Plasma glucose and serum insulin, thyroxine, and triiodothyronine concentrations were monitored in 6 weanling Thoroughbreds after direct gastric infusion of solutions containing sucrose or casein. Neither plasma glucose nor serum hormone concentrations were affected by infusions of water or by infusions of 326 or 424 g of casein/250 kg of body weight. However, glucose and hormone concentrations increased significantly (P less than 0.001) after infusions of 649 or 844 g of sucrose/250 kg. Initial rates of increase were more rapid and increases were subsequently reversed more rapidly when 844 g of sucrose/250 kg was infused than when 649 g of sucrose/250 kg was infused. Soluble carbohydrate in the digestive tract triggered specific responses in the serum thyroid hormone concentrations of weanling horses. Magnitudes and durations of these responses appeared to depend on the amount of carbohydrate present. 相似文献

Twenty-four Angus X Hereford steers (155 +/- 4 kg) were used to examine thyroid function during exposure to ambient temperatures of 4, 18 and 32 C. Jugular cannulae were inserted after steers were acclimated to individual stalls in environmentally controlled chambers at 18 C for 3 d. The day following cannulation, ambient temperatures were changed 2 C/h for 7 h and serum samples were collected hourly. After steers were exposed to either 4, 18 or 32 C for 1 and 72 h, thyrotropin releasing hormone (TRH; 50 micrograms, iv) was rapidly infused. Serum samples were collected hourly for 8 h after each treatment with TRH and every 8 h for 3 d between treatments. Rectal temperatures and respiratory were greater (P less than .05) in steers exposed to 32 C compared with steers at 4 C. During the change in environmental temperature, the concentrations of thyroxine (T4) and triiodothyronine (T3) over time tended (P less than .10) to decrease in steers exposed to 32 C compared with those at 4 C. Concentrations of T4 and T3 after the second treatment with TRH were significantly less in steers exposed to 32 C compared with those at 4 C. The response of T4 to TRH was reduced (P less than .01) after the second treatment with TRH compared with the first for steers exposed to all three temperatures, whereas, the response of T3 was reduced (P less than .05) after the second treatment with TRH only in steers exposed to 32 C.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS) 相似文献

In an effort to evaluate the effect of pyoderma on circulating iodothyronines, plasma triiodothyronine (T3) and thyroxine (T4) values were determined before and after thyroid stimulating hormone administration in 25 dogs with pyoderma and in 15 controls. Basal T4 values were increased in dogs with pyoderma, but neither stimulated T4 nor T3 values were altered by this condition. On the basis of low values for circulating iodothyronines, hypothyroidism was suspected in 3 dogs in the pyoderma group. The dog with the most involved lesions had extremely low T3 and T4 values as well as an autoimmune disease. It was concluded that most dogs with pyoderma do not have thyroid dysfunction. 相似文献

Twenty-four steers initially averaging 221 kg BW were used to evaluate the effects of lysocellin and calcium (Ca) level on performance and ruminal and plasma characteristics. Lysocellin at 0 or 22 mg/kg of diet and Ca at .3 or .6% were fed in a 2 X 2 factorial arrangement of treatments. Steers in individual pens had ad libitum access to a diet consisting of 80% corn silage and 20% (DM basis) of a protein, mineral and vitamin supplement. Ruminal fluid and blood samples were collected on d 42 and 85 of the 113-d trial. Steers fed the .6% Ca diet gained faster and required less feed/unit of gain than those fed the .3% Ca diet (P less than .05). There was a tendency for a lysocellin X Ca interaction for gain and feed efficiency (P less than .10). Lysocellin tended to depress performance when fed with .3% Ca, but it tended to improve gain and feed efficiency when fed with .6% Ca. Molar proportions of propionate were higher and those of acetate were lower (P less than .01) for steers fed lysocellin. Ruminal-soluble Zn, Fe and Cu levels were higher (P less than .01) in steers fed lysocellin. Ruminal-soluble Ca (P less than .01) was higher and ruminal-soluble P and Na were lower (P less than .01) in steers fed .6% Ca. Plasma K was higher (P less than .05) in steers fed .6% Ca but it was lower (P less than .05) in steers fed lysocellin. Results of this study indicate that dietary Ca affects certain metabolic responses to lysocellin in growing cattle. 相似文献

