Bone healing associated with 3 techniques of midshaft femoral fracture fixation in 36 young adult Beagle-type dogs was evaluated in radiographic and gross pathoanatomic studies. A serrated transverse fracture was surgically and aseptically created on the midshaft of either the left or the right femur of each dog. The fixation devices used were intramedullary (IM) pin, IM pin and 1/2 Kirschner device, and tension bone plates. The radiographic evaluation was done in series. The first radiographs were taken during surgery. Radiographs were then taken immediately after surgery, to record the status of reduction, alignment, and fixation. Radiographs were taken at the 4th and 10th postoperative weeks, to monitor healing. All dogs were euthanatized at the 10th week. Both the normal femur and the healing femur were removed from all dogs, all soft tissue was removed from the bone, and each femur was examined grossly. Each type of fixation was associated with a distinct mode of osteogenesis. Bony union and clinical union (that stage in the healing process when fixation can be removed) were defined as a successful conclusion to each case. Malunion and nonunion were defined as unsuccessful conclusions. Delayed union was defined as neither successful nor unsuccessful. The IM pin cases had a 64.2% success rate and a 14.2% failure rate. The IM pin and 1/2 Kirschner cases had a 100% success rate. The bone plate cases were 91% successful, with 0% failure. A problem identified with IM pinning was axial rotation (6 of 14 or 42% of the cases). It was concluded that IM pins should not be used alone for the fixation of femoral fractures in adult dogs.

Fracture of the tibial tarsal bone was encountered in two dogs. In one case, coaptation in flexion resulted in joint stiffness and persistent lameness. In the other, open reduction and transverse pinning of each fragment to the adjacent fibular tarsal bone was followed by uncomplicated healing and normal function of the tarsus.

This report presents the case of a 21-year-old Warmblood mare referred to the clinic with neurological dysfunctions and considerable signs of discomfort. A fracture of the caudal vertebral body of C2 with a very unusual radiographic appearance was diagnosed, and the mare was euthanized due to deterioration in neurological status. Histology revealed no evidence of neoplasia or pathological fracture.

Adequate radiographic evaluation of the horse relevant to purchase examination requires the successful integration of technique, interpretation, and reporting. A thorough knowledge of lameness and disease can be masked by incorrect interpretation resulting from poor-quality films or an incomplete examination. Thus, care must be taken to produce an adequate number of high-quality films on which to base a report, which allows you to describe changes that are present. This information, coupled with your physical examination, other laboratory data, and the knowledge of the expressed use of the horse will allow you to advise prospective owners on the decision that they will ultimately make.

An 8-year-old Labrador Retriever developed unilateral exophthalmos over a 1-year period. Contrast radiography, surgical exploration, and histologic examination revealed the cause to be an adenocarcinoma arising from the zygomatic salivary gland or duct.

Radiologic study of the canine urethra
The structure and function of the canine urethra were studied during retrograde and voiding urethrography in 9 male and 8 female dogs. The lumen of the prostatic portion of the urethra was variable in diameter. During retrograde urethrography, the lumen was narrow with streaks of contrast medium outlining mucosal folds, but during voiding, it was dilated and a spindle-shaped seminal hillock was detected. Retrograde urethrography revealed other regions of the urethra of males and females had a smooth radiographic outline. During voiding urethrography, characteristic identical urethral contractions were observed in the caudal portion of the pelvic urethra (male) and in the caudal half of the urethra (female). Contractions were progressive, occurred where striated muscle was present in the urethral wall, and resulted in an intermittent flow of urine from the urethra. In the male, contractions had a rate of 2.02 +/- 0.23 contraction/s and 1.65 +/- 0.53 in the females. Contractions may have a role in the controlled voiding of small volumes of urine necessary for the repeated marking of territory, in the passage of the ejaculate along the male urethra during copulation, and in the clearance of any residual urine from the urethra at the completion of micturition.

A novel case of a canine odontogenic parakeratinized cyst (COPC) that resulted in exophthalmos and palatine, maxillary, and zygomatic bone erosion in a 5‐year‐old Chihuahua dog is reported. Final diagnosis was aided by cross‐sectional imaging (magnetic resonance imaging and computed tomography) and confirmed with histologic examination of the cyst wall.

Damage to the subchondral bone has been associated with a number of orthopaedic diseases. Diagnostic imaging is, therefore, critical in identifying disease and damage of the subchondral bone, not only for the diagnosis of joint and subchondral bone disease causing lameness, but also for identifying early/pre-symptomatic damage. The aims of this Critically Appraised Topic (CAT) were to assess the published evidence for the use of advanced imaging techniques (magnetic resonance imaging [MRI] and computed tomography [CT]) in the diagnosis of subchondral bone disease in the distal limb joints (metacarpo/metatarsophalangeal and interphalangeal joints) of the adult horse, and to compare the diagnostic value of these techniques with radiography. In the studies reviewed in this CAT, advanced imaging modalities (MRI and CT) were superior to routine radiography for the diagnosis of subchondral bone injury of the distal limb joints. In a small percentage of horses, post-MRI reevaluation of the initial radiographs or acquiring further lesion-orientated radiographs allowed the identification of the subchondral bone injury. Extended radiographic examinations, including non-standard views, might increase the sensitivity of radiography to detect subchondral bone injuries, however, currently CT and MRI may be considered the “gold standard” imaging modalities. More studies comparing the identification of subchondral bone lesions on imaging and by histopathological/gross examination would be useful to assess more precisely the sensitivity and specificity of the different modalities.
