Identifying and quantifying attributes that help predict rates of heterotrophic soil respiration is a key issue. Similarly, assessing the temperature sensitivity (Q10) of soil C is critical to establishing if increases in Mean Annual Temperature will serve to further increase atmospheric CO2. Using organic soils from three sub-alpine communities that differ significantly in structure, species composition and productivity, we measured the respiratory quotient (RQ = rates of CO2 efflux/rates of O2 uptake) and temperature sensitivity of heterotrophic respiration during long-term (120 days) incubation. As a directly measurable parameter, RQ is free of empirical assumptions and provides an additional tool that can be used in conjunction with constants derived from fitted Arrhenius or exponential equations, to help understand shifts in microbial use of C substrates and how changes in vegetation might affect soil processes. Q10 did not change significantly over the course of a 120-day incubation for any of our studied soils. RQs varied with vegetation type and were consistently lower in grassland soils than woodland soils. RQs also varied during long-term incubations and declined consistently with time for grassland soils. RQs declined towards the end of the 120-day incubation for woodland soils. The generally low Ea for these soils from sub-alpine vegetation types in Australia, and the fairly rapid decline in RQ during incubation, suggest the likely greater temperature sensitivity of recalcitrant C relative to labile C could provide a strong positive feedback to increases in Mean Annual Temperature.  相似文献

Heavy metal availability, microbial biomass and respiration, bacterial diversity and enzyme activity were studied in soils from long-term field experiments contaminated with Mn-Zn- or Cd-Ni-rich sludge, incorporated into soils at two different rates. Soils that never received sludge were used as controls. Microbial biomass C content (BC) and soil respiration (CO2-C) were slightly reduced in soils amended with Mn-Zn at the higher incorporation rate whereas in soils receiving Cd-Ni-rich sludge BC and respiration were unaffected. Metabolic quotient values (qCO2) calculated by the BC-to-CO2-C ratio were not significantly different, regardless of the sludge type whereas the microbial biomass C-to-total organic C (BC-to-TOC) ratios were significantly reduced in the soils receiving the higher rates of both sludge types. Phosphomonoesterase, β-glucosidase and arylsulfatase activities and hydrolase-to-BC ratios, were significantly reduced in soils amended with Ni-Cd-sludge at both rates, whereas the Mn-Zn-sludge only reduced the arylsulfatase activity at the higher rate. Protease activity was generally higher in all the sludge-amended soils as compared to control soils whereas urease activity was unaffected by sludge amendments. The structure of the bacterial community, as determined by denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis (DGGE), was different in the sludge-amended soils as compared to the respective controls. The most important changes were observed in the soils amended with high-level Ni-Cd sludge. Because some of the adverse effects were observed at moderate contamination levels, our results indicate that the presence of certain heavy metal combinations can be a serious limitation for sludge disposal.  相似文献

The carbon budget in agroecosystems with spring wheat was studied in long-term (1997–2004) field experiments on gray forest soils in the forest-steppe of the Lake Baikal region, including soils polluted with the fluorides emitted by an aluminum plant. Pollution was revealed to increase the deficit in the carbon budget due to the more intense mineralization of organic matter and CO2 emission from the soils. Raising of the crops’ productivity upon permanent application of fertilizers may provide maintenance of a positive carbon budget.  相似文献

The results of long-term (1992–2005) monitoring of the carbon compounds transformation in soils of forest- steppe agroecosystems polluted by heavy metals in the Baikal region in the years different from the “climatic norm” are discussed. The influence of environmental factors on the functioning of microbial community was estimated by the Cmicr content and CO2 emission. The changes in the ecophysiological parameters (Cmicr/Corg and C-CO2/Cmicr, mg/(g h) related to the availability of the substrate and intensity of carbon (re)immobilization in different soils revealed the differences in the formation of a stable microbial community dependent on the environmental factors, especially in anomalous years. The use of a systemic approach and analysis of the carbon compounds transformation based on the proportion between the flows of net-mineralized and (re)immobilized carbon (NM: RI) allowed to evaluate integrally the functioning regime of the agroecosystems and the ecological impact on them. The differences in the functioning of agroecosystems on different heavy metal-polluted soils identified on the background of climatic changes are suitable for forecasting the current state and development of agroecosystems. For agroecosystems of this region, C-CO2 emission was estimated for the first time; it was more intense from the soils with the high humus content than from the soils poor in humus (141 and 101 g C/m2, respectively).  相似文献

