In a survey of 2500 market weight pigs in a Saskatchewan abattoir, 37% were infected with adult Ascaris suum and in 46% there were milkspot hepatic lesions. A total of 60% of the pigs examined had some evidence of A. suum infection. Most infected pigs contained less than 50 adult ascarids.

In a second abattoir survey of a further 2500 market weight pigs, 44% of the animals had milk-spot hepatic lesions. In approximately 12% of the affected pigs these lesions were very severe and a very similar proportion of pigs' livers were condemned or sent for use as animal feed.

The results of these surveys are discussed with particular reference to the significance of A. suum infection in growing pigs in Saskatchewan.

The effects of birth weight (BiW; low BiW [LBW] vs. high BiW [HBW]) and estimated breeding value (EBV) for protein deposition (low EBV [LBV] vs. high EBV [HBV]) on N retention, N efficiency, and concentrations of metabolites in plasma and urine related to N efficiency in growing pigs were studied. At an age of 14 wk, 10 LBW–LBV (BiW: 1.07 ± 0.09 [SD] kg; EBV: −2.52 ± 3.97 g/d, compared with an average crossbred pig with a protein deposition of 165 g/d), 10 LBW–HBV (BiW: 1.02 ± 0.13 kg; EBV: 10.47 ± 4.26 g/d), 10 HBW–LBV (BiW: 1.80 ± 0.13 kg; EBV: −2.15 ± 2.28 g/d), and 10 HBW–HBV (BiW: 1.80 ± 0.15 kg; EBV: 11.18 ± 3.68 g/d) male growing pigs were allotted to the experiment. The pigs were individually housed in metabolism cages and were subjected to an N balance study in two sequential periods of 5 d, after an 11-d dietary adaptation period. Pigs were assigned to a protein adequate (A) or protein restricted (R, 70% of A) regime in a change-over design. Pigs were fed 2.8 times the energy requirements for maintenance. Nontargeted metabolomics analyses were performed in urine and blood plasma samples. The N retention (in g/d) was higher in the HBW than in the LBW pigs (P < 0.001). The N retention (in g/[kg metabolic body weight (BW0.75) · d]) and N efficiency, however, were not affected by the BiW of the pigs. The N retention (P = 0.04) and N efficiency (P = 0.04) were higher in HBV than in LVB pigs on the A regime but were not affected by EBV in pigs on the R regime. Restricting the dietary protein supply with 30% decreased the N retention (P < 0.001) but increased the N efficiency (P = 0.003). Nontargeted metabolomics showed that a hexose, free amino acids (AA), and lysophosphatidylcholines were the most important metabolites in plasma for the discrimination between HBV and LBV pigs, whereas metabolites of microbial origin contributed to the discrimination between HBV and LBV pigs in urine. This study shows that BiW does not affect N efficiency in the later life of pigs. Nitrogen efficiency and N retention were higher in HBV than in LBV pigs on the A regime but similar in HBV and LBV pigs on the R regime. In precision feeding concepts aiming to further optimize protein and AA efficiency in pigs, the variation in EBV for protein deposition of pigs should be considered as a factor determining N retention, growth performance, and N efficiency.  相似文献

An indirect solid-phase microradioimmunoassay (IRIA) was developed for detection and quantitation of antibodies to pseudorabies virus (PRV) in swine serum. Qualitative results of the IRIA compared closely with results of the serum neutralization test (NT) and the microimmunodiffusion test (MIDT). The IRIA was more sensitive than the NT for detection of antibodies to PRV in swine serum. The IRIA result is expressed numerically. With the IRIA and NT, antibody to PRV was first detectable in 3 experimentally infected pigs at 9 days after inoculation. With MIDT, antibody was detected in the 3 experimentally infected pigs at 9 days after inoculation. With the MIDT, antibody was detected in the 3 experimentally infected pigs at 7, 8, and 9 days after inoculation. The IRIA results are obtainable within a few hours; the NT and MIDT require 48 hours for completion.  相似文献