Two Brown Swiss and two Holstein steers, average weight of 226 kg, were fasted 8 d. Two days before the fast, jugular vein catheters were installed. Blood samples were collected every 15 min from 0800 to 1400 h on d 0, 2, 5 and 8 of fasting. Plasma from each sample was analyzed for concentrations of growth hormone, and from selected samples for insulin, glucagon, glucose, beta-hydroxybutyrate, free fatty acids, urea N and glycerol. Both growth hormone and insulin concentrations decreased by d 2 of the fast and remained at that concentration. Glucagon, however, remained constant. From d 0 to 2, concentrations of beta-hydroxybutyrate, free fatty acids and glycerol increased but then changed little for d 5 and 8. From d 0 to 2, glucose decreased and urea N increased. In contrast to the other metabolites, glucose and urea N concentrations stabilized between 3 and 5 d of fasting. The ratio of growth hormone to insulin decreased threefold and the ratio of glucagon to insulin decreased fivefold from d 0 to 2; both ratios remained constant during the rest of the fast. The data indicate that fasting cattle adapt by decreasing concentrations in plasma of growth hormone and insulin but not glucagon. These endocrine changes, therefore, seem responsible for greater rates of free fatty acid mobilization and glucose sparing during an energy deficit. 相似文献

The objective of this study was to determine effects of processing method, dry-rolled (DR) vs steam-flaked (SF), and degree of processing (flake density, FD) of SF sorghum grain on splanchnic (gut and liver) N metabolism by growing steers. Diets contained 77% sorghum grain either DR or SF at densities of 437, 360, and 283 g/L (SF34, SF28, and SF22, respectively). Eight crossbred steers (340 kg initial BW), implanted with indwelling catheters into portal, hepatic, and mesenteric veins and the mesenteric artery, were used in a randomized complete block design. Blood flows and net output or uptake of ammonia N, urea N (UN), and alpha-amino N (AAN) were measured across portal-drained viscera, hepatic, and splanchnic tissues. Plasma arterial, portal, and hepatic concentrations of individual amino acids were also measured. Decreasing FD linearly increased (P = .04) net absorption of AAN (51, 73, and 78 g/d for SF34, SF28, and SF22, respectively) and transfer (cycling) of blood UN to the gut (49, 48 and 64 g/d; P = .02). Net UN cycling averaged 38% of N intake across all diets. Hepatic uptake of AAN or UN synthesis, and splanchnic output of AAN and UN, were not altered by FD. Lowering FD linearly increased (P < or = .02) portal-arterial concentration differences for blood AAN and UN and plasma arterial concentrations for alanine. Steers fed SF compared to DR tended to have greater (P = .11) blood UN cycling (percentage of hepatic synthesis; 64 vs 50%) and decreased (P = .03) net splanchnic UN output (30 vs 50 g/d), but other net fluxes of N were not altered across splanchnic tissues. Steam-flaking compared to dry-rolling tended to decrease (P = .12) portal, but not hepatic, blood flow and increased (P < .01) hepatic-arterial concentration differences for blood UN. Except for a decrease (P = .01) in hepatic-arterial concentration differences of glutamine, plasma amino acid concentrations were not altered by feeding SF vs DR sorghum. Processing method (steam-flaking vs dry-rolling) or increasing the degree of processing (by decreasing FD) of SF sorghum grain resulted in greater transfer of blood UN to the gut. Reducing FD also linearly increased the absorption of AAN by growing steers, which explains (in part) published responses of superior performance by steers fed SF grains. 相似文献

