Erratum

In the report "Mutagenicity of fly ash particles in Paramecium" by J. Smith-Sonneborn et al. (9 Jan., p. 180), Tables 1 and 2 are printed incorrectly. Significance lines are missing from both tables and "uninduced" should read "induced" in the sixth, eighth, and ninth entries of the first column in Table 1. The tables are reprinted below as they should have appeared. Table 1. Mutagenic effect of fly ash and heat-treated fly ash in Paramecium. Values not connected by the same line are significantly different from each other (Wilcoxon matched-pairs signed-ranks test, alpha = .05). The data from six experiments were pooled since the control values for autogamous progeny were not significantly different. Cerophyl is the ryegrass extract used for cultivation of Paramecium. Induced S-9 is the Ames liver microsome fraction from rats receiving Arochlor 1254 (polychlorinated biphenyl) to activate the enzymes for conversion of promutagens to mutagenic form; uninduced S-9 is from rats receiving corn oil only (the vehicle for the Arochlor). Glass beads (1 to 3 ,microm) suspended in either induced or uninduced S-9 were used as a negative control for nonnutritive particles. Kaolinite was also used in one experiment, and the results were the same as those for the glass beads. Benzo[a]pyrene was the positive control for mutagenicity requiring induced S-9. The initial concentration of suspended fly ash was 535 ,microg/ml. The average number of affected progeny from treated parent cells was 20 percent higher than the average number of affected control progeny. Since one mutation would theoretically yield only 4 affected progeny in 16 autogamous progeny from a treated parent cell (6), the percentages, though low, reflect significant damage. Values not connected by the same line are significantly different from each other (pairwise comparisons of proportions, P < .05). The concentration of fly ash particles suspended in uninduced S-9 was 1068 ,ug/ml. The higher than usual value for mutagenicity in the controls can be attributed to the considerable age of the clone used here [micronuclear damage increases with age (12)]. 新疆兵团盐渍化农田现状与防治对策

为了研究新疆兵团土壤盐渍化现状问题,2015?2017年基于盐碱地划分标准设计了盐碱地分类面积表、盐碱地化学类型表、不同程度盐碱地生产状况表和盐碱地改良状况表等4份调查表,对139个团场进行盐渍化调查。调查结果表明,兵团盐渍化农田面积约为53.1万hm²,占总播种面积（120.2万hm²）的44%,盐渍化耕地中约23.2%为原生盐渍土,76.8%为次生盐渍土;硫酸盐型、氯化物型、苏打型和碱土型盐渍化耕地的面积分别为16.19万、5.85万、20.65万、10.41万hm²,分别占兵团盐渍化土壤面积的30.5%、11.0%、38.9%、19.6%。次生盐渍化普遍造成作物减产,化肥和有机肥投入量随着盐渍化加剧而增加。目前,盐碱地治理的方法有水利改良、农业改良、生物治理和化学改良,但是不同改良方法的改良效果差别较大,水利措施和农业措施改良效果较好。为防治土壤盐渍化,需建立兵团耕地质量数据库和兵团盐渍化农田综合治理领导小组,联合疆内外高校共同开展技术攻关与技术集成。     

Erratum

In Table 1 (p. 351) of the report "Structure-activity studies of interleukin-2" by F. E. Cohen et al. (17 Oct., p. 349), reference 15 was incorrectly cited for the entries for the 1-29, 30-49, and 100-133 deletion mutants. For all three entries, the reference should have been (16).

In the report "DNA amplification for direction detection of HIV-1 in DNA of peripheral blood mononuclear cells " Chin-Yih Ou et al. (15 Jan., p. 295), the fourth sentence of reference 21 (p. 297) should have read, "The PCR reaction mixture contained 1 microg of PBMC DNA, 100 pmol each of primers (Table 2), 200 microM each of four deoxyribonucleoside triphosphates, 10 microM tris-HC1, pH 8.3, 50 mM KC1, 2.5 mM MgCl(2), 0.01% gelatin and 0.6 unit of thermoresistant DNA polymerase of Thermus aquaticus."

In the report "Aborginal Indian residence patterns preserved in censuses and allotments" by John H. Moore (11 Jan., p. 201), Table 1 was inadvertently omitted: Table 1. In the report "Fatty acids ... smooth muscle cells" by J. J. Huttner et al. (15 July, p. 289), Table 1 was reset after the authors had approved their galleys. Through faulty proofreading at Science, an omitted line was not detected and the table as printed is meaningless. The body of Table 1 should read.

