SUMMARY The financial costs and benefits associated with the use of artificial insemination (AI) in commercial flocks are evaluated. Benefits are calculated in terms of net present values after summing the discounted value of benefits over 20 years. Two breeding strategies are evaluated. With the first, AI is used to produce flock ewes and wethers. The method is unlikely to be profitable unless high breeding value rams are available for AI programs with fresh semen. With the second, AI is used to produce home-bred rams, which in turn sire flock ewes and wethers. This approach is more likely to be profitable. The cost of AI per lamb weaned from laparoscopic AI programs is about $100. Benefits exceed this cost for rams of very high merit when wool prices are moderate or higher. Flock structure has a significant effect on the benefits. Flocks with low wether retention rates have benefits half that of flocks that retain most wethers to 6 years of age. AI with purchased semen also provides benefits to risk management for owners of commercial flocks who wish to breed their own replacement flock rams.  相似文献

A flock of 294 Swaledale sheep was injected with brain tissue from different sources so as to include strains of natural scrapie currently affecting the Swaledale breed. Discounting intercurrent deaths, 85 per cent of the flock developed clinical scrapie within an observation period of 2557 days (seven years). Scrapie cases fell into distinct early and late groups, occurring at (mean +/- sem) 287 +/- 7 days and 1207 +/- 38 days after injection, respectively. Breeding groups were formed from the survivors after the early cases had occurred and successive lamb crops were produced. Two groups of progeny and two groups of controls were injected with scrapie. The incidence of scrapie in the progeny (27 per cent) was much lower than in the controls (64 per cent). The incidence in the progeny was also assessed in relation to the response of their parents: it was high (about 40 per cent) when one or both parents developed late scrapie but otherwise very low (about 5 per cent). Hence the progeny of surviving parents had a greatly reduced susceptibility to the strains of scrapie used. Seventy-two of these selected progeny formed a nucleus flock which is being bred at Redesdale. The next stage of the experiment is to assess the effect of selected rams in recorded flocks with a high incidence of natural scrapie.  相似文献

A commercial flock of Suffolk and Suffolk-cross breeding rams was monitored for 5 years in an effort to control epididymitis caused by Brucella ovis. Scrotal palpation, semen evaluations, and vaccination against B ovis were used the first 3 years. Serologic evaluation (complement fixation and ELISA) was added the fourth year, and bacteriologic culturing was added to the program the fifth year. Semen culturing in the fifth year revealed 9 (37.5%) of 24 rams were actively excreting B ovis; 6 of those 9 rams were seronegative. Neither semen quality nor the presence of WBC in the semen were dependable criteria to detect these seronegative carriers. In spite of the high percentage of B ovis excretors, few clinical signs of epididymitis were detected in the flock during the last 3 years of the study. It was hypothesized that vaccination protected rams against the clinical disease but not the carrier state. The importance of culturing semen for assessment of a control program was emphasized.  相似文献

The effect of vaginal and cervical deposition of frozen-thawed semen on the fertility of sheep was tested in a field trial in which 543 Norwegian crossbred ewes aged between six months and five-and-a-half years from 10 farms were inseminated after natural oestrus. Cervical insemination with 200 x 10(6) spermatozoa resulted in 25-day non-return and lambing rates of 75.4 and 72.7 per cent, respectively, and vaginal insemination gave rates of 71.3 and 67.4 per cent; the cervical inseminations produced significantly higher lambing rates (P=0.04). There were significant differences between the lambing rates for different rams (P=0.006) and different farmers (P=0.003), and there was a significant interaction between farmer and deposition site (P=0.03). After vaginal insemination fertility was encouragingly high, but the results varied with the farmer, and different flock and management conditions.  相似文献

The effect of scrotal mange (Chorioptes bovis) on semen quality was assessed in a flock of rams during an outbreak of chorioptic mange and in rams with experimentally induced chorioptic mange. Semen quality of 21 rams with chorioptic mange lesions involving less than 10 cm2 of the scrotum was indistinguishable from that of control rams. Conversely, all 10 rams examined with lesions covering more than a third of the scrotum had poor semen quality. Between these 2 extremes some rams with relatively severe scrotal mange had semen of good quality while others with relatively minor scrotal lesions had semen of poor quality. The seminal degeneration and regeneration associated with the development and spontaneous cure of scrotal mange were very similar to that seen following experimental elevation of testicular temperature.  相似文献

Epididymitis was diagnosed in three rams in a commercial sheep flock in southern Ontario. The affected rams had palpably enlarged epididymides and two rams had semen which contained inflammatory cells and was of poor quality. Serum compliment fixation titers for Brucella ovis were 1:20, 1:80 and 1:90. Five other rams in the flock were clinically normal and without titers. Two of the affected rams had lesions similar to those produced by experimental infection with B. ovis. The infection in the rams had no apparent affect on ewe performance. The source of the infection remains unknown, but the rams were purchased from a flock which had imported ewes from the western U.S.A.  相似文献

