A retrospective review of case records of ultrasonography and necropsy outcomes of 62 koalas was used to investigate the accuracy of ultrasonography in assessing koala urogenital tract structural disease at the Port Macquarie Koala Hospital. The results showed high concordance, supporting ultrasonography as an effective tool for evaluating structural disease of the koala urogenital tract, most commonly seen with chlamydiosis. The study also illustrates the advances benefiting animal welfare that can be made by wildlife carer groups through using a scientific, evidence‐based approach.  相似文献

Complex interactions between Chlamydia pecorum infection, the immune response and disease exist in the koala. We used quantitative polymerase chain reaction to investigate the relationship between C. pecorum infectious load and ocular and urogenital tract disease. Chlamydia pecorum shedding was generally higher in animals with chronic, active disease than in animals with inactive disease. The absence of ocular disease was generally associated with low levels of shedding, but relatively high levels of shedding in the urogenital tract were detected in some koalas without clinical disease signs. These results suggest a complex disease pathogenesis and clinical course in C. pecorum-infected koalas.  相似文献

The contribution of vagino-urethrography to the diagnosis of disorders of the lower urogenital tract in 123 bitches was evaluated. It was found to be particularly valuable in animals with urinary incontinence, vaginal discharge, dysuria and physical vaginal abnormalities. Determination of vaginal volume in 69 bitches has enabled a dosage of contrast medium to be suggested.  相似文献

The study compares the efficiency of a new bone fixator combining periostal and intramedullary osteosynthesis to bone plating in treatment of tibial fractures in sheep. Experimental osteotomies were performed in the middle third of the left tibia. Animals were divided into two groups: in one group (four animals) combined osteosynthesis (rod‐through‐plate fixator, RTP fixator) was applied, and in the other group (three animals) bone plating was used. The experiments lasted for 10 weeks during which fracture union was followed by radiography, and the healing process was studied by blood serum markers reflecting bone turnover and by histological and immunohistochemical investigations. In the RTP fixator group, animals started to load body weight on the operated limbs the next day after the surgery, while in the bone plating group, this happened only on the seventh day. In the RTP fixator group, consolidation of fractures was also faster, as demonstrated by radiographical, histological, and immunohistochemical investigations and in part by blood serum markers for bone formation. It can be concluded that application of RTP fixation is more efficient than plate fixation in the treatment of experimental osteotomies of long bones in sheep.  相似文献

Linear-circular hybrid fixators were used to stabilize humeral and femoral fractures in 21 dogs and five cats. Twenty-two of 24 fractures with sufficient follow-up radiographic evaluation obtained union. Time to radiographic union ranged from 25 to 280 days (mean +/- standard deviation [SD] 110+/-69 days; median 98 days). Eleven animals developed minor and two dogs developed major pin and/or wire tract inflammation. Functional outcome was rated as excellent (n=16), good (n=5), and fair (n=3) at the time of final long-term assessment (range 4.5 to 60.0 months; mean +/- SD 28.4+/-15.4 months; median 28.5 months). Follow-up information was unavailable for two animals. Hybrid fixators were useful constructs for stabilization of humeral and femoral fractures, particularly fractures with short, juxta-articular fracture segments.  相似文献

Minipigs have become popular pets in recent years. Therefore, an increasing number of veterinarians are being challenged by specific problems of these animals. This retrospective study gives an overview on the diagnoses and therapeutic interventions of the patients submitted to the clinic for swine at the University of Veterinary Medicine Vienna during the last 6 years (n=48). Most frequently, colic symptoms of the gastro-intestinal tract (n=12) and orthopaedic locomotion disorders (n=10), mainly due to accidents or long claws, could be observed, followed by urogenital tract and skin disorders (n=4 each). Therapeutic interventions are discussed with regard to medical aspects as well as statutory provisions.  相似文献

