Salinity is a major form of land degradation worldwide, with seasonal or temporary waterlogging often being an associated issue. Acacia ampliceps is a highly salt-tolerant small tree, naturally-occurring in north-western Australia, which produces abundant biomass with potential for fuelwood and fodder. We investigated the extent of variation amongst provenances and families of A. ampliceps for seedling response to salt and waterlogging. Seven-week old seedlings from 27 families (seven provenances, grouped into two regions), were treated in sand-filled pots in a glasshouse with either mixed salt (S) solutions (150 mol m−3 for 14 days, 300 mol m−3 for 33 days), waterlogging (W) or combined salt (S) and waterlogging (SW). Only 3% of seedlings died, mostly from the combined salt × waterlogging treatment. Seedlings from the Kimberley region had significantly greater height and shoot biomass than those from the Pilbara. Within these regions, Wave Hill (seedlot 14631) and Halls Creek (15738) provenances had the best growth. Height growth was reduced similarly for S- and W-treated plants, whereas that of SW-treated plants was reduced much more. Salt and waterlogging caused shoot dry weight reduction at harvest of 41 and 46%, respectively, with a slight interaction between salt and waterlogging; SW treated plants were most affected. Generally there were relatively small differences in the growth response of provenances and families to salt, but larger (often highly significant) variation in response to waterlogging. Genotypic variation for shoot and phyllode water content and phyllode number in response to salt and waterlogging was generally small. The good agreement found at the provenance level between seedling growth in this experiment and growth of young trees on saline land in a trial in Pakistan suggests that glasshouse screening may be a useful means for selecting potential provenances for field evaluation.  相似文献

In vitro cultured shoots of three Chinese poplar species (Populus tomentosa, P. alba cv. Pyramidalis andP. euphratica) and an improved poplar (FS-51), as a control, were exposed to the stress of low osmotic potential, salinity and high pH, and the shoot growth was measured.P. tomentosa andP. euphratica could grow even under the high osmotic stress (0.5m mannitol; −1.7 MPa).P. euphratica shoots which were previously cultured on the medium containing 0.7m mannitol (−2.4 MPa) recovered its growth after being transplanted to the medium without mannitol. The shoot growth ofP. euphratica was not so reduced even on the medium containing 100 mM NaCl. However, growth of the other poplars markedly reduced with 10 mM NaCl. Medium pH (pH 5.8–10) also did not affect the shoot growth ofP. euphratica. These poplars have different tolerance to the stresses in cultured shootin vitro. P. euphratica was extremely tolerant to the stresses which are possible to damage plants in dry land. A part of this study was presented at the 104th Annual Meeting of the Japanese Forestry Society. Different nutrient media can affect in vitro culturing protocols, and experimentation under varied growth conditions is valuable in plants where in vitro methods are in preliminary stages. We carried out the first in vitro propagation studies for the endangered species Caragana fruticosa (Fabaceae). We evaluated various nutrient media for their impact on shoot elongation and axillary bud proliferation using different concentrations of 6-benzylaminopurine (BA) and α-naphthaleneacetic acid (NAA). Shoot elongation was evaluated based on adventitious shoot primary culture and subculture regeneration from Caragana seedlings. Our goal was to improve both micropropagation and regeneration in C. fruticosa. MS nutrient media was superior to 1/2MS macronutrients, DKW, QL, and WPM for shoot elongation and axillary shoot proliferation. Shoots grown on 1/2MS and WPM exhibited some chlorosis, and shoots on QL produced larger leavers than plants growing on normal medium. The shoot proliferation coefficient on MS media supplemented with 2.22 μM BA and 0.44 μM BA + 2.69 μM NAA was significantly higher than that with other treatments in the primary culture. Shoots on 2.22 μM BA showed a higher proliferation coefficient (3.17) than others in the subculture. Shoots were rooted on 1/2MS medium with the addition of different concentrations of NAA. The optimal concentration for rooting was 0.27 μM NAA (74%). Roots exhibited many stout and long root hairs. Survivl of established plantlets was 82% at 30 days after transfer to soil. Plants established in the green house showed normal growth and displayed no apparent morphological differences compared to stock plants.  相似文献

