AIMS: To use quantitative PCR assays to detect Theileria orientalis Ikeda type in cattle presumed infected with T. orientalis, to examine the relationship between theilerial piroplasm count and haematocrit (HCT), and the relationship with quantification cycle threshold (Cq) values.

METHODS: Blood samples in EDTA (n=1,024), derived from herds affected by anaemia associated with T. orientalis infection (TABA) between April and October 2013, were submitted for testing using quantitative PCR (qPCR) assays for T. orientalis and Ikeda type. Nucleotide sequencing of the major piroplasm surface protein (MPSP) gene was performed on 16 samples to identify T. orientalis types. Blood smear and/or HCT results were supplied with most samples. For data analysis, the number of theilerial piroplasm per 1,000 erythrocytes counted was categorised as negative (0), low (1–9), moderate (10–100) or high (>100). HCT was categorised as severely anaemic (<0.15 L/L), mildly anaemic (0.15–0.24 L/L) or not anaemic (>0.24 L/L). Differences between categories in proportion of samples positive for Ikeda type or mean Cq value were examined using χ2 tests or analysis of variance, respectively.

RESULTS: Of 1,022 samples containing amplifiable DNA, 916 (90%) were positive for T. orientalis and 789 (77%) were positive for Ikeda type. Nucleotide sequencing of MPSP amplicons also identified the presence of Chitose and Buffeli types in 11 samples without Ikeda. Ikeda was detected in a greater proportion of severely anaemic (288/302; 95%) than mildly anaemic (227/252; 90%) cattle (p=0.02). In non-anaemic cattle, 344/406 (85%) were positive for T. orientalis and 247/406 (60%) were positive for Ikeda type. In samples from cattle that were piroplasm-positive, a greater proportion of anaemic (483/505, 96%) than non-anaemic (211/307; 69%) cattle were positive for Ikeda type (p<0.001). In piroplasm-negative cattle, 20/37 (54%) anaemic and 25/78 (32%) non-anaemic cattle were Ikeda-positive (p<0.05). The distributions of Cq values differed between piroplasm count and HCT categories (p<0.001). Mean Cq differed between high and negative, and low piroplasm categories (p<0.001), but not between high and moderate categories (p=0.81), and differed between severely anaemic and mildly anaemic (p<0.001), and non-anaemic categories (p<0.001).

CONCLUSIONS: The Ikeda type was found in a high proportion of cattle during outbreaks of TABA in New Zealand. Analysis of Cq values suggested a relationship of Ikeda parasitaemia with severity of anaemia, but further investigation is required to better understand the role of parasitaemia in the pathogenesis of TABA.  相似文献

AIMS: The principle aim of this study was to examine the association between infection with Theileria orientalis Ikeda type and growth rates of suckled beef calves on four beef farms. In addition, associations between calf sex, sampling time, and individual farm and T. orientalis Ikeda type infection intensity and haematocrit (HCT) were investigated.

METHODS: The study was a prospective longitudinal study in which 240 calves from four purposively selected beef farms in the North Island of New Zealand were blood sampled and weighed in late spring, mid-summer and early autumn. Two farms were from high-risk (A and B) and two from low-risk (C and D) tick areas. Blood samples were analysed to determine HCT, and the number of T. orientalis Ikeda type organisms/µL of blood (infection intensity) using a quantitative PCR assay. A calf was defined as infected if >415 organisms/µL were detected in a blood sample. Linear mixed models were used to examine associations between infection intensity, mean daily liveweight gain (MDG), HCT, calf sex and time of sampling on the four farms.

RESULTS: On Farms A and B nearly all calves were infected at each sampling time, on Farm C <30% were infected at any sampling and on Farm D infection prevalence increased from 32 to 79% between late spring and early autumn. On Farms C and D, from mid-summer to early autumn, mean MDG was 0.127 (95% CI=0.072–0.183) kg/day less for infected than uninfected calves (p<0.001). On all farms MDG was negatively associated with infection intensity for mid-summer and early autumn sampling times (p=0.037). The relationship between time of sampling and infection intensity varied between farms (p<0.001), and between male and female calves (p=0.018). Females had a higher infection intensity than males at the mid-summer and early autumn samplings. The association between HCT and infection intensity varied with sampling time and farm (p=0.018). There was a strong negative association between infection intensity and HCT at the late spring sampling, but in mid-summer there was no association, and in early autumn only a weak association.

CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE: This study has shown that beef farmers in the North Island of New Zealand should be concerned about the welfare effects and economic impacts of T. orientalis Ikeda type infection in suckled beef calves.  相似文献

CASE HISTORY AND CLINICAL FINDINGS: A dairy cow, from a herd in the Waikato region of New Zealand, was reported with regenerative anaemia on 12 September 2014. Testing of blood from the animal using PCR assays for Theileria orientalis produced a negative result for both Chitose and Ikeda types.

LABORATORY FINDINGS: Using PCR and DNA sequencing, blood from the cow was positive for Candidatus Mycoplasma haemobos. Further testing of another 12 animals from the case herd, 27 days after the affected cow was first reported, showed 11 animals were positive for Candidatus M. haemobos or Mycoplasma wenyonii in the PCR. None of these cattle were clinically anaemic or positive for T. orientalis Ikeda type using PCR.

A convenience sample of 47 blood samples from cattle throughout New Zealand, submitted to the Investigation and Diagnostic Centre (Ministry for Primary Industries) for surveillance testing for T. orientalis Ikeda, was selected for further testing for bovine haemoplasmas. Of these samples, 6/47 (13%) and 13/47(28%) were positive for M. wenyonii and Candidatus M. haemobos, respectively. There was no difference in the proportion of samples positive for the bovine haemaplasmas between cattle with anaemia that were negative for T. orientalis (6/20, 33%), or without anaemia or T. orientalis (10/18, 56%), or from cattle herds experiencing anaemia and infection with T. orientalis Ikeda type (3/9, 33%).

DIAGNOSIS: Bovine haemoplasmosis.

CLINICAL RELEVANCE: The presence of bovine haemoplasmas in blood does not establish causality for anaemia in cattle. Diagnosis of anaemia associated with haemoplasmosis would require exclusion of other causes of regenerative anaemia and an association of the agent with anaemia in affected cattle herds. The data collected in this study did not provide evidence that bovine haemoplasmas were associated with a large number of outbreaks of anaemia in cattle in New Zealand.  相似文献

AIM: To describe the prevalence and spatial distribution of cattle herds infected with Ikeda and non-Ikeda types of Theileria orientalis in New Zealand between November 2012 and June 2013.

METHODS: Pooled serum samples collected historically between November 2012 and June 2013 were obtained from cattle herds throughout New Zealand. Each pooled sample consisted of approximately 20 individual cattle samples from that herd, and was provided with details of the spatial location of the herd (n=722). DNA from all samples was tested using two quantitative PCR assays for the detection of T. orientalis (all types) and the Ikeda type. The proportion of herds that were positive for T. orientalis and Ikeda type, or that were positive for T. orientalis but negative for Ikeda type (non-Ikeda positive) was determined for different regions of New Zealand.

RESULTS: The highest prevalence of herds infected with Ikeda type was detected in the Northland (33/35; 94%) and Auckland and the Waikato (63/191; 33%) regions. Only 2/204 (1%) herds were positive for the Ikeda type in the South Island. A high percentage of herds that were positive for non-Ikeda types was detected in the Gisborne and Hawkes Bay (23 (95%CI=13–37)%), Auckland and Waikato (22 (95%CI=16–29)%) and Bay of Plenty (24 (95%CI=10–44)%) regions.

CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE: The high prevalence of Ikeda type detected in cattle herds in the Northland, Auckland and Waikato regions represents a risk to naive cattle being introduced into these regions. There is also the potential for resident cattle herds in the Gisborne and Hawkes Bay, Auckland, Waikato and Bay of Plenty regions to experience increased infection with the Ikeda type.