Twenty-five experimental and five control hysterectomy derived pigs were raised colostrum free under specific pathogen-free conditions. The experimental pigs were first inoculated with A. suum eggs at 8 weeks of age, and a second dose of infective eggs was given 15 days later. They were necropsied from 4 to 10 days post second infection. The ulcers found in the stomach of these pigs were confined to the esophagogastric area. A sequence of epithelial changes, erosions, and ulceration was seen in the stratified squamous epithelium. Edema and hemorrhage were noted in the lamina propria and submucosa. Vascular changes in the area were characterized by thickening of the wall and presence of thrombi in arteries as well as cellular degeneration and vacuolization of the media and intima of the veins.Changes in the muscularis were characterized by edema and degeneration of the muscle cells, which later were replaced by fibroblasts and heavy infiltration by eosinophils.Three of the control pigs received one dose of A. suum eggs, and were killed one on each of the 8th, 9th, and 10th days post infection. The remaining two pigs received no infective material and were killed when they were 11 weeks of age. Neither the uninoculated pigs nor the once-inoculated animals developed ulcerations in their stomachs. The possible mechanisms by which esophagogastric lesions are produced following A. suum larval migrations are discussed.  相似文献

Groups of piglets 20 to 28 days of age were dosed with 50 or 10 000 Ascaris suum eggs. The pigs were sacrificed from day 16 post infection onwards and worms present in the intestine were counted. Large numbers of immature parasites were recovered initially following the 10 000 egg dose, but the numbers decreased rapidly with the and worms were not found in pigs examined in the late prepatent phase. All pigletts infected with 50 eggs were found to harbour worms and the infection reached patency. The high level infections resulted in an eosinophil response which reached maximum values during the second week after infection. The low level infections which resulted in patency were not followed by any significant eosinophil response.  相似文献

This study was conducted to evaluate the supplementation of glutamic acid(Glu)to reduced protein diets on the performance of weanling pigs. One hundred and eighty crossbred weanling pigs([YorkshireLandrace]Duroc,21 d old)having similar body weight(BW)of 6.45 kg were randomly allotted to 1 of 6 dietary treatments(5 pigs per pen[2 barrows and 3 gilts];6 pens per treatment)based on BW and sex during a 6-week trial.Dietary treatments consisted of positive control(PC)diet formulated to have 226.9,205.6,and 188.8 g crude protein(CP)during phases 1,2,and 3,respectively,and negative control(NC)diets with 20 g CP reduction from PC diets and addition of Glu with increasing levels, resulting in the calculated Lys-to-Glu ratios of 1:2.25,1:2.30.1:2.35,1:2.40,and 1:2.45,designated as NC,NC1,NC2,NC3,and NC4,respectively.The BW of pigs receiving PC diet was higher(P<0.05)than those receiving NC diet at d 7,21 and 42.A higher(P<0.05)average daily gain(ADG)from d 1 to 7,8 to 21,22 to 42 and during the overall experiment period was observed in pigs fed PC than NC diet.Pigs fed NC diets including the graded level of Glu linearly increased(P<0.05)BW at d 42,ADG and gain-to-feed ratio(G:F)during the overall experimental period. In addition, trends in linear increase in BW(P=0.056)at d 7 and ADG from d 1 to 7 and d 22 to 42(linear effect,P=0.081,P=0.058 respectively)were observed.A tendency in the linear increment of NH3(P=0.082)at d 21 and linear reduction in methyl mercaptans(P=0.054)emission at d 42 was observed in pigs fed NC diets supplemented with graded level of Glu.In conclusion, supplementing the reduced protein diet with Glu enhanced the growth performance in weanling pigs suggesting that supplementation of Glu can compensate the reduction of 2%CP in the basal diets.  相似文献