Ghrelin is involved in many biological processes, ranging from appetite regulation and the release of growth hormone to the regulation of gastrointestinal motility and secretion processes. Ghrelin expression is not homogenously distributed throughout the gastrointestinal tract; expression is species-specific and can also depend on the animal age. This study was performed to investigate ghrelin immunolocalization in the gastrointestinal tract of pigs at different ages: 1 day (birth), 28 days (weaning), 2 months, 4 months, and 7 months (pre-puberty). Tissue samples were collected along the entire gastrointestinal tract and were examined by immunohistochemistry and double-immunofluorescence. Histometry was performed by counting the number of endocrine ghrelin immunopositive cells in the gastrointestinal mucosa. Ghrelin was found to be present along the swine alimentary canal from the stomach to the caecum. In all regions of the alimentary canal of the animals studied, ghrelin-immunoreactive (IR) cells co-localized with chromogranin-A and were therefore identified as endocrine cells. In the gastric fundus, ghrelin-immunoreactivity was partially detected in co-localization with H-K-adenosine triphosphatase and pepsinogen. Ghrelin-IR endocrine cells were abundant in the oxyntic mucosa but less present in the small intestine and rare in the large intestine. The cell density of the ghrelin-IR endocrine cells was lowest in the oxyntic mucosa of 1-day-old pigs. We can conclude that gastric ghrelin expression is not related merely to age but could also potentially be influenced by food intake.  相似文献

Standing female urogenital endoscopic surgery is facilitated by the more dorsal location of the organs of the female reproduction tract. The most common reason for laparoscopic surgery on the female urogenital system is ovariectomy; however, the technique has been used to diagnose periparturient or reproductive diseases and to perform surgical embryo transfer. Standing surgical approaches avoid the risk and expense of general anesthesia, but these techniques are limited by the temperament and size of the patient and the availability of facilities for restraint. Owner acceptance of laparoscopic procedures is excellent. It is anticipated that standing endoscopic surgery may become the preferred technique for applicable procedures.  相似文献

The aim of the present study was to reveal the characteristic features of genital Chlamydia suis infection and re-infection in female pigs by studying the immune response, pathological changes, replication of chlamydial bacteria in the genital tract and excretion of viable bacteria. Pigs were intravaginally infected and re-infected with C. suis strain S45, the type strain of this species. We demonstrated that S45 is pathogenic for the female urogenital tract. Chlamydia replication occurred throughout the urogenital tract, causing inflammation and pathology. Furthermore, genital infection elicited both cellular and humoral immune responses. Compared to the primo-infection of pigs with C. suis, re-infection was characterized by less severe macroscopic lesions and less chlamydial elementary bodies and inclusions in the urogenital tract. This indicates the development of a certain level of protection following the initial infection. Protective immunity against re-infection coincided with higher Chlamydia-specific IgG and IgA antibody titers in sera and vaginal secretions, higher proliferative responses of peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC), higher percentages of blood B lymphocytes, monocytes and CD8+ T cells and upregulated production of IFN-γ and IL-10 by PBMC.

A male miniature rough-haired dachshund, presented with episodic haematuria, was found to be a female pseudohermaphrodite. A littermate also had an abnormality of the urogenital tract and their dam had received a progesterone implant during pregnancy. Records from 20 animals (13 dogs, seven cats) with Candida spp. urinary tract infections were reviewed. Six Candida spp. were isolated; Candida albicans was the most common isolate. Concurrent diseases or nonantifungal drugs administered within 1 month of isolation included antibiotics (n=16), corticosteroids (n=6), diabetes mellitus (n=4), nonurogenital neoplasia (n=3), and noncandidal urogenital disease (n=14). All animals had sources of local or systemic immune compromise that likely predisposed to infection. Of five animals with resolution of infection, three did not receive specific antifungal treatment. The authors conclude that correction of predisposing conditions is likely critical for management of Candida spp. urinary tract infection.  相似文献

