Summary Inhibin and oxytocin were immunohistochemically demonstrated in all non‐atretic and light‐atretic follicles >2 mm from untreated and pregnant mare's serum gonadotrophin (PMSG)‐treated heifers and cows. Immunostaining for luteinizing hormone (LH) and oestradiol was observed in all non‐atretic follicles >4 mm, but only in follicles from PMSG‐treated cows. Inhibin and oestradiol immunoreactivity was restricted to the granulosa. Oxytocin and LH immunoreactiviity was visualized in both the theca interna and the granulosa. Within the granulosa, LH immunoreactivity was mainly present in cells that were located near the basement membrane. Normal granulosa cells differed from atypical granulosa cells (AGCs) with respect to their ability to bind LH and oestradid It is concluded that immunostaining for α‐inhibin, oxytocin, oestradiol and LH cannot be used as a marker of follicle quality to discriminate between non‐atretic follicles with AGCs and non‐atretic follicles without AGCs in mid‐luteal bovine ovaries. 相似文献

1. Growth rate, laying traits, food intake and food conversion efficiency of laying hens were compared in several experiments on pairs of full or half sibs one of which was a pea‐comb bird ( Pp), the other single‐comb ( pp). 2. There was a slight but significant depressing effect associated with the Pp genotype on 8‐week weight of chicks and body weight of laying hens in some populations. 3. Pea‐comb hens showed a reduction of about 2% in food consumption, independent of the effects on body weight and egg production, and we suggest that with the smaller size of comb and wattles for Pp hens, heat losses and hence energy requirements are less. 4. Appetite seemed to be more depressed at high ambient temperature in birds of the Pp genotype. 相似文献

AbstractAIMS: To assess the occurrence of, and characterise, extended-spectrum β-lactamase (ESBL) and AmpC β-lactamase (AmpC)-producing Enterobacteriaceae isolated by veterinary diagnostic laboratories from infection sites in companion animals in New Zealand.METHODS: Selected Enterobacteriaceae isolates were submitted by seven New Zealand veterinary diagnostic laboratories. They were isolated from infection sites in companion animals between June 2012 and June 2013, and were resistant to amoxicillin-clavulanic acid, fluoroquinolones, or any combination of two or more antimicrobials. Based on disk diffusion test results, the isolates were phenotypically categorised according to production of ESBL and AmpC. Genes for ESBL and AmpC production were amplified by PCR and sequenced. Escherichia coli isolates were also typed by multilocus sequence typing.RESULTS: A total of 115 isolates matching the inclusion criteria were obtained from the participating laboratories, of which 74 (64%) originated from dogs and 29 (25%) from cats. Seven bacterial species were identified, of which E. coli was the most common (87/115, 76%). Of the 115 isolates, 10 (9%) expressed the ESBL phenotype, 43 (37%) the AmpC phenotype, and seven (6%) both ESBL and AmpC phenotypes. Of the 60 ESBL and AmpC-producing isolates, 36 (60%) were E. coli. Amongst these isolates, 27/60 (45%) were classified as multidrug resistant, compared with 15/55 (27%) non-ESBL or AmpC-producing isolates (p<0.01). Ninety five isolates were resistant to amoxicillin-clavulanic acid and 58 (61%) of these were ESBL or AmpC-producing. The predominant ESBL genes were blaCTX-M-14 and blaCTX-M-15, and the dominant plasmid-encoded AmpC gene was blaCMY-2. Thirty-eight E. coli multilocus sequence types (ST) were identified, and the most prevalent were ST12 (12/89, 13%), ST131 (6/89, 7%) and ST648 (6/89, 7%). ESBL and AmpC-producing isolates accounted for 35/1,082 (3.2%) of the Enterobacteriaceae isolated by one laboratory network over the study period.CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE: ESBL and AmpC-producing Enterobacteriaceae were associated with clinical infections in companion animals in New Zealand, and were often multidrug resistant. In this study, these organisms accounted for <5% of all Enterobacteriaceae isolated from infection sites by one laboratory network, but their prevalence among isolates resistant to amoxicillin-clavulanic acid was 61%. Therefore routine secondary testing for ESBL and AmpC production by Enterobacteriaceae that are resistant to amoxicillin-clavulanic acid in primary testing could improve the accuracy of definitive antimicrobial therapy in companion animals in New Zealand. 相似文献

From their abilities to produce tainted eggs when receiving dietary rapeseed meal (RSM) Shaver 585 hens, Ross 1 broiler breeder hens and Shaver 579 hens were identified as tainters or non‐tainters. 2. There was no significant difference in the mean renal clearances of 14C between six tainter and six non‐tainter shaver 585 hens infused with 14C‐trimethylamine (TMA). 3. When increasing concentrations of TMA were infused into five tainter and four non‐tainter broiler breeder hens receiving dietary RSM, at the highest infusion rate tainter hens excreted a larger proportion (95%) of 14C as unchanged TMA than did non‐tainter hens (76%). Eight weeks after removal of RSM from the diet this difference decreased (87 and 76% respectively). 4. Two tainter and five non‐tainter Shaver 579 hens receiving dietary RSM excreted 96 and 70%, respectively, of the infused 14C‐TMA unchanged. 相似文献

