Genetic parameters for faecal nematode egg count were estimated in naturally infected Barbari goats maintained at the Central Institute for Research on Goats, Makhdoom, Mathura, India, over a period of 5 years (1999 through 2003). Faecal egg count (FEC) data on 891 records of Barbari goats descended from 69 bucks and 241 does were used in this study. Analyses were carried out by restricted maximum likelihood (REML), fitting an animal model and ignoring or including maternal genetic or permanent environmental effects. Three different animal models were fitted. Direct heritability estimates were inflated substantially for this trait when maternal effects were ignored. The direct heritability estimates for the trait ranged from 0.05 to 0.13 depending on the model used. Low (0.04) maternal heritability estimate was observed for this trait in our study. Moderate estimate of the fraction of variance due to maternal permanent environmental effects (c(2)) for faecal egg count (c(2)=0.10) was also observed. Results suggest that direct and permanent environmental maternal effects were important for this trait, however, maternal additive effects had less impact on this trait. 相似文献

Limited information is available on differences between sheep breeds with respect to helminth resistance under temperate conditions. The present study was designed to confirm and extend preliminary findings on observed breed differences in resistance to naturally acquired gastrointestinal nematodes in Suffolk and Texel sheep. Three trials were carried out. In trial 1 (1999-2003) lambs co-grazed from birth were faecal sampled at various time points up to 17 weeks of age. Worm burden was assessed at 17 weeks of age from a minimum of six lambs per breed in each of the 3 years. In trial 2, faecal egg count (FEC) was determined on six farms with co-grazed Suffolk and Texel purebred lambs. In trial 3 (2001-2003), ewes were faecal sampled at winter housing. In all three trials, an influence of breed on resistance to naturally acquired trichostrongyle infection was demonstrated. In trial 1, significantly higher FEC and worm burden was observed in Suffolk compared with Texel lambs following natural challenge. In trial 2, FEC recorded in lambs from six farms confirmed the breed differences previously observed. A breed difference in resistance to GI parasites was also observed in older ewes. FEC data on 670 records of Jamunapari goats descended from 54 bucks and 208 does were used in this study. Analyses were carried out by restricted maximum likelihood estimation, fitting an animal model. Four different animal models ignoring or including maternal genetic or permanent environmental effects were fitted. Different environmental effects, that is, sampling year, month and the sex of the animals, significantly (P<0.01) influenced FECs in the goats. Direct heritability estimates were inflated substantially for this trait when maternal effects were ignored. The direct heritability estimates for the trait ranged from 0.11 to 0.16 depending on the model used. Low estimates of maternal heritability (m(2)=0.06) and the fraction of variance due to maternal permanent environmental effects (c(2)=0.09) for FECs were observed in the present study. The results suggest that direct and permanent environmental maternal effects were important for this trait; however, maternal additive effects had less impact on this trait. These results also indicate that modest rates of genetic progress appear possible for FECs. 相似文献

During October 1998 a study was performed in the Caledon area to determine the presence of anthelmintic resistance in the southern Western Cape, which falls within the winter rainfall region of South Africa. The study took the form of an undifferentiated faecal egg count reduction test (FECRt) survey. The predominant worm genera of the region are Teladorsagia and Trichostrongylus, but Haemonchus causes occasional outbreaks in sheep. No resistance data for any area in the Western Cape Province are available at present. Resistance (< 90% FECR) was recorded on 73% of the farms included in the study, with 46% of these involving resistance to 1 drench, 36% to 2 drenches and 18% to 3 drenches. No moxidectin resistance was detected when it was administered at the therapeutic dosage of 0.2 mg/kg. The results of this study show clearly that resistance of nematodes to other anthelmintics occurs in the Caledon area. 相似文献