One hundred-eighteen surface soil samples (59 samples from cultivated areas and 59 samples from virgin soils) were studied to ascertain if potassium (K) quantity-intensity (Q/I) parameters of the soils are being changed by long-term sugar beet cropping. Long-term cultivation resulted in a significant decline in the equilibrium activity ratio (ARe K) values from 0.012 to 0.0047 (moles/L)1/2 (a drop of 61%) and from 0.013 to 0.008 (a drop of 38%) in Typic calcixerpts and Typic endoaquepts, respectively. Paired t-test revealed that continuous sugar beet cultivation led to significant changes in the easily exchangeable K (ΔK0) values from ?0.69 to ?0.28 cmolc/kg (a rise of 59%) the Typic calcixerepts soils. The highest values for PBCK were associated with the soil types which had the greatest clay contents and smectite clay minerals. Results suggest that continuous sugar beet cropping caused a great decline in K supplying power of the soils.  相似文献

The short-term pulse of carbon (C) and nitrogen (N) mineralization that accompanies the wetting of dry soils may dominate annual C and N production in many arid and semi-arid environments characterized by seasonal transitions. We used a laboratory incubation to evaluate the impact of short-term fluctuations in soil moisture on long-term carbon and nitrogen dynamics, and the degree to which rewetting enhances C and N release. Following repeated drying and rewetting of chaparral soils, cumulative CO2 release in rewet soils was 2.2-3.7 times greater than from soils maintained at equivalent mean soil moisture and represented 12-18% of the total soil C pool. Rewetting frequency did not affect cumulative CO2 release but did enhance N turnover, and net N mineralization and nitrification increased with rewetting in spite of significant reductions in nitrification potential. Litter addition decreased inorganic N release but enhanced dissolved organic nitrogen (DON) and dissolved organic carbon (DOC) from dry soils, indicating the potential importance of a litter-derived pulse to short-term nutrient dynamics.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

The Rothamsted Carbon (RothC) model, which is one of widely used soil carbon (C) models, was validated against long-term experimental datasets in Japan and modified to suit Andosols and paddy soils reflecting unique soil C turnover mechanisms in these soils. Nationwide soil C calculation system was developed by combining these modified models and spatial model input data such as weather, soil type, land use, and agricultural activities. The model was validated in China and Thailand by using long-term field experimental datasets, too. Further studies especially in tropical Asia will be needed. Matching conceptual model C pools with measurable fractions have been big challenges. Using various plant materials, two conceptual pools of plant litter, decomposable plant material (DPM) and resistant plant material (RPM), in the RothC were successfully identified. It was achieved by comparing the default proportions of DPM and RPM pools in the RothC and proportions in plant material fractions determined by two-step acid hydrolysis with H2SO4. The trial to match all of five C pools in the model, however, remains unachieved though a study was conducted comparing not only the size of C pools but mean residence time of the pools. A web-based decision support tool called ‘Visualization of CO2 absorption by soils’ was developed. This allows users to easily calculate changes in soil C, CH4 and N2O emissions, and fossil fuel consumption. With this tool, farmers can see how to improve the environmental sustainability of their products and this tool may help spread mitigation options widely. Soil C sequestration can help achieve climate change mitigation and sustainable agricultural production. Importance of long-term field observations should be more highlighted because long-term experiments have supported the development of modeling approaches. I hope models will be more widely used by decision makers. Collaboration between modeling and monitoring studies is important.  相似文献

