1. Plasma concentrations of prolactin, measured using homologous chicken or turkey prolactin radioimmunoassays, increased 2‐ and 9‐fold, respectively in somatically mature turkey hens transferred from short (6 h light (L) :18 h dark (D)) to long (14 L:10 D) photoperiods.

2. A further increase in plasma prolactin was observed in laying hens 2 to 3 weeks before the onset of incubation. This increase was detected using the turkey prolactin assay but not the chicken prolactin assay.

3. The onset of incubation was not always associated with the cessation of egg production. Egg laying stopped in incubating hens only after plasma concentrations of prolactin were approaching their maximal values. These were 10‐fold higher than the prolactin concentrations at the onset of lay.

4. The removal of clutches of eggs from incubating hens resulted in a decrease in plasma concentrations of prolactin, which was associated with the cessation of incubation in two hens which had been incubating for 52 and 47 d. The decrease was only temporary in two hens which had been incubating for 8 and 32 d. The latter two hens continued to show incubation behaviour although they were not sitting on eggs.

5. In four turkey hens which did not become broody, egg production ceased after 12 weeks exposure to 14 L: 10 D. The concentration of plasma prolactin, as measured using the turkey prolactin assay, increased 2‐fold during the 2 weeks before these hens stopped laying.  相似文献

Plasma concentrations of prolactin and corticosterone were determined in hourly samples collected over a 25-hr period from unrestrained turkey hens exhibiting incubation (broody) behavior. Hens were maintained in cages on a 14 hr light: 10 hr dark photoperiod. Mean plasma prolactin concentration increased significantly late in the dark period to reach maximum daily levels of 496 ng/ml at the start of the photophase. However, a well-defined daily rhythm in prolactin secretion was not evident. Plasma corticosterone concentration showed a significant daily rhythm characterized by a major secretory peak (7.14 ng/ml) in the middle of the light period and a smaller, less well-defined peak (4.11 ng/ml) during the dark period. Both prolactin and corticosterone secretion ranged widely throughout the day in individual hens in a manner suggestive of pulsatile hormone secretion. This study demonstrates that the extremely high prolactin concentrations characteristic of the incubating turkey hen reflect large, dynamic changes in plasma prolactin concentrations occurring throughout the photoperiod, rather than a constantly high level of prolactin secretion.  相似文献

Incubation behavior in the turkey hen is associated with a large increase in prolactin secretion. Previous research using hourly sampling of incubating hens has shown that prolactin levels fluctuate widely throughout a 24-hr period, suggestive of pulsatile secretion. This study compared the prolactin secretory patterns of laying and incubating turkeys to determine if prolactin is secreted episodically and if the high prolactin levels characteristic of the incubating hen may result, at least in part, from a change in the amplitude or frequency of secretory pulses. Blood samples were collected from cannulated, unrestrained laying and incubating hens at 10-min intervals for up to 24 hr. Data were analyzed with the PULSAR program to determine baseline prolactin levels and to establish the magnitude, frequency, and duration of episodic secretory peaks. The results revealed that prolactin is secreted in a pulsatile pattern in both laying and incubating turkey hens. Incubating hens had ninefold higher mean and baseline plasma prolactin levels than laying hens. The prolactin pulses were of approximately 12-fold greater amplitude in incubating hens than in laying hens, but the duration and frequency of pulses were the same in both groups. Therefore, the high prolactin levels required for incubation do not appear to result from an increase in the frequency of lactotroph stimulation, but rather from an increase in the prolactin secretion rate.  相似文献

