Cannibalism is one of the main causes of mortality in the culture of the mud crab Scylla paramamosain, particularly in the early post‐larval and juvenile stages when the densities of hatchery‐reared crabs may be very high before stocking into ponds or release into the wild for stock enhancement. In a series of experiments investigating cannibalism mitigation, the influence of stocking density, the effectiveness of sand substrate, brick and shell shelters and feed type were compared in culture of crabs from instar 1 for short nursery periods of 15–30 days. Inclusion of brick and shell shelters significantly increased survival over sand substrate alone. However, inclusion of shelters did not affect growth rates. In scaled‐up nursery production in lined‐ponds, with shelters, live Artemia biomass and fresh chopped shrimp or tilapia were found to be equally effective feeds for juvenile crabs stocked at a density of 70 m−2 from instar 1 and grown for 30 days [52–66% survival, 21.6–24.6 mm carapace width (CW)]. In an extended nursery period for a further 30 days, crabs of 22 mm CW, stocked at 30 m−2 in the same ponds, attained a final size of 34.5–36.2 mm CW with a survival of 64.3–67.0% using the same feeds.  相似文献

Losses of king crabs (deaths) in massive rearing conditions are frequently attributed to cannibalism. As several factors could influence cannibalism intensity during culture, the aim of the present study was to determine the effect of molt condition, stage and density on cannibalism among Lithodes santolla juveniles. Comparisons between intermolt and molt conditions and between C1 and C2 stages during intermolt were performed at three densities (6, 12 and 18 individuals per flask; that is equivalent to 236, 472 and 708 individuals m?2). After 16 days of juvenile coexistence, cannibalism (injured + dead) was higher during molting (33.9 ± 4.5 %) than intermolt (21.7 ± 3.9 %), even though only 36 % of crabs had molted. Although cannibalism was similar in C1 and C2 stages, the proportion of dead animals was higher by a factor of three in C1 stage, probably due to the fact that animals reach the first juvenile stage with low energetic reserves, after the lecithotrophic larval development. Density was the main factor influencing cannibalism in our experiments. Higher densities promoted higher deaths, while agonistic interactions evidenced by injured crabs remained constant. Walking appendages were lost more often than chelipeds during first agonistic encounters. We recommend the use of intermediate densities (450 crabs m?2 at most), the early detection of exuviae and the sorting of crabs after molting, for L. santolla rearing.  相似文献

Manipulation of stocking densities (10, 20, 30, 40 and 50 larvae L?1), each with or without the presence of shelter was conducted to determine the effects on survival, cannibalism and growth performances of larval bagrid catfish Mystus nemurus (Valenciennes 1840) from 2 to 14 days after hatching. This study revealed that stocking density significantly affected survival, cannibalism, total length, feed intake, specific growth rate and final weight of bagrid catfish larvae. Significantly higher survival was observed at moderate stocking density of more than 20 but less than 50 larvae L?1. Survival was significantly low beyond this threshold and was the lowest at 10 larvae L?1, coincides with the highest cannibalism. Total length, feed intake, specific growth rate and final weight were significantly higher at 10 larvae L?1. Shelter significantly improved total length and feed intake. No significant effects of stocking density and shelter were observed on the apparent feed conversion ratio and coefficient of variation. There was also no significant interaction between stocking density and shelter in all parameters. This study suggests that bagrid catfish larvae could be cultured at more than 20 but less than 50 larvae L?1 with the availability of shelter for optimal larviculture condition.  相似文献

Depending on the initial stocking density, ocellate puffer larvae exhibit the cannibalism that resulted in high mortality. We aimed to clarify the relationship between stocking density of larvae, mortality, and the effect of density on cannibalism. Ocellate puffer larvae were reared at five different stocking densities between 5 and 25 larvae/L with duplicate 1‐m3 tank for each treatment. Larvae were stocked at 0 d after hatch (d.a.h.), and the experimental cultures lasted for 55 d. In larvae stocked initially at more than 10 larvae/L, cannibalism was evident from 11 to 17 d.a.h., and the survival rate at 55 d.a.h. was less than 15%. The survival rate was 25.5% at 5 larvae/L, and cannibalism was observed from 31 to 32 d.a.h. Consequently, an initial density of 5 larvae/L was the most efficient in terms of survival and the prevention of cannibalism. On the other hand, when cannibalism is still observed at 5 larvae/L, it is necessary to lower the stocking density before the onset of cannibalism.  相似文献