Slaughterhouse sampling and examination of urogenital tracts of 499 sows and gilts culled for reproductive reasons from 21 Hungarian herds were performed over a 6-year period. The aim was to estimate the prevalence of different urogenital tract lesions, and to provide sensitivity and specificity estimates for macroscopic and bacteriological examinations in the diagnosis of urocystitis and endometritis. Furthermore, the association between endometritis and urocystitis was assessed. The prevalence of main lesions of the urogenital tract was similar to that reported in other studies. The 'sensitivity' of macroscopic and bacteriological methods was determined statistically by taking histopathology as the 'Gold Standard'. As a result, the 'sensitivity' of macroscopic methods for the diagnosis of endometritis and urocystitis was < or = 18.1% and 47.9%, respectively, while the 'sensitivity' of bacteriology for the diagnosis of the same conditions was < or = 31.8% and 63.0%, respectively. The presumed positive association between urocystitis and endometritis was confirmed; it was not confounded by parity. Animals affected by urocystitis had a 3.5 times higher odds to simultaneously have endometritis than animals without urocystitis.  相似文献

Growth deformities of the long bones are usually caused by premature closure of the physis. The most commonly affected bones are the radius, ulna, and tibia. Premature closure of the physis can result in shortened, angular, and rotational bone deformities, especially when one bone of a paired bone system like the radius and ulna is affected. Adjacent joints may develop osteoarthritis. Corrective osteotomy to realign in joint surfaces is indicated in mature animals. Bilateral or type II external fixation frames are used to stabilize the osteotomies. The advantages of ESF are: (1) The transfixation pins can be used as guide pins to realign joints. (2) The fixation allows rigid stabilization of the osteotomy site. (3) Postoperative correction of alignment can be achieved. (4) Implant removal after bone union is simple.  相似文献

Otarine Herpesvirus-1 (OtHV-1) is a gammaherpesvirus routinely detected in urogenital tumor tissues of adult sea lions dying during rehabilitation, To investigate the epidemiology of this virus and guide the development of a mathematical model of its role in the multifactorial etiology of cancer in California sea lions, polymerase chain reaction (PCR) amplification of an OtHV-1 specific fragment of the DNA polymerase gene was used to look for evidence of OtHV-1 infection in urogenital and pharyngeal swabs and peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC) of sea lions of different ages. Samples were also examined from pregnant females and their late term in utero or aborted fetuses to investigate potential for vertical transmission. Prevalence of infection in 72 adult females was 22%, whereas it was 46% in 52 adult males, and was significantly lower in 120 juvenile animals (6%). OtHV-1 DNA was most often detected in the lower reproductive tract of the adult animals, especially the males, and rarely in the pharynx or urogenital tract of juvenile animals. These data suggest sexual transmission may an important route of transmission. Additional studies are required to confirm this mode of transmission. Additionally, the virus was detected in a single prematurely born pup, suggesting the possibility of perinatal transmission. No indication of a PBMC associated viremia was evident in adults using standard PCR or in juveniles using standard and real time PCR.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To determine indications for cystostomy tube use in dogs and cats, complications associated with their use, and outcome of dogs and cats in which cystostomy tubes had been inserted. DESIGN: Retrospective case series. ANIMALS: 37 dogs and 39 cats. PROCEDURES: Information was obtained from medical records. Long-term follow-up information was obtained by use of a client questionnaire. RESULTS: Indications for cystostomy tube placement were bladder dysfunction, urinary tract rupture, obstructive urinary tract neoplasia, urinary diversion following urogenital surgery, obstructive urolithiasis, and feline lower urinary tract disease. Median time tubes were in place was 11 days, but duration of tube use was significantly longer for animals with bladder dysfunction than for animals with urinary tract trauma, urinary diversion, or urinary tract obstruction. Thirty-seven (49%) animals had tube complications. Development of complications was not significantly associated with species, age, body weight, duration of tube use, or tube type, except that animals were significantly more likely to develop complications following long-rather than short-term use. In 42 animals, the underlying condition resolved and the tube was removed; 22 animals died or were euthanatized with the tube in place. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Results suggested that cystostomy tubes may be used for animals with various conditions related to problems with urine outflow. Nearly half the animals in the study developed complications related to the cystostomy tube, suggesting that potential complications should be discussed with owners prior to tube placement. However, most complications were easily resolved.  相似文献