Study objectives were to determine the effects of continuously infusing glucose (GLC) or casein (CAS) into the terminal ileum on biomarkers of metabolism, inflammation, and intestinal morphology in growing pigs. Crossbred gilts (n = 19; 81 ± 3 kg body weight [BW]) previously fitted with T-cannulas at terminal ileum were used in the current experiment. Following 4 d of acclimation, pigs were enrolled in 2 experimental 4-d periods (P). During P1, pigs were housed in individual pens and fed ad libitum for collection of baseline parameters. At the beginning of P2, pigs were assigned to 1 of 3 infusion treatments: 1) control (CON; water; 3 liters/d; n = 7), 2) GLC (dextrose 50%; 500 g/d; n = 6;), or 3) CAS (casein sodium salt; 300 g/d; n = 6). Water, GLC, and CAS solutions were continuously infused at a rate of 125 mL/h for the entirety of P2. Animals were euthanized at the end of P2, and intestinal tissue was collected. During P2, average daily feed intake differed across treatments and was reduced in GLC compared with CON pigs (14%), while CAS pigs consumed an intermediate amount (P = 0.05). Average daily gain and final BW were similar across treatments. A treatment by time interaction was observed for blood urea nitrogen (BUN; P < 0.01), as it decreased in GLC (21%) while it gradually increased in CAS (76%) pigs relative to CON pigs. Mild hyperthermia occurred with both GLC and CAS infusions relative to CON (+0.3 and 0.2 °C, respectively; P < 0.01). Blood neutrophils increased in CAS relative to CON pigs (26%) but remained similar between CON and GLC treatments (P < 0.01). Blood monocytes decreased in GLC relative to CON pigs (24%) while CAS pigs had an intermediate value (P = 0.03). Circulating lipopolysaccharide binding protein tended to decrease in GLC (29%) relative to CON pigs but remained similar between CON and CAS pigs (P = 0.10). Plasma tumor necrosis factor-alpha was similar across treatments. Ileum villus height:crypt depth was increased in CAS compared with CON pigs (33%; P = 0.05) while GLC pigs had an intermediate value. Colon myeloperoxidase-stained area increased in CAS compared with CON pigs (45%; P = 0.03) but remained similar between GLC and CON pigs. In summary, continuously infusing GLC or CAS into the terminal ileum appeared to stimulate a mild immune response and differently altered BUN patterns but had little or no effects on blood inflammatory markers, intestinal morphology, or key production parameters.  相似文献

In a continuous biogas plant, receiving manure from 200 dairy cows and 400 calves and young stock, survival of salmonellas and Ascaris suum eggs was studied. The bacteria and parasite eggs were kept in filter sacs in the manure that had a temperature of 55°C. No viable salmonellas or Ascaris suum eggs could be found after 24h in the digester.Survival of salmonellas and Ascaris suum eggs was also studied in the manure pit where the manure was stored after digestion. The temperature in the manure pit varied between 22–27°C. Salmonellas survived 35 but not 42 days. On day 56, when the experiments had to be stopped, 60% of the Ascaris eggs were viable.  相似文献

The influence of A. suum infection on the haematology, liver-related serum enzymes, blood urea and live weight gain in Mukota and Large White (LW) weaner pigs was compared. Six pigs of each genotype were infected with a single dose of 4000 A. suum eggs per pig and another six were not. The pigs were kept for 100 days. Blood was collected daily for the first 7 days and also after 100 days. In the infected pigs, there was an increase (p<0.05) in alanine aminotransferase (ALT) activity in the LW but not in the Mukota pigs. Although the alkaline phosphatase (ALP) activity rose (p<0.05) in both infected and non-infected LW pigs from day 1 to day 3, the activity in the non-infected LW pigs then decreased, while that of the infected LW pigs remained elevated. The infected LW pigs had higher (p<0.05) levels of ALT, ALP and aspartate aminotransferase than their non-infected counterparts. Non-infected LW pigs tended to have higher (p<0.05) haematological parameters, daily weight gain and urea concentrations than infected LW pigs, but these differences were not significant. These preliminary findings suggest that more A. suum larvae reached the livers in the LW than in the Mukota pigs and that the latter may be more resistant to A. suum infection.  相似文献

Weanling pigs were exposed to Salmonella cholerae-suis var. kunzendorf and sixteen days later were inoculated with infective Ascaris suum eggs. Necropsy at seventeen days post-Ascaris-infection revealed fewer lesions of hepatic fibrosis and a lesser degree of tissue eosinophilia in the hepatic interstitium in pigs receiving inoculations of Salmonella and Ascaris compared to those receiving Ascaris inoculation only. The numbers of juvenile nematodes recovered from the small intestines of both groups were variable. The comparatively less-intensive hepatic lesions may have been caused by reduction of the number of penetrating larvae at the intestinal level. Alternatively, the decreased tissue eosinophilia and fibrosis of the liver may be due to the previous stress of the Salmonella infection.  相似文献

