To mitigate the acidification problem in surface waters the Swedish government is funding a liming programme. Limestone or dolomite powder has been applied to acidified waters since 1976 and on a large scale since 1982. In most projects, limestone is applied directly to the lake, but in several cases supplementary liming is carried out on wetlands and in streams using dosers or other techniques. At present 7,500 Swedish lakes and more than 11,000 kilometers of streams are limed repeatedly with a total of some 200,000 tonne of limestone every year. In 1994 about US$ 25 million was invested by the Swedish government in the liming programme. The biological objective of the liming operations is to detoxify the water so that the natural fauna and flora can survive or recolonize. The chemical aim is to raise the pH above 6.0 and the alkalinity above 0.1 meq/l, which gives an acceptable buffering capacity. In addition, dissolved metals will be deposited after liming, thus reducing their toxicity. Overdosing must be avoided, with natural softwater characteristics being the objective. The chemical and biological effects in water of the liming operations are encouraging. The Swedish liming programme has so far resulted in restoration in 80–90% of the limed surface waters. The fauna often shows an initial dominance by a few species but diversity increases with time, In general, flora and fauna in limed waters show a great resemblance to those in waters not acidified. From 1977 to 1982, liming of acidified waters was performed for a trial period using governmental subsidies. Based on the experience gained, an operational liming program was started in 1982 by the National Environmental Protection Board of Sweden. All waters with pH of less than 6 and/or an alkalinity of less than 0.05 meq L?1 have been eligible for subsidies. Individual water owners as well as organizations and federal agencies may apply for subsidies. Normally 85% of the costs are covered by government grants. Each county administration draws up a 5 yr liming plan and applies yearly for subsidies on a county basis. Since 1977, SEK (Swedish Kroner) 373 million have been spent on liming operations and SEK 33 million on administration and follow-up studies. A yearly budget of about SEK 110 to 130 million has been proposed for 1988 to 1991. The liming agent used has been powdered CaCO3 with a particle size normally of 0 to 0.2 mm. At present, about 4,000 lakes have been treated. The results of the treatments are normally evaluated by analyzing water samples taken twice a year. These are analyzed for pH, alkalinity, conductivity, color, Ca and Mg. In addition, biological surveys are carried out in selected lakes and streams.  相似文献

This paper presents a methodology for assessing the benefits and costs of liming acidified waters. Public decision makers generally have to choose among a variety of projects for public investment. Benefit-cost analysis offers one set of tools to assist the decision maker. This paper provides the benefit-cost tool to the decision maker to allow him or her to understand whether a liming project is justified from an economics perspective. The rudiments of benefit-cost analysis are first derived with particular attention paid to issues such as accounting stance, discounting, non-market benefit estimation and computation of applicable economic costs. The paper also provides detailed information on the costs associated with liming acidified waters and the appropriate methods by which benefits are to be computed. A hypothetical examples is provided to assist the reader in understanding the application of benefit-cost analysis to liming projects. Available data sources for future analyses are described for seven states and the federal government.  相似文献

The circumstances under which catchment liming is an advisable economic alternative to direct water liming are described, as are research and operational experiences of catchment liming, drawing mainly on the Loch Fleet Project results and other European data. The arguments for and against catchment liming as a means of restoring acidified aquatic habitat are presented. In general, it is concluded that there are conditions, such as lakes with short retention times and/or where stream spawning fish species are involved, where catchment liming is a sensible option.  相似文献

The dissolution efficiency for different stream liming methods is shown to depend upon the following parameters: Particle size distribution; Initial pH-value; Dose intensity; and Degree of wet slurrying. The particle size distribution and the degree of wet slurrying are the only free variables and when they are determined, the others are determined by the conditions at the dosing site. The way to influence the dissolution efficiency, and accordingly the cost of neutralization, will be to vary the particle size distribution of the powder used for dosing. A research watershed liming project is being carried out at Loch Fleet in the Galloway District of southwest Scotland. This acid loch originally supported a brown trout fishery, but the number of fish caught by anglers declined during the 1950's and the fishery eventually disappeared about 20 yr ago. After 2 yr of pretreatment data collection, the first set of land time applications took place in the spring of 1986, and the resulting surface water chemical changes are very encouraging. Increases in pH and Ca concentration and decreases in A1 (especially the toxic labile monomeric fraction) concentrations have been observed in the streams and waters draining the treated subcatchments in the loch itself and in the loch outlet. Also, the normal trend for pH and Ca concentration to fall during periods of high flow in the main feeder stream has been reversed. In the spring of 1987, the loch was restocked with brown trout. Initial indications are that there has been very good survival of these fish, and that they managed to spawn during the 1987/88 winter. The chemical and biological changes brought about by the land treatments are described in detail.  相似文献

