Abstract. Nine samples of Atlantic salmon, Salmo salar L., from four different rivers in Asturias (northern Spain) and three different life stages (fry, parr, adult) were karyotyped. The distributions of 2n chromosome numbers in the samples were not statistically different, suggesting the Asturian Salmo salar populations have the same chromosomal polymorphism make-up. They were, however, significantly different from populations in Scotland and Norway used to stock many Asturian rivers. 相似文献

Abstract. Antibiotic sensitivity patterns of 304 isolates of Aeromonas salmonicida from 229 outbreaks of furunculosis among salmon in Scotland between 1988 and 1990 were investigated. Fifty-five per cent were resistant to oxytetracycline and 37% resistant to oxolinic acid. Multiple resistance was common (52%) and 18 out of 19 antibiograms which were found in the first year recurred in the succeeding year. More than a quarter of the outbreaks were associated with two or more A. salmonicida variants distinguishable by their antibiotic sensitivity patterns. The implications of these findings in the control of furunculosis are considered. 相似文献

Releases of hatchery-reared smolts of Atlantic salmon, Salmo salar L., in the Rivers Orkla, Gaula and Alta, Norway yielded large percentages of strays (194, 13.7 and 13.8% respectively), based on recaptures from anglers. Homing precision to the rivers of release was independent of the release site on the river. Distribution of recaptured adult salmon within the rivers was dependent on the release site; upstream releases yielded more upstream recaptures than did downstream releases. 相似文献

Abstract. Forty oxytetracycline-resistant isolates of Aeromonas salmonicida obtained from outbreaks of furunculosis in Atlantic salmon in Scotland were tested for their susceptibility to 12 antibacterial agents. There were 10 resistance patterns with multiple resistance to two to six antibacterial agents. Transferable R-plasmids encoding oxytetracycline resistance were demonstrated in 11 out of the 40 isolates. The resistance transferred was multiple; to oxytetracycline, streptomycin, sulphamethoxine and trimethoprim, or to oxytetracycline and one or two of these in combination. Oxytetracycline resistance was transferred in a single, large step, >250-fold increase, and the MICs for individual transconjugants from mating populations were the same. 相似文献

Abstract – Ultrasonic telemetry and hydrodynamic modelling were used to study the migratory behaviour of 54 wild Atlantic salmon ( Salmo salar ) smolt captured in freshwater during their downstream migration and tracked in 2 years through a shallow estuary system. A high-density, fixed array of receivers provided detailed spatial and temporal resolution of behaviour in the second year of study. Smolt migration in the river occurred mostly at night and downstream migration was slower during the day. In the estuary, smolt moved seaward on ebbing tides and landward on flooding tides. The effect of current velocity was greater during the night than during the day. We documented for the first time that current velocity and diurnal period only accounted for approximately one-third of the variation in smolt ground speeds in the estuary, indicating that smolt movements were far less passive than previously reported. Smolt energetic status had no effect on smolt swimming behaviour or migratory performance. With an increase in salinity, smolt seaward movements during flooding tides were more frequent, and overall seaward ground velocity increased. The increase in salinity experienced by the smolt during their migration through the leading edge of saltwater intrusion thus induced a behavioural transition from a more passive, fluvial migration to a more active- and seaward-oriented migration. 相似文献

Three hundred and one parr of wild salmon, Salmo salar L., from three river systems in Denmark were examined in December 2005 and August 2006 for gyrodactylid infections. The species determination was done by morphological analyses of the opisthaptoral hard parts and molecular analyses of the internal transcribed spacer (ITS) region using PCR restriction fragment length polymorphism (RFLP) and sequencing. Five species of the genus Gyrodactylus were found: Gyrodactylus derjavini, Gyrodactylus teuchis, Gyrodactylus truttae, Gyrodactylus arcuatus and Gyrodactylus salaris. The parasite species G. derjavini dominated over G. teuchis and G. truttae and only one specimen of G. arcuatus and one specimen of G. salaris were recovered. This specimen of G. salaris had the same mutation in the ITS-region as a previously described non-pathogenic Danish G. salaris variant. The prevalence of gyrodactylids on the salmon ranged from 0% to 100% but the mean abundance never exceeded 12.8. 相似文献

