered nutrient solution a differential NH4 + uptake due to the cultivar would affect solution pH and interfere with a reliable interpretation of reductant measurements.  相似文献

The popular foliage houseplant, Tolmiea Menziesii (piggyback plant), grown in an all NO3‐N, half‐strength Hoagland Solution No. 1 without Fe or with 0.5 g/liter Fe2O3 became severely Fe chlorotic and caused the nutrient solution pH to rise from 5.1 initially to above 7. Plants supplied 90 μM Fe‐EDTA also raised solution pH but did not become chlorotic. When Fe chlorotic plants were transferred to a solution with 0.5 gAiter Fe2O3, modified to contain 25 to 100% of the N as NH4, the solution pH dropped to between 4.3 and 3.1, and the chlorotic plants regreened. However, if the pH of the modified solution was buffered above 7 with 1 g/liter CaCO3, no regreening occurred. Solution pH also dropped if the solution lacked N, and there was a temporary regreening of Fe chlorotic plants before N deficiency chlorosis appeared. These solution culture results indicate that Tolmiea should be classified as an Fe inefficient plant.  相似文献

Abstract

Genotypic evaluation is critical to development of soybean [Glycine max (L.) Merr.] cultivars with genetic resistance to Fe‐deficiency chlorosis. Root Fe3+ reducing activity is correlated with genotypic resistance to Fe chlorosis measured in field nurseries, and thus may be a reliable method for identifying chlorosis‐resistat genotypes. However, to develop methods useful for large‐scale screening, several modifications of the previously published procedure for measuring root Fe3+ reducing activity were investigated. Several hydroponic experiments were conducted to test proposed modifications. It was determined that: (a) different genotypes may be grown together in the same nutrient solution without affecting Fe3+ reduction, (b) genotype separation is maximized by growth in CaCO3 buffered solution (37.5 mg L?1), (c) a labor‐intensive elongation step can be eliminated, and (d) denotype evaluation can be accomplished without introducing Fe into the hydroponic solutions. These refinements to the procedure should allow its adaptation and use in soybean breeding programs.  相似文献

Some plants respond to Fe‐deficiency stress by inducing Fe‐solubilizing reactions at or near the root surface. In their ability to solubilize Fe, dicotyledonous plants are more effective than monocotyledonous plants. In this study we determined how representative plants differ in their response when subjected to Fe‐deficiency stress in a calcareous soil and in nutrient solutions. Iron‐inefficient genotypes of tomato, soybean, oats, and corn all developed Fe chlorosis when grown in soil, whereas Fe‐efficient genotypes of these same species remained green. The same genotypes were grown in complete nutrient solutions and then transferred to nutrient solutions containing N (as NO3 ) and no Fe.

The T3238 FER tomato (Lycopersican esculentum Mill.) Fe‐efficient) was the only genotype that released significant amounts of H from the roots (the pH was lowered to 3.9) and concomitantly released reductants. Under similar conditions, Hawkeye soyhean [Glycine max (L.) Merr.] released reductants but the solution pH was not lowered. Both Fe‐inefficient and Fe‐efficient genotypes of oats (Avena sativa L.) and corn (Zea mays L.) released insufficient H or reductant from their roots to solubilize Fe; as a result, each of these genotypes developed Fe‐deficiency (chlorosis).

The marked differences observed among these genotypes illustrate the genetic variability inherent within many plant species. A given species or genotype may accordingly not be adapted to a particular soil. Conversely, a given species or genotype may be found (or developed) that is precisely suited for a particular soil. In this event, the need for soil amendments may be reduced or eliminated.  相似文献

Abstract

Iron from a mixture of Fe oxide and metallic Fe was more available to corn (Zea mays L.) than it was to soybeans when the plants wore grown in calcareous soil or in nutrient solution. All this Fe, however, was DTPA (diethylene triamine pentaacetic acid) extractable. In solution culture the Fe was available to the soybean (Glycine max L.) plants unless CaCO3 was included in the nutrient solution.  相似文献