This experiment was conducted to evaluate the effects of chromium (chromium picolinate) on performance and plasma concentrations of insulin and corticosterone of laying hens (Ross Brown) under a low ambient temperature (6.9 °C). One hundred and twenty laying hens (46 weeks old) were divided into four groups, 30 hens per group. The laying hens were fed either a control diet containing 710.3 p.p.b. chromium or the control diet supplemented with 100, 200 or 400 μg chromium/kg diet. Increasing supplemental chromium increased live weight change (p ≤ 0.001, linear) and egg production (p ≤ 0.001, linear) and also improved feed efficiency linearly (p ≤ 0.001). Live weight change and egg production also had quadratic responses (p ≤ 0.001) to increasing chromium supplementation. Plasma insulin concentration increased linearly (p ≤ 0.001), whereas corticosterone concentration decreased linearly (p ≤ 0.001) as dietary chromium supplementation increased. The results of this study indicate that supplemental dietary chromium, 200 p.p.b. in particular, had a positive effect on performance and increased the plasma insulin concentration of laying hens under cold stress.  相似文献

An experiment was conducted to assess the relative in vivo and in vitro activities of chicken LH-RH-I and -II in laying, incubating and out-of-lay turkey hens. The highest plasma concentrations of LH were measured in laying turkey hens, whereas hypophyseal concentrations were highest in incubating hens (I) and lowest in the laying hens at the end of the laying period (EL). Hypophyseal and plasma concentrations of LH decreased with aging in laying hens (L) and the greater decrease occurred in the hypophyses. An in vitro hypophyseal acute challenge with 2-min pulses of cLHRH I or II (10−7 M) using a perifusion technique resulted in an increase in the release of LH in out-of-lay (OL) and incubating (I) hens, but not in laying (L) hens. Although both peptides elicited comparable responses in I hens, cLHRH II was more effective in OL hens. This difference was attributable to a greater amplitude of the response, whose duration was unchanged. Hypophyseal desensitization to a subsequent stimulation was observed in OL hens when the interval between stimulations was 30 min, but this did not occur at 60- or 120-min intervals. In vivo, the injection of cLHRH I or II, at doses of 10−8 and 10−10M/kg B.W. stimulated increases in the plasma concentrations of LH, which were initiated within 1 min of injection in OL and I hens but from 5 to 20 min postinjection in L hens. The responses were dose-related and greater immediate responses were measured with cLHRH I than with cLHRH II. Also, after the injection of cLHRH II at the 10−8 M/kg B.W. dose, the shape of the LH response consisted of an initial increase, followed by a more sustained phase during which LH concentrations were either stable (I hens) or continued to increase (L and OL hens) from 20 to 60 min after injection. In contrast, the injection of cLHRH I at doses of 10−8 or 10−10 M/kg or cLHRH II at a dose of 10−10 M/kg in I and OL hens, produced a peak of LH concentrations in plasma within 5 min and thereafter declined gradually. The difference in the in vivo responses to LHRH I and II could not be attributed to a greater potency of cLHRH II, but to a more prolonged action. In summary, the responses to both forms of chicken LH-RH varies markedly with the stage of the reproductive cycle (L, I, and OL) and differs between the in vivo and in vitro situations. Although cLHRH II may be more active than cLHRH I, controversy still surrounds its precise physiological role.  相似文献

The aim of the experiment was to investigate the effects of cage floor and cage density on stress parameters of laying hens. A total of 162 brown laying hens (Hyline Brown), aged 34 weeks, were used in the experiment. Compact-type battery cages, with three floors, were used. Hens were allocated as one, three or five hens in each of 18 cages to obtain three different cage density groups of 1968, 656 and 393.8 cm2 floor area per hen, respectively. The same number of cages with different cage density were allocated to three different battery floors (first floor=top, second=middle, third=bottom) systematically. Values for body weight, mortality rate, egg weight, egg production, egg quality characteristics, egg yolk cholesterol content, the levels of blood plasma corticosterone, serum glucose, total cholesterol and triglycerides, the ratio of heterophils to lymphocytes (H-L ratio), antibody titers, claw length score, foot health score, plumage score and throat skin injuries were taken as indicators of stress. The values for egg weight (P<0.01) at the first floor were greater than the other floor levels. The group with five hens per cage had significantly lower mean estimates (P<0.01) than other groups with respects to body weight (P<0.001), egg production (P<0.001), egg weight (P<0.001) and plumage score (P<0.01), while significantly higher mean estimates for egg albumen index (P<0.01), Haugh unit (P<0.01), serum glucose (P<0.001), and H-L ratio (P<0.001). Serum cholesterol was higher in cages with one hen than that with five hens, whereas plasma corticosterone was lower. Antibody titers in cages with one hen was similar to that with three or five hens; however, those with three hens had higher titers than those with five hens. Values for egg breaking strength, yolk index, egg cholesterol content, and foot health score were not affected by cage density or floor. The results suggest that the allocation of three hens per cage had no measurable effect on health and welfare.  相似文献

