Textures of calcite crystals from a variety of mineralized tissues belonging to organisms from four phyla were examined with high-resolution synchrotron x-ray radiation. Significant differences in coherence length and angular spread were observed between taxonomic groups. Crystals from polycrystalline skeletal ensembles were more perfect than those that function as single-crystal elements. Different anisotropic effects on crystal texture were observed for sea urchin and mollusk calcite crystals, whereas none was found for the foraminifer, Patellina, and the control calcite crystals. These results show that the manipulation of crystal texture in different organisms is under biological control and that crystal textures in some tissues are adapted to function. A better understanding of this apparently widespread biological phenomenon may provide new insights for improving synthetic crystal-containing materials.  相似文献

Biological matrices can direct the absolute alignment of inorganic crystals such as calcite. Cooperative effects at an organic-inorganic interface resulted in similar co-alignment of calcite at polymeric Langmuir-Schaefer films of 10,12-pentacosadiynoic acid (p-PDA). The films nucleated calcite at the (012) face, and the crystals were co-aligned with respect to the polymer's conjugated backbone. At the same time, the p-PDA alkyl side chains reorganized to optimize the stereochemical fit to the calcite structure, as visualized by changes in the optical spectrum of the polymer. These results indicate the kinds of interactions that may occur in biological systems where large arrays of crystals are co-aligned.  相似文献

Irregular length of day (LOD) fluctuations on time scales of less than a few years are largely produced by atmospheric torques on the underlying planet. Significant coherence is found between the respective time series of LOD and atmospheric angular momentum (AAM) determinations at periods down to 8 days, with lack of coherence at shorter periods caused by the declining signal-to-measurement noise ratios of both data types. Refinements to the currently accepted model of tidal Earth rotation variations are required, incorporating in particular the nonequilibrium effect of the oceans. The remaining discrepancies between LOD and AAM in the 100- to 10-day period range may be due to either a common error in the AAM data sets from different meteorological centers, or another component of the angular momentum budget.  相似文献

Micropatterning of single crystals for technological applications is a complex, multistep process. Nature provides alternative fabrication strategies, when crystals with exquisite micro-ornamentation directly develop within preorganized frameworks. We report a bio-inspired approach to growing large micropatterned single crystals. Micropatterned templates organically modified to induce the formation of metastable amorphous calcium carbonate were imprinted with calcite nucleation sites. The template-directed deposition and crystallization of the amorphous phase resulted in the fabrication of millimeter-sized single calcite crystals with sub-10-micron patterns and controlled crystallographic orientation. We suggest that in addition to regulating the shape, micropatterned frameworks act as sites for stress and impurity release during the amorphous-to-crystalline transition. The proposed mechanisms may have direct biological relevance and broad implications in materials synthesis.  相似文献

The skeletons of adult echinoderms comprise large single crystals of calcite with smooth convoluted fenestrated morphologies, raising many questions about how they form. By using water etching, infrared spectroscopy, electron diffraction, and environmental scanning electron microscopy, we show that sea urchin spine regeneration proceeds via the initial deposition of amorphous calcium carbonate. Because most echinoderms produce the same type of skeletal material, they probably all use this same mechanism. Deposition of transient amorphous phases as a strategy for producing single crystals with complex morphology may have interesting implications for the development of sophisticated materials.  相似文献

Studies relating the magnesium (Mg) content of calcified skeletons to temperature often report unexplained deviations from the signature expected for inorganically grown calcite. These "vital effects" are believed to have biological origins, but mechanistic bases for measured offsets remain unclear. We show that a simple hydrophilic peptide, with the same carboxyl-rich character as that of macromolecules isolated from sites of calcification, increases calcite Mg content by up to 3 mole percent. Comparisons to previous studies correlating Mg content of carbonate minerals with temperature show that the Mg enhancement due to peptides results in offsets equivalent to 7 degrees to 14 degrees C. The insights also provide a physical basis for anecdotal evidence that organic chemistry modulates the mineralization of inorganic carbonates and suggest an approach to tuning impurity levels in controlled materials synthesis.  相似文献

The relative importance of the pelagic flux of aragonite, as compared to calcite, to the deep-sea floor has been evaluated by means of a quantitative x-ray diffraction study of samples collected from sediment traps and from an unusually shallow portion of the open Atlantic Ocean (the Rio Grande Rise). The results suggest that the aragonite flux constitutes at least 12 percent of the total flux of calcium carbonate on a worldwide basis. The presence of high-magnesium calcite in several samples suggests that some of the calcareous material falling to the deep-sea floor may be derived from the long-distance transport of debris from shallow-water beenthic organisms as well as from the settling of planktonic remains. This observation supports the contention that 12 percent represents a minimum value. Aragonite and high-magnesium calcite transported laterally from shallow-water regions, upon dissolution during settling into deeper water, may contribute to the neutralization of excess anthropogenic carbon dioxide added to the oceans.  相似文献