Abstract

Pellitory of the wall (Parietaria diffusa L.), a dicotyledonous wild plant belonging to the family of Urticaceae, is widespread on calcareous soils, and also on walls and debris, were lime concentration, sometimes, is extremely high; it may then be considered a calcicole plant. Since high pH values and the presence of CaCO3 and HCO3 ? cause low Fe solubility, its availability in such substrates could be the ecological factor limiting the distribution of spontaneous plants in calcareous soils, and a calcareous soil‐born plant should be characterized by a higher Fe‐efficiency in comparison with calcifuge ones. Parietaria diffusa was grown in nutrient solutions in the presence and in the absence of Fe, and in the presence of CaCO3 and bicarbonate at two concentrations (5 and 15 mM), in order to simulate a natural substrate with different lime contents. Some biochemical parameters were determined and the morphological and hystological modifications of the root system were evaluated in order to verify whether Parietaria is a Fe‐efficient plant and adopts the adaptive mechanisms of Strategy I Fe‐efficient plants.  相似文献

Zinc (Zn) deficiency is more common in corn (Zea mays L.) than in sorghum [Sorghum bicolor (L.) Moench] or wheat (Triticum sp.). The ability of wheat to withstand low soil Zn conditions is related to increased release of phytosiderophore from its roots. The reasons for sorghum's ability and corn's inability to utilize low levels of soil Zn have not been explored adequately. The objectives of this research were to 1) ascertain if Zn deficiency could be induced in sorghum, wheat, and corn grown in a chelator‐buffered nutrient solution and 2) determine relative releases of phytosiderophore from roots of sorghum, wheat, and/or corn under Zn‐deficiency conditions. Sorghum, wheat, and corn were grown hydroponically in the greenhouse with a chelator‐buffered nutrient solution designed to induce Zn deficiency, while supplying adequate amounts of other nutrients. Root exudates were collected over time to measure phytosiderophore release. Shoot Zn concentrations and shoot and root dry matter yields were determined also. The technique was effective for inducing Zn deficiency in sorghum, wheat, and corn, as evidenced by reduced shoot and root dry matter yields, shortened internodes, reduced shoot Zn concentrations, and plant Zn concentrations below the suggested critical values for these species. Sorghum and wheat plants increased the release of phytosiderophore in response to Zn deficiency, but com did not. The total amount of phytosiderophore released by the roots was in the order wheat>sorghum>corn. The absence of a “phytosiderophore”; response to Zn deficiency of corn, coupled with the evidence that this species requires, or at least accumulates, more Zn than wheat or sorghum, provides an explanation as to why Zn deficiencies are more prevalent for corn than wheat or sorghum under field conditions.  相似文献

Iron deficiency in dicots is accompanied by an increased potential for Fe uptake and translocation. The mechanisms responsible for these changes in metabolism (Fe‐stress response) provide for the adaptation of Fe‐efficient genotypes to conditions which limit the availability of Fe. Previous studies indicated that when Fe‐stress response is initiated, the uptake of Mn, as well as Fe, is enhanced in Fe efficient species such as sunflower. The present study was conducted to determine the relationship between Fe‐stress response and Mn uptake in snapbean (Phaseolus vulgaris L., cvs. Bush Blue Lake 290, Bush Blue Lake 274). The plants were grown in complete nutrient solutions containing 0.02 to 0.52 mg L‐1 Mn, at acid or alkaline pH. Iron stress was induced with 0.22 mg l‐1 Fe(EDDHA) (molar ratio 1:1 or 1:2), high P (14.3 mg L‐1) and excess CaCO3. Bush Blue Lake 290 ('BBL 290') was more sensitive than Bush Blue Lake 274 ('BBL 274') to Mn toxicity in acid (pH 5.2) nutrient solutions with adequate Fe. Under alkaline conditions, Mn accumulation by ‘BBL 290’ snapbean was increased dramatically with Fe stress, while a moderate Increase was found for ‘BBL 274’. Foliar symptoms of Mn toxicity, observed on Fe stressed ‘BBL 290’, increased in severity at higher Mn (0.06 to 0.26 mg L‐1 ) concentrations. It was concluded that the magnitude of the enhanced Mn uptake was related to the intensity of Fe stress response as well as the cultivar sensitivity to Mn.  相似文献