In the report by N. Yamamoto et al., "Transformation of human leukocytes by cocultivation with an adult T cell leukemia virus producer cell line" (20 Aug., p. 737), the column headings in Table 1, on page 738, under "Cells with markers (%)," should have read: Leu 1, Leu 2a, Leu 3a, Leu 4, and Ia (not immunoglobulin A).

In the report "Cloud droplet deposition in subalpine balsam fir forests: Hydrological and chemical inputs" by G. M. Lovett et al. (24 Dec., p. 1303), two errors appeared in Table 2 on page 1304. The cloud deposition of SO(4)(2-), incorrectly reported as 275.8 kg ha(-1) year(-1), should have been 137.9 kg ha(-1) year(-1). The percentage of the sum contributed by clouds, reported as 81 for SO(4)(2-), should have been 68.

In the Research Article "The cholinergic neuronal differentiation factor from heart cells is identical to leukemia inhibitory factor" by T. Yamamori et al. (15 Dec., p. 1412), figure 2 (p. 1414) was printed incorrectly. The correct figure appears below. See Table in the PDF file.

In Table 1 of the report "Monoclonal antibody to Thy-1 enhances regeneration of processes by rat retinal ganglion cells in culture" by D. Leifer et al. (20 Apr., p. 303), the unit of measurement, micrometers, was omitted in the third column, "Mean length of processes per cell."     

Corrections and clarifications

Table 2 (p. 1127) of the report "Rules for alpha-helix termination by glycine" by R. Aurora et al. (20 May, p. 1126) was incorrectly printed. The corrected table appears below. In the same report, the second sentence of reference 36 should not have appeared. [See table in the PDF file].     

Erratum

Table 1 of the report "Reversible cleavage and ligation of hepatitis delta virus RNA" by H.-N. Wu and M. M. C. Lai (3 Feb., p. 652) contained an error. The religation percentage when the concentration of Mg(2+) in the cleavage reaction was 2.4 mM and the concentration of EDTA was 3.0 mM should have been 10. The correct table is printed below.

In the report "Color vision is altered during the suppression phase of binocular rivalry" by Earl L. Smith III et al. (19 Nov., p. 802), four entries in Table 1 (p. 803) were incorrect. The dominance scores at 460 nanometers should be 4.37* for both subjects E.S. and D. L., and the dominance scores at 640 nm should be 4.37* for E.S. and 4.64* for D.L.     

Mechanism of Antibody Synthesis: Size Differences between Mouse Kappa Chains

In the report "Mechanism of antibody synthesis: size differences between mouse kappa chains" by W. R. Gray et al. (27 Jan., p. 465), the headings of the final two columns of Table 1 should be reversed to read "Transversions" and "Transitions."     

Erratum

Table 3 of the report "Seroprevalence and epidemiological correlates of HTLV-I infection in U.S. blood donors" by Alan E. Williams et al. (29 Apr. 1988, p. 643) contained errors. The correct table is printed below. [See Table 3 in Source Pdf.].

In the report "Aflatoxin production by a variant of Apergillus oryzae (NRRL strain 1988) on cowpeas (Vigna sinensis)" by N. El-Hag and R. E. Morse [192, 1345 (1976)], the third sentence in the legend to Table 1 should read "This strain produced aflatoxin on rice (expressed as micrograms per kilogram ...)." Also, the heading for columns 2 and 3 of Table 1 should read "Aflatoxin (microg/kg) from A. oryzae."     

Errattm

In the letter from George R. Hendrey (7 Oct.. p. 8). the references in the headings of tables 1 and 2 were incorrect. They should have been given as (1) and (2). respectively.     

Erratum

The authors of the Research Article "Chromatin structure and de novo methylation of sperm DNA: Implications for activation of the paternal genome" (31 May, p. 1061) were Mark Groudine and Kathleen F. Conklin. Conklin's name was mis-spelled in the Table of Contents and in the by-line.

Table 3 in the report "Latitudinal and longitudinal oscillations of cloud features on Neptune" by Lawrence A. Sromovsky (1 Nov., p. 684) contained errors. In column 4, the two values for inferred shear should have been -0.8 and -13.8 m/(s-deg), respectively. The corresponding text in column 1 on page 686 should have read, "the advection model is quantitatively upheld for the DS2 motions, but not for the short-period component of the GDS motions. They both agree on phase lags, although the GDS is not in good quantitative agreement on amplitudes. Relative to a smooth shear profile obtained from a simple polynomial fit to the observed wind speeds as a function of latitude (11), the shear derived from the advective model amplitude ratio is almost the same for DS2, but a ninth as large for the GDS."