Superconductivity is related to the presence of a narrow forbidden gap in the spectrum of the possible energies for the electrons in the material. These "superconductivity gaps" have traditionally been studied with tunneling and infrared absorption experiments. A third, powerful technique has been made possible by the discovery of hightransition temperature materials: the direct observation of the gap in photoemission spectra. The data analysis requires a careful reconsideration of the standard Einstein-Fermi model of the photoelectric effect. The conclusions are surprisingly simple and offer an alternate way to measure superconductivity gaps. This approach can also be used to study the directional properties of the gap, phenomena related to the coherence length, and possible departures from Fermi-liquid behavior.  相似文献

[目的]对指接板生产工艺条件进行改进研究。[方法]利用杉木、马尾松、楸树、香椿等几个主要用材树种作为试制材料,在改性脲醛树脂胶黏剂的胶合下,以胶压强度、时间、施胶量作为工艺条件研究因子,采用正交试验设计,得到不同树种最优生产工艺参数。通过指接板的物理力学性状的研究,寻找到密度、指榫长度之间的关系,以及顺纹抗压强度。[结果]杉木平均密度0.33 g/cm3,指榫长10~13 mm,顺纹抗压强度46 MPa,工艺条件最佳组合涂胶量260 g/m2,胶压时间5 s,胶压强度0.8 MPa;马尾松平均密度0.45 g/cm3,指榫长12~14 mm,顺纹抗压强度38 MPa,工艺条件最佳组合涂胶量260 g/m2,胶压时间3 s,胶压强度1.1 MPa;楸树平均密度0.47 g/cm3,指榫长12~14 mm、顺纹抗压强度22 MPa,工艺条件最佳组合涂胶量260 g/m2,胶压时间5 s,胶压强度1.6 MPa;香椿平均密度0.59g/cm3,指榫长12~15 mm,顺纹抗压强度21 MPa,工艺条件最佳组合涂胶量260 g/m2,胶压时间5 s,胶压强度1.6 MPa。[结论]其甲醛释放量达到E1标准,使指接板的生产工艺得到改进,板材质量得到提高。  相似文献

In conventional x-ray diffraction experiments on single crystals, essentially monochromatic x-rays are used. If polychromatic x-rays derived from a synchrotron radiation spectrum are used, they generate a Laue diffraction pattern. Laue patterns from single crystals of macromolecules can be obtained in less-than 1 second, and significant radiation damage does not occur over the course of an exposure. Integrated intensities are obtained without rotation of the crystal, and individual structure factors may be extracted for most reflections. The Laue technique thus offers advantages for the recording of diffraction patterns from short-lived structural intermediates; that is, for time-resolved crystallography.  相似文献

The crystals of most proteins or other biological macromolecules are poorly ordered and diffract to lower resolutions than those observed for most crystals of simple organic and inorganic compounds. Crystallization in the microgravity environment of space may improve crystal quality by eliminating convection effects near growing crystal surfaces. A series of 11 different protein crystal growth experiments was performed on U.S. space shuttle flight STS-26 in September 1988. The microgravity-grown crystals of gamma-interferon D1, porcine elastase, and isocitrate lyase are larger, display more uniform morphologies, and yield diffraction data to significantly higher resolutions than the best crystals of these proteins grown on Earth.  相似文献

Unmineralized bacterial cells, mostly Micrococcus sp., but including also Streptococcus sp. and Actinomyces sp., were found in enormous numbers in lake beds of the Newark Canyon Formation of Early Cretaceous age, Eureka County, Nevada. The micrococci are black, and have an average diameter about 0.5 micro. Similar black micrococci (0.4 to 0.7 micro) were found in profusion in the bottom mud of Green Lake, New York. About 80 percent of this mud consists of minute idiomorphic calcite crystals and about 20 percent of these contain enormous numbers of the black micrococci. It is suggested that the Early Cretaceous bacterial cells owe their preservation to occlusion in calcite crystals that grew in a black, bacterial mud in a meromictic lake in which part of the Newark Canyon Formation accumulated.  相似文献

The skeletons of living specimens of the scleractinian coral Porites lobata have been found to contain up to 46 +/- 5 percent low-magnesium calcite even though free of gross detrital inclusions and boring or encrusting organisms. The calcite crystals occur in the interior of skeletal structures, have dimensions of 20 micrometers or less, and are surrounded by typical aragonite needles. Biogenic deposition seems to be the most likely source of the calcite, although the evidence does not rule out diagenesis of metastable.  相似文献

Single-wall fullerene nanotubes were converted from nearly endless, highly tangled ropes into short, open-ended pipes that behave as individual macromolecules. Raw nanotube material was purified in large batches, and the ropes were cut into 100- to 300-nanometer lengths. The resulting pieces formed a stable colloidal suspension in water with the help of surfactants. These suspensions permit a variety of manipulations, such as sorting by length, derivatization, and tethering to gold surfaces.  相似文献