The aims of this study were to characterise trichostrongyle egg excretion in dairy goat flocks under various epidemiological conditions, and to assess the relative importance of animals in their first lactation and goats with high levels of milk production on the total egg output of the flock. The repeatability of egg excretion was estimated on 4 different dates in 14 dairy goat farms in France. Egg outputs were positively skewed on most farms suggesting an aggregated distribution of parasites. Within-year repeatability coefficients ranged from 0.29 to 0.82 suggesting that, on most farms, animals with high egg excretion on one occasion are likely to show high rates of excretion on other occasions. Comparisons of egg outputs from the selected subgroups showed that the high producing goats contributed prominently to egg excretion, particularly at times of peak parasitism. Results from goats in their first lactation were more equivocal. These results provide a rationale for anthelmintic strategies in dairy goats based on phenotypic characters. 相似文献

Thirty-eight sheep flocks, predominantly from the south/central Scotland, were examined using a faecal egg count reduction test (FECRT) for the presence of ivermectin (IVM) resistant nematodes. Efficacies of less than 95%, 14-17 days post-treatment, were identified in 6 of 17 naturally grazing flocks where pre-treatment faecal egg counts were in excess of 150 eggs per gram. Efficacies on these IVM resistant farms ranged from 66 to 92%. One other suspected cases of IVM resistance was also identified in returned material. The larvae detected in post-treatment coprocultures from resistant flocks were from the genera Teladorsagia (4 from 6) and Trichostrongylus (2 from 6). 相似文献

This paper reports on the effect of strategic anthelmintic treatments and other determinants on faecal egg counts (FEC) of Trichostrongyles in N'Dama cattle of a west African village. Initially, 527 animals from 13 private N'Dama cattle herds were monitored in a longitudinal study from October 1989 to December 1994. Each herd was stratified by age and animals were sequentially allocated to two groups with similar age distributions. One group received a single anthelmintic treatment of fenbendazole (7.5 mg/kg BW), in October 1989 (n = 250), whereas the other group remained untreated (n = 277) throughout the study. In the next rainy season (June to October), the treated animals were treated twice (in July and September). The same treatment schedule was used in the subsequent rainy seasons until December 1994. Biannual anthelmintic treatments decreased the level of FEC between 31% (late dry season) and 57% (rainy season), when compared to untreated controls. The highest levels of FEC were found during the rainy season from June to October. FEC levels decreased until 4 years of age, after which they remained on a constant low level. The variability of returns to anthelmintic treatments between herds did not seem to be influenced by FEC at the herd level. The financial evaluation of anthelmintic interventions cannot be predicted from FEC and must necessarily rely on the direct monitoring of livestock productivity parameters. 相似文献

A survey of the coccidia in domestic sheep and goats was undertaken to ascertain the type of Eimeria species and the number of different coccidial species in individual faecal samples. Simultaneously the prevalence and the oocyst output was investigated in 2234 sheep and 577 goats during a 12-month period. Eight Eimeria species were encountered in sheep: E. ahsata, E. crandallis, E. faurei, E. intricata, E. ovina, E. ovinoidalis, E. pallida and E. parva.
In goats the following species were found: E. ahsata, E. arloingi, E. christenseni, E. crandallis, E. faurei, E. intricata, E. ninakohlyakimovae and E. parva.
The prevalence in sheep was 94% and in goats 85%, multiple parasitism was the rule. No seasonal fluctuation was observed in the prevalence or oocyst output. The sheep and goats' oocyst output was moderate, the mean for both being in the range of 1000–5000 oocysts/g of faeces. 相似文献