Trees of the family Dipterocarpaceae are the dominant trees in Southeast Asian tropical forests where they play an important ecological role and are also important commercially. An experiment was conducted to determine the effect of ectomycorrhizal fungi on the growth of dipterocarp species in peat soils. Seedlings of Shorea pinanga were inoculated with spores of two ectomycorrhizal fungi, Pisolithus arhizus and Scleroderma sp. were grown in pots containing sterilized peat soil for 7 months. The percentage of ectomycorrhizal colonization on S. pinanga exceeded 86%. Colonization of S. pinanga roots by ectomycorrhizal fungi resulted in increased shoot height, stem diameter, number of leaves, and shoot fresh and dry weight. Survival rates of S. pinanga were greater for inoculated seedlings than control seedlings. These results suggest that inoculation of ectomycorrhizal fungi can improve the early growth of S. pinanga grown in tropical forests and that this technique will accelerate the rehabilitation of degraded dipterocarp forests.  相似文献

To determine the effect of shade on morphology, growth and biomass allocation in Picea sitchensis, Larix × eurolepis and Thuja plicata, seedlings were grown in the open or under shadehouses providing 25%, 50% and 75% reductions of full-light for two growing seasons. For most of the characteristics assessed there was no significant interaction between species and shade indicating that the morphological responses to changing shade treatments were not species-dependent. After two growing seasons the mean height increment for the three species was significantly greater in 25% (76.1 cm) and 50% shade (74.9 cm) than in the open (69.5 cm). Root collar diameter increment, shoot, root and total biomass declined significantly with increasing shade while the opposite was true for the height:diameter ratio. In both western red cedar and hybrid larch the shoot:root ratio was significantly greater in the shade while in Sitka spruce this characteristic was not influenced by shade. While all species had significantly greater specific shoot areas in 75% shade than in 0% shade, this trend was particularly pronounced in hybrid larch. In hybrid larch and western red cedar, the normalised specific projected shoot area increased significantly with increasing shade. The opposite trend was observed for Sitka spruce. We conclude that in the main the species studied demonstrated similar shade acclimation responses despite their reported differences in shade tolerance.  相似文献

A study was conducted to test the influence of different inorganic fertilizers (phosphorous and potassium) on the nodulation and growth of Dalbergia sissoo grown in the nursery. Before seeds sowing, different combinations of P, K fertilizers were incorporated with the nutrient-deficient natural forest soils, and then amended with cowdung (soil: cowdung = 3:1). Nodulation status (nodule number, shape, fresh weight, dry weight and color) in the roots and the plant growth parameters (length of shoot and root, collar diameter, fresh and dry weight of shoot and root) were recorded 60 days after seeds sowing. Nodulation status and growth of the plants varied significantly (P〈0.05) in the soils amended with fertilizers in comparison to the control. The highest nodule number (62), fresh (0.50 g) and dry (0.07 g) weights were recorded with the dose of PK at the rate of 160 kg/hm2. Nodule shape and color also varied widely in different treatments. In case of plant growth parameters, shoot and root length, collar diameter, fresh and dry weight of the plants took on a significant difference (P〈0.05) among various combination of fertilizers. From the study, it is revealed that PK at the rate of 160 kg/hm^2 fertilizer with soil and cowdung mixture (soil: eowdung = 3:1) is recommended for optimum growth and nodule formation of D. sissoo in degraded soils at a nursery level.  相似文献

The effect of two arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) fungi, Glomus fasciculatum and G. macrocarpum on shoot and root dry weights and nutrient content of Cassia siamea in a semi-arid wasteland soil was evaluated. Under nursery conditions, mycorrhizal inoculation improved growth of seedlings. Root and shoot dry weights were higher in mycorrhizal than non-mycorrhizal plants. The concentration of P, K, Cu, Zn and Na was significantly higher in AM inoculated seedlings than in non-inoculated seedlings. Mycorrhization led to decrease in alkalinity of the rhizosphere soil from pH 8.5 to 7.4. Under nursery conditions, the degree of mycorrhizal dependency increased with age of C. siamea seedling. On transplantation to the field, the survival rate of mycorrhizal seedlings (75%–90%) was higher than that of non-mycorrhizal seedlings (40%). Besides better survival rate, AM inoculation improved the growth performance of seedlings in terms of height and stem diameter. Among the two AM fungi used, the efficiency of Glomus macrocarpum was higher than that of G. fasciculatum under both nursery and field conditions.This revised version was published online in May 2005 with corrected page numbers.  相似文献