Samples of digesta from the ruminal upper strata (RUS) and feces (F) were taken from four ruminally cannulated steers fed Coastal bermudagrass hay (78% NDF) in the long form to evaluate the effects of feeding level and time postfeeding on particle breakdown. The experimental design was a 4 x 4 Latin square with 18-d periods. Treatments based on previous intakes were set at 50, 70, 90 and 110% (3.1, 4.4, 5.5 and 6.7 kg/d, respectively) of feed consumed per animal and fed at 12-h intervals. Samples were taken at 2, 6 and 12h postfeeding and wet-sieved. Dry matter weight distribution of total recovered particles was used to partition RUS and F digesta among percentages of large (greater than 4.0 mm), medium (greater than 4.0 and less than or equal to 1.0 mm), small (less than 1.0 and greater than or eual to .125 mm) and fine (less than .125 and greater than or equal to .0027 mm) particles. With increasing feeding level, the percentage of medium RUS particles increased linearly (P less than .02), whereas the percentage of fine RUS particles decreased linearly (P less than .01). Increased time postfeeding resulted in a linear decrease in the percentage of large RUS particles (P less than .01), a linear increase in the percentage of small RUS particles (P less than .01) and in a quadratic increase in the percentage of fine RUS particles (P less than .01). Percentage of medium RUS particles remained unchanged. Increasing feeding level resulted in linear increases in mean RUS (P less than .01) and F (P less than .02) particle sizes. Percentages of RUS and F material passing through a 1.0-mm sieve averaged 52.8 and 88.8%, respectively. Animal-to-animal variation in proportions of RUS and mixed reticuloruminal particles was not entirely removed by rumination and was still reflected in the percentages of F particles. Factors such as particle entrapment in the fiber mat, reticular sedimentation, changes in specific gravity, swelling and hydration capacity, reticuloruminal motility and amount of digesta exiting per contraction appear to be more important than particle size reduction in the regulation of the passage of digesta from the reticulorumen. 相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To determine whether nonthyroidal disease of various causes and severity is associated with abnormalities in baseline serum concentrations of total thyroxine (T4), triiodothyronine (T3), free T4, or thyrotropin (thyroid-stimulating hormone [TSH]) in dogs believed to be euthyroid. DESIGN: Case-control study. ANIMALS: 223 dogs with confirmed nonthyroidal diseases and presumptive normal thyroid function, and 150 clinically normal dogs. PROCEDURE: Serum total T4, total T3, free T4, and TSH concentrations were measured in dogs with confirmed nonthyroidal disease. Reference ranges for hormone concentrations were established on the basis of results from 150 clinically normal dogs. RESULTS: In dogs with nonthyroidal disease, median serum concentrations of total T4, total T3, and free T4 were significantly lower than those in clinically normal dogs. Median serum TSH concentration in sick dogs was significantly greater than that of clinically normal dogs. When stratified by severity of disease (ie, mild, moderate, and severe), dogs with severe disease had low serum concentrations of total T4, total T3, or free T4 more commonly than did dogs with mild disease. In contrast, serum TSH concentrations were more likely to remain within the reference range regardless of severity of disease. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Results indicate that serum total T4, free T4, and total T3 concentrations may be low (ie, in the hypothyroid range) in dogs with moderate to severe nonthyroidal disease. Serum TSH concentrations are more likely to remain within the reference range in sick dogs. 相似文献