An epidemiological study was conducted to determine the impact of maedi-visna (MV) seropositivity on productivity in commercial sheep flocks of the province of Quebec, Canada. A total of 1734 ewes and 220 rams were selected randomly from 29 flocks distributed in the Bas-St-Laurent and Estrie regions. Serostatus was determined with an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) using recombinant proteins.Flock-specific, animal-level seroprevalence varied from 3 to 70% (median=29%). Seroprevalence increased with age and size of the flock, and was higher in ewes relative to rams (but was not associated with body score). A decrease of 0.94 kg per lamb in weaning weight was seen only for lambs raised by seropositive ewes >/=4 years old, and seropositivity in ewes of any age was associated with an increase in 0-30 days lamb-mortality (OR: 1.65). The impact of MV infection on weaning weight and lamb mortality did not vary between flocks, and seropositivity in ewes was not associated with litter size or lamb's birth weight.  相似文献

The measures taken to eradicate Brucella ovis infection from a naturally infected flock of 64 rams are described. Lesions of epididymitis were detected in 18 rams, all of which gave either positive or suspicious reactions in the complement fixation test. A further 20 rams gave serological reactions in the complement fixation test. Subsequently, semen was collected from 14 of these 20 rams and B. ovis was cultured from the semen of all 14 rams. Serum samples from two rams failed to react in the complement fixation test. However, they were identified as infected with the aid of an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay and the subsequent culture of semen samples. It is suggested that, when eradicating B. ovis infection from ram flocks, the enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay be used in addition to both the complement fixation test and the physical examination. Using a combination of tests as described can increase the likehood of an earlier eradication of B. ovis infection.  相似文献

The eradication of Brucella ovis from a commercial flock of 36 Romney rams was complicated by four infected rams remaining undetected despite four successive flock examinations using the complement fixation test. These four rams were subsequently tested using an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay and a gel diffusion test and shown to be infected by semen culture. All four rams could have been identified as infected at the initial test if the enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay had been used in addition to the complement fixation test. Although gross evidence of epididymitis was found in only one ram at necropsy, three had histological lesions of epididymitis and all four had a seminal vesiculitis.  相似文献

SUMMARY Serum samples from 5724 rams on 534 farms in New South Wales were tested in the indirect fluorescent antibody test for toxoplasmosis. Nine per cent of rams had titres of 64 or higher and 41% of flocks had either one or more rams with a titre of 64 or higher. There were significant differences in the geographical distribution of infected flocks, ranging from 57.8% of flocks infected on the tablelands to 41% on the slopes and 22.4% on the plains. There were significantly more infected commercial flocks (47.5%) than stud flocks (32.9%). The results indicated that the prevalence of infection was influenced by management, with a higher prevalence of infection in flocks kept under an intensive or semi-intensive system of management.  相似文献

Epidemiology of Haemophilus somnus in young rams   总被引:1,自引:1,他引:0       下载免费PDF全文
The prevalence of Haemophilus somnus in the prepuce of young rams was examined. Of 473 rams entering Record of Performance (ROP) stations at 50 days of age, 43 (9.1%) were positive. Average daily gain was not affected by Haemophilus status, but was influenced by breed of ram. Suffolks were predicted to gain 0.515 kg daily compared to 0.427 kg for a group combining all other breeds. Using logistic regression to identify risk factors for individual H. somnus infection, rams in 1989 were 0.382 times as likely to be infected as rams in 1988, and Suffolks were 0.314 times as likely to be infected as the other breeds group, but these factors were not significant at the flock level. Of 80 eligible flocks of origin, 22 (27.5%) were classified as infected with H. somnus, based on rams submitted to the ROP station. Infected flocks contributed 133 rams, 43 (32.3%) of which were positive. There was no association between H. somnus status and lambing percent of the percent of abortions and stillbirths, but there was a statistically significant association with the percent of ewes which failed to lamb. In the model developed, 6% of the bred ewes in noninfected flocks failed to lamb, compared to a rate of 12% in infected flocks. These results suggest H. somnus may influence ewe fertility earlier, rather than later in gestation. Purchasing replacement animals and having cattle on the farm were risk factors for Haemophilus infection in the flock. Where replacements had been purchased within the previous year, the risk of flock infection rose 8.5 times, and on farms having cattle as well as sheep, the risk rose 13.2 times.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献

