Nematodirosis was diagnosed in the south-east of Scotland during two consecutive autumns in lambs which were grazed on the same field. The problem was unpredicted based on the knowledge of the pasture and animal management, and rudimentary understanding of the behaviour of free-living stages of Nematodirus battus in the region. Unlike the epidemiology that has been described in the south of England, whereby autumn infection of lambs is believed to arise from autumn hatching of eggs shed during the previous spring without prior chilling, it is concluded that the autumn nematodirosis in a particular sheep flock in Scotland most likely arose following prolonged survival of larvae hatched during the spring from eggs shed during the previous summer, following periods of cold exposure over the previous winter. The infective larvae survived in large numbers in a small, sheltered strip of rough grazing, where they would have been protected from harmful ultraviolet radiation and heavy rainfall, before infecting lambs during the autumn. Understanding of the evolutionary potential, nematode parasites to adapt to changing environmental conditions depends on a thorough clinical investigative approach, and is a prerequisite for future preventive management.  相似文献

Faecal egg count and pasture larval studies on N battus and N filicollis in lambs showed distinct differences in epidemiology, the infective larvae of N battus hatching over a short restricted period in spring, whereas those of N filicollis show an extended period of hatching, beginning in autumn and increasing steadily through the winter to reach a spring peak. This difference was considered to be responsible for the much slower annual rate of increase recorded for N filicollis. Pasture infection with both species survived ploughing and reseeding, though in very small numbers, and one year's rest from sheep by alternate grazing with cattle proved equally effective in reducing the carryover of infection, and offered a practical method of controlling these species.  相似文献

An experiment to determine the origin of populations of infective larvae of cattle nematode parasites on pasture during winter was conducted in south-west Western Australia. Six pasture plots were contaminated with worm eggs by grazing worm-infected cattle for periods of a month during summer and autumn. Each plot was contaminated at a different time from the rest. The levels of infective larvae were determined by counting the worm burdens of tracer calves which test-grazed the plots the following winter.Tracer calves which grazed the plots contaminated during summer acquired few worms, whereas those that grazed the plots contaminated during autumn acquired many worms. It was concluded that the hot, dry conditions prevailing during summer and early autumn prevented the development of eggs or survival of larvae in dung pats or free on pasture. In this environment, a programme of worm control which relied on administration of anthelmintic to grazing cattle to prevent autumn contamination of pasture would be most likely to succeed if the first treatment was given in early autumn.  相似文献

In a study originally designed to determine the seasonal origin of the high levels of availability of nematode larvae to cattle in winter and spring, plots were serially contaminated with eggs of Ostertagia ostertagi and Cooperia oncophora by naturally-infected calves at monthly intervals from February 1980 to September 1980. The availability of infective larvae was monitored by monthly pasture sampling and larval recovery. Because of the intervention of a 15 month drought, recoveries of larvae from the pastures were very low until March 1981 (autumn in Australia) when large numbers of larvae appeared on pastures contaminated in the preceding spring. Examination of dry dung pats at that time showed that significant numbers of larvae were present in pats deposited up to a year previously, and particularly in pats deposited in May, August and September. Following the resumption of normal rainfall in May 1981, larval numbers in pats rapidly declined and concentrations of larvae on the pastures increased to extremely high levels. It is suggested that survival of infective larvae in dry dung pats was enhanced by the drought, with implications for control of nematode infections of cattle, particularly in winter rainfall environments.  相似文献

The epidemiology of Nematodirus battus infection under a husbandry system based on an annual alternation of sheep and cattle was studied from 1983 to 1985. Pasture larval levels and sheep and cattle worm egg outputs were monitored from April to September each year. The level of N battus contamination on the sheep pasture and the number of clinically affected lambs increased over the three years despite grazing with cattle in the intervening year. Examination of cattle faeces demonstrated that six-month-old calves excreted moderate numbers of N battus eggs in June and July, thus contaminating next season's sheep grazing.  相似文献