A feeding trial was conducted with beef breed steers (120) to determine the effects of substituting bread by-product (BBy) for whole shelled corn on performance and meat quality. Chemical analysis of each diet ingredient and in vitro rates of digestion from gas production of BBy and corn were determined to provide accurate information for diet evaluations using the 1996 Beef NRC Model Level 2. Bread by-product contained 16% CP (75.6% degradable) and 75.1% non-structural carbohydrates (70% as starch, which had a digestion rate of 16%/h). The steers were given one estrogenic implant (Synovex-S) and started on the experiment at 15 mo of age and an average weight of 364 kg. The cattle were commercially slaughtered in three groups (40 steers at 101, 60 steers at 126, and 20 steers at 160 d on feed) weighing an average of 553 kg when they reached a small degree of marbling. Carcasses were electrically stimulated to prevent cold shortening of muscles. Warner-Bratzler shear force values were measured in rib steaks at 5, 14, and 21 d after slaughter (n = 76). Rib steaks from 30 steers per treatment were evaluated for palatability traits. Use of BBy at 55% of the diet (substituted for 75% of the corn) significantly improved feed efficiency by 8.1%. There were no statistically significant differences between the two diets for effects on ADG, carcass characteristics, shear force values, or sensory panel ratings of tenderness, juiciness, flavor, or overall acceptability. After adjusting intestinal starch digestibility in Level 2 to 63% for the whole corn and 90% for the BBy, predicted ADG matched that observed. Apparent NE(g) values for BBy and corn were 1.57 and 1.41 Mcal/kg, respectively. 相似文献

In vivo temporal changes in ruminal liquid flow, liquid volume and VFA concentrations were determined in growing steers following once-daily feeding. Crossbred beef steers (n = 8; 278 +/- 8 kg), used in a crossover design, were trained to consume 180% of their maintenance energy intake within 2 h of either a high-forage (54% hay: 46% concentrate; HF) or high-concentrate (28% hay: 72% concentrate; HC) diet. For each animal on each diet, ruminal VFA concentrations, liquid volumes and liquid dilution rates were determined during a 2-h period before feeding and during three consecutive 2-h periods following feeding. Water was withheld during these periods to observe physiologically rather than behaviorally induced changes. At equal energy intakes, diet alone had no effect on VFA concentrations (P greater than .10), although changes in total VFA, acetic and isobutyric acids differed during the time periods following feeding due to diet (diet x time period interaction; P less than or equal to .10). Ruminal volume and dilution rate were altered in a reciprocal manner due to diet, with greater volumes and lower dilution rates observed in HC than in HF steers. Differences among time periods were observed for dilution rate and propionic acid concentrations. In general, these differences can be explained by comparison of the prefeeding time period with the postfeeding time periods. A numerical, but not statistically significant, increase in ruminal volume was observed following feeding. The effects of diet on volume and liquid dilution rate of the rumen must be considered when assessing total nutrients available for animal absorption. 相似文献

We investigated the influence of DM and(or) energy intake and dietary CP levels on the performance and nitrogen (N) retention of beef steers with and without growth promoter implants. In Exp. 1, four implanted (Synovex-S, 200 mg of progesterone plus 20 mg of estradiol benzoate) Angus steers and four Angus steers that were not implanted were assigned to concurrent 4 x 4 Latin squares. Initial BW averaged 296 kg. Each square consisted of moderate and moderately high DM intake treatments (4 and 6 kg/d) and low and adequate CP intake treatments (450 and 600 g/d) in a 2 x 2 factorial arrangement. Periods were 2 wk of adaptation, 5 wk of growth, and 1 wk of balance collection. Experiment 2 consisted of two replicates of 32 Hereford steers each (initial BW 324 kg). Each replicate was a 4 x 2 factorial in which steers were individually fed for 63 d. All steers had ad libitum access to a 60% corn-based concentrate diet containing either 7.9, 10.0, 12.1, or 14.6% CP (DM basis), and steers were either implanted or not implanted with Synovex-S. Experiment 3 was similar to Exp. 2 except that all steers (initial BW 315 kg) received a low-protein diet (7.6% CP) with calculated energy densities of either 1.86, 2.04, 2.22, or 2.42 Mcal ME/kg DM, and steers were limited to an equalized DM intake of 9.5 kg daily. In Exp. 1, gains for the low CP, moderate and moderately high DM intakes and the adequate CP, moderate and moderately high DM intakes were 240, 555, 208, and 730 g/d, respectively, for steers not implanted and 333, 643, 488, and 988 g/d, respectively, for implanted steers (SEM = 102 g/d). Respective values for retained N were .13, .18, .16, and .26 g/kg BW.75 and .13, .15, .22, and .29 g/kg BW.75 (SEM = .04 g/kg BW.75). Implant response was greater (CP x implant, P < .01) for both gain and retained N when adequate CP compared to low CP diets were fed. For Exp. 2, the lowest CP diet reduced ADG (.97 vs 1.27 kg/d) and efficiency of gain (100 vs 120 g gain/kg DM). Synovex-S was less effective in improving efficiency for the lowest protein diet than for the other diets (11.7 vs 20.2%). During Exp. 3, neither Synovex-S nor dietary energy influenced gain and efficiency. We concluded that adequate dietary protein is necessary to optimize the response to estrogenic growth promoters and that the low response under inadequate protein and energy intake is not improved by increasing the energy density of the diet. 相似文献