Breeding-soundness examination (BSE) and eradication of Brucella ovis infection in rams are critical components of flock-health programs. The aims of this retrospective, cross-sectional study were to describe the results of BSE in a large sample of rams in the Western USA and to determine the association between BSE outcome and the semen collection method (penis manually extended vs. retained in the preputial cavity), ram body-condition score (BCS), the presence of ulcerative posthitis, and the size of the flock of origin. We evaluated the first BSE in a given year for rams from Colorado, Wyoming, and Utah, USA, from 2000 through 2007. Breeding-soundness examination consisted of physical examination, scrotal circumference and BCS measurement, semen collection by electroejaculation, and microscopic examination of semen motility, morphology, and leukocyte concentration. We assigned a reason for failure to each failed BSE and used multivariable logistic and Poisson regressions to measure associations between ram and flock variables and the risk or reason for failure on BSE. A non-random, owner-selected subset of rams was tested for antibodies to B. ovis by serum indirect ELISA (iELISA). The Rogan-Gladen corrected B. ovis seroprevalence was measured. Of the 14,667 BSEs performed on 11,804 rams, 29.0% were classified as "failed;" the most common reason for failure was substandard semen parameters (43.8%). Breeding-soundness examinations were more likely to have been categorized as failure for inflammatory causes when performed on rams from medium-sized flocks (OR 1.6; 95% CI 1.1, 2.3) and large flocks (OR 1.4; 95% CI 1.0, 1.9) (P=0.02), suggesting that larger flocks are at higher risk of contagious diseases. The adjusted seroprevalence of B. ovis antibodies among tested rams in this study was 10.0%. Of 233 rams seropositive to B. ovis, 125 (53.6%) were subclinical, a finding that supports the importance of this test in ram BSE. We found that emaciation in rams was associated with an increased risk of BSE failure from substandard semen parameters (P<0.001), but ulcerative posthitis and the semen collection method were not (P=0.09 and 0.34, respectively). However, collection of semen with the penis retained in the preputial cavity resulted in greater odds of leukospermia relative to semen collection with the penis extended (OR 4.1; 95% CI 2.9, 5.9; P<0.001), presumably from contamination of the semen sample with preputial leukocytes. For ram BSE, therefore, semen collection with the penis manually extended from the sheath is recommended to limit leukocyte contamination of the sample.  相似文献

Lifetime production of first-generation 1/4 and 1/2 Finnsheep crossbred ewes from Rambouillet (R), Targhee (T) and Columbia (C) dams was compared with that from randomly selected purebred R, T and C ewes. All 1,190 ewes, representing nine breed groups, were managed under range conditions and mated annually to Suffolk rams. Lifetime production was evaluated as the total lamb and total wool production per ewe from the time each entered the breeding flock at 7 mo of age through the period each remained in the flock (potentially seven producing years). Culling was for debilitating unsoundness only. The study was designed to determine the average lifetime production per breed group as affected by natural ewe attrition. Orphan-reared lambs were not included in lamb production nor were foster lambs, except those actually born in and reared by the groups. Differences among pooled breed groups (1/4 Finns, 1/2 Finns and purebreds) were not significant for average final age in the flock (5.1, 5.1 and 4.9 yr, respectively), but differences were significant (P less than .01) for lifetime lamb and wool production. Average lifetime fleece weights of 1/4 and 1/2 Finn ewes were only 95 and 82% as high, respectively, as those of purebreds. However, 1/4 and 1/2 Finn ewes had 34 and 46%, respectively, higher numbers of lambs weaned (at 130 d) and 30 and 38% higher total weight of lamb weaned than purebreds.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献

A statistic to measure the level of connectedness achieved among flocks would help producers to assess the risk of comparing EBV of animals from different flocks. The objectives of this research were to evaluate the pattern of change over time in selected connectedness measures and to determine how effectively these measures quantify the level of risk due to potential bias in EBV comparisons across production units. Connectedness was evaluated using simulated sheep populations, with connections established using sire referencing schemes (SRS). Pedigree and performance data for a single trait with a within-flock heritability of 0.25 were simulated (50 replications) for 15 flocks with 40 to 140 ewes per flock. Genetic means for each flock were sampled from a normal distribution with mean 0 and SD equal to the trait's genetic SD. After 10 yr of random mating, flocks had opportunity to join a SRS and selection began for the simulated trait. Yearling rams were chosen as reference sires randomly from the top one-sixth of the population ranked on BLUP EBV. Every year, in each flock, 3 reference sires were mated to 10 ewes each. Six sire referencing scenarios (including no SRS) and 2 sources of nonreference sires were simulated. Connectedness was measured in 2 ways: (i) as the average prediction error correlation (r(ij)) of the flock genetic means (flock r(ij)) or the EBV for the current crop of ram lambs (lamb r(ij)) or (ii) as the average scaled prediction error variance of differences (PEVD) in flock genetic means (flock PEVD) or in lamb EBV in the current crop of ram lambs (lamb PEVD). Flock r(ij) increased linearly in all scenarios while SRS was underway and leveled off if the flocks discontinued SRS. Lamb r(ij) increased rapidly as soon as SRS began but decreased substantially if the flocks discontinued SRS. Behavior of flock PEVD and lamb PEVD measures were similar but in the opposite direction (i.e., PEVD decreased with increasing r(ij)). Within scenarios, both flock r(ij) and flock PEVD had a nonlinear relationship with bias in comparing animals across flocks. However, only flock r(ij) exhibited a consistent relationship across simulation scenarios. When flock r(ij) reached 0.05 and 0.10, approximately 20 and 10%, respectively, of the bias due to initial differences in flock genetic means remained. These levels of flock r(ij) are suggested as benchmark levels for minimizing the risk of comparing animal EBV among units.  相似文献

