Cardiac arrest during anaesthesia in two horses   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Unexpected cardiac arrest occurred in two horses during routine surgical anaesthesia. Both were successfully resuscitated. The aetiology of these occurrences and their possible relationship to second degree heart block is discussed.  相似文献

Many factors have been identified as risk factors for colic in horses in several epidemiological studies. The aim of our paper was to review the results of 12 epidemiological studies, in order to assess the impact of each risk factor for colic. According to the literature, the factors that increase the risk of colic are feeding practices (type and quality of food, type and changes of feeding), the intrinsic factors of horses (sex, age and breed), management (type and changes of housing and activity), medical history (a previous colic, administration of a medical treatment) and parasite control (the presence of worms and type of deworming program). Several individual factors were incriminated as risk factors by all the studies. Nevertheless, the different studies did not always agree on the role of other risk factors. The conclusions were tightly related to several criteria in the selection of the study population, like the type of the epidemiological study, the number and the origin of horses included and the location of the study.  相似文献

Colic in horses very often induces changes in the coagulation system causing the development of disseminated intravascular clotting. It is promoted by blood concentration and an increase in exposition of coagulation activators with a simultaneous decrease in coagulation inhibitors activity, mainly antithrombin III. Progressing blood platelets aggregation supports production of microthromboses and plugging capillary vessels. The progression of this processes causes complications in basic disease and becomes the reason for therapeutic failure. Determination of coagulation system indexes such as the number of platelets, prothrombin time, activated partial thromboplastin time, thrombin time, concentration of fibrinogen and fibrinogen degradation products, and D-dimmer and antithrombin III contents enables diagnosis and facilitates appropriate therapy of colic in horses.  相似文献

Salmonella shed by horses with colic   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Salmonella was isolated from 13 of 100 colicky horses admitted to a referral hospital. Seven horses were shedding the microorganism at or soon after hospital admission. A unique serotype was introduced into the hospital by a horse not shedding Salmonella at admission. It was concluded that 8 horses were infected before admission. Whether the remaining 5 horses were infected before or after admission could not be determined. Salmonella senftenberg was the most commonly isolated serotype from colicky horses and from horses with salmonellosis that were not colicky on hospital admission during the survey period. This organism was rarely isolated at the hospital before initiation of this survey.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To determine whether specific feeding practices were associated with development of colic in horses. DESIGN: Prospective matched case-control study. ANIMALS: 364 horses examined by veterinarians in private practice in Texas because of colic (cases; n = 182) or any other reason (controls; 182). PROCEDURE: Participating veterinarians were sent forms at the beginning of the study to collect information on signalment, feeding management practices, farm management practices, and preventive medical treatments. Case and control horses were compared by use of conditional logistic regression to identify factors associated with colic. RESULTS: Risk factors for colic were a recent change in batch of hay, decreased exposure to pasture, a recent change in type of grain or concentrate fed, feeding > 2.7 kg (6 lb) of oats/d, feeding hay from round bales, and Thoroughbred breed. Recent anthelmintic administration decreased the risk of colic. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Results suggest that certain changes in diet (eg, change in batch of hay, change in type of grain or concentrate, feeding hay from round bales) and management (eg, decreased availability of pasture) increase the risk of colic in horses.  相似文献

Five horses were anaesthetised twice with thiopentone sodium, guaifenesin and halothane. The second anaesthesia was 16 days after the first and two days following oral administration of trichlorfon. Heart rate, carotid arterial, pulmonary arterial and right atrial pressures, cardiac output and blood temperature were measured every 15 minutes for 120 minutes. Heart rate, carotid arterial pressure and cardiac output were similar on both occasions. Pulmonary arterial and right atrial pressures were highest during anaesthesia after treatment with trichlorfon when compared with values obtained before treatment. Pulmonary vascular resistance was significantly decreased at four measurement times during anaesthesia after treatment with trichlorfon. All cardiovascular measurements were within ranges accepted as normal for halothane anaesthesia in horses. In a second experiment, four ponies were anaesthetised with xylazine and ketamine on two occasions one week apart. Two ponies received trichlorfon two days before the second anaesthesia. Heart rate, arterial pressure and respiratory rate recorded during anaesthesia were not different in ponies after organophosphate treatment. The time to standing after the second anaesthesia was significantly increased in all ponies.  相似文献