The present study deals with effects of flooding depth on growth, morphology and photosynthesis in Alnus japonica species thorough one field study and two controlled experiments. In the field study performed in Kushiro Mire, Hokkaido Island, Japan, tree heights and stem diameters decreased with an increase in water depth accompanied with the reduction of soil redox potential. In contrast, the rate of multiple stems per individual tree increased. In the controlled experiments for seedlings flooding suppressed the shoot elongation and biomass increment in roots. However, diameter increment around water levels, epicormic shoot development and adventitious root formation were enhanced in flooded seedlings. The photosynthetic rate and stomatal conductance of flooded seedlings also were lowered with an increase in flooding depth. The recovery of the reduced photosynthetic rate and stomatal conductance occurred simultaneously with the advancement of adventitious root formation in the flooded seedlings. These results indicate the importance of a series of morphological changes occurring on stems around water levels in flood tolerance in A. japonica species.  相似文献

拟南芥 AtFBDL1 基因是FBD-like基因家族的一员,其编码蛋白含有类似于F-box的结构域。表达模式网络预测结果显示该基因在茎顶端分生组织中高丰度表达,但对于FBD-like基因家族的研究还很少,其功能目前尚不明确。为此,本研究通过组织半定量表达分析和GUS染色显示 AtFBDL1 基因在拟南芥中具有时空表达特异性。结果表明:在真叶形成前和形成初期,该基因主要在茎顶端分生组织和下胚轴区域表达;真叶形成后,该基因在下胚轴的表达明显减少,而主要集中在茎顶端分生组织表达。遗传转化显示:与野生型植株相比,过表达 AtFBDL1 基因的植株生长发育缓慢,抽薹时间推迟3 4 d,莲座叶叶片面积减小,叶片数目平均增多10片,并且伴随有变态叶出现;过表达植株株高比野生型矮,株高最大差值达到12 cm。共表达网络预测 AtFBDL1 与多个与生长素和花发育相关的基因具有共表达关系。以上研究结果表明: AtFBDL1 基因在拟南芥的生长发育过程中,特别是在顶端分生组织分化过程中起重要作用。  相似文献

The effects of Timentin and cefotaxime (Cef) on shoot regeneration of the London plane tree (Platanus acerifolia Willd.) and their use for the suppression of Agrobacterium tumefaciens in Agrobacterium-mediated genetic transformation were compared. The effect of warm storage (15°C) for 0, 15 or 31 days, applied after cold storage until April, and date of lifting to cold storage on the physiological condition and field performance of two-year-old oak seedlings (Quercus robur L.) was investigated. Assessments before planting included plant moisture status, root and shoot dry weight, root growth potential (RGP), while after planting root growth, shoot growth phenology, shoot and root dry matter accumulation and stem quality were assessed. Warm storage effects were large, but lift date effects were small. Warm storage for 31 days reduced height and diameter growth, stem quality, total biomass, root growth, and reduced stem quality in the field, but 15 days storage had a smaller effect. Warm storage delayed bud break and shoot growth cessation but survival was unaffected. The depletion of food reserves during storage and low moisture availability might have caused shoot dieback leading to the development of poor quality stems. There was evidence that dry weight fraction of both the shoot tip and the taproot provided good information on the quality of the stock before planting. RGP was also a good indicator of quality. Electrolyte leakage readings from fine and taproots were not reliable indicators of plant quality.  相似文献

The causal relationships between shoot growth variables were analysed on the basis of a study in the Phytotron where six full‐sib families of Picea abies L. (Karst.) were grown for six growth periods. Phenotypic correlations and path analysis were used for the analysis of causes. The phenotypic correlations were estimated in three different ways: 1) separate analyses within each growth period based on individual tree data, 2) based on family means at different growth periods (0, and 3) using differences in family means between two consecutive growth periods (dt). The two methods based on t or dt‐values gave different results in a number of cases. We argue that, because of the rapid concurrent changes that occurred between growth periods, we could not conclude that the correlations based on family means (t) reflected causal relations and, also, that the method based on dt‐values gives a better indication of causal relationships between different variables. Using dt‐values, the variation in shoot elongation period was mainly explained by the variation in free growth (82%) while the variation in shoot growth initiation only explained a minor fraction. Variation in leader length was mainly explained by growth rate and only to a minor extent by shoot elongation period, meaning that the observed decrease in shoot elongation period did not cause a corresponding changé in leader length. One conclusion from this finding is that we do not necessarily lose growth capacity if we breed for a better adapted growth rhythm (i.e. shorter shoot elongation period) of the seedlings.  相似文献