The effect of initial fish size (small with TL = 40.3 ± 2.3 mm and W = 0.42 ± 0.15 g, medium with TL = 56.2 ± 2.7 mm and W = 1.66 ± 0.4 g, and big with TL = 71.0 ± 3.2 mm and W = 2.95 ± 0.65 g) and stocking density of identical fish with TL = 40.3 ± 2.3 mm and W = 0.42 ± 0.15 g (1; 2; 4; 8 fish l?1) on weaning success was evaluated in pond-cultured pikeperch. The trial was divided into weaning (12 days) and post-weaning (16 days) periods. Small juveniles reached significantly higher specific growth rate (SGR = 1.6 ± 0.2 % day?1) and survival rate (S = 81.7 ± 2.7 %) and lower cannibalism (C = 3.0 ± 0.75 %) compared to medium and large juveniles (SGR = 0.3–0.5 % day?1, S = 65.3–76.5 %, C = 6.5–7.5 %) during the weaning period. The higher survival rate was found at the two higher densities (S = 72.0–79.1 %) during the weaning period. The lowest survival rate (S = 38.9 ± 2.7) was observed at the lowest fish density. Fish stocking density did not affect growth, condition, or cannibalism rate during the weaning period. Similar trends of growth, survival, and cannibalism of weaned juveniles were observed during the post-weaning period. A mass weaning trial verified experimental results showing small pikeperch juveniles to reach satisfactory growth rate (SGR = 1.4 ± 0.1 and 7.2 ± 0.2 % day?1), survival (S = 78.7 ± 3.0 % and 97.6 ± 1.0 %), and cannibalism (C = 4.0 ± 1.5 % and 2.5 ± 1.0 %) rates during the weaning and post-weaning periods. No body or fin deformities of weaned juveniles were observed.  相似文献

Abstract.— Filial cannibalism has been identified as a constraint to the intensive production of swordtails Xiphophorus helleri . The objective of this study was to quantify the effect of refuge availability and quantity, broodstock population density, and adult sex-ratio on the rate of cannibalism under culture conditions. The availability of shelter had a significant effect on the number of harvestable juveniles, while the quantity of shelter did not affect harvest size. At a constant sex-ratio of 1:1 and broodstock population densities of four, ten, and 16 fish per 300-L tank the amount of juveniles harvested was lowest at the stocking density of four fish per tank, but did not increase significantly when stocking density was raised from ten to 16 fish per tank. Rate of cannibalism was lowest at the lowest population density. At a constant stocking density of ten fish per tank and sex-ratios of 1:1, 1:4, and 4:1 (male: female), the highest number of juveniles was obtained at a social structure of two males and eight females. Rate of cannibalism was independent of sex-ratio, indicating that males and females are equally cannibalistic. These results suggest that the 300-L broodstock tanks should be stocked with a maximum of two males and between five and eight females to obtain the greatest number of harvestable juveniles per tank.  相似文献

This study was carried out in order to determine the effect of stocking density and size distribution on growth, survival and cannibalism of fat snook (Centropomus parallelus Poey) juveniles. Three stocking densities (1.5, 3 and 6 fish L−1) were tested in two groups of fish: homogeneous [total length (TL)=22.1 mm; coefficient of variation of length (CV)=8%] and heterogeneous (TL=22.7 mm; CV=15%). The experimental design was factorial (3 × 2) using triplicates. Fish were reared for 30 days in 80‐L circular tanks with an open flow‐through system. There was no significant interaction between the two factors (density and size distribution). The highest cannibalism rate (14.2%) was observed in the heterogeneous group, which also had a significantly higher growth rate (TL=45.6 mm) than the homogeneous group (3.2% and TL=40.9 mm). Significant differences were found between the two lowest densities and the highest density (6.2%, 6.3% and 13.4% respectively). Growth was not affected by fish density. Cannibalism was the main cause of mortality. In 90% of the occurrences, whole prey ingestion was observed. According to the results obtained, cannibalism was positively correlated to density, although size grading of fat snook juveniles is recommended to control cannibalism in all the densities tested.  相似文献