The overall impact experienced by regions will depend on other factors such as the number of herds present and the predominant type of farming, as well as the interplay between tick ecology, cattle immunity and movement patterns of cattle.  相似文献

AIM: To determine inter-observer agreement for a clinical scoring system for the detection of bovine respiratory disease complex in calves, and the impact of classification of calves as sick or healthy based on different cut-off values.

METHODS: Two third-year veterinary students (Observer 1 and 2) and one post-graduate student (Observer 3) received 4 hours of training on scoring dairy calves for signs of respiratory disease, including rectal temperature, cough, eye and nasal discharge, and ear position. Observers 1 and 2 scored 40 pre-weaning dairy calves 24 hours apart (80 observations) over three visits to a calf-rearing facility, and Observers 1, 2 and 3 scored 20 calves on one visit. Inter-observer agreement was assessed using percentage of agreement (PA) and Kappa statistics for individual clinical signs, comparing Observers 1 and 2. Agreement between the three observers for total clinical score was assessed using cut-off values of ≥4, ≥5 and ≥6 to indicate unhealthy calves.

RESULTS: Inter-observer PA for rectal temperature was 0.68, for cough 0.78, for nasal discharge 0.62, for eye discharge 0.63, and for ear position 0.85. Kappa values for all clinical signs indicated slight to fair agreement (<0.4), except temperature that had moderate agreement (0.6). The Fleiss’ Kappa for total score, using cut-offs of ≥4, ≥5 and ≥6 to indicate unhealthy calves, was 0.35, 0.06 and 0.13, respectively, indicating slight to fair agreement.

CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE: There was important inter-observer discrepancies in scoring clinical signs of respiratory disease, using relatively inexperienced observers. These disagreements may ultimately mean increased false negative or false positive diagnoses and incorrect treatment of cases. Visual assessment of clinical signs associated with bovine respiratory disease needs to be thoroughly validated when disease monitoring is based on the use of a clinical scoring system.  相似文献

Haemaphysalis longicornis is the only tick in New Zealand that infests livestock. Throughout its range H. longicornis is exposed to and exhibits tolerance to a wide range of environmental conditions, although it flourishes more in moist, warm-temperate environments. This review examines aspects of the biology, physiology and ecology of H. longicornis that determine its distribution and seasonal activity in New Zealand, based on laboratory and field studies. Examples are also drawn from studies outside New Zealand for comparative purposes, especially in the context of seasonal activity as seen in less temperate latitudes. The tick is able to withstand a wide range of temperature, from its developmental threshold of ~12°C to nearly 40°C at its lethal limit, but its tolerance of dehydration is less wide, especially in the larva and adult, the former especially being the stage that largely determines suitable biotopes for the tick and its present distributional limits.

The importance of H. longicornis to the New Zealand livestock industry has recently increased through the establishment and spread of Theileria orientalis Ikeda among dairy and beef cattle, although the tick has always posed production-limiting problems for cattle, deer and to a lesser extent, sheep. The tick's role as a vector of theileriosis and how aspects of the tick's biology affect the spread and maintenance of this disease are discussed. It is proposed that, of available wildlife hosts, the brown hare with its wide-ranging habits, is an important disseminator of ticks.

Currently control of ticks is difficult partly because of their wide host range, overlapping activity periods of stadia, and also because the greater part of their annual cycle is spent on pasture. This means that acaricides alone do not satisfactorily reduce tick populations or provide comprehensive protection to stock, so integrated management combining pasture management with good husbandry and chemical prophylaxis is advocated.  相似文献

AIM: To estimate incidence risk, cumulative mortality and case fatality rate within herds affected by bovine anaemia associated with Theileria orientalis infection (TABA), in New Zealand during the early phase of the epidemic (August 2012–September 2013).

METHODS: A mixed methods approach was utilised to integrate data from various sources, including a detailed questionnaire carried out on 18 dairy farms which had experienced cases of TABA; a brief telephone survey of an additional 139 case farms; and data extracted from a Ministry for Primary Industries database for a further 42 case farms. The subsequent analysis determined incidence risk, cumulative mortality and case fatality rates for beef and dairy herds.

