The use of computed tomography in the diagnosis of an ectopic ureter in a Quarter Horse filly

This report describes a 4‐month‐old Quarter Horse filly with an ectopic ureter. The filly presented with signs of urinary incontinence, which had been present since birth. Computed tomography (CT) examination and cystoscopy confirmed a diagnosis of a unilateral ectopic ureter. A nephrectomy of the left kidney was performed and renal function was closely monitored post operatively. The filly was treated for abdominal chylous effusion as a post operative complication. The filly survived to discharge from the hospital, and maintained normal urinary function at 12 months post operatively.     

Renal dysplasia,ectopic ureter,septic ureterectasia and cryptorchidism in an 11-month-old Cob colt presenting with ascending pyoureter and pyocystis

An 11-month-old entire male Cob colt was presented for unilateral cryptorchid castration and intermittent purulent urethral discharge. Cystoscopy, trans-cutaneous and trans-rectal abdominal ultrasonography and contrast enhanced computed tomography examinations confirmed unilateral cryptorchidism, ipsilateral renal dysplasia and pyoureter with dilatation and ectopia. While nephrectomy may be a viable treatment approach for some cases of unilateral renal dysplasia, surgical intervention was not attempted in this case owing to financial constraints and the yearling was subjected to euthanasia. To the authors’ knowledge, this is the first report of a case of complex congenital urogenital malformation including ipsilateral renal dysplasia, pyoureter with dilatation and ectopia and cryptorchidism, a finding which has been reported more commonly in human males.     

Closing wedge ostectomy and medial distal tibia plate application for treatment of severe bilateral angular limb deformities in the hindlimbs of an 8-month-old foal

This case report describes the evaluation, surgical approach and outcome of an 8-month-old foal with severe angular limb deformities of both metatarsophalangeal joints (MTPJ). Radiography and computed tomography (CT) were used to diagnose a windswept deformity of the hindlimbs with associated bilateral physitis. The orthopaedic surgery was planned and rehearsed using three-dimensional (3D) bone models. A bilateral closing wedge ostectomy was performed on the distal MtIII, and 3.5 mm LCP^® medial distal tibia plates were used bilaterally for osteosynthesis. Even though convalescence was prolonged and complicated by partial unilateral implant failure and osteoarthritis (OA), reduction of the deformities was successful and resulted in a sound foal.