Purpose

This study investigates the effects of surface liming on soil attenuation radiation properties. For this, measurements of soil chemical attributes (pH, organic carbon, H+Al, Al3+, Ca2+, and Mg2+) and attenuation radiation parameters (mass attenuation coefficient, μm, atomic and electronic cross sections, σa and σe, effective atomic number and electron density, Zeff and Nel) were carried out. This aim was motivated by the fact that possible μm variation might cause as well variation in the determination of soil physical properties.

Materials and methods

The studied soil, classified as a Dystrudept sity-clay, is located in South Brazil. The trial consisted of five stripes, one of them under pasture and the remaining under no-till system (NTS). Lime rates of 0, 10, 15, and 20 t ha?1 were broadcast on the NTS soil surface. Disturbed soil samples were collected 30 months after liming at the top (0–10 cm) and subsoil (10–20 cm) layers. Soil chemical attributes were characterized following standard experimental procedures. The soil oxide composition, obtained by EDXRF analysis, was used to calculate μm for 241Am and 137Cs photon energies with XCOM computer code. μm values were employed to calculate σa, σe, Zeff, and Nel and to predict variations in soil bulk density (ρ) and total porosity (φ).

Results and discussion

Surface liming notably increased contents of soil pH, Ca2+, and Mg2+ while reduced H+Al and Al3+ at the top soil layer, where μm, σa, σe, and Zeff were also increased with the lime rates. However, at the subsoil layer, liming neither lessened soil acidity nor induced remarkable changes in the attenuation parameters. When using 137Cs photon energy, incoherent scattering totally dominated over the radiation interaction processes whereas photoelectric absorption and coherent scattering substantially contributed when 241Am photon energy was used. Therefore, the increasing in soil attenuation parameters at the top soil layer was more accentuated considering 241Am than 137Cs photon energy. Variation in μm caused considerable variation in ρ and φ only for 241Am photon energy.

Conclusions

The findings regarding the effect of μm variation induced by liming on the determination of soil physical properties are extremely relevant because traditionally, in the soil science area, μm values are calculated without considering any chemical modification to which the soil can be submitted. Bearing in mind that ρ and φ are important parameters from the agricultural and environmental points of view, not representative measurements of μm can lead to biased values of ρ and φ.

It is suggested that stopping liming on agricultural land could lead to a potential chemical time bomb (CTB). the sequence of interrelated events leading to the CTB include the end of liming, perhaps caused by a change in land use, a progressive decrease in soil pH and increased solubility of potentially toxic contaminants that accumulate in soils as a result of agricultural practices. Data are presented on rates of long-term soil acidification and modelled changes in the solubility of some trace metals in soil as a result of acidification. Soil acidification rates depend primarily on acid input rates and the soil's acid neutralizing capacity, possibly limited by neutralization kinetics. Experimental data illustrating this point show that the pH decreased rapidly in a field soil receiving ammonium rather than nitrate fertilizer treatment. on a limed agricultural field that was later abandoned and converted to deciduous woodland, The pH of the 0-23 cm soil layers decreased over 100 years from pH 7 to 4.2. Deeper layers acidified at a slower rate. Thermodynamic model calculations simulating the solubilities of metals in a sandy topsoil showed zinc, cadmium and aluminium solubilities increasing exponentially with decreasing pH, resulting in several-fold solubility increases between pH 5 and 4. These results suggest how metal solubility increases after liming stops. the model pH-solubility relationships depended on the type of metal, The solid phase controlling the solubility, and the amount of metal in the soil if adsorption controlled the solubility. Decreasing pH and the resultant increase in metal solubility expected on abandoned farmland might be managed through techniques such as liming or planting forests of selected tree species.  相似文献

The effects of lime treatment on crayfish (Astacus astacus and Pacifastacus leniusculus) populations in 17 lakes and fish populations in 47 lakes and 7 rivers within the trial period 1976–82 have been evaluated. An increase in the catch of crayfish per unit effort was observed in 7 lakes, although significantly in one lake only. The varying results in the other lakes indicate that factors other than pH may be of greater importance for the development of crayfish populations after liming. Recruitment of fish improved in waters where liming resulted in pH >5.5. In lakes with pH <5.5 before and pH >5.5 after treatment, there was a significant increase in the number of fish caught, from 12 to 34 per unit effort. Due to improved recruitment the individual average weight was smaller and hence the catch in weight per unit effort was about the same as before liming. After lime treatment in streams which resulted in a stable pH of >5.5, the abundance of juvenile salmonids increased to numbers found in non-acidified streams. In other streams acid spates reduced the positive influence of liming on the abundance of juvenile salmonids.  相似文献

