A new application of conventional electroless nickel plating to improve the interfacial properties of PBO fibers was reported. The relationship between surface morphology and interfacial properties of nickel-plated PBO fiber was explored. The continuous nickel coating consisted of nickel and phosphorus elements determined by Energy dispersive spectrometer (EDS) and transmission electron microscope (TEM), exhibiting high adhesive durability. The influence of bath temperature and plating time on the crystal structure, microstructure and mechanical properties of nickel-plated PBO fibers was systematically investigated. X-ray diffractometer (XRD) results revealed that the crystal structure among nickel-plated PBO fibers did not show differences. Scanning electron microscope (SEM) and Atomic force microscope (AFM) images showed that the process parameters had a great influence on surface morphology and roughness of nickel-plated PBO fibers, which could directly affect the interfacial properties of nickel-plated PBO fibers. Single fiber pull-out testing results indicated that the interfacial shear strength (IFSS) of PBO fibers after electroless nickel plating had a significant improvement, which reached maximum at 85 °C for 20 min. Single fiber tensile strength of nickel-plated PBO fibers was slightly lower than that of untreated one. Thermo gravimetric analysis (TGA) indicated that nickel-plated PBO fiber had excellent thermal stability.  相似文献

The surface of polysulfonamide (PSA) fiber was modified by air plasma to improve its wettability and interfacial bonding performance. The surface morphology and chemical composition of the fiber were then evaluated with fieldemission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM) and X-ray photoelectron spectrometry (XPS). Moreover, the wettability and interfacial bonding performance of fiber before and after air plasma treatment were examined by water absorption time and interfacial shear strength (IFSS). FESEM observation confirmed that PSA fiber surface roughened with prolonged treatment duration. XPS analysis showed that the O/C atomic ratio on the PSA fiber surface can be increased from 19.69 % to 38.59 % after 3 min of treatment. Water absorption time dropped from as much as 400 s to about 0 s, indicating that the wettability of the fiber greatly improved. Under the experimental conditions of 40 Pa pressure, 100 W power, and 3 min treatment duration, IFSS increased by 57.01 %, and the interfacial bonding performance of fiber greatly improved.  相似文献

The application of poly (p-phenylene-2, 6-benzobisoxazole) (PBO) fiber as reinforcement in composite material was restricted by its photo-degradation, therefore, some measures should be considered to protect PBO fiber against UV aging. In this study, A series of multilayer coating for (POSS/TiO2)n was prepared on PBO fiber surface via LbL assembly technique for enhancement of UV resistance. TiO2 as UV absorbing material was used to relieve UV-degradation of PBO. Surface elemental composition, surface morphology, mechanical and interfacial properties, and UV resistance of uncoated and coated PBO fibers were investigated. These experimental results show multilayer coating of (POSS/TiO2)n was uniform deposition on fiber surface after treatment, tensile strength decreased to certain extent, interfacial shear strength increased in a small range and UV resistance is obvious enhanced. After the same accelerated aging time under UV irradiation, the retention of tensile strength and intrinsic viscosity of coated PBO fibers were much better than that of untreated PBO fibers.  相似文献

The surface of para-aramid fiber was modified by phosphoric acid solutions (H3PO4) based on an orthogonal experimental design and analysis method. Statistical results indicate that treatment temperature is the most significant variable in the modification processing, while treatment time was the least important factor. The structure and morphology of the modified fiber were characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), X-ray diffraction instrument (XRD), and scanning electron microscope (SEM). The results showed that some polar groups were introduced into the molecular structure of aramid fibers and the physical structure of the treated fibers was not etched obviously. The interfacial properties of aramid fiber/epoxy composites were investigated by the single fiber pull-out test (SFP), and the mechanical properties of aramid fibers were investigated by the tensile strength test. The results showed that the interfacial shear strength (IFSS) of aramid/epoxy composites was remarkably improved and the breaking strength of aramid fibers was not affected appreciably after surface modification.  相似文献