A worm-control program utilising treatment of young grazing cattle with fenbendazole on two occasions during summer was tested in the Mediterranean-type climatic environment of south-west Western Australia. The grazing system aimed to produce steers by introducing three-month-old weaned calves to pasture in mid-winter until they were sold in early summer. Comparisons were made of the numbers of worm eggs passed on to plots by treated and untreated animals during autumn, the performances of treated and untreated cattle and the performances of calves introduced to the plots in mid-winter. The “tracer” calf technique was used to determine the availability of infective larvae on one untreated and one treated plot for each of the two years of the experiment.Treated animals deposited less Ostertagia spp. eggs on to pasture during autumn than did untreated animals in one of the two years. In both years they deposited less eggs of worm species other than Ostertagia spp. Less intestinal worms were acquired by “tracer” calves grazing treatment plots than those grazing no-treatment plots in both years, but there were no differences in the number of abomasal worms acquired. The reduction in availability of infective larvae of intestinal worms was insufficient to prevent the occurrence of parasitic gastroenteritis in calves introduced to the plots in mid-winter. The fenbendazole treatments did not confer any immediate body-weight advantage on treated animals. On both treatment and no-treatment plots, there were few infective larvae available to grazing cattle during early autumn, there was a rapid attainment of peak availability in winter and then a decline to low availability by mid-spring. In one year, infective larvae of intestinal worms (almost exclusively Cooperia spp.) increased in availability again in late spring and early summer. A high proportion of retarded worms was never a feature of the worm counts of “tracer” calves. It was concluded that the treatments may have been more effective had they been given during autumn.  相似文献

By placing parasite-free calves in paddocks grazed by infected animals for 18 day periods at various times during the previous season it was shown that eggs of Ostertagia ostertagi, Cooperia oncophora and Nematodirus helvetianus deposited on pastures from early July to October of one year were able to survive in the Maritime area of Canada over winter either as eggs and/or larvae and contribute to residual infections on these pastures the following spring. The greatest deposition and/or survival of those eggs that were shed on pasture occurred in August and September for Cooperia and in September and October for Ostertagia. Greatest deposition of Nematodirus occurred in July and August and relatively few Nematodirus eggs shed in late September or early October were infective early in the next season.

The number of generations of worms per year was low, ranging from one to two or perhaps three per year depending on the species. There was a delay in the maturation of many worm eggs.

Residual overwintering infections play a significant role in the establishment of initial infections each summer in susceptible stock. These animals recontaminate the pastures leading to the subsequent development of large numbers of infective larvae by late summer and autumn.

An epidemiological study of gastrointestinal nematode parasitism in beef cattle in mountainous areas of Spain was performed. The dynamics of contamination with gastrointestinal nematode larvae of Pyrenean pastures was studied over four years at five areas at different altitudes (900 m to 2100 m), grazed by animals according to traditional systems of beef cattle in mountainous areas. Grass samples were taken every two weeks and larval differentiation was performed. Worm egg counts of grazing animals were assessed in cows, heifers and calves. A consistent seasonal pattern of infective larvae on pasture through the study was observed. In hay meadows, located below 1000 m, infective larvae were found from the end of October until June of the following year. At higher altitudes (1200-2100 m), a bimodal pattern of pasture larvae contamination was observed with increases in late spring (March-June) and in late autumn (September-November). Ostertagia spp., Cooperia spp., Trichostrongylus spp., Oesophagostomum spp., and Nematodirus spp. were found, with Ostertagia spp. being the most frequently found, followed by Cooperia spp. The highest increase of larval contamination in autumn coincided with the grazing of animals in hay meadows. This elevated autumn larval population had a very important epidemiological role because these larvae remained as overwintered larvae until the following grazing season, starting the cycle of contamination of the animals.  相似文献

Five thousand oocysts of each of two species of coccidia, Eimeria crandallis and E ovinoidalis or 30,000 infective larvae of Nematodirus battus, given as single infections to three- to five-week-old lambs, caused only transient diarrhoea and had no effect on growth. Lambs infected first with coccidia and two weeks later with N battus suffered severe diarrhoea, weight loss and some deaths. Simultaneous administration of the coccidia and the nematodes increased the clinical severity of the syndrome and increased the numbers of nematode eggs produced.  相似文献

A worm control programme in which heifers were treated with anthelmintic on three occasions during autumn, was tested in the Mediterranean-type climatic environment of south-west Western Australia. The experiment aimed to determine if the treatments would prevent the heifers contaminating their pastures with worm eggs during autumn, thereby improving their growth performances the following winter. An attempt was made to measure the availability of infective larvae of abomasal worms on the heifers' pastures during early winter by counting the worms in steers, previously of low worm status, that grazed with the heifers from late autumn until the start of mating in mid-winter.

The anthelmintic treatments reduced the contamination of pasture for most of autumn. The treated heifers that grazed these pastures grew faster, and by the start of mating two months after the last treatment were about 22 kg heavier, than untreated heifers grazing contaminated pasture. At the end of mating six weeks later the difference was 45 kg in favour of the treated heifers. At this time half the heifers grazing contaminated pasture were treated with anthelmintic. The following month these heifers grew faster than those left untreated, but by late November they had not attained the wieght of the heifers grazing uncontaminated pasture.

