SUMMARY Endoscopic examinations of the upper respiratory tract were done on 92 of 314 Standardbred horses that raced one or more times at 4 consecutive, weekly race meetings. Although participation was voluntary, the characteristics of the population of horses examined were not statistically different from those of all horses that raced. No horse showed epistaxis, but 34 (32.4%) examinations of the trachea revealed blood that ranged from a trace in the tracheal mucus to large amounts scattered over the tracheal walls. Forty-four horses exhibited minor degrees of pharyngeal lymphoid hyperplasia, 2 had asynchronous movement of the left arytenoid cartilage and 15 had grains of sand in the respiratory tract. There was no association between bleeding and age, sex, distance of race, place in race or date of race. Mucus and mucopurulent material occurred less often after longer races and more often on the last 3 race nights.  相似文献

The héritabilitý of performance in thoroughbreds was studied using the Timeform Ratings for horses which raced during 1970. Timeform Ratings are based on the relative performance of all horses racing in a given year. 794 Individual three year old records, representing 96 sires which had five or more progeny, were used. The mean ratings for sires, dams and progeny were 128.5, 93.6 and 81.4 respectively; among the progeny the ratings for colts, fillies and geldings were 88.3, 79.1 and 77.1 respectively. Calculations made suggest that while stallion selection is effective in selecting sires with high performance ratings it does not appear that the selection of dams is very closely related to performance. There was no evidence of assortative mating.Paternal half sib and regression of offspring on sire analyses of the data yielded heritability estimates of 0.35 ± 0.11 and 0.74 ± 0.20 respectively. Further regression analyses on a reduced set of data (553 progeny records) of offspring on sire, offspring on dam and offspring on mid parent value gave heritabilities 0.56 ± 0.20, 0.36 ± 0.10 and 0.34 ± 0.08respectively. The possible reason for the substantially higher heritability estimates from the regressions of offspring on sire are discussed. It is concluded that the best measure of heritability of performance is 35%.  相似文献

The incidences of fractures and soft tissue injuries during 68397 starts of thoroughbred horses at New York Racing Association tracks were analyzed concerning track condition, dirt and turf tracks, environmental conditions, length of races, location of fractures on the track, and age of horses. It was concluded that the conditions evaluated are of no importance in the occurrence of racing injuries to thoroughbred horses.  相似文献

Genetic parameters of racing merit of thoroughbred horses in Poland   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
The study aimed at estimating variance components of racing ability traits in thoroughbred horses as a contribution to defining the breeding objective for this breed. Data collected were 12 143 placings at finish (square root) and 8641 earnings (log) won by 1414 horses running in 1693 races over the period of 1998–2001. Age of horses ranged from 2 to 5+ years, and the distances were from 1000 to 3200 m. Horses were from 11 state stables, from private breeders (one collective group), and from foreign breeding (another collective group within the factor ‘breeder’). Variance components were estimated by the residual maximal likelihood (REML) method. Statistical analysis accounted for fixed effects of year, age, race, breeder (optional), sex, weight carried and distance, and for the random effects of rider, permanent environment, and animal additive genetics. Pedigrees were at least three generations deep. When breeder effect was excluded from the model, heritability coefficients were 0.12 and 0.18, repeatability 0.23 and 0.34 for earnings and placings at finish, respectively.  相似文献

This study was undertaken to characterize and establish the kinematic standards of Italian standardbred trotter horses in real racing conditions. Certain parameters, such as the angles of both front and hind fetlock joints, stride length, stride frequency and average speed in youngs and adults are presented, examinated and compared with statistical tests. The angles and stride length were obtained using ONTRACK software over frames extracted from two CANON MV630i digital videocameras. For the stride frequency, a third identical videocamera filmed the horses to count the number of beats per minute. The average speed was calculated by multiplying the stride frequency by the stride length and transforming the result into kilometers per hour. The data reveal that as speed increases, younger horses have more extended fetlock joints than adults. Contrary to this, at the maximum speed (hereafter referred to as sprint speed) the adults increase both their stride frequency and stride length, while young horses increase stride frequency and decrease stride length. We think that the knowledge of these parameters in competition breeds could have potential relevance as they may reveal early indicators of the development of proper and adequate characteristics in young horses of those breeds.  相似文献