The surface morphology of the CO2 laser treated grey cotton fabrics was studied which showed a characteristics sponge-like structure on cotton fibres after treating with CO2 laser irradiation. The laser treatment parameters ranging from 100 to 150 pixel time and 40 to 70 dot per inch (dpi) were irradiated on the grey cotton fabrics directly and the degree of physical modifications, such as surface morphology, wettability and fabric strength, were changed accordingly with various laser treatment parameters. The surface morphology, wettability and tensile strength of cotton fibre treating with laser were evaluated using different instruments, such as Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM), contact angle meter and tensile strength machine. In spite of creating a sponge-like structure on fibre surface after treating with laser, the wettability of the samples was highly improved but the tensile strength was decreased.  相似文献

The effect of atmospheric pressure plasma treatment on wettability and dyeability of polysulfonamide (PSA) yarns and aging behavior were investigated. The helium and helium/oxygen plasma-treated PSA yarns were stored for different time varying from 10 to 60 days at the condition of 25 °C and 65 % relative humidity. The water absorption time and K/S value were used to determine the wettability and dyeability of polysulfonamide yarns before and after plasma treatment. The changes in surface morphology and chemical composition were analyzed by Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) and X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS). The plasma treatments resulted in the decrease in water absorption time and the increase in K/S value, especially for the helium/oxygen plasma-treated PSA yarns dyed with cationic dyestuff. SEM observation confirmed that the PSA fiber surface was roughed and XPS analysis showed that the polar groups on PSA fiber surface increased after the plasma treatments. As plasma treatment time increased and oxygen gas was added, a greater degree of etching was achieved and more polar groups such as hydroxyl and carboxyl groups produced on PSA fiber surface, contributing to a better wettability and thus a better dyeability of the yarns. Almost no apparent aging effect was observed within 10 days. And then with the increasing storage time, the water absorption time and K/S value firstly quickly and then slowly increased and decreased. However, after 30 days, almost no aging effect was observed. The atmospheric pressure plasma treatment had no obviously influence on tensile strength of PSA yarns.  相似文献

Oxygen plasma pre-treatment was applied to cotton fabric with the aim of improving the water repellency performance of an inorganic-organic hybrid sol-gel perfluoroalkyl-functionalized polysilsesquioxane coating. Cotton fabric was pre-treated with low-pressure oxygen plasma for different treatment times and operating powers. Afterward, 1H,1H,2H,2H-perfluorooctyltriethoxysilane (SiF) was applied to the cotton fabric samples using the pad-dry-cure method. The surfaces of the untreated and modified cotton fibers were characterised using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, Xray photoelectron spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and atomic force microscopy. The water repellency of the SiF-coated fabric samples was evaluated using static and sliding contact angle measurements with water. The results show that the plasma treatment with the shortest treatment time (10 s) and the lowest operating current (0.3 A) increased the atomic oxygen/carbon ratio of the cotton fiber surface from 0.6 to 0.8 and induced the formation of a nano-sized grainy surface. Increasing the plasma treatment time and/or operating current did not intensify the surface changes of the cotton fibers. Such saturation effects were explained by the large influence of reactive oxygen atoms during the plasma treatment. The measured static water contact angles on the surface of the untreated and plasma pre-treated and SiF-coated cotton fabrics showed that the oxygen plasma pre-treatment enabled the increase of the water contact angle from 135° to ≈150°, regardless of the applied plasma treatment time and discharge power. This improvement in the hydrophobicity of the SiF coating was followed by a decrease in the sliding angle of water droplets by more than 10° compared to the plasma untreated and SiF-coated sample characterized by a water sliding angle of 45°. Additionally, measurements of the water sliding angle revealed that the increase of the static contact angle from 149° to 150° corresponded to a drop of the water sliding angle from 33 to 24°, which suggests that the plasma pre-treatment of 20 s at an operating current of 0.3 A produced the best water-repellent performance of the SiF-coated cotton fabric.  相似文献

A useful reinforcement for carbon fiber (CF) composites was found by performing the assisted electrophoretic deposition (EPD) of graphene oxide (GO) for carbon nanotubes (CNTs) onto the CF surface. GO-assisted EPD of CNTs was conducted without the use any other pre-treatment or additives in order to avoid destroying the structure of the CNTs and to facilitate preparation of stable dispersion that was suitable for EPD. The presence of GO-CNTs may effectively increase both the roughness and wettability of the CF surface, resulting in an improvement to the interfacial bonding strength between the CF and the epoxy (EP). In contrast to the pristine CF/EP composite, the GO-CNTs/CF/EP composite exhibited a 64.6 % increase in interlaminar shear strength. Meanwhile, the water absorption of the composites decreased from 0.36 wt.% to 0.14 wt.%. The variable surface morphology, surface roughness, surface free energy and surface chemical composition of the CF were considered to have had an effect on the interfacial properties of the CF/EP composites; these effects could be seen using atomic force microscopes, scanning electron microscopes, X-ray photoelectron microscopes and contact angle analysis characterizations.  相似文献

