Our study dealt with the determination of sapwood sap flow of a single Populus euphratica tree by heat pulse technique and the calculation of water consumption of an entire forest stand, given the correlation between sap flow and sapwood area of P. euphratica. The relation between diameter at breast height (DBH) and sapwood area constitutes a powerful model; these variables are highly correlated. By means of an analysis of DBH in the sample plot, the distribution of the sapwood area of the forest land was obtained and the water consumption of this P. euphratica forest, in the lower reaches of the Heihe River, calculated as 214.9 mm by standard specific conductivity of the sample tree.  相似文献

The profitability of forestry in Germany decreased during recent decades because of more or less constant prices for forest products, increasing input prices and limited success in rationalisation. However, the volume of growing stock increased significantly during this period since forest enterprises have chosen longer rotation periods. This is especially true for state owned and community owned forests but also at least partly for private forests. It is normally not an alternative for the owners of forest enterprises in Germany to sell the forests completely, but on a first glance increasing investments in standing timber during a time of decreasing profitability of forestry seems to be inconsistent with economic theory. On the one hand this observation could be explained as the result of non-timber values. However, this paper is focused on another approach, which is an expanded Faustmann model in line with soil rent theory and focused on timber production. Profitable rotations in the future have the effect of shortening the optimal rotation period because an investment in standing timber causes opportunity costs by delaying the establishment of the next generation of the forest. Unprofitable future rotations have the opposite effect, if the landowner is forced to reforest. In case investments in reforestations are not profitable decision-makers have good reasons not to cut the mature stands, in spite of the fact that the internal rates of return of investments in standing timber are low in comparison with investments on the financial market. Empirical data for the period 1954–1998 mostly from guidelines for forest valuation are used together with inflation corrected interest rates to show that optimal rotation length increased over time. Nevertheless we have to recognise that the observed rotation periods are distinctly longer than the calculated optimal rotation lengths. Compressed wooden plates and dowels were used to connect members in post-and-beam structures as a substitute for a steel fastener. In order to take advantage of the characteristic properties of compressed wood and to achieve optimum joint performance, two compressed wooden plates were used in each joint to give multiple shear planes for each compressed wooden dowel. Consequently, this type of joint showed very good properties in pull-out and momen-trotation performance, and its engineering design could be further optimized. This joint is expected to be introduced to many kinds of structural systems, including long-span frame structures made of domestic timber found in Japanese residential houses.  相似文献

The worldwide increase of human pressure in rural areas has resulted in a progressive fragmentation of agro-forest landscapes. Relatively few studies have identified processes of landscape modification and patch fragmentation reflecting long-term human activity from those caused by recent urbanization stimulated by economic development, population growth and improved accessibility of rural areas. In rural districts dominated by high-quality crop mosaics and exposed to increasing levels of human pressure, urbanization-driven changes in the use of land have determined complex and non-linear processes of landscape fragmentation which deserve further investigation. Multidimensional procedures and data mining are appropriate to explore such transformations, basing on a comprehensive assessment of landscape metrics. The present study investigates changes in land-use and landscape structure (2000–2008) in three districts of Latium (central Italy) featuring different cropping systems, physiographic attributes and level of human pressure. A principal component analysis was run to identify a core set of metrics aimed at (i) evaluating the role of traditional cropping systems in the preservation of traditional agro-forest systems and (ii) inferring the relationship between spatial heterogeneity in rural landscapes and socio-ecological processes of change. Our results indicate that crop intensification has contributed to landscape homogeneity and simplification in all areas studied, in contrast with the effects of urban expansion resulting in a more fragmented and diversified landscape with relict tree crop patches. The findings of this study clarify the contribution of traditional tree crop systems to sustainable structures and functions of rural landscapes by preserving the place-specific eco-mosaic complexity.  相似文献