Dietary fiber, resistant to host-mediated digestion in the small intestine due to lack of endogenous enzymes, impacts many facets of animal health and is associated with gut development especially in young monogastrics. Furthermore, it can be used as in-feed antibiotic alternative. Chicory (Cichorium intybus L.) forage with high content of pectin (uronic acids as building blocks) is a novel class of dietary fiber that is chemically different from cereal grains (with high content of arabinoxylans). In the present study, we investigated effects of dietary inclusion of chicory forage on digestibility, gut morphology and microbiota in broilers and young pigs. In the chicken experiment, 160 1-d old broiler chicks were fed 3 nutritionally balanced diets for 30 d including a cereal-based diet and 2 diets with part of the cereals substituted with 60 and 120 g/kg chicory forage (CF60 and CF120), whereas in the pig experiment, 18 seven-wk old Yorkshire pigs were fed 3 diets for 18 d including a cereal-based diet and 2 diets with 80 and 160 g/kg chicory forage inclusion (CF80 and CF160). Our results showed that young pigs were capable to utilize chicory forage well with higher total tract apparent digestibility (TTAD) of all fiber fractions, particularly uronic acid, compared with the control (P < 0.01). In contrast, a decreased TTAD of all fiber fractions was observed in chickens fed on diet CF120 (P < 0.05). Moreover, diet induced changes in gut morphology were observed in the large intestine of chickens. The alteration of cecal mucosal thickness was further positively correlated with TTAD of non-starch polysaccharides (NSP) and its constituent sugars (P < 0.05). In addition, in pigs, terminal restriction fragment length polymorphism (T-RFLP) analysis of intestinal microbiota revealed substantial dietary effects (cereal control diet vs. chicory forage inclusion) on the relative abundance of 2 dominant bacterial phylotypes (Prevotella sp. vs. Roseburia sp.) respectively (P < 0.05). In conclusion, our data showed that chicory forage (Cichorium intybus L.), a novel dietary fiber source in animal nutrition, have potential beneficial properties as fiber ingredient in diets for both pigs and chickens.  相似文献

The concentrations of copper, zinc and molybdenum were measured in liver samples from 21 normal slaughter pigs (average age about 6 months) and in 36 sows (average age about 2 years). The following mean values were found: Slaughter pigs: 15 ± 8 µg Cu/g, 45 ± 7 μg Zm/g and 1.0 ± 0.2 μg Mo/g wet weight; sows: 46 ± 70 μg Cu/g, 70 ± 26 μg Zn/g and 1.3 ± 0.3 μg Mo/g wet weight. The concentrations of all 3 elements were significantly higher in the sows than in the young pigs. There was no correlation between the concentrations of copper, zinc or molybdenum. The recorded copper levels in the slaughter pigs were in accordance with the levels of non-supplemented pigs given in the literature. The soluble hepatic copper- and zinc-binding proteins were separated into 3 different fractions by gel filtration. With increasing copper and zinc levels in the liver, a higher relative amount of these elements were found in the low molecular weight fraction.  相似文献

Study objectives were to determine the effects of rapamycin (Rapa) on biomarkers of metabolism and inflammation during acute heat stress (HS) in growing pigs. Crossbred barrows (n = 32; 63.5 ± 7.2 kg body weight [BW]) were blocked by initial BW and randomly assigned to 1 of 4 environmental-therapeutic treatments: 1) thermoneutral (TN) control (n = 8; TNCon), 2) TN and Rapa (n = 8; TNRapa), 3) HS control (n = 8; HSCon), or 4) HS and Rapa (n = 8; HSRapa). Following 6 d of acclimation to individual pens, pigs were enrolled in two experimental periods (P). During P1 (10 d), pigs were fed ad libitum and housed in TN conditions (21.3 ± 0.2°C). During P2 (24 h), HSCon and HSRapa pigs were exposed to constant HS (35.5 ± 0.4°C), while TNCon and TNRapa pigs remained in TN conditions. Rapamycin (0.15 mg/kg BW) was orally administered twice daily (0700 and 1800 hours) during both P1 and P2. HS increased rectal temperature and respiration rate compared to TN treatments (1.3°C and 87 breaths/min, respectively; P < 0.01). Feed intake (FI) markedly decreased in HS relative to TN treatments (64%; P < 0.01). Additionally, pigs exposed to HS lost BW (4 kg; P < 0.01), while TN pigs gained BW (0.7 kg; P < 0.01). Despite marked changes in phenotypic parameters caused by HS, circulating glucose and blood urea nitrogen did not differ among treatments (P > 0.10). However, the insulin:FI increased in HS relative to TN treatments (P = 0.04). Plasma nonesterified fatty acids (NEFA) increased in HS relative to TN treatments; although this difference was driven by increased NEFA in HSCon compared to TN and HSRapa pigs (P < 0.01). Overall, circulating white blood cells, lymphocytes, and monocytes decreased in HS compared to TN pigs (19%, 23%, and 33%, respectively; P ≤ 0.05). However, circulating neutrophils were similar across treatments (P > 0.31). The neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) was increased in HS relative to TN pigs (P = 0.02); however, a tendency for reduced NLR was observed in HSRapa compared to HSCon pigs (21%; P = 0.06). Plasma C-reactive protein tended to differ across treatments (P = 0.06) and was increased in HSRapa relative to HSCon pigs (46%; P = 0.03). Circulating haptoglobin was similar between groups. In summary, pigs exposed to HS had altered phenotypic, metabolic, and leukocyte responses; however, Rapa administration had limited impact on outcomes measured herein.  相似文献