2005, viscera including liver, lungs and GI tracts were collected from 655 sheep and 632 goats slaughtered at 4 abattoirs
located in the towns of Haramaya, Harar, Dire Dawa and Jijiga in eastern Ethiopia. All animals were raised in the farming
areas located within the community boundaries for each town. Collected materials were transported within 24 h to the parasitology
laboratory of Haramaya University for immediate processing. Thirteen species belonging to 9 genera of GI nematodes (Haemonchus contortus, Trichostrongylus axei, T. colubriformis, T. vitrinus, Nematodirus filicollis, N. spathiger, Oesophagostomum
columbianum, O. venulosum, Strongyloides papillosus, Bunostomum trigonocephalum, Trichuris ovis, Cooperia curticei and Chabertia ovina), and 4 species belonging to 3 genera of trematodes (Fasciola hepatica, F. gigantica, Paramphistomum {Calicohoron} microbothrium and Dicrocoelium dendriticum) were recorded in both sheep and goats. All animals in this investigation were infected with multiple species to varying
degrees. The mean burdens of adult nematodes were generally moderate in both sheep and goats and showed patterns of seasonal
abundance that corresponded with the bi-modal annual rainfall pattern, with highest burdens around the middle of the rainy
season. In both sheep and goats there were significant differences in the mean worm burdens and abundance of the different
nematode species between the four geographic locations, with worm burdens in the Haramaya and Harar areas greater than those
observed in the Dire Dawa and Jijiga locations. Similar seasonal variations were also observed in the prevalence of flukes.
But there were no significant differences in the prevalence of each fluke species between the four locations. Overall, the
results showed that Haemonchus, Trichostrongylus, Nematodirus, Oesophagostomum, Fasciola and Paramphistomum species were the most abundant helminth parasites of sheep and goats in eastern Ethiopia. 相似文献

The selection of sheep that are resistant to gastrointestinal parasites and have lower faecal egg counts (FECs) has been the subject of extensive research. This has led to the speculation that the Major Histocompatibility Complex (MHC) genes could be used as markers to reduce FEC. In this study, associations between variation in ovine MHC-DQA2 and various measures of FEC recorded at two times (approximately 4 and 9 months of age) were investigated in a large group of New Zealand lambs (n=4676), derived from 185 different sire-lines, of a variety of breeds and raised on 25 separate farms. Pair-sample t-tests revealed that FEC for Nematodirus spp., Strongyle spp. and total FEC differed significantly between the two assessments. A total of twenty one DQA2 alleles or DQA2-DQA2-like haplotypes were identified, with allele/haplotype presence and frequency varying significantly between farms. For example, allele *0103 was observed on all farms, ranging in frequency from 0.2 to 60.9%, while haplotype *0101-*1601 was only present on one farm, in two lambs. A number of associations between the presence/absence of these alleles and egg counts were observed, but nearly all the allelic/haplotypic associations were age and parasite specific, suggesting that immune response is both age and challenge (parasite species mix) dependent. The exception was allele *1201 which was associated with increased total FECs at both 4 and 9 months of age; with it either being, or tending toward being, significantly associated with both increased Strongyle spp. and Nematodirus spp. counts as well. However, the observed increases in egg counts were small and ranged between 5 and 32 eggs per gram. In conclusion, we believe that the MHC plays an important role in parasite resistance, but that the MHC-nematode interaction is complex and thus the development of a single gene-marker based on the "MHC effect" is unlikely. 相似文献

The effect of dietary protein levels before turnout on the subsequent faecal egg output of gastrointestinal nematodes was examined in two genotypes of grazing sheep, with or without anthelmintic treatment. Lambs were given a low protein (LP) or a high protein (HP) diet for three months (December to March) until grazing started. Half of the animals in each diet group were given anthelmintic treatment (AT) in March and June. The four groups (LP-AT, LP-NT, HP-AT and HP-NT) each consisted of pure-bred Butsiko and cross-bred Butsiko/Karamaniko lambs and grazed separate plots that were initially parasitologically and nutritionally similar. Faecal egg counts were recorded monthly until the experiment ended in July. Mean faecal counts for strongyle-type eggs were higher in the LP-NT group than all the other groups and higher in the LP than the HP groups indicating that faecal egg counts during grazing were influenced by levels of dietary protein before turnout. This effect was intensified in the absence of anthelmintic treatment. No genotype differences were detected. 相似文献