The heifers that grazed uncontaminated pasture produced more calves the following autumn than did those grazing contaminated pasture. The abomasal worm counts of the steers, with a mean of about 46 000 worms, failed to reveal any difference between treatments in the availability of larvae of abomasal worms on pasture. However, it was concluded that the treatments probably exerted their effect on growth rates by reducing the number of infective larvae ingested by heifers grazing the uncontaminated pasture during winter.  相似文献

The pre-weaning production of ewes and lambs in spring on pastures grazed during the previous autumn and early winter by either weaner sheep, adult sheep, or cattle was investigated together with estimating the benefits of pre- and post-lambing drenches to ewes. These treatments were compared with one in which parasitism was uncontrolled in ewes lambing on pastures grazed previously by untreated weaner sheep, and another where parasitism was suppressed by 2-weekly drenching of the weaner sheep and also of the ewes and their lambs. Prior grazing by cattle effectively eliminated infection of pastures with intestinal Trichostrongylus and Nematodirus spp, but less so for Ostertagia spp. Worthwhile reductions in contamination were also achieved by grazing by adult sheep compared with grazing by undrenched weaners. Despite differences in the parasitological status of the pastures, there were no indications that pre-weaning growth rates of lambs were affected. However, wool growth in ewes was reduced by 10 to 20% by parasite infection. Wool growth of ewes on pastures grazed by cattle during the pre-experimental period exceeded that on any other treatment, and was significantly greater than that of ewes on pastures grazed by undrenched weaners. There was no production benefit in giving a pre-lambing drench to ewes on plots contaminated by weaners, or in giving the additional post-lambing drench to ewes grazing on plots contaminated by weaners, adult sheep or cattle.  相似文献

A grazing experiment with young cattle was conducted over two consecutive (1997, 1998) grazing seasons on semi-natural pasturelands in central-eastern Sweden. Comparisons were made between groups of animals that were either untreated and set-stocked, ivermectin bolus treated and set-stocked or untreated but moved in mid-summer (mid-July) to ungrazed pasture. The whole experimental area had remained virtually free of cattle during the previous two seasons and the cattle had been raised indoors since birth. To introduce low-levels of parasite infection into the experimental system, each animal received a ‘priming dose’ of approximately 10,000 infective trichostrongylid larvae at the time of turnout for both years. Results of the first year study showed that the level of parasitism was so low that it failed to induce any productivity losses in both groups of untreated cattle, which grew as well as those given boluses at turnout. In contrast, in 1998 both groups of untreated cattle suffered varying degrees of sub-clinical and clinical parasitism to result in an average of 30 kg liveweight depression, compared with the bolus treated cattle, at the end of the season. The only major departure between the two years was that in the latter, the cattle in the untreated groups were exposed to infective larval pickup, which had overwintered on pasture. Cattle in the move treatment grazed in the same sequence on pastures used by similar classes of animals during the previous year. That is, their pastures at turnout had not been grazed since mid-summer of the previous year. Clearly this early season (1997) grazing by young cattle resulted in sufficient overwintered larvae at the start of the following year (1998) to cause productivity losses of the same magnitude as those recorded for young cattle grazing on pastures contaminated for the entire grazing season of the previous year. This was confirmed by tracer tests that were carried out on all treatments, at the time of turnout and the mid-summer move in 1999. These results have major significance to organic cattle producers in Sweden who have a much higher tendency to practice a variety of grazing management techniques aimed at controlling nematode parasite infections in young cattle, than their conventional farming colleagues. It has been identified that one of these strategies is to simply use summer/autumn saved pastures for young stock at turnout, which if grazed by young stock prior to this, could prove to be counter-productive.  相似文献