1. To examine the effects of beak trimming on behaviour, beak anatomy, weight gain, food intake and feather condition 360 ISA Brown chicks were trimmed by hot cut or cold cut at 1 d or 10 d of age or were sham‐operated controls. The experiment was a 3 × 2 factorial design, with the chicks housed in littered pens in groups of 10 and observed for 6 weeks after trimming. 2. In the first week after trimming, when trimmed birds were compared with untrimmed controls, they were less active (sat and slept more), fed less, preened less and generally engaged in less beak‐related behaviour. 3. These differences waned sharply during week 2 and had disappeared by week 5. There were very few differences between hot‐ and cold‐cut birds. 4. There were also differences in production variables: trimmed birds grew more slowly during the week after trimming, their food intake was depressed for 3 weeks and food conversion efficiency improved for 2 weeks. 5. The only significant effect on feather scores was better plumage condition in the groups trimmed at 1 d and scored at 6 weeks. 6. To examine the anatomical effects 36 ISA Brown chicks trimmed by hot or cold cut at 1 d or 10 d of age were killed at 21 and 42 d after trimming, and their beaks were processed and examined histologically. In all trimmed groups healing was very rapid and no scar tissue was seen but, unlike the controls, the regrown tips contained no afferent nerves or sensory corpuscles. 7. Beak lengths immediately after trimming were 40% to 50% shorter than controls; the anatomical consequences of both methods were identical. 8. Overall, it was judged that the effects on behaviour and beak anatomy were much less severe than previously reported for birds trimmed at older ages. If birds do have to be trimmed then the procedure should be carried out in young birds: from the birds' standpoint 1 d appears to be the most suitable. 相似文献

1. Behavioural development in groups of 8 pullets kept in pens with litter floors, and fed on either mash or pellets, was studied from 0 to 10 weeks in a White Leghorn X broiler (F2) hybrid line (experiment 1) and from 0 to 24 weeks in Hisex, White Leghorn and Brown Leghorn strains (experiment 2). The aim was to identify precursors of feather pecking and cannibalism. 2. Rates of body weight gain were consistently greater with pellets than with mash in both experiments. In experiment 2, the onset of lay was at 17 weeks of age in Hisex, 21 weeks in White Leghorns and 23 weeks in Brown Leghorns. 3. Persistent feather pecking, which was not seen in experiment 1, developed in 2 of 12 groups (one Hisex and one White Leghorn, both fed on pellets) in experiment 2, and was studied in detail at 23 and 24 weeks. The more damaging pecking in the Hisex group was followed by cannibalism in the same group. 4. Based on the (often inconsistent) effects of genetic strain, age and food form on behaviour diat were observed, a working hypothesis was constructed to account for the aetiology of feather pecking and cannibalism in situations where there is floor litter. 5. An age‐related decline in one or more foraging activities may coincide with increases in preening and non‐damaging pecking at other birds. Consumption of litter particles and moulted feathers may be reinforcing. Dustbathing may enhance the stimulus value of litter particles when they are contrasted against background plumage colour. This may direct pecking towards the backs of birds, where feathers as well as litter particles may be removed and eaten. Regular pecking and feather removal may lead eventually, after the onset of lay, to vent pecking and cannibalism. 1. The quantities of water gained and lost, and hence the total water balance, were determined in normal and colostomised White Leghorn laying hens at ambient temperatures of 5, 20 and 35 °G. 2. In both groups the water intake and water loss at all temperatures were well balanced. 3. Water to food ratios and water content of excreta of normal hens increased with increasing temperature. 4. 1. The present study was conducted to determine the possibility of using low‐protein broiler diets supplemented with synthetic amino acids. The effects on performance, carcase composition and nitrogen retention were evaluated.) 2. A starter diet was given, ad libitum, from 7 to 21 and a finisher diet from 21 to 42 d of age. Body weight, weight gain, food intake and food conversion (FC) were determined at 3 and 6 weeks of age. Abdominal fat deposition (AFD), carcase yield, carcase fat and protein and nitrogen retention were determined at 6 weeks of age. During the starter period chicks were given a 231 g/kg crude protein (CP) diet and a low protein diet supplemented with synthetic amino acid, a: to National Research Council recommendations, b: to the concentration of the control diet, and c: in agreement with the pattern of body composition. Glutamic acid and glycine were added to some diets as sources of non‐essential amino acids (NEAA). All diets contained 12.62 MJ metabolisable energy (AMEn)/kg. The diets administered between 3 and 6 weeks were comparable to the starter diets, except that they contained more AMEn (12.85 MJ/kg) and less protein. 3. Performance equal to that of high protein controls was obtained with birds fed a low protein diet supplemented with synthetic essential and NEAA to the amounts in the control diet or based on the amino acid profile of body protein. This was not achieved with low protein diets supplemented with synthetic amino acids to the amounts recommended by NRC. 4. Without altering performances, the efficiency of protein utilisation of birds fed on low protein diets was superior to that of birds fed on the commercial control diet and their nitrogen excretion was reduced by 26%. The percentage carcase yield and protein was unaffected by the dietary regimen but carcase fat content and AFD increased as the protein content of the diet decreased. 5. These results show that it is possible to obtain the same performances with low protein diets supplemented with synthetic amino acids, using an ideal amino acid balance. Summary The comparative study reported in the present paper was undertaken to collect data on the collagen content and collagen quality of tendons showing high (low) tensile strength levels and a compact (loose) histological structure. It was shown that tendon tissues of these two groups do not differ in this regard. The effect of administering a number of nutrients (known to be essential in collagenesis) was tested during this study. Summary A comparative study was undertaken regarding the extractability of glucosaminoglycans and mucoproteins in the tendon tissue of birds highly susceptible to synovitis, viz. broiler breed cocks (BB cocks), and of birds highly resistant to synovitis, viz. White Leghorn hens (WL hens). It .was shown that in the case of WL hens this extractability decreased in accordance with ageing. In the case of BB cocks such a decrease was not observed. This observation is in support of a working hypothesis which supposes a relatively high degree of interaction between the several components of tendon tissue (e.g. collagen and glucosaminoglycans/mucoproteins) in the case of WL hens, and a relatively low degree of this interaction in the case of BB cocks. Moreover the results of this study account for the observation that the tendon tissue of WL hens is more resistant to tensile stress than that of BB cocks, and they indicate that the above interaction is a determinant in the aetiology of synovitis. 相似文献