Effect of lipases on the surface properties of wheat straw   总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3
Surface characteristics of untreated and lipase-treated wheat straw (WS) have been investigated using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and SEM–Energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (SEM–EDX). Static contact angle of WS surface was determined by the pendant drop method. The WS thermal stability was also investigated using the thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). It was shown that the lipases from Candida cylindracea insignificantly changed the chemical group, microscopic morphology, and wettability of the WS inner surface. However, FTIR showed the lipases could effectively remove the hydrophobic lipophilic extractives and silica from the outer surface of untreated WS, and increased the hydroxyl group content in the outer surface. SEM images also exhibited the lipases stripped off the dense hydrophobic layer on the WS outer surface with the help of shear force. SEM–EDX analysis showed that the lipase treatment reduced Si content on the WS outer surface from 12.44 to 1.33%. The water contact angle of the WS outer surface decreased from 92.7° to 65.2° after lipase treatment, which indicated that the wettability of the lipase-treated WS outer surface was equivalent to that of the inner surface with a water contact angle of about 63°. Lipase-treated and untreated WS had a similar thermal stability. Therefore, the lipase treatment was one of the potential methods to improve the wettability of natural fibers in composite material processing. Comparative testing of particleboards produced from the whole WS untreated and treated by the lipases is under way to evaluate the overall effects of the lipase treatment on the improvement in their mechanic performances.  相似文献

Alkaline hydrolysis is one of the most classic fiber finishing methods, however, its potential as tuning surface superhydrophobicity in mass scale has not been studied much. In this research, fine roughness was formed on the polyester fiber surfaces by alkaline hydrolysis at room temperature and fluorinated polymer mixtures were further coated. The developed superhydrophobic fabrics were evaluated in terms of structural changes, mechanical properties, surface hydrophobicity, and permeability for practical applications. As alkaline hydrolysis treatment time increased, surface roughness was increased as a lot of nano-craters were generated with the decrease of fabrics weight and tensile strength as well. As air pockets formed through nano-craters on the fiber surfaces, static contact angle increased, and shedding angle tended to decrease. In this study, the sample treated with alkaline hydrolysis for 20 minutes showed the highest static contact angle of 167.8±1.3° and lowest shedding angle of 4.4±2.3°. Considering tensile strength loss, however, the 15-minute alkaline hydrolyzed fabrics which showed static contact angle of 162.2±2.7° and shedding angle of 8.8±0.2° was selected as the optimal condition for practical application. The newly developed superhydrophobic fabrics were found to have higher water vapor and air permeability than those of untreated samples. At the same time, fluoropolymer coating played a certain role for tensile strength and water vapor permeability demonstrating the importance of understanding and designing proper fluorinated-compound treatment processes.  相似文献

Jute fibers have immense potential to be used as natural fillers in polymeric matrices to prepare biocomposites. In the present study jute fibers were surface treated using two methods: i) alkali (NaOH) and ii) alkali followed by silane (NaOH+Silane) separately. Effects of surface treatments on jute fibers surface were characterized using fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) analyses. Further, the effects of surface treatments on jute fibers properties such as crystallinity index, thermal stability, and tensile properties were analyzed by X-ray diffraction method (XRD), thermo gravimetric analysis (TGA), and single fiber tensile test respectively. The effects of surface treatment of jute fibers on interphase adhesion between of poly(lactic acid) (PLA) and jute fibers were analyzed by performing single fiber pull-out test and was examined in terms of interfacial shear strength (IFSS) and critical fiber length.  相似文献

