Growth and survival rates of smallmouth bass ( Micropterus dolomieui ) were compared for fishes reared from larval stages, for three weeks using different feeding regimes. Diets consisted of a commercial dry diet formulated for larval fishes, the dry diet plus Artemia salina nauplii, and Artemia salina nauplii alone. Smallmouth bass on the three diets showed average daily gains of 0.7, 0.7 and 0.5 mm/day and 11.0, 11.4 and 5.2 mg/day, respectively. Condition factors for the three diets were not significantly different ( P > 0.05). Mean survival rates were 39, 85 and 77% respectively.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of Artemia nauplii enriched with different concentrations of highly unsaturated fatty acids (HUFAs) on the lipid metabolic response, peroxidation, and antioxidant defence status of the lined seahorse (Hippocampus erectus) juveniles. Twenty‐day‐old juveniles were fed Artemia nauplii enriched with four different concentrations (0.0 µL/L [control, A], 13.5 µL/L [B], 27.0 µL/L [C], and 54.0 µL/L [D]) of HUFAs (two thirds DHA and one third EPA) for 30 d. The activities of lipase and lipoproteinlipase of the juveniles significantly increased with increasing HUFA concentration; however, the activities of malate dehydrogenase and lactate content decreased with increasing HUFA concentration. Alkaline phosphatase activity and pyruvic acid content were not significantly different among the three treatments and the control. Malonaldehyde content was significantly negatively related to the enrichment concentrations (in Treatments A, B, and C); however, it increased significantly in Treatment D. The activities of superoxide dismutase in Treatments A and B were significantly higher than that in Treatments C and D. Catalase activity increased significantly from the control to Treatment C, then decreased significantly in Treatment D. Glutathione peroxidase activities increased significantly with increasing concentration of HUFAs, and peaked in Treatment D. The results indicate that dietary HUFAs are able to modify some enzymatic activities, and moderate dietary HUFA supplementation significantly promotes lipid metabolism and reduces lipid peroxidation products by enhancing antioxidant defence in the juveniles. However, excess HUFAs may result in adverse effects on the enzymatic activities in the juveniles, which might be related to oxidative stress.  相似文献

Abstract

Aiming at a precocious substitution of live prey by artificial diet, a 20-day experiment with pacu, Piaractus mesopotamicuslarvae using co-feeding and abrupt weaning strategies was set up. At the end of the experiment, larvae fed Artemia showed the best results (P < 0.05) in weight, total length and biomass, compared with other treatments. Larvae fed exclusively a microencapsulated diet never ingested the diet. Diet ingestion in co-fed and abrupt-weaned larvae was low, but did increase during the experiment; however, Artemia influenced diet ingestion on co-fed larvae. Careful considerations should be given to diet processing and formulation to ensure survival and growth of larvae fed exclusively on prepared diets.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

The aim of the present study was to evaluate the survival and growth of larvae (L) of pintado, Pseudoplatystoma corruscans, fed different Artemia sp. proportions: 50, 200, 350, 500, 650, 800, and 950 Artemia nauplii per larva per day, in a complete randomized design. Water salinity was 1.7%, and larviculture lasted for a period of 15 days, which was divided into three individual 5-day trials. Larvae were stocked at a density of 15 per liter and kept in the dark. The concentrations of un-ionized ammonia-N and nitrite-N were directly proportional to the increase in prey density (P < 0.05). Regression analysis showed increased survival and growth rates up to 200, 350, and 500 nauplii/L/day, for the first, second, and third trials, respectively. These results indicate that larval food intake is related to ontogenetic development stage.  相似文献

Fish and fish products are characterized for having a short shelf life. Nonthermal processing techniques such as high hydrostatic pressure (HHP) have increasingly been employed to extend shelf life of food products. The aim of this study was to evaluate changes on flesh physicochemical spoilage parameters (pH, total volatile bases (TVB-N), trimethylamine (TMA), thiobarbituric acid (TBA), and color) of palm ruff (Seriolella violacea) fillets in pre- and post-rigor conditions, subjected to two different HHP conditions: 450 MPa and 550 MPa, for 3 and 4 min each. Unpressurized and pressurized fillets were kept in chilled storage (4 ± 1°C) for 26 days to assess the effect of HHP on shelf life. pH and TBA values increased after HHP treatment and with storage time for both unpressurized and pressurized samples. This is attributable to pressure-induced lipid oxidation. Lightness (L*) values increased with pressure, where fish fillets had a cooked appearance. TMA and TVB-N values decreased after HHP treatment compared to the unpressurized samples, showing that HHP treatment is an efficient method to maintain the quality of palm ruff fillets. There was no clear difference between pre- and post-rigor in the parameters evaluated.  相似文献