This paper reports the effects of reduced sensitivity to growth hormone-releasing hormone and thyrotropin-releasing hormone through feeding a subtherapeutic level of chlortetracycline (CTC; 350 mg CTC/d) and two levels of dietary CP (10% and 13% of diet DM) on growth performance and carcass merit characteristics. Thirty-two steers (initial average BW, 286 kg) were adapted to a common 13% CP diet consisting primarily of grass hay, corn, and soybean meal fed to gain 1.25 kg/d. The steers were assigned to four treatments (with or without CTC and 10% or 13% dietary CP in a factorial arrangement) and fed ad libitum amounts of diet for 91 d. Feed intake was determined daily and steers were weighed weekly. Steers were killed at the end of the feeding period for carcass merit determinations. Efficiency of BW gain was greater (P < .05) for steers fed the 13% CP diet than for the 10% CP diet and tended to be less for CTC-steers when the 10% CP diet was fed and greater for the CTC-steers when the 13% CP diet was fed (CTC x dietary CP interaction, P < .10). Feeding CTC increased (P < .01) fat over the longissimus muscle and marbling. This study is interpreted to indicate that the sustained effect of subtherapeutic feeding of CTC to cattle appears to increase fat deposition consistent with a reduced growth hormone and thyroid status reported earlier for these same steers. This would tend to increase energy utilization but may not necessarily produce a measurable increase in BW gain. 相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To determine whether administration of phenobarbital, potassium bromide, or both drugs concurrently was associated with abnormalities in baseline serum total thyroxine (T4), triiodothyronine (T3), free T4, or thyrotropin (thyroid-stimulating hormone; TSH) concentrations in epileptic dogs. DESIGN: Prospective case series. ANIMALS: 78 dogs with seizure disorders that did not have any evidence of a thyroid disorder (55 treated with phenobarbital alone, 15 treated with phenobarbital and bromide, and 8 treated with bromide alone) and 150 clinically normal dogs that were not receiving any medication. PROCEDURE: Serum total T4, total T3, free T4, and TSH concentrations, as well as serum concentrations of anticonvulsant drugs, were measured in the 78 dogs with seizure disorders. Reference ranges for hormone concentrations were established on the basis of results from the 150 clinically normal dogs. RESULTS: Total and free T4 concentrations were significantly lower in dogs receiving phenobarbital (alone or with bromide), compared with concentrations in clinically normal dogs. Administration of bromide alone was not associated with low total or free T4 concentration. Total T3 and TSH concentrations did not differ among groups of dogs. CLINICAL IMPLICATIONS: Results indicate that serum total and free T4 concentrations may be low (i.e., in the range typical for dogs with hypothyroidism) in dogs treated with phenobarbital. Serum total T3 and TSH concentrations were not changed significantly in association with phenobarbital administration. Bromide treatment was not associated with any significant change in these serum thyroid hormone concentrations. 相似文献