Variations in the earth's rotation (UT1) and length of day have been tracked at the submillisecond level by astronomical radio interferometry and laser ranging to the LAGEOS satellite. Three years of regular measurements reveal complex patterns of variations including UT1 fluctuations as large as 5 milliseconds in a few weeks. Comparison of the observed changes in length of day with variations in the global atmospheric angular momentum indicates that the dominant cause of changes in the earth's spin rate, on time scales from a week to several years, is the exchange of angular momentum between the atmosphere and the mantle. The unusually intense El Ni?o of 1982-1983 was marked by a strong peak in the length of day.  相似文献

The discrepancy between the magnetic hysteresis properties of magnetite crystals that are precipitated from solution (<0.3 micrometer) and of crushed sifted grains (>0.3 micrometer) is not an inherent property of magnetite but is caused by the highly stressed state of crushed material and by adhering finer fragments. The size trends of magnetic properties exhibited by submicrometer-size precipitated grains continue in the size range from 1 micrometer to 1 millimeter in a set of hydrothermally recrystallized magnetite crystals. Coercive forces of these narrowly sized crystals follow a power law over a wide size range (0.1 micrometer to 1 millimeter) as predicted by theory. Dislocation etch pits show similar dislocation densities for hydrothermally grown (3 x 10(10) meter (-2)) and natural (1 x 10(10) meter(-2)) magnetite crystals. Hysteresis parameters of hydrothermally grown crystals are similar to those of natural crystals but are about one-fifth of those for crushed grains.  相似文献

Polycrystalline calcite was revealed by scanning electron microscopy of fractured skeletal ossicles of the sea star Echinaster spinulosus (Echinodermata, Asteroidea). Whisker-like calcite crystals were observed in specimens that were loaded in stress relaxation before being fractured; rapidly broken surfaces were smooth and glassy. The crystallites were 1300 angstroms wide and at least 3600 angstroms long and were packed together in lamellae. The lamellae were wound into spirals that formed the trabecular bars. All the crystallites in an ossicle appear to be aligned in the same direction. Geometric considerations indicate that the requirement for packing the crystallites smoothly may explain the high magnesium ion concentration of echinoderm calcite.  相似文献

针对某在役特高压电网GIS壳体焊缝发现的缺陷,引入缺陷断裂安全评定和疲劳评定方法。采用与原壳体相同的材料和焊接工艺制作的焊接试板,通过试验获得母材和焊缝试样的力学性能、疲劳裂纹扩展及断裂性能。采用GB/T 19624-2004《在用含缺陷压力容器安全评定》中的推荐方法,对壳体纵焊缝中两个最大缺陷进行断裂评定和疲劳评估。结果表明:该GIS壳体中的两个缺陷在当前工况下是安全的,按焊接试板测试的疲劳裂纹扩展速率估算,壳体左筒体缺陷的疲劳寿命循环次数为6 971次,壳体右筒体缺陷的疲劳寿命循环次数为37 915次,估算的疲劳寿命还有待于实践校验。建议在运行中特别关注缺陷疲劳扩展的状态监测,约5年后应进行无损检测,并与现缺陷对比,进行安全评定。评定结果与该设备投用以来的安全运行状态相符,说明,GB/T 19624-2004的评定方法可适用于高压电网GIS壳体的安全评定。  相似文献

Monolayer Langmuir-Blodgett films of a discotic mesogen have been studied with atomic force microscopy (AFM). These measurements confirm the "edge on" arrangement for the disk-shaped molecules suggested by surface pressure-area isotherms and show that the molecules form columns that are separated by 17.7 angstroms +/- 10 percent. Column alignment is found to be predominantly along the film deposition direction, with an angular spread of 35 degrees . The AFM images also show that the mean disk separation within the columns is 5.1 +/- 1.3 angstroms, in good agreement with x-ray diffraction (XRD) results. Roomtemperature XRD measurements on bulk samples of the same material indicate a disordered-hexagonal liquid crystalline mesophase, with a column-to-column spacing of 19.9 +/- 0.2 angstroms.  相似文献

Chondrulelike objects in short-period comet 81P/Wild 2   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
The Stardust spacecraft returned cometary samples that contain crystalline material, but the origin of the material is not yet well understood. We found four crystalline particles from comet 81P/Wild 2 that were apparently formed by flash-melting at a high temperature and are texturally, mineralogically, and compositionally similar to chondrules. Chondrules are submillimeter particles that dominate chondrites and are believed to have formed in the inner solar nebula. The comet particles show oxygen isotope compositions similar to chondrules in carbonaceous chondrites that compose the middle-to-outer asteroid belt. The presence of the chondrulelike objects in the comet suggests that chondrules have been transported out to the cold outer solar nebula and spread widely over the early solar system.  相似文献
