Exercise-induced variations in their ventilatory mechanics were studied in 8 healthy ponies 4.2±1.4 years old and weighing 282±11 kg. Airflow (V), tidal volume (VT), esophageal pressure, mask pressure and electrocardiogram were simultaneously recorded before, during and after a treadmill (incline 8.3°) exercise which consisted of 2 min walking (1.5 m.sec-1), 3 min slow trotting (3.0 m.sec-1) and 3 min fast trotting (3.5 m.sec-1). The results of three consecutive daily measurements were averaged for each pony.Heart rate, minute volume (Ve), respiratory frequency (f) and peak inspiratory and expiratory V, mean inspiratory and expiratory V, and peak to peak changes in traspulmonary pressure (maxdPtp) increased linearly and significantly with increasing velocity (v) (R2=0.99). Tidal volume and the inspiratory time to total breathing time ratio showed a curvilinar relation with v (R2=0.99). Minute volume, maxdPtp, total pulmonary resistance (RL) and VT increased from rest to fast trot 6.7, 5.7, 1.5 and 1.6 times respectively. When the ponies stopped all these values decreased significantly. After 5 min recovery, the Ve was approximately doubled, VT and max dPtp unchanged and RL 30% smaller than their respective resting values. The exercise-induced increase in Ve was achieved by an increase in f at both low and high intensity of work.  相似文献

The skeletal muscle metabolism of horses with a wide range of cardiocirculatory capacities was studied during a standardised near-maximal exercise test in relation to muscle fibre composition. Although the same amount of work was performed by all horses the amount of triglycerides and glycogen utilised and lactate accumulated differed widely. Both blood and muscle lactate accumulation were positively related to the amount of glycogen utilised. These factors were in turn positively associated with the percentage of Type IIB fibres and consequently negatively associated with the percentage of Type IIA fibres. The percentage of Type IIB fibres was negatively correlated to the activities of the oxidative enzymes citrate synthase and 3-hydroxyacyl-CoA-dehydrogenase and positively associated with the lactate dehydrogenase activity. The results indicate that the horses with a high proportion of Type IIB fibres had a lower muscle oxidative capacity and were, therefore, for energy production, more dependent upon glycolysis with subsequent lactate accumulation than horses which had a high proportion of Type IIA fibres. The different metabolic properties of the muscle fibre types indicate that the pattern of muscle fibre recruitment could have a significant effect on intramuscular substrate utilisation.  相似文献

1. White Leghorn cockerels were exercised continuously for 45 minutes on a treadmill at work loads equivalent to 2.1 and 2.7 times pre‐exercise metabolic rates, the latter being close to the performance limits of the experimental birds.

2. Relative blood flow to the abdominal viscera and selected leg muscles was estimated using 113Sn‐, 153Gd‐ and 46Sc‐labelled microspheres, injected into the root of the aorta.

3. There was no significant shift of blood flow away from the viscera towards the leg muscles at either work load. However, relative colonic and duodenal blood flow fell significantly at both work loads and relative pancreatic blood flow doubled at the higher work load.

4. It is concluded that, as previously reported in female domestic fowl performing physical exercise close to their performance limits, male fowl are largely refractory to shifts in blood flow away from the viscera to the working muscles. Nevertheless, there is evidence of blood flow shifts between visceral organs, probably related to the intermediary metabolism of fuel substrates.  相似文献

The opioid neuropeptide haemorphin-7 was measured, by immunoreactivity, in Standardbred horses during low-speed (7 m/s) and high-speed (10 m/s) endurance exercises, lasting 49-58 and 12-16 min respectively. In parallel, heart rate, muscle temperature and plasma lactate concentrations were measured. The profile of the low-speed exercise showed significantly increased heart rate after 10 min [154 beats per minute (bpm)]. After the exercise, muscle temperature (42.1 degrees C) and plasma lactate (4.8 mmol/l) were significantly increased. The profile of the high-speed exercise was comparatively characterized by a higher increase of heart rate after 5 min (194 bpm) and higher increases of muscle temperature (43.2 degrees C) and lactate levels (15.8 mmol/l) after the exercise. The horses were probably exhausted by glycogen depletion in the low-speed exercise and by muscle pH decrease in the high-speed exercise. Haemorphin-7 increased significantly during the high-speed exercise (274.8 fmol/ml) but not during low speed (108.3 fmol/ml), coincident with the results of lactate. These results suggest that plasma haemorphin-7 is measurable in the horse by immunoreactivity, and that intense exercise stimulates release of this opioid. Such endogenous opioids are most likely involved in regulatory functions associated with pain, physical effort, inflammation, and blood pressure variation in horses, as have been established in other species.  相似文献