RESULTS: Data were analysed from 196/263 (74%) known case farms at the date of closing the questionnaires. These farms contained 99,505 cattle; 2,847 animals were reported with clinical disease, and a further 590 animals were recorded as having died from TABA. The within-herd incidence risk, cumulative mortality and case fatality rate were consistent between the three data sources, did not differ between beef and dairy herds, and were estimated to be 0.97 (inter-quartile range (IQR) 0.36–2.07)%, 0.23 (IQR 0.00–0.66)% and 16.67 (IQR 0.00–33.33)%, respectively. There was substantial variability in the level of impact, with 22 farms severely affected (incidence risk >5% and cumulative mortality >5%).

CONCLUSIONS: The mixed methods approach was effective in dealing with the disparate data sources. The inclusion of the majority of farms known to be affected at the time the questionnaires were performed implies that the information is likely to be representative. The collective outputs of the analyses represent the best estimate available of within-herd measures of disease frequency in the early phase of the epidemic in New Zealand. The limitations of the data imply that their primary application may be to inform the design of subsequent structured observational field studies.

CLINICAL RELEVANCE: The results of this study provide information on the impact of TABA on cattle farms during the emergence and early spread of the disease, as well as for generating hypotheses on causal mechanisms and risk factors that may influence the course of disease.  相似文献

1. Genetically fat and lean adult broiler breeder females were fed ad libitum or restricted throughout life. At one year of age, comparisons of blood viscosity and haematology and changes in blood chemistry after exposure to thermal stress were conducted.

2. Whole blood viscosity was more than twice as high, and plasma triglyc‐eride and haemoglobin concentrations were over 30% higher in fat line than in lean line females fed ad libitum or in restricted birds of both genotypes.

3. Mean cell haemoglobin concentration was higher and mean cell volume lower in fat compared with lean line females.

4. Food restriction was associated with lower plasma triglyceride concentrations, lower numbers of heterophils and monocytes and a lower heterophil‐lymphocyte ratio.

5. Fat line birds had a higher blood pCO2 and lower pH than lean line birds.

6. Thermal stress was associated in ad libitum‐fed birds with a rise in blood pH and a decrease in pCO2, and in restricted birds with a decline in blood pH and an increase in pCO2.

7. Blood creatine kinase activity increased in all groups under thermal stress.  相似文献

CASE HISTORY: Between September and October 2013, 40 of 150 crossbred Friesian dairy calves on a farm in the Manawatu region of New Zealand developed neurological signs when between 1 and 3 months of age. Calves were grazed in multiple mobs and calves from each mob were affected. A variable response was observed to initial treatment with thiamine, fluoroquinolone antibiotics and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs.

CLINICAL AND PATHOLOGICAL FINDINGS: Affected calves exhibited a range of neurological signs that included generalised depression, hind limb ataxia with a stiff gait, and knuckling of the fetlocks. In advanced cases, calves became recumbent with opisthotonous. Over a 4-week period, 13 calves died or were subject to euthanasia and a thorough necropsy was performed on three of these calves. Necropsy findings included fibrinous peritonitis, pleuritis and pericarditis, with no gross abnormalities visible in the brain or joints. Histology of the brain was possible in seven of the affected calves, with lesions ranging from lymphocytic and histiocytic vasculitis and meningoencephalitis, to extensive thrombosis and neutrophilic inflammation. Immunohistochemistry using an anti-chlamydial lipopolysaccharide antibody revealed positive immuno-staining in all seven cases, with no brain samples exhibiting immunostaining for Histophilus somni. DNA was extracted from a sample of fresh brain from one case and chlamydial DNA sequences were amplified by PCR and found to be identical to Chlamydia pecorum. PCR was also performed on formalin-fixed brain tissue from three of the other cases, but no chlamydial DNA was amplified.

DIAGNOSIS: Chlamydia pecorum meningoencephalomyelitis (sporadic bovine encephalomyelitis).