Seedling sorghum [Sorghum bicolor (L.) Moench. cv GP‐10, SC283, SC574, and Funk G522DR] primary root tips (1‐cm) content of calcium (Ca), phosphorus (P), zinc (Zn), boron (B), manganese (Mn), iron (Fe), magnesium (Mg), and copper (Cu) in response to a Ca2+‐channel blocker (nifedipine 0, 0.01, 0.1, or 1 μM) was measured after a 1‐hr exposure to Hoagland and Arnon complete mineral nutrient solution. Content of ions was significantly different among the cultivars. Responses to nifedipine were element‐cultivar‐blocker concentration dependent.  相似文献

Iron‐efficient T3238FER tomatoes (Lycopersicon esculentum Mill.) did not respond to Fe‐deficiency stress by releasing hydrogen ions and reductants from their roots when the plants were grown in a K‐deficient nutrient solution with or without sodium. When increments of K were added to the nutrient solution, the plants responded proportionally to Fe‐deficiency stress, Fe was transported to plant tops and the chlorophyll concentration in plant tops increased. As the leaf Fe concentration was increasing, root K concentration was increasing and root Mn concentration was decreasing. The K and Mn in tops did not show the marked differences observed in roots.

In the presence of adequate K, renewing the solutions each time the pH was lowered to near 4 (days 7 and 11) caused an increased concentration of most elements in the plant, especially Mn in both tops and roots. These plants had the same Fe concentration as plants grown in unchanged solutions but they contained much less chlorophyll. Balance of nutrient elements to some degree seems required in order for iron to be made available to function properly in the plant.  相似文献

A greenhouse experiment was carried out during the spring–summer 2009 to test the hypotheses that: (1) arbuscular‐mycorrhizal (AM) inoculation with a biofertilizer containing Glomus intraradices gives an advantage to overcome alkalinity problems, (2) mineral fertilization is more detrimental to AM development than organic fertilization on an equivalent nutrient basis. Arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) and non‐AM of zucchini (Cucurbita pepo L.) plants were grown in sand culture with two pH levels in the nutrient solution (6.0 or 8.1) and two fertilization regimes (organic or mineral). The high‐pH nutrient solution had the same basic composition as the low‐pH solution, plus an additional 10 mM NaHCO3 and 0.5 g L–1 CaCO3. Increasing the concentration of NaHCO3 from 0 to 10 mM in the nutrient solution significantly decreased yield, plant growth, SPAD index, net assimilation of CO2 (ACO2), N, P, Ca, Mg, Fe, Mn, and Zn concentration in leaf tissue. The +AM plants under alkaline conditions had higher total, marketable yield and total biomass compared to –AM plants. The higher yield and biomass production in +AM plants seems to be related to the capacity of maintaining higher SPAD index, net ACO2, and to a better nutritional status (high P, K, Fe, Mn, and Zn and low Na accumulation) in response to bicarbonate stress with respect to –AM plants. The percentage root colonization was significantly higher in organic‐fertilized (35.7%) than in mineral‐fertilized plants (11.7%). Even though the AM root colonization was higher in organic‐fertilized plants, the highest yield and biomass production were observed in mineral‐fertilized plants due to the better nutritional status (higher N, P, Ca, and Mg), higher leaf area, SPAD index, and ACO2.  相似文献