Abstract.— A 12-wk experiment was conducted to test the effects of 50, 100, 200, and 300% stocking densities (ventral fish area to bottom tank area ratio) on growth, survival, and aggressive behavior in 2-moold juvenile winter flounder Pseudopleuronectes americanus . Over the course of the experiment, there were no differences ( P > 0.05) in growth between treatments at any given week. Survival decreased in all treatments over time, however, proportionately more fish died in the high (200 and 300%) density treatments. At the end of 12 wk, the 300% treatment had significantly lower survival ( P < 0.05). There were no differences in the degree of caudal fin damage between any of the treatments ( P > 0.05) suggesting that aggressive behavior. such as fin nipping, was not affected by stocking density. However, fish size was inversely related to caudal fin damage. When fish were sorted by length, the two smallest size categories (<2 cm and 2-3 cm) suffered the greatest fin nipping compared to each other ( P < 0.001) and all larger size categories ( P < 0.001). These results indicate that 50 to 300% stocking densities do not affect growth or aggressive behavior in juvenile winter flounder. Although survival was affected by density, the final yield (weight per treatment) at higher densities was still greater than at lower densities. Our hatchery recommendations are to stock at ≥200% but to monitor fish health carefully. Size grading should be employed to minimize aggression between fish size classes.  相似文献

Abstract. The growth and survival of Clarias gariepinus (Burchell) fry was investigated at high stocking density. Significant increases in mean fry weight, and concomitant significant decreases in specific growth rate, were recorded over successive 5-day periods. Fry growth was negatively density dependent. Fry survival was in excess of 90% in all treatments. Increasing stocking density between 50 and 150 fish/l altered the pattern of mortality; non-cannibalistic deaths decreased significantly with increasing stocking density though cannibalism did not significantly increase. Periods of weaning fish onto larger feed particles were associated with temporarily increased rates of cannibalism.  相似文献

The performance (growth and survival) of diploid and triploid jundia, Rhamdia quelen, was evaluated at six different stocking densities (10, 60, 110, 160, 210, 260 larvae/liter) during 31 days after rearing in an intensive larviculture system. Triploid fish exhibited a significantly higher survival rate than diploids at all stocking densities (27.1 ± 4.3% vs. 12.1 ± 3.3%; P < 0.01). Survival was not affected by stocking density (P > 0.05). Length gain was not affected by either ploidy or stocking density. Diploid fish gained more weight than triploids (P < 0.05), though this difference could result from lower fish densities in diploid treatments resulting from the higher mortality rate of diploid fish. This hypothesis is strengthened by the higher biomass present in triploid treatments (P < 0.01).  相似文献

The lined seahorse, Hippocampus erectus (Perry), is an important species in both medicinal and aquarium trades. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of stocking density (1, 3 and 5 individuals L−1) on the growth performance and survival of the early-stage juvenile H. erectus. The height (HT), wet weight, weight gain (WG) and specific growth rate (SGR) were affected significantly by the stocking density during the 40-day study. The HT, WG and SGR of the seahorse at 1 and 3 juveniles L−1 were significantly higher than that at 5 juveniles L−1. The survival of juveniles at the three stocking densities was not significantly different at day 25 (90.3 ± 4.5%, 86.7 ± 4.2% and 86.2 ± 3.8% for 1, 3 and 5 juveniles L−1 respectively), but was significantly different at day 40 (87.8 ± 3.9%, 69.6 ± 4.2% and 52.9 ± 2.8% for 1, 3 and 5 juveniles L−1 respectively). For the early-stage juvenile H. erectus, we recommend a stocking density of 3 juveniles L−1, but the density should be reduced to 1–2 juveniles L−1 to avoid reduced and variable growth and high mortality after 25 days.  相似文献

The stress responses in early growth stages of the wedge sole have been studied to determine whether the high cortisol levels described in juvenile fish are present from early developmental stages. Whole‐body cortisol, glucose and lactate contents, as well as biometric parameters in wedge sole larvae were measured at three different stocking densities. Stocking density affected growth‐related variables significantly, and larvae in lower stocking densities grew faster. Survival did not significantly differ among treatments. At hatching, the whole‐body cortisol concentration was 0.33 ± 0.01 ng g?1 and varied significantly from 0 to 30 days after hatching (DAH) for each stocking density, though values remained stable for the remaining time in the low‐stocking density group. These hormone levels rose significantly (5.17 ± 2.43 to 22.10 ± 4.95 ng g?1) at the end of the experiment, depending directly on the stocking density. Glucose and lactate‐body concentrations did not vary among treatments. We conclude that the stress responses of wedge sole larvae are detectable from 45 DAH and that stocking density already can be a stressor at that age. As described for juvenile stage, cortisol content values in wedge sole larvae under non‐stressful conditions are one of the highest among those reported in the literature. The captivity conditions could be responsible for this apparently stressful situation, though those values also could be normal in wild specimens.