This paper reports on an experiment to determine growth and survival of blacklip pearl oyster, Pinctada margaritifera (L.), larvae fed a 1:1 mixture of Isochrysis aff. galbana clone T-ISO and Pavlova salina at six different densities (1, 2, 5, 10, 20 and 30 × 103 cells ml-1. Larval growth and survival were assessed every four days over a 20–day period. Exponential and logistic regression models were fitted to the growth and survival responses, respectively. Overall growth of larvae fed 5 × 103 cells ml-1 was significantly greater (p > 0.01) than growth of larvae reared at other algal densities. The optimal food ration for maximum larval growth was 20 × 103 cells ml-1, which resulted in larvae with antero-posterior shell length of 230 m after 20 days. These larvae were significantly larger (p > 0.05) than those in all other treatments at the end of the experiment. Survival of larvae fed 0, 1 and 2 × 103 cells ml-1 was significantly lower than that of larvae in all other treatments at the end of 15 days (p > 0.01). Maximal survival (8%) over the 20 day period was shown by larvae fed 10 × 103 cells ml-1, while lower survival was shown by larvae fed 2 × 103 cells ml-1 (2%) and 1 × 103 cells ml-1 (0%).  相似文献

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of varying dietary levels of highly unsaturated fatty acids (HUFAs) in live prey (Artemia nauplii and a calanoid copepod, Schmackeria dubia) on the growth performance, survival, and fatty acid composition of the lined seahorse, Hippocampus erectus, juveniles. Artemia nauplii were enriched with a commercial product (SS? 50DE‐microcapsule as HUFA source, 2/3 DHA, 1/3 EPA. Shengsuo Fishery Feed Research Center of Shandong Province, Qingdao, China) at four concentrations of 0.0, 14.0, 28.0, and 56.0. Newly hatched juveniles were cultured for 35 days. The content of docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), and n‐3 HUFAs in the Artemia nauplii was positively related to the enrichment concentration. At the end of the trials, growth performance of the juveniles was positively related to the enrichment concentration as well. However, the juveniles fed prey enriched with the highest concentration of enrichment (56.0 μL/L) had the significantly lower (P < 0.05) survival rate. The juveniles fed the copepod had the best growth performance and the highest survival rate, suggesting that the copepod, S. dubia, is suitable for feeding the seahorse juveniles. The comparisons between the growth, survival, and fatty acid profiles of the juveniles fed Artemia and copepods indicate that the seahorse juveniles require dietary levels of DHA beyond those achieved by enriching prey with the HUFA enrichment. Surplus EPA resulted from an imbalance between DHA and EPA in the enriched Artemia nauplii probably caused an adverse effect on the seahorse juveniles. This study suggests that DHA and EPA requirement of the lined seahorse juveniles is roughly 32% of total fatty acid, and the optimal DHA/EPA ratio for the species is circa 4:1. To avoid an adverse effect resulting from excessive EPA, maximum proportion of EPA in enriched Artemia nauplii should not exceed 13% of total fatty acid, and a recommended minimum DHA/EPA ratio in the enriched Artemia nauplii is 1.46. Arachidonic acid (20:4n‐6) might not be an essential fatty acid for the seahorse juveniles.  相似文献

–Growth, feed efficiency and survival of gilthead sea bream Sparus aurata larvae fed exclusively various levels of enriched Artemia during the period 25 DPH-34 DPH were investigated. Larvae had an average initial fresh body weight (BW) of 4.99 mg and were fed on Artemia at rates of 20, 35, 50, 65, and 80% of their body weight per day, in two equal meals. Each ration was administered to duplicate groups of 1,000 larvae, with ration readjusted every second day. Feeding rate had a significant effect on larval survival, which was lower in larvae fed the 20 and 35% BS/d rations. The specific growth rate (SGR) showed a curvilinear significant increase when the feeding rate was increased from 20 to 65% BW/d, but there was no improvement when the feeding rate was increased from 65 to 80% BW/d. Percent feed efficiency (FE) decreased significantly from a maximum value at 20% ration to 80% BW/d but at 65% and 80% rations the values of FE were not significantly different. Optimum ration (minimum quantity of Artemia concomitant with maximum larval growth) was estimated close to 65% BW/d. The significance of the results is discussed in relation to potential economics of Artemia cysts use in commercial hatcheries.  相似文献