The capacity of various developmental stages of Ascaris suum to induce a protective immune response in the guinea pig model was evaluated. Larvated eggs, second, third or fourth stage larvae were injected into guinea pigs by either the suncutaneous, intramuscular, ear vein or mesenteric vein route. Animals were challenged with a mesenteric vein injection of artificially hatched infective larvae of A. suum. Second stage larvae produced the highest degree of immunity and fourth stage larvae produced the least protection comparing all routes of administration. The most effective route of immunization for all the developmental stages was the mesenteric vein. Antibody titer as assessed by indirect hemagglutination was not correlated with the degree of protection.  相似文献

A total of 567 young pigs entering one of the national testing stations were tested for sensitivity to halothane between October 1976 and May 1978. They included 443 Landrace, 76 Large White and 48 Irish Welsh. The average weight at testing was 25.6 kg. A total of 24 pigs reacted positively to the test, 21 (4.6%) of the Landrace and 3 (6.3%) of the Irish Welsh. No reactors were found in the Large White breed.Meat quality estimates in the form of the pH in the longissimus dorsi muscle 45 min post-mortem (pH1) were recorded on the 324 slaughtered pigs. Reactor pigs (ten) had significantly lower values than non-reactors, indicating a greater tendency to develop quality problems such as pale, soft, exudative (PSE) meat. There was an indication that reactor pigs might have slightly reduced daily gains and lower backfat thickness.  相似文献

The goal of the current experiment was to assess the clinical efficacy of oxfendazole (OFZ) administered as a single oral dose (30 mg/kg) to pigs naturally parasitized with Ascaris suum, Oesophagostomum spp., Metastrongylus spp. and Trichuris suis. Thirty-six local ecotype piglets were divided into three independent experiments, named I, II and III (n = 12 each), respectively. Each experiment involved two different groups (n = 6): Untreated Control and OFZ treated. Animals were naturally parasitized with A. suum (Experiments I, II and III), Oesophagostomum spp. (Experiments I and II), T. suis (Experiments II and III) and Metastrongylus spp. (Experiment I). Pigs in the treated group received OFZ (Synanthic®, Merial Ltd., 9.06% suspension) orally at 30 mg/kg dose. At five (5) days post-treatment, animals were sacrificed and the clinical efficacy of the OFZ treatment was established following the currently available WAAVP guidelines for a controlled efficacy test. None of the animals involved in this experiment showed any adverse events during the study. OFZ treatment given as a single 30 mg/kg oral dose showed a 100% efficacy against all the nematode parasites present in the three experiments. In conclusion, under the current experimental conditions, OFZ orally administered to naturally parasitized piglets at a single dose of 30 mg/kg was safe and highly efficacious (100%) against adult stages of A. suum, Oesophagostomum spp., T. suis and Metastrongylus spp.  相似文献

The effects on growing pigs of substituting 4.5 and 9 % of soy bean meal with a corresponding amount of single cell protein produced from sulphite spent liquor in a diet based on cereals and fish meal have been studied. The concentration of lignosulphonic acids in the single cell protein product was found to be 0.6 % ± 0.2 % (m. ± s). No differences in the weight gain, feed conversion ratio or fat thickness of the pigs, as compared with the controls, were observed when fed single cell protein-containing diets from about 29 to 80 kg in the course of 11 weeks. Nor were any effects found on addition of 0.15 % of methionine to the diets.  相似文献