1. The effects of tomato powder supplementation on performance, egg quality, serum and egg yolk carotenoids, vitamins and malondialdehyde (MDA) concentrations in were investigated in laying hens in mid-lay.

2. A total of 90 laying hens, 49 weeks old, were divided into 3 groups consisting of 6 replicate cages, 5 birds per cage. Birds were randomly fed on one of three diets: basal diet and basal diet added with 5 or 10?g tomato powder per kg diet.

3. As tomato powder concentration increased, there were linear increases in feed intake, egg production, egg weight and yolk colour and a linear decrease in feed conversion. Shell weight, shell thickness and Haugh unit remained unchanged in response to dietary treatments.

4. Concentrations of serum and egg yolk lycopene, β-carotene, lutein and vitamin A increased for both diets including tomato powder, whereas MDA decreased linearly with increasing supplemental tomato powder concentration.

5. Tomato powder supplementation increased egg production persistency and increased carotenoids and vitamin A contents in egg yolk, accompanied by reduced yolk lipid peroxidation.  相似文献

1. An experiment was done under commercial conditions to investigate the physiological effects of isolating broody turkey hens, for 72 h, in sand and wire floored pens on the third, 10th and 16th weeks of production.

2. Hens identified as broody and removed from the flock had higher plasma prolactin concentrations than the laying hens at each of the three experimental stages.

3. Confinement in sand and wire floored pens, induced a decline in plasma prolactin concentrations. This decline probably impeded immediate development of broody behaviour. Alternately, levels of prolactin higher than those of laying hens were again measured 7 and 14 days after treatment during third week but not after the 10 th and 16th week of production.

4. Confinement did not induce consistent changes in luteinising hormone (LH) and progesterone concentrations from one period to an other.

5. An increase in the plasma concentration of D‐(/?)‐hydroxybutyrate was observed in the hens which had an egg present in the oviduct on day 2, 3 and/or 4 of the treatment. Subsequently, a decrease in ovulation rate was observed in the hens with higher concentrations of D‐(β)‐hydroxybutyrate while under treatment, during the 10th week of production.

6. These data confirm that the effectiveness of the traditional methods for broodiness prevention under commercial conditions is related to the induction of a decrease of prolactin.  相似文献

1. The concentrations of plasma luteinising hormone (LH), thyroxine and prolactin were measured in about 200 birds from each of two homogenous strains of White Leghorn hens at 9 weeks of age and related to subsequent egg production.

2. Within each strain, no relationships were found in individual birds between the concentrations of the plasma hormones and subsequent egg production after 90, 180 and 270 d of laying.

3. Single measurements of plasma LH, thyroxine or prolactin before the onset of lay do not appear to be useful criteria for the selection of egg‐laying strains.  相似文献