Long range transport of H2SO4 has caused many Nova Scotian rivers to decline in pH to the point where their Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) stocks have been destroyed or much diminished. Chemical records show a declining pH trend in N.S. rivers since the early 1950's. The annual variation in hydrogen ion activity is positively correlated with sulphate and Al and negatively correlated with organic anions. It is technically feasible to restore the acidified salmon habitat by the addition of limestone, and the total cost of mounting a liming program to restore the lost habitat has been calculated. The pre-acidification Atlantic salmon production capacity was estimated from physical habitat surveys and tag return data. The estimated costs of the liming program are much greater than the anticipated economic benefits of the salmon restoration. Present plans are for a small liming program to establish a series of refuges for the preservation of nuclei of native salmon stocks.  相似文献

The sorption of phosphate (P) by four strongly acid Fijian soils from 0.01 M CaCl2 decreased with increasing pH up to pH 5.5–6.0 and then increased again. The initial decrease in P sorption with increasing pH appears to result from an interaction between added P, negative charge, and the electrostatic potential in the plane of sorption. The results of a sorption study, involving KCl or CaCl2 of varying concentrations as the background electrolyte and using Nadroloulou soil incubated with KOH or Ca(OH)2, suggested that the increase in P sorption at pH values > 6.0 was caused by the formation of insoluble Ca-P compounds. For some soils this is consistent with the results of an isotopic-exchange study in which incubation with lime caused marked reductions in the amounts of exchangeable P at high pH.  相似文献

The Lake Fjorda water system in southern Norway consists of several lakes which exhibit a gradient in acidification. The system is inhabited by populations of brown trout, Arctic char, whitefish, perch, European minnows and Crucian carp. Populations of Arctic char, whitefish and brown trout were nearly wiped out in some of the locations, as a result of acidification, In 1985, Lake Fjorda was limed in order to improve water quality so the fish community would be recovered. Fish stock assessment by means of gill-net fishing in the epibenthic and pelagic zones was carried out before (1983) and three years after liming (1991–1993). Populations of Arctic char and whitefish have not recovered after eight years of liming. Brown trout are almost extinct and do not seem to be recovering. Perch were less affected by acidification, exhibiting good recruitment also before liming.  相似文献

Carbonatite rock powder, originating from the Lillebukt Alkaline Complex at Stjernøy in northern Norway, can potentially be used as a slow‐releasing lime and potassium (K) and magnesium (Mg) fertilizer due to a high concentration of the easily weathered minerals calcite (42%) and biotite (30%). However, the enrichment of barium (Ba) and strontium (Sr) may cause an undesired uptake to plants when carbonatite is applied to agroecosystems. A pot experiment was designed to investigate the liming and fertilization effects of carbonatite and the potential mobilization of Ba and Sr compared to a dolomite lime commonly used in Norwegian agriculture. These liming agents were mixed with a sandy soil applied to different amounts of peat, and the uptake of Ba, Sr, calcium (Ca), Mg, and K by Festuca arundinácea Schreb. Kora (tall fescue) and Trifolium repens L. Milkanova (white clover) was evaluated. The liming agents were generally incapable of buffering the acidifying effect from increased applications of peat, while the plant dry mass was unaffected. Compared to pots given dolomite and soluble K, the availability of K from carbonatite to plants was equally high or higher, and no difference in the K:(Ca + Mg) ratio in plants was observed. Carbonatite was a significant source to plant Ba and Sr, and the uptake seemed to follow the Ca uptake. Addition of peat amplified the uptake of Ba, Sr, Ca, Mg, and K to plants, probably an effect of organic acid‐induced weathering of carbonatite. White clover took up Ba, Sr, and Ca more effectively than tall fescue, but the Ba and Sr concentrations in plants were relatively moderate compared to concentrations reported from field investigations.  相似文献