The work focuses on the influencing effect of fiber surface treatment by BP towards mechanical properties of BSF reinforced PLA composites. BSF were treated by BP to improve the adhesion between fibres and matrix. BSF (30 wt %) reinforced PLA (70 wt %) hybrid composites were fabricated by means of twin screw extrusion followed by injection molding process. Tensile strength, flexural strength and modulus were tested by means of UTM. The morphological analysis of the untreated and treated BSF reinforced PLA composites in comparison with virgin PLA was carried out by SEM to examine the existence of interfacial adhesion between BSF and PLA. The resultant data reveals that treated BSF restricts the motion of the PLA matrix due to better wettability and bonding. Consequently, mechanical properties like tensile and flexural moduli of BSF reinforced PLA composites were enhanced in comparison to virgin PLA and untreated BSF reinforced PLA composites. The results are discussed in detail.  相似文献

To improve interfacial adhesion between carbon fiber and epoxy resin, the epoxy matrix is modified with N-(2-aminoethyl)-3-aminopropylmethyldimethoxysilane (YDH602) and N-(2-aminoethyl)-3-aminopropyltrimethoxysilane (YDH792), respectively. And the effect of matrix modification on the mechanical performance of carbon/epoxy composites is investigated in terms of tensile, flexural and interlaminar properties. The flexural properties indicate that the optimum concentration of silane coupling agents YDH602 and YDH792 for the matrix modification is approximately 0.5 wt% of the epoxy resin system, and the mechanical properties of the YDH792-modified epoxy composites is better than that of the YDH602-modified epoxy composites at the same concentration. Compared to unmodified epoxy composite, the incorporation of 0.5 wt% YDH792 results in an increase of 4, 44 and 42 % in tensile, flexural and interlaminar shear strength (ILSS) values of the carbon/epoxy composite, respectively, while the corresponding enhancement of tensile and flexural modulus is 3 and 15 %. These improvements in mechanical properties can be considered to be an indication of better fiber/matrix interfacial adhesion as confirmed by SEM micrographs of the fracture surface after interlaminar shear testing. The viscosity of the modified epoxy resin system can be reduced by incorporation of silane coupling agent YDH792, which is beneficial for fiber impregnation or wetting during liquid composite molding process.  相似文献

In this study, jute fabrics were modified by alkali, micro-emulsion silicon (MS) and fluorocarbon based agents (FA) in order to enhance the interfacial adhesion between the polyester matrix and the jute fiber. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and contact angle measurements were used to characterize fiber surfaces. The effects of various surface treatments on the mechanical and morphological of jute/polyester composites were also studied. All surface treatments were shown to improve the tensile, flexural strengths and interlaminar shear strengths of the composites. Moreover, the maximum improvement in the mechanical properties was obtained for the FA treated jute/polyester composites. SEM micrographs of the tensile fracture surface of jute/unsaturated polyester composites also exhibited improvement of interfacial and interlaminar shear strengths by the alkali, MS and FA treatments of jute fibers.  相似文献

Multi-functional comonomer from pentaerythritol (PE) and terephthaloyl chloride (TPC) was synthesized and used for polymerization of poly(p-phenylene benzobisoxazole) (PBO) copolymer. PBO copolymer fibers were prepared from PBO copolymers using a dry-jet wet spinning. The tensile strength of PBO copolymer fibers was higher than that of PBO, and showed 42 % increase at 0.5 mol% loading of comonomer. The tensile modulus of PBO copolymer fiber at 0.5 mol% loading showed 192 % increase compared to PBO fiber. The compressive strength of PBO copolymer fiber had values between 0.46 GPa and 0.6 GPa with the comonomer content. 64-114 % increase in compressive strength of PBO copolymer fibers was observed compared to PBO fiber.  相似文献

Kevlar fibers were treated in three kinds of coupling agents’ solutions by Co60 γ-ray co-irradiation. After the treatment, the interlaminar shear strength (ILSS) values of Kevlar fibers/epoxy composites were all improved. Surface elements of the fibers were determined by energy dispersive X-ray microanalysis (EDX). X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) indicated that the oxygen/carbon ratio of the treated fibers was increased and Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectrum confirmed the increase in the polar groups at the fiber surface. The tensile strength of the fibers was evaluated by statistical analysis using the Weibull distribution. The wettability of the fiber surface was also enhanced by the treatment. The possible mechanisms of γ-ray co-irradiation treatment are proposed by the radical reactions. The results indicated that γ-ray co-irradiation technique modified the physicochemical properties of Kevlar fibers and improved the interfacial adhesion of its composites.  相似文献