The objectives of this study were to investigate the effects of flaxseeds and/or fenugreek seeds as a source of phytoestrogens in laying feed on productive performance, egg quality, yolk fatty acids, plasma profile and antioxidative status in aged laying hens. A total of 120 Bovans Brown hens at 65 weeks of age were housed individually in laying cages in an open‐sided building under a 16‐hr light: 8‐hr dark lighting schedule. Hens were randomly divided into four experimental treatments (n = 30 each): (a) control (basal diet without any supplementation); (b) 1 g/kg of flaxseeds; (c) 1 g/kg of fenugreek seeds; and (d) combination of 1 g/kg flaxseeds and 1 g/kg fenugreek seeds from 65 to 71 weeks of age. Hen‐day egg production and egg mass were significantly increased by dietary supplementation of flaxseeds and/or fenugreek seeds, while feed intake was not affected; thus, feed conversion ratio was improved (p < 0.05). Weights of egg, albumen, yolk and shell were increased by the dietary treatments. Shell thickness and yolk colour were improved by supplementation of flaxseeds and/or fenugreek seeds. Yolk crude protein was not significantly affected by treatments; however, crude fat and calcium contents in yolk were increased and egg yolk cholesterol content was decreased. Interestingly, dietary supplementation of flaxseeds, fenugreek seeds and their combination had a significant positive effect on plasma luteinizing hormone, follicle‐stimulating hormone, oestradiol‐17β and triglycerides. Inclusion of flaxseeds and/or fenugreek seeds in the diets enhanced the serum glutathione peroxidase and superoxide dismutase activities and reduced the malondialdehyde and total cholesterol concentrations in plasma. Dietary supplementation of flaxseeds and/or fenugreek seeds increased α‐linolenic and linoleic acids in egg yolk. It could be concluded that inclusion of mixed sources of phytoestrogens in diets improved laying performance, egg quality, the antioxidative status, hormonal profile and steroidogenesis in aged laying hens.  相似文献

In conventional cages laying hens are subjected to restricted movement and a lack of ability to fulfil most of their natural behaviours. Thus, welfare and health of laying hens can be highly limited in conventional cages. Due to the rising criticism of conventional cages the EU passed a directive in 1999 (CEC, 1999) in order to ban conventional cages by the beginning of 2012. Because of this decision alternative housing systems like floor pens, aviaries or free range systems will gain importance in the future. In these housing systems laying hens have the opportunity to live out their natural behaviours to a higher extent. But also alternative housing systems have some disadvantages. Frequent infections leading to higher mortalities can be detected. Besides that egg production in alternative systems is often not so high and stable like in cages. Furnished cages and small-group-systems represent the attempt to retain the high economic and hygiene standards of conventional cages, while offering the hens the possibility to exercise and fulfil some of their natural behaviours. With regard to productivity, egg quality and bone strength this attempt seems to function, whereas keel bone deformities and the lack of ability to live out natural behaviours are still problems in furnished cages.  相似文献

1. A new homologous radioimmunoassay has been developed for the measurement of turkey prolactin.

2. A 25000 kDa purified recombinant derived turkey prolactin (rtPRL), the biological activity of which was tested using a crop sac assay, was used as immunogen for the production of rabbit antiserum. In this biological test, the rtPRL was as active as the ovinePRL.

3. The radioligand (rtPRL) was labelled with 125I and the assay allowed the detection of standard doses of rtPRL ranging from 400 pg/tube to 50 ng/tube.

4. No cross reaction with chicken luteinising hormone and recombinant chicken growth hormone was detected.

5. The within and between assay coefficients of variability were 5.0 ± 2.7% and 16.3%, respectively. The overall mean recovery ratio was 1.01.

6. The dose‐response curves obtained with serial dilution of plasma and pituitary from turkey hens at different physiological stages and from male turkeys were parallel to those obtained with standard rtPRL.

7. The measured concentration of prolactin was 5 times higher in plasma from incubating than laying turkey hens, and the pituitaries from incubating hens contained 2 and 4 times more prolactin than those of laying and out of lay hens or males, respectively.

8. To further assess the validity of the assay, we measured changes in plasma concentration of prolactin in turkeys following stimulation with chicken vasointestinal peptide (cVIP). A single injection of 1 or 10 μg/kg body weight of cVIP to laying hens produced a large and rapid increase in plasma prolactin.