Six untrained mares were subjected to incremental treadmill exercise to examine exercise-induced changes in plasma renin activity (PRA) and plasma aldosterone (ALDO) and plasma arginine vasopressin (AVP) concentrations. Plasma renin activity, ALDO and AVP concentrations, and heart rate (HR) were measured at each step of an incremental maximal exercise test. Mares ran up a 6 degree slope on a treadmill set at an initial speed of 4 m/s. Speed was increased 1 m/s each minute until HR reached a plateau. Plasma obtained was stored at -80 C and later was thawed, extracted, and assayed for PRA and ALDO and AVP values by use of radioimmunoassay. Exercise caused significant increase in HR from 40 +/- 2 beats/min (mean +/- SEM) at rest to 206 +/- 4 beats/min (HRmax) at speed of 9 m/s. Plasma renin activity increased from 1.9 +/- 1.0 ng/ml/h at rest to a peak of 5.2 +/- 1.0 ng/ml/h at 9 m/s, paralleling changes in HR. Up to treadmill speed of 9 m/s, strong linear correlations were obtained between exercise intensity (and duration) and HR (r = 0.87, P less than 0.05) and PRA (r = 0.93, P less than 0.05). Heart rate and PRA reached a plateau and did not increase when speed was increased from 9 to 10 m/s. Plasma ALDO concentration increased from 48 +/- 16 pg/ml at rest to 191 +/- 72 pg/ml at speed of 10 m/s. Linear relation was found between exercise intensity (and duration) and ALDO concentration (r = 0.97, P less than 0.05).(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献

The heart rate and the pulmonary artery wedge pressure (PWP) was measured in 10 healthy warmblood horses and in six warmblood horses with atrial fibrillation (AF) at rest and during standardised treadmill exercise. During treadmill exercise, the increase in heart rate was significantly higher in the horses with AF than in the healthy horses. Horses with AF showed a significantly higher increase in PWP at treadmill velocities of 5m/s and faster, than did the healthy horses. The differences in PWP between both groups increased with treadmill strain. The present study demonstrates that there is an influence on the haemodynamics in horses with AF during treadmill exercise, which could explain exercise intolerance in some horses with lone AF.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of reduced muscle glycogen concentration on some physiological and metabolic responses during moderate intensity treadmill exercise in horses. Six Thoroughbred geldings were randomly allocated to 2 treatments (protocols A and B) or control in a 3 x 3 replicated Latin square design. In protocol A, horses performed low intensity exercise while horses in protocol B performed short bursts of high intensity exercise. Protocol A was designed to induce glycogen depletion mainly of slow twitch muscle fibers while protocol B aimed to deplete mainly fast twitch muscle fibers. Horses in the control group did not undergo exercise prior to the exercise test. Five hours after glycogen depletion, horses performed treadmill exercise at 60% VO2max at a treadmill slope of 10% until fatigue (20-30 min). The induced glycogen depletion prior to exercise had no significant effect on plasma glucose, insulin, or lactate concentrations during the exercise test, and there was no effect on glycogen utilization rate, although respiratory exchange ratios were lower in the glycogen-depleted groups. The VO2, heart rate and central blood temperature did not vary significantly between the protocols A and B and control throughout the exercise test. It was concluded that 20-30% depletion of glycogen concentration in the middle gluteal muscle resulted in a shift towards fat metabolism, but does not significantly affect heart rate, oxygen uptake, or concentrations of plasma glucose and lactate during moderate intensity exercise.  相似文献

Objective-To evaluate local tissue compatibility of doxycycline hyclate (DOX) in antebrachiocarpal joints of calves. Animals-10 healthy calves between 80 and 110 kg. Procedures-Calves were assigned to 2 treatment groups. Calves in groups DOX(low) and DOX(high) were administered 5 and 10 mg of DOX, respectively, locally in 1 antebrachiocarpal joint. The contralateral joint served as a control joint and was injected with 0.9% NaCl solution. General and local clinical findings were scored. Several variables were assessed in blood and synovial fluid for 9 days. Calves were euthanatized and pathologic changes and drug residues evaluated. Results-Throughout the study, none of the calves had clinical changes or abnormal hematologic values. Significant differences between treatment and control joints were evident only for matrix metalloproteinases at 0.5 hours after injection, with less activity for the DOX-treated joints in both treatment groups. Values for all synovial fluid variables, except nitric oxide, increased significantly during the first 12 to 72 hours after arthrocentesis in control and DOX-treated joints. Histologic examination revealed minimal infiltration of inflammatory cells independent of the treatment. No drug residues were detected 9 days after arthrocentesis in any tissues obtained from the liver, kidneys, fat, and skeletal muscles. Conclusions and Clinical Relevance-DOX had excellent intra-articular compatibility in healthy calves. Arthrocentesis induced a mild transient increase of inflammatory mediators in the synovial fluid. Significant decreases in matrix metalloproteinase activity in DOX-treated joints may indicate a potential chondroprotective effect of DOX.  相似文献