CLINICAL RELEVANCE: This is the first time that C. pecorum has been confirmed as a cause of clinical disease in New Zealand. Practitioners should be aware of this disease as a differential in calves with neurological signs, and submit samples of formalin-fixed brain as well as fresh brain to enable confirmation of suspected cases using PCR analysis. Furthermore, these cases illustrate that the histological lesions in the brains of calves with C. pecorum are more variable than previously reported, and pathologists should be aware that histological features may overlap with those traditionally ascribed to other organisms, such as H. somni.  相似文献

1. A significant proportion of wheat cultivars grown in New South Wales had low apparent metabolisable energy (AME) values (< 13.0 MJ/kg dry matter) for growing broilers when determined by the conventional total collection technique.

2. The low AME was due to a reduced starch digestibility and was not improved by grinding the wheat finely or by steam pelleting the diet.

3. Higher AME values were obtained when determinations were made with adult cockerels than with growing broilers when the conventional technique was used.

4. AME values determined using a rapid bioassay technique (Farrell, 1978) with growing broilers or adult cockerels were considerably higher than values determined using the conventional procedure with growing broilers.

5. Inter‐laboratory studies showed that the true metabolisable energy (TME) assay gave reproducible values for individual and blended wheat samples, but that these values were higher than AME values determined by the conventional procedure. Similar TME values were found with growing broilers and adult cockerels.  相似文献

1. It has been shown that both the variety of wheat and the environment under which growth took place influenced the quantities of starch and cell wall carbohydrate contents of wheat.

2. The different varieties of wheat investigated contained different proportions of water‐soluble to water‐insoluble hemicelluloses.

3. By comparison of the arabinose to xylose ratios it was concluded that water‐soluble and insoluble arabinoxylans of wheat were branched to the same degree.

4. Starch from six wheat varieties grown in the U.K. was very well digested by adult cockerels and true metabolisable energy values of the wheats were high.

5. Small amounts of cell wall carbohydrates were digested by adult cockerels.  相似文献

CASE HISTORY: A retrospective study was conducted to investigate 11 outbreaks of presumptive fatal adenovirus infection diagnosed through two New Zealand diagnostic laboratories during 2014 and 2015. Outbreaks occurred in 6–12-month-old Friesian or Friesian cross cattle during autumn, winter and spring. Individual outbreaks were short in duration, with mortality rates ranging from 3/250 to 20/600 (1.2 to 3.3%).

CLINICAL AND PATHOLOGICAL FINDINGS: Clinical signs included severe diarrhoea, depression, recumbency, and death. Post-mortem examination revealed congestion and oedema of the alimentary tract and fluid to haemorrhagic intestinal contents. Histopathological lesions were characterised by congestion and haemorrhage of the alimentary tract mucosa, oedema of the submucosa, and mild interstitial inflammation in the kidneys. Large basophilic intranuclear inclusion bodies were identified in vascular endothelial cells of the alimentary tract in 11/11 cases and of the kidney in 8/9 cases.

MOLECULAR TESTING: A real-time quantitative PCR (qPCR) assay was designed to detect bovine adenovirus type 10 (BAdV-10) using hexon gene sequences available in GenBank. DNA extracted from a field case and confirmed by sequencing was used as a positive control. The qPCR had a reaction efficiency of 101% (R2=0.99) and the limit of detection was <10 DNA copies/reaction. The qPCR detected BAdV-10 in formalin-fixed paraffin-embedded (FFPE) tissue from 10/11 cases. DNA sequencing of PCR products from nine of these cases showed them to be identical to BAdV-10 sequences in GenBank. For the PCR-negative case, the PCR product had a hexon sequence 99% similar to bovine adenovirus Wic isolate Ma20-1, a close relative of BadV-10.

DIAGNOSIS: Bovine adenovirus type 10 was identified in FFPE tissues from cattle with histopathological evidence of adenovirus infection.

CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Bovine adenoviruses, and especially BAdV-10, should be considered in the differential diagnosis for acute enteric disease and death in young cattle. The qPCR detected BAdV-10 from FFPE tissue of cattle with suspected adenoviral infection diagnosed by histopathology. However results should be interpreted in light of clinical and pathological findings due to the possibility of adenovirus shedding by healthy cattle and the presence of pathogenic adenoviruses other than BAdV-10.  相似文献

1. The classical ME value of triticale varied from 12.305 to 13.778 kJ/g or 11.819 to 13.016 kJ/g corrected for N‐retention depending upon method of calculation.

2. Substituting triticale for maize, weight for weight, but not on a iso‐nitrogenous basis, in a groundnut oil cake (GNC) starter diet improved weight gain (P < 0.05) when the substitution exceeded 75% without affecting the protein efficiency ratio (PER).

3. A similar substitution in a soybean oil meal diet, improved weight gain (P < 0.05) at 50% or more but PER declined (P < 0.05).

4. The net protein utilisation and protein retention efficiency values of the diets in which maize protein was replaced by triticale protein were significantly reduced.

5. The maize‐GNC diet was equally limiting in methionine and lysine while the triticale‐GNC diet was not.

6. The growth and food efficiency obtained with a triticale‐GNC diet was higher (P < 0.01) than with the maize‐GNC diet but not with a maize‐GNC supplemented with fish meal and methionine.

7. It is concluded that triticale could quantitatively substitute maize in the starter diets.  相似文献

Background: Parapoxviruses are zoonotic viruses that infect cattle, goats and sheep; there have also been reports of infections in camels, domestic cats and seals.

Objective: The objective of this report was to describe a case of vesicular disease caused by pseudocowpox virus (PCPV) in water buffalo (Bubalus bubalis) in Brazil.

Animals: Sixty buffalo less than 6 months old exhibited ulcers and widespread peeling of the tongue epithelium. There were no cases of vesicular disease in pigs or horses on the same property.

Methods: Samples were analysed by PCR and sequencing. Phylogenetic analysis in MEGA 7.01 was reconstructed using major envelope protein (B2L) by the Tamura three-parameter nucleotide substitution model and the maximum likelihood and neighbor joining models, both with 1000 bootstrap replicates. The genetic distance between the groups was analysed in MEGA using the maximum composite likelihood model. The rate variation among sites was modeled using gamma distribution.

Results: The presence of PCPV in the buffalo herd could be demonstrated in epithelium and serum. The minimum genetic distance between the isolated PCPV strain (262-2016) and orf virus and bovine papular stomatitis virus was 6.7% and 18.4%, respectively. The maximum genetic distance calculated was 4.6% when compared with a PCPV detected in a camel.

Conclusions/Clinical Importance: The peculiar position of the isolated strain in the phylogenetic trees does not necessarily indicate a different kind of PCPV that infects buffalo. More samples from cattle and buffalo in Brazil must be sequenced and compared to verify if PCPV from buffalo are genetically different from samples derived from cattle.  相似文献

1. Calorimetric measurements were made on 5‐week‐old male chickens sampled from the third generation of three lines selected for either increased live‐weight gain (W), food consumption (F), or food conversion efficiency (E). A control line (C) was also measured.

2. Food intake and food conversion ratio were greater (P<0.05) in the F line than in the E and C lines.

3. Metabolisability of the diet was 0.8% higher in the E line than in the other lines.

4. Metabolisable energy (ME) intake and heat production were greater (P<0.05) in the F line than in the E and C lines, and energy balance was greater (P<0.05) in the F than in the W and E lines.

5. During starvation, excreta energy and heat production were greater (P < 0.05) in the F than the other lines.

6. Availability of ME (net energy) was the same (85%) for all lines but calculated daily maintenance energy requirements (kJ ME/kgW) were W, 860; F, 937; E, 796 and C, 810.

7. By 9 weeks the F line contained more fat and less water than lines E and C.  相似文献

1. The economic effects of increased vitamin E supplementation in 168 commercial broiler flocks incorporating over 3 million birds was assessed using a computerised data retrieval system.

2. Approximately half of the flocks were fed on either a high (163 mg/kg) vitamin E or on a normal (44 mg/kg) vitamin E‐containing diet throughout production.