Broadcasting of urea to agricultural soils can result in considerable losses by NH3 volatilization. However, it is unclear if the impact of this practice on NH3 emissions is further enhanced when performed on no-till (NT) soils. The objective of this study was to compare NH3 volatilization following broadcasting of urea to NT and moldboard plowed (MP) soils. Intact soil cores were taken shortly after harvest from NT and MP plots of three long-term tillage experiments in Québec (Canada) and stored for 4.5 months prior to incubation. Urea (14 g N m−2) was applied at the soil surface and NH3 volatilization was measured for 30 d using an open incubation system. Mean cumulative NH3 losses were greater (P < 0.001) in NT (3.00 g N m−2) than in MP (0.52 g N m−2). Several factors may have contributed to the higher emissions from the NT soils. Urease activity in the top 1 cm of soils was on average 4.2 times higher in NT than in MP soils. As a result, hydrolysis of urea occurred very rapidly in NT soils as indicated by enhanced NH3 emissions 4 h after application of urea. The presence of crop residues at the surface of NT soils also decreased contact of the urea granules with the soil, possibly reducing adsorption of NH4+ on soil particles. Lower volatilization on the MP soils may also have partly resulted from a fraction of urea granules falling into shallow cracks. Field trials are needed to confirm our finding that NT soils bear greater potential for NH3 volatilization following surface application of urea than MP soils.  相似文献

We conducted laboratory incubation experiments to elucidate the influence of forest type and topographic position on emission and/or consumption potentials of nitrous oxide (N2O) and methane (CH4) from soils of three forest types in Eastern Canada. Soil samples collected from deciduous, black spruce and white pine forests were incubated under a control, an NH4NO3 amendment and an elevated headspace CH4 concentration at 70% water-filled pore space (WFPS), except the poorly drained wetland soils which were incubated at 100% WFPS. Deciduous and boreal forest soils exhibited greater potential of N2O and CH4 fluxes than did white pine forest soils. Mineral N addition resulted in significant increases in N2O emissions from wetland forest soils compared to the unamended soils, whereas well-drained soils exhibited no significant increase in N2O emissions in-response to mineral N additions. Soils in deciduous, boreal and white pine forests consumed CH4 when incubated under an elevated headspace CH4 concentration, except the poorly drained soils in the deciduous forest, which emitted CH4. CH4 consumption rates in deciduous and boreal forest soils were twice the amount consumed by the white pine forest soils. The results suggest that an episodic increase in reactive N input in these forests is not likely to increase N2O emissions, except from the poorly drained wetland soils; however, long-term in situ N fertilization studies are required to validate the observed results. Moreover, wetland soils in the deciduous forest are net sources of CH4 unlike the well-drained soils, which are net sinks of atmospheric CH4. Because wetland soils can produce a substantial amount of CH4 and N2O, the contribution of these wetlands to the total trace gas fluxes need to be accounted for when modeling fluxes from forest soils in Eastern Canada.  相似文献

The tight coupling between nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) suggests that P availability may affect soil microbial N dynamics in terrestrial ecosystems. However, how P addition affects the internal N transformations in P-deficient agricultural soil remains poorly understood. We hypothesized that an increase in gross microbial N rates in P-deficient soil should occur after long-term P inputs in agricultural soils. We thus conducted a 15N pool dilution experiment to quantify the gross microbial N transformation rates after long-term mineral fertilizer applications in an upland fluvo-aquic soil (from Fengqiu with pH 8.55) and upland red soil (from Qiyang with pH 5.49) in China. We found that P addition significantly enhanced the gross N mineralization and immobilization rates when N and K were also applied, probably due to the increased soil total C and N concentrations at both soils. Also, gross nitrification rate was stimulated by P addition, perhaps because of enhanced gross N mineralization rates and associated NH4+ substrate availability. Our results showed that long-term P addition may stimulate soil gross N dynamics and hence increase overall N availability for crops in P-deficient agricultural soils.  相似文献