The clinical, radiographic and post-mortem findings in 6 horses with cryptococcal pneumonia and one horse with an abdominal cryptococcal granuloma are described. In pulmonary cryptococcosis, the lesions were either diffuse and multiple, with bilateral lung involvement, or localised mainly to the dorsocaudal region of one lung. The cases of diffuse multiple cryptococcosis were thought to be associated with haematogenous spread of the fungus after gastrointestinal infection and dissemination from regional lymph nodes. The localised form of the disease was thought to have been associated with inhalation of cryptococci. In all cases of pulmonary cryptococcosis, encapsulated yeast-like organisms were demonstrated in Wright's-stained sediment of tracheal washes. In the horse with the abdominal granuloma, cryptococci were present in a fine needle aspirate sample. Isolates of Cryptococcus neoformans var gattii were recovered from 2 of the 5 horses in which cultures were attempted. In addition to a history of previous illness that may have predisposed to infection, most horses in this report had been in areas in which Eucalyptus camaldulensis, or the closely related E rudis, were growing. In humans, an epidemiological relationship between E camaldulensis and infection with C neoformans var gattii has been suggested. Cases of equine cryptococcosis carry a poor prognosis and treatment was not attempted in any of these cases.  相似文献

A retrospective study was performed of horses that developed colic during endurance racing, and subsequently required surgery. Fifteen horses met the inclusion criteria, of which 13 (87%) had small intestinal volvulus. Nine of the 15 horses (60%) had a small intestinal resection and anastomosis performed. Post operative ileus, particularly in those horses that had a resection performed, was a common complication. Eleven of the 15 (73%) survived, and 4 (27%) have since raced.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To assess the changes in colloid osmotic pressure (COP) in horses undergoing surgery for colic. STUDY DESIGN: Prospective clinical evaluation. ANIMALS: Twenty-nine adult horses presented for emergency laparotomy. METHODS: Horses were premedicated with intravenous (IV) xylazine and anesthesia was induced with ketamine, diazepam and guaifenesin and was maintained with isoflurane as required. Lactated Ringer's solution (LRS) was given to all horses during anesthesia. Blood was collected in heparin before, and every 30 minutes during, anesthesia to measure COP, total protein concentration (TP), osmolality, packed cell volume, electrolytes, glucose and lactate. In addition, COP was estimated using different formulas previously described for horses. RESULTS: Before anesthesia, COP and TP were 18.7 +/- 2.2 mmHg (2.49 +/- 0.29 kPa) and 6.3 +/- 0.7 g dL(-1), respectively. The horses received a mean +/- SD of 19.5 +/- 3.9 mL kg(-1) hour(-1) (range 15-25 mL kg(-1)hour(-1)) of LRS during anesthesia. The COP and TP decreased linearly (R(2) = 0.99, p < 0.01) during anesthesia and reached the lowest point at the end of anesthesia with a COP of 11.6 +/- 1.6 mmHg (1.55 +/- 0.21 kPa) and TP of 4.4 +/- 0.4 g dL(-1). The Pearson correlation coefficient for COP versus TP was r(2) = 0.78. Calculation of COP from TP concentrations showed that two formulas could predict COP to within 1 mmHg (0.13 kPa) (Thomas & Brown 1992; Boscan et al. 2007). CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Colloid osmotic pressure, like TP, decreased greatly over the course of crystalloid fluid infusion during anesthesia for laparotomy in horses with colic. This change may predispose the animal to tissue edema with subsequent morbidity.  相似文献

Histologic findings in the gastrointestinal tract of horses with colic   总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3
Thirty horses were admitted to the University of Georgia Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital with colic severe enough to warrant surgery and/or euthanasia. Gastrointestinal tracts of these 30 horses were histologically examined for morphologic changes. The horses were grouped according to cause of the colic (ie, simple obstruction, strangulation obstruction, thromboemboli, and inflammation). Lesions were graded as to severity, and grade scores were correlated with survival or nonsurvival. Mucosal changes developed distal and proximal to the primary lesion site and, although there were some differences between groups, changes characteristic of ischemia were common to all groups. The predictability of lesion grades of 2 or higher for nonsurvivability (90%) indicates that intestinal biopsy may have prognostic value in the postsurgical evaluation and management of equine colic.  相似文献