It has been proposed that glutathione can relieve the effects of Fe deficiency. This study tested the effects of glutathione foliar treatments to prevent Fe chlorosis, using as positive controls soil and foliar Fe fertilisation. Medicago scutellata plants were grown in soil (5.7% CaCO3) supplemented or not with 4 and 8% CaCO3. Two Fe(III)‐EDDHA soil treatments (5 and 10 mg Fe kg?1), and three foliar treatments (three applications each of 2.14 mM Fe(III)‐EDDHA, 1 mM glutathione, and the previous two combined) were applied. Measurements include leaf chlorophyll and Fe concentrations, biomass, leaf enzymatic and non‐enzymatic antioxidant systems and carboxylates. The addition of CaCO3 caused typical Fe deficiency symptoms, including changes in chlorophyll, Fe, antioxidant systems and carboxylates, which were prevented by soil and foliar Fe fertilisation. The foliar treatment with glutathione also led to higher chlorophyll, leaf extractable Fe and root Fe, as well as decreases in some antioxidant systems, whereas leaf Fe concentrations decreased. The combined foliar application of glutathione and Fe was even more efficient in preventing chlorosis. Including glutathione in foliar fertilisation programs should be considered as an option for Fe chlorosis prevention, especially when relatively large leaf total Fe concentrations occur in the so called chlorosis paradox.  相似文献

Cool white fluorescent (CWF) light reduces Fe3+ to Fe2+ while low pressure sodium (LPS) light does not. Cotton plants grown under CWF light are green, while those yrown under LPS light develop a chlorosis very similar to the chlorosis that develops when the plants are deficient in iron (Fe). It could be that CWF light (which has ultra violet) makes iron more available for plant use by maintaining more Fe2+ in the plant. Two of the factors commonly induced by Fe‐stress in dicotyledonous plants‐‐hydroyen ions and reductants released by the roots‐‐were measured as indicators of the Fe‐deficiency stress response mechanism in M8 cotton.

The plants were grown under LPS and CWF light in nutrient solutions containing either NO3‐N or NH4‐N as the source of nitrogen, and also in a fertilized alkaline soil. Leaf chlorophyll concentration varied significantly in plants grown under the two light sources as follows: CWF+Fe > LPS+Fe > CWF‐Fe ≥ LPS‐Fe. The leaf nitrate and root Fe concentrations were significantly greater and leaf Fe was generally lower in plants grown under LPS than CWF light. Hydrogen ions were extruded by Fe‐deficiency stressed roots grown under either LPS or CWF light, but “reductants”; were extruded only by the plants grown under CWF light. In tests demonstrating the ability of light to reduce Fe3+ to Fe2+ in solutions, enough ultra violet penetrated the chlorotic leaf of LPS yrown plants to reduce some Fe3+ in a beaker below, but no reduction was evident through a yreen CWF grown leaf.

The chlorosis that developed in these cotton plants appeared to be induced by a response to the source of liyht and not by the fertilizer added. It seems possible that ultra violet liyht could affect the reduction of Fe3+ to Fe2+ in leaves and thus control the availability of this iron to biological systems requiring iron in the plant.  相似文献

Aluminum (Al) toxicity to plants in complete nutrient solutions is difficult to relate to Al activity in solution because of precipitation and complexation. Aluminum toxicity was studied for two seedling crops, sorghum (Sorghum bicolor L. Moench) and wheat (Triticum aestivum L. em Thell), at low levels (≤10 μM) in two incomplete nutrient solutions to study plant response to Al alone, Al+PO4 3‐, Al+OH, and Al+PO4 3‐+OH. Relative root length was the bioassay for Al toxicity. ‘Monomeric’ Al was measured using Aluminon and both root length and measured Al were compared to the theoretical Al in solution predicted by the MINTEQA2 equilibrium model.

Low levels of Al were toxic to plant roots with sorghum showing a decrease in relative root length from 1 to 10 μM Al, and wheat showing a decrease from 4 to 10 μM. A mono‐salt background solution (400 μM CaCl2) and a more complex base solution (CaCl2, KNO3, and MgCl2) gave similar root lengths and measured Al values. Phosphate and hydroxyl ameliorated Al toxicity and lowered measured Al in solution, but not to the extent predicted by the model. Adding phosphate (PO4 3‐) or hydroxyl (OH) raised the pH, but again not as high as the model predicted. The difference in toxicity and measured Al were most likely the result of polymers (Al+3) which are toxic, but not measured by the procedure used, or included in the model which showed the Al as being removed from solution by precipitation.  相似文献