Twenty Rambouillet wether lambs were given ad libitum access to a diet with (BAA, n = 10) or without (control, n = 10) 1 ppm of the beta-adrenergic agonist L644,969. Lambs were fed to a constant slaughter weight end point of 54.5 kg. Carcasses were fabricated to yield bone-in and boneless cuts that were trimmed progressively to 1.27, .64, .32, and .00 cm of s.c. fat remaining. Addition of BAA did not affect growth traits. Actual and adjusted fat thickness, body wall thickness, and percentage of kidney-pelvic fat did not differ between control and BAA lambs. However, BAA increased longissimus muscle area, longissimus muscle depth, and leg score while decreasing USDA yield grade. The BAA increased carcass conformation scores and decreased flank lean color scores. No other carcass quality measurements were affected by BAA. Addition of BAA did not affect overall carcass yields of bone-in retail cuts. However, BAA increased overall carcass yields of boneless retail cuts regardless of fat trim level. The BAA increased bone-in leg yield. Yield of boneless sirloin, bone-in loin and boneless loin were not affected by BAA. For these cuts, the percentage change from the control was highly dependent on fat trim level. There was no difference in short-cut, shank-off, semiboneless leg yield between control and BAA. Addition of BAA did not affect yield of bone-in rack regardless of fat trim level. However, BAA greatly increased yield of boneless ribeye. The BAA did not affect yield of bone-in or boneless shoulder.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献

This study investigated the reliability of measurements with a new equine ergospirometer (Quadflow). Heart rate and blood lactate responses during exercise in horses wearing the Quadflow and an open flow mask were also compared. The mean percentage error of the oxygen uptake measurements was 8.2% (range 2.1-12.5%). Percent error for peak expiratory flow rates ranged from 6.1% to 9.4 %, and for minute ventilation from 2.5% to 7.4%. The coefficients of variation of the means of four measurements in two horses exercising continuously at 9.0 m/s were <5% for variables related to pulmonary ventilation, and was 7.7% for oxygen uptake. The Quadflow mask resulted in small increases in blood lactate concentration and relative heart rate during submaximal exercise. It was concluded that between- and within-test reliability statistics for important measurements in equine clinical exercise testing were acceptable for routine use in a veterinary practice or research laboratory.  相似文献

Ten susceptible and ten resistant pigs to malignant hyperthermia were used to observe the effects of exercise and ambient temperature on selected physiological parameters. Pigs were submitted to a ten minute exercise on a treadmill operating at a speed of 1.8 km/h and inclined to 11 degrees. Exercise in the first group was at an ambient temperature of 14 degrees C, and in the second at 29 degrees C. The right carotid artery was previously cannulated for blood pressure measurements and for repeated blood sampling during exercise. Arterial pressure, heart rate, rectal and cutaneous temperatures were recorded. Levels of cortisol, creatine kinase and its isoenzymes were measured. At 14 degrees C, exercise caused some physiological adjustments in susceptible animals; heart rate, skin temperature and cortisol levels increased (P less than 0.05). In resistant pigs, only the heart rate was elevated significantly following exertional stress at 14 degrees C. Exercise at 29 degrees C produced severe stress and marked physiological changes: heart rate, rectal and skin temperatures and cortisol levels increased significantly in both susceptible and resistant swine. At 29 degrees C, susceptible pigs also had higher levels of serum cortisol, total creatine kinase and MM isoenzyme (P less than 0.05) compared to resistant pigs. The results indicate that, following exertional or thermal stress, susceptible pigs undergo more extensive physiological changes than do resistant pigs. Similar levels of stress prior to slaughter may trigger physiological changes which in the susceptible pigs would likely result in pale, soft exudative myopathy.  相似文献

The objective of this study was to examine the effectiveness of CaCl2 infusion in overcoming the toughness of meat associated with dietary administration of a beta- adrenergic agonist (BAA) to lambs. Thirty-two crossbred (1/2 Finnsheep X 1/4 Dorset X 1/4 Rambouillet) wether lambs were randomly assigned to receive 0 or 4 ppm BAA (L644,969; Merck, Sharpe and Dohme Research Laboratories) in a completely mixed, high-concentrate diet for 6 wk. Animals were slaughtered in two groups of 16. At each slaughter time half of each group (0 or 4 ppm BAA) was randomly assigned to CaCl2 infusion. Feeding the BAA decreased (P less than .05) fat thickness, kidney-pelvic fat, yield grade, and marbling and increased (P less than .05) dressing percentage, lean firmness, leg score, and biceps femoris weight. Weight of biceps femoris was 32.8% greater in BAA-fed lambs. Treated, but not infused, lambs were significantly less tender than control lambs after 1, 7, and 14 d of postmortem storage. At 24 h postmortem, BAA-fed lambs had higher (P less than .05) cathepsin B, calcium-dependent protease-II (CDP-II), and CDP inhibitor activities. Calcium chloride infusion increased marbling, decreased lean firmness, increased lean color score, and increased dressing percentage (P less than .05). Infusion of carcasses with CaCl2 decreased (P less than .05) shear force at all postmortem times. Infusion of carcasses with CaCl2 had no effect on cathepsins B and B + L activities, but it had a significant effect on CDP-I, CDP-II, and CDP inhibitor activities.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献