9. This new radioimmunoassay appears to be highly specific and sensitive for the measurement of turkey prolactin.  相似文献

1. Plasma prolactin (PRL) concentrations, total daylight sitting time and extent of brood patch development were compared in singly caged hens incubating without a nest or eggs and in penned hens incubating eggs in nest boxes. No significant differences were found in any of the three measures of incubation intensity. 2. When 10 newly-hatched poults were placed in the cages of incubating hens their plasma PRL concentrations fell rapidly. No fall in plasma PRL was observed in hens that could see and hear, but not touch the poults. 3. When physical contact between hens and poults was maintained, visual isolation of hens from poults, surgical devocalisation of poults, or the combination of visual isolation and devocalisation of poults had no effect on the poult-stimulated decline in plasma PRL concentrations. 4. Sensory cues from poults that evoke the PRL response in incubating hens are primarily tactile.  相似文献

The purpose of this study was to evaluate feeding 2 levels of spray-dried bovine plasma protein (SDP) on production performance of laying hens subjected to high ambient temperatures. Two groups of 96 Hy-Line W-98 hens (38 wk of age) were housed in each of 2 environmentally controlled chambers. At 40 wk of age, all hens were fed 3 diet treatments consisting of (1) a control diet (0% SDP); (2) the control diet supplemented with 0.75% SDP; and (3) the control diet supplemented with 1.50% SDP. Hens in each chamber (8 cages of 4 hens per cage) were ad libitum fed 1 of each diet for 5 wk. The heat stress (HS) chamber was maintained at 21°C (wk 1), 29°C (wk 2), and 35°C (wk 3 to 5). The thermoneutral chamber was maintained at 21°C during wk 1 to 5. A significant main effect of week was observed for hens maintained in the HS chamber for egg production, egg weight, egg mass, and feed consumption, which resulted in acute heat stress causing a reduction in these parameters. Hens fed the 1.50% SDP diet in the HS chamber produced greater (P < 0.05) egg mass on average than hens fed the control or 0.75% SDP diet (wk 1 to 5). During the second week of acute HS (wk 4), hens fed the control and 1.50% SDP diets had greater (P < 0.05) egg production than those fed the 0.75% SDP diet. During wk 5, hens in the HS chamber that were fed the 1.50% SDP diet produced more (P < 0.05) eggs than those fed the control diet. Therefore, based on the results of this study, acute HS negatively affected short-term production performance. In addition, feeding hens an SDP-supplemented diet may have a slight positive effect on production performance when maintained in acute HS conditions.  相似文献

The influence of dietary palm olein, in comparison to fish oil and lard, on lipid levels in egg yolk and blood plasma, the fatty acid composition of egg yolk, and various production parameters were studied. Brown Lohman laying hens (n=45) were randomly assigned into three groups of 15 birds, and treated with experimental diets with either 3% palm olein (PO), fish oil (FO) or lard (L) for 6 weeks. At the end of the experiment, feed consumption was significantly lower for hens fed the PO diet, except week 6 of the experiment. The concentration of plasma triglycerides was increased by all experimental diets, whereas there were no significant increases of plasma total lipid and total cholesterol concentrations only in the PO group. For yolk lipids a decrease in triglycerides in the FO and L groups was observed, while total cholesterol and total lipid were significantly decreased in the PO group. Feeding with the PO diet resulted in the lowest concentrations of palmitic, stearic and linoleic acid, as well as in the highest concentration of monounsaturated oleic acid in the yolk total lipid. It was concluded that the composition of yolk lipids did not closely match the concentrations of lipids observed in experimental diets or plasma. Based on the current work it seems that the PO diet modulates egg yolk lipid content best.  相似文献