Shoot and fruit borer, Leucinodes orbonalis Guenee, is a serious pest of eggplant (Solanum melongena L.). Management practices of this obnoxious pest are limited to frequent spray of chemical insecticides. Due to increasing levels of resistance of L. orbonalis to different insecticides there is an urgent need to test new chemicals. In this study, nine insecticides such as azadirachtin 0.03EC, abamectin 1.8EC, flubendiamide 24WG, chlorpyriphos 20EC, cartap 50SP, carbosulfan 20EC, thiodicarb 75WP, cypermethrin 10EC, and lambdacyhalothrin 2.5EC belonging to different chemical groups were tested against eggplant shoot and fruit borer in laboratory and field. In laboratory trial, carbosulfan and flubendiamide showed the highest toxicity against fourth instar larvae of L. orbonalis after 24 and 48 h of exposure, respectively. In field trials, they reduced more than 80% shoot and fruit infestation in winter, and 80% shoot and 70% fruit infestation in summer over control. Carbosulfan protected the highest amount of healthy fruit yield in both cropping seasons. Flubendiamide also showed the similar efficacy. Cartap and thiodicarb were moderately effective in both the seasons. Efficacy of cypermethrin and abamectin was moderate in winter but low in summer. Lambdacyhalothrin and chlorpyriphos although reduced shoot and fruit infestation of eggplant and protected higher yield as compared to control, their effectiveness was not satisfactory. The performance of azadirachtin against the pest both in the laboratory and field trials was the poorest while that of carbosulfan and flubendiamide was the best. Thus, it is suggested that carbosulfan and flubendiamide may be used for the control of L. orbonalis in eggplant.  相似文献

A protocol was developed for shoot proliferation and plantlet formation of Khaya senegalensis, an important medicinal and timber plantation species introduced to Australia and southern Asia from western and central Africa. We assessed effects of the plant growth regulators, benzyladenine, kinetin, naphthalene acetic acid and gibberellic acid, on shoot proliferation and subsequent plantlet conversion. Shoot proliferation over four passages was higher in media containing benzyladenine than in media containing other growth regulators, and optimal proliferation from seed of three different sources was consistently obtained in medium containing 4.4 μM benzyladenine. Shoots from this medium were converted to plantlets at high frequencies (76–90%) after treatment with 19.6 μM indole-3-butyric acid, and almost all plantlets were successfully acclimatized to nursery conditions. These methods provide the means for establishing in vitro and ex vitro clone banks of juvenile K. senegalensis trees for field selection of desired genotypes and tropical plantation establishment.  相似文献

孟加拉东南部土壤中的砷含量很高,不仅威胁人的健康,而且对土壤也有破坏作用。云南石梓(Gmelina arborea)在孟加拉是个快速生长的树种,也是含砷土壤中的潜力树种。研究评价了含砷试验土中丛枝菌根真菌对云南石梓(Gmelina arborea)生长的影响。播种前,四种不同浓度的砷(10mg·kg-1、25mg·kg-1、50mg·kg-1和100mg·kg-1)被加入到试验土中。记录生长参数,如,植物的根、苗鲜重、干重、冠幅径、根长和苗高、根瘤菌和孢子菌群落。菌根植株较非菌根植株生长好。与其它含砷量高的土壤中植株的生长情况相比,在含砷量为10-mg·kg-1的土壤中,菌根植株和菌根生长效果最佳,菌根植株生物量最高。随着砷浓度的增加,种苗生长,根瘤菌和孢子菌群落均明显降低p0.05)。与非菌根植株比较,菌根植株高生长增加了40%,生物量增加了2.4倍。研究表明,根瘤菌接种可以减少有害土壤中的云南石梓(Gmelina arborea)的初生长的影响。  相似文献

Daniellia oliveri is an indigenous tree with multiple coppicing that is harvested as firewood by local people from savannas and traditional fallows in West Africa. We investigated the effects of periodic weed removal on D. oliveri resprouting and growth in traditional fallows and its use for firewood production by smallholder harvesters. Protected plots were established in D. oliveri dominated fallows at four sites with contrasting soil types. The weedy control plots experienced periodic fires and grass competition. Sizes of firewood logs were surveyed on local markets and used to estimate the quantity of marketable firewood for each treatment. The species sprouted vigorously, forming pure stands. Leading shoot density on weed-free plots was three times higher, reaching 7,250 ± 454 shoots ha−1 34 months after land clearance when compared to 2,425 ± 215 shoots ha−1 on weedy plots. The weed removal treatment increased shoot height from 18 to 34 months after land clearance, while shoot diameter was not affected. After 24 months, 50% of the shoots were of marketable size for the weedy treatment, while this was reached at 18 months for the weed-free treatment.  相似文献