A three-year grazing experiment (1998-2000) was conducted with first-season grazing cattle (FSGC) on improved pastures in central-eastern Sweden. Comparison was made between five groups with 10 calves in each group where four of these were set stocked and either (1) untreated, (2) ivermectin bolus treated, (3) subjected to biological control with the nematophagous fungus Duddingtonia flagrans, or (4) treated with a copper wire particle bolus. The fifth treatment was an evasive grazing strategy, whereby untreated calves were turned out onto pasture used by older cattle the previous year and then these calves were moved to silage aftermath in mid-July. To introduce low-levels of parasite infection to the experiment, each animal received a 'priming dose' of approximately 5,000 Ostertagia ostertagi and 5,000 Cooperia oncophora infective third stage larvae immediately prior to the start of the first grazing year of the trial. Results showed that efficient and sustainable parasite control of FSGC was possible to achieve without the use of anthelmintics by using turnout pastures that the previous year had been grazed by older cattle, in combination with a mid-July move to aftermath leys. Biological control also proved beneficial but the efficacy was impaired if high faecal egg counts coincided with rapid dung pat degradation due to heavy rainfall. No indication of parasite control was observed with the copper wire particle bolus. It was also demonstrated that the impact of gastrointestinal (GI) parasitism varied between years and that the level of overwintering contamination is important but likewise, is unpredictable. Although faecal egg counts in 1999 were low, due both to a delayed turnout and drought for the major part of the grazing season, deposited eggs successfully developed to infective larvae and overwintered in large numbers. The population of overwintered infective larvae at the time of turnout in early May played an important role in the course of infection in 2000 and resulted in an average 65 kg advantage of the ivermectin treated calves compared with the untreated calves. Thus, this three-year grazing experiment has emphasised the importance of subclinical gastrointestinal nematode infections in FSGC in Sweden. In addition, the study has shown that adequate parasite control may be achievable without the use of anthelmintics.  相似文献

The morantel sustained release bolus was administered at turnout to first-season grazing calves in order to assess its efficacy in the seasonal control of infection by nematode parasites in Ireland. The pastures grazed by control calves showed a marked increase in gastrointestinal trichostrongylid infective larvae by September, while numbers of infective larvae on pasture grazed by bolus-treated calves remained at a low level throughout the grazing season. In consequence, the controls showed significantly higher worm egg counts in late season and significantly higher worm burdens (mainly Ostertagia spp) at necropsy carried out in November on representative number of principal animals selected from each group. These reduced worm burdens were attributed to the suppression of egg output during the early part of the season as a result of treatment with the morantel sustained release bolus at turnout in the spring. Pasture contamination with Dictyocaulus viviparus larvae was present on all treatment pastures. The bolus-treated calves however were subjected to an increase in D. viviparus infection which occurred on their pasture in late season after the active life of the bolus had expired. It was concluded that bolus treatment delayed (rather than prevented) the buildup of D. viviparus infection on the pasture by 60-90 days.  相似文献

A field study was undertaken of the possible differences in propensity for inhibited development in strains of cattle nematodes from two different locations in The Netherlands. In one location (Lelystad) the strains were thought to lack the ability for inhibited development as a result of environmental stimuli on the infective larvae, while in the other location (Utrecht) this ability was presumed to be present. The Lelystad strains were kept at the original location and were also transferred to a pasture in Utrecht, while the Utrecht strains remained in Utrecht. At both locations all permanent grazing calves showed high proportions of inhibited early fourth stage larvae of Ostertagia ostertagi, the proportion of the Utrecht strain being higher than the local and the transferred Lelystad strain. For Cooperia oncophora and Nematodirus helvetianus no clear differences between locations were observed in the permanently grazed calves. No inhibition occurred in tracer calves turned out in August in either location, but differences were seen among tracer calves turned out in October. The Lelystad strains, kept in Lelystad or transferred to Utrecht, showed no inhibition, while in the tracer calves grazed on pastures contaminated by the Utrecht strains a marked inhibition of O. ostertagi and N. helvetianus was observed. The Lelystad strains appear to lack the ability, possessed by the Utrecht strains, to inhibit their development in autumn in response to environmental stimuli.  相似文献

Because wheat forage contains high concentrations of N, NPN, digestible DM, and water, beef cattle and sheep require an adaptation period before positive BW are seen. The objective of the present experiment was to determine the impact of length of exposure of lambs and steers to wheat forage on BW gains, N retention, and forage digestibility. Sixteen steer calves (average BW = 210 +/- 12 kg) and 20 wether lambs (average BW = 31.5 +/- 2.0 kg) were randomly assigned to 1 of 2 treatment groups. Group 1 grazed a wheat pasture for 120 d during the winter, whereas group 2 was wintered on dormant warm-season grass pastures plus warm-season grass hay and plant-based protein supplements. In the spring (April 5), all lambs and steers grazed wheat pasture for 14 d and were then housed in metabolism stalls and fed freshly harvested wheat forage to determine forage digestibility and N metabolism. Data were analyzed for lambs and steers separately as a completely randomized design, using the individual animal as the experimental unit. Lambs and steers grazing wheat pasture for the first time in the spring had less ADG during the first 14 d than lambs (80 vs. 270 g, respectively; P = 0.01) and steers (1.06 vs. 1.83 kg, respectively; P = 0.09) that had grazed wheat pastures all winter. Digestibility of DM, NDF, and ADF fractions and N metabolism of freshly harvested wheat forage by lambs and steers were not different (P > 0.10) between the 2 treatment groups. Less ADG during the first 14 d of wheat pasture grazing is most likely the result of less DMI by nonadapted animals and is not due to diet digestibility or N metabolism.  相似文献

