Bilateral mandibular salivary gland infarction was diagnosed in a young mature wire-haired fox terrier with a protracted history of drooling, loss of appetite, retching and vomiting. The signs were not alleviated following surgical removal of the glands. Despite supportive therapy, the animal's condition did not improve and it was killed. Histologically the enlarged affected salivary glands were almost entirely necrotic and there was evidence of reactive inflammation peripherally. The necrosis was interpreted as being due to ischaemia. The only other significant pathological findings were compensatory hypertrophy and hyperplasia of the parotid salivary glands.  相似文献

Three unusual cases of salivary gland enlargement and hypersialosis in the dog that responded to anticonvulsant therapy are reported. Presenting complaints included weight loss, hypersalivation, retching and vomiting of several weeks' duration. Two dogs were presented with enlarged painful mandibular salivary glands. The third dog exhibited bizarre behaviour (including jaw chattering) and developed enlarged painful mandibular salivary glands during hospitalisation. Fine needle aspirate cytology and biopsies from the enlarged salivary glands revealed no significant pathological changes. In one dog, an electroencephalogram revealed changes consistent with epilepsy. Hypersialism and salivary gland enlargement resolved completely during phenobarbital administration in all cases. Two dogs were successfully weaned off treatment six months after diagnosis. The remaining dog relapsed after eight months, but normalised with the addition of oral potassium bromide. It is hypothesised that the syndrome idiopathic hypersialosis may in fact be an unusual form of limbic epilepsy.  相似文献

Salivary gland necrosis in dogs: a retrospective study of 19 cases   总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3  
Salivary gland necrosis has been described in dogs and is characterised by enlarged, hard, painful salivary glands, retching and vomition or regurgitation. The cause has yet to be determined. A retrospective study of 19 dogs with the same clinical signs was undertaken for breed, age, gender, history and presenting signs, diagnostic evaluations and findings, treatment and outcome. An underlying association was identified in 16 of the 19 dogs. This included Spirocerca lupi infestation (seven dogs), megaoesophagus (three dogs) and oesophagitis, oesophageal diverticulum, giardiasis and suspected autoimmune sialadenitis. Almost all associated lesions involved the oesophagus. Where the associated disease was successfully treated, the salivary glands returned to normal and all clinical signs resolved. It is hypothesised that an afferent vagal reflex may be involved, and that the mechanism of disease is similar to the neural pathogenesis suggested for hypertrophic osteopathy; in this instance, the efferent targets are the salivary glands rather than the limbs.  相似文献

The pathogenesis of sialodacryoadenitis was studied in gnotobiotic CD rats inoculated intranasally with the causal virus. Virus replication was detected sequentially in the nasopharynx, tracheobronchial tree, cervical lymph nodes, submaxillary and parotid salivary glands, exorbital gland, and Harderian gland. Acute rhinitis appeared within 2 days after inoculation, and salivary glands had lesions in 4 days. Early changes in salivary and exorbital glands were characterized by necrosis of ductal epithelium, which rapidly progressed to widespread acinar necrosis, marked inflammation, edema and total effacement of glandular architecture. Harderian glands also had massive necrosis of tubuloalveolar units. Repair in all glands was characterized by marked squamous metaplasia of tubuloalveolar units. Repair in all glands was characterized by marked squamous metaplasia of ducts. Neutralizing and complement-fixing antibodies were detected in 7 days, and there was a concomitant decrease in tissue-virus titers. There was no detectable evidence for hematogenous spread of virus or for retrograde infection by way of major salivary ducts.  相似文献

This retrospective analysis documented the magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) appearance of normal salivary glands based on 101 studies in dogs with no detectable disease in the splanchnocranium. Surface, signal intensity, homogeneity, structure, symmetry and the relationship of glands to surrounding tissues were noted, and gland topography was assessed with E12 plastinated embedded sections. Signal intensity of salivary glands was isointense (7-40%) to hyperintense (60-90%) to muscle tissue on T1- and hyperintense on T2-weighted images. Salivary glands had an increased T1 signal after contrast medium was applied. Salivary gland structure appeared homogeneous in mandibular and major sublingual glands and heterogeneous in zygomatic and parotid glands. Consistent landmarks were the external auditory canal for parotid glands, the digastric muscle for mandibular and major sublingual glands, and the pterygopalatine fossa for zygomatic glands. The minor sublingual and ventral buccal glands could not be localized with low-field MRI.  相似文献