Six Salers steers, fitted with ruminal and duodenal cannulas, were used in a double 3x3 Latin square design to assess the depressive effect of the nature of wheat, flint corn, and dent corn on fiber digestion in animals fed high-concentrate diets, and to determine the mechanisms involved in these negative digestive effects. Diets were balanced to be equal in starch content (47.7+/-2.3%). The three cereals were characterized by ruminal starch digestibilities of 86.6, 60.8, and 34.8% for the wheat, dent corn, and flint corn, respectively. Ruminal digestion of NDF was lower with wheat- than with corn-based diets (49.4 vs. 55.2%; P<.001), and with dent corn than with flint corn (53 vs. 57.3%; P<.01). Degradability of hay in nylon bags was not affected by the grain source in the diet (P>.1). The mean retention time of forage particles in the rumen was similar between wheat and corn diets (P>.1), but it was lower for steers fed dent corn than for those fed flint corn (P<.05). Most fibrolytic activities of the solid-associated microorganisms were lower (P<.05) in animals fed wheat than in those fed corn. Differences in fibrolytic activities of the solid-associated microorganisms between the two corn genotypes were not statistically significant (P>.1), but activities of all fibrolytic enzymes were lower (P<.05) with the dent than with the flint corn diet. Protozoal number in ruminal fluid was lower in animals receiving wheat than in those fed corn (177 vs. 789x10(3)/mL; P<.001) and was related to the high ruminal acidity (P<.01) of the wheat diet. Large modifications in the rumen microbial ecosystem between the two corn genotypes were not visible in protozoal numbers or pH. Total-tract digestion of NDF was the same for wheat and for corn diets, averaging 55% for the three diets. A postruminal compensation of NDF digestion (14% of the total tract NDF digestion) seemed to occur with the wheat diet. The lack of any postruminal NDF digestion (0%) with the two corn diets may suggest negative digestive interactions in the hindgut similar to those in the rumen. 相似文献

Effects of different supplemental sugars and starch fed in combination with degradable intake protein on low-quality forage use by beef steers. 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1

Twenty ruminally fistulated steers (Exp. 1, 448 kg and Exp. 2, 450 kg) were used in two consecutive randomized complete block experiments with five treatments in each experiment. The purpose was to evaluate the impact of feeding different supplemental sugars or starch in combination with supplemental degradable intake protein (DIP) on the utilization of low-quality tallgrass-prairie hay. In Exp. 1, steers were given ad libitum access to forage and, except for the negative control (NC), received a limited supply (insufficient to maximize forage use) of supplemental DIP (.031% BW/d, DM basis). In addition to the NC, this experiment included four supplementation treatments in which one of four carbohydrate (CHO) sources (starch, glucose, fructose, or sucrose) was fed at .30% BW of DM/d. In Exp. 2, the treatment structure was identical except that the supplemental DIP level (.122% BW, DM basis) was near the level needed to maximize forage use. Forage OM intake (FOMI) was not affected (P> or =.26) by supplementation in Exp. 1 but was increased (P = .05) in Exp. 2. However, no difference (P> or =.46) in FOMI occurred among CHO sources in either experiment. Total OM and digestible OM intakes were increased (P<.01) by supplementation in both experiments. In Exp. 1, no difference (P>.26) in OM digestion (OMD) occurred among treatments. In Exp. 2, supplementation increased (P<.01) OMD. Additionally, sugars yielded a higher (P = .04) OMD than starch, and the monosaccharides yielded a higher (P = .02) OMD than sucrose. In Exp. 1, NDF digestion (NDFD) was decreased (P = .02) by supplementation, but no differences (P> or =.21) occurred among CHO sources. In Exp. 2, NDFD was increased (P = .03) by supplementation. Additionally, sugars led to higher (P = .05) NDFD than starch, and the monosaccharides led to higher (P = .03) NDFD than sucrose. In both experiments, discernible patterns were observable with regard to the effects of supplementation and type of supplemental CHO on ruminal fermentation characteristics. In conclusion, even though some consistency in fermentation profiles for different carbohydrate sources was evident in both experiments, forage intake and digestion responses were not consistent across experiments. This raises the possibility that carbohydrate source may interact with the amount of supplemental DIP fed and, as such, deserves additional investigation. 相似文献