The jute (Corchorus capsularis L.) cv. 3RC‐212 which is Fe‐efficient, was subjected to Fe‐deficiency stress, and the nutrient medium was examined for chemicals, when the plants became chlorotic and the pH was lowered to about 4. While phenolic acids could not be detected, DBP (dibutyl phthalate) was identified in the extract by means of TLC and HPLC. The effect of DBP and caffeic acid was studied in JRC‐212 and DBP was found to cause recovery of the plants from chlorosis in 5 days. The chemicals, PA (phthalic acid), a derivative of DBP (50 mg/1) were supplied to chlorotic plants of JRO‐632, an Fe‐inefficient jute cultivar, and both the chemicals were effective in chlorosis recovery. PA application caused more rapid greening than DBP.

Jute is the second crop species in which DBP is identified in the root exudate. The detection of DBP was first recorded in sorghum CSH‐7.  相似文献

Chickpea plants (Cicer arietinum L cv. ILC 195) were grown for 24 days in water culture under two regimes of nitrogen nutrition (NO3 or NH4‐N) with or without Fe. For plants fed with NO3‐N, Fe stress severely depressed fresh weight accumulation and chlorotic symptoms of Fe‐deficiency developed rapidly. Little difference in growth occurred in the NH4‐fed plants, whether or not Fe was withheld, with no visual evidence of Fe‐deficiency indicating a beneficial effect of NH4 in depressing the symptoms of Fe chlorosis. Typical pH changes were measured in the nutrient solution of the control plants in relation to nitrogen supply, increasing with NO3 and decreasing with NH4‐nutrition. With both forms of nitrogen, plants acidified the nutrient solution in response to Fe‐stress. Under NH4‐nutrition, acidification was enhanced by withholding Fe. In the NO3‐fed plants the uptake of all nutrients was reduced by the stress but proportionally NO3‐ and K+ were most affected. Total anion uptake was depressed more than that of cation uptake. For the NH4‐fed plants withholding Fe resulted in an increased uptake of all ions except NH4 + which was depressed. Regardless of the form of N‐supply, when Fe was withheld from the nutrient solution the net H+ efflux calculated from the (C‐A) uptake values was closely balanced by the OH” added to the nutrient solution to compensate for the pH changes. Evidence of accumulation of organic acids in the Fe‐stressed plants was found, especially in the NO3‐fed plants, indicating a role for these internally produced anion charges in balancing cation charge in relation to the depression of NO3 uptake associated with Fe‐stress.  相似文献

The objective of this study was to establish whether the iron‐stress responses observed in T203 soybean (Fe‐inefficient) with active nodules are products of the nodules or of the entire root system. A split‐root system was used in which half the roots of each plant were inoculated and actively fixing nitrogen and the other half were not. Soybean cultivar T203 is normally Fe‐inefficient and does not exhibit the Fe‐stress responses, however an iron‐stress response did occur during active N2 fixation in earlier studies. This implies that the active nodules influenced the plant's ability to respond to Fe‐deficiency stress. In this study, the Fe‐stress response (H+ and reductant release) observed in T203 soybean was limited to the inoculated side of the split‐root system. The severe Fe chlorosis which developed in these plants was overcome in a manner similar to Fe‐efficient cultivars undergoing normal Fe‐stress response and the T203 plants completely regreened. Exudation of H+ ions was similar in both the presence and absence of Fe, and was generally limited to inoculated roots. Reductant release was nearly nonexistent from the non‐inoculated roots and was greater for the Fe‐stressed (‐Fe) plants than for non‐stressed (+Fe) plants. Thus, the response observed, which alleviated Fe chlorosis, appeared to be associated with N2 fixation of the active nodules.  相似文献