Clinical pathology is a valuable adjunct to physical examination of cases of colic. The present review considers evaluation of cases of colic for three main purposes: (1) making a prognosis, (2) deciding whether to operate, and (3) making a diagnosis. Blood tests noted to be useful for prognostication were hematocrit, lactate and urea nitrogen concentrations, pH, anion gap, fibrin/fibrinogen degradation products, antithrombin III activity, prothrombin time, and thrombin time. Horses with a poor prognosis often have relative polycythemia, marked lactic acidosis, high anion gap, azotemia, and coagulation abnormalities evidenced by increased fibrin/fibrinogen degradation products, decreased antithrombin III activity, and prolonged prothrombin and thrombin times. The decision to operate is usually a clinical one, supported by relative polycythemia, hyperglycemia, and, possibly, abnormal peritoneal fluid analysis. Diagnosis of the primary problem (causing the colicky signs) is also often based largely on physical examination. However, peritoneal fluid analysis provides worthwhile data, especially in cases of peritonitis or intestinal ischemia and infarction.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To study the effects of morphine on haemodynamic variables, blood gas values and the requirement for additional anaesthetic drugs in horses undergoing surgery. STUDY DESIGN: Prospective randomized study. METHODS: Thirty-eight client-owned horses, ASA(American Society of Anesthesiologists) category I or II, undergoing elective surgical procedures, were studied. Horses were divided between two groups, and were paired according to operation, anaesthetist, body position during surgery, mass and breed. Group M+ received morphine by intravenous (IV) injection (0.15 mg kg(-1)) before induction of anaesthesia and then by infusion (0.1 mg kg(-1) hour(-1)) throughout anaesthesia. Group M- received the same anaesthetic technique (pre-anaesthetic medication with romifidine (100 microg kg(-1)) IV; induction with ketamine (2.2 mg kg(-1)) and diazepam (50 microg kg(-1)) IV; maintenance with halothane), except that morphine was excluded. Both groups received flunixin IV (1.1 mg kg(-1)) before surgery. Both groups also received 50% nitrous oxide for the first 10 minutes of anaesthesia. During anaesthesia, end-tidal halothane was maintained at 0.9% (+/-0.1%) in both groups. Heart rate (HR) and respiratory rate (fr), systolic, mean and diastolic arterial pressures were recorded every 5 minutes. Arterial blood samples were analysed every 20 minutes. Additional anaesthetics (ketamine and midazolam) were administered whenever the horse moved. Dobutamine was infused to maintain mean arterial pressure (MAP) > 58 mm Hg, but was discontinued when MAP reached 68 mm Hg. Mechanical ventilation was imposed when PaCO(2) exceeded 9.3 kPa (70 mm Hg). RESULTS: Haemodynamic data (HR and MAP) and blood gas measurements were analysed using repeated measure analysis using a mixed covariance pattern model (SAS version 8.2). A Student's t-test was used to investigate differences between groups in the doses of additional anaesthetics required. There were no significant differences between M+ or M- groups in MAP (p = 0.65), HR (p = 0.74), PaO2 (p = 0.40) or PaCO2 (p = 0.20). Fewer horses in the M+ group received additional anaesthetics (15.8% compared to 21.1% in M- group), and the mean dose of ketamine required was higher in the M- group (mean +/- SD: M-, 0.93 +/- 0.70; M+, 0.45 +/- 0.17). These differences were not statistically significant (p = 0.28). CONCLUSIONS: Pre-anaesthetic and peri-operative morphine administration is not associated with significant haemodynamic or ventilatory changes. Horses receiving morphine tended to receive fewer and lower doses of additional anaesthetic drugs, although this was not statistically significant.  相似文献

Clinical relevance of monocyte procoagulant activity in horses with colic   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Endotoxin-activated monocytes express a thromboplastin-like procoagulant activity on the cell surface that may serve as a focal point for formation of microvascular thrombi. Because coagulopathy is a common sequela to endotoxemia in the equine species, we investigated the ability of monocytes, isolated from horses with colic, to express procoagulant activity. On the day of admission, and on the third and fifth day of hospitalization, monocytes were isolated from 30 adult horses with colic. A coagulation profile, including prothrombin time, activated partial thromboplastin time, thrombin time, and plasma fibrinogen and serum fibrin degradation products concentrations, was determined at each sample collection. The concentration of endotoxin in the plasma was quantitated at the time of admission. Ten clinically normal adult horses served as controls. The procoagulant activity of monocytes isolated from horses with colic was significantly (P less than 0.05) greater than that of the monocytes isolated from clinically normal horses. On the first and third day of hospitalization, the mean prothrombin time was significantly (P less than 0.05) longer in horses with colic, compared with clinically normal horses, and was the most common abnormality in the coagulation profile on the day of admission (25/30; 83%). Mean fibrin degradation products concentration was significantly (P less than 0.05) greater in horses with colic on the day of admission and was the second most common abnormality in the coagulation profile on day 1 (23/30; 77%). In horses with colic, the mean prothrombin and activated partial thromboplastin times were significantly (P less than 0.05) longer in horses that did not survive, compared with horses that survived.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献

This paper reports seven cases of penile paraphimosis which occurred in both entire and castrated horses in association with general debility. Two cases were discharged after treatment while still suffering from partial paralysis; one was discharged at the owner's request with complete paralysis; three were destroyed and one died during treatment. Identified causes of debility were malnutrition, severe parasitism, glucose malabsorption and salmonellosis.  相似文献