Pseudorabies virus (PRV) antibodies, detectable by indirect radioimmunoassay (IRIA), serum-virus neutralization test (NT), or microimmunodiffusion test (MIDT) were developed within 8 days after pigs were inoculated with virulent PRV or attenuated PRV vaccine. Indirect radioimmunoassay and NT titers in pigs inoculated with virulent PRV were developed at the same rate, with IRIA titers being higher than NT titers. Pigs inoculated with attenuated or inactivated PRV vaccine developed peak mean prechallenge NT antibody titers of 4 and 1 (reciprocals of serum dilutions), respectively. Pigs inoculated with attenuated PRV vaccine had peak mean prechallenge IRIA antibody titers of 6, whereas pigs inoculated with inactivated PRV vaccine had mean IRIA antibody titers of 64. Challenge exposure of swine inoculated with attenuated or inactivated PRV vaccine elicited quantitatively equivalent responses, as measured by IRIA or NT, which were higher than prechallenge titers. There were no false-positive IRIA, NT, or MIDT results obtained when sera from nonvaccinated, nonchallenge-exposed pigs were tested. It appears that the PRV infection status of a seropositive swine herd could be ascertained by serologically monitoring several representative animals from a herd, using the NT. If 2 or more tests of representative animals at 14-day intervals were done and the mean NT titer was 4 or less, it could be concluded that the herd was vaccinated against, but not infected with, virulent virus.  相似文献

Ascaris suum is the most important internal parasite in farmed pigs world-wide. In England, the BPEX Pig Health Scheme (BPHS) monitors the prevalence of ascariosis in slaughtered finished pigs by identifying milk spots - the healing lesions caused by A. suum larvae migration through the liver. This study investigates the trend of milk spot lesions from July 2005 to December 2010 to identify the progress made by the industry in controlling this parasitic disease. For visual explorations, the monthly prevalence for milk spots was modelled using “STL”, a seasonal-trend decomposition method based on locally weighted regression. Random effects binomial modelling accounting for clustering at batch level was used to test the significance of the trend and seasonality. Additionally, the differences in the milk spot prevalence trends for BPHS members (those that joined the scheme) and non-members were investigated and tested. A mean of 12,442 pigs was assessed per month (in 290 batches) across 12 pig abattoirs over the study period, from which a monthly mean of 7102 pigs (159 batches) came from BPHS members. A mild overall decrease in prevalence of milk spots over the monitored period was identified as well as a seasonal variation which showed peaks in summer and at the beginning of autumn. BPHS members maintained a lower prevalence than non-members. The results from this work illustrate ascariosis as a persistent problem in current farm production.  相似文献

A tube latex agglutination test (LAT) for diagnosis of Mycoplasma hyopneumoniae swine pneumonia was developed. In pigs inoculated with M. hyopneumoniae, LAT antibodies were generally detected 2–3 weeks post-inoculation, which was 1 week or more before complement-fixing antibodies were first detected in the corresponding pigs. Correlation of LAT results and gross and microscopic lung lesions of corresponding pigs revealed that LAT titers persisted after the pneumonic lesions had resolved.Latex agglutination titers in pigs exposed by contact with M. hyopneumoniae inoculated pigs were demonstrated 4–12 weeks post-contact.Latex agglutination antibodies were detected up to 48 weeks post-inoculation in pigs inoculated with M. hyopneumoniae and this was similar to the duration of detectable indirect hemagglutination titers. Complement-fixation titers, however, were demonstrated no longer than 28 weeks post-inoculation in corresponding pigs.Evaluation of repeatability of LAT results revealed some variation of LAT titers of sera titered on four different occasions.Sera from pigs inoculated with other swine mycoplasmas, including M. hyosynoviae and M. hyorhinis, did not react in the M. hyopneumoniae LAT. In addition, no detectable titers were demonstrated in the M. hyopneumoniae LAT using sera from pigs infected with Metastrongylus spp., Ascaris suum, or in sera from pigs vaccinated with any of four commonly used swine vaccines.  相似文献