The efficacy of using a bolus containing morantel in a sustained-release preparation for controlling naturally acquired gastrointestinal parasitic infections in weaned calves and yearling cattle was investigated during the 1982 grazing season at selected sites in the United States and Canada. According to a common trial design under various climatic and management conditions, 10 field trials were conducted with the bolus. At the time of spring turnout, a bolus was administered to each calf or yearling in the treated group. Then, treated and control cattle grazed separate but equal areas of divided pasture(s). The epidemiologic pattern of parasitic gastroenteritis in control animals and the effect of treatment on this pattern was determined in each trial. Safety and practicality of use of the bolus also were established. When compared with untreated cattle (control), those given the bolus deposited significantly (P less than 0.05) fewer worm eggs (89% reduction) during the first 90 days of the grazing season, as well as significantly fewer (P less than 0.05) worm eggs (84% reduction) during the entire grazing season. Consequently, during the second half of the grazing season, larval populations on treated pastures remained significantly (P less than 0.05) lower (66% reduction), compared with numbers of larvae found on control pastures. For pastures grazed by treated and control cattle at trial initiation, mean worm counts recovered from tracer calves were equal, indicating comparable pasture contamination at the beginning of the grazing season.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献

In the course of studies on the control of bovine parasitic gastroenteritis in south west Scotland using a morantel sustained release bolus the populations of trichostrongyle infective larvae on herbage were monitored over a two-year period. From the results of the herbage analysis and the worm burdens in parasite naive tracer calves introduced at the end of 18 months, it was clear that considerable numbers of infective larvae of Ostertagia ostertagi and Cooperia oncophora survived for at least 18 months on pastures not grazed at all. The results suggest that in south west Scotland after one, or even two, seasons with no further contamination of grazing, permanent cattle pastures cannot be assumed to be helminthologically 'safe' and that this should be taken into consideration when determining prophylactic strategies.  相似文献

The extent to which oocysts of the coccidian parasite Eimeria alabamensis can survive the winter and cause clinical coccidiosis in different parts of Sweden was investigated. Fecal samples were collected between May and July 1993 from calves on 59 farms where calves had grazed the same pasture for at least 5 consecutive years. The farms were situated in 9 regions of Sweden with different climatic conditions in the winter. On each farm, 5 samples of feces were collected from the floor of the calf-house before the calves were turned out in the spring, and again from the pasture on days 4 or 5, 8 or 9 and 10 or 11 after they were turned out. Overwintering of oocysts of E. alabamensis was considered to have occurred if an increase in the excretion rate of oocysts of this species could be demonstrated 8 to 11 days after calves had been turned out to pastures that had not been grazed since the previous autumn. Oocysts were shown to have overwintered on 27 farms, representing all 9 regions. Samples from 20 (34%) of the farms representing all the climatic regions contained more than 850000 oocysts per g of feces. This was comparable with the numbers found in animals with clinical coccidiosis due to E. alabamensis. Delaying turnout until the beginning of July did not affect the infection rate of the calves. However, calves which were turned out to pastures that had been grazed by older cattle or horses, either earlier in the spring or in previous years, excreted significantly fewer oocysts than calves which were turned out to pastures that had been grazed only by calves. A questionnaire answered by 321 dairy farmers revealed that of the 298 farmers who turned their first-season grazing cattle out to traditional pastures, 179 (60%) had used the same pasture for at least 5 years. These 179 farmers had experienced a significantly higher incidence of diarrhoea in their calves during the first 2 weeks at pasture than those farmers who had used different pastures.  相似文献

To test the effect of a parasite control program for cattle, 2 groups of similar composition were grazed on separate, but equivalent, improved pastures. Cattle in 1 group were treated with fenbendazole at 5.0 mg/kg of body weight at the time they were turned out on pasture in the spring and again at midsummer, when the cattle were moved to a new pasture. The control group was not treated. Parasite egg counts were significantly (P less than 0.04) lower in the treated group. Trichostrongyle-type eggs were the most prevalent throughout the year, except in the month of May, when Strongyloides papillosus eggs were predominant. The number of worms recovered from tracer calves was lower for those on pastures where the treated group grazed than for those on the control group's pasture. The most consistently recovered parasite was Ostertagia ostertagi, and hypobiosis was observed.  相似文献