A retrospective study was carried out to identify factors which predisposed Thoroughbred horses to severe injuries, as compared to less severe injuries, while racing on New York Racing Association (NYRA) tracks during the period of January 1986 to June 1988. A severe injury was defined as an injury which led to humane destruction of the horse. A less severe injury was defined as a horse which didn't race within 6 months following a muscular, ligament, tendon, or skeletal injury on the racetrack. The data were obtained from the Horse Identification Department records kept by the Chief Examining Veterinarian of NYRA and included 55 severely injured horses and 245 less severely injured horses. Multiple logistic regression analysis was used to identify factors associated with the risk of severe injuries compared to less severe injuries in those horses. There was a significant association between track and the risk of severe injury (horses raced on Belmont and Saratoga were more likely to develop a severe injury compared to horses raced on Aqueduct Main). The track surface was also associated with the risk of severe injury (horses raced on a firm turf had a significantly lower risk of severe injury associated with the track was significantly modified by the track condition (horses raced at Belmont when it was muddy had a significantly increased risk compared to Aqueduct dirt). Horses were more likely to experience severe injury in the early part of the race (less than or equal to 6 furlongs) than the latter part of the race (greater than 6 furlongs). The risk of severe injury decreased with the age of the horse.  相似文献

Samples were taken from the right middle gluteal muscle of 25 Andalusian horses, 20 Thoroughbreds and 10 Arabian horses, all aged between 5-and 12-years-old and not involved in training. Histochemical analysis was carried out using myosin ATPase after acid preincubation (pH 4.4) and NADH-tr in order to determine the percentage of different fiber types. Statistical analysis showed highly significant differences (P<0.001) in the proportion of type 1 and type 2 fibers between breeds. The Thoroughbred was found to have a significantly higher proportion of type 2A fibers (P<0.001) than the other 2 breeds, although differences in the proportion of type 2B fibers in different breeds were not found to be statistically significant. The Andalusian horse was found to have a higher proportion of fast-twitch fibers of low oxidative capacity (type FT) than the other 2 breeds (P<0.001). These results not only confirm those obtained in previous studies of different breeds of horses, but highlight the histochemical differences in the skeletal muscle of breeds of great commercial and sporting interest in Spain.  相似文献

The distribution of specific gravity values for 2,599 urine samples collected from racing Thoroughbred horses that were known to have received furosemide prior to racing was compared with that for 1,669 urine samples from racing Thoroughbred horses that reportedly had not received furosemide. Values of specific gravity for furosemide-treated horses were significantly lower (P < 0.001) than those for horses that had not received furosemide, and the proportion of horses with urine specific gravity either <1.010 or <1.012 was significantly greater (P < 0.001) among the furosemide-treated horses. These data indicate that evaluation of urine specific gravity would be a useful component of drug testing programs for regulation of furosemide use.  相似文献