Here, we examine the effect of long-term pH differences and short-term pH change on N2O emissions from soil, and the microbial source (ammonia oxidation versus denitrification) of 15N-N2O emissions. 15N-fertiliser (20 g N m?2; 10 atom% excess 15N) was applied to (1) a silt loam soil of pH 7 held at 50% and 65% water-filled pore space (WFPS) (experiment 1) and (2) a loamy sand soil maintained at pH 4.5 and pH 7 for over 40 years (experiment 2). Soils were limed with CaCO3 or acidified with H2SO4, and comparisons were made with unadjusted soils. Ammonia oxidation was the main microbial source of 15N-N2O in soils limed to pH 7.0–8.1, unadjusted pH 7.1 (Experiment 1) and long-term pH 7 (experiment 2) soils. Eighty percent of 15N-N2O from the long-term pH 4.5 soil (experiment 2) was derived from denitrification suggesting a possible inhibition of N2O reduction. Short-term acidification to pH 5.6 or 4.3 lowered N2O emissions. Liming of the pH 4.5 soil resulted in over four times greater N2O emission (11 mg 14+15N-N2O m?2 over 41 days) than from the long-term pH 7.0 soil (experiment 2), with an associated increase in ammonia oxidiser-N2O and decrease in denitrifier-N2O production. This is the first report of a pH-induced change in microbial source of N2O. Our results highlight the importance of distinguishing between short- and long-term effects of pH management when predicting N2O emissions from soil, as they exhibit predominance of different microbial groups in N2O production, with likely adaptation of the microbial community.  相似文献

Adverse changes in the physical and chemical properties of arable gray forest and soddy meadow soils (forest-steppe zone, Lake Baikal region) polluted with fluorides emitted by an aluminum smelter in Irkutsk are shown. The field experiments of the long-term (1997–2005) monitoring and laboratory incubation experiments revealed that the CO2 emission from the gray forest soil was higher than from the soddy meadow soil. Its intensity depended on the soil properties and buffering capacity of the soils to fluorides, as well as on the content of water-soluble fluorides and the hydrothermal factors.  相似文献

Change in temperature sensitivity of soil organic carbon (SOC) decomposition with change in soil qualities (i.e. decomposability or lability) is one of the most important issues to be evaluated for projection of future CO2 emissions from soils. We inversely estimated the temperature sensitivity of SOC decomposition rate by applying a hybrid of the Metropolis-Hasting algorithm and the particle filter method to the extended Rothamsted carbon model (RothC), together with long-term (9 years) experimental data on SOC obtained at five sites in Japanese upland soils. Contrary to the prediction of the Arrhenius kinetics theory, we found no significant differences in temperature sensitivity among soils with different qualities (represented as soil compartments in the RothC model). We also confirmed that there was a positive correlation between the relative temperature sensitivity of the humus compartment and future total CO2 emissions. The RothC model with default parameterization tended to overestimate future total CO2 emissions relative to the calibrated model, and the degree of overestimation was larger than that of underestimation.  相似文献

A new method for the determination of biomass in soil is described. Soil is fumigated with CHCl3 vapour, the CHCl3 removed and the soil then incubated. The biomass is calculated from the difference between the amounts of CO2 evolved during incubation by fumigated and unfumigated soil. The method was tested on a set of nine soils from long-term field experiments. The amounts of biomass C ha?1 in the top 23 cm of soil from plots on the Broadbalk continuous wheat experiment were 530 kg (unmanured plot), 590 (plot receiving inorganic fertilizers) and 1160 (plot receiving farmyard manure). Soils that had been fallowed for 1 year contained less biomass than soils carrying a crop. A calcareous woodland soil contained 1960 kg biomass C ha?1, and an unmanured soil under permanent grass 2020. The arable soils contained about 2% of their organic C in the biomass; uncultivated soils a little more—about 3%.  相似文献