Standing laparoscopy in the horse was used initially as a diagnostic tool to assist in the diagnosis of a cryptorchid testicle. Now, this technique is also used for treatment of cryptorchid testicles. The focus of this article is the standing laparoscopic cryptorchidectomy, the most common laparoscopic procedure performed on the male equine urogenital tract. A 2-year-old female guinea pig was referred for management of a urethral stone. The stone was diagnosed on radiographs following a 10-day history of stranguria, dysuria, and hematuria. Attempts to remove the stone by urethral catheterization and flushing were unsuccessful. The stone was successfully fragmented and removed by cystoscopic-guided transurethral laser lithotripsy, performed under general anesthesia. The postoperative recovery was uneventful, and hematuria and stranguria resolved 24 hours after the procedure. The animal presented a good urine stream immediately following the procedure and continued to urinate well at recheck a month later. This is the first report of transurethral laser lithotripsy for the treatment of a partially obstructive urethral stone in a guinea pig. This minimally invasive approach provided excellent visualization of the urethra and bladder and allowed complete evaluation of the lower urinary tract in a retrograde manner in this female guinea pig. This novel approach holds great promise for the future treatment of lower urinary tract stones in this species.  相似文献

Since a rare anomaly of the female genital tract was defined as uterine and vaginal duplexes with a developmental anomaly at the vaginovestibular junction, it was morphologically examined in detail in a Japanese Brown calf. The genital tract was completely duplicated from the uterus to the vagina just cranial to the vestibule. At the vaginovestibular junction, a hymenal constriction and an aberrant location of the outer urethral orifice were also observed. These anomalies suggest that an error in the complete fusion of the Mullerian ducts and a failure in the correlated development between the Mullerian ducts and the urogenital sinus occurred in the embryonic stage.  相似文献

Urinary tract disease is not an uncommon presentation for pet rabbits. It is beneficial for the veterinarian treating these patients to have a thorough understanding of a rabbit's urogenital anatomy, renal physiology, and diseases that affect the kidney and urinary tract. The evaluation of the rabbit urinary tract requires a multidisciplinary approach including the procurement of a thorough history, signalment, assessment of clinical signs, physical examination, and diagnostic test results. To obtain a definitive disease diagnosis, more intensive diagnostic testing may be required, including contrast radiography, ultrasound evaluation, and histopathological assessment of biopsy samples. This article will provide information to aid in the diagnosis and treatment of rabbit urinary tract diseases.  相似文献

A prebreeding examination should be performed on animals of both sexes to ensure their optimal health at the time of breeding. At this time, the medical and reproductive histories should be reviewed to detect potential negative influences upon the reproductive tract. Serologic testing for canine brucellosis should be performed to detect and remove infected animals from the breeding program. Examination of the female reproductive tract may be limited to the caudal vagina, vestibule, and vulva. Defects that cause pain and reluctance to breed may be detected with thorough digital and visual inspection. The male reproductive tract can be examined along nearly its entire length without special techniques. Semen may be collected for initial evaluation of testicular function and fertility. Swelling of the vulva and a hemorrhagic vaginal discharge will alert the observant owner to the onset of proestrus. Vaginal cytology may be examined every few days after the observed onset of proestrus to determine the onset of estrus. Breeding should be performed by natural or artificial insemination every 2 to 4 days during estrus to achieve optimal conception rates. The bitch should not be exhibited or trained during the period of potential pregnancy. Unnecessary drugs should not be administered. A diagnosis of pregnancy may be made by abdominal palpation 28 to 30 days after the last breeding. Serum progesterone levels may be measured if pregnancy is not established to determine if ovulation occurred and if sufficient levels of progesterone are present to maintain pregnancy. Optimal breeding management techniques can often result in the maximum reproductive efficiency desired.  相似文献