Killing of animals is an important task to be performed by veterinarians. Killing decisions and their implementation often raise ethical questions. As a result of an interdisciplinary workshop targeting the subject "killing of animals" with veterinarians and ethicists, a three-dimensional dimension scheme was developed. Whereas the first two dimensions are focused on the animal's past and future life and are discussed with regard to life quality and life accomplishment (the "telos"), the third dimension incorporates the reason to kill and may integrate the concept of dignity. This form of dignity and the weighing of interests are applied to example scenarios and the resulting responsibilities of veterinarians and society are discussed. 相似文献

Summary A porcine respiratory, non‐enteric virus which is related to the coronavirus transmissible gastroenteritus virus (TGEV) has been isolated in pigs and in cell culture. The isolate was designated TLM 83. It has become very widespread and enzootic among the swine population in Belgium and in other swine raising countries. It causes an infection of the lungs and appears to spread by aerogenic route. It does not replicate in the enteric tract. The experimental infection in conventional and gnotobiotic pigs in isolation remains subclinical. The infection, either experimental or in the field, results in the formation of antibodies which neutralise the classical enteric TGEV. Based on this relationship, this virus is assumed to be a new TGEV‐related porcine respiratory coronavirus or TGEV itself which has totally lost its tropism for the enteric tract. 相似文献

Withdrawal of cholecalciferol (D 3) supplement from a layers diet drastically reduced blood 25‐hydroxycholecalciferol (25‐OH‐D 3), 1α ,25‐dihydroxycholecalciferol (calcitriol) and egg specific gravity (SG) within two weeks, followed by a decrease in blood total calcium (Ca). 2. Doubling the D3 supplement in the control diet (27.5 μg or 1100 IU/kg) almost linearly increased the circulating concentration of 25‐OH‐D3 without raising the concentration of calcitriol, Ca, or egg SG. 3. Replacing D3 by the optimal concentration of calcitriol (5 μg/kg diet) improved egg SG after 21 weeks of treatment without increasing blood calcitriol or total Ca. 4. By itself, 24,25‐dihydroxycholecalciferol [24,25‐(OH)2D3] was unable to maintain normal blood levels of calcitriol, Ca or egg SG and, when added together with calcitriol in the diet, tended to elevate blood Ca but suppress the beneficial effect of calcitriol on shell quality, with little or no effect on blood calcitriol. 相似文献

1. In a series of five trials, conducted with broiler chicks during the starting period, two types of dietary single‐cell protein were tested: Pruteen (PR), a protein concentrate produced from methanol‐utilising bacteria, and a Lavera‐type yeast (LA) utilising the normal paraffins of heavy gas oil. 2. The inclusion of 90 to 150 g PR or LA/kg diet depressed growth rate by 14 to 16% and 9 to 10%, respectively. This effect was slightly counteracted (about 6 percentage units) by the addition of L‐arginine. 3. The growth depression can be explained completely in the case of PR or almost completely in that of LA on the basis of reduced food intake, without a decided effect on food utilisation. 4. The reduced consumption of PR‐containing diets is not due to a petroleum‐ether‐soluble factor, nor to the high and low concentrations of sodium and potassium, respectively, in PR. 相似文献