Heartwater has been transmitted experimentally by 12 Amblyomma species. Their importance depends on the extent of their distribution, adaptation to domestic stock and their efficacy as vectors. Except for one report of transovarial transmission, transmission is transstadial. Ticks may obtain the infection while feeding on reacting animals, subclinically infected hosts or perhaps on immune animals after reinfection. There is a marked increase in the infectivity of infected ticks during feeding but this decreases before and during moulting. The demonstration of Cowdria ruminantium in salivary glands of ticks suggests that transmission takes place via the saliva and that regurgitation from the gut may not be as important as previously thought. Transmission takes place on the 2nd day from the time infected nymphae were placed on the animals and on the 4th-day in the case of adult ticks.  相似文献

Colonies of Cowdria ruminantium were studied in midgut epithelial cells and salivary gland acini of nymphal Amblyomma hebraeum that were infected experimentally as larvae. Colonies were found in both tissues and studied with light and electron microscopy. Colonies observed within gut cells frequently contained 2 types of the organism: electron-dense and reticulated forms. The morphology of colonies from salivary glands, as seen with light microscopy, varied from compact, densely-staining, small colonies to larger ones in which individual organisms were apparent. With electron microscopy, most organisms in salivary glands were reticulated and appeared to be dividing by binary fission. In both types of host cells, colonies often contained a dense inclusion to which reticulated organisms were adhered.  相似文献

Two dogs were examined for hypersialism associated with non-painful, symmetrical enlargement of both mandibular salivary glands. These signs were accompanied by inappetence and weight loss. The underlying cause of the problem could not be determined despite extensive investigations including fine needle aspiration biopsy of affected salivary glands. Hypersialism and mandibular salivary gland enlargement resolved completely during pheno-barbitone administration.  相似文献

On each day of feeding on susceptible calves, salivary glands obtained from groups of adult ticks that transmitted Anaplasma marginale were examined for A marginale colonies by use of light microscopy and transmission electron microscopy. On day 8 of feeding, salivary glands were examined, using fluorescein-labeled antibody and methyl green-pyronine stain. Use of fluorescein-labeled antibody consistently revealed small numbers of fluorescent foci in salivary gland acinar cells obtained from ticks that had fed for 8 days. Colonies of A marginale were seen by transmission electron microscopy only in salivary gland acini of male ticks; these colonies could not be identified, using light microscopy, in companion 1-micron plastic sections stained with Mallory stain. Methyl green-pyronine stain, used commonly to detect theilerial parasites in tick salivary glands, did not differentiate A marginale from cytoplasmic inclusions normally found in salivary gland acinar cells.  相似文献

Salivary glands from males of 3 Dermacentor species (D andersoni, D variabilis and D occidentalis) that were infected with either the Virginia or Idaho isolate of Anaplasma marginale as nymphs or adults were examined for colonies of A marginale by use of light and electron microscopy. Prior to dissection of salivary glands, exposed ticks were held at 25 C for 15 to 18 days, followed by a 3-day incubation at 37 C. Ticks of 2 species transmitted A marginale to calves; the third tick species was confirmed infected by demonstration of typical colonies in tick gut cells, but transmission was not attempted; Colonies of A marginale were seen with light microscopy in salivary glands of all 3 species of ticks; they were located in acinar cells that contained simple granules. Colonies varied morphologically from small, compact ones to larger structures that contained distinct organisms and often were adjacent to the host cell nucleus. Electron microscopy confirmed that the colonies were rickettsial organisms. Morphologic features of A marginale varied and included reticulated forms, forms with electron-dense centers, and small particles; these various forms were similar to those described previously in midgut epithelial cells of ticks. We believe that the organism seen within tick salivary glands may replicate in the glands before its transmission to the vertebrate host.  相似文献