Effects of size grading and stocking density on growth and survival of 3.5‐month‐old signal crayfish (Pacifastacus leniusculus Dana) juveniles were investigated in a 3 × 2 factorial design with size group (small, large and mixed) and stocking density (25 and 200 individuals m?2) as factors for 90 days. Carapace length and wet weight growth of the juveniles were affected by the presence or absence of other size groups, stocking density and animal size. All factors had statistically significant interactions, which make the interpretation of the results more complicated. The smaller crayfish grew faster in the absence of large animals and larger animals benefited from the presence of smaller cospecies. Increasing density decreased the growth in length and weight. Survival (82–100%) was good in all groups. Subsequently, the within population dynamics was studied by selectively removing the largest individuals (selectively removing (SR) group). Effects on growth and survival of the remaining juveniles were evaluated on 6‐month‐old P. leniusculus juveniles reared in plastic tanks (100 juveniles m?2) for 122 days. Size distribution manipulation was performed at days 34 and 70. Juveniles in SR group grew significantly faster in comparison with a control group (RR), from which juveniles were removed randomly. Also, the survival rate was significantly higher in the SR group than in the RR group. In conclusion, size grading of juvenile P. leniusculus either at the start of the experiment or repeatedly during the experiment increased growth performance of smaller animals in length and weight.  相似文献

The effects of tank bottom substrates and presence of shelter on growth, survival and condition of cheliped in the juvenile (stage 2) signal crayfish, Pacifastacus leniusculus (Dana), with an initial stocking density of 200 individuals m?2 were investigated. In the first trial, three different tank bottom substrates with or without shelter were used. The three bottom types were loose gravel, glued gravel and bare bottom. The fastest growth both in terms of wet weight and carapace length was observed on loose gravel bottom. Also survival (range 30.1% to 49.8%) was affected by bottom type being higher on gravel bottoms than on bare bottom. Shelter improved survival only on loose gravel bottom. Bottom type influenced also the number of animals with cheliped injuries. The highest proportion of animals with no injuries (59.5%) was found on bare bottom and the proportion was about 12% and 13% units less on loose gravel and on glued gravel bottom. The presence of shelter had a marginal probability in increasing the number of animals without injuries. In the second trial, the substitution of ordinary gravel as tank bottom substrate with crushed limestone was studied. The mean final wet weights were 0.517 g on ordinary gravel bottom and 0.481 g on limestone bottom. The survivals were about 74% and 80% respectively. Limestone bottom decreased marginally final wet weight, and increased survival but did not affect the final carapace length that had a mean value of 13.6 mm. We conclude from the present experiments that the type of tanks and the rearing system used supported good growth of juvenile signal crayfish. The best growth results could be obtained by using loose gravel (or loose limestone) on the bottom of the tanks with a sufficient quantity of hiding places. However, there appears to be an increased risk for cheliped injuries on bottoms with loose materials.  相似文献

The shore crab Carcinus maenas is a commercially important species, utilised as sea angling bait as well as supporting a European-wide fishery. Hatchery production could provide an alternative source of bait crabs, alleviating potential competition between these sectors and environmental concerns regarding bait collection practices. A series of experiments were carried to investigate the potential for hatchery production, focusing on effects of dietary regimes and stocking densities through the zoeal stages and the influence of tank substrates and stocking density during the megalopa stage. Inclusion of the rotifer Brachionus plicatilis as live food for early larval stages conveyed no advantage in terms of survival or rate of development compared to a diet of Artemia nauplii. Increasing zoea stocking densities (from 94 to 557 l−1) had a significantly negative effect upon survival to the megalopa stage (from 75% down to 47%), although this was off-set by a significant increase in production, with 260 megalopae−1 produced from an initial density of 557 zoeae l−1. The inclusion of substrates for megalopa stages had no impact on production or development rate, compared to tanks with no substrate. The completely benthic behaviour of megalopae indicates that tank floor area will be a limiting factor for crab production. Increasing stocking density of megalopae was found to significantly and negatively influence survival, although above 10,000 megalopae m−2 the rate of decline in survival stabilised and maximum production (3,114 juveniles m−2) of juvenile crabs could be achieved at the highest stocking densities tested (40,000 m−2).  相似文献

