A case of angiokeratoma

Angiokeratoma is described by various authors as a rare variant of the hemangioma in the dog, characterized by a vascular component, like all types of vascular neoplasms, but also by an epithelial component. A case of angiokeratoma is described in a male 8-year-old dog. The tumor was located in heavily pigmented skin on the anterior surface of the front limb and not in the more usual previously described locations, eyelid and conjunctiva. Microscopic examination revealed a well-circumscribed mass with irregular hyperplasia of the epidermis and dilated vascular spaces filled with blood in the superficial dermis.     

Spontaneous resorption of a diabetic cataract in a geriatric dog

Spontaneous cataract resorption is described in a geriatric cocker spaniel with a four-month history of diabetes mellitus. Resorption progressed to such a degree that vision was restored in that eye and almost all the cataract material disappeared. This is not common in geriatric dogs despite having been described with relative frequency in young animals with hereditary cataracts.     

Apparent idiopathic interface disease in a Boer billy goat

An apparently idiopathic interface diseasee in a 2-year-old Boer billy goat is described. Clinical features of the disease were the presence of a pruritic multiple focally disseminated dermatitis with flat-topped, angular, scaly plaques and papules with corrugated surfaces in the skin of virtually the entire body. The aetiology of the disorder in the described case is unknown.     

Darier's sign associated with a cutaneous mast cell tumour in a cat with multiple neoplasms

A cutaneous mast cell tumour associated with Darier's sign in a cat with multiple neoplasms is described. A 14-year-old cat with multiple neoplasms, one of which was a mast cell tumour developed marked subcutaneous oedema and erythema following palpation. The phenomenon is similar to Darier's sign described in people with mast cell tumours. The pathology of the Darier's sign is discussed.     

Type III hemifacial microsomia in a kitten

The case described herein presented with craniofacial malformations resembling hemifacial microsomia (HFM), a congenital disorder described in humans. To our knowledge, this is the first reported case of HFM in a domestic cat.     

Haemophilia A (Factor VIII deficiency) in the cat

A case of haemophilia A (classical haemophilia, factor VIII deficiency) in a cat is described. The cat presented with persistent bleeding from an oral wound, and protracted haemorrhage after castration. The diagnosis and management of this case is described. Subsequent investigation of the dam and a recent litter identified a further affected male kitten.     

Thyroid hyperplasia and musculoskeletal deformity in a standardbred filly in Ontario

Thyroid hyperplasia and musculoskeletal deformity, described in foals in western Canada, has not been recognized as a common cause of neonatal foal mortality in Ontario. A case is reported from Ontario, with clinical and histopathological findings consistent with the syndrome described in western Canada.     

Three new Chromadoropsis species (Nematoda,Desmodoridae) from Southern Africa and the North Sea

Three new Chromadoropsis species with four pharyngeal bulbi are described from Southern Africa, Namibia (S.W.A.) and the North Sea. C. granulosus sp.nov. is described from a sandy beach near Port Elizabeth. This species is characterized by a very distinct layer of yellow granules just below the cuticle. C. namibiensis sp.nov. is described from a sandy beach at Langstrand, Namibia. This species can be distinguished by the length and shape of the gubernaculum and spicules as well as the size of the capitulum. C. longispiculosa sp.nov. is described from the North Sea and is characterized by the long spicules and the presence of numerous porids. The genus Chromadoropsis Filipjev, 1918 is revised.     

The use of intraluminal stents for tracheal collapse in two horses: Case management and long‐term treatment

Tracheal collapse is an uncommon clinical disorder in horses but when present can be difficult to correct. Various medical and surgical procedures to correct tracheal collapse have been described in horses with variable success. Recently, the use of an intraluminal stent has been described as a treatment for tracheal collapse in a miniature horse. The long‐term management, utilising intraluminal stents, in 2 miniature horses with tracheal collapse is presented here. In particular, various complications as a result of intraluminal stent placement are described, the most persistent being the formation of granulation tissue at various regions of the stents. Multiple methods of combating granulation tissue in this situation also are discussed.     

Novel perineal approach for repair of a urethrorectal fistula in a bulldog

A urethrorectal fistula was diagnosed in a 10-week-old, intact male bulldog, presented with a history of urine dribbling from his anus. The fistula was ligated using a novel perineal approach, resulting in resolution of clinical signs. The described procedure is simpler and less invasive than previously described repairs.     