Groups of striped skunks (Mephitis mephitis) were inoculated intramuscularly with graded doses of street rabies virus. At various intervals after inoculation, saliva and sera were tested for rabies virus and neutralizing antibodies, respectively. Skunks that developed rabies were killed in terminal stages of the disease and the following examinations were made: titers of virus and antibody in submandibular salivary glands and brain, extent of immunofluorescence in submandibular salivary glands, and histologic examination of various tissues.

Skunks that received inocula containing 4 × 104 to 4 × 105 mouse intracerebral lethal dose50 (MICLD50) had detectable serum neutralizing antibodies by 7–12 days postinoculation; however, most of the skunks that received lower doses (40 to 4 × 103 MICLD50) did not have detectable serum neutralizing antibodies until clinical signs began. In the salivary glands, slight and extensive immunofluorescence corresponded to high and low titers of tissue neutralizing antibody. Also low viral titers were associated with high tissue neutralizing antibody titers. There was a close correlation between viral titers in right and left submandibular salivary glands.

The results suggest that the immune response can impede the process of infection of the salivary glands resulting in lack of antigen or low amounts of antigen in this tissue. This could occur through interference with centrifugal neural transport of virus and/or neutralization of virus during transfer from neural elements to epithelial cells. Lack of infectious virus or low viral titers in salivary glands containing antigen and high levels of tissue neutralizing antibodies can be caused partly by postmortem virus neutralization (during viral titration).  相似文献

To document computed tomographic topography of salivary glands and their ducts in dogs, a retrograde filling with methylcellulose and iodinated contrast medium was performed in three cadavers. Demarcation of the parotid, mandibular and zygomatic glands was achieved. Surrounding structures were imaged without beam hardening artefacts. Landmarks for the parotid, mandibular and zygomatic glands were the external acoustic canal, the mandibular angle and the pterygopalatine fossa, respectively. Sialograms of the parotid, mandibular and zygomatic ducts were achieved, whereas neither the sublingual glands nor their ducts could be contrasted. The images provide a three-dimensional visualization of the salivary glands and their ducts.  相似文献

Generally titers were high in the submandibular, moderate in the parotid and low to moderate in the zygomatic, molar and sublingual salivary glands. 为了解莱姆病螺旋体在蜱体内的发育生物学,采用直接免疫荧光试验、银染色法组织学及电子显微镜观察螺旋体,结果显示,感染莱姆病螺旋体的饥饿蓖子硬蜱雌虫未吸血与吸血0.5和1天唾腺中无螺旋体。在吸血开始后2天出现唾腺的轻度感染,3天出现唾腺的中度感染,4天和5天出现重度感染。这些结果表明,莱姆病螺旋体媒介蜱唾腺的感染程度随吸血时间的延长而迅速增高,并可在缓慢吸血期的中后期形成重度感染。莱姆病螺旋体在吸血期媒介唾腺内的大量存在,特别是重度感染的发现,为该病原螺旋体由蟀向脊椎动物宿主传播的唾液分泌途径假设提供了有力证据。本研究对莱姆病螺旋体在吸血蟀唾腺内分裂增殖的可能性进行了讨论。  相似文献