Abstract— Enrichment of live food for marine fish larvae with highly unsaturated fatty acids (HUFA) has been shown to improve survival, growth and stress resistance in many species and to decrease pigmentation abnormalities in flatfish. In order to aid the developing summer flounder industry, we conducted an experiment in which summer flounder larvae were fed diets differing in HUFA composition to determine whether enrichment with a commercially available product would increase survival and growth and reduce the incidence of abnormal pigmentation. We also examined whether growing unenriched rotifers on different species of algae would affect the survival, growth and pigmentation of the flounder larvae to which they were fed. Growth of summer flounder larvae was significantly better when they were fed HUFA-enriched Mtifers and Artemia rather than unenriched and, among the unenriched treatments, was significantly better when the larvae were fed rotifers raised on Isochrysis galbana rather than on Tetraselmis suecica . The percentage of larvae that failed to complete metamorphosis during the experiment was significantly higher in the unenriched treatments than in the enriched treatments. Neither survival nor percentage of individuals with pigmentation abnormalities were significantly different among the treatments.

Newly hatched Crangon zoeae from different maternal shrimp were raised separately using an Imhoff cone larval-rearing system. Experimental diets were Chaetoceros gracile , live Artemia nauplii, lyophilized Arremia nauplii particles, calcium alginate microencapsulated (CAM) Artemia nauplii, lyophilized Daphnia magna and CAM Daphnia magna . A dependable "atomizer" design for lab oratory preparation of CAM diets was developed. Initially, survival rates of zoeae fed either Chaetoceros or live Artemia nauplii were evaluated in order to establish a suitable control diet for subsequent growth experiments, and the interbrood and intrabrood components of zoed survival variation were analyzed.
Crangon zoeae ate every type of food offered to them, but only Chaeroceros- fed zoeae survived to metamorphosis. Zoeal survival rates were extremely variable. Interbrood variation was greater than intrabrood variation, but the difference was not statistically significant. Zoeae from smaller maternal shrimp were generally more active and had greater survival rates than zoeae from larger, presumably older and senescent shrimp. Zoeae that were fed Chaetoceros supplemented with CAM Artemia nauplii had significantly greater ( P < 0.001) growth rates than siblings fed only Chaetoceros .
Suspension feeding on Chaetoceros was probably more efficient than raptorial feeding on Artemia nauplii, resulting in greater survival rates. Supplementing a successful microalgal diet with CAM Artemia nauplii allowed greater use of zoeal feeding mechanisms, added an animal nutrient source to the diet, and affected growth rates by increasing the molt increment and decreasing the intermolt period.  相似文献

Intact microencapsulated protozoeal diets (MED), added to 5 m filtered hatchery water at the recommended concentration of 4 mg L-1 gave no significant difference in bacterial numbers after 6 h, over a 48 h period compared to control groups in autoclaved hatchery water. Disruption of the MED resulted in a significant increase in bacterial numbers up to 12 h compared to controls with intact microcapsules. Protein leach rates were similar in sterile water and 5 m filtered water, indicating that leaching was independent of microbial activity. MED leached significantly less dietary solubles compared to a microparticulate diet (MPD). There was no evidence to suggest significant attachment of bacteria to diet particles for at least 48 h.In low-quality water after algal blooms, survival of white shrimp (Penaeus indicus) larvae was poor when reared in both sterile and 5 m filtered water. The addition of bacteria filtered from xenic algal cultures together with the algal exudates to such water gave significant improvements in survival to larvae fed MED in 5 m filtered water but not in autoclaved culture water. Live algal diets promote high larval survival and growth irrespective of the inclusion of bacteria. It is suggested that algal exudates act as selective bacteriocides and total replacement of algae with MED requires a balanced bacterial community which can be attained at times from natural sea water, or when the natural bacterial community balance is disturbed, corrected by the use of algal exudates.  相似文献