Investigators and sponsors of dietary supplement research need to know the relevant regulatory requirements and how to comply with them. This brief review describes how research on dietary supplements is regulated by FDA. In general, whether an FDA sanctioned Investigational New Drug (IND) application is required for a human research project on dietary supplement depends on the intended use and clinical setting of the clinical study, and not on the supplement's physical or chemical properties. Even if the study product is already available on the market as a dietary supplement, an IND will be required for products that will be used as a drug to treat, mitigate or prevent a disease or its related conditions in the proposed clinical study. On the other hand, for studies on structure and function endpoints, and not on drug use, no IND will be required. The paper also discusses the principles FDA uses to determine whether an IND is needed for clinical studies of surrogate endpoints that do not lead to approvable drug claims. Female inflorescence of Betula platyphylla was sampled at an interval of each two days to analyze the background of gene expression in floral phase. On the basis of SMART strategy, the driver cDNA was obtained from total RNA of the last sample and the tester cDNA was from that of the others by RT-PCR which were subsequently used to construct a subtracted cDNA library. The result of the ESTs (expression sequence tags) blastX showed that the genes in the subtracted cDNA library could be mainly clustered into 5 groups related to metabolism, transportation and signal transduction, cell cycle, stress response, and regulation. The study determined the productivity, fuel consumption and product quality obtained with a new tractor OWered drum chipper, designed to reduce the gap between industrial chippers and small-scale chippers. The machine as tested with poplar logs and beech slabs, considered as representative of the raw material commonly used for ergy wood production. After accounting for accessory work and delays, productivity of green chips ranged between and 6 tons per scheduled machine hour, which was very good for a tractor-powered unit. Specific fuel consumption f oven-dry chips varied between 2.5 and 3.0 L per ton, or 0.6 L per m_3. These figures compared favourably with those btained from previous studies of both smaller and bigger chippers. Chip quality was very good. Samples contained no versize particles, qualifying for use in small-scale plants. The average size of beech chips was significantly larger than r poplar chips, possibly due to the higher strength of beech wood.  相似文献

Plant leaves may emit a substantial amount of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) into the atmosphere, which include isoprene, terpene, alkanes, alkenes, alcohols, aldehydes, eters, esters and carboxylic acids. Furthermore, most of these compounds actively participate in tropospheric chemistry. Great progresses have been made in linking emission of these compounds to climate. However, the VOCs emission function in plant is still not clear. Recently, some evidence has emerged that the production and the emission of VOCs, such as isoprene and monoterpenes, which account for 80% of total VOCs, exhibit plant protection against high temperatures. These increases in VOCs emissions could contribule in a significant way to plant thermotolerance. This perspective summarizes some latest literatures regarding the VOCs emission-dependent thermoprotection in plant species subjected to high temperature stress, presents the achievement in studies concerning plant VOCs emission-dependent thermotolerance, and then exhibits the proposed mechanisms of such plant thermotolerance. Finally open questions regarding the plant VOCs emission were shown, and the future researches were proposed.  相似文献

The aim of the present study was to evaluate the effects of the application of wood-bark ash (WBA) on the growth and nutritional status of a 5-year-old hybrid chestnut plantation in two consecutive periods of 3 and 4 years, i.e., from age 5 to 8 years and from age 8 to 12 years, respectively. A field experiment, which included 3 treatments and 4 replicate blocks, was established on an acidic, organic matter-rich mineral soil. The treatments were two different doses of ash (10 and 20 t ha?1) and an unfertilized control. Application of the ash (by spreading on the ground) produced mean increases of 16% in diameter and 11% in height growth of trees during the first 3 years, considering both doses together; the response was also significant for the subsequent period, particularly with the higher dose of ash (increases of 11% in diameter and 15% in height growth). The ash had a marked effect, although clearly short lived, on pH (H2O) levels (an increase of 0.6 units) and on exchangeable soil K, Ca and Mg. The nutritional status of the plantation was improved, mainly in terms of K, Ca and Mg, and the results of a vector analysis indicated that these elements, particularly K, were limiting forest production. Foliar or soil nutrient concentrations in the mineral soil were no longer affected by the ash at age 12 years. We recommend the application of two doses of 10 Mg ha?1 throughout the rotation for fertilizing acid mineral soils that are rich in organic matter.  相似文献