99mTc-pertechnetate is excreted in humans by the thyroid glands, gastric mucosa, salivary glands, choroid plexus, and sweat glands. Uptake attributed to the zygomatic and molar salivary glands is used commonly as a reference to assess thyroid uptake and differentiate euthyroid from hyperthyroid cats. However, the exact location and origin of uptake of 99mTc-pertechnetate in the head during thyroid scintigraphy in cats remains uncertain. The purpose of this study was to localize uptake of 99mTc-pertechnetate in the head of the cat using multimodality image fusion. Computed tomography (CT), magnetic resonance (MR), and single photon emission tomography (SPECT) imaging were performed successively in two cats during the same anesthesia procedure. Transverse, dorsal, and sagittal images were reconstructed for each modality. Images were rescaled and fused manually. The anatomic location of focal 99mTc activity in SPECT images was identified in CT and MR images. Four major and four minor focal areas of uptakes were identified in the head in both cats. A rostral conical-shaped activity was identified in the nasal cavity. Two symmetric focal areas of uptakes seen in the soft tissues in the ventro-caudal retro-bulbar region, and rostro-medial to the vertical ramus of the mandible were attributed to zygomatic salivary glands. A central focal activity located ventral and caudal to the zygomatic uptake was located in the nasopharynx and soft palate. Minor symmetric areas of uptake identified in the retromandibular region were attributed to parotid and mandibular salivary glands. Minor symmetric areas of uptake identified in the region of the mandible were attributed to molar salivary glands. No focal area of uptake was identified in the brain.  相似文献

Two different, computer-based, image analysis methods were employed to complement subjective assessment of patterns of mucin staining (by periodic acid Schiff/alcian blue, aldehyde fuchsin/alcian blue and potassium hydroxide-alcian blue/phenylhydrazine hydrocholoride) in digitised images of sections of major and minor salivary glands from cats and dogs. Image analysis based on red, green and blue (RGB) staining was not suitable for quantitation of histochemical staining of mucin in salivary glands. Image analysis based on hue, saturation and lightness (HSL) allowed quantitative assessment of staining by different stain components and of mixed staining, and enabled comparison of staining of different glands in dogs and cats. Quantitative analysis based on HSL allowed differentiation of differences in staining patterns of major and minor cat and dog salivary glands, and between the species; such differences would have been impossible to distinguish on subjective grounds alone. Quantitative assessment of normal salivary gland histochemistry allows comparison with staining patterns in disease.  相似文献

The anatomy of ovine salivary glands was studied on cadaver heads. The mandibular duct enters the oral cavity on the ventral surface of sublingual caruncles, which are located medial to the orifice of the ventral sublingual gland duct. The parotid gland duct enters the oral cavity on the cheek opposite the upper 2nd molar. Prior to applying sialography to live animals, the procedure was carried out on cadaver heads then the live animals were sedated, the mandibular and parotid ducts catheterized and contrast medium was injected into each gland. Lateral radiographs were made immediately after the injection. The normal sheep mandibular and parotid salivary glands have a multilobular appearance in cadaver heads, but in live animal only the ducts and their smaller branches could be identified. The mean diameter of mandibular and parotid duct were 1.4+/-0.3 mm and 3. 1+/-1.0 mm respectively. The monostomatic sublingular gland had a slender shape in the sialogram. In conclusion sialography of mandibular, parotid and sublingual salivary glands in sheep is practical and can be helpful in diagnosis of pathological conditions of these glands.  相似文献

The major salivary glands (parotid glands, monostomatic sublingual glands and submandibular glands) were obtained from hoary bamboo rats (Rhizomys purinosus) and fixed in Bouin's solution. Paraffin sections were subjected to a battery of staining methods including lectin staining for demonstration of complex carbohydrates. Among the three major salivary glands, unique histochemical features were observed in the submandibular gland. Different from most myomorpha species, submandibular glands of the hoary bamboo rats have two types of secretory cells in the secretory endpieces. One type of cells showed positive reactions with Alcian blue (AB)(pH2.5), periodic acid-Schiff (PAS) and some lectins (peanuts agglutinin, Griffonia simplicifolia I. Machura pomifera agglutinin). The granular ducts, which exist in animals belonging to suborder myomorpha, were not observed in the submandibular glands of this animal.  相似文献

Salivary gland infarction was found in two adult dogs. The main changes were ischaemic necrosis, capsular fibrosis and regenerative hyperplasia of surviving ductal epithelium. Necrosis of arterial tunica media and thrombosis were found only in the infarcted parts of the salivary glands. The lesions appeared to be confined to the salivary glands; no cause of the infarction was found.  相似文献