Abstract Seasonal differences in smolt traits and the post-smolt survival of wild Atlantic salmon, Salmo salar L., were investigated by smolt trapping and Carlin-tagging in the River Simojoki, northern Finland between 1991 and 2004. The annual trapping season was divided into two halves based on the median catch date. Smolt length was significantly higher during the first half of the season, while differences in smolt weight were typically small. Smolt age was always significantly higher during the first half of the season because older smolts tended to migrate earlier in the season. Many smolts migrating during the early season and almost all smolts migrating later had started their new growth, indicating that smolts grow in the spring before sea entry. The differences in recaptures between smolts tagged during the first and second halves were insignificant. Although variations in smolt traits and environmental conditions can produce inter-annual variation in post-smolt survival, their seasonal differences seem to be too small to have an effect. 相似文献

Dispersal and growth were studied in Atlantic salmon, Salmo salar L., fry from a natural isolated redd. The distribution of fry leaving the redd was strongly peaked, 80% being caught within a 2-week period. Early in the dispersal period, all fry leaving the redd had remnants of yolk sac and had not fed; by half way through the dispersal period, no fry had any visible yolk, but 35% still had empty stomachs. Fry leaving the redd during the first half of the dispersal period tended to settle in different first feeding sites than those dispersing later. Predation on fry by larger salmonids was frequent, especially during dispersal. Coefficients of variation for length, weight and condition factor increased significantly over the study period and for individually recognised fry, growth rates varied markedly. Thus, individual salmon fry differ in physical status on emergence from the redd and these differences are amplified during the first few weeks after emergence. 相似文献

A toga-like virus was recently isolated in the present authors' laboratory from Atlantic salmon during an outbreak of PD in Ireland (Nelson, McLoughlin, Rowley, Platten & McCormick 1995). When inoculated into Atlantic salmon post-smolts, this virus, known as salmon pancreas disease virus (SPDV), caused pathological changes in the pancreas, heart and skeletal muscle which were indistinguishable from those observed in natural outbreaks of PD (McLoughlin, Nelson, Rowley, Cox & Grant 1996). In 1996 a serological survey was carried out to determine the presence and distribution of antibodies to SPDV in Irish, Scottish and Norwegian farm-reared Atlantic salmon (McLoughlin, Rowley & Doherty 1998). The results of this survey indicated that SPDV is present in the major European salmon-producing countries. The present paper describes the first isolation of SPDV from farm-reared, PD-affected Atlantic salmon in Scotland. 相似文献

Abstract. This study describes differences in scale characters between fanned, ranched and wild Atlantic salmon, Salmo salar h., and proposes a method to distinguish between the different groups. Six characters were found to differ: (1) smolt size; (2) smolt age; (3) transition from fresh water to salt water; (4) sea winter bands; (5) summer checks; (6) replacement scales. Information on marine and freshwater survival and exploitation of River Bush salmon was developed into a model illustrating the potential ranges of grilse production per 1000 smolts. Values were attributed to the grilse 'crop' at each of three potential production stages – commercial landings, angler catches and fertilized egg production – using both published and derived valuations. A biological model was developed to calculate annual survival between life stages of juvenile Atlantic salmon, Salmo salar L., in Catamaran Brook, a small stream basin (52 km2) in the Miramichi River catchment in New Brunswick, Canada. Seven years’ data (1990–1996) were used in the model. Input variables included: daily fish counts and measurements of parr (3–4 age classes), smolts, and adult salmon at a fish-counting fence near the stream mouth; biennial quantification of all habitat types along the watercourse; fish density estimated by electric fishing at 30 sites; and estimates of young-of-the-year emigration via stream drift. Continuous recording of stream discharge provided data to assist in interpretation of survival estimates. Annual survival for juvenile salmon in their first 3 years of life in the stream averaged between 31% and 34%. The greatest annual variation (CV = 0.699) occurred at the egg to 0+ (summer) stage with a low of 9.2% survival recorded for a winter with an atypical midwinter flood event; parr and pre-smolt survival were similarly affected. Survival from egg deposition (after correction for losses caused by predation and retention/non-fertilization) to smolt emigration was between 0.16% and 0.52%, which is low relative to estimates from many other studies. Survival of smolts to returning 1-sea-winter adults (grilse) averaged 8.5%. Potential errors in the computation of the model are discussed, e.g. inaccurate counts of spawning adults during high autumn stream flow. A possible explanation for the low egg to smolt survival was the environmental conditions experienced during various winters. Mean egg survival was 1.3 times higher (39.3%) and egg to smolt survival increased to 1.03% when the two winters characterized by extremely low discharge or midwinter freshets were excluded from the calculation. Density-dependent factors related to a beaver dam, which limited spawning distribution, may also have contributed to poor survival and increased fry emigration in one year. Environmental factors, particularly winter conditions, in streams such as Catamaran Brook may act as bottlenecks to natural production of Atlantic salmon. 相似文献