The present and past population status of oak (Quercus robur) in the Bia?owie?a National Park preserve (BNP) was analyzed with respect to the historic use of the ecosystem. I assessed average parameters (density, dbh distribution, differences between habitat categories) of the oak population in the whole BNP preserve, and performed detailed analyses of local populations on three 26.5-ha and one 3.5-ha plots, representing eutrophic sites of deciduous forest (3) and a mesotrophic site of mixed forest (1). Based on the tree ring data, I reconstructed the historic dbh distribution back to 1750–1825. The results of the reconstruction confirm the early 1800s expert account and the 1889 forestry survey report. The high oak concentration in eutrophic habitats are legacies of either active game management (e.g., bison habitat improvement measures, supplementary feeding), forest recovery after the ban on forest industries (baking potash, tar, charcoal), or abandonment of inner small farms. The emergence of oak on poorer sites in the mid 1800s coincides with the ban on use of fire—a common practice that earlier had perpetuated the dominating position of fire-resistant pine. The present oak regeneration in declining spruce stands is a further step of the forest natural adaptation to environmental changes. The study supports the view that BNP is a remnant of an ecosystem substantially shaped by human uses. Modern forestry, as practiced in the managed part of the Bia?owie?a forest, does not mimic either natural processes (as observed in BNP) or historic forest uses.  相似文献

Coconut-based agroforestry systems have a central role in livelihoods on Malo Island in the South Pacific. These mixed plantations provide households with both food and a cash income, thanks to the association in space and time of root crops, vegetables, and cash crops (coconut, cocoa and vanilla). Vanilla has been developed on the island since the year 2000. Farmers have tried to adapt their production systems to include it, with some choosing to do so by associating vanilla with their main cash crop, coconut. A survey of these innovative practices and their economic results conducted in 2005 resulted in an economic modelling of this new agroforestry system with the software Olympe. This study illustrates the use of economic modelling with Olympe to simulate and test new agricultural practices in complex agroforestry systems. The software proved to suit agroforestry systems very well and provided useful information, particularly on economic aspects.  相似文献

Considerable progress has been made in our ability to model and measure annual gross primary production (GPP) by terrestrial vegetation. But challenges remain in estimating maintenance respiration (R(m)) and net primary production (NPP). To search for possible common relationships, we assembled annual carbon budgets from six evergreen and one deciduous forest in Oregon, USA, three pine plantations in New South Wales, Australia, a deciduous forest in Massachusetts, USA, and a Nothofagus forest on the South Island of New Zealand. At all 12 sites, a standard procedure was followed to estimate annual NPP of foliage, branches, stems, and roots, the carbon expended in synthesis of these organs (R(g)), their R(m), and that of previously produced foliage and sapwood in boles, branches, and large roots. In the survey, total NPP ranged from 120 to 1660 g C m(-2) year(-1), whereas the calculated fraction allocated to roots varied from 0.22 to 0.63. Comparative analysis indicated that the total NPP/GPP ratio was conservative (0.47 +/- 0.04 SD). This finding supports the possibility of greatly simplifying forest growth models. The constancy of the NPP/GPP ratio also provides an incentive to renew efforts to understand the environmental factors affecting partitioning of NPP above and belowground.  相似文献

The current study compared two approaches for estimating change of aboveground biomass (AGB) in montane forests in Norway using field- and remotely sensed data from airborne laser scanning (ALS) from two points in time (four-year interval). The first was an indirect method that involved modeling and prediction of AGB at two points in time using ALS metrics as predictors, estimating the change from differences between AGB predictions. The second was a direct method, where change was modeled and predicted directly using differences between corresponding ALS metrics derived at the two measurement occasions as predictors, and the estimate was based on the predicted differences. Both methods were applied over a 1500?km long and 250?m wide transect from south to north in Norway comprising 250?m2 grid cells. The results showed that the indirect method was more precise than the direct method. The indirect method estimated 0.65?Mg?ha?1 change in AGB over the observation period, with a corresponding 95% confidence interval of ±0.27?Mg?ha?1. The corresponding figures for the direct method was 0.54 and ±0.51?Mg?ha?1. The direct method has been recommended previously. We conclude that the indirect method is both more precise and versatile.  相似文献