This experiment was conducted to determine the effects of cage location and tier level with respect to light intensity on egg production and egg quality of hens housed in a semiconfined facility. Hens (ISA Brown, n = 225) at 75 wk of age were placed into 3-tier cages as top (T), middle (M), and bottom (B) tiers located in cages illuminated artificially (EI), by window (FW), or between corridors (C) for 2 mo. Light intensity was measured monthly for each cage at 5 cm from feeders every 6 h. Egg production was recorded daily and egg quality was assessed biweekly. Light intensity was the greatest for cages in the FW group (151.9, 119.8, and 89.8 lx for tiers T, M, and B, respectively), followed by EI (52.6, 54.5, and 51.0 lx for tiers T, M, and B, respectively), and C (44.5, 23.4, and 4.7 lx for tiers T, M, and B, respectively). Hens at location EI had greater egg production than hens at FW and C. Egg production for hens at tier T was also greater than for hens at tiers M and B. Egg production for hens at EI and C decreased quadratically, whereas that for hens at FW decreased linearly from tiers T to B. Cage location, but not tier level, affected egg weight. Hens at EI and FW produced heavier eggs than hens at C. Shape index, yolk color, and yolk index were independent of cage location and tier level. Hens at EI and FW produced eggs with thinner and weaker shells than hens at C. Moreover, eggshell strength increased linearly from tier T to B. Both albumen index and Haugh unit were the greatest for hens at FW, followed by EI and C. Their responses to cage location varied with tier levels. In conclusion, variation in light intensity in multitier cage systems in semiconfined laying hen houses may be a contributing factor for depressed laying performance and egg quality.  相似文献

Vision-restricting "polypeepers" have been reported to result in higher egg production with improved food utilisation in hens. In the present experiments behavioural explanations of these effects were sought. For detailed observations 128 White Leghorn X Black Australorp hens were used and for pecking damage comparisons a further 192 hens. Half were fitted with polypeepers. Birds were studied in individual cages, three-bird cages or deep litter pens by direct observation and cine-camera. Adjustment problems in feeding, stereotypic head shaking and protracted displacement neck preening occurred initially after fitting of polypeepers. Disappearance of these phenomena after about one month, however, indicated adaptation. The initial reduction of egg production associated with polypeepers, observed by others, coincided with the period of adaptation. Polypeepers resulted in less activity; birds in multiple cages and litter pens resting more, while in single cages body movement was reduced. Polypeepers caused faster eating and less wastage of both pellets and mash. In general, agonistic acts were greatly reduced in multiple cages, resulting in reduced feeding competition. Polypeepers reduced significantly the incidence of feather pecking, resulting in considerably less feather loss after three months, and more so after 14 months in lay. Over the study as a whole the reductions in activity, food spillage, agonistic behaviour and feather damage probably contribute to the lower food consumption and improved laying efficiency previously reported.  相似文献

1. The presence of histamine in egg yolk, its losses during storage, incubation and heating, and its relationship to cage density stress and the egg production status of hens are described. 2. A significant (P less than 0.05) reduction in the histamine concentration of egg yolk was noted after incubating or heating egg yolks or on storage eggs. 3. Histamine concentration was greater in the yolks of high egg producing hens. 4. The concentrations of histamine in egg yolks did not change significantly (P less than 0.05) on keeping the hens individually in a cage, pairing them in the same size cage or after separating them again to individual cages.  相似文献

The aim of the present study was to compare the welfare level and performance of laying hens between conventional and small furnished cages. At the age of 54 weeks, 120 White Leghorn layers were divided into four groups: four (C4) or six hens/cage in conventional cages and four or six (F6) hens/cage in furnished cages. Their behavior, number of steps taken, performance and physical condition were measured. Sham dust‐bathing was greater in conventional cages than in furnished cages (P = 0.05) and dust‐bathing, litter scratching and litter pecking were also observed in furnished cages. Other comfort behavior, moving and number of steps taken were more frequent in the four‐hen cages than in the six‐hen cages (P < 0.01, P < 0.001, P < 0.001, respectively). Though egg production and egg mass in C4 and F6 were lower than in the other groups, no significant differences were found in the other production measurements. Bodyweight gain was larger in the four‐hen cages than the six‐hen cages (P < 0.01). In conclusion, behavior was not restricted in the furnished cages, but activity and bodyweight gain were affected by group size (density) rather than cage design. Hereafter, the studies on suitable density in each cage design, using young layers, are required.  相似文献