Investigation of cranial and spinal deformities in Atlantic salmon smolts from Chile immediately after sea transfer, over two successive crops, demonstrated ankylosis of the mandibular articulation, spinal foreshortening, fracture of vertebrae and rarefaction of osseous and cartilaginous tissues including the operculum. As a result the mouth was permanently agape and opercula could be folded back on themselves. All affected fish had been transferred to sea water at 20 °C plus and fed on particular commercial diets. Fish in cooler areas, or on diets high in vitamin C and phosphorus in the high temperature zone, were clinically normal. The condition has not recurred following dietary adjustment. 相似文献

Abstract. The stomach contents of 256 Atlantic salmon, Salmo salar L., of fork lengths 53–66cm, caught in bag nets on the Scottish west coast near Ullapool, were examined between June 1983 and July 1986. A total of 61 fish contained fish in the stomach or had faecal pellets containing fish bones in the gut. All recognizable whole fish were sandeels, Ammodytes marinus Raitt, ranging in size from 4.5 to 15cm. No evidence for crustacean or other non-fish prey items was found. Results indicate that feeding salmon were caught up to a certain cut-off point in June or early July, after which all salmon sampled were not feeding. It is suggested that either there is a local feeding stock of salmon or that fish feed during migration from the Faroe Isles or other possible distant water origins. 相似文献

The development of cataracts in Atlantic salmon, Salmo salar L., was studied in 16 groups of smolts fed diets differing in prooxidant (iron, copper, manganese) and antioxidant (vitamin E, vitamin C, astaxanthin) composition and lipid level for 23 weeks in sea water, using a 2(7-3) reduced factorial design. The seven dietary variables were systematically varied at low (requirement level and 150 g lipid kg(-1)) and high levels (below known toxic levels and 320 g lipid kg(-1)). A mean endpoint cataract incidence of approximately 36% was observed. High dietary levels of vitamin C and astaxanthin reduced cataract frequency, whereas high dietary lipid level, iron and manganese were associated with increased cataract frequencies. Considering the nutritional status of selected organs of the fish, only the status of ascorbic acid correlated negatively to cataract development (P < 0.05). The lens glutathione (GSH) status was not correlated to cataract frequency, nor statistically explained by the dietary variables. However, the study shows that balancing the diet with respect to pro- and antioxidant nutrients may significantly protect Atlantic salmon against development of cataracts. An incidence of reversible osmotic cataract observed at week 14 was positively correlated to plasma glucose concentration. 相似文献

An investigation was undertaken to establish aspects of the epizootiology of erythrocytic inclusion bodies in wild Atlantic salmon, Salmo salar L., in Scotland. From 1992 to 1995, adult and juvenile salmon, from Scottish rivers, were screened for the presence of erythrocytic inclusion bodies and haematological parameters measured. The nature of the inclusion bodies was assessed through transmission electron microscopy, negative-staining and blood smear-staining techniques and was demonstrated to be viral in origin with characteristics similar to a member of the family Togaviridae. Specifically, these were a viral genome of single-stranded RNA, spherical virion morphology with an icosahedral core, average size of 70 nm and a buoyant density of 1.15-1.20 g cm(-3). The cytoplasmic inclusions were either large, single inclusions (1-2 microm) or smaller multiple inclusions (0.5-1 microm). A total of 4.2% (n=48) and 27.7% (n=213) of the parr and adult salmon, respectively, were positive for the presence of the inclusions. The intensity of the inclusions, when present, varied from light in parr to moderate and heavy in adults, when graded according to the number of inclusions per field of view. Neither haematological variations nor clinical disease was associated with the presence or absence of viral inclusions. 相似文献