In 1984, 31 per cent of 437 ram lambs reared on one property were found to have either bilateral or unilateral testicular hypoplasia. Similar numbers of ram lambs were reared in the next three years and 13, 2 and 0.5 per cent were affected. Severely abnormal testicles typically produced no spermatozoa and presented a 'Sertoli cell only' picture. Sixty-six of 200 ewe lambs born in 1984 were not marked by a harnessed teaser before mating; 12 of these were examined further and eight were found to have bilateral ovarian hypoplasia. The ovaries were very small and contained no oocytes or follicles. Plasma gonadotrophin levels were higher than normal in bilaterally affected rams and ewes but plasma testosterone and inhibin concentrations in rams with bilateral hypoplasia were not significantly different from those in normal rams. A genetic cause of the gonadal hypoplasia was considered unlikely in view of the pattern of occurrence and an examination of the flock pedigrees. No environmental cause was found. Two environmental sources of toxins were considered worthy of further investigation; onion grass (Romulea species) with its leaf spot fungus Helminthosporium biseptatum and the water supply which could have contained high concentrations of arsenic or other toxins during the period when the mothers of the affected lambs were in early pregnancy.  相似文献

Complement fixation tests using three B. ovis antigen preparations in warm fixation tests (WCFT) and cold fixation (CCFT) tests were done on 541 ram sera. Semen samples from the same rams were examined culturally to identify B. ovis excretors. The CCFT, using an antigen prepared by heat extraction of B. ovis cells, had a sensitivity of 97% in 124 rams which were shedding B.ovis. The specificity was 99% in 144 rams from non-infected flocks. Seventy-seven per cent of 156 rams which reacted to this test were shedding B. ovis in their semen. Tests with other antigens were inferior in sensitivity and/or specificity. The WCFT gave lower titres than CCFT. Vaccination caused large numbers of false positive reactions in 4 flocks.  相似文献

A new form of bilateral renal dysplasia in lambs appeared in a commercial sheep flock in 1982. The nature of the problem, the field investigations and the laboratory examinations carried out over three lambing seasons are described. It was concluded that the condition was vertically transmitted and genetic in origin. During the two years that accurate records were kept approximately 30 per cent of the suspected ram's progeny died with lesions of renal dysplasia. The condition recurred during a breeding trial in progeny from one of the two commercial rams originally used on the farm. An autosomal dominant mode of inheritance is suggested. The incidence illustrates the importance of keeping breeding records, especially when several rams are maintained in a flock, and the value of examining a large number of lambs post mortem.  相似文献

The epidemiology and economics of Brucella ovis control in a hypothetical, commercial sheep flock (100 rams and 2,500 ewes) were investigated. The investigation consisted of an epidemiologic simulation model, reported in a companion paper, and a decision-tree analysis, reported here. It was predicted from the simulation model that B ovis could be eradicated successfully in 2 test periods (less than 1 year) from a flock by using intensive screening and culling. A computerized decision-tree program was used to determine the economically optimal control strategy among several alternatives. Two versions of the program were used to determine the optimal alternative, based on minimizing the expected monetary loss (deterministic) and minimizing the associated risk (stochastic). The economically optimal alternative was to screen the rams by means of palpation, semen testing, and ELISA prior to the mating season. Rams positive to any test were culled. After the mating season was completed, the optimal action was to use ELISA for the remaining rams and to cull all that were ELISA positive. The cost of this alternative was approximately $6,150, or less than one half the annual cost of a vaccination program ($12,800) or no program ($13,550). Continuing palpation and semen testing were considered worthwhile on the basis of detecting new cases of B ovis infection and in maintaining high flock fertility. Similarly, the cost of annual use of ELISA was small (approximately $100), compared with the potential cost of not detecting a new case of B ovis infection.  相似文献

Scrotal mange
Extract

Sir —I am assessing the effects of scrotal mange on ram fertility, and would like to test semen in a flock of rams where there is a severe outbreak of the disease. A severe outbreak would entail that a proportion of the rams lesions involving one third of the scrotum (see fig. 1) with exudate approximately one centimetre thick. An outbreak on this scale is probably rare, and I would appreciate the co-operation of any veterinarian in assisting me to locate a suitable flock.  相似文献