Three experiments were carried out to separately investigate the effects of stocking density (1.0, 2.0, 4.0 and 8.0 larvae ml?1), diet (Isochrysis zhanjiangensis, Chlorella spp., Nannochloropsis oculata, 50 % I. zhanjiangensis/50 % Chlorella spp. and 50 % I. zhanjiangensis/50 % N. oculata), and water exchange (25 % once every other day and 25, 50 and 100 % once daily) on growth and survival of pearl oyster Pinctada maxima larvae. Results showed that there existed significant effects of stocking density, diet, and water exchange on the growth of pearl oyster larvae (P < 0.05). Larval survival was significantly affected by stocking density and diet (P < 0.05), but not by water exchange (P > 0.05). Larval growth decreased significantly with increasing stocking density (P < 0.05). A density of 1.0–4.0 larvae ml?1 was optimal for larval growth of pearl oyster. Chlorella spp. and N. oculata could replace 50 % of I. zhanjiangensis as a food source for the pearl oyster larvae without affecting growth and survival. A water exchange of 25 % once daily provided optimum larval growth and survival.  相似文献

Pond-nursed pike-perch (Sander lucioperca) fry were trained to artificial diet and reared under controlled conditions maintained in aquaria using three stocking densities (1.25, 1.66 and 2.08 g/l). Two replicates per treatment were applied. The survival during the 4-week period of the experiment ranged from 44.2 to 49.6%. The majority of the losses were caused by cannibalism; only 8–14% could be attributed to natural mortality. Both cannibalism and natural mortality occurred in the first 2–3 weeks of rearing. The differences in the rate of cannibalism were independent of the stocking density. Natural mortality decreased with increasing density, consequently the highest survival was observed under the highest stocking density. Stocking density did not significantly influence growth, feed consumption and feed conversion ratio of the pike-perch fingerlings (p < 0.05).  相似文献

Development of Nursery Systems for Black Sea Bass Centropristis striata   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Black sea bass (Centropristis striata) are territorial fish and cannibalism is a concern when rearing juveniles in intensive systems. Three studies were conducted to provide information for development of suitable tank nursery systems for juvenile black sea bass (3.6–4.5 cm; 0.8–1.7 g). Studies were performed at the Marine Resources Research Institute, Charleston, SC, using 1.5‐m diameter × 0.8 m deep tanks connected to recirculating seawater systems. The studies examined growth and survival at different stocking densities, selection and utilization of habitats, and, effects of water velocity on positioning and movement of fish. In study 1, fish were stocked at biomass densities of 126.7, 253.3, and 506.7 Wm3 and reared for 56 days with no habitats. No difference in growth was detected although fish reared at the lower densities had significantly lower mortality (mean 7.9%) as compared to those at the highest density (28.0%). At the highest density, cannibalism appeared to be a substantial cause of mortality. In study 2, three habitat types were used, (1) two‐tier structure constructed from plastic grating with 15 mm square openings (volume = 0.015 m3); (2) PVC pipe bundle (volume = 0.004 m3); (3) rock aggregate (volume = 0.008 m3). Of the habitats, the most utilized habitat (62.9%) was the two‐tier layered structure that allowed movement in all directions. The next utilized type was the pipe bundle (25.6%) with the openings inhabited by the largest juveniles in each tank. Overall, a mean of 18.2% of the fish were observed using habitats. Study 3 examined water velocities ranging from 0.01 to 0.12 m/sec. Most fish became concentrated in the tank bottom area having a water velocity in the range of 0.040.09 m/sec. At these velocities there were few aggressive interactions. Smaller fish inhabited the areas outside this velocity range. At the higher velocities, the small fish swam vigorously to maintain their position in the water column. At the low velocities, sporadic incursions of larger fish occurred presumably to attempt to cannibalize or to defend territory. Results from these studies help to define characteristics of nursery systems for rearing juvenile black sea bass.  相似文献