The studies of recent soils and paleosols buried under kurgans created in the periods of long-term aridization (3000–2000 BC) and climatic optimum (13th–14th centuries AD) were performed in steppes of the southeastern part of the East European Plain (Privolzhskaya Upland and Caspian Lowland) in order to determine the rate of carbon dioxide production by the soil samples at the natural moisture and after moistening up to 60% of the total moisture capacity. The CO2 emission from the samples of paleosols corresponding to the period of climatic aridization in the Lower Volga River at their natural moisture status was lower than that from the samples of background surface soils, whereas the CO2 emission from the samples of paleosols buried under optimum climatic conditions was higher than that from the samples of background surface soils. After moistening of the samples, the increase in the CO2 emission from the paleosol samples depended on the actual humidity of the climate in the corresponding period.  相似文献

Samples of soddy-podzolic soil (long-term overgrown fallow and continuous bare fallow), gray forest soil (forest, farming agrocenosis), and a typical chernozem (virgin steppe, forest area, farming agrocenosis, continuous bare fallow) have been incubated under stable conditions; other samples of these soils have been subjected to six drying-wetting-incubation-freezing-thawing-incubation cycles during 136 days. The wetting of dried soils and the thawing of frozen soils result in an abrupt but short increase in the emission rate of C-CO2 by 2.7–12.4 and 1.6–2.7 times, respectively, compared to the stable incubation conditions. As the soil is depleted in potentially mineralizable organic matter, the rate of the C-CO2 emission pulses initiated by disturbing impacts decreases. The cumulative extra production of C-CO2 by soils of natural lands for six cycles makes up 21–40% of that in the treatments with stable incubation conditions; the corresponding value for cultivated soils, including continuous clean fallow, is in the range of 45–82%. The content of potentially mineralizable organic matter in the soils subjected to recurrent drying-wetting-freezingthawing cycles decreased compared to the soils without disturbing impacts by 1.6–4.4 times, and the mineralization constants decreased by 1.9–3.6 times. It has been emphasized that the cumulative effect of drying-wetting-freezing-thawing cycles is manifested not only in the decrease in the total Corg from the soil but also in the reduction of the mineralization potential of the soil organic matter.  相似文献

Isothermal microcalorimetry measures the thermal flows occurring in systems with very high precision and may be used to quantify carbon (C) assimilation and resource-use efficiencies in soils. We determined the thermodynamic efficiency of soil microbial communities located in soils which had received contrasting long-term management regimes (53 y) with respect to organic matter and nitrogen (N) inputs, viz. farmyard manure, sewage sludge, straw and calcium nitrate, calcium nitrate only, or ammonium sulphate. Two thermodynamic efficiency indices were considered: (i) total thermodynamic efficiency of soil microbial communities (ηeff), i.e. general heat production released following substrate addition, per unit heat energy input to the soil system, and (ii) a specific thermodynamic efficiency index of energy retained in the soil system (ηsoil). The latter index provides quantitative data on how much C is assimilated and energy retained in the soil system. Further, we derived a ‘substrate-induced heat production’ (SIHP) index, which adjusts for size of the microbial biomass. Optimised concentrations of water or glucose plus water were added to the soil samples and resultant thermal signatures and C mineralisation were determined over a 48-h incubation period at 25 °C. The thermal signatures were further related to the microbial community profiles of the soils. The phenotypic structural and functional diversity profiles of the microbial communities in soils were assessed by phospholipid fatty acid and multi-substrate induced respiration methods at the start of the experiment, confirming significant differences between all five treatments in community composition and functional capabilities. Both the total and specific thermodynamic efficiency indices of the soil microbial communities exposed to long-term stress by heavy metal toxicity (sewage sludge) and low pH ((NH4)2SO4) were significantly smaller in magnitude than those under the three conventional (i.e. Ca(NO3)2, Straw + Ca(NO3)2, farmyard manure) input regimes (P < 0.05). The SIHP index however, was highest in the treatments receiving long-term inorganic inputs, indicating more heat production per unit biomass, than that found in all three organic input regimes. These differences in efficiencies were reflected in both the phenotypic and functional profiles of the communities. These indices may provide quantification of C assimilation and resource-use efficiency under different land-use and management scenarios, and potentially allow evaluation of the role of soils in governing the terrestrial C balance by studying the fate and regulation of C in soil systems.  相似文献