Although Israel plans to remain self-sufficient in freshwater, that goal comes at a high cost. Both Israel and its neighbors would be better off if countries with an abundance of freshwater exported some of that resource to Israel, which would in turn share it with Palestine and Jordan. A simple 2×2×1 variant of the Heckscher-Ohlin-Samuelson model, incorporating costs of transport, illustrates the advantages of international trade in freshwater. Not only does trade foster an efficient allocation of a scarce resource across countries, but also, by establishing a highly visible market price for importing water, promotes its efficient allocation among competing uses within countries. The classic marginal conditions for efficient allocation of water across and within countries, that the present model derives, are applied to empirical data that illustrate how much more efficiently water can be utilized in the Middle East. Given the long and tragic background of strife and distrust in that part of the world, it is a hopeful development that Turkey is now shipping freshwater to Cyprus and is in talks with Israel to extend this trade to that country. There is also the potential for Egypt and Lebanon to profitably export water to Israel. Such trade will not only promote prosperity but, conceivably, can also reduce conflict and deter war in the region.  相似文献

Results are reported from the investigations of fine-root development in Norway spruce and Scots pine stands in South and Central Sweden, subjected to different liming and fertilization regimes. The growth responses of the fine roots to varying mineral nutrient regimes seem to be dependent on the tree species, the age of the tree population and soil conditions. Nitrogen fertilization in some of the investigated stands had negative effects on the development of fine roots, resulting in a reduction in the amount of fine roots to about 50% of that in the control. However, negative effects were not consistent in all stands, positive growth responses were also obtained. In these stands, the amount of fine roots was increased by 2 to 3 times. Liming in combination with fertilization resulted in a strong decrease in the amount of fine roots to about 30% of that in the control in some of the investigated stands. Liming in high doses is expected to produce a persistent increase in pH (H2O and base saturation in the soil. However, results from the present study suggest that liming may have a negative effect on the development of tree fine roots, particularly in areas with a high N deposition. The application of crushed dolomite had less negative effects on fine root development than crushed calcitric lime and different types of residue products, such as wood and peat ashes.  相似文献

Studies of benthic animal communities in three limed Norwegian rivers showed different progress in the recovery response of sensitive animals. In River Vikedal highly sensitive species established populations in the limed part of the river after a few months. The response was slower in River Audna. Longer distances to parental populations was probably the main reason for this. The benthic community of the main River Ogna was unstable, while continuous liming of a highly acidified tributary did not result in improvement of the fauna. In River Vikedal, the bivoltine mayfly Baetis rhodani was more numerous in the autumn samples indicating critical water quality during spring. An adjustment of the pH of the limed water resulted in an increase of this species. The relative abundance of sensitive animals increased downstreams from the point of liming. This may partly be explained by clogging of powdered limestone in the areas closest to the lime doser. A better and more stable water chemistry in the downstream reaches is probably also important. Contrary, the suspended lime did not influence the abundance of filter-feeders.  相似文献

The effect of liming and earthworms on the composition and function of soil microbial communities was investigated in an upland soil from the UK in order to understand interactions between the biotic and abiotic components of soil systems. A factorial experiment was established using soils from the Sourhope Farm, near Kelso, with lime or no lime added, with or without earthworms added and a combined treatment of both lime and earthworm additions. The soils were incubated and destructively sampled after 180 days. Measurements of soil microbial biomass, dehydrogenase activity, phenotypic structure (by phospholipid fatty acid analysis (PLFA) and responses to four carbon substrates (d-glucose, l-arginine, α-ketoglutaric acid, α-cyclodextrin) were determined. Statistically significant results were limited to the litter layers, with no significant observations in either the H or Ah horizons. There were significant decreases in the soil microbial biomass and microbial activity in the litter layers caused by the addition of earthworms; liming reduced microbial biomass only. The addition of earthworms caused a significant difference in the PLFA principle component analysis (PCA) profile, as did liming. For the PLFA PCA profile, earthworm plus lime treatment was indistinguishable from the liming result. Addition of earthworms significantly suppressed the response to glucose; this effect was removed by liming. This indicates that liming may significantly alter the ecological interactions between earthworms and the microbial community.  相似文献

The availability of soil Mn to corn in relation to extractability of soil Mn by EDTA, Mg(NO3)2, CH3COONH4, hydroquinone, H3PO4, and NH4H2PO4 as affected by liming was evaluated under field conditions on a single soil type. EDTA, Mg(NO3)2 and CH3COONH4‐extractable Mn were related inversely to available Mn. No useful relationships were found between hydroquinone, H3PO4, and NH4H2PO4‐extractable soil Mn and Mn uptake by sweet corn.  相似文献