We report the preparation of polybenzoxazole (PBO) fiber from polyhydroxyamide (PHA) precursor fiber which is free from strong acid such as polyphosphoric acid. We prepared the PHA fibers with different spin-draw ratios (SDRs) using a wet-spinning method and the PBO fibers with an SDR of 3.5 (SDR-3.5 PBO fibers) were prepared by various heat-treatment temperatures, and investigated their morphology, crystalline structure, and mechanical properties. The simultaneous thermogravimetric analysis-mass spectrometry (STA-MS) and field-emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM) results confirmed that the diameter of the SDR-3.5 PBO fiber was much smaller than that of the SDR-3.5 PHA fiber, due to the release of water during the thermal cyclization reaction which forms the PBO structure. The wide-angle Xray diffraction (WAXD) pattern of the SDR-3.5 PBO fiber heat-treated at 350 °C (SDR-3.5 PBO 350 fiber) showed two peaks, at 2θ=14.83 ° and 24.38 °, and the diffraction angles dropped with increasing heat-treatment temperature. In addition, the initial modulus and tensile strength of the SDR-3.5 PBO fiber heat-treated at 550 °C (SDR-3.5 PBO 550 fiber) were found to be 19.1 GPa and 449.2 MPa, which were much higher than those of the SDR-3.5 PHA fiber, 9.3 GPa and 227.0 MPa, respectively.  相似文献

Chemical treatment of natural fibers is a well-defined means of mechanical property improvement in natural fiberreinforced composites. An understanding of mechanical and thermal properties in these media is essential for evaluating heat transfer, thermal degradation, and overall performance of these composites over their product lifetime. However, very little information is available illustrating the effect of such treatment on the thermal properties of kenaf composites. Also, no study to date has reported the thermal conductivity of individual kenaf fibers. This study reports the effects of fiber treatment (in 6 % NaOH) on thermal transport in unidirectionally oriented kenaf-epoxy composites and individual kenaf fibers. The effective thermal conductivities and thermal diffusivities of chemically treated fiber composites show a general increase over untreated fiber composites (0.210 to 0.232 W/m/K at 28 °C, 0.206 to 0.234 W/m/K at 200 °C). This improvement may be attributed to improved interfacial contact between the fibers and epoxy matrix shown in microstructural images after chemical treatment. The thermal conductivity of individual fibers was evaluated at room temperature using two techniques. Results from both techniques showed slight increases after chemical treatment (0.58±0.53 to 1.0±0.13 W/m/K and 1.2±0.54 to 1.6±0.28 W/m/K) but lacked statistical significance. Any improvement in surface crystallinity after chemical treatment does not appear to affect overall fiber thermal conductivity. A better understanding of thermal transport in kenaf fibers and composites enables better estimation of the performance of these composites in different applications. Moreover, the thermal conductivities of individual fibers are useful in understanding the fiber’s contribution to conduction in different fiber reinforcement configurations.  相似文献

Sansevieria (genus) cylindrica (species) belongs to Agavaceae family plant fiber first time used as a reinforcing agent in the epoxy system. Fibre extracted from leaves, fairly lesser density, porosity, higher strength to weight ratio (hereafter called SCF) and these fibers were alkali-treated and yet impregnated on the epoxy system using wet hand lay up technique in order to compare with untreated fiber on performance. DMA, TGA, DSC, FTIR, SEM, degradation temperature, flexural and tensile tests were performed for untreated and alkali-treated epoxy composites using different SCF volumes viz. 1 vol.%, 5 vol.%, 7 vol.% and 9 vol.%. Alkali treated fibre were found to have higher initial and final degradation temperatures and flexural and tensile strength. The removal of the amorphous hemi-cellulose on alkali treatment was played an instrumental in improving properties. A 3 °C increase in glass transition temperature and decomposition temperature were recorded respectively and over all treated SCF composites reinforced on the epoxy were shown significant results than untreated. Storage modulus and tan ?? were observed well at 9 vol.% treated SCF while flexural and tensile were increased by 35 and 13 % for SCF treated composites respectively.  相似文献