Juvenile nephropathy in a Weimaraner dog

A case of juvenlle nephropathy In a two-year-old Welmaraner bitch Is reported. Although juvenlle nephropathy has been described in several breeds of dogs, this is the first report In a Welmaraner. Clinical aspects, blood analysis, renal pathology and extrarenal changes are described. The renal changes consisted of tubular as well as glomerular lesions, similar to those described in the miniature schnauzer. The main extrarenal lesion was degeneration and necrosis of subendocardial myocytes in the left atrial wail associated with an inflammatory reaction and focal necrotising arteritis.     

Cardioversion of atrial fibrillation in a dog with structural heart disease using an esophageal-right atrial lead configuration

Atrial fibrillation is a common arrhythmia in dogs with structural cardiac disease and can result in significant clinical signs. Several methods of electrical cardioversion of atrial fibrillation have been described. Biphasic transthoracic cardioversion of atrial fibrillation in dogs with naturally occurring heart disease has been described in veterinary medicine and has been shown to be highly successful. In humans and research animals intracardiac and transesophageal cardioversion of atrial fibrillation has been described as an alternative to transthoracic cardioversion. While transesophageal cardioversion is very successful in humans and research animals, this technique has not been previously described in a clinical patient with naturally occurring heart disease in veterinary medicine. This report describes the use of transesophageal cardioversion in a dog with atrial fibrillation and structural cardiac disease. Cardioversion was unsuccessful using two electrodes positioned within the esophagus. Cardioversion of atrial fibrillation to normal sinus rhythm was successfully achieved and maintained using one electrode positioned within the esophagus and one electrode positioned within the right atrium using a synchronized monophasic shock of 50 J.     

Protein-Losing Enteropathy in a Dog

Abstract— —A protein-losing enteropathy in a dog is described. There was a history of chronic gastrointestinal upset and examination revealed hypoproteinaemic oedema and ascites. Antemortem laboratory findings indicated a protein-losing enteropathy and these, together with the results of clinical and necropsy examination, are described.     

IMAGING DIAGNOSIS—TRACHEOBRONCHIAL ZYGOMYCOSIS IN A CAT

Tracheobronchial zygomycosis is described in a cat with acute dyspnea. Zygomycetes are an uncommon opportunistic group of pathogens, and few examples have been described in feline patients. Radiographic, ultrasonographic, and computed tomography imaging allowed identification of tracheobronchial masses, with intraluminal and peribronchial involvement. Surgical removal was impossible and antifungal chemotherapy was ineffective. Feline zygomycosis is a serious condition that should be considered when tracheobronchial masses are identified.     

Subtotal colectomy by rectal pull-through for treatment of idiopathic megacolon in 2 cats

Surgical management of idiopathic megacolon is described in 2 cats by a rectal pull-through with subtotal colectomy performed outside of the abdomen. This newly described technique facilitates access to the rectum for suturing an anastamosis without the need for pubic osteotomy and with minimal risk of abdominal contamination.     

Dermatosis associated with Listrophorus gibbus in the rabbit

A dermatosis associated with Listrophorus gibbus, a pelage mite, is described in the rabbit. The case details of four domestic rabbits are described including diagnostic investigations, treatment, and successful recovery.     

Use of grid keratotomy for the treatment of indolent corneal ulcer in a llama

A case of indolent corneal ulcer in a llama (Llama glama) is described. Diagnostic testing included a complete ophthalmic examination with corneal cytologic and histopathologic examination. Successful management involved grid keratotomy and topical application of neomycin-polymixin-bacitracin and atropine 1% ointments. Weekly follow-up examinations are described until healing was considered complete.     

Hereditary cataract in the German Shepherd Dog

Primary hereditary cataract is recorded and described in the German Shepherd Dog in the United Kingdom. The cataract is not congenital, it is bilateral and progressive to a certain point and is unassociated with any other ocular abnormality. It is due to an autosomal, recessive gene. The cataract is compared to that described by von Hippel in Germany in 1930 which was congenital and non-progressive and due to a dominant gene. The two types of cataract are therefore dissimilar.     

Use of an autogenous cancellous bone graft in the treatment of subchondral bone cysts in the medial femoral condyle of the horse

The clinical features, diagnosis and radiological findings of eight cases of a subchondral bone cyst involving the medial condyle of the femur are described. Surgical treatment, which comprised performing an arthrotomy of the femorotibial joint, curetting and packing the cystic cavity with an autogenous cancellous bone graft, is described.     

Clinical management of the feline urological syndrome

The management of cases of the feline urological syndrome (FUS) is described with particular reference to urethral obstruction in the male cat. Treatment of the obstructive episode and in the post–obstruction period and the prevention of recurrence of blockage in the longer term are discussed and a technique for perineal urethrostomy described.