An experiment was carried out on turbot larvae fed three different rotifer enrichment diets: Dry Selco, Protein Selco and ICES low-HUFA (an enrichment emulsion containing low amounts of highly unsaturated fatty acids—HUFA). Seven tanks were set up for each diet. After the rotifer stage, approximately seven days after hatching, the larvae were fed newly-hatched Artemia salina nauplii (AT-1; Brazil strain). From day 10, enriched Great Salt Lake Artemia nauplii were introduced. Each set of seven tanks was further subdivided and the larvae fed Arternia nauplii enriched with one of four enrichment diets: Dry Selco, Protein Selco, ICES low-HUFA or Super Selco. The rotifer enrichments had no significant effect on larval growth and survival. The nutritional value of the Artemia stage (day 13 to 26) was more important for the overall larval survival.  相似文献

The effects of two microencapsulated feeds were evaluated on development, growth, survival, proteolytic activity, and biochemical composition of white shrimp, Litopenaeus vannamei, larvae. The treatments were: (1) basal microcapsules (BM), (2) microcapsules containing krill hydrolysate (BMK), and (3) live food control (LFC: Artemia franciscana nauplii) with all treatments receiving algae (Chaetoceros ceratosporum and Tetraselmis chuii). No significant differences were found in development index and survival among larvae. Growth rate was significantly higher in larvae fed LFC (15 ± 0.06%/d) as compared with those offered the BM diet (7.5 ± 0.5%/d) with the BMK (11 ± 0.04%/d) treatment producing intermediate results. The activity of total proteases and chymotrypsin decreased significantly after Mysis I (MI) in larvae fed LFC or BMK. Protein content of larvae increased significantly toward PL1. The acylglycerides content in MIII fed on LFC (2.3 ± 0.2%/dw) was higher than that MI fed BM (1 ± 0.01%/dw). No difference was observed in the cholesterol (CH) content of the larvae. The acylglycerides/protein and cholesterol/protein ratios showed a decreasing pattern between MI and PL1, indicating that these two ratios were related to ontogenetic shifts. These results demonstrate improvements in microparticulate diets when krill hydrolysates are included in the formulation.  相似文献

Minced Taiwan mauxia shrimp Acetes intermedius , an alternative to brine shrimp Artemia sp. nauplii, has long been used as a principal or supplemental feed in prawn hatcheries in Southeast Asia and India. In this study, black tiger prawn Penaeus monodon postlarvae were fed with frozen brine shrimp nauplii (diet B) or minced Taiwan mauxia shrimp (diet M) for 4 wk to compare their astaxanthin concentration and composition, survival, and growth. Diet B contained two and a half times more total carotenoid (TC) than diet M, with canthaxanthin as a major (79%) carotenoid, but without astaxanthin, a predominant carotenoid in crustaceans. Of its TC in diet M, 55% was β-carotene and 17% astaxanthin. B-prawn (postlarvae fed with diet B) had a similar growth rate as M-prawn and twice the survival rate as M-prawn. The concentrations of total astaxanthin (TA), free astaxanthin (FA), astaxanthin monoester (MA), and astaxanthin di-ester (DA) in B-prawn were all higher than those in M-prawn. Except for FA, no reduction of TA, MA, or DA concentration during the feeding interval was found in B-prawn. However, concentrations of TA, FA, MA, and DA in M-prawn all decreased. TC content of the experimental diets had a greater influence on resulting prawn astaxanthin concentration and composition than carotenoid compositions of the diets.  相似文献

The use of live algae and preserved algal products was examined as to their utility in supporting growth and survival of the feather duster worm, Sabellastarte spectabilis. Hatchery‐reared 4‐mo‐old worms were provided the same cell densities of live T‐Iso, preserved T‐Iso, live Nannochlropsis sp., and preserved Nannochloropsis sp. over the course of 132 d. A group of worms placed in a water table that received a continuous flow of raw seawater served as controls. Live and preserved T‐Iso resulted in the highest survival (86.7 ± 6.2% and 78.3 ± 16.5%, respectively) compared to all the other treatments. Live T‐Iso fed worms resulted in significantly larger worms than all other treatments with the preserved T‐Iso treatment supporting similar growth to those being fed live Nannochloropsis sp. and exposed to raw seawater. The preserved Nannochloropsis sp. resulted in significantly lower survival and growth when compared to all the other treatments. Fatty acid profiles of the algal diets and worm carcasses obtained during the current investigation suggest that T‐Iso outperformed Nannochloropsis because of its higher energy or fatty acid content.  相似文献