Acacia mangium is a fast-growing tree widely planted in tropical countries because of its rapid growth, high wood density, high fiber quality, and good adaptability. Despite its importance as a fiber source in the pulp and paper industry, a large-scale analysis of expressed sequence tags (ESTs) has not been performed in A. mangium. In this study, we sequenced 10 752 clones of a normalized complementary DNA (cDNA) library prepared from A. mangium developing secondary xylem and shoot, and obtained a total of 8963 ESTs. The ESTs were assembled into 6220 unigenes comprising 1614 contigs and 4606 singletons. The unigene set was then subjected to various bioinformatic analyses. BlastN searches of the unigene set against the Gene Index Databases of soybean, Medicago truncatula, Lotus japonicus, grape, poplar, spruce, and pine demonstrated that the largest number of unigenes shared homologies with the soybean Gene Indices. BlastX searches against the TAIR9 peptide database enabled us to annotate the unigenes. Based on the annotation, we discussed whether the unigenes involved in the cell cycle, cell growth, shoot apical meristem development, and cell wall biosynthesis were present. This new genomic resource will accelerate the functional genomics of wood formation and molecular breeding to improve the wood properties of A. mangium.  相似文献

The kinetics of xylem formation in four-year-old plants of Swietenia mahagoni (L.) Jacq. and Khaya ivorensis A. Chev. were studied by means of high resolution laser measurements (accuracy: ±2 μm) in a spatial resolution of 18.7 to 94.1 μm and a temporal resolution of 1 to 60 s. The radial enlargement of the xylem cells was completed within 0.36 to 8.85 hours in Swietenia and within 0.52 to 12.03 hours in Khaya, while secondary wall formation and lignification lasted days to weeks. Cell enlargement of vessels and ray parenchyma was significantly faster than radial enlargement of fibres and axial parenchyma. The processes of formation of the secondary cell wall and the lignification were slower in fibres than in vessels and parenchyma cells. In Swietenia new secondary cell formation was induced in distinct growth periods almost simultaneously in the whole shoot, while in Khaya new cell formation was restricted to parts of the shoot. Growth stresses in the shoot were studied in terms of released strain. Higher growth stresses were observed in the shoot of Khaya compared to Swietenia. The results indicate that the higher growth stresses in the xylem of Khaya compared to Swietenia originate in the different kinetics of cell development of different cell types in combination with the heterogenous sequence of cell formation within the shoot. To assess the effects of seedling spacing on one-year-old seedling morphology in the nursery, seeds of three provenances of Fraxinus angustifolia were sown at five different seedling spacings within rows of two different spacings in the seedbed. Subsequent growth performance of one-year-old seedlings was assessed by planting in the forest. Within row spacings were: 4.3, 5.0, 6.3, 8.3, and 12.5 cm, and there were five rows at 20 cm apart, or three rows at 33 cm apart across the 1.2 m wide seedbeds. Both spacings within and between rows significantly affected shoot height, root collar diameter, root dry weight and shoot dry weight, but not root/shoot ratio. Wider spacings produced larger seedlings, but only the wider spacing within rows significantly increased fine and coarse root mass. Provenances showed significant differences in diameter, root/shoot ratio, and fine and coarse roots, and they also showed interactions with row spacings in height and diameter measurements. One year after outplanting, diameter growth was significantly related to provenance, and diameter growth was 88% greater for trees from 33 cm nursery row spacing than those from 20 cm nursery row spacing.  相似文献

A study was carried out to determine the influence of different types of sludges (municipal, industrial and residential) on field germination, growth and nodulation of L. leucocephala seedlings in the nursery. Before sowing of seeds, different combinations of sludges were incorporated with the nutrient deficient natural forest soils. Field germination, nodulation status and physical growth parameters of seedlings (shoot and root length, vigor index, collar diameter, leaf number, fresh and dry weight of shoot and root and total dry biomass increment) were recorded after three and six months of seed sowing. Field germination, nodulation status and growth parameters were varied significantly in the soil amended with sludges in comparison to control. The highest number of nodule was recorded from soil amended with residential sludge ( 1:1 ) and highest fresh and dry nodule weight was also found from the same combination in both three and six month old seedlings. In case of growth parameters, the highest growth was recorded from soil and residential sludge ( 1:1 ) combination compared to control. From the study, it can be recommended that soil amended with residential sludge ( 1:1 ) provide better field germination, growth and nodule formation of L. leucocephala in degraded soil.  相似文献