3. Approximately half of the flocks were the progeny of breeder flocks which had been fed on a high vitamin E‐containing diet throughout production.

4. The improvement in target income in the vitamin E‐supplemented broiler flocks was 8–44% (P < 0.01).

5. The residual improvement in target income in these flocks, after the cost of the additional vitamin E was taken into account, was 2.74% and failed to reach statistical significance.

6. The increased net income was achieved by a significantly improved food conversion ratio and average weight per bird (P < 0.05).

7. There was no overall effect of vitamin E supplementation of broiler breeders on subsequent broiler performance.  相似文献

1. The effect of the ligation of the caeca on nitrogen utilisation and nitrogen excretion was examined in conventional chickens fed a diet containing 50 g protein/kg plus urea.

2. Ligation of the caeca significantly improved nitrogen balance and utilisation by up to more than 2 times as much as those of controls (P< 0.05).

3. The treatment significantly decreased uric acid excretion by 77 mg nitrogen/day (P< 0.01) and also total nitrogen excretion (P<0.05): the former decrease almost explained the latter.

4. No effect of the ligation of caeca on urea and ammonia excretion was observed.

5. It is concluded that nitrogen metabolism in chickens is affected by possible changes in caecal fermentation by preventing entry into the caeca of substances from urine and digesta.  相似文献

1. Single Comb White Leghorn adult cockerels were fed on 50 g/kg protein diet, 200 g/kg protein diet or 50 g/kg protein diet plus urea and in vitro ammoniagenesis from urea and uric acid in the caeca was determined.

2. Four‐fold protein intake caused about 4.6‐fold increase in caecal ammonia production from urea (P < 0.05), and tended to increase it from uric acid as compared with 50 g/kg protein‐fed birds.

3. Dietary urea significantly increased caecal ammonia production from urea and uric acid by about 2 and 3 times as much as those of control birds, respectively (P < 0.05).

4. It is concluded that increased protein intake and the feeding of urea are able to induce ammoniagenesis from urea and uric acid in the caeca of fowls.  相似文献

1. A number of factors causing variability in the percentages of cracked, and dirty eggs and weekly standard margin (WSM) of returns from eggs over production costs were examined on an integrated commercial poultry plant in Scotland.

2. As the bird aged, the percentage of cracked eggs increased (P <0.01) and the percentage of grade A eggs and WSM decreased (P <0.01). Cracks in dirty eggs (10.1%) were more than double those in all eggs laid (4.9%).

3. Seasonal effects on percentage cracked eggs and percentage grade A eggs were one‐third the magnitude of those due to age but were significant (P <0.05).

4. Variability in percentage cracked eggs, dirty eggs and WSM accounted for by the factors measured, were 72, 64 and 92% respectively.

5. The variability in WSM was significantly affected by percentage lay, food consumption and age but not by percentage cracked eggs, originally dirty and grade A eggs.

6. Flock management and climate inside the laying house each increased the amount of variability accounted for in the percentage cracked eggs and dirty eggs by at least 10%.  相似文献

1. The effects of age and sex on body weight, carcass traits, physical and chemical properties of breast muscle from chickens and helmeted guinea fowls managed under village free-range conditions were assessed in random samples of 48 guinea fowls and 48 chickens obtained from local markets.

2. Guinea fowls had higher body weight, hot carcass weight, cold dressed weight and breast weight than chickens.

3. Guinea fowls had more dry matter, protein and less fat than chickens. Ash content did not differ between guinea fowls and chickens. Protein and fat increased, whereas dry matter and ash decreased with age (P < 0.05)

4. Chicken meat was lighter, less red and more yellow than guinea fowl meat. Cooking loss was higher in guinea fowls, male and grower birds than chickens, females and adult birds, respectively. Shear force was affected by age, as mature birds had a higher value than growers.

5. Guinea fowl carcasses contained more meat that was leaner, higher in protein and redder compared with chicken meat. As age increased the meat increased in protein and fat content and shear force, whereas colour became darker, redder and yellower.  相似文献