The daily dynamics of the number of copiotrophic and oligotrophic bacteria (in colony-forming units) and CO2 emissions from cultivated soils after short- and long-term disturbances were studied for 25–27 days in a microfield experiment. The relationship of the wavelike fluctuations of the bacterial number and CO2 emission with the succession of the soil microbial community was determined by the polymerase chain reaction method—denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis (PCR-DGGE). Short-term disturbances involved the application of organic or mineral fertilizers, pesticides, and plant residues to the soils of different plots. The long-term effect was a result of using biological and intensive farming systems for three years. The short-term disturbances resulted in increased peaks of the bacterial number, the significance of which was confirmed by harmonics analysis. The daily dynamics of the structure of the soil microbial community, which was studied for 27 days by the DGGE method, also had an oscillatory pattern. Statistical processing of the data (principal components analysis, harmonics and cross-correlation analyses) has revealed significant fluctuations in the structure of microbial communities coinciding with those of the bacterial populations. The structure of the microbial community changed within each peak of the dynamics of the bacterial number (but not from peak to peak), pointing to the cyclical character of the short-term succession. The long-term effects resulted in a less intense response of the microbiota—a lower rate of CO2 emission from the soil cultivated according to the organic farming system.  相似文献

The soil chemical properties and microbial numbers in three volcanic ash soils and two non-volcanic ash soils, which had been continuously subjected to the same tea cultivation practices (21 y), were investigated. The results obtained were as follows. 1) pH values of all the soils gradually decreased from the original pH value (near neutral or mildly acid pH) to strongly acid values of about 4 or lower. In contrast, long-term tea cultivation practices resulted in the increase of the total C and N contents in the surface layers (0–20 cm) while the contents remained stable in the subsurface layers (20–40 cm). The increase in the organic matter content in non-volcanic ash soils was presumably due to the accumulation of microbial residues. The availability of P increased markedly. 2) Numbers of bacteria, actinomycetes, fungi, and denitrifiers were higher in volcanic ash soils than in non-volcanic ash soils, and also higher in surface layers than in subsurface layers. The results suggest that in spite of the same cultivation practices, the soil depth and soil type affected the microbial numbers in the tea soils. Numbers of autotrophic NH4 + oxidizers were low in comparison with the numbers of autotrophic NO2 - oxidizers. Influence of soil type and soil depth on autotrophic nitrifiers was not clear. 3) Total C and N contents in the tea soils were parameters closely related to the numbers of bacteria, actinomycetes, and fungi. For actinomycetes and fungi, the prediction could be more accurate, especially for total N content, if the estimations could be made within the same soil layers. The numbers per unit of C or N were higher in the surface layers than in the subsurface layers. 4) High concentration of NO3 --N in the tea soils used suggests that nitrification could occur despite the low pH value (3.2-3.8). The negative relationship between the number of total bacteria or actinomycetes and soil NH4 +-N concentration suggests that some NH4 +-N was converted to organic microbial biomass-No.  相似文献

Management of soil ecosystems requires assessment of key soil physicochemical and microbial properties and the spatial scale over which they operate. The objectives were to determine the spatial structure of microbial biomass and activity and related soil properties, and to identify spatial relationships of these properties in prairie soils under different management histories. Soil were sampled along a transect at 0.2 m intervals in each of five long-term treatments, namely, undisturbed, cattle grazed at two intensities, and cultivated with either wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) or cotton (Gossypium hirsutum L.). Contents of organic carbon (Corg), dissolved organic C (DOC), soluble nitrogen (Nsol), and microbial biomass C (Cmic) and N (Nmic) as well as dehydrogenase activity (DH) in 70 samples were evaluated. Results showed that long-term soil management altered the spatial structure and dependence of Corg and microbial biomass and activity. Cultivation has contributed to high nugget variance for Corg, Cmic, Nmic and DH which interfered with detection of spatial structure at the sampling scale used. Contents of Corg were spatially connected to microbial biomass and activity and to DOC in the uncultivated but not in the cultivated soils, indicating that various factors affected by management may operate at different spatial scales.  相似文献