Interferences were detected in the PDTS method for the measurement of Fe‐reducing compounds exuded by plant roots into Hoagland nutrient solution. These were caused by a) excess NH3 which is present in the ammonium acetate buffer used in the assay, which forms precipitates with the KH2PO4 especially when nutrient solution aliquots of larger than 2 mL are to be tested, and b) the overriding effect of autoreduction of Fe due to the very high concentration of FeCl3 present in the assay medium. A modified method is presented whereby up to 20 mL of rooting solution can be tested and the interference due to autoreduction eliminated. Comparative measurements by the proposed and the original method show that the original method overestimates the amount of Fe‐reducing root exudates by Fe‐deficient plants by more than tenfold.  相似文献

Abstract

The major purpose of these experiments was to determine if Pb uptake by plants was significantly increased by chelating agents used in plant nutrition. The interaction of Pb with some other elements in barley plants (Hordeum vulgare L. C.V. Atlas 57) and bush bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L. C.V. Improved Tendergreen) was studied in a glasshouse with different rates of Pb in solution culture and in amended (control, S, CaCO3, MgCO3) Yolo loam soil with and without the chelating agent DTPA (diethylene triamine pentaacetic acid). In a solution culture experiment, 10‐3 M Pb significantly decreased bush bean yields in both control and DTPA treatments. The CaCO3 added to nutrient solution decreased the concentration of Pb in leaves, stems, and roots and prevented the toxicity of 10‐3 M Pb++. At high Pb levels, interactions between Pb and Mn and Pb and Fe were observed, except with CaCO3. In the soil experiment, the yields of barley and bush bean were influenced only slightly by Pb. The Pb concentration in barley shoots and bush bean leaves and stems was increased considerably in the presence of DTPA, however. In the absence of DTPA, the effect of added Pb was very small in the control and S amended soil treatments and almost negligible in the CaCO3 and MgCO3 amended soil treatments. Application of DTPA facilitated the translocation of Pb, Fe, Mn, Cu, and Zn to shoots. The effect was dependent upon soil pH. Particularly, the Fe was increased by DTPA at low pH while the effect was negligible at high pH. This was opposite the effect on Pb. The DTPA resulted in considerable Pb transport to leaves and stems at high soil pH. The uptake pattern of Zn and Cu was similar to that of Pb. It can be expected that chelating agents can increase the migration of Pb to plants andincrease its uptake by plants, and hence, entry into food chains.  相似文献

Zinc‐inefficient Sanilac and Zn‐efficient Saginaw navy bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) differ in their susceptibility to Zn‐deficiency stress. Sanilac accumulates Fe under Zn‐deficiency stress and Saginaw does not. These two navy bean cultivars were grown at 0, 0.006 and 0.12 mg/L Zn in modified Hoagland nutrient solution. Various Fe‐stress response mechanisms were quantified periodically over a 12‐day experimental period to determine if known factors in the Fe‐stress response mechanism were enhanced by Zn‐deficiency stress. Visual Zn‐deficiency symptoms were more severe in Sanilac than Saginaw navy bean under equivalent Zn treatments. Sanilac contained lower leaf Zn than Saginaw when Zn was present in solution (0.006 and 0.12 mg/L Zn), but the two cultivars were similar in leaf Zn in the absence of Zn (0 mg/L Zn). Sanilac accumulated more leaf Fe than Saginaw when under Zn stress (0 and 0.006 mg/L Zn). The higher levels of leaf Fe in Sanilac than Saginaw were closely associated with enhanced release of reductants and increased reduction of Fe3+ to Fe2+ by roots of Sanilac. Saginaw navy bean roots reduced Fe3+ to Fe2+ similarly to Sanilac with adequate Zn present in solution (0.12 mg/L), but experienced minuscule levels of Fe3+ reduction under Zn deficiency. Zinc deficiency stimulated the initiation of the Fe‐stress response mechanism in Sanilac, but not Saginaw, which may have enhanced the development of Zn‐deficiency symptoms in Sanilac due to the increased uptake of Fe by this cultivar. The common Fe‐deficiency stress response associated primarily with grasses (release of phytosiderophore) was not found in either navy bean cultivar.  相似文献