The prevalence of carpal fractures was determined for 211 thoroughbred and 75 standardbred racehorses. Statistically significant differences were found in the location of fractures between the 2 breeds. In the thoroughbred and standardbred groups, total fractures (460) were distributed nearly equally between the left (224) and right (236) carpi. The most common site of fracture in the thoroughbred group was the distal aspect of the radiocarpal bone (112), whereas the most common site of fracture in standardbred horses was the proximal surface of the third carpal bone (61). Slab fractures were more common in the right carpus of thoroughbred horses (29 right/11 left), but were distributed equally between the left (11) and right (11) carpi of the standardbred group. Fractures of the distal border of the radius and intermediate carpal bone were more common in the left carpi of the thoroughbred group and were relatively uncommon among standardbred horses. Fractures within the intercarpal joints (313) were more common than those within the radiocarpal joints (147) in thoroughbred and standardbred horses.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To document anatomic patterns of scintigraphic uptake and related orthopedic disease associated with racing activity in Standardbred horses. DESIGN: Retrospective study. ANIMALS: 64 Standardbred horses evaluated for lameness. PROCEDURE: Medical records at the time of discharge were reviewed, and information regarding signalment; history; results of lameness examination, scintigraphy, and radiography; diagnosis; and treatment were obtained. RESULTS: 274 areas of increased radiopharmaceutical uptake were identified. Scintigrams of 218 limbs (106 forelimbs, 112 hind limbs) were available for review. Seventy-three (33%) scintigrams had increased radiopharmaceutical uptake associated with the proximal sesamoids, 46 of 106 (43%) fore-limb scintigrams had increased uptake associated with the third carpal bone, and 33 of 112 (33%) hind limb scintigrams had radiopharmaceutical uptake associated with the small tarsal bones. Forty-three of 218 (20%) scintigrams had increased uptake associated with the distal aspect of the third metacarpal and metatarsal bones. Abnormal scintigraphic uptake was bilateral in 91 of 139 (65%) forelimb locations and 99 of 134 (74%) hind limb locations with increased radiopharmaceutical uptake. The primary scintigraphically identified classifications of disease were exercise-induced bone remodeling, synovitis or arthritis, and soft-tissue avulsion from bone (66, 17, and 6% of areas with increased radiopharmaceutical uptake, respectively). Of 274 areas with increased radiopharmaceutical uptake, 244 (89%) were believed to be clinically important. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Distinctive patterns of increased radiopharmaceutical uptake were identified that suggested Standardbred horses used for racing may have a predilection to develop orthopedic disease at specific sites that are distinct from those in Thoroughbreds used for racing and horses used for jumping activities.  相似文献

LINDHOLM, ARNE and BENGT SALTIN: The physiological and biochemical response of standardbred horses to exercise of varying speed and duration. Acta vet. scand. 1974, 15, 310–324. — Welltrained standardbred horses were studied to examine the metabolic response to excercise of various speeds and duration. Comparisons between interval (400, 700, 1,000 and 2,000 m) and continuous trotting (1 hr., 2 hrs.) and racing were made.Muscle and rectal temperatures were recorded before and immediately after each work bout. Heart rate was linearly related to trotting speed, and maximal heart rate (240 beats × min.−1) was achieved when trotting at least 700 m at close to maximal speed (12.0–12.5 m×sec.−1).Biopsy specimens from the gluteus medius muscle and venous blood were obtained before and after each work bout.Muscle and blood lactate values were markedly increased first at speeds close to maximal speed (11.4–12.5 m×sec.−1). Trotting 6×700 m at 12.5 m×sec.−1 produced as high muscle and blood lactate values as 23.7 and 19.0 mmol×kg−1 wet weight and l−1, respectively. Corresponding values after a race were about 15 mmol×kg−1 (muscle) and l−1 (blood).Glycogen utilization was related to work intensity and was most pronounced during the first work bouts. At a speed of 12 m×sec.−1 and trotting 2000 m, there was a glycogen utilization of near 12 mmol glucose units × kg−1 × min.−1 wet muscle. It is concluded that interval training over a distance of 700–1000 m repeated 4–6 times with a trotting speed close to maximal speed (11.4–12.5 m×sec.−1) appears to be optimal.ATP; CP; blood lactate; glycogen utilization; heart rate; horse skeletal muscle; muscle lactate; racing training.  相似文献

During training, a 6-year-old standardbred gelding collapsed, exhibiting severe epistaxis and agonal breathing and was euthanized. The horse had a recent history of poor performance, lethargy, and unilateral eyelid swelling with serous ocular discharge. Postmortem and histopathologic examination findings revealed thoracic lymphosarcoma and concurrent exercise-induced pulmonary hemorrhage.  相似文献

Of 61 horses with a history of exercise-induced pulmonary hemorrhage and treated with furosemide 4 hours prior to racing, 34 (55.7%) continued to bleed. Of 24 horses with exercise-induced pulmonary hemorrhage that were not treated with furosemide prior to racing, 17 (70.8%) still bled. There was no statistically significant difference between the treated and the nontreated groups. Of 45 horses given hesperidin-citrus bioflavinoids, 38 (84.4%) bled when exercised 90 days later. There was no statistically significant difference between the results for hesperidin-citrus bioflavinoid-treated horses and those for horses known to stop bleeding without any treatment.  相似文献
